This paper complicates the classic security dilemma by considering the notions of ontological security and relational deterrence. It studies how the ontological security dilemma has emerged between the US, China, and Taiwan from the relational perspective and how these spiral chains will further develop in the future. The paper incurs the literature on relational analysis to expound on how different ontological security concerns allude to relational deterrence between the three actors. Taiwan's separatism is more of a threat to China's relational self than to physical security because the separatist does not belong to any already agreed relationship. A geometric model and a few simulations yield three unconventional findings. 1) The less advantaged the US military is over China, the less likely armed unification will occur. 2) The US anti-Chinese tendency is irrelevant in determining the probability of armed unification. 3) What may escalate the spiral are China's anti-Taiwan independence and Taiwan's anti-unification. Over the past two decades, the Taiwan government promulgated some regulatory measures and promotional actions on energy efficiency promotion and renewable energy development. In March 2022, the "Taiwan's Pathway to Net-Zero Emissions in 2050" was announced to respond to the Paris Agreement. In order to achieve the goal, the Climate Change Response Act (CCRA) was passed on February 15, 2023, requiring the de-carbonization measures and adaptation strategies. The main aim of this paper was to analyze the changes in GHG emissions and renewable energy supply by using the updated data from the official statistics in connection with the trends of environmental and energy sustainability since 2000. The findings showed that total installed capacity of renewable power (especially in solar power and wind power) showed an amazing increase over the past decade, leading to the inclined GHG emissions and thus supporting the environmental and energy sustainability toward a low-carbon society. Furthermore, this paper summarized the development history and main differences concerning the carbon neutrality policy and legislation in Japan and South Korea. For achieving the staged targets of GHG emissions by 2030 and 2050, this paper finally addressed the technological approaches for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 in Taiwan, focusing on the transformation of energy and industry, and the policy implications by all levels of government. The ship tracking and mapping capabilities that geospatial technology provides create an opportunity to observe fishing vessels as they move through established maritime boundaries. This paper connects data availability to ground-truthing research and explores the limits of vessel movement mapping in representing worker abuse at sea through three related themes. First, a conceptual background links the advancements in maritime remote sensing to critical GIS scholarship and provides a background on worker abuse aboard Taiwanese fishing vessels. Second, the paper examines the potential of machine learning algorithms to represent worker abuse at sea, arguing that more extensive ground-truthing research with workers could help address variations in the data and limited data sets. Third, I use remote sensing data to identify and unpack Taiwanese fishing across the three EEZs with the most concentrated Taiwanese fishing activity: starting with Taiwan, followed by the Falkland Islands, and Seychelles. I argue that fishing activity and the digital representation of vessel movements are governed by terrestrial geopolitics and subject to manipulation by ship captains. Finally, the conclusion offers recommendations for how future research can capitalize on the capabilities of AIS, particularly with respect to addressing problems of working conditions and abuse at sea. Artificial intelligence is the unification of philosophy, cognitive science, mathematics, neurophysiology, psychology, computer science, information theory, cybernetics, and uncertainty theory. Therefore, it is feasible and necessary to utilize STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Liberal Arts, and Mathematics) education to learn artificial intelligence courses. Computational thinking skills are of vital importance to high school students. This paper integrates artificial intelligence education with STEAM model with the aim of enhancing students' computational thinking skills. First, we investigate the feasibility of this model and set teaching objectives about artificial intelligence curricula. Second, artificial intelligence curricula with STEAM model is proposed to carry out interdisciplinary artificial intelligence knowledge acquisition. Finally, the effects of this model on students' computational thinking skills, learning motivation, and self-efficacy are evaluated. One hundred thirty-six participants are recruited from a high school in Beijing. The results reveal that the integration of artificial intelligence education with STEAM is able to promote computational thinking skills, learning motivation, and self-efficacy of the students in the experimental group. The main implication of this study is that artificial intelligence education in light of STEAM model can be used as a teaching guide for the combination of artificial intelligence curricula with multi-disciplinary knowledge at the primary and secondary levels. Bankruptcy prediction is considered one of the most important research topics in the field of finance and accounting. The rapid increase of data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning has led researchers to build an accurate bankruptcy prediction model. Recent studies show that ensemble methods perform better than traditional machine learning models for predicting corporate failure, especially with highly imbalanced datasets. However, the black box property of these techniques remains challenging to interpret the result and generate corporate classes without any explanation. To this end, we propose to build an accurate and interpretable classification model that generates a set of prediction rules for output. Tri-eXtreme Gradient Boosting (Tri-XGBoost), a semi-supervised technique, is recommended in this paper. The proposed method combines Borderline-Smote (BLSmote) based on Edited Nearest Neighbor (ENN) sampling techniques with three different XGBoost methods as weak classifiers (gbtree, gblinear, and dart). First, the resampling techniques are used to produce more representative synthetic data and balance the distribution of the datasets. To this end, BLSmote is applied to increase the proportion of instances in the minority class (bankrupt data). Then, ENN is used to eliminate the noisy samples from both classes. In addition, the most crucial features that increase predictive accuracy are chosen using XGBoost. Finally, in order to make the model more understandable for both applicants and experts, our result is presented as "IF–THEN" rules. Our proposed model is validated using the imbalanced Polish and Taiwan bankruptcy datasets. Our obtained results demonstrate that our suggested model performs better than the existing models based on the area under the ROC curve (AUC), F1-score, and G-mean performance measures. Our proposed model significantly improves classification accuracy, which is greater than 95% for Polish datasets and more than 93% for Taiwanese dataset in terms of AUC, G-mean and F1-score. This paper investigates medical providers' supply