In this paper, we explore the use of seismicity data on a single-station basis in site response characterization. We train a supervised deep-learning model, SeismAmp, to recognize and separate seismic site response with reference to seismological bedrock (VS  = 3.45 km s−1) in a broad frequency range (0.2–20 Hz) directly from single-station earthquake recordings (features) in Japan. Ground-truth data are homogeneously created using a classical multistation approach—generalized spectral inversion at a total number of 1725 sites. We demonstrate that site response can be reliably separated from single-station seismograms in an end-to-end approach. When SeismAmp is tested at new sites in both Japan (in-domain) and Europe (cross-domain), it achieves the lowest standard deviation among all tested single-station techniques. We also find that horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) is not the optimal use of single-station recordings. The individual components of each record carry salient information on site response, especially at high frequencies. However, part of the information is lost in HVSR. SeismAmp could lead to improved site-specific earthquake hazard prediction in cases where recordings are available or can be collected at target sites. It is also a convenient tool to remove repeatable site effects from ground motions, which may benefit other applications, for example, improving the retrieval of seismic source parameters. This paper explores the case of a migrant-owned apartment in Japan that has been rented to migrants for over a decade. The apartment, located in the "house with the red roof," and people's relations that develop within and around it are approached through the anthropological concept of "societies with houses." The apartment is regarded not only as a dwelling but as an institution that governs relations in a loosely tied migrant society with houses. The study contributes both to migrant housing studies, offering an experimental perspective that goes beyond inquiries into migrant spatial distributions and notions of home, and to the "societies with houses" concept through expanding its toolkit and application. The apartment in question not only provides a place to live for migrants but also enacts the functions of protection, capital accumulation, social memory reproduction, disguise and exposure, and metaphorical kinning. Since 1965, Japan has issued numerous apologies to Korea, which however failed to resonate with the Korean public. To investigate this puzzle, this paper analyses the structure of these apologies and empirically examines their reception in Korea. Blatz et al.'s (Political Psychology, 2009, 30, 219) classification of components of political apologies was applied to conduct a qualitative analysis of 63 official apology statements by Japan to Korea and identify the most frequently used components (Study 1). Korean participants (N = 210) were randomly presented with an experimental vignette consisting of a major apology component to examine their psychological responses, and they also ranked the importance of each major apology component (Study 2). Results showed that while Koreans viewed admission of wrongdoing as an essential and the most demanded component of apology, it was paradoxically the least frequent component offered by Japan in reality. The cooling performance of the machine with the closed liquid cooling system is excellent. However, the electromagnetic characteristics of the oil separator which sealing the cooling oil in the stator side can have a significant impact on the performance of the machine. In this paper, a liquid cooling structure with the magnetic oil separator is proposed. Taking the 20 000 rpm high‐speed permanent magnet generator as an example, the influence of the electromagnetic parameters of the magnetic oil separator on the generator output performance is studied by the analytical calculation and the finite element method, and the mechanism of the nonlinear variation of the generator output performance with the permeability of the oil separator is obtained. The influence of the oil separator on the air‐gap magnetic field and electromagnetic force is analyzed, and the reduction mechanism of the different permeability of the oil separator on the harmonic magnetic field and radial force is revealed. The vibration acceleration response of the generator stator is obtained through the modal and harmonic response analysis, it is confirmed that the magnetic oil separator has the effect of reducing vibration. In addition, the 3‐D temperature field calculation model of the generator is established, the influence of the thermal parameters of the oil separator on the internal heat exchange of the generator is studied, and the temperature distribution is obtained. Finally, experiments on the electromagnetic performance and temperature rise of the prototype are carried out to verify the correctness of the theoretical analysis. © 2023 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. A nonlinear filter is presented by using a formal linearization method and the extended Kalman filter (EKF) approach in this paper. A given nonlinear system is transformed into an augmented nonlinear system by considering the higher‐order polynomial terms of state as new additional states. This paper deduces the quantitative relationship between the flux vectors and the power of power winding (PW) in brushless doubly‐fed reluctance generator (BDFRG). On this basis, the direct power control (DPC) theory of BDFRG is established, which makes up the deficiency that the DPC theory of BDFRG is only based on qualitative analysis in the existing literature. The power derivative expression is derived for accurately analyzing the effect of voltage vector of control winding (CW) on the power of PW, concluding that the control effect of DPC is related to the operation point of a BDFRG. The number of basic voltage vectors of CW connected with two‐level converter is limited, resulting that under some operation conditions, a BDFRG controlled by DPC could present a time interval where the power cannot be