The paper mill crisis, which is polluting the scholarly literature with fake papers, has led to record-breaking article retractions and continues to erode trust in science. While publishers and other scholarly publishing stakeholders have mobilized to address this grave threat to research and publishing integrity, action from the library community has been lacking. This article explores the ongoing impact of the paper mill crisis and its causes. It also reviews the steps being taken across the sector to address it. This includes actions taken by publishers, integrity sleuths and organizations like Retraction Watch, NISO and STM. Based on the severity of the crisis and the current response, this article recommends actions libraries can take to help address the crisis and clean up the mess paper mills have made in the scholarly literature. At a time of declining trust and growing threats facing society, it is critical that all scholarly publishing stakeholders, including librarians, help hold the line on publishing integrity and restore trust in science.

The data presented here comes from the Perret and Solier (2022) study. 30 participants handwrote labels for 150 black-and-white drawings. The experiment was carried out using the DmDx program. Response times and production errors were the two behavioral reported measures. DmDx scripts and data are available on the OSF platform (DOI: https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/GAZF3). These data should be useful for pre-testing to explore new hypotheses, as well as for methodological elements (e.g., sample size estimation, estimation of a priori distributions for Bayesian analyses).

Arthropod-borne arboviral diseases—including dengue, Zika, and chikungunya—place a substantial burden on the health of populations, globally. Dengue alone is endemic in more than 100 countries and causes more than 96 million symptomatic cases and approximately 40,000 deaths annually. The recent surge in arboviral disease outbreaks, coupled with the World Health Organization’s newly published vector control guidelines, accentuates the imperative to understand the dispersion of disease-carrying mosquitoes across diverse spatial and temporal scales. However, traditional surveillance mechanisms often fall short because of workforce limitations, logistical complexities, jurisdictional boundaries, and budgetary constraints, especially in low- and low-middle-income countries. In this article, we systematically report the design, implementation, and iterative enhancement of a groundbreaking school-based citizen science initiative for augmenting mosquito surveillance in the Solomon Islands. Key reflections encompass the initiative’s role in supporting routine government-led disease vector monitoring, sustainability through integration and fostering participant engagement, and the amalgamation of citizen-collected data with government surveillance activities. The article also discusses the impact of the citizen science initiative with regard to the Solomon Islands’ pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals. Our findings underscore the potential of citizen science methods to support and extend public health surveillance activities and to serve as a community-engagement-for-behaviour-change tool in resource-constrained contexts.