curve under universal healthcare system with global budgeting, which theory predicts to be either positive or negative sloping. Using the population data of medical providers' services and exogenous shifted budgets in Taiwan, empirical evidence shows that the dentists and Chinese herb practitioners maintained positive sloping supply curves. Hospitals and clinics that practice Western medicine were found to have negative sloping supply curves. The latter results indicate medical providers have incentives to provide excessive services under global budgeting, even when this drives down the price of their services provided. This paper revisits the weather effects with a comprehensive examination that includes all eight weather elements after controlling for the effect of seasonal affect disorder using the data from Taiwan between January 1, 1995, and October 31, 2021. We further employ principal component analysis to provide us with components that fittingly represent various multi-facet weather conditions and intuitively depict the relationship between the weather as we know it and investor behavior manifested in the overall market in returns, volatility, turnover, and liquidity. The results from a vector autoregression model based on both the individual weather elements and weather components show that the weather effects exist. We also find that warnings about extreme weather condition of a typhoon have a direct effect and heavy rain an indirect effect on market liquidity. In addition, institutional investors' buying and selling activity is linked to weather conditions. The robustness of the weather effects is further demonstrated by the results of the intraday return analysis and from considering different numbers of weather elements and conditions in the model. While urban nature has been reported as positively associated with health and well-being, only a few research focused on the health-beneficial effects of the ecological quality of natural environments. When designing urban green spaces, there is a growing need for establishing rich biodiversity and creating spaces where residents can recover from daily demands and stress. This study aims to understand if human aesthetic perceptions align with ecological quality by exploring the correlation between environmental naturalness, measured by avian diversity, and the restorativeness people experience from the natural landscapes. Additionally, we examine the relationship between the naturalness measured objectively and the naturalness people perceive. We conducted surveys to collect perceptions about natural landscapes in Taipei Metropolitan, Taiwan. We retrieved bird survey data from BBS Taiwan to estimate the naturalness levels of the sites and took photographs on-site to generate the interventions. Participants viewed images and evaluated their restoring and natural perceptions of landscapes. There were 128 participants who answered the survey. Our findings reported landscapes with greater objective naturalness, higher avian species richness and the Shannon diversity index scores, were assessed as more natural and were positively associated with perceived restorativeness. Although bird abundance, another objective naturalness measure did not show significant associations between perceived naturalness and restorativeness. People perceive urban nature supporting diverse bird species as more restorative, having a higher potential to provide restoring effects. Dengue is one of the world's most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral diseases. As it is found mostly in urban and semi-urban areas, urbanization and associated human activities that affect the environment and larval habitats could become risk factors (e.g., lane width, conditions of street ditches) for the spread of dengue. However, there are currently no systematic studies of micro-scale urbanization-based risk factors for the spread of dengue epidemics. We describe the study area, two micro-scale environmental risk factors associated with urbanization, and meteorological data. Since the observations involve spatial and temporal correlations, we also use some statistical methods for the analysis of spatial and spatial-temporal data for the relationship between urbanization and dengue. In this study, we analyzed data from Kaohsiung, a densely populated city in southern Taiwan, and found a positive correlation between environmental risk factors associated with urbanization (ditches positive for mosquito larvae and closely packed streets termed "dengue lanes") and clustering effects in dengue cases. The statistical analysis also revealed that the occurrence of positive ditches was significantly associated with that of dengue lanes in the study area. The relationship between climate variables and positive ditches was also analyzed in this paper, indicating a relationship between dengue and both rainfall and temperature, with temperature having a greater effect. Overall, this work is immediately relevant and applicable for policymakers in government, who will need to reduce these favorable habitats for vector-born disease spreaders and implement regulations for new urban constructions to thus reduce dengue spread in future outbreaks. Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is increasingly adopted globally, including in Taiwan's educational initiatives, yet challenges remain in implementing effective CLIL practices, such as pedagogy and curriculum design. This study investigated the effectiveness of multimodal task designs, combining hands-on learning with poster presentations, in enhancing oral communicative competence within CLIL contexts. Employing a mixed-methods, quasi-experimental design with a comparative case study framework, the study assessed English oral communicative competence in four intact fourth-grade Taiwanese CLIL Social Studies classes. The hands-on learning group (EG, n = 40) engaged in activities like Chinese Dumpling Making, Bird's Nest Building, and Succulent Pot Designing, while the non-hands-on learning group (CG, n = 34) used traditional worksheets on the same topics. Both groups proceeded to poster presentations within their multimodal task design, where students' oral communicative competence was assessed using rubrics developed based on Coyle's 4Cs dimensions, focusing on Content, Communication, and Cognition. Additionally, students' cultural knowledge related to the hands-on topics was evaluated through written tests. To complement the quantitative data, qualitative data from self-reported reflections and video recordings documenting interventions were collected for the assessment of oral communicative competence within a CLIL framework. Results demonstrate that integrating hands-on activities significantly enhanced procedural content, communication (i.e., sentence complexity, pronunciation accuracy for target vocabulary, presentation fluency), and cognitive abilities, confirming the efficacy of multimodal learning approaches in fostering linguistic and cognitive engagement. Post-test comparisons show the EG's superiority in cultural knowledge acquisition across all three hands-on topics. Student reflections endorsed the enrichment of learning experiences through multimodal task design. Video analysis of both groups' interventions revealed that despite significant engagement and autonomy, EG students commonly utilized general English rather than target vocabulary, a pattern similar to that observed in the CG. These findings highlight