Departmental writing retreats for academics in higher education are one of the strategies used to enhance publication outputs and information sharing as well as the development of research discourse. Using a collaborative autoethnographic reflexivity approach, the aims of this consolidative analysis were to identify the attributes that the participants (seven Mathematics Education researchers) regarded as effective in the online writing retreat and examine the components of the writing retreat that facilitated publication output. This paper employs Wenger's Community of Practice as the theoretical frame to critically evaluate reflective experiences from the online writing retreats. Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis was used to analyse reflective experiences. The analysis unearthed many personal research needs and some of the key elements of the writing retreat that were regarded as conducive to fast tracking and advancing publication outputs. The elements I focus on in this paper are protected quality time and space to write; formation of a community of practice and attending to reviewers' post-review comments. The contention is that researchers can achieve greater publication outputs for their departments and organisations during the writing retreats, particularly when provided with critical and formative feedback on their writing. Further research should be conducted to explore and examine researchers' experiences of attending the writing retreats, especially using online platforms, as well as understanding the elements of writing retreats that advance the publication outcomes.

In this paper we present findings from an initial phase of a more extensive study focussed on ways in which prospective mathematics teachers negotiate meaning from mathematics teacher education situations. The focus of this paper is on the language of one mathematics teacher educator and specifically the interpersonal aspects from one mathematics teacher education lecture in Sweden for prospective upper-primary school teachers. We draw on the enactivist view of cognition as a theoretical basis for a methodology we develop that utilises Systemic Functional Linguistics as an analytical tool for studying language-in-use. We exemplify our interpretations through a series of extracts from the mathematics education lecture. This initial phase of our study has exposed several important questions about how participating in an initial teacher education situation may contribute to the development of teacher identities, questions we raise throughout our analyses to provoke further investigation as part of our future research.

Purpose: There is some evidence to suggest that the historical challenge associated with recruiting and retaining Black and Brown Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) collegians is tied to early their teaching and learning experiences in Mathematics. This paper describes an National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project (NSF #2151043) whose goal is to attract, prepare and retain math teachers of color in high need school districts ensure that those teachers remain in the field long enough to make a meaningful impact on the minds and hearts of BIPOC students who are often, extrinsically, and intrinsically, discouraged from pursuing careers in STEM professions. Design/methodology/approach: This mixed-methods study, which began in the summer of 2023, seeks to recruit, prepare, support and retain nineteen (19) Black and Brown math teachers for two (2) high need urban school districts. The expectancy value theory will be used to explain the performance, persistence, and choices of the teachers, while grounded theory will be utilized to understand the impact of the intensive mentorship and wellness coaching that applied over the first year of their preservice preparation and subsequent in-service years. Findings: Measures of project efficacy won't begin until 2025 and as such there are no findings or implications to draw from for the study at this time. Originality/value: The intention of this paper is to augment the body of knowledge on recruiting and retaining Black and Brown math teachers for urban schools where the need for quality STEM teachers is critical.

In recent years, there has been an increasing amount of literature on online teaching and learning. Teaching mathematics in the fourth industrial revolution offers entry-level mathematics teachers formidable challenges. Despite using various teaching aids in explaining the learning area, entry-level mathematics teachers, those with zero to three years of teaching experience, have experienced challenges in blended teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. Such challenges could support the preconceived notion identified by others that the field of learning (mathematics) is difficult. This paper hinged on constructivist epistemology and investigated the challenges that entry-level mathematics teachers face in conducting blended teaching in the Sedibeng West District of Gauteng Province in the Republic of South Africa. Eight entry-level mathematics teachers were purposely sampled from four selected schools that participated in the article. This article adopted a case study design and responses were analysed thematically. The focus group interviews were used as tools to collect data in this study. The study revealed a variety of perceptions that entry-level mathematics teachers shared about the impact of blended teaching in mathematics learning. These included, but were not limited to, the use of teaching programs or software, the effects of load shedding and blended teaching challenges related to learners' performance and behaviour. The results of this study could provide program developers, subject advisors, school principals with other members of the management team, and mathematics teachers to support the entry-level mathematics teacher's confidence, sense of future and communication skills, as well as foster multigenerational connections in blended teaching.

This paper seeks to gain insights into teachers' perceptions, and readiness to integrate information and communication technology (ICT) tools in mathematics instruction. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving surveys and interviews with a sample of high school mathematics teachers. The study involved 90 mathematics teachers working in three senior high schools in Kumasi metropolis in Ghana. The study revealed that teachers generally hold positive perceptions of the benefits of ICT tools in mathematics teaching. They strongly agree that ICT tools enhance students' understanding of mathematical concepts and improve their engagement and motivation in mathematics classes. Teachers also recognize the potential of ICT tools in promoting problem-solving skills and providing opportunities for differentiation and personalized learning. However, opinions regarding student-centered learning, exploration, and creativity through ICT tools were more varied, suggesting a need for further investigation and support in these areas. In addition teachers expressed the need for continuous training on specific tools, curriculum alignment, and assessment methods.

