Concrete stands as the most widely used construction material globally due to its versatility, encompassing applications ranging from pavement, multifloor structures, and bridges to dams. However, these concrete structures endure structural stress and require close monitoring to prevent accidents and ensure sustainability throughout their complete life cycle. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision (CV) have demonstrated considerable potential in diverse applications within construction engineering, including structural health monitoring (SHM) and inspection processes such as crack and damage detection, as well as rebar exposure. While it is undeniable that CV and deep learning models are transforming the construction industry by offering robust solutions for complex scenarios, there remain numerous challenges pertinent to their applications that require attention. This paper aims to systematically and critically review the literature of the past decade on the application of deep learning models in the construction industry for SHM purposes in concrete structures. The review delves into proposed methodologies and technologies while identifying opportunities and challenges associated with these applications in practice. To effectively combat the re-infestation of boll weevils (Anthonomus grandis L.) in cotton fields, it is necessary to address the detection of volunteer cotton (VC) plants (Gossypium hirsutum L.) in rotation crops such as corn (Zea mays L.) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.). The current practice involves manual field scouting at the field edges, which often leads to the oversight of VC plants growing in the middle of fields alongside corn and sorghum. As these VC plants reach the pinhead squaring stage (5–6 leaves), they can become hosts for boll weevil pests. Consequently, it becomes crucial to detect, locate, and accurately spot-spray these plants with appropriate chemicals. This paper focuses on the application of YOLOv5m to detect and locate VC plants during the tasseling (VT) growth stage of cornfields. Our results demonstrate that VC plants can be detected with a mean average precision (mAP) of 79% at an Intersection over Union (IoU) of 50% and a classification accuracy of 78% on images sized 1207 × 923 pixels. The average detection inference speed is 47 frames per second (FPS) on the NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPU-16 GB and 0.4 FPS on the NVIDIA Jetson TX2 GPU, which underscores the relevance and impact of detection speed on the feasibility of real-time applications. Additionally, we show the application of a customized unmanned aircraft system (UAS) for spot-spray applications through simulation based on the developed computer vision (CV) algorithm. This UAS-based approach enables the near-real-time detection and mitigation of VC plants in corn fields, with near-real-time defined as approximately 0.02 s per frame on the NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPU and 2.5 s per frame on the NVIDIA Jetson TX2 GPU, thereby offering an efficient management solution for controlling boll weevil pests. Computer Vision (CV) has become increasingly important for Single-Board Computers (SBCs) due to their widespread deployment in addressing real-world problems. Specifically, in the context of smart cities, there is an emerging trend of developing end-to-end video analytics solutions designed to address urban challenges such as traffic management, disaster response, and waste management. However, deploying CV solutions on SBCs presents several pressing challenges (e.g., limited computation power, inefficient energy management, and real-time processing needs) hindering their use at scale. Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) and software-level developments have emerged recently in addressing these challenges to enable the elevated performance of SBCs; however, it is still an active area of research. There is a gap in the literature for a comprehensive review of such recent and rapidly evolving advancements on both software and hardware fronts. The presented review provides a detailed overview of the existing GPU-accelerated edge-computing SBCs and software advancements including algorithm optimization techniques, packages, development frameworks, and hardware deployment specific packages. This review provides a subjective comparative analysis based on critical factors to help applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) researchers in demonstrating the existing state of the art and selecting the best suited combinations for their specific use-case. The computer vision industry has experienced a significant surge in growth, resulting in numerous promising breakthroughs in computer intelligence. The present review paper outlines the advantages and potential future implications of utilizing this technology in education. A total of 84 research publications have been thoroughly scrutinized and analyzed. The study revealed that computer vision technology integrated with a mobile application is exceptionally useful in monitoring students’ perceptions and mitigating academic dishonesty. Additionally, it facilitates the digitization of handwritten scripts for plagiarism detection and automates attendance tracking to optimize valuable classroom time. Furthermore, several potential applications of computer vision technology for educational institutions have been proposed to enhance students’ learning processes in various faculties, such as engineering, medical science, and others. Transformers are Deep Neural Networks (DNN) that utilize a self-attention mechanism to capture contextual relationships within sequential data. Unlike traditional neural networks and variants of Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), such as Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Transformer models excel at managing long dependencies among input sequence elements and facilitate parallel processing. Consequently, Transformer-based models have garnered significant attention from researchers in the field of artificial intelligence. This is due to their tremendous potential and impressive accomplishments, which extend beyond Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks to encompass various domains, including Computer Vision (CV), audio and speech processing, healthcare, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Although several survey papers have been published, spotlighting the Transformer's contributions in specific fields, architectural disparities, or performance assessments, there remains a notable absence of a comprehensive survey paper that encompasses its major applications across diverse domains. Therefore, this paper addresses this gap by conducting an extensive survey of proposed Transformer models spanning from 2017 to 2022. Our survey encompasses the identification of the top five application domains for Transformer-based models, namely: NLP, CV, multi-modality, audio and speech processing, and signal processing. We analyze the influence of highly impactful Transformer-based models within these domains and subsequently categorize them according to their respective tasks, employing a novel taxonomy.