controlled satisfactorily. Therefore, the space vector modulation‐based direct power control (SVM‐DPC) strategy of BDFRG is proposed, which can solve the above problem and fix the switching frequency. A calculation model of radial electromagnetic force wave for permanent magnet assisted reluctance motor (PMaSynRM) with rotor slots is proposed in this paper. By introducing complex air gap relative permeance, the improved magnetic potential permeability method is applied to the calculation of electromagnetic force wave of the PMaSynRM. Considering the influence of both stator and rotor slots, the characteristics of electromagnetic force wave are analyzed theoretically. A multi‐physical coupling model of PMaSynRM is established. The natural frequency of the stator core is obtained by modal finite element analysis and modal hammer experiment. The harmonic response is analyzed by loading electromagnetic force wave into the structure field and the vibration on the housing surface is calculated. The results show that although the amplitude of electromagnetic force is small at zero‐order slot frequency, the vibration caused by electromagnetic force at frequency of stator slots and rotor slots, especially at the rotor slot frequency, is the biggest vibration source. Because the magnetic circuits of homopolar inductor machines (HIMs) are three‐dimensional (3‐D), a 3‐D finite element model (FEM) is usually built to accurately compute the cogging torque in HIMs, but the drawback is very time‐consuming in modeling and computing. Therefore, a two‐dimensional (2‐D) FEM of HIMs is needed to simplify the computation of the 3‐D FEM. However, the existing odd harmonic 2‐D FEM cannot accurately predict the cogging torque in HIMs. To address this problem, this paper proposes a full‐order harmonic 2‐D FEM. First, the analytical expressions of HIM cogging torque are derived by the combination of energy method and air‐gap field modulation principle. Based on the obtained analytical expressions, the equivalent principles between the 3‐D and 2‐D FEMs are analyzed. According to the above equivalent principles and taking a 48‐slot/4‐tooth (48S4T) permanent magnet (PM) HIM as an example, a full‐order harmonic 2‐D FEM of the example machine excited by a field winding is proposed. The structure of the full‐order harmonic 2‐D FEM is described in detail. The turn number of field winding and field current amplitude of the proposed 2‐D FEM are investigated. The differences between the odd harmonic 2‐D and full‐order harmonic 2‐D FEMs are also analyzed. Finally, the cogging torque in the 48S4T PM HIM with distinct rotor tooth‐arc to tooth‐pitch ratios is computed by 3‐D, odd harmonic 2‐D and full‐order harmonic 2‐D FEMs of the machine, respectively. The results illustrate that compared with the odd harmonic 2‐D FEM, the full‐order harmonic 2‐D FEM can shorten the calculation time and has the similar computation accuracy as the 3‐D FEM. Moreover, the experimental validation is performed on a prototype of the 48S4T PM HIM. With the continuous development of intelligent refrigerators, users are having higher and higher requirements for smart management of refrigerator contents. When using traditional machine learning algorithms to deal with refrigerator ingredients classification, problems such as slow recognition speed and low accuracy would often arise. At the same time, the classification accuracy is easily affected by the location of the content. Therefore, this paper uses continuous asymmetric convolutions and depthwise separable convolutions to improve the original Inception model and builds a classification prediction network based on the improved Inception model. The steps to applying the said model is as follows: First, we put the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag on the food in the refrigerator, and then we collect the antenna data RSSI received by each tag through the reader. Finally, the RSSI is preprocessed and entered into the classification network to determine the location of the label. The proposed classification network has the advantages of possessing a simple structure, easy expansion of network depth, and fewer training parameters. The experimental results show that compared with other machine learning algorithms and pure convolution networks, the lightweight network model based on the improved Inception structure demonstrates great superiority. Compared with the original Inception structure, the enhanced network model is more lightweight. The number of parameters is reduced by 50%, and the amount of float‐point operations is reduced by 34%. Meanwhile, the accuracy of the lightweight model has been improved by 0.6%. Brushless doubly‐fed air‐core pulse alternator (BDAPA) is a new type of pulse alternator. It does not need a brush and slip ring, improving the reliability of the system. Moreover, the field winding and rotor winding have good compensation effect, which can significantly improve the discharge performance of the pulse alternator. As a high‐power pulse power supply, BDAPA must have a set of corresponding excitation power supplies to control its excitation. Pulse alternator and excitation power supply constitute the pulse alternator power supply system. The excitation power supply of pulse alternator usually adopts a pulse capacitor, the field winding of pulse alternator is excited by the pre‐charged capacitor before the pulse alternator discharges the load. After discharging, the excitation capacitor must be charged again before the next work of pulse alternator. This requires an additional set of DC power supply to charge the excitation capacitor. It not only increases the volume of the whole system and reduces the energy storage density of the system, but also makes the control of the system more complex. Taking the BDAPA as the research object, this paper proposes a control method with energy feedback, which is combining self‐excitation and separate excitation. Using the inertial energy storage of the pulse alternator and the inductive energy storage of the field winding and rotor winding, the excitation capacitor can be