the potential of diverse modalities in CLIL to enhance English content learning and oral skills, shaping future pedagogy and language strategies in Taiwan. The study also emphasizes the role of embodied learning, the interplay between physical actions and cognitive processes, to facilitate deeper understanding and engagement with subject matter within CLIL settings. Atmospheric transport and dispersion models (ATDMs) are widely used to study and forecast pollution events. In the frame of the "Effect of Megacities on the transport and transformation of pollutants on the regional to global scales" (EMeRGe) project, ATDM forecasts were carried out to identify potential airborne sampling areas of perfluorocarbons (PFCs) emanating from controlled PFC releases. The forecasts involved short-distance transport over small-scale topographic maxima (Manilla; Philippines), short-distance transport over large-scale topographic maxima (Taipei, Taiwan) and long-distance transport over mixed topography (Nanjing, China, sampled over Taiwan). In situ aircraft measurements of PFC mixing ratios down to a few parts per quadrillion (ppqv) provide us with a unique dataset to explore the added benefits of dynamical downscaling. Transport simulations were repeated using FLEXPART driven by ERA5 and IFS meteorological data and FLEXPART-WRF with dynamically downscaled IFS data down to 1.1 km and four PBL parametrisations. Of the three cases studied, dynamical downscaling led to significant differences for the Manilla and Taipei releases that can be interpreted through changes in the modelled orographic flow regimes. The choice of PBL scheme also significantly impacted accuracy, but there was no systematically better-performing option, highlighting the benefits of ensemble forecasting. Results show how convergence and divergence between ensemble members can be utilised to help decision-making during field campaigns. This study highlights the role that dynamical downscaling can play as an important component in campaign planning when dealing with observations over orographically complex areas. Internet-related issues have influenced how civic knowledge is educated and measured. The International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) is a well-known large-scale assessment concerning how civic knowledge is educated and measured globally. Regardless of the emerging roles of internet access and usage, the influences of internet access on civic knowledge have yet to be investigated in ICCS research. Hence, this study aims to study whether the multiple-choice items in the civic knowledge test of ICCS 2016 are affected by internet access, what causes the effect, and to what degree Internet access influences the measurement. Results indicated that the ICCS civic knowledge test included six differential item functioning (DIF) items on internet access, of which five favored families with internet access, and one favored families without internet access. In addition, the primary source of DIF items was highly related to socioeconomic status. Overall, the students in families where the internet was available possessed higher civic knowledge than the students who were not. In conclusion, this study provides evidence of item inequivalence and identifies suspicious sources. These results can be used as a basis to investigate related research on digital learning, online teaching, and social media engagement in civic literacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study develops a novel periodic regime-switching model (the PRS model) to improve the forecasting of stock market volatility by accounting for the information from non-trading and trading periods, including regular trading and after-hour trading. Empirical analysis of the Taiwan Futures Exchange (TAIFEX) demonstrates the significant improvements of the PRS model in both in-sample and out-of-sample periods. Our results also show that the introduction of after-hour trading sessions has provided valuable information for volatility forecasting in subsequent regular trading sessions, emphasizing the importance of considering diverse information flows across different trading and non-trading times. The PRS model effectively captures the dynamics of non-trading and trading sessions and the influence of unusual news arrivals and jumps on market volatility, contributing to investment and risk management strategies. Based on the theoretical frameworks of the theory of triadic influence (TTI) and the buffering hypothesis, this study was designed to examine whether the relationship between depression and Internet addiction (IA) was mediated by refusal self-efficacy of Internet use and whether real-life and online social support moderated the effect of depression on refusal self-efficacy of Internet use among adolescents. A sample of 1127 junior high school students from Taiwan completed a self-report battery that included measures of depression, online social support, real-life social support, refusal self-efficacy of Internet use, and IA. The prevalence of depression and IA are 44.6% and 23% respectively. Structural equation modeling and bootstrapping analysis results showed that IA was significantly and positively predicted by depression and mediated by refusal self-efficacy of Internet use. Moreover, the results of the moderated mediation analyses revealed that real-life and online social support played a moderating role in the indirect effects of depression on IA through refusal self-efficacy of Internet use, such that indirect effects were attenuated by an increase of online social support, and in contrast, those effects promoted the increase of real-life social support. The results supported the TTI framework and the buffering hypothesis. A hypothesis testing approach, based on the theorem of probability integral transformation and the Kolmogorov–Smirnov one-sample test, for performance evaluation of probabilistic seasonal rainfall forecasts is proposed in this study. By considering the probability distribution of monthly rainfalls, the approach transforms the tercile forecast probabilities into a forecast distribution and tests whether the observed data truly come from the forecast distribution. The proposed approach provides not only a quantitative measure for performance evaluation but also a cumulative probability plot for insightful interpretations of forecast characteristics such as overconfident, underconfident, mean-overestimated, and mean-underestimated. The approach has been applied for the performance evaluation of probabilistic season rainfall forecasts in northern Taiwan, and it was found that the forecast performance is seasonal dependent. Probabilistic seasonal rainfall forecasts of the Meiyu season are likely to be overconfident and mean-underestimated, while forecasts of the winter-to-spring season are overconfident. As programming emerges as a critical skill in the digital age and digital tools continue to evolve, understanding students' perspectives on the integration of such technologies into their education is crucial. This empirical study explores the perspectives of students in Sweden and Taiwan on the use of digital tools in their programming courses. The research employs both qualitative and quantitative methods, including correlation analysis and inductive content analysis, to understand students' perceptions of the usefulness and challenges involved in the application of different digital technologies. The study reveals the importance