Introduction: Social Prescribing has an established recognition regarding the benefits provided to the health-related social needs of adults, but little is known about how the intervention addresses young people's needs. There is optimism regarding the central role of two core mechanisms that allows social prescribing to be effective, such as the empathetic role of Link Workers and the connection with community resources. This paper aims to describe the role played by Link Workers working a Social Prescribing intervention targeting young people. Description: This paper adopts a case study methodology to describe the role of Link Workers addressing young people's needs and implementing Social Prescribing scheme in Sheffield (UK). Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with four of the seven link workers of one organisation based in Sheffield. Data were analysed through an inductive approach for emerging themes. Discussion: We provided a description of the profiles and background of Link Workers and described the three models of referral pathways into the intervention. The paper also shows how Link Workers identify young people's needs and how they connect with the community. Conclusion: Based on the insights and the internationally accepted definition of Social Prescribing, we provide a visual representation of the Social Prescribing model and discuss challenges. Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionally impacted people experiencing homelessness, including people sleeping rough, people in temporary accommodation and those living in boarding houses. This paper reports on intersectoral responses across six health and social care agencies in Inner Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Prior to the pandemic the six agencies had established an Intersectoral Homelessness Health Strategy (IHHS), in recognition of the need for intersectoral collaboration to address the complex health needs of people experiencing homelessness. Description: The governance structure of the IHHS provided a platform for several innovative intersectoral responses to the pandemic. A realist informed framework was used to select, describe, and analyse case studies of intersectoral collaboration. Discussion: The resultant six critical success factors (trust, shared ways of working, agile collaboration, communication mechanisms, authorising environment, and sustained momentum), align with the existing literature that explores effective intersectoral collaboration in complex health or social care settings. This paper goes further by describing intersectoral collaboration 'in action', setting a strong foundation for future collaborative initiatives. Conclusion: While there is no single right approach to undertaking intersectoral collaboration, which is highly context specific, the six critical success factors identified could be applied to other health issues where dynamic collaboration and integration of healthcare is needed. Historical aerial images constitute an invaluable heritage that requires meticulous recovery and preservation. Interest in this task has been shown at the international level, where several congresses have been held to analyse orthophotographs production techniques, as well as the state of the art of preservation and dissemination of historical material. Innovative image orthorectification models, such as Structure for Motion and Multi-View Stereo, derived from classical photogrammetric methods such as collinearity equations, Direct Linear Transformation and Rational Function Model, have shown excellent results in the creation of 3D models from images captured by mobile devices and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). These advances open up a new line of research for its application in historical flights, characterised by unsuitable flight and conservation conditions, with geometries away from the conventional geometric model and the absence of orientation parameters. On the basis of the papers presented at the EuroSDR congresses in 2019 and 2022, and using SfM and MVS algorithmic programmes, research on the processes of orthorectification of historical images has been deepened, particularly in the processing of large volumes of data. The methodology was applied to what is potentially the largest block of data to date, comprising over 4,000 images covering an area of over 40,000 square kilometres corresponding to the A-series flight, carried out by the US Army Map Service between 1945 and 1946. This technical process represents a significant step towards the accurate correction of valuable historical aerial imagery, contributing to architectural study, urban planning, property organisation, and historical heritage conservation. Sustainable interior architectural education stands as a pivotal force in shaping the future of design, environmental responsibility, and societal well-being. This abstract encapsulates the essential elements that define the foundation of such education. The primary goal of this research is to delineate the ten fundamental elements that constitute the framework for sustainable interior architectural education. This investigation draws upon Scopus-indexed papers published within the timeframe spanning from 2010 to 2023. Through a comprehensive analysis of these scholarly sources which contributed from 38 referred journals, this study aims to distill and define the key components that underpin the pedagogical approach to sustainable interior architecture. Sustainable Design Principles form the cornerstone, instilling the integration of environmental, economic, and social dimensions into design. Environmental Awareness is paramount, fostering a deep understanding of design's ecological footprint. Sustainable Materials and Construction underscore responsible material choices and construction techniques. Integration of Renewable Energy and Life Cycle Assessment equips students to harness clean energy and assess long-term environmental impacts. Introduction: This paper describes 'Project 8', a campaign that aims to reduce glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) to 8% or more among patients with diabetes mellitus, utilising healthcare professionals and local community residents and focusing on education and support. The study is based in Uonuma—a small rural city in Japan with a declining population and an increased number of older people. Description: 'Project 8' began in Uonuma's Koide Hospital in 2008. The Uonuma School for Community Health and Social Care was established in 2011 with the cooperation of a clinic's general practitioner. Medical students, trainees, doctors, and health care professionals have been holding 'open schools' (daytime lectures) and 'night schools' (evening lectures) to educate the community residents about various health issues. Through repeated lectures, the residents have been made aware of lifestyle-related diseases, including diabetes, and the meaning of 'Project 8'. Discussion: Over the last decade, the hospital's campaign has expanded within the community, showing a statistically significant reduction of diabetic patients with HbA1c ≥ 8%, which successfully deferred the start of dialysis for many of them. Introduction: Telemonitoring has been proposed as an effective method to support integrated care for older people with hypertension and type 2 diabetes. This paper examines acceptability of telemontioring, its role in supporting integrated care, and identifies scale-up barriers. Methods: A concurrent triangulation mixed-methods study, including in-depth interviews (n = 29) and quantitative acceptability tool (n = 55) was conducted among individuals who underwent a 12-month telemonitoring routine. The research was guided by the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability. Interviews were analysed using template content analysis (TCA). Results: TCA identified seven domains of acceptability, with twenty-one subthemes influencing it positively or negatively. In the quantitative survey, acceptability was high across all seven domains with an overall score of 4.4 out of 5. Urban regions showed higher acceptability than rural regions (4.5 vs. 4.3), with rural participants perceiving initial training and participation effort as significantly more burdensome than their urban counterparts. Discussion: Patients described several instances where telemonitoring supported self-management, education, treatment, and identification elements of the integrated care package. However, there were barriers that may limit its further scale-up. Conclusion: For further scale-up, it is important to screen patients for monitoring eligibility, adapt telemonitoring devices to elderly needs, combine telemonitoring with health education, involve family members, and establish follow-up programmes. The population in Singapore is ageing, adding pressure to community care as the health and social needs of its residents increase. This has accelerated the pace at which Regional Health Systems adopt and deliver its population health strategies from early prevention, chronic disease management, crisis care to end-of-life care. To this end, the Central Health Integrated Care Network (ICN) began its journey to develop Communities of Care (CoCs) with other health and social care partners to meet the needs of residents in the Central Zone of Singapore. This paper describes the processes and steps taken by Central Health ICN to build partnerships with other agencies and organisations to build place-based models of care in the local neighbourhoods. The faciliating factors and the barriers faced in the implementation of CoCs were described to allow sharing of such learnings on large scale change. Strategies in overcoming some of the challenges were also presented to demonstrate the iterative processes required in building integrated place-based models of care to meet the needs of the residents in different communities. Introduction: Development and implementation of the Townsville Lung Cancer Referral Pathway [TLCRP] aims to reduce delays and improve referral patterns of people with suspected lung cancer in north Queensland, Australia. Reported in this paper is the experiences and perspectives of general practitioners [GPs] and specialists of the TLCRP. Methods: This was a descriptive qualitative study nested within a larger project evaluating TLCRP, utilising a broader implementation science framework. In-depth, semi-structured interviews with GPs and specialists were conducted. An iterative, inductive thematic analysis of interview transcripts was used to derive key codes, then grouped into themes regarding participant experiences and perceptions. Results: Data analysis identified two major themes and several sub-themes. The major themes were variation in the uptake of TLCRP and enhancing coordinated care and communication. Discussion: Several enablers and barriers to implementing TLCRP were identified. Barriers to adaptation of TLCRP included lack of clinical time, resistance to changing referral patterns, lack of familiarity or experience with HealthPathways and technology issues. Conclusion: Emerging themes from this study may be used to reduce the barriers and improve uptake of TLCRP and other health care pathways in the local health service and may have wider relevance in other settings. This paper presents a comprehensive assessment of indoor air quality (IAQ) in newly constructed apartment buildings in small and medium-sized cities, with a specific focus on formaldehyde (HCHO) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as major contributors to sick building