recharged through proper control methods, which can save the DC excitation power supply and improve the energy storage density of the system. © 2023 Institute of Electrical Engineer of Japan and Wiley Periodicals LLC. Background: The Targeted Learning roadmap provides a systematic guide for generating and evaluating real-world evidence (RWE). From a regulatory perspective, RWE arises from diverse sources such as randomized controlled trials that make use of real-world data, observational studies, and other study designs. This paper illustrates a principled approach to assessing the validity and interpretability of RWE. Methods: We applied the roadmap to a published observational study of the dose–response association between ritodrine hydrochloride and pulmonary edema among women pregnant with twins in Japan. The goal was to identify barriers to causal effect estimation beyond unmeasured confounding reported by the study's authors, and to explore potential options for overcoming the barriers that robustify results. Results: Following the roadmap raised issues that led us to formulate alternative causal questions that produced more reliable, interpretable RWE. The process revealed a lack of information in the available data to identify a causal dose–response curve. However, under explicit assumptions the effect of treatment with any amount of ritodrine versus none, albeit a less ambitious parameter, can be estimated from data. Conclusions: Before RWE can be used in support of clinical and regulatory decision-making, its quality and reliability must be systematically evaluated. The TL roadmap prescribes how to carry out a thorough, transparent, and realistic assessment of RWE. We recommend this approach be a routine part of any decision-making process. Electropalatography (EPG) has been used in the past 50 years for studying the patterns of contact between the tongue and the palate during speech production in typical speakers and those with speech disorders due to different causes. At the 7th EPG Symposium in Japan that was held online on 24 January 2021 (see: ), a panel of invited experts discussed their views regarding further developments and application of the technique. This paper provides a summary of this discussion. EPG offers information on articulation which cannot be replaced by other instrumental measures of speech. Identified areas for further hardware development are thinner EPG plates, better dental and palatal coverage, wireless connectivity, and sensors that provide additional articulatory information (e.g. tongue pressure, tongue-palate distance). EPG can serve as a resource for teaching speech disorders and phonetics. Furthermore, EPG therapy can be combined with telepractice in the speech therapy of clients with speech disorders. This study proposed a probabilistic generic transformation model between two rock mass properties, specific fracture energy, Ev, and P-wave velocity, VP. To build the transformation model, 12 pairwise data sets of Ev and VP were collected from six different construction sites involving construction of mountain tunnels in Japan. This database is labeled as "RockMass/2/350". A probabilistic transformation model was built based on a bivariate standard normal distribution with these 350 data points. The model is generic, because it is based on a variety of sites. The performance of the constructed transformation model was evaluated through a cross-validation. It was found that 98.2% of the validation data fell within the computed 95% confidence interval of the model estimation, and this result provides a preliminary validation of the probabilistic transformation model. Unlike existing deterministic transformation models for estimating VP from Ev, the proposed model can explicitly evaluate the transformation uncertainty with a quantitative metric such as a percentile. For practical application, a 3D model of the spatial distribution for Young's modulus, E, was visualized based on the proposed transformation model. Since the proposed model is probabilistic, it can provide the spatial distribution for percentiles of E values. The constructed 3D model presented in this paper can be directly used as an input data for finite element or finite difference analysis, and probabilistic evaluation of excavation simulation is feasible based on the proposed probabilistic model. The high‐temperature electric‐actuated valve widely adopts the split structure, and the valve stem drives the opening and closing of the valve after passing through the high‐temperature packing and sealing structure. However, the transmission chain is too long, which cannot meet the pursuit of small volume and lightweight in the nuclear industry. In this paper, a novel integrated structure of high‐temperature direct drive electric‐actuated valve canned permanent magnet synchronous motor (DDEAV‐CPMSM) is proposed. The structure omits the dynamic sealing structure composed of stuffing box, pressure plate and pressure sleeve, as well as the transmission structure of gears and couplings, and the reliability is significantly improved. This paper focuses on the calculation of the dimension parameters, thermal load design, and electromagnetic vibration of DDEAV‐CPMSM, and compares it with the integrated structure of the induction motor to explore the optimal topology of the high‐temperature electric‐actuated valve. Aiming at the problem of serious heat generation in limited space, it is difficult to simulate the running time of high‐temperature valve. Based on the magneto‐thermal coupling method, a 3D temperature field model considering high‐temperature heat source, canned sleeve eddy current loss, and hydraulic friction loss is established. The steady‐state temperature distribution of the system at high temperature and the transient temperature change law of valve opening and closing are analyzed, and the minimum time of secondary start‐up and the maximum running time under fault conditions are further studied, to provide a theoretical basis for the application of DDEAV‐CPMSM. © 2022 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. This paper