of immediate feedback, visualization of concepts, online discussion platforms, and programming tools' tutorials. However, concerns about potential bias in AI grading systems and the need for more time and guidance to become familiar with new technologies are also highlighted. In response to the growing demand for high-resolution rainfall data to support disaster prevention in Taiwan, this study presents an innovative approach for downscaling precipitation data. We employed a hierarchical architecture of Multi-Scale Residual Networks (MSRN) to downscale rainfall from a coarse 0.25-degree resolution to a fine 0.0125-degree resolution, representing a substantial challenge due to a resolution increase of over 20 times. Our results demonstrate that the hierarchical MSRN outperforms both the one-step MSRN and linear interpolation methods when reconstructing high-resolution daily rainfall. It surpasses the linear interpolation method by 15.1 and 9.1% in terms of mean absolute error and root mean square error, respectively. Furthermore, the hierarchical MSRN excels in accurately reproducing high-resolution rainfall for various rainfall thresholds, displaying minimal biases. The threat score (TS) highlights the hierarchical MSRN's capability to replicate extreme rainfall events, achieving TS scores exceeding 0.54 and 0.46 at rainfall thresholds of 350 and 500 mm per day, outperforming alternative methods. This method is also applied to an operational global model, the ECMWF's daily rainfall forecasts over Taiwan. The evaluation results indicate that our approach is effective at improving rainfall forecasts for thresholds greater than 100 mm per day, with more significant improvement for the 1- to 3-day lead forecast. This approach also offers a realistic visual representation of fine-grained rainfall distribution, showing promise for making significant contributions to disaster preparedness and weather forecasting in Taiwan. This study addressed a gap in existing research on Multiple-Choice (MC) cloze tests by focusing on the learners' perspective, specifically examining the difficulties faced by vocational high school students (VHSs). A nationwide sample of 293 VHSs participated, providing both quantitative and qualitative data through a self-developed questionnaire. The results revealed that vocabulary and grammar posed the greatest challenges in the MC cloze test, while sentence patterns were perceived as the least difficult by VHSs. Factors contributing to these difficulties included the need for increased focus on vocabulary and grammar learning. Some participants attributed challenges to personal perceptions of intellectual capability, while others highlighted the influential role of teachers' attitudes on their learning motivations and outcomes. The study suggested implications for test designs and teaching approaches. Despite these contributions, the study acknowledged limitations and offered suggestions for future research directions. A core issue in the interdisciplinary study of human morality is its ontogeny in diverse cultures, but systematic, naturalistic data in specific cultural contexts are rare to find. This study conducts a novel analysis of 213 children's socio-moral behavior in a historical, non-Western, rural setting, based on a unique dataset of naturalistic observations from the first field research on Han Chinese children. Using multilevel multinomial modeling, we examined a range of proactive behaviors in 0-to-12-year-old children's peer cooperation and conflict in an entire community in postwar Taiwan. We modeled the effects of age, sex, kinship, and behavioral roles, and revealed complex interactions between these four variables in shaping children's moral development. We discovered linkages between coercive and non-coercive behaviors as children strategically negotiated leadership dynamics. We identified connections between prosocial and aggressive behaviors, illuminating the nuances of morality in real life. Our analysis also revealed gendered patterns and age-related trends that deviated from cultural norms and contradicted popular assumptions about Chinese family values. These findings highlight the importance of naturalistic observations in cultural contexts for understanding how we become moral persons. Observations over the last few decades from a number of orogenic systems have highlighted the possible importance of tectonic exhumation, i.e., ductile thinning and normal faulting, in exhuming rocks once buried in high-pressure conditions. Taiwan is one of the few active orogens in the world where rocks that once experienced high-pressure metamorphism (> 50 km) are exposed at the Earth's surface, providing a natural laboratory for advancing our understanding of exhumation processes. We integrate previously published studies of the Taiwan orogen with new structural, geochronological, and fluid inclusion microthermometry data to argue that tectonic extrusion and structural thinning played a critical role in exhuming the metamorphic core of the orogen until very recently, ca. 0.7 Ma. We propose a two-stage process for exhuming the high-pressure metamorphic rocks of the Yuli Belt: an initial stage where exhumation is driven primarily by pressure gradients in a subduction channel and a second stage that is initiated as an orogen-parallel regional-scale strike-slip zone, the Tailuko shear zone, is offset by an orogen-normal strike-slip zone. The offset generates an extensional bend that is filled with extruding high-pressure rocks as the upper crust is structurally thinned. Evidence for tectonic thinning comes primarily from a low-angle penetrative foliation that records significant vertical shortening and a suite of sub-vertical late-stage, mineral-filled veins. Isotopic dating indicates that the second stage started ca. 2.4–3.1 Ma and ended at ca. 0.7 Ma when the northern Backbone Range orocline started to form. We propose the low-angle foliation formed in the footwall of a regional-scale extensional shear zone that rooted to the east, beneath the forearc. Combined tectonic and erosional processes may have limited the topographic growth of the orogen from ~3.0 to < 1.0 Ma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the association between dietary guideline adherence and overall, outpatient, and emergency medical service utilization in Taiwanese preschoolers. Methods: We selected 614 preschoolers (2–6 years) who had one day of 24-h dietary recall data from the 2013–2016 Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan. The Taiwanese Children Healthy Eating Index (TCHEI) was developed on the basis of Taiwanese Food-Based Dietary Guidelines; it assesses dietary adequacy and eating behavior. Data on the participants' outpatient and emergency medical service utilization were obtained for 2013–2018 from the National Health Insurance Research Database. A multivariable generalized linear model was used to evaluate the association between the TCHEI and medical service utilization for all disease and respiratory diseases. Results: After adjustment for confounding factors, children aged 2–3 years in the Tertile (T) 2 and T3 groups of the TCHEI exhibited 25% (95% CI 0.69–0.83) and 16% (95% CI 0.77–0.92) lower overall medical visits, respectively. The same pattern was noted in the outpatient and emergency visits for all diseases and respiratory diseases. The children aged 4–6 years in the T2 group exhibited 15% (95% CI 0.80–0.91) and 11% (95% CI 0.82–0.97) lower overall visits