syndrome (SBS). The study aims to measure using the World Health Organization (WHO) process test method and compare the concentrations of HCHO and TVOC indoors and outdoors, assess the indoor temperature levels, evaluate the airtightness performance, and analyze the impact of these factors on IAQ. The research was conducted in Yasmeen Tower and Al Wahat Tower in Ajman Al Jurf area. The results showed that in Yasmeen Tower, unoccupied one-bedroom units had high concentrations of HCHO and TVOC. The average HCHO concentration was 198 µg/m3, with the highest recorded concentration at 265 µg/m3. The average TVOC concentration was 1,244 µg/m3. In Al Wahat Tower, even higher levels of HCHO were observed. The highest recorded concentration reached 445 µg/m3, with an average of 323 µg/m3. Airtightness performance was assessed, with the effective leakage area ranging from 139 cm2 to 301 cm2 for the 7 units, averaging at 193 cm2. Onebedroom units exhibited higher airtightness. Correlation analysis revealed a strong relationship between room temperature and both HCHO and TVOC concentrations, indicating that higher room temperatures were associated with increased pollutant levels. Moreover, improved airtightness performance correlated with decreased HCHO and TVOC concentrations. The findings emphasize the importance of effective ventilation systems, temperature control, and airtightness measures to mitigate indoor air pollutants and enhance IAQ in multi-unit dwellings. The study provides valuable insights for policymakers, architects, and residents to address IAQ concerns and promote healthier indoor environments. However, the study's limitations should be considered, and further research is recommended to broaden the understanding of IAQ in residential buildings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Non-communicable diseases, such as arterial hypertension (HTN) and type-2 diabetes (T2D), pose a global public health problem. Integrated care with focus on person-centred principles aims to enhance healthcare quality and access. Previous qualitative research has identified facilitators and barriers for scaling-up integrated care, however the lack of standardized terms and measures hinder cross-country comparisons. This paper addresses these gaps by presenting a generic codebook for qualitative research on integrated care implementation for HTN and T2D. Description: The codebook serves as a tool for deductive or deductive-inductive qualitative analysis, organizing concepts and themes from qualitative data. It consists of nine first level and 39 second level themes. First level codes cover core issues; and second level codes provide detailed insights into facilitators and barriers. Discussion: This codebook is more widely applicable than previously developed tools because it includes a broader scope of stakeholders across micro, meso, and macro levels, and the themes being derived from highly diverse health systems across highand low-income countries. Conclusion: The codebook is a useful tool for implementation research on integrated care for HTN and T2D at global scale. Introduction: Action 3 of the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing plan is to deliver integrated care to improve older adults' lives. Integrated care is vital in meeting the complex needs of people with dementia but little is known about how this is or could be delivered in low and middle income countries (LMIC). This paper provides insights into previously unknown care system structures and on the potential and reality of delivering integrated care in Central America for people with dementia. Methods: A social network analysis (SNA) methodology was adopted to engage with providers of services for older adults and families with dementia in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica and Panama. Sixty-eight (68) semi-structured interviews were completed, 57 with organisations and 11 with families. Results: Across the five countries there was evidence of fragmentation and low integration within the dementia care systems. A variety of services and types of providers are present in all five countries, and high levels of diversified connections exist among organisations of differing disciplines. However, unawareness among network members about other members that they could potentially form active links with is a barrier on the path to integration. Conclusion: This innovative and robust study demonstrates SNA can be applied to evaluate LMIC care systems. Findings provide baselines of system structures and insights into where resources are needed to fortify integration strategies. Results suggest that Central American countries have the building blocks in place to develop integrated care systems to meet the needs of people with dementia, but the links across service providers are opportunistic rather than context based coordinated integration policies. Introduction: The healthcare delivery system of Assam faces several challenges to provide affordable, accessible and quality care services. GNRC (Guwahati Neurological Research Center) is the first super-speciality hospital to address many of these gaps by delivering integrated affordable healthcare services to the populations of Assam and other parts of North-eastern India. Description & Discussion: This paper describes the implementation of a care delivery model which provides integrated care delivery services through linking hospitals to primary healthcare services, including preventive, promotive, and curative care, along with delivering easily accessible and affordable care to the people of Assam and other parts of North-eastern India. Conclusion: The proposed model is the first innovative approach from Northeastern India, Assam, to deliver affordable, accessible and patient-centric hospital led community-based preventive, promotive, and primary, secondary, and tertiary hospital-based care. It is anticipated that GNRC's "Affordable Health Mission" will help redesign and integrate the way primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare is delivered to the population of Assam in helping patients manage their own health and reduce the numbers that needs to be admitted to secondary care and tertiary care by improving patients' independence and well-being as well as dramatically reducing the cost to the overall health system. In this perspective paper we use publicly-available data to show that, despite much positive rhetoric in support of reforms in Scotland to integrate health and social care, these reforms, in their current state, have failed to meet their stated objectives. Rather than regress to the previous system, we propose continued evaluation of even more radical forms of such integration. This analysis, and set of future proposals, are timely given current considerations with respect to a National Care Service in Scotland and recent similar reforms in England and in other countries. Introduction: Population Health Management (PHM) focusses on keeping the whole population as healthy as possible. As such, it could be a promising approach for longterm health improvement in type 2 diabetes. This scoping review aimed to examine the extent to which and how PHM is used in the care for people with type 2 diabetes. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase were searched between January 2000 and September 2021 for papers on self-reported PHM initiatives for type 2 diabetes. Eligible initiatives were described using the analytical framework for PHM. Results: In total, 25 studies regarding 18 PHM initiatives for type 2 diabetes populations were included. There is considerable variation in whether and how the PHM steps are operationalized in existing PHM initiatives. Population identification, impact evaluation, and quality improvement processes were generally part of the PHM initiatives. Triple Aim assessment and risk stratification actions were scarce or explained in little detail. Moreover, cross-sector integration is key in PHM but scarce in practice. Conclusion: Operationalization of PHM in practice is limited compared to the PHM steps described in the analytical framework. Extended risk stratification and integration efforts would contribute to whole-person care and further health improvements within the population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The discipline of urban planning is an ever-evolving and essential area of study that plays a pivotal role in the formation and development of future cities. In this research, we seek to examine the varied risks inherent in urban planning projects and how these risks impact decision-making and growth. The research is a scoping review, which includes synthesis and analysis of various articles in the field. The study's findings indicate a wide range of risks, including natural risks, environmental risks, societal risks, and other complex risks that impede the process of decision-making and inhibit the progress of urban planning. The significance of multidisciplinary cooperation, risk assessment approaches, and data-driven decision-making is underscored. Moreover, it highlights the need for implementing strategies that enhance resilience and adaptability, promoting the construction of robust infrastructure, and implementing efficient financial risk mitigation strategies. This study gives useful insights into the intricate nature of urban planning and presents suggestions for academics and policymakers to foster the development of urban settings that are more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient. The longstanding illicit trafficking of archaeological artefacts has persistently presented a global issue, posing a substantial threat to cultural heritage. This paper introduces an innovative automated system that utilises Natural Language Processing (NLP), Machine Learning (ML), and Social Network Analysis (SNA) to construct a Knowledge Graph for antiquities. The objective is to offer insights into the provenance of artefacts and identify potential instances of illicit trafficking. The paper delineates a comprehensive methodology, from the ontology to the Knowledge Graph. The methodology comprises four distinct phases: the initial phase involves tailoring existing ontologies to match project-specific needs; the second phase centres on selecting appropriate technologies, and scraping and text-mining tools are designed to extract pertinent data from textual sources; the third phase centres in the creation of a robust and accurate Knowledge Graph that captures artefact provenance. The paper suggests employing NLP models, specifically utilising Named Entity Recognition (NER) techniques. These models automatically extract relevant information from the unstructured provenance texts, organising them as events to which both objects and actors participated with their locations and dates. The final phase is concerned with defining and building the Knowledge Graph. The authors explore a property graph model that distinctively represents nodes and relationships, each augmented by associated properties. Employing an SNA approach, the model is projected in multiple network levels of ownership histories (actor-object network) or actor relationships (actor-actor network). This approach reveals patterns within the antiquities market. When integrated with the authors’ recommended strategies such as crowdsourced ontology definition, collaboration with reputable organisations for quality sources, and the application of transfer learning techniques, the suggested approach holds promising implications for the protection of cultural heritage.