describes the state of the art of structural steel reuse in Japan. A significant part of the material is taken from a document titled the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) Recommendations for Sustainable Steel Building Construction (Draft) available only in the Japanese language. The motivations for and potential benefits of steel reuse are examined. The affinity between seismic design requirements and steel reuse is highlighted through a concept known as "damage-control" design. Some technologies for disassembly are introduced. The historical development and changes in Japanese structural steel are summarized, followed by a discussion on reusability of historical steel reclaimed from existing buildings. Reuse projects whose details are known to the authors are listed. The heart of the paper is a design procedure that specifies the structural engineer's role and involvement in planning, material procurement, and executing a steel reuse project. The discussion is concluded by six directions that should be pursued to make steel reuse a widely accepted reality in Japan. Among those directions are research needs to establish a procedure to quantify the remaining structural performance of reclaimed steel considering possible exposure to earthquakes, establish connections that allow for easy disassembly, and introduce modularized structural systems. Optical model or coupled-channels calculation serves as an entrance to sophisticated calculation of nuclear data. It gives the optical quantities such as total, shape elastic scattering, absorption cross sections, direct inelastic scattering cross sections, angular distributions of elastic and inelastic scattering, and transmission coefficients for subsequent statistical model calculations. Traditionally, coupling of the elastic scattering channel to excited states of the target nucleus was ignored or treated with a simplified model such as rigid rotor or harmonic oscillator. It was a great contribution of Dr. Efrem Sh. Soukhovitsukii who has developed an excellent computation scheme which takes account of the low-lying collective nuclear structure in terms of the soft-rotator + vibrational model, and integrated it into the coupled-channels calculation. This methodology was realized as 2 computer codes, SHEMMAN and OPTMAN. In Japan, we had a fortuitous experience with him to employ this methodology in nuclear data evaluation, which started as a nuclear physics work to analyze neutron-scattering cross section of 12 C which were published as a series of 3 papers in Nuclear Physics A journal. After recognizing the usefulness of this methodology, it was applied to evaluation of nuclear data gradually and extensively, which resulted in obtaining awards of Atomic Energy Society of Japan (AESJ) by one of the authors (SK). This paper presents tools that help researchers implement the processes of data-led studies of upper-atmospheric phenomena. These tools were developed as a part of the activities of the Inter-university Upper atmosphere Global Observation NETwork (IUGONET) of Japan, which is a project to develop infrastructure for upper-atmospheric research data. This paper focuses on the data service named IUGONET Type-A, which was launched in October 2016 and has since evolved. In addition to being a conventional metadata catalogue, it has many other useful functions: an easy cross-searching system, a quick-look data-plotting procedure, an interactive data visualization system named UDAS web, and strong linkage with analysis software. Users can pick up relevant data from a huge number of data sets using either lists categorized by instruments/projects, observed regions and special campaigns or a world map of observatories. Users can quickly find the time, location and nature of phenomena that occurred by comparing the quick-look plots of various data displayed by the browser. UDAS web allows researchers to interactively create stacked plots of various data types that can facilitate the understanding of the relationships among phenomena observed in different regions. Furthermore, it presents a command list for software dedicated to data analysis that can smoothly lead users to perform detailed analyses. IUGONET Type-A provides a one-stop data service that can assist users in searching, examining and comprehending data for advanced analysis. It is also capable of handling old data, including analogue data and written paper documents. We aimed to survey the findings of phenomenological studies built up in the field of diabetes care in Sweden. This is a meta-synthesis of phenomenological studies on experiences related to diabetes in Sweden focusing on learning to live with diabetes. We proceeded by reference to the seven phases of Noblit & Hare. We examined papers from seven phenomenological studies on learning to live with diabetes in Sweden. From the papers, which describe the experience of living with diabetes, three overarching themes were selected—perception and awareness of the body; integration and responsibility; and presence of others who provide support. From those describing the expert's experience, an overarching theme emerged—encouraging reflection in persons with diabetes. We interpreted each of these themes in phenomenological terms and compared them with theories in Japan. Persons with diabetes take responsibility for coping with a range of things brought on by the illness and learn to live with diabetes. Experts support these persons so they can see their world objectively and critically scrutinize it. By building a model of diabetes care in Japan that references Scandinavian human science, it will be possible to find new approaches that support learning at the existential level. The first news about Japan in the Ottoman press was published in the Ceride-i Havadis in 1841. After the end of the isolation, information about Japan began to reach out to westerners. This article is based on the question "What information was there about the Japanese in Ottoman journals?" that aims to answer the question "How were Ottoman journals the reflection of the Japanese making great