and visits for respiratory diseases, respectively. Moreover, preschoolers in the T2 group exhibited lower overall medical expenditures than did those in the T1 group. Conclusions: TCHEI score was positively correlated with better nutritional status. Previous studies have found associations between the incidence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and exposure to air pollution or road traffic noise. However, investigations on environmental co-exposures are limited. This study aimed to investigate the association between co-exposure to air pollution and road traffic noise and MetS and its subcomponents. Participants living in Taipei City who underwent at least two health checkups between 2010 and 2016 were included in the study. Data were sourced from the MJ Health database, a longitudinal, large-scale cohort in Taiwan. The monthly traffic noise exposure (Lden and Lnight) was computed using a dynamic noise map. Monthly fine particulate data at one kilometer resolution were computed from satellite imagery data. Cox proportional hazards regression models with month as the underlying time scale were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for the impact of PM2.5 and road traffic noise exposure on the risk of developing MetS or its subcomponents. Data from 10,773 participants were included. We found significant positive associations between incident MetS and PM2.5 (HR: 1.88; 95% CI 1.67, 2.12), Lden (HR: 1.10; 95% CI 1.06, 1.15), and Lnight (HR: 1.07; 95% CI 1.02, 1.13) in single exposure models. Results further showed significant associations with an elevated risk of incident MetS in co-exposure models, with HRs of 1.91 (95% CI 1.69, 2.16) and 1.11 (95% CI 1.06, 1.16) for co-exposure to PM2.5 and Lden, and 1.90 (95% CI 1.68, 2.14) and 1.08 (95% CI 1.02, 1.13) for co-exposure to PM2.5 and Lnight. The HRs for the co-exposure models were higher than those for models with only a single exposure. This study provides evidence that PM2.5 and noise exposure may elevate the risk of incident MetS and its components in both single and co-exposure models. There is a lack of studies that concurrently differentiate the effect of the holiday season from the weekend effect on mortality risk in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We evaluated the mortality risk among patients admitted with AMI who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention, using data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Adult AMI patients admitted during January and February between 2013 and 2020 were enrolled and classified into the holiday season (using the Chinese New Year holiday seasons as an indicator) (n = 1729), weekend (n = 4725), and weekday (n = 14,583) groups according to the first day of admission. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to assess the risk. With the weekday group or the weekend group as the reference, the holiday season group did not have increased risks of in-hospital mortality (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.15; 95% confidence intervals [CI] 0.93–1.42 or aOR 1.23; 95% CI 0.96–1.56) and 7-day mortality (aOR 1.20; 95% CI 0.90–1.58 or aOR 1.24; 95% CI 0.90–1.70). Stratified and subgroup analyses showed similar trends. In the evolving landscape of higher education, challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic have underscored the necessity for innovative teaching methodologies. These challenges have catalyzed the integration of technology into education, particularly in blended learning environments, to bolster self-regulated learning (SRL) and higher-order thinking skills (HOTS). However, increased autonomy in blended learning can lead to learning disruptions if issues are not promptly addressed. In this context, OpenAI's ChatGPT, known for its extensive knowledge base and immediate feedback capability, emerges as a significant educational resource. Nonetheless, there are concerns that students might become excessively dependent on such tools, potentially hindering their development of HOTS. To address these concerns, this study introduces the Guidance-based ChatGPT-assisted Learning Aid (GCLA). This approach modifies the use of ChatGPT in educational settings by encouraging students to attempt problem-solving independently before seeking ChatGPT assistance. When engaged, the GCLA provides guidance through hints rather than direct answers, fostering an environment conducive to the development of SRL and HOTS. A randomized controlled trial (RCT) was employed to examine the impact of the GCLA compared to traditional ChatGPT use in a foundational chemistry course within a blended learning setting. This study involved 61 undergraduate students from a university in Taiwan. The findings reveal that the GCLA enhances SRL, HOTS, and knowledge construction compared to traditional ChatGPT use. These results directly align with the research objective to improve learning outcomes through providing guidance rather than answers by ChatGPT. In conclusion, the introduction of the GCLA has not only facilitated more effective learning experiences in blended learning environments but also ensured that students engage more actively in their educational journey. The implications of this study highlight the potential of ChatGPT-based tools in enhancing the quality of higher education, particularly in fostering essential skills such as self-regulation and HOTS. One of the characteristics of individuals on the autism spectrum is the restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviors, interests, or activities which have been considered the result of a direct deficit in self-regulation skills. Peer-mediated intervention (PMI) is one of the ways to support young children on the autism spectrum for following school routines independently. PMI is an evidence-based practice based on behavioral principles to train typical peers to help with students on the autism spectrum. By using PMI, students on the autism spectrum can have more interaction opportunities with typical peers. Students on the autism spectrum can become less dependent on adult support to complete the expectations independently or with peers' support. The aim of this study is to use PMI to support students with autism and ADHD aged 7–8 in a regular classroom to complete the behavioral expectations in Taiwan. This study used a multiple probe design across three participants to determine the effects of the intervention. The researchers trained seven typically developing peers on how to prompt and reinforce the target children. This study took both peers and target children's data. The data shows a positive result for target children to follow the expectations independently and most peer models can prompt and reinforce the target children after being trained. Scholars have long been interested in understanding organizational slack. Peng et al. (2010) is a landmark study examining the effect of slack on firm performance. We seek to advance our understanding of the topic in three ways. First, we replicate the core findings of Peng et al. (2010) by drawing on a major and yet less investigated economy in Asia—Taiwan. Second, we differentiate the effect of slack by investigating both short- and long–term performance. Third, in addition to CEO duality, our study also examines the moderating effects of business groups and family firms as two widespread governance factors in Asia. Our results suggest that the effect of organizational slack on firm performance is