The current ubiquitous use of 3D recording technologies in archaeological fieldwork, for a large part due to the application of budget-friendly (drone) sensors and the availability of many low-cost image-based 3D modelling software packages, has exponentially increased the amount of 3D data of archaeological sites and landscapes. Various applications have advanced far beyond the experimental phase, such as the deployment of 3D surface recording for excavation interpretation, as a complementary data layer for prospection and as the basis for visualisation/presentation. Of particular attention here is the degree to which drone 3D recording can further advance the understanding of archaeological site topography. In this paper, current developments in the field of 3D recording will be discussed in the context of the ‘Archaeology of Archaeology’ approach, which is being developed at the University of Amsterdam. This paper is the result of a Round Table discussion at the CAA conference on April 5, 2023, in Amsterdam. The examples at the conference sessions clearly showed how beneficial it is when 3D recording techniques can be combined with other available information. In particular, the potential of old photographs was highlighted. Our experiences at Troy suggest that re-excavation of dumps and specific trenches and comparison of finds are also highly promising. In addition, considering the manifold possibilities of 3D hard- and software and the sheer quantity of the data available for a site such as Troy, several attendees to the session emphasized the necessity of a problem-oriented approach when researching and developing a platform as an access point, organising, and presenting collected information.

The aim of our study was to investigate whether theories of congruence are better tested using polynomial regression analysis, rather than expressing discrepancy between implicit and explicit measures as continuous or categorical difference scores. This paper also aims to make knowledge more accessible by providing a step-by-step explanation of both methods, illustrating differences between them, and making materials openly available for other researchers. In this paper, implicit and explicit measures of self-esteem are used as predictors for depressive symptoms, anxiety, and aggression in a general population sample (N = 135). Explicit self-esteem was measured using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, implicit self-esteem was measured using the Implicit Association Test, and the Symptom Questionnaire was used to measure depressive symptoms, anxiety, and aggression. The results show those difference score models all imply that the discrepancy between implicit and explicit self-esteem explains depression and anxiety, but not aggression. However, polynomial regression analysis shows that depression and anxiety are not accounted for by the explicit-implicit discrepancy as such, but are foremost explained by explicit self-esteem. Polynomial regression has the potential to evaluate more complex and more detailed hypotheses than what would be possible using statistical approaches based on discrepancy scores. It is therefore recommended for future research aimed at disentangling the roles of explicit and implicit self-esteem in psychological outcomes.

This paper summarizes the cinematic demixing (CDX) track of the Sound Demixing Challenge 2023 (SDX’23). We provide a comprehensive summary of the challenge setup, detailing the structure of the competition and the datasets used. Especially, we detail CDXDB23, a new hidden dataset constructed from real movies that was used to rank the submissions. The paper also offers insights into the most successful approaches employed by participants. Compared to the cocktail-fork baseline, the best-performing system trained exclusively on the simulated Divide and Remaster (DnR) dataset achieved an improvement of 1.8 dB in SDR, whereas the top-performing system on the open leaderboard, where any data could be used for training, saw a significant improvement of 5.7 dB. A major source of this improvement was making the simulated data better match real cinematic audio, which we further investigate in detail.

Normative future visioning (NFV) offers a critical approach that can respond to the challenges of transformative adaptation. In the context of climate crisis, an understanding of the diversity of desired end-states and pathways for good urban futures is fundamental to fostering cooperation and inspiring purposeful action that can challenge and transform unsustainable processes and behaviours, and researching these processes. This paper contributes to transformative adaptation and climate resilient development by conceptualising NFV as a critical pedagogy. This framing understands NFV as a collective learning experience that can lead to emancipation and transformative action. A novel Encounter–Change Framework is proposed as a general mechanism for evaluating NFV methods. The framework is tested through the Tomorrow’s Cities project across its NFV deployment in nine cities: Quito, Istanbul, Nairobi, Kathmandu, Rapti, Nablus, Dar es Salaam, Cox’s Bazar and Chattogram. General lessons highlight the importance for NFV evaluation of analysing both methodological detail and its positioning within wider policy and planning processes. Detailed empirical findings reveal key lessons and challenges that emerge from practice – related to time, ethics, co-production, diversity, consensus, equity and authorship. These inform both NFV and other participatory experiences that aim at transformation. Policy relevance Transformative adaptation has proven difficult to implement in cities. It promises fundamental changes to socio-technological systems and in so doing raises concerns for future populations and generations, particularly those more vulnerable and equity-deprived. This paper puts forward a framework that offers one way beyond this impasse and supports practices that are future- and transformation-oriented: the Encounter–Change Framework. By drawing on key themes and insights from critical (urban) pedagogies (encounters, connections, emancipation and action and change), a way is proposed to evaluate practical NFV experiences. The Encounter–Change Framework is tested across nine cities. The results emphasise two lines of innovation for policy: a) unpacking the process of NFV from a perspective of power to increase its chances for impact and b) evaluating the positioning of NFV, both in relation to other future approaches and questions and as a part of wider adaptation policy and planning strategies.