achievements with the Meiji restorations?" For this purpose, the date range of the study has been determined as the Meiji Period (1868-1912). Articles about Japan and Japanese people from journals published during the Ottoman period were scanned. In the first stage of the composition process of the article, secondary sources that may be relevant to our subject were scanned. In the second stage, we scanned journals and listed articles about Japan from the scanned journals. In the third step, the listed articles were read in detail and categorized to determine the subject headings. Considering the number of papers, similar papers or papers with short information were excluded from the study during the screening process. In our research, articles on various subjects were found in the journals Sırât-ı Müstakîm, Musavver Muhit, Mecmûa-i Fünûn, Maârif, Ma'lûmât, İctihad, Servet-i Funun, Şehbal, and Mecmûa-i Ebüzziyâ. Public transport providers often attempt to prevent passenger behaviour they consider dangerous, deviant, or otherwise undesirable through media technologies such as posters, signage, and overhead announcements. This paper explores the rationale of such mediated regulatory endeavours by taking up the example of 'manner improvement' poster campaigns by urban rail providers in Tokyo. Based on expert interviews with individuals involved in the production of poster campaigns and analysis of industry documents, it examines the motives and considerations guiding company interventions into passengers' everyday mobility practices. While previous scholarship has largely viewed such initiatives as a form of social control, this paper interprets manner improvement efforts as a customer service strategy. The paper examines posters' content, design, and limitations to argue that manner improvement efforts by urban transport providers are not primarily concerned with disciplining passengers but satisfying customer sensibilities. Enquiring into transit etiquette posters from the perspective of transport and design companies involved in creating them, this paper presents a novel contribution to the study of urban mobilities. Background: No study has investigated sleep‐related environmental factors in patients according to their functional independence measure (FIM) cognitive scores. Aims: The aim of this study is to examine the associations between environmental factors such as noise and sleep latency according to the FIM cognitive scores among inpatients in rehabilitation wards. Design This is a prospective longitudinal study. Methods: This study measured the sleep state using a bed‐based actigraphy, environmental data from Environmental Sensor®, and medical record information of 33 inpatients in the rehabilitation wards during 2018. A linear mixed‐effect model was used to analyse the associations between sleep latency and environmental factors. Participants were grouped according to high or low FIM cognitive scores. Results: The average patient age was 77.2 ± 10.9 years, and 48.5% were male. In the high FIM cognitive score group, the loudness and frequency of noise exceeding 40 dB during sleep latency were significantly associated with sleep latency. In the low FIM cognitive score group, only the noise frequency was associated with sleep latency, and intra‐individual variance was larger than that of the high group. Conclusion: These findings suggest that providing night care with attention to subdued noise is important, particularly for patients with low cognitive functional independence levels measured by the FIM cognitive score. Patients with high functional independence measure (FIM) cognitive scores had longer sleep latency when both the loudness and frequency of noise exceeded 40 dB.Patients with low FIM cognitive scores had longer sleep latency with frequent noise, regardless of loudness.Nurses should provide care with more caution, taking into consideration the frequency of noise produced, regardless of loudness, particularly for patients with a low cognitive functional independence level measured by the FIM cognitive score. The popularity of Japanese comics or better known as manga had reach worldwide. The production of the manga had also led to the creation of derivative products such as animated series and doujinshi. However, most readers outside Japan accessed these media in a translated format that is published independently from the original publisher. As such, many of the readers might not know the distribution system of the original media. In this paper, we discussed the distribution of manga and doujinshi in Japan. These include discussions regarding the general overview of the manga industry, the different types of published manga and doujinshi, as well as their distribution system. In Japan, the complexity of the teaching profession has been downplayed in the course of repeated systemic reforms, wherein the profession is increasingly viewed as a technical operation. In response to this trend, the concept of "reflective practitioner" (Schön, D. A.) has been proposed as a counterpoint. While it has influenced the discussion of teacher education reform thereafter, it has also been coopted into what Gert Biesta calls "learnification" of teacher education. This paper outlines the trends and debates of teacher education reform in Japan and discusses ways to avoid the "learnification" of teacher education. This paper speaks directly to Item No. 1 of the 8 challenges put forward by the APJTE editors, which concerns the redefinition of teaching "as a technical operation aimed at the effective production of measurable learning outcomes" and its implications for teacher agency, identity and professionalism. It uses Japan as a case to depict the situation in which the trivialisation of teaching into a technical operation and the de-professionalisation of the teaching profession are proceeding not only through the action of educational policy but also through the interaction with discourses that are intended to criticise it. This paper examines the Japanese crown prince and emperor Hirohito during the 1920s to think more critically about how