contingent on the short– versus long–term perspective. Furthermore, we find that the slack–performance relationship is shaped by boundary conditions. This study investigates the utilization of design thinking by a university instructor in the development and delivery of an interdisciplinary curriculum. It examines the challenges encountered and the coping strategies employed during the process. The research, conducted as a case study of an interdisciplinary program course at a university in southern Taiwan from September to December 2022, involved data collection through field observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. All data were transcribed verbatim, coded, and triangulated to enhance research validity. The findings suggest that design thinking serves as an effective methodology for interdisciplinary curriculum design and teaching. It emphasizes the integration of practice and application to facilitate students' interdisciplinary collaboration and co-creation. Additionally, the study evaluates teaching strategies, with a focus on the role of visual tools, communication, and on-site observation. The insights gained from this research provide valuable perspectives on challenges in interdisciplinary teaching, particularly in a post-pandemic context. They guided the development of effective practices in Taiwan and beyond, addressing crucial aspects such as the roles of instructors, resource allocation, and the cultivation of interdisciplinary talent. Based on the theoretical frameworks of Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory and Theory of Triadic Influence (TTI), the study aimed to examine the relationships between Problematic Internet Use (PIU) and different sources of social support in a large sample of adolescents, and whether refusal self-efficacy of Internet use mediates the relationships. This cross-sectional study recruited 1127 participants from junior high schools in Taiwan, and were asked to complete self-report questionnaires containing the Social Support Scale, Virtual Social Support Scale, Refusal Self-Efficacy of Internet Use Scale, and Chinese Internet Addiction Scale-Revised. Results showed that refusal self-efficacy negatively predicted PIU, and social support from different sources and has a varied effect on PIU. Online social support was positively correlated with PIU, while offline social support from parents had a negative correlation with PIU. However, the relationship between off-line social support from friends and PIU, and the relationship between off-line social support from friends and refusal self-efficacy did not correlate. In addition, refusal self-efficacy partially mediated the positive prediction of PIU by online social support, while it fully mediated the negative prediction of PIU by offline social support from parents. Our findings supported Bandura's theory and TTI, which indicated that human behaviors are influenced by environmental and intrapersonal factors, suggesting that different types of social support may lead to various effects on PIU and that refusal self-efficacy can mediate the predictions of social support for PIU. This study aims to examine the effects of teachers' seniority, emotional intelligence (EI), and team-member exchange (TMX) quality on their job performance in primary schools. In particular, the mediating role of TMX on the relationship between EI and job performance, and the moderated mediating effect of teacher seniority on EI-TMX-job performance relationships were scrutinised. Data were collected from 387 teachers of primary schools in Taiwan. The SPSS PROCESS macro and structural equation modelling (SEM) were applied to test the hypotheses using SPSS 26.0. The research findings indicated that primary teachers' EI positively affected their TMX and job performance. The findings also provide empirical evidence for the positive mediating effect of TMX on the relationship between EI and job performance, as well as the negative moderating effect of teachers' seniority on the linkage between EI and TMX. Mindfulness-based relapse prevention (MBRP) has been found to be effective to reduce the likelihood of relapse. We aimed to confirm the effects of the MBRP on frequency of drug use, negative outcome expectancies, positive outcome expectancies, treatment readiness, depression, anxiety, and mindfulness of community-dwelling people with illicit drug abuse issues. In this study, we designed a randomized clinical trial (RCT) to test the efficacy of MBRP in reducing relapse compared with the treatment as usual (TAU). The participants in this study were 49 people (experimental group: 24, control group: 25) enrolled in one community treatment center located in Taoyuan City in Taiwan. In the experimental group, the mindfulness-based relapse prevention program was applied once a week for 2 h over 8 weeks. Baseline, post-session, and 3-month follow-up assessments were conducted. Generalized estimating equations were used to examine the efficacy of the intervention. Compared with the control group, the experimental group showed significantly mitigated depression, anxiety, and decreased positive outcome expectancies of drug use. Mindfulness-based relapse prevention was an effective intervention as a relapse prevention strategy during a 3-month follow-up period. We found that mindfulness is especially beneficial to regulate emotions, thereby reducing the severity of drug addiction for illegal drug abusers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Emotion dysregulation is one of the challenges that children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families face. It is unclear whether emotion dysregulation plays a mediating role in the relationship between sensory processing patterns and problem behaviors among these children. This study examined the relations between emotion dysregulation, behavioral problems, and sensory processing patterns among fifty-seven young children with ASD. Behavioral problems and sensory processing patterns were moderately to strongly correlated with emotion dysregulation. The relationship between sensory processing patterns and behavioral problems was significant with emotion dysregulation as a mediator. These findings help identify the relationship between emotion dysregulation, sensory processing patterns, and behavioral problems to facilitate the planning of intervention strategies for young children with ASD. School practitioners' receptivity to reform influences the success of policy implementation. In Taiwan, the Ministry of Education launched a curriculum reform in 2019. To determine how to enhance school agency for the policy, we explored the individual and contextual factors affecting receptivity to the new curriculum. With a survey design, this study recruited secondary school teachers and principals throughout Taiwan as samples. Hierarchical regression models were conducted to examine the effects of individual factors (conceptions of distributed leadership and collective learning) and organizational culture (power distance, uncertainty avoidance, and academic emphasis) on practitioners' receptivity to curriculum reform. Both the main and interactive effects were investigated. The results indicate that respondents who positively conceived distributed leadership and collective learning were more receptive to change. Regarding the three indicators of organizational culture, we found no significant effect of power distance, while the main effect of uncertainty avoidance and the moderation effect of academic emphasis existed. Those who perceived their schools with high uncertainty avoidance levels were more resistant to reform efforts. Besides, a positive linkage between teacher conception of collective learning and affection for change was more evident in schools with less academic emphasis. Our study suggests that school reforms must be understood within the individual and school contexts. Background: Angelica L. sensu lato is a taxonomically complex genus, and many studies have utilized morphological and molecular features to resolve its classification issues. In Taiwan, there are six taxa within Angelica, and their taxonomic treatments have been a subject of controversy. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis incorporating morphological and molecular (cpDNA and nrDNA) characteristics to revise the taxonomic treatments of Angelica in Taiwan. Results: As a result of our research, we have revised the classification between A. dahurica var. formosana and A. pubescens and merged two varieties of A. morrisonicola into a single taxon. A new taxon, A. aliensis, has been identified and found to share a close relationship with A. tarokoensis. Based on the morphological and molecular characteristics data, it has been determined that the former three taxa should be grouped into the Eurasian Angelica clade, while the remaining four taxa should belong to the littoral Angelica clade. Furthermore, Angelica species in Taiwan distributed at higher altitudes displayed higher genetic diversity, implying that the central mountain range of Taiwan serves as a significant reservoir of plant biodiversity. Genetic drift, such as bottlenecks, has been identified as a potential factor leading to the fixation or reduction of genetic diversity of populations in most Angelica species. We provide key to taxa, synopsis, phenology, and distribution for each taxon of Taiwan. Conclusions: Our comprehensive analysis of morphological and molecular features has shed light on the taxonomic complexities within Angelica in Taiwan, resolving taxonomic issues and providing valuable insights into the phylogenetic relationships of Angelica in Taiwan. As an emerging technology, blockchain has recently gained attention in both academic and economic fields, but its adoption is not yet widespread in the banking sector in Taiwan. As academics have paid scant attention to this topic, this study determines the critical factors affecting blockchain adoption from the organizational perspective in the banking industry. We propose hybrid methods to fill the gap in the literature. First, we apply the technology-organization-environment framework as the basis and combine relevant factors as a framework to identify the relevant evaluation factors. Second, we propose a hybrid method that integrates the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) with the evaluation based on distance from average solution (EDAS) approach and employs DEMATEL to measure the importance of the factors and alternatives to blockchain as ranked by the EDAS method. According to the ranking results, we identify the best preference among alternatives to blockchain. The results suggest that organizational and technological aspects are the main considerations to enhance and promote the effectiveness of blockchain adoption. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has imposed substantial impacts on the global hotel industry. This study employed a two-tier stochastic frontier model to investigate the dynamics of transaction information distribution within the tourist hotel lodging prices in Taiwan from July 2019 to November 2020. The primary objective was to analyze the disparities in price information between consumers and hoteliers before and after the outbreak of COVID-19. Empirical findings reveal a notable reduction in the divergence of lodging price information between consumers and hoteliers post the COVID-19 outbreak, particularly in metropolitan areas. The shift in consumer group structures within hotel operations induced by the pandemic has, in turn, exerted an influence on the pricing strategies adopted by hoteliers. The empirical results underscore that the outbreak of COVID-19 has contributed to a more transparent and comprehensive market price information environment, consequently diminishing the asymmetry in information between hoteliers and consumers. This study discusses the social welfare policies for Indigenous peoples in Taiwan and India. Offering critical insights into the historical progression of social welfare policies, this study provides an analytical review of the existing policies and outlines the different approaches to social welfare with an emphasis on best practices in both countries. The synthesis of literature makes it evident that Taiwan and India show a notable shift towards mainstreaming indigeneity. The primary approach of this reformative process involves dismantling the historical impacts of colonization and adopting more inclusive policy frameworks for the welfare of their Indigenous peoples. This study outlines similarities such as increasing budgetary allocations, framing social welfare policies based on Indigenous rights and values, and recognizing culture as an essential aspect within welfare policies. However, the Taiwanese social welfare policy is characteristically operating towards transitional and historical justice for Taiwan. On the other hand, India has adopted a dynamic social development model of social welfare policy that works on need-based action. The dichotomy between right-based (Taiwan) and need-based social development policy (India) reinforcements characteristically local policy dynamics and modelling towards country's approach to Indigenous social welfare. The purpose of the study is to investigate long-term changes on lymphoscintigraphy and their association with clinical factors in breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) patients. This single-center cohort study included BCRL patients who underwent baseline and follow-up lymphoscintigraphy. The percentage of excessive circumference (PEC) of the affected upper limb compared with the unaffected side was used as an indicator of the clinical severity of BCRL. Each 99mTc-phytate lymphoscintigraphy image was categorized according to the Taiwan lymphoscintigraphy staging system. Clinical parameters and the lymphoscintigraphy stage at baseline and follow-up were compared and analyzed. Eighty-seven patients were included. Baseline and follow-up lymphoscintigraphies were performed at median 7 (interquartile range [IQR]: 2‒14) and 78 (IQR: 49‒116) months after surgery, respectively. Both lymphoscintigraphy stage and PEC showed variable change with overall increases in their severity. Stepwise multivariable analysis revealed follow-up lymphoscintigraphy stage (P = 0.001) to be independent variables for PEC at follow-up, however, baseline lymphoscintigraphy stage was not. The clinical courses of BCRL and patients' lymphoscintigraphy patterns showed diverse changes over long-term follow-up. In addition to initial lymphoscintigraphy for diagnosis, lymphatic remapping by follow-up lymphoscintigraphy can be useful to visualize functional changes in the lymphatic system that may guide the optimal management in BCRL. The objective of this study was aimed to develop and validate an instrument for post-COVID-19 symptoms in adults. Data were collected from adults with a previous COVID-19 diagnosis in