Online learning became a necessity in many places during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the case of Hong Kong SAR, the pandemic provided a unique opportunity to establish blended learning as a norm. The authors discuss the insights and challenges related to delivering mathematics lessons online in a secondary school during and after the pandemic. A three-year-long case study was conducted to examine the differences in perceptions between a teacher and his five students regarding online mathematics instruction during the suspension of traditional in-class lessons in 2020 and after the resumption of traditional instruction in 2023. The Social-Ecological Approach with domains of structure, agency, and cultural practice was applied in the study, which investigated the perceived benefits of blended learning for both the students and the teachers. Data was collected via interviews. The study explored technological challenges, curriculum adaptations, and the impact of parental support on blended learning. Looking ahead, leveraging motivators like easy access while mitigating distractors through disciplined strategies can optimize blended learning environments. The insights gained from this study provide valuable guidance on the effectiveness of instructional strategies and technological tools, highlighting the features of best practices for future blended learning approaches. Furthermore, the paper provides valuable information for policymakers, educators, and educational technology developers.

The article is based on the lecture ‘Mathematics teacher training from the perspective of STEM – a particular case’ given by its author at the ATCM 2023 conference and is an extension of a related paper that was published in the conference proceedings. It further develops the idea that the task of teacher training schools is to create a suitable environment for the provision of education, impulses for the development of the necessary knowledge and skills, as well as to support these. It provides a detailed description of specific creative activities for future teachers, which develop their awareness of the applicability of mathematics in solving real problems and knowledge of its overlap with technology. It is based on historical problems and their context, as presented in the conference paper. This paper presents an alternative approach of teaching, learning and solving systems of two linear equations for two unknowns that yield no solutions. We conducted a desk-based research on methods that have been used by in-service mathematics teachers for teaching systems of two linear equations in ordinary secondary schools. It was found that five common methods (substitution, elimination, graphical, inverse matrix, Cramer's rule) have been used for teaching a system of two linear equations for two unknowns that yield no solution and all methods yield the same answer regardless of having different ways of approaching the system. We realized that a crossing method (alternative approach) is not found in the literature and yet not used by teachers for teaching students a system of two linear equations that yield no solution. But this crossing method yields similar answers with that resulted when using the five common methods. We present this alternative method in this paper by comparing with the answers obtained using five methods while focusing on two systems of two linear equations that yield no solution. This new approach has implications in teaching, learning and solving systems of two linear equations that yield no solutions in ordinary secondary schools, including mathematics teachers and educators can use this method for teaching students in solving systems of two linear equations for two unknowns that yield no solutions. The paper describes a case study of mentoring support provided to a novice mathematics teacher in using Guided Discovery in her classroom. The study used qualitative methods: thematic analysis of interviews and discussions. A central theme that emerged in the results was agency, and we observed that the high level of student and teacher agency in Guided Discovery results in the importance of teacher agency within and over the mentoring framework. We conclude that when supporting teachers in using Guided Discovery in their mathematics classrooms, teacher educators need to put an increased focus on teacher agency within and over the mentoring process. The objective of this paper was to examine the present state of geometric constructions in both international and national mathematics assessments. Additionally, it aimed to shed light on the noticeable lack of geometric construction items in these assessments and propose a solution to incorporate such items by utilizing a web-based mathematics assessment tool. After providing a brief summary of the unique benefits associated with geometric construction problems, the subsequent paper explored the development of a web-based mathematics assessment tool, the procedure for generating automatic evaluation GeoGebra applets for geometric construction problems, and their integration into Moodle learning management system (LMS). The purpose of this assessment tool was to enhance the evaluation of a substantially larger group of students within the realm of geometric constructions. The final section of the paper examined the difficulties encountered in the creation of the automatic evaluation applets and their incorporation into Moodle LMS. Through the development of such a web-based mathematics assessment tool, we enabled the evaluation of a significantly larger number of students, thus aiding not only national and international mathematics examinations but also assisting mathematics teachers in tracking students' scores and progress. This paper clarifies and expands the definition of teacher professional practice, grounded in the commonplaces of professionalism outlined by Lee Shulman. We present the Professional Development: Research, Implementation, and Evaluation (PrimeD) framework as a lens for transforming professional development into a practice that engages teachers as professionals. This discussion explores teachers' roles in both their classrooms and the profession. The inclusion of PrimeD evaluation and research in the development and practice of mathematics teachers addresses Shulman's professionalism commonplaces. PrimeD was tested as a lens for professionalism in mathematics teacher education programs at four universities. In