This study examined spatial and temporal thermal performance and energy consumption. The temperature distribution in the running period was monitored in test rooms with integrated electric- and hot water-heated floors. The short- and long-term energy consumption of the two heating systems were recorded and compared. The results indicated that the integrated electric heating system generated higher temperatures for indoor air and on the exterior surface of the wooden floor than the hot water heating system; meanwhile, the difference in the mean temperatures of the exterior and rear surfaces of the electric-heated floor was 2.44 °C, while that of the hot water-heated test room was 13.25 °C. The efficient structure of the integrated electric heating system saved 22.97% energy compared to the hot water system after short-term (7 h) charging and reaching a dynamic balance, and it efficiently increased the energy utilization rate to 11.81%. After long-term charging, the daily energy consumption of the integrated electric heating system consumed much less energy than the hot water system every month. The integrated electric heating system saved 62.55% and 34.30% of energy in May and January, respectively, and consumed less than half of the energy the hot water system consumed in the less cold months. Flexible electrothermal heaters have attracted abundant attention in recent years due to their wide applications, but their preparation with high efficiency remains a challenge. Here in this work, a highly stable and bending-tolerant flexible heater was fabricated with graphite nanosheets and cellulose fibers through a scalable papermaking procedure. Its electrothermal property can be enhanced by a hot-pressing treatment and introduction of cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) during the papermaking protocol. The flexible heater may quickly reach its maximum temperature of 239.8 °C in around 1 min at a voltage of 9 V. The power density was up to 375.3 °C cm2 w−1. It appeared to have a high tolerance for bending deformation with various curvatures, and the temperature remained stable even under 100 bending with frequency of around 0.17 Hz. Over 100 alternatively heating and cooling cycles, it worked stably as well. The combined production of electricity and thermal energy (combined heat and power or co-generation) is the most efficient and convenient approach to reduce costs for energy at industrial power plants and district heating plants that use natural gas as fuel to produce thermal energy for various needs. This paper analyses the operational characteristics of the combined heat and power plant, which has been operating since January 1, 2021, at the Voždovac Heating Plant as part of the Belgrade district heating system. The combined heat and power plant consists of three gas engine units with a total nominal electric power of 10 MW and thermal power of 10.1 MW, which use natural gas as fuel. The combined heat and power plant is used for district heating and preparing domestic hot water while electricity is sold to the local electric grid. The analysis in this paper focuses on the plant's operational characteristics: the number of working hours, the total energy consumption and energy production, the efficiency as well as the operational and maintenance costs. Also, the impact of the drastic changes in the prices of natural gas, electricity, and maintenance costs in the last year on the financial profitability of the combined heat and power plant was analysed in particular. Simple Summary: Fluctuations of physiological characteristics play an important role in a living organisms' normal existence and adaptation to environmental conditions. An important feature of oscillations in living systems is their ability to form (synchronization) or break links (desynchronization) with each other. For example, synchronization/desynchronization in the brain's electrical activity plays a role in memory and learning; synchronization changes cause epilepsy and other diseases. The task of quantifying the synchronization of signaling events in cells is currently unsolved. No universal, informative and accurate method has been found for assessing the synchronization of large cell groups. For the first time, we have tested the possibility of applying a mathematical method called bispectral analysis (applied earlier on the whole organism) to assess the coupling of signaling molecules and the level of fluctuations in cells. This method allows for a highly accurate estimation of the connection of oscillations between all pairs of cells in a studied population, the magnitude and frequency of these coupled oscillations, and which cells create and receive a "signal to form a connection of oscillations". We have shown that stress (overheating and excessive glucose concentration) changes the synchronization of oscillations of signaling molecules in cells. The obtained data can be applied in medicine and human economic activity. The oscillation synchronization analysis in biological systems will expand our knowledge about the response of living systems to changes in environmental conditions. This knowledge can be used in