fashion historians can analyze "western" dress in non-western contexts. In particular, this essay looks at Hirohito's embrace of new forms of middle-class menswear—particularly sportswear and the lounge suit—to signal fundamental shifts in the relationship between monarch and subject. These innovations rested upon far more than simply imitating western centers of men's fashion. Instead, this paper argues that to understand the meaning of "western" clothing styles in non-western contexts, fashion studies needs a more sophisticated paradigm than the term "western clothes." While some garments carried strong resonances of their European antecedents, Japanese men like Hirohito adopted them primarily for what they could do in Japan, while also understanding their potential for integrating Japan into the broader world. Mechanical characterization of cells is important for understanding their behavior. This paper reports on an in situ evaluation of the stiffness of cellular spheroids using a pinching device. The pinching device is integrated with a bimorph piezoactuator and strain gauge. It can pinch an object by combining a piezo bimorph actuator and a thin Si structure and can detect the reaction force from an elastic object using a strain gauge integrated into the thin Si structure. The strain gauge can detect the bending deformation of the device and estimate the reaction force by considering actuation. The average bedtime and sleep duration of Japanese students aged 12–18 years was later and shorter, respectively, by 1 h compared with those of Italian students. Japanese students aged 12–15 years were predominantly more evening-typed than Italian students, while there were no significant differences in the morningness-eveningness (M-E) scores between students aged 16–18 years in the two countries. The bedtime of approximately 70% of Italian students was fixed by parents during their childhood, whereas the bedtime of only 40% of Japanese students was fixed by their parents. Morningness-eveningness (M-E) preference and whether it was related to varying mental and physical conditions during the menstrual cycle of female students attending a Japanese junior high school, located in the suburban region in Nangoku city (33.3 N), Kochi prefecture, was studied. Those students who were beyond their first year after menarche were more evening-typed than those who were in their first year of menarche or those who had not yet begun their menstrual function. The M-E preference has no significant correlation with mood, periodical stability of the menstrual cycle or menstrual pain. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder, and polysomnography (PSG) is the gold standard for diagnosing OSA. However, patients often have to wait long before receiving the costly PSG test in a hospital. Hence, low‐cost and easy‐to‐use portable screening tools were developed for predicting OSA. Based on our recent study, this paper presents a feature extraction method with multiple receptive fields applied to the input electrocardiography (ECG) signals of a model to improve its performance in OSA severity classification. This work also employs unsegmented ECG signals as input to keep all the advantages from our original approach. The proposed model achieves an overall accuracy of 59.49% for four‐level OSA severity classification, giving an improvement of approximately 2% compared to our original work. We are increasingly surrounded by talk of digitalization. Yet, we remain unsure about what impact this digitalization will have upon socio-economic institutions, how the introduction of this digitalization will be contested, the likely role of the state in managing the adoption of digital technology, and the likely consequences for the broader political economy if and when it is introduced. This article examines the process of digitalization as it has unfolded in the service sector in Japan. Based on qualitative interviews with managers in the hospitality industry and union officials, the paper depicts a process that contrasts starkly with the more optimistic view adopted by some commentators, according to which digitalization has the potential to improve working conditions and contribute to a more stable form of growth. Instead, the paper draws on Regulation Theory to argue that the introduction of digitalization is part of a wider process of neoliberalization. As such, digitalization has contributed to deskilling, the fragmentation of work tasks, a digital divide, the intensification of work, and higher levels of workplace surveillance. In contrast to expectations that the greater visibility of aid increases the donor's prestige, this paper examines why certain donor countries may seek to render their aid programs invisible. As the case of Japan's early Triangular Development Cooperation (TDC) in Southeast Asia demonstrates, donors at times seek to conceal their presence to better secure their national interests. By approaching this (in-)visibility puzzle through the focus on its politics, this study highlights the complexity of donors' motivations in selectively activating (in-)visibility in TDC. Via a historicised account of Japan's post-war aid/economic cooperation relationship with Southeast Asia, the paper finds how the triangular mechanism allowed Japan and Thailand as an intermediary to selectively render their presence in-/visible to shun hostile sentiments against them in order to pursue their respective diplomatic goals. When designing a controller based on a fuzzy model composed of fuzzy rules, in most cases controllers are designed only based on the consequent parts of the fuzzy rules, equally meaning the information of the antecedent parts is merely ignored. This paper first partitions all of the rules into two groups based on the information of the antecedent parts, in which one contains certain rules around the origin, and the other is a group of rules away from the origin. While being able to make the former arbitrarily small, each rule of the latter leads to a favorable quadratic inequality, which will be useful in controller design by the help of the S‐procedure. On the other hand, while the affine T‐S fuzzy model is much more effective for describing the dynamics of the system concerned in comparison with the regular T‐S fuzzy model, it encounters some difficulties when designing a controller based on the model because of the affine terms within. This paper makes clear that the difficulties can be overcame by using the quadratic inequalities based on the fuzzy rule partition. This paper analysed the nature of autonomy, in particular respect for autonomy in medical ethics/bioethics in Japan. We have undertaken a literature survey in Japanese and English and begin with the historical background and explanation of the Japanese word Jiritsu (autonomy). We go on to identify patterns of meaning that researchers use in medical ethics / bioethics discussions in Japan, namely, Beauchamp and Childress's individual autonomy, relational autonomy, and O'Neill's principled autonomy as the three major ways that autonomy is understood. We examine papers discussing these interpretations. We propose using the term 'a form of autonomy' first used by Edmund Pellegrino in 1992 and examine the nature of 'a form of autonomy.' We finally conclude that the crux of what Pellegrino calls 'something close to autonomy,' or 'a form of autonomy' might best be understood as the minimization of physician paternalism and the maximization of respect for patient preference. Simultaneously, we introduce a family-facilitated approach to informed consent and respond to criticism by Laura Sullivan. Finally, we discuss cross-cultural approaches and global bioethics. Furthermore, we use the term 'Bioethics across the Globe' instead of 'Global Bioethics', calling for international scholars to write works to provide an in-depth understanding of each country. We conclude that deep understanding of others is pivotal for dialogue to be of value. As an unconventional clean resource with huge reserves and a wide distribution, natural gas hydrates (NGHs) have good application prospects. However, due to limited understanding and available production technology for NGHs, there is still a large gap between current production tests and commercial exploitation. A breakthrough in reservoir stimulation technologies is key to realizing the industrialization of NGHs in the future. Through a comprehensive summary of hydrate production test cases in Japan and China, this paper highlights the difficulties in the transformation of weakly-consolidated reservoirs. By systematically reviewing the theory and technology of hydrate reservoir transformation and engineering applications, this paper elucidates in detail the technical principles and mechanisms of several available stimulation technologies for weakly-consolidated reservoirs, and assesses the feasibility of their application to increase the production of NGHs. Existing problems and challenges are summarized and future prospects are discussed. This paper examines the trends and challenges of Taiwanese studies in Japan, focusing on political history. The first section reviews Taiwanese studies in Japan in recent years, with a focus on political research. The second section discusses the issues to be worked on for this discipline's future, especially pertaining to the discussion on "external" and "internal" legitimacy for the postwar Republic of China (ROC) government in Taiwan. The third section examines ways to comprehend the changes in the ROC's status in Taiwanese politics and society after the political transformation began in the 1970s. Taiwanese studies in Japan have long emphasized revealing the characteristics of Taiwanese society and history. Although such an attitude is still quite important, this paper highlights that knowing how to value the "Chineseness" of the ROC government in Taiwan is also an important subject. Further examination of the link between international and internal politics in Taiwan will be one of the most important subjects for future Taiwanese studies in Japan on politics. Extensive research investigates how immigration shapes natives' anti-immigrant sentiment. However, several areas require further scrutiny. This paper explores how processes of immigration affect anti-immigrant sentiment in a new immigration destination country—Japan—drawing on longitudinal data to examine these processes over time and explicitly testing the mechanisms of perceived threat and intergroup contact posited to underpin this relationship. Through this analysis, the paper aims to: examine how generalizable the immigrant share/immigration attitudes theoretical framework is to non-Western societies; refine our understanding of the mechanisms underpinning this relationship; and more robustly test its causal assumptions. To pursue these aims, the study draws on two sets of nationally representative Japanese data, designed to generate complementary insights, including: four waves of longitudinal panel data (2008–2014) and a unique cross-sectional dataset containing measures of perceived threat and contact. Applying multilevel and fixed-effects panel data approaches, the findings demonstrate that as immigration increases in Japanese prefectures and municipalities, residents become increasingly averse toward immigration (although there is some evidence of non-linearity at the municipality level, with sentiment improving again in high immigrant share environments). This overall relationship appears largely driven by two competing processes. In higher immigrant share environments, perceived threat is higher, increasing anti-immigrant sentiment. However, concurrently, intergroup contact also increases in these environments, reducing anti-immigrant sentiment. Therefore, despite the overall negative relationship (driven primarily by perceived threat), rising contact exerts a countervailing positive effect as immigration increases. Taken together, this research demonstrates that theories of attitudinal-change with higher immigration, developed within Western-contexts, also appear salient for newer destination, non-Western societies. This paper proposes a three‐layer coordinated optimization strategy