the study, teachers collaborated as professionals on developing and testing novel ways to approach mathematics lessons. In general, teachers' efforts to conduct structured experimentation in their lessons were disconnected from traditional views of the role of a teacher. As a result, teachers who did develop and test lesson trials in this PD program did not frequently continue experimentation. Typically, teachers wanted to collaborate on testing classroom activities but did not have resources to do so (e.g., time, collaborative planning). Microteaching has been viewed as a professional development tool that gives pre-service teachers the chance to strengthen their teaching skills. This paper presents an overview of the research on microteaching in mathematics teacher education, noting its prospects and challenges while also making recommendations for modifications to its application. A thorough analysis of 28 empirical papers on microteaching in mathematics teacher preparation that were published between 2000 and 12 May 2023, was conducted. Findings demonstrate that microteaching is an effective approach for enhancing pre-service teachers' core mathematics teaching skills. It is suggested that microteaching, which begins in a laboratory setting with the development of essential teaching skills, should not end there; it should give trainee teachers an opportunity to learn and practice in a real classroom context. Microteaching activities require more time, more supervisors, and more resources to function at its maximum capacity. Technology has also demonstrated greater promise when it comes to enhancing microteaching's position in facilitating the development of pre-service mathematics teachers' instructional skills. Research investigating teachers' knowledge and practices aimed to improve student participation, engagement and achievement in mathematics and science has often used qualitative methods involving observation and analysis of lesson videos. Some researchers have used excerpts of videos in various ways to gather data about their participants' anticipated actions in the moment. In the current study, we aimed to track primary teachers' developing adaptive expertise when teaching interdisciplinary mathematics and science lessons over a two-year period. In this paper, we describe the processes followed to design a questionnaire that used episodes from videos of interdisciplinary mathematics and science lessons to construct multiple choice items. The adaptive expertise scoring for the items was reliable but this improved when including an open-ended question for participants to explain their selection of an action for the classroom moment captured in the video episode. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the field of education. The possibilities of AI in education range from providing intelligent tutoring to facilitating computational thinking, a key skill in an AI-based society. As education systems around the world adapt to technological advances, the need for teachers to develop AI skills becomes crucial. This paper explores the use of AI on mobile devices to improve the preparation of future mathematics teachers. We acknowledge the need for teachers to be skilled in the use of AI tools to foster collaborative, effective, and ethical learning environments. We also provide a case study of our implementation of the generative AI ChatGPT in the preparation of future mathematics teachers at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science at Comenius University in Bratislava. After this implementation, we analyzed students' opinions on the application of AI in selected areas. We present the results of this analysis and the implications for the practical use of AI in the university education of future mathematics teachers. Finally, based on our study results, we highlight the possibilities of the successful use of AI in different aspects of teaching and its temporary limitations, which are likely to be reduced by further technological developments. The Spring 2024 edition of the Journal of Mathematics Education at Teachers College features three research papers that explore how teachers can support their students and each other in impactful moments in mathematics teaching. Two of the papers focus on discrete mathematics, with one examining the use of manipulatives in teaching probability and the other exploring a problem-based curriculum. Another paper investigates the impact of mathematical game play on student achievement, particularly for female students in Nigeria. Additionally, there is an analysis of pre-service mathematics teachers' knowledge and understanding of assessment literacy, highlighting the challenges they may face and providing recommendations for teacher educators. The study of mathematics teachers’ beliefs has become a significant research area in recent decades; however, more robust and reliable instruments are needed to assess these beliefs. This paper reports the design and validation of a multiple-choice questionnaire to assess mathematics teachers’ beliefs about mathematics, teaching, and learning. It began with a systematic review of existing questionnaires, followed by an evaluation of the instrument’s content validity using Aiken’s V by seven expert judges. Finally, a total of 199 in-service mathematics teachers completed the instrument, demonstrating construct validity through confirmatory factor analysis and internal consistency. These results indicate that the instrument is reliable and valid for assessing mathematics teachers’ beliefs and identifying three teaching profiles: instrumentalists, platonists, and problem-solving. The fourth industrial revolution has brought about significant changes in various fields including the education sector. It is increasingly essential for individuals, particularly student teachers, to embrace lifelong learning and acquire the know-how and skills required to grow into autonomous and critical thinkers. In this paper, we examine the virtual "air campus" experiences of 39 first-year student teachers of mathematics at a rural university in South Africa's Eastern Cape Province. The heutagogical approach served as a lens for trainee teachers' virtual "air campus" explorations. An exploratory qualitative case study design was employed to provide answers to two main questions that guided the inquiry. Findings of the study show that trainee teachers had varied experiences regarding what they