medicine (diagnosis, therapy, monitoring) and agriculture (increasing productivity, resistance to adverse effects). Currently, the search is underway for an informative, accurate and sensitive method for analyzing the synchronization of oscillatory processes in cell biology. It is especially pronounced in analyzing the concentration oscillations of intracellular signaling molecules in electrically nonexcitable cells. The bispectral analysis method could be applied to assess the characteristics of synchronized oscillations of intracellular mediators. We chose endothelial cells from mouse microvessels as model cells. Concentrations of well-studied calcium and nitric oxide (NO) were selected for study in control conditions and well-described stress: heating to 40 °C and hyperglycemia. The bispectral analysis allows us to accurately evaluate the proportion of synchronized cells, their synchronization degree, and the amplitude and frequency of synchronized calcium and NO oscillations. Heating to 40 °C increased cell synchronization for calcium but decreased for NO oscillations. Hyperglycemia abolished this effect. Heating to 40 °C changed the frequencies and increased the amplitudes of synchronized oscillations of calcium concentration and the NO synthesis rate. The first part of this paper describes the principles of the bispectral analysis method and equations and modifications of the method we propose. In the second part of this paper, specific examples of the application of bispectral analysis to assess the synchronization of living cells in vitro are presented. To align the buildings sector with the 1.5°C climate change trajectory, enormous improvements in energy efficiency are needed. It is therefore crucial that the tools used to evaluate buildings' energy use undergo robust testing. This paper tests, for the first time, the outcome of the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) and an author-modified version of the Radiant Time Series Method (RTSM), following the Building Energy Simulation Test (BESTEST). The results show that while the validity of the modified-RTSM is slightly superior to that of the PHPP, both tools pass less than 35% of the cases -- necessitating further calibration and challenging the widely-held belief that the PHPP is 'validated'. As the PHPP and the modified-RTSM present a relatively simple and quick way of evaluating buildings' energy performance, calibrating their methodologies so they pass the BESTEST cases could put them at an advantage over the fully dynamic and resource-intensive tools. The increasing use of renewable energy sources introduces significant fluctuations in power generation, demanding enhanced regulatory capabilities to maintain the balance between power supply and demand. To promote multi-energy coupling and the local consumption of renewable energy, integrated energy systems have become a focal point of multidisciplinary research. This study models adjustable sources, networks, and loads within electric–thermal integrated energy systems as energy storage entities, forming virtual energy storage systems to participate in the optimization and scheduling of integrated energy systems. This paper investigates the modeling and control strategies of virtual energy storage systems within electric–thermal integrated energy systems. Initially, it introduces the definition, logical architecture, and technical connotations of virtual energy storage. Next, it models temperature-controlled loads as virtual energy storage systems and compares them with traditional energy storage systems, analyzing their characteristic differences and summarizing virtual energy storage system modeling methods and characteristic indicators. This paper then focuses on the specific applications of virtual energy storage systems in four typical scenarios. Finally, it explores the future development directions of virtual energy storage. The opportunities related to the adoption of synthetic gaseous fuels derived from solid biomass are limited by the issues caused by the peculiarities of the syngas. The aim of this paper is to analyze several possible layouts of hybrid energy systems, in which the main thermal source is the organic fraction of municipal solid wastes. The case of a small community of about 1000 persons is analyzed in this paper. The examined layouts coupled an externally fired micro gas turbine with a waste heat recovery system based on both an Organic Rankine Cycle and supercritical CO2 gas turbines. A thermodynamic analysis has been carried out through the use of the commercial software Thermoflex 31, considering the losses of each component and the non-ideal behavior of the fluids. The results of the numerical analysis highlight that the introduction of a waste heat recovery system leads to an increase of at least 16% in the available net power, while a cascade hybrid energy grid can lead to a power enhancement of about 29%, with a considerable increase also in the energetic and exergetic global efficiencies. In order to understand the application of iot Big data information acquisition for heating control systems, a research on iot Big data information acquisition for