Taiwan. We developed the initial instrument through systematic review and expert feedback. Its validity was tested using exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and criterion-related validity, while its reliability was tested using Cronbach's alpha. In total, 310 adults participated in this study. Examination of the EFA clearly classified a five-factor model with 24 items (Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin = 0.903; Bartlett's test of sphericity: X2 = 5242.956, df = 276, p < 0.01). The goodness of fit indices of the CFA were as follows: chi-square = 635.172 (p < 0.01), normed chi-square = 2.669, standardized root mean square residual = 0.077, root mean square error of approximation = 0.073, comparative fit index = 0.922, and Tuker and Lewis index = 0.910. The value of Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the total items was 0.941, and the values for the subscales ranged from 0.813 to 0.924. The instrument exhibited acceptable psychometric properties, proving it to be a valuable tool for evaluating post-COVID-19 symptoms in patients at hospitals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The variations in rainfall and its spatial and temporal distribution in wet and dry seasons have increased substantially globally owing to the effect of climate change. These disparities can lead to droughts and severe water shortages, as exemplified by the unprecedented drought in Taiwan in 2021, which is considered the worst in 50 years. From a broader perspective, the overall climate and water resources on Earth are influenced by factors, such as the El Niño phenomenon and solar activity. Accordingly, this study examines the relationship between rainfall and planetary- or large-scale influencing factors, such as sunspots and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation. Additionally, rainfall patterns under various conditions are predicted using machine learning models combined with wavelet analysis. These models use 60-years historical data to build models, and the Bayesian network model exhibited the best overall prediction accuracy (85.7%), with sunspots emerging as the most influential factor. The novel findings of this study strongly confirmed that the relationship between sunspot and local rainfall patterns can serve as a valuable reference for water resources management and planning by relevant organizations. Motivated by the idea that "coverage by mass media can play a role in alleviating information problems even if it does not break genuine news" (Fang and Peress, 2009: 2050), this study is first to relate media coverage to performing moving average (MA) technical trading in the cross-section. Testing a sample of Taiwanese listed stocks over the period 1996 to 2021, we find that the MA strategy's profitability is high (low) for portfolios grouped by stocks with low (high) media coverage. For the "low-media-coverage" portfolio, the MA strategy earns about 24.75% per annum, adjusting for the Fama–French five risk factors. The MA's superior performance on the "low-media-coverage" portfolio remains after controlling for market liquidity and market sentiment. We also find that the low media effect on the MA strategy's profitability is more pronounced during recessionary periods. Our overall results are supported by the hypothesis that a low level of media coverage induces investor inattention and slows information diffusion, which amplifies the investors' under reaction bias and stronger price continuation, being associated with a higher MA strategy's profitability. Citizen science initiatives offer an informal way to encourage the general public to engage in science learning, and contributes to the development of a more stable supply of science professionals by arousing volunteers' enthusiasm for a science career. This study aimed to identify the contribution that science service makes to volunteers' experience and the influence it has on the relationship between their experience and beliefs, and on their eventual career orientation. This study tested the effect of social cognitive variables on volunteers' career interests in science using Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT). The sample consisted of 241 volunteers taking part in a science volunteer project which is administered by the Ministry of Science and Technology in Taiwan. We used structural equation modeling (SEM) and PROCESS Macro 4.1 to test the structural relationships and mediating hypotheses proposed in this study. Building on the SCCT, our findings indicated that self-efficacy in science service, satisfaction with science service, and social support are contributing factors to the science volunteers' career interest in a scientific profession. This study adds to the SCCT literature by clarifying how a volunteer-based citizen science initiative as an informal science learning platform may affect the participants' career decisions. Wafer probe test plays a crucial role to distinguish the good dies from the remaining defected dies on the wafers via the probe card as the testing signal interface between the tester and the integrated circuits on the fabricated wafers. Unexpected probe card failures that happen during the testing process will affect testing quality, reduce overall equipment efficiency and productivity. In practice, the engineers rely on domain knowledge and the process of trial and error for fault diagnosis and troubleshooting. However, as the IC device features are continuously shrinking with an increasing number and density of the bond pads of the circuits on the wafer, fault diagnosis and troubleshooting for probe card have become complicated and time-consuming. To fill the gap, this study aims to develop a data-driven framework that integrates rough set theory and domain knowledge to derive effective decision rules to enhance the decision quality and efficiency for advanced quality control and smart manufacturing. An empirical study was conducted in a leading semiconductor testing company in Taiwan for validation. The proposed framework can shorten fault diagnosis procedure and enhance productivity, while enhancing probing test integrity to reduce both the producer risk and customer risk. Clinical practices on acute post-operative and endogenous endophthalmitis (EnE) are highly variable among clinicians due to a lack of up-to-date, high-quality evidential support. An expert consensus is thus much needed. A panel consisting of ten retinal specialists in Taiwan was organized. They evaluated relevant literature and developed key questions regarding acute post-operative and EnE that are cardinal for practice but yet to have conclusive evidence. The panel then attempted to reach consensus on all the key questions accordingly. There were eight key questions proposed and their respective consensus statements were summarized as follows: Gram staining and culture are still the standard procedures for the diagnosis of endophthalmitis. Vitrectomy is recommended to be performed earlier than the timing proposed by the Endophthalmitis Vitrectomy Study (EVS). Routine intracameral antibiotic injection for post-cataract surgery endophthalmitis prophylaxis is not recommended because of potential compounding error hazards and a lack of support from high-quality studies. Routine fundus examination is recommended for all patients with pyogenic liver abscess. In EnE, vitrectomy is recommended if diffused and dense vitritis is present, or if the disease progresses.