learned from their virtual "air campus" visits. These include what constitutes effective teaching and how students learn as well as correction of common misconceptions regarding specific concepts in school mathematics. Through virtual lesson observations on the "air campus" of their choice, trainee teachers were also able to create their professional identities in terms of their future goals, ideal teacher traits, and desired teaching and learning environments. These findings demonstrate that integrating virtual learning environments into teacher education curricula and assessment has practical implications for enhancing trainee teachers' self-directed learning, critical thinking, and professional identity development. In this paper, we consider multiple sites of disenchantment and re-enchantment in assessment practice through the use of dialogue, reflection and speculative writing. We contend that this reflexive speculative approach enables us to dream first and negotiate later our future assessment practices. We argue that assessment systems in teacher education are part of a plantation infrastructure and discuss the many ways in which current standards of assessment in teacher education are disenchanting. These disenchantments lay the groundwork for the use of a speculative approach in provoking more positively daring imaginations for assessment. Many modern learning systems rely on a data representation of the knowledge that is to be learned to estimate a learner's mastery state and recommend appropriate learning tasks to further improve their acquisition of knowledge and skills. In particular, the rapid development of intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) and standardized curricula has increased the need for information on knowledge structures and their links to learning materials and tasks. However, manually labeling educational data has traditionally been a time-consuming, labor-intensive task, and thus has limited its use by time-constrained teachers and practitioners. In previous research, a range of machine-learning methods have been proposed to address this problem, with only a few of them focusing on Japanese educational datasets from secondary schools. In this paper, to support the labeling of Japanese mathematics exercises by teachers and other domain experts, we apply natural language processing techniques including word-embedding and key-phrase-based exercise-to-exercise similarity methods. We evaluated the proposed method by both the performance of the models when compared to several state-of-the-art methods, and also its effectiveness in supporting humans in the task of labeling educational materials. Through this two-phase evaluation, we found that the proposed method outperformed other methods, and when implemented in a human-in-the-loop system it achieved significantly more accuracy and consumed less time for the task of labeling mathematics exercises. This paper reports on a revision of the assessment model from the first mathematics course for pre-service teachers (PSTs) aiming for grades 5-10, at a Norwegian university. The weight of the final written exam was reduced and a new, mastery-based testing model, with weekly small tests, was introduced. Results from this study show that the PSTs were positive about the new assessment form, which contributed to a feeling of mastering the subject, although they also expressed some inconveniences, such as the weekly testing could be perceived as stressful. Further, the continuous testing made the PSTs start studying from the start of the semester and not postponing it to the last weeks before the final exam. It is likely that this contributed to the improved result on the national exam at the end of the semester, which was significantly better than the results from the previous years. To adapt teaching to the prerequisites of students, teachers have various options at their disposal to gather and process information as the basis to form a judgment, such as carrying out tests, talking to and observing the behavior of students, or administering tasks. The complexity of such a judgment arises from the multitude of observations and their different possible explanations. This complexity might be reduced when teachers focus on one hypothesis instead of considering multiple hypotheses, interpret information in a confirmatory way, and not collect diagnostically relevant information. However, in this way, they run the risk of undesirable biased judgments. It therefore seems important to improve diagnostic judgments by selecting and processing information in a more reflective way. Research indicates that if information on a student is not easily available but restricted (e.g., by time pressure, difficult access to the student or high effort), a teacher who wants to make a careful decision is forced to rely on more reflective processes in the selection of tasks and in the interpretation of solutions. The present experimental study therefore investigates how the restricted availability of information in a specific diagnostic situation-when diagnostically inexperienced prospective mathematics teachers determine misconceptions in decimal fractions-influences the underlying cognitive processes. We assume that restricting the availability of information on student behavior augments the attentional focus and therefore reduces cognitive biases. Such more reflective processing can be observed by an increased time spent per piece of information, which should lead to the processing of relevant information and further increase judgment accuracy. To investigate these hypotheses, prospective teachers without prior knowledge in diagnosing misconceptions (N = 81) were asked to diagnose misconceptions on decimal fractions of virtual students by collecting information on students’ solutions. Data concerning the effects of restricting the availability of information on teachers’ cognitive processes were analyzed. The results show that with restricted information, participants indeed select a greater proportion of diagnostically relevant tasks, which positively influences judgment accuracy. The objective of this research is to describe the situation of mathematical training in the early childhood education degree curricula in Spain through the analysis of the teaching guides of the subjects with mathematical content offered in the different Spanish universities. The aim is to identify the typology of subjects, the number of subjects offered, and the recommended bibliography. The methodology used is descriptive, exploratory, ex post facto, and census. For this purpose, the registry of universities, centers, and degrees was first consulted during the 2019-2020 academic year to obtain a list of all the Spanish universities that offer degrees in early childhood education and, therefore, to be able to download the corresponding teaching guides. Of the 91 universities in Spain, the early childhood education degree is taught in 66. Likewise, 101 subjects with mathematical content have been identified, although only 99 are available for analysis. Most are compulsory, have a study load of six European credit transfer system (ECTS) credits, and are taught in the third year of the degree. This study aims to reveal the views and suggestions of in-service mathematics teachers about supporting online learning. Many times, studies indicate the teachers' views related to the advantages and disadvantages of online learning. However, limited studies investigate teachers' views for improving the online learning environment. Thus, this study reveals teachers' recommendations for supporting elearning. To achieve this, a case study was conducted to describe teachers' views. Data were collected from four middle and high school mathematics teachers through interviews, reflections, and lesson plans for online mathematics education courses. Teachers' views and suggestions related to supporting online learning were coded under five categories: norms, selection of manipulatives, building a community of learners, participation in group work, and assessment in the online learning environment. Drawing on Martin's Multilevel Framework for Analyzing Mathematics Socialization and Identity Among African Americans this study explores the mechanisms that influence Black students' decision-making processes related to math course taking in high school. Three years of student transcript data for 1561 Black seniors in a Southern California school district were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression analyses in STATA. The findings reveal factors that impact students' ability and desire to complete a fourth year of math in high school, interconnected with institutional, structural, identity, and parental factors. One such finding is that accelerated 8th-grade math placement significantly increases the likelihood that a student would enroll in upper-level math coursework, such as "Beyond IM3" courses in high school. The researcher also investigated the influence of the concentration of Black math teachers in a school on the likelihood of a Black student enrolling in a Beyond IM3 math course. The results of this study contribute to an understanding of the limited racial diversity in STEM fields, highlighting the role of math as a major deterrent for Black students' interest and persistence in STEM. The findings suggest the need for policy and curriculum changes to promote equitable access to advanced math coursework for Black students, especially in the 8th grade. This study also emphasizes the need to address the structural and institutional factors that influence Black students' decision-making processes related to math course taking in high school. This study aimed to examine pre-service middle school mathematics teachers' purposes of using ChatGPT in lesson plan development. Phenomenology, one of the qualitative research designs, was applied in this study. A total of 56 third-grade pre-service middle school mathematics teachers, 43 females and 13 males were selected for the study. A questionnaire with open-ended questions was employed to gather data. First, pre-service teachers were asked to select one or more learning outcomes in the mathematics curriculum and prepare a lesson plan to address these outcomes using the ChatGPT program. Then, they completed the questionnaire. Content analysis was utilized in the current study to analyze the data. According to the results of the study, ChatGPT served as a valuable tool for pre-service mathematics teachers during lesson plan development. While not all participants utilized it for every subcategory, ChatGPT played a significant role in various aspects, including determining the subject scope, getting creative and interesting ideas, explaining math concepts, establishing relationships and the course flow, developing learning activities, problems, and evaluation tools, and even reviewing and improving the lesson plan. Moreover, pre-service teachers used ChatGPT to deepen their knowledge of mathematical concepts, learning strategies, and teaching models. STEM (Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology) education has widely been considered to have the potential to prepare students with 21st-century skills. Though the Government of Bangladesh (GoB) is concerned with developing human resources for the 21st-century, STEM education has not yet achieved a strong position in the national curriculum system. This study aims to provide a guideline to the GoB to take necessary steps to integrate STEM initiatives aligned with the current science and mathematics curriculum. Adopting a literature survey on the integrated STEM approach, document analysis (primary math and science curriculum, textbook, and teachers' guide of grade 3, 4, and 5) and semi-structured interviews of the primary mathematics teachers, head teachers, STEM experts and curriculum developers of Bangladesh, a framework of integrated STEM approach for primary level has been developed. Besides, the study identified some chapters from science and mathematics textbooks where there are some scopes to integrate the STEM approach and also developed some STEM activities for grade 3, 4, and 5 as future guidelines to the practitioners. This study contributes to the field of STEM-focused primary education in the context of Bangladesh by offering practical guidelines for academic institutions, curriculum developers, teachers' trainers, and policy makers of the country. The growing impact and importance of artificial intelligence in society has led to an increasing interest for the potential of artificial intelligence as an educational tool in schools to aid both students and teachers. In this study we investigate digitally skilled K-12 mathematics teachers’ (N=85) attitudes towards and expectations on the role of artificial intelligence in the classroom. The study was done by conducting and analyzing the results of a web-based survey among Swedish and Finnish speaking mathematics teachers using a mixed methods strategy. The Will, Skill and Tool framework was used for the analysis. The survey was done before the introduction of ChatGPT-3. The results indicate that the teachers’ attitudes toward AI tools in school are characterized by interest, openness, and awareness. Teachers have a balanced view on the possibilities and risks of AI use in school. However, the teachers also stress that there is a risk that AI tools will shift the focus from learning key mathematical skills towards learning and interaction with the AI tools themselves. While the pre-service teacher education (PSTE) programme holds global significance, there is a lack of evidence regarding its impact on the teaching practices of mathematics student teachers. Therefore, this study examines the impact of PSTE programmes on mathematics student teachers' teaching practices during school experiences. Grounded in a post-positivist paradigm, the study employs a mixed-methods research approach and a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design to gather data through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The research findings indicate that PSTE programmes have a significant impact on mathematics student teachers' ability to teach mathematical content that aligns with curriculum standards, enhances their subject knowledge, and increases their confidence. However, the programmes have minimal influence on their ability to implement differentiated instruction during their teaching practices. Based on these findings, the study concludes that although mathematics student teachers may lack the necessary skills to implement differentiated instruction, high-quality teacher education programmes can build their confidence and enable them to effectively manage their classrooms and adapt teaching practices to meet diverse learner needs. Therefore, the study suggests that stakeholders involved in PSTE programmes should provide continuous guidance and constructive feedback to help student teachers overcome challenges and improve their teaching practices. Expectations of big data across various fields, including education, are increasing. However, uncovering valuable insights from big data is like locating a needle in a haystack, and it is difficult for teachers to use educational big data on their own. This study aimed to understand changes in student participation rates during classes and teachers' teaching styles by analyzing educational big data. In the analysis, data from 120 students and two mathematics class teachers at a public junior high school in Japan were used. We applied the pruned exact linear time (PELT) algorithm to automatically identify significant changes in student participation during class. Based on the information obtained, we analyzed the interaction logs of teachers' e-book readers and clarified the relationship between student participation rates and teacher behavior patterns. Change point detection using the PELT algorithm showed a high F1-score of 0.7929, indicating good overall performance. We also investigated whether there was a relationship between class differences and teachers' actions and found a statistically significant difference. The results provide clues for improving student learning engagement and teachers' teaching styles, and they are expected to improve the quality of education by automatically identifying notable cases from educational big data. The relevance of the study lies in the necessity to investigate the psychoemotional state of teachers during the transition to remote teaching in universities and its impact on academic performance and emotional state of students. The aim of the research was to develop a theoretical approach to describe the emotional and techno-ontological logic of mathematics teachers during distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact of their emotional state on the learning process. The study involved teachers and students from universities in Ecuador, both private and public. The study observed the behavior of teachers and students, analyzed the use of technology in mathematical activities, and analyzed personal opinions about the learning process of the participants of the study. A digital observation guide and openended interviews were used to collect data. The qualitative analysis program Atlas.ti was used to analyze the data. The program created three categories: andragogical retrotopia of mathematics, emotional scar in teacher preparation, and perceptions of the educational process. As the results of the research showed, there was a deficit of digital professional training of teachers in the university teaching of mathematics. And it was also found that the teacher played the role of a catalyst for the emotional-techno-ontological state of the educational process. As a result of the research work carried out, a theoretical approach is proposed, through which it is possible to avoid the manifestation of techno-ontological logical emotions in mathematics teachers in Ecuadorian universities. This article describes and identifies the personal meanings that the multigrade schoolteacher has in the teaching of the decimal metric system, through the facets of didactic mathematical knowledge. In various investigations supported by this theory, the need to apply the notion of facets or didactic suitability as an instructional process in which teachers are knowledgeable and competent in an academic setting, has been visualized. In this sense, the research is framed in teachers of different areas of knowledge that guide mathematics in which ten teachers participated. The data collection is based on the analysis of a diagnostic test and a semi-structured interview. Using an in-depth case study approach, this study explored the mathematics educational values held by two in-service teachers at the primary and secondary levels in Hong Kong through lesson observations and deep structured interviews. The findings revealed that the primary teacher emphasized fun, flexibility, critical thinking, and coherence, while the secondary teacher prioritized achievement, control, higher-order thinking, and progression. Using Seah and Bishop's five complementary pairs framework, the primary teacher aligned with an activist, relational, relevance, and accessibility perspective, contrasting sharply with the secondary teacher. This reflected a shift in values in response to students' educational