thermal storage heating control systems is proposed. This paper first analyzes the shortcomings of the traditional heating system, the heating data is scattered and difficult to collect. The IoT technology is applied to the heating platform through data acquisition, data visualization, data mining, data management and other aspects. Secondly, the application of the IoT in heating system data acquisition is studied, including the types of heating data collected, data acquisition process, data acquisition standards, etc. Finally, this paper takes the energy-saving transformation of 26 boilers in a heating enterprise as an example. The research results show that the boiler efficiency obtained in real time by using the online monitoring system of this project is 95.36%, and the reverse balance boiler efficiency in the paper report of the special inspection office is 94.88%, with a deviation of 1.48%. The application of the IoT technology can obtain the boiler indicators in real time and effectively, and can realize the comprehensive analysis of the monitoring data, and realize the evaluation of the energy efficiency operation state of the gas boiler and the fault diagnosis and early warning. The Qinghai–Tibet plateau, with an average altitude of over 4000 m, has low annual average temperatures and a high demand for building heating. This region's abundant solar energy resources hold substantial practical significance for improving the indoor heat environment and reducing building energy consumption. This paper investigates the impact of orientation and skylight area ratio on building heat load and indoor temperature, using both actual measurement and simulation methods, with a case study of the comprehensive building at Beiluhe Observation and Research Station of Frozen Soil Engineering and Environment (Beiluhe Station), located in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau region. Initially, a model was established using the EnergyPlus 9.4 software, with orientation variables set from east to west in 15° increments, to simulate the variations in building heat load resulting from orientation changes; simulations were then conducted for three different skylight area ratios under the optimal orientation to evaluate their influence on heat load and indoor temperature. The results show that for the architectural style examined in this paper, the optimal building orientation within the region is 30° south by east, with the optimal orientation range spanning from 45° south by east to due south. Heating load is negatively correlated with the skylight area ratio, and beyond a certain threshold, the rate of decrease in heat load diminishes or even stabilizes. Concerning energy waste and rational use, this paper studies the optimal scheduling of day-ahead energy supply and the community's demand with a combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) system in summer. From the perspective of bilateral costs and renewable energy use, this paper examines the impact of energy storage systems integrated into cogeneration systems. The Gurobi solver is used to optimize the residential community's supply and demand sides of the traditional CCHP system (T-CCHP) and the CCHP system with energy storage (CCHP-ESS) under insufficient solar power. Subsequently, two optimal arrangements for energy consumption on the user side under these systems are suggested. In the optimization model, energy storage is added to the T-CCHP system on the energy supply side. On the user side, the energy use scheme is optimized considering the user's comfort. The innovation point of this study is that the optimization of comprehensive energy in the park involves both supply and demand. This paper aims to provide discernment toward establishing a general framework, dedicated to data analysis and forecasting in smart buildings. It constitutes an industrial return of experience from an industrialist specializing in IoT supported by the academic world. With the necessary improvement of energy efficiency, discernment is paramount for facility managers to optimize daily operations and prioritize renovation work in the building sector. With the scale of buildings and the complexity of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, the use of artificial intelligence is deemed the cheapest tool, holding the highest potential, even if it requires IoT sensors and a deluge of data to establish genuine models. However, the wide variety of buildings, users, and data hinders the development of industrial solutions, as specific studies often lack relevance to analyze other buildings, possibly with different types of data monitored. The relevance of the modeling can also disappear over time, as buildings are dynamic systems evolving with their use. In this paper, we propose to study the forecasting ability of the widely used Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network algorithm, which is well-designed for time series modeling, across an instrumented building. In this way, we considered the consistency of the performances for several issues as we compared to the cases with no prediction, which is lacking in the literature. The