Globally, cities and urban regions have initiated coastal adaptation planning to address increasing risk from sea level rise. However, there is growing awareness that sea level rise and other coastal flood risks will exacerbate existing social inequities if left unchecked. Planning scholars and practitioners have identified the importance of integrating an equity lens into their coastal adaptation planning, yet standards for defining and evaluating equity and justice in coastal adaptation planning have not been well outlined or applied. In response, more research is needed on tools for assessing processes and outcomes of equitable coastal adaptation planning. This paper asks: How are equity and justice being evaluated in urban coastal adaptation planning (UCAP)? The objectives are to: a) expand usages of equity and justice in UCAP and b) present a new framework for evaluating equity and justice within UCAP. The aim of the JustAdapt framework is to support UCAP scholars and practitioners in their pursuit of transformative urban adaptation, moving away from ‘checking the box’ on equity and toward just solutions. JustAdapt asks scholars and practitioners to disrupt dominant norms within the field and instead embrace reflexivity, accountability, and fluidity as they plan in relationship with the shifting tideline. Practice relevance Planning for sea level rise along urban shorelines presents an ever-changing challenge for urban coastal adaptation planning (UCAP) practitioners. Addressing equity and justice in UCAP adds another layer of complexity, as impacts from sea level rise will exacerbate historic and present inequities in coastal cities. This paper offers two main contributions: a) new understandings of equity and justice across five forms of justice – procedural, distributive, recognitional, intergenerational, and epistemic, and b) a new framework that can be used evaluate the degree to which equity and justice are integrated into a UCAP process. The JustAdapt framework supports practitioners to take actionable steps toward integrating equity and justice into their UCAP work, asking them to participate in the transition toward just urban adaptation.

This paper’s outcome of interest is an issue and policy alternative being placed on the legislative agenda; that is, the administration receives a legislative mandate with preliminary ideas for a subsequent draft law. While it is known that in Western European democracies, various political actors play together in the decision-making process preceding the drafting process (i.e., legislative agenda setting), it remains unclear what this interplay looks like. Empirically, the paper compares agenda-setting processes in Swiss politics by means of fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis. The main finding is that the administration and parliamentary committees negotiate regarding which issues shall be placed on the legislative agenda and which policy alternatives shall be considered for a future draft. This paper’s conclusion is that the government and its administration is far from being a gatekeeper for legislative projects and is particularly challenged by parliamentary committees. Résumé Cet article de recherche s’intéresse à la mise à l’agenda législatif d’un problème et d’une alternative politique, c’est-à-dire lorsque l’administration reçoit un mandat législatif avec des idées préliminaires pour un futur projet de loi. Bien que nous sachions que dans les démocraties d’Europe occidentale, divers acteurs politiques interviennent et collaborent dans le processus de prise de décision qui précède l’élaboration des lois (c’est-à-dire la fixation de l’agenda législatif), la nature exacte de cette interaction demeure peu claire. Sur le plan empirique, j’analyse les processus de définition de l’agenda politique en Suisse en utilisant une Analyse Comparative Qualitative Fuzzy-set (fsQCA). Ma principale conclusion est que l’administration et les comités parlementaires négocient les problèmes à inscrire à l’ordre du jour législatif ainsi que les solutions politiques à envisager pour les futurs projets de loi. De ce fait, je conclus que le gouvernement et son administration sont loin d’être les gardiens exclusifs des projets de loi, et qu’ils sont particulièrement mis à l’épreuve par les comités parlementaires. Zusammenfassung Das zu verstehende Phänomen dieser Studie ist die Festlegung der Gesetzgebungsagenda, d.h. dass die Verwaltung einen Gesetzgebungsauftrag mit vorläufigen Ideen für einen künftigen Gesetzesentwurf erhält. Es ist bekannt, dass in westeuropäischen Demokratien verschiedene politische Akteure im Entscheidungsprozess, der dem eigentlichen Gesetzgebungsprozess mit der Erstellung von Gesetzesentwürfen vorausgeht (d.h. Agenda-Setting), zusammenspielen. Es bleibt aber unklar, wie dieses Zusammenspiel aussieht. Empirisch gesehen vergleiche ich Agenda-Setting-Prozesse in der Schweizer Politik mittels einer qualitativ vergleichenden Fuzzy-Set-Analyse (fsQCA). Das Hauptergebnis ist, dass die Verwaltung und die parlamentarischen Kommissionen darüber verhandeln, welche Themen auf die Gesetzgebungsagenda gesetzt werden und welche Handlungsalternativen für eine künftige Gesetzesvorlage in Betracht gezogen werden sollen. Background: The High Institute of Public Health (HIPH), as a post-graduate academic institute, was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in several aspects. This paper describes the effect of COVID-19 on the three main domains of HIPH: research, education, and community services. Documenting the activities and practices of the HIPH during the pandemic reflects the degree of resilience and preparedness against possible future global emergencies. Despite its importance for policymakers, such data is lacking from similar institutes in the Middle East, including Egypt. Methods: An extensive search in four popular scientific databases (Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, and Scival) was conducted to extract publications by authors affiliated with the HIPH using relevant keywords. Records were reviewed to collect data on the educational process as well as data on community services (convoys, campaigns, seminars, and workshops held by HIPH staff). All the mentioned activities were described, analyzed and compared before and during the pandemic to study the impact of the pandemic on the HIPH, as an example of a postgraduate institute. Results: The total numbers of COVID-19-related publications in Scopus by authors affiliated with the HIPH were 115 publications, the majority of which were research articles in the ‘Medicine’ and ‘Immunology and Microbiology’ domains. Most of them focused on assessing the relationship between the pandemic and quality of life, and prevention and treatment of COVID-19 (22.2% each). Publications on COVID-19 by HIPH researchers during the pandemic constituted 33.1% (115 publications) of the total publications by Alexandria University. Among the top ten authors on COVID-19 at Alexandria University, four were HIPH affiliated. The year 2022 witnessed the most frequent publications on COVID-19 by HIPH (51/115 publications, 44.3% of all COVID-19 publications by the HIPH on Scopus). All program courses were taught online during the year 2019–2020 (343 courses). HIPH provided several community services during the pandemic, which included 16 convoys in the poorer areas of Alexandria that served more than 1250 beneficiaries. Their goals were raising health awareness on COVID-19 vaccination, health education, and environmental assessment. Implications for Policy & Practice: This paper is the first of its kind by members of the High Institute of Public Health, Alexandria University. It provides baseline data for future similar work and is a documentation of the compilation of efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic that gives baseline data for public health assessment and planning by policy makers.