stages, revealing the challenges of balancing social expectations and nurturing future science, technology, engineering, and mathematics talent. We discussed the implications for local education reforms, including modernizing assessment methods and curricula, reshaping the social climate, and updating professional development to address these tensions. In this study, we examine two U.S. elementary teachers' use of worked examples, representations, and deep questions in elementary mathematics lessons both before and after a project intervention designed to promote teaching improvement. This intervention was guided by a cognitive construct containing these three aspects, which were demonstrated via cross-cultural video lessons of both U.S. and Chinese teachers. We specifically analyze two teachers (Ann and Bea) who taught first-grade lessons on the topic of inverse relations. Although their lessons were rated similarly in year 1, the rating of their lessons in year 4, post-intervention, demonstrated different patterns of change. While Ann's use of worked examples and representations underwent no significant improvement, Bea spent more time unpacking a single worked example with a representational sequence fading from concrete to abstract (also called "concreteness fading"). Neither teacher showed improvement in asking deep questions. An analysis of the teachers' responses to the project intervention revealed that their video noticing skills and personal takeaways were related to the areas of teaching where they improved. Other factors such as teachers' prior knowledge, beliefs, and textbook resources, also played a role in teaching changes. These findings shed light on a recent endeavor called the "science of improvement" in mathematics teaching, which seeks to document teaching changes and the underlying mechanisms that might induce these changes. Introduction: This study investigates the mechanisms linking students' perceived teacher support with math anxiety, focusing on the mediating roles of the teacher-student relationship and mathematics self-efficacy. Methods: The research was conducted with 401 fifth-grade students in China, utilizing scales for Students' Perceived Teacher Support, Teacher-Student Relationship, Math Self-Efficacy, and Math Anxiety. Results: Findings revealed that student-perceived math teacher support, teacher-student relationship, and math self-efficacy were all significantly negatively correlated with math anxiety. It was notably found that student-perceived math teacher support influenced math anxiety through the chain mediation of teacher- student relationship and math self-efficacy. Additionally, the effect of students' perceived emotional support from math teachers on math anxiety, mediated by teacher-student relationship intimacy, was significant only among male students. Discussion: These results underscore the importance of fostering positive teacher-student interactions and enhancing self-efficacy to reduce math anxiety among primary school students. The study reported on here was conducted to explore four Grade 7 mathematics teachers' understanding of the relationship between the objectives indicated in the CAPS for teaching different topics/concepts and instructional time stipulated for doing so. Seven lessons were studied in 4 primary schools in the Vhembe district of the Limpopo province, South Africa. A constructivist philosophical approach was used. The data collection methods included interviews and classroom observations. The main finding indicates teachers' understanding of instructional time as either a regulatory or a teaching tool. The ability to translate instructional time into social time depends on the level of teachers' curriculum literacy. Consideration of how CAPS objectives could be fulfilled based on the topic/concept to be taught and the stipulated instructional time, influenced the learners' conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and competency in mathematics. The conclusion underscores the importance of instructional time as both an essential authoritative regulatory tool and signal of a pedagogic device and communication required to advance the instructional objectives. This quantitative, non-experimental study explored the relationship between the features of math and science teachers' preparation programs and their graduates' instructional rigor and persistence in teaching. Five math and science teacher preparation programs from across the United States were examined. Six sets of instructional tasks were collected from forty-six recent graduates of these programs to provide insights into novices' instructional rigor, and employment data were collected for thirty-seven of these graduates three to eight years after graduation. Regardless of the program's features, all teachers could design and implement instruction with moderate to high rigor. However, this ability was not the norm. Mixed-effect models suggest the strongest evidence between degree types (bachelor versus post-bachelor) was related to teachers' persistence: novices from graduate programs were more likely to persist in the work. However, no program feature was strongly associated with instructional rigor. Further research is needed to determine if the differences we found in teacher persistence are due to the nature of applicants drawn to particular programs (undergraduate versus graduate) or the program's structure. Future research is also needed to explore the influence of instructional context (i.e., district, school, and department norms for instruction) on math and science teachers' instructional rigor. Science and mathematics teachers face the dual challenge of mastering subject-specific expertise and developing the pedagogical skills necessary for implementing integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) lessons. Research indicates a deficiency in teachers’ pedagogical competencies, particularly in project-based learning (PBL) within STEM context. To address this, the study administered a questionnaire to 245 specialized science and mathematics teachers in Qatar, aiming to examine their competencies and self-efficacy within the realm of technological pedagogical content knowledge. The focus is specifically on its integration with PBL and STEM content. Additionally, the study explores the influence of demographic and contextual factors, including gender, teaching experience, major academic subject, possession of an education certificate, specialization in STEM disciplines, and workload hours, on science and teachers’ competencies and self-efficacy in technology integration when teaching through PBL and STEM approaches. The study’s findings highlight the pivotal role of gender, formal teacher education, and the unique expertise of teachers. Surprisingly, teaching experience and school level did not show significant differences among science and mathematics teachers. However, gender disparities persist, with male teachers scoring higher in technology integration, necessitating ongoing research. Discipline-specific differences underscore the need for tailored professional development. While workload does not significantly impact technology integration, a supportive school culture is crucial, especially in secondary schools. Lesson planning is important in an educational setting. This study assessed how Rwandan tutors and teachers prepare lesson plans (LPs) before implementing them in a classroom. We employed a current and standard lesson plan analysis protocol (LPAP) developed by researchers from Rwanda to code data. We collected a representative sample of 119 mathematics and science subject lesson plans from teacher training college tutors and secondary school teachers for analysis to serve its usability. The study results revealed that only 11% of collected LPs were teachable as they were rated in both a good (70-79% scores) and very good (80-89% scores) range of LPAP interpretation. It was also found that the special education needs, lesson approaches, and lesson evaluation components got low mean scores (below 50%). These components were not given appropriate attention in developed LPs. Therefore, this study suggests that tutors and teachers build a quality lesson plan based on the standard LPAP. This article is a self-narrative of our 18-year research into the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK)-guided professional development of teachers in ICT-enhanced mathematics learning. Using autoethnography as the methodology to elucidate our transformative personal evolution in implementing the TPACK model, we describe how we conceptualized and enacted the TPACK framework across three distinct phases of our research trajectory. In the first phase, our efforts focused on offering afternoon seminars and workshops on using educational software. Mathematics teachers attended the seminars and workshops voluntarily. In the second phase, we concentrated on designing programs guided by the principles of adult education, which emphasize the importance of learner autonomy and relevance, and socio-constructivist views of teacher professional growth, which stress the role of collaboration and reflection in learning. In the final phase, we adopted a systemic, school-based approach to investigating and expanding TPACK for mathematics and other STEM/STEAM teachers. At the end of each phase's description, we delve into the profound lessons learned and how these led to a paradigm shift, expanding our perspective on TPACK as practitioners and researchers. The purpose of this research was to identify the need for gender equality education. For this purpose, the views of mathematics, science, and information technology teachers on the current situation of gender equality in schools were determined. In addition, the awareness of sixth, seventh and eighth grade middle school students on gender equality was examined. This study was a descriptive research conducted in a qualitative context. In data collection, an interview form on teachers' views and a written view form on students' awareness about gender equality were used. Research data were collected in the spring semester of the 2017-2018 academic year. This study presents a comprehensive overview of computational thinking (CT) research trends in mathematics learning from 2009 to 2023. To reach this aim, a bibliometric approach was used in this study to analyze the publication distribution pattern on CT focused on the following categories: research development, the most productive journals and countries, highly cited references, topic network, and thematic evolution map. A total of 276 articles retrieved from the Scopus database were analyzed and visualized through the Bibliometrix analysis package from R and VOSviewer software. The finding shows that since 2009, CT has been the subject of mathematics learning research, which has grown significantly since 2013. Regarding total publication in CT, Education and Information Technologies contributes as the most productive journal, and the United States places first among all countries. The article 'computational thinking' appears as the most widely referenced source. Moreover, the frequent topics network with CT are the integration of CT with programming, STEM, and coding. This result is analyzed further by the thematic evolution map showing CT research in STEM education, including mathematics, exhibits promising prospects for future development. This article offers an analysis of preservice mathematics teachers' knowledge and understanding of assessment literacy. We draw from Abell and Siegel's (2011) notion of assessment literacy to explain the salient component of assessment literacy among the preservice teachers who participated in this study. Semi-structured and group interviews were used to generate data from three second-year preservice teachers enrolled in a Diploma in Education program. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. While the findings revealed that preservice teachers perceive assessment as an ongoing process aimed at gathering information about students' learning, their knowledge is grounded more on summative assessment. Furthermore, it was noted that preservice teachers view assessment as generic and not specific to mathematics teaching. In terms of conducting assessments, preservice teachers concede that time aligns with purpose and that administering assessments is solely the instructor's responsibility. Based on the findings, we concluded that preservice mathematics teachers have limited knowledge and understanding of assessment literacy. Thus, it is recommended that teacher educators pay particular attention to the evolution of preservice mathematics teachers' conception of assessment literacy. It is also recommended that preservice mathematics teachers' classroom assessment practices be investigated to ascertain how their assessment knowledge informs their classroom practices.