insight provided let us examine the quality of AI models and the quality of data needed in forecasting tasks. Finally, we deduced that efficient models and smart choices about data allow meaningful insight into developing time series modeling frameworks for smart buildings. For reproducibility concerns, we also provide our raw data, which came from one "real" smart building, as well as significant information regarding this building. In summary, our research aims to develop a methodology for exploring, analyzing, and modeling data from the smart buildings sector. Based on our experiment on forecasting temperature sensor measurements, we found that a bigger AI model (1) does not always imply a longer time in training and (2) can have little impact on accuracy and (3) using more features is tied to data processing order. This paper summarizes the results of a Special Issue focusing on the practical applications of model predictive control and other advanced control methods in the built environment. This Special Issue contains eleven publications and deals with various topics such as the virtual sensing of indoor air pollutants and prediction models for indoor air temperature and building heating and cooling loads, as well as local and supervisory control strategies. The last three publications tackle the predictive maintenance of chilled water systems. Most of these publications are field demonstrations of advanced control solutions or promising methodologies to facilitate the adoption of such control strategies, and they deal with existing buildings. The Special Issue also contains two review papers that provide a comprehensive overview of practical challenges, opportunities, and solutions to improve building operations. The efficient utilization of waste heat from industrial processes can provide a significant source of energy savings for production plants, as well as be a driver of sustainable operations and the abatement of emissions. Industrial waste heat usually is contained in liquid or gaseous outlet streams. Although the possible ways to utilize waste heat are discussed in a wide variety of papers, these either provide only a general overview of utilization options and opportunities or focus on a narrow range of industrial processes. The aim of the present paper is to discuss the practical aspects of waste heat utilization in the European Union so that the reader can gain perspective on (i) the thermal classification of waste heat, (ii) liquid and gaseous waste streams and their typical temperatures for industrial use cases, (iii) the technical, economic, physical, and environmental aspects barring full utilization of the available waste heat, (iv) waste heat sources in various industries, and (v) standardized equipment and technologies applicable to industrial waste heat utilization, including their advantages, disadvantages, and weak points. To optimize the energy supply potential and complementary advantages of distributed energy, this paper focuses on the dispatching optimization of cogeneration virtual power plant considering uncertainty. First of all, wind power, photovoltaic, combined heat and power (CHP) units, electric boilers, and controllable loads are integrated into a CHP virtual power plant. Then, carbon capture and electric-to-gas devices are introduced to realize carbon recycling. Furthermore, quantify the risk of real-time dispatching of virtual power plants through uncertainty scenario generation and conditional value at risk (CVaR) theory, and the multi-objective stochastic dispatching optimization model of virtual power plants is built with the aim at minimizing the operation cost, carbon emissions, and operation risk as the objectives, and the CRITIC weighting method is adopted to solve it. Finally, the calculation results show that: 1) the electric boiler can use wind and photovoltaic power to supply heat for the system, reduce the dependence ofthe virtual power plant (VPP) on the CHP unit, and make the electric output of the unit more flexible. 2) The risk quantification method proposed can fully measure the risk situation in real-time dispatching, arrange the wind and photovoltaic power generation plan and backup plan more reasonably, and enable the VPP to get more benefits while avoiding the risks in real-time dispatching. Due to an urgent need to reduce the fast-progressing climate changes, a rapid, standardized and replicable solution for the infrastructure restructuring of the heat demand coverage of buildings at the district and city levels must be developed. As more and more communities in Europe, especially in Germany, are obligated to have plans for coverage of the heat demand, city planners and energy agencies seek a tool that will help them to design the first drafts of heating network routes, which can supply whole districts and cities with renewable energy. ArcGIS Pro Tools like Least-Cost-Path Analysis (LCPA) and Closest Facility (CF) allow us to find the shortest and "cheapest" way between the heat source and heat consumers in the analyzed areas. Starting from the community level, through the district, county, voivodeship and whole-country levels, the replication of