This paper presents the specific process used by members of the Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Semantic Harmonization Cluster, to harmonize cryospheric terms gathered by the Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW) with two leading semantic resources used in the Earth and Environmental science communities—the Semantic Web for Earth and Environmental Terminology (SWEET) and the Environment Ontology (ENVO). This process led to updates to both ENVO and SWEET as well as the development of an alignment file relating cryospheric terms in ENVO to those in SWEET. In addition, we summarize several leading practices which may be applied to other projects/realms within Earth and Environmental science and perhaps beyond, as well as suggest a generalized process for doing so. This paper describes the history of the effort, the technical and decision-making processes used to resolve differences between semantic resources, and describes several issues encountered, with a focus on those that were addressed during the effort. Lessons learned, examples of the problems encountered and a summary of resulting leading practices growing out of this work is provided.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionally impacted people experiencing homelessness, including people sleeping rough, people in temporary accommodation and those living in boarding houses. This paper reports on intersectoral responses across six health and social care agencies in Inner Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Prior to the pandemic the six agencies had established an Intersectoral Homelessness Health Strategy (IHHS), in recognition of the need for intersectoral collaboration to address the complex health needs of people experiencing homelessness. Description: The governance structure of the IHHS provided a platform for several innovative intersectoral responses to the pandemic. A realist informed framework was used to select, describe, and analyse case studies of intersectoral collaboration. Discussion: The resultant six critical success factors (trust, shared ways of working, agile collaboration, communication mechanisms, authorising environment, and sustained momentum), align with the existing literature that explores effective intersectoral collaboration in complex health or social care settings. This paper goes further by describing intersectoral collaboration ‘in action’, setting a strong foundation for future collaborative initiatives. Conclusion: While there is no single right approach to undertaking intersectoral collaboration, which is highly context specific, the six critical success factors identified could be applied to other health issues where dynamic collaboration and integration of healthcare is needed.

In this practice-based pedagogical paper, we, the university faculty of Education, Food and Nutrition, Sociology, and History in the U.S., describe how we started a Reflective Practice Teaching Circle at our institution for interdisciplinary dialogue about the effective use of social media (SM) for teaching and learning. Our discussions led to the design of the Social Media Entry Model that educators can use for decision-making. We begin this paper with a brief synthesis of scholarly literature describing students’ SM use and how higher education faculty use SM to support 21st-century skills development. Next, we describe the institutional, individual, and pedagogical barriers that prevent faculty from embracing SM as a teaching and learning tool. Based on our shared vision and praxis, we present the Social Media Entry Model and describe how educators can use it when deciding how to integrate SM into the formal or informal curriculum. Through our narratives, we illustrate how we use a variety of SM platforms and different entry points in the model to enhance students’ 21st-century skills. We also discuss the legal and ethical issues that educators must consider to ensure that university students use SM in a socially responsible manner.

We explore in this paper the impulse to share our academic work via social media as well as the impact this sharing has on our senses of self as scholars and persons. We argue that this sharing raises a number of important philosophical questions: In what way does the branding or profiling encouraged by X/Twitter impact on our personal identity? How does the publicness of this particular platform disrupt the intimacy that lies at the heart of all edifying human relationship? And to invoke the terms of critical theorist, Axel Honneth, can we as teachers and researchers recognize ourselves in the social media sphere? Writing from the perspective of philosophy of education, Conroy and Smith (2017: 706) have argued that the contemporary university has been taken over by ‘Professor Lookatme’ and ‘Dr Loudmouth’ – but we are interested in the extent to which these caricatured figures are necessarily representative of today’s academy. While our paper draws attention to the dark side of social media, then, it still explores the possibilities for authentic selfhood as well as meaningful community in our increasingly digitized academic worlds.

The Special Collection Data Management Planning across Disciplines and Infrastructures of the Data Science Journal consists of papers describing practical experiences, concepts, and future directions on the design and deployment of effective data management plans and associated tools. Papers contain practical examples on managing and sharing data, consider the integration of data management plans into infrastructures and reflect innovative research into new directions for disciplinary and cross-disciplinary data management planning.

Data citation promotes accessibility and discoverability of data through measures carried out by researchers, publishers, repositories, and the scientific community. This paper examines how a data citation workflow has been implemented by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) by evaluating publication and data linkages. Two different methods were used to identify data citations: examining publication structural metadata and examining the full text of the publication. A growing number of USGS researchers are complying with publisher data sharing policies aimed to capture data citation information in a standardized way within associated publications. However, inconsistencies in how data citation information is documented in publications has limited the accessibility and discoverability of the data. This paper demonstrates how organizational evaluations of publication and data linkages can be used to identify obstacles in advancing data citation efforts and improve data citation workflows.

The special collection “Data for Psychological Research on COVID-19” presents selected datasets collected during the COVID-19 pandemic. In selecting the data papers, care was taken to ensure that the described datasets not only represent the full range of psychological topics addressed during the pandemic but also reflect its global nature, in that diverse nationalities were included in the investigated samples. As these datasets are shared according to the FAIR Principles (Wilkinson et al., 2016), they are findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable. The special collection comprises 12 data papers presenting quantitative studies on the impact of COVID-19 on various psychological constructs, including socio-political attitudes, beliefs in conspiracy theories, emotional reactions, and control behaviour.

The open research movement has gained momentum in the last decade and no academic can ignore the necessity to make research more open, as it improves reliability, sustainability and reusability of data. In this paper, we present the results of a community-based survey concerning the extent to which open practices are known and applied within the phytolith research community. The survey covered aspects of research including the use of open source/access software and the open publication of data and papers. The answers of 81 participants show that ≥50% use open source/access software in their research, 40.7% know or use open repositories (not necessarily DOI-based), and 37% and 60.5% are predisposed to or have published gold open access and green open access/preprints, respectively. Among respondents with publications (n = 71), 49.3% stated that all their publications included full method descriptions and 53.5% expressed that ≥60% of their publications contained raw data. Overall, the results of the survey indicate that, albeit some misunderstandings about open research are still present, phytolith researchers are positive towards open research and intend to adopt its principles and practices.