based on fuzzy control of renewable energy sources (RESs), vehicle‐to‐grid (V2G) and energy storage. Firstly, the overall structure of this strategy is introduced, which is composed of V2G management system, renewable energy dispatching system and energy storage (ES) real‐time balancing system. Secondly, the control strategy is proposed for different systems, among them, the V2G management system considers shortage of power grid, forecasted maximum output of RESs, and state of charge (SOC) of electric vehicles (EVs) to calculate the charging plan for each EV in next time interval by fuzzy control algorithm; The renewable energy management system gets the expected shortage state of the power grid in the next period according to the charging plan and the current state of the power grid, then combined with the battery state of the energy storage system, the renewable energy guiding power generation in the next period can be calculated by the fuzzy control algorithm; The energy storage real‐time balancing system can charge or discharge according to the real‐time frequency and shortage of power grid to ensure balance between supply and demand of power grid. Finally, the simulation proves that the three‐layer management strategy proposed in this paper can help grid to cut peak and fill valley effectively, improve the load characteristics of the regional power grid and reduce the amounts of the rejected renewable energy. © 2022 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Societies of the East are often contrasted with those of the West in their stances toward technology. This paper explores these perceived differences in the context of international ethics guidance for artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. Japan serves as an example of the East, while Europe and North America serve as examples of the West. The paper's principal aim is to demonstrate that Western values predominate in international ethics guidance and that Japanese values serve as a much-needed corrective. We recommend a hybrid approach that is more inclusive and truly 'international'. Following an introduction, the paper examines distinct stances toward robots that emerged in the West and Japan, respectively, during the aftermath of the Second World War, reflecting history and popular culture, socio-economic conditions, and religious worldviews. It shows how international ethics guidelines reflect these disparate stances, drawing on a 2019 scoping review that examined 84 international AI ethics documents. These documents are heavily skewed toward precautionary values associated with the West and cite the optimistic values associated with Japan less frequently. Drawing insights from Japan's so-called 'moonshot goals', the paper fleshes out Japanese values in greater detail and shows how to incorporate them more effectively in international ethics guidelines for AI and robotics. The bio-medical model of 'mental health' and 'mental illness' that relates to the relationship between wellbeing and distress informs psychopathology and dominates conceptualisation in many Western Educated Industrialised Rich Democratic (WEIRD) populations. This paper aims to critique the model, questioning the appropriateness of psychopathology as a conceptual framework when working as a Western trained clinician with populations such as in China, Japan, Asia, the Middle-East and Africa. This paper is aimed at improve accuracy of angular position synchronization control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor driving system. Traditional PID controller could not meet requirement due to poor dynamic characteristics. The Global Fast Terminal Sliding Mode Control (GFTSMC) has good ant‐disturbance ability, could make system more robust and realize synchronization control of angular position. But due to error in load torque observation, system state convergence error will be caused, which will reduce the accuracy of synchronization. In this paper, fractional‐order differentiation is used to replace the nonlinear part of GFTSMC, constructed Fractional Order Differentiation—GFTSMC (FOD‐GFTSMC) controller to improve accuracy of synchronization. Theoretical analysis will be used to demonstrate that this control strategy could improve convergence accuracy of system state, reduces error of synchronization, and some experiments will be carried out to verify that this kind of controller has high synchronization accuracy, fast dynamic response ability and strong robustness. © 2022 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. This paper explains the implementation of Quality Management System right from the inception of factory. At first stage, to establish the plant quality system, Sample Motor Accomplishment Project (SMAP) was conceived. A CFT (Cross Functional Team) was formed so that quality systems are established at all functions viz. Design, PPC, SCM, Production, QAQC. The supplier quality evaluations were also performed to establish quality for outsourced parts. 5 Sample products covering the complete manufacturing range of motors were selected, the necessary regulations, QCP, WSS check-sheets, design standards, material standards, manufacturing standard documents were prepared as part of quality documents. The products were designed, manufactured, and tested complying to above stated quality documents. The entire process was validated and confirmed by Japan Technology Executive. The necessary awareness on Quality Management Systems, Internal auditor course were provided to concerned employees. In the second stage, Motor Factory decided to get the QMS certified as per ISO 9001-2015 standard. Accordingly, approached reputed international certifying agency, got the audit done and obtained QMS certification. The paper explains the initiatives taken to share the learnings constantly and upgrading the supplier know-how and know-why related to Quality Management Systems. The paper will also share few experimential learnings, best practices related to unified systems, new capabilities being added to the existing QMS Systems, analytic solutions to improve the system.