the methods for generating district heating (DH) network infrastructure can be achieved. The proposed LCPA- and CF-based methods help to design the most suitable and efficient DH networks in the analyzed areas. As only a few open-source data inputs, like street networks and building footprints, are needed, the methods can be implemented in all communities in the country of Poland. In view of the prominent and intractable problems of frequent high temperature alarms of the communication equipment and high energy consumption of air conditioners in Zhengzhou communication outdoor cabinets, a temperature control system with heat pipe as the main part and air conditioner as the auxiliary part is proposed in this paper. Due to the serious problems with energy efficiency, carbon emissions, and thermal comfort of rural residences in northern China, an optimization of active and passive heating technologies for rural residences is necessary. In this paper, an optimization for rural residences in northern China is conducted with four objectives: the whole life cycle carbon emission; the annual energy consumption through heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems; the annual cost; and thermal comfort. In addition, the optimization model with active–passive heating technology synergy is resolved by NSGA-II genetic algorithm. The active and passive design variables, including the type of air source heat pump, orientation, the type and thickness of envelope insulation, the layer of window glass, the window-to-wall area ratio, as well as sunspace parameters are preferred to obtain the optimal solution. The results indicate that the optimal solution obtained by the ideal point method gives the most outstanding performance. Compared with the prototype, the optimized carbon emissions in severe cold and cold regions decreased by 56.1% and 54.6%, respectively. The annual energy consumption decreased by 59.7% and 62.2%. Finally, the roof insulation thickness is the most sensitive design variable in Pareto-optimal solution sets. Communication technology has evolved continuously throughout human history, especially recently, for overcoming physical distancing. In addition to visual and auditory senses, the transmission of tactile sensations through the human skin holds significant potential as a novel communication method. In this paper, we propose a flexible heating device that can convey warmth at distances. A pixelated heater was developed by depositing Ag nanowires (NWs) patterned on a thin polyimide substrate. The thermal and mechanical durabilities of the Ag NWs were effectively enhanced using a ZnO film as the capping layer. In addition, we created a multifunctional heater by depositing a flexible thermochromic liquid crystal polydimethylsiloxane film on the heater, providing visual feedback on temperature changes. The resistance variations and thermal characteristics of the multifunctional heater were examined under bending to demonstrate its performance as a flexible heater. The results of this study are expected to extend the applications of this technology from simple wearable devices to multifunctional metaverse devices in various fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electric heaters based on functional materials and innovative designs have been developed for various applications. In this paper, we propose a soft dielectric heater (SDH) using polyvinyl chloride-gel (PVC-gel) as the dielectric heater and hydrogel as stretchable electrodes. Under an AC voltage, the leakage current in the PVC-gel leads to continuous injection and discharge of charges, causing the polarized plasticizers and flexible PVC chains to vibrate and collide, thereby generating heat through dielectric heating. Furthermore, the SDH generates a uniform temperature distribution even under strains up to 400%. Besides, high transmittance over 86% across the visible range renders it suitable for wearable or skin-mountable heaters from an esthetic viewpoint. Its capacitor-like structure achieves a scalable design, enabling extension from a singular cell to a row/column addressable and pixelated array of heaters. This paper presents the results of laboratory studies for the distillation of mercury from depleted coal sorbents produced in gold recovery factories using CIP technology. The mercury content in these materials is more than 1%. The developed technology was tested in a large-scale laboratory on a pilot vacuum sublimation electric furnace with the rheological movement of dispersed material. The use of this equipment makes it possible to demercurize various materials with fairly high moisture (up to 20%). It eliminates the use of an additional technological operation—drying the material in a vacuum drying oven. It has been shown that a high degree of mercury distillation is achieved (more than 99.8%) at 350–400 °C in the reaction space and residual pressure in the system of less than 1.33 kPa, with residual mercury content in the material of less than 0.001% (10 mg/kg), which complies with the European environmental standards. Mercury-free coal sorbents are sent for combustion for the additional extraction of precious