This paper examines different methods of predicting bibliographical details (e.g. author, title, and publisher) of books under review in a corpus of approximately 1,100 historical book reviews. The dataset is comprised of book reviews from ProQuest’s American Periodicals Series (APS). This kind of bibliographical profiling is often characterized as a Natural Language Processing (NLP) or Named Entity Recognition (NER) task, but it can be more specifically described as a two-part Named Entity Linking (NEL) task, beginning with a feature extraction stage followed by one of several available matching or classification methods. An attempt has been made to formalize constraints for modular bibliographical profiling (MBP) and shed light on some important choices that are often glossed over or obscured by digital humanities practitioners. Applying these constraints, the paper evaluates combinations of feature selection (naive bag-of-words [BOW], rule-based feature extraction, and NER using a pre-trained model) with a standardized similarity-based matching strategy (cosine similarity). All tasks are performed on derived text data (term frequency tables), so that data can be shared and all methods can be used on materials available only in non-consumptive formats. These comparisons suggest that naive BOW can perform quite robustly, and that using even a basic pre-trained NER model in conjunction with a BOW approach may reduce false positives.

With its implementation of Tendermint consensus and the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol, Cosmos stands out in facilitating seamless cross-blockchain interactions. The ATOM token serves a dual role as the network’s currency and a governance tool, empowering stakeholders in decision-making processes. Significantly, this study investigates the intricate relationship between Cosmos and social media platforms, examining how online sentiment influences voting on governance proposals, with a detailed analysis of two specific proposals. Furthermore, the paper delves into Cosmos’ integral role in the burgeoning Decentralized Finance sector, underscoring how its modular architecture fosters financial innovation. In the broader context, there are numerous PoS (Proof of Stake) networks. Cosmos, one of the foundational and longstanding projects, exemplifies a classic blockchain economic model, making it an ideal subject for this analysis. Finally, the paper assesses Cosmos’ contribution to the overarching Web3 vision, asserting its significance as a foundational element for a decentralized, user-oriented digital framework. Introduction: Social Prescribing has an established recognition regarding the benefits provided to the health-related social needs of adults, but little is known about how the intervention addresses young people’s needs. There is optimism regarding the central role of two core mechanisms that allows social prescribing to be effective, such as the empathetic role of Link Workers and the connection with community resources. This paper aims to describe the role played by Link Workers working a Social Prescribing intervention targeting young people. Description: This paper adopts a case study methodology to describe the role of Link Workers addressing young people’s needs and implementing Social Prescribing scheme in Sheffield (UK). Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with four of the seven link workers of one organisation based in Sheffield. Data were analysed through an inductive approach for emerging themes. Discussion: We provided a description of the profiles and background of Link Workers and described the three models of referral pathways into the intervention. The paper also shows how Link Workers identify young people’s needs and how they connect with the community. Conclusion: Based on the insights and the internationally accepted definition of Social Prescribing, we provide a visual representation of the Social Prescribing model and discuss challenges. The paper highlights lessons learned and future directions regarding the role of Link Workers from the case study.

This paper provides an overview of workflows in the Social Sciences and Humanities Open Marketplace discovery portal. Workflows are defined as step-by-step research scenarios pointing to resources that can be used at each stage for someone to reproduce these scenarios. Born as TEI objects in the Standardization Survival Kit, a mapping exercise was needed to transfer them into the SSH Open Marketplace and ensure their legacy. Dedicated forms are now available to create and edit workflows which provide an easy to use interface for researchers to be autonomous in the creation and design of their workflows. This paper reviews the history, the technical, and community dimensions needed to describe research workflows in the Social Sciences and Humanities. It also describes the challenges faced and the new developments envisioned so that these workflows can better reflect and serve SSH researchers.

Data sharing is crucial for strengthening research integrity and outcomes and for addressing complex problems. In cybersecurity research, data sharing can enable the development of new security measures, prediction of malicious attacks, and increased privacy. Understanding the landscape of data sharing and use in cybersecurity research can help to improve both the existing practices of data management and use and the outcomes of cybersecurity research. To this end, this study used methods of qualitative analysis and descriptive statistics to analyze 171 papers published between 2015 and 2019, their authors’ characteristics, such as gender and professional title, and datasets’ attributes, including their origin and public availability. The study found that more than half of the datasets in the sample (58%) and an even larger percentage of code in the papers (89%) were not publicly available. By offering an updated in-depth perspective on data practices in cybersecurity, including the role of authors, research methods, data sharing, and code availability, this study calls for the improvement of data management in cybersecurity research and for further collaboration in addressing the issues of cyberinfrastructure, policies, and citation and attribution standards in order to advance the quality and availability of data in this field.

In this paper, a framework and a system architecture are presented to support researchers in DMP creation and execution, with a focus on the generation of FAIR data. Using the research data lifecycle within Photon and Neutron analytical facilities as a detailed exemplar of this approach in practice, it shows how combining the creation of the DMP with the project management framework PMBOK makes it easier to integrate DMP creation within the researchers’ workflow and reuse pre-existing information within the research infrastructure and related project roles. The paper identifies requirements and introduces a lifecycle for pre-existing information that helps in automatic population of the DMP. This paper also discusses a data model for the reuse of pre-existing information. It shows possible approaches to support scientists through the (semi-)automation of the creation, execution, and use of a DMP and knowledge transfer. The approach is based on work within the PaNData ODI, ExPaNDS, and PaNOSC projects.

Background: Secondary prevention lifestyle and pharmacological treatment of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) reduce a high proportion of recurrent events and mortality. However, significant gaps exist between guideline recommendations and usual clinical practice. Objectives: Describe the state of the art, the roadblocks, and successful strategies to overcome them in ASCVD secondary prevention management. Methods: A writing group reviewed guidelines and research papers and received inputs from an international committee composed of cardiovascular prevention and health systems experts about the article’s structure, content, and draft. Finally, an external expert group reviewed the paper. Results: Smoking cessation, physical activity, diet and weight management, antiplatelets, statins, beta-blockers, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors, and cardiac rehabilitation reduce events and mortality. Potential roadblocks may occur at the individual, healthcare provider, and health system levels and include lack of access to healthcare and medicines, clinical inertia, lack of primary care infrastructure or built environments that support preventive cardiovascular health behaviours. Possible solutions include improving health literacy, self-management strategies, national policies to improve lifestyle and access to secondary prevention medication (including fix-dose combination therapy), implementing rehabilitation programs, and incorporating digital health interventions. Digital tools are being examined in a range of settings from enhancing self-management, risk factor control, and cardiac rehab. Conclusions: Effective strategies for secondary prevention management exist, but there are barriers to their implementation. WHF roadmaps can facilitate the development of a strategic plan to identify and implement local and national level approaches for improving secondary prevention.

Hearing the remote past seems impossible. Archaeoacoustics is a contemporary field intent on reconstructing the evolution of early communication systems, offering the possibility of developing methodologies relating to past sound signaling and music. Through a contribution of the emerging sensory field of archaeoacoustics and an example of acoustic assessments conducted at the site of Coves del Toll, can we understand signals of the past in order to investigate human behaviour and trace its cognitive evolution? This paper explores alternative methodological and theoretical approaches to understanding prehistoric sonic behaviours in early hominids and aims to set out a framework to theoretically and philosophically approach the “sound record” of the past. The theoretical proposition of this paper integrates the musical and sound art disciplines of spectralism and sound ecology to challenge the current limitations of listening to sound.

This paper presents how we enhanced the accessibility and utility of historical linguistic data in the project Bullinger Digital. The project involved the transformation of 3,100 letters, primarily available as scanned PDFs, into a dynamic, fully digital format. The expanded digital collection now includes 12,000 letters, 3,100 edited, 5,400 transcribed, and 3,500 represented through detailed metadata and results from handwritten text recognition. Central to our discussion is the innovative workflow developed for this multilingual corpus. This includes strategies for text normalisation, machine translation, and handwritten text recognition, particularly focusing on the challenges of code-switching within historical documents. The resulting digital platform features an advanced search system, offering users various filtering options such as correspondent names, time periods, languages, and locations. It also incorporates fuzzy and exact search capabilities, with the ability to focus searches within specific text parts, like summaries or footnotes. Beyond detailing the technical process, this paper underscores the project’s contribution to historical research and digital humanities. While the Bullinger Digital platform serves as a model for similar projects, the corpus behind it demonstrates the vast potential for data reuse in historical linguistics. The project exemplifies how digital humanities methodologies can revitalise historical text collections, offering researchers access to and interaction with historical data. This paper aims to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of our project’s scope and broader implications for the field of digital humanities, highlighting the transformative potential of such digital endeavours in historical linguistic research.

This paper arises from a research-based teaching project (“Die Biographie eines Heiligtums. Computergestützte Visualisierung und Analyse mit georeferenzierten Datenmodellen”), held during the summer term 2019 at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. Based on a case study focussing on the area of Sounion and the Laureotike, with the authors, aided by a group of students, developed a data structure concept for the critical analysis of ancient sanctuaries that takes into account their landscape setting, cults and worshipped deities, as well as ancient worshippers. In order to facilitate the evaluation of large amounts of data sets, a preliminary GIS-based graph database was established and first data sets were entered. The paper presented here outlines the data structure as well as the configuration of the provisional tool and aims to illustrate how our understanding Greek religion is improved by large and highly diverse data sets.

This paper presents a comprehensive dataset comprising annotations generated by the Google Vision API for approximately 105,000 frames extracted from 15 Alfred Hitchcock films. These annotations include information about object detection, facial recognition, web-entity analysis, and explicit content filtering. With potential applications in the digital humanities and film studies, this dataset enables researchers to not only explore and evaluate cinematic content but also the ways that it resurfaces in various cultural contexts online. The paper provides a detailed account of the dataset creation process, which involved the decryption of the DVD, frame extraction, and costs of annotations. Additionally, the paper outlines future research possibilities based on the dataset. These include statistical analysis of frame content and labels to identify patterns and trends, comparisons of different computer vision algorithms to assess their accuracy and effectiveness, and the utilization of bipartite networks to explore mise-en-scene in films.

This paper offers a detailed overview of the archeological data from the “Roman Rural Landscapes in Noricum” (RRLN) project. It focuses on the less-explored northern and northeastern rural regions of Roman-period Noricum (c. 16/15 BC to 488 AD). The University of Vienna’s PHAIDRA system was employed for the long-term archiving of selected new archeological data, adhering to the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles. The project adopted an innovative digital archeology approach, combining open geodata with various unstructured datasets within a Geographic Information System (GIS) framework. Accordingly, this method aimed to deepen our understanding of Roman rural landscapes in a specific Area of Interest (AoI). The paper highlights the selective preservation of crucial archeological data in a specialized repository and also promotes open science to improve the discoverability and usability of data related to Roman-period objects.

Growing global concern about how to dispose of wind turbine blades has sparked an investigation into more sustainable alternatives. This research delves into finding eco-friendly solutions for managing the waste generated by wind turbine blades, specifically by exploring options for repurposing them. To put this into action, this study has focused on a New Zealand wind farm with 196 wind turbine blades at the end of its life cycle. Through a thorough review of documents, 60 potential ways were identified to repurposing these blades. Options falling under the downcycling category were excluded, thus narrowing down to 45 promising solutions to repurpose. Futher 7 practically applied global solutions are identified. Implementing these repurposing solutions would divert 331 tonnes of waste material from landfills from the New Zealand Wind Farm. This study is significant because it highlights the potential for a circular and sustainable approach and provides an example of how wind turbine blade waste can be diverted from landfill. The findings of this study contribute to practical insights and support initiatives across New Zealand to encourage the adoption of wind turbine blade repurposing. In hot regions, high street temperatures can be a significant impediment for pedestrians. It can also negatively impact the urban heat island and increase the energy required for cooling. Street shading can assist in mitigating these problems. This research examines the effect of extended building projections beyond the building plot and over the pavement on street shading and the resultant thermal conditions in a hot, arid urban environment employing the ENVI-met simulation tool. Several projection configurations were analyzed in a Dubai mid-rise residential district. Projections extended beyond the real estate plot boundaries but not the walking pavement, to a maximum of 6 m. Two streets were analyzed within the selected neighborhood: a side street 10 m wide, building-to-building, and a main street 56 m wide. The simulations showed a direct correlation between configurations of larger building projections with improvements in outdoor air temperature, both ambient and radiant, and thermal comfort. The average temperature for the entire block dropped almost two degrees from 41.0 C° to 39.1 C°. Significantly, the radiant temperature decreased significantly from 63 C° to 57 C°. The PMV, according to Envi-met's scale, remained out of the comfort zone but still showed a significant improvement from 7.2 to 6.5. These results demonstrate that well-designed building projections can effectively reduce high temperatures, improve livability, and assist in mitigating the urban heat island effect of mid-rise urban sectors in hot regions.