metal composites. The proposed vacuum technology is characterized by its environmental safety because the process is performed in sealed equipment, eliminating toxic emissions of mercury vapor into the atmosphere. Ondol is a heating system unique to Korean homes that increases indoor temperatures by supplying hot water through pipes embedded in floor slabs. Known for its comfort and sustained heating advantages, ondol has garnered international interest in countries requiring efficient heating solutions. Given the inherent challenges faced during installation and operation, timely inspection of ondol is crucial due to difficulties in detecting and locating defects in buried concrete pipes, often leading to costly rework and removal. However, specialized inspection systems tailored to ondol pipes remain underexplored. Therefore, this paper proposes a robotic inspection system capable of assessing the conditions of ondol pipelines. We analyze the characteristics of ondol piping to establish system requirements and develop a prototype of a compact capsule-shaped inspection robot tailored for ondol pipe inspection. Subsequent laboratory testing validates system performance and usability, confirming field applications through curvature maneuverability and image reception quality tests. This study aims to motivate advancements in ondol-specific system implementation and performance validation, potentially contributing to the smartification of ondol maintenance practices. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) can be used for accurate heat load forecasting in district heating systems (DHSs). This paper presents an application of a shallow ANN with two hidden layers in the case of a local DHS. The developed model was used to write a simple application in Python 3.10 that can be used in the operation of a district heating plant to carry out a preliminary analysis of heat demand, taking into account the ambient temperature on a given day. The model was trained using the real data from the period 2019–2022. The training was sufficient for the number of 150 epochs. The prediction effectiveness indicator was proposed. In the considered case, the effectiveness of the trained network was 85% and was better in comparison to five different regression models. Renewable energies, such as solar and wind, traditionally suffer from temporal incongruity. Society's energy demand peaks occur at different times of day than the electricity generation potential of a photovoltaic panel or, often, a wind turbine. Heat demand, in particular, is subject to a significant mismatch between the availability of heat (in the summer) and the need for heat (in the winter). Thus, a future energy system design should incorporate underground thermal energy storage (UTES) to avoid this temporal mismatch and emphasize thermal applications. Such a basis of design would introduce new methods of energy arbitrage, encourage the adoption of geothermal systems, and decrease the carbon intensity of society. UTES techniques are becoming increasingly sophisticated. These methods of storage can range from simple seasonal storage for residential structures in a grouted borehole array (BTES), to aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES), deep reservoir storage (RTES) in basins, among others. The method that each of these techniques shares is the use of the earth as a storage medium. UTES can also be characterized for electricity production, but this work largely explores applications in heating and cooling, further limited in scope to sensible heat storage (SHS). Heating and cooling processes—residential, commercial, and industrial—make up large fractions of energy demand in North America. This is also true of other locales. With the increasing concerns of climate change, exacerbated by anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, developers and municipal planners are strategizing to decarbonize building heating and cooling at district scales. This review covers the integration of UTES techniques with thermal energy network (TEN) technology across large districts. Though storage has long been in use for conventional district heating networks, designs are rapidly innovating, indicating broader applications of UTES integration with a TEN is advantageous from both an efficiency and economic perspective. Air-source heat pumps (ASHPs), as an active device, are widely used in building heating and cooling processes. However, in severe cold regions, they face reduced heating efficiency and frosting problems in winter. This paper proposes a new heating solution by coupling an ASHP with passive heating systems. It combines an ASHP with passive sunrooms and heat storage systems for heating. Through software simulations and mathematical modeling, the new scheme is compared and analyzed against traditional ASHP solutions to explore the performance of this scheme in rural houses in severe cold regions of China during winter. According to simulation and calculation analysis, on the coldest day of winter, the coupling scheme can provide approximately 99.41 kWh of heat to the indoors, which exceeds the 86.67 kWh required to maintain an indoor temperature of 20 °C. The system's power consumption is 36.96 kWh, which is 66.88% lower than that of traditional heat pump heating. The study shows that the coupling system of an ASHP and passive heating has a good heating effect in severe cold regions. Recent developments in water-based open sorption thermal batteries (STBs) have drawn burgeoning attention due to their advantages of high energy storage density and flexible working modes for space heating. One of the main challenges is how to improve heat release performance, e.g., longer stable heat output and effective output temperature. This paper aims to explore the heat release performance of sorption thermal batteries based on wave analysis methods. Zeolite 13X is used for the experimental investigation in terms of the relative humidity of inlet gas, system air velocity, and the length of the reactor. The results demonstrate that the optimal stable temperature output time of the sorption thermal battery experimental rig is 80 min, and heat release per unit volume reaches 115.6 MJ for the most appropriate reactor length. Thus, the optimal heat release time of the STB under the condition of various relative humidity and air velocities is 152 min and 182 min, respectively, and the corresponding stable heat release could reach 161.1 MJ and 136.5 MJ, respectively. Microstructural changes in conductive materials induced by electric current treatments, such as electromigration and electroplasticity, are critical in semiconductor and metal processing. However, owing to the inevitable thermal effect (Joule heating), the athermal effect on microstructural modifications remains obscure. This paper presents an approach of utilizing pre-micromachined structures, which obstruct current flow but maintain a thermal history similar to that of the matrix, effectively disentangling the thermal and athermal effects. A duplex stainless-steel material is selected to validate the feasibility of this method. Microstructural characterizations show that the athermal effect, especially the electron wind force (EWF), primarily governs the element diffusion and phase transformation in this study. Moreover, many σ phases (Cr-enriched) are precipitated in the micromachined structures, whereas no precipitation occurred in the matrix, suggesting that the directional EWF disrupts the Cr aggregation caused by Joule heating. Furthermore, we present a critical formula for determining the dimensions of micromachined structures of commonly used metallic materials. The proposed method may serve as an effective and powerful tool for unveiling the athermal effect on microstructural alterations. Understanding the impact of the athermal effect on microstructures is crucial for designing and manufacturing semiconductor and metal materials. This paper presents a micromachined thermal convective accelerometer with low power and high reliability. This accelerometer comprises a heater and two thermistors. The central heater elevates the temperature of the chip above ambient levels while the symmetrically arranged thermistors monitor the temperature differentials induced by acceleration. The heater and thermistors are fabricated on a glass substrate using a standard micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) process flow, and the fabricated sensor is installed on a rotation platform and a shaking table experimental setup to perform the experiment. The results indicate that the sensor has the capability to measure accelerations surpassing 80 m/s2, with an approximate linear sensitivity of 110.69 mV/g. The use of integrated heaters is widespread in silicon photonics for waveguide temperature control. The dynamical behavior of the heaters is important for determining their usefulness for certain applications. There exists ambiguity in the literature when it comes to reporting the thermo-optic time constants of Si photonic devices. Many studies report devices with different heating and cooling times without providing an explanation to this phenomenon. In this paper, a comprehensive theoretical framework is developed for interpreting experimental results. This framework is developed for interferometric devices (Mach–Zehnder-based) and resonant devices (rings). With this framework, the impact of measurement conditions on the obtained thermo-optic time constant can be simulated, and we provide an explanation to the observed difference between heating and cooling time constants. The paper presents a numerical discrete element model of granule consolidation taking into account only the elastic interaction force. Calculation of electric and temperature fields was added to the model. Granules are considered as a set of nodes with links in between. The objective of this paper was to study the sCO2 cycle as a waste heat recovery system for a 180 kW biogas engine. The research methodology adopted was numerical simulations through two models built in different programs: Aspen HYSYS and GT Suite. The models were used to optimize the design and thermodynamic parameters of a CO2 cycle in terms of system power, system efficiency, expander, and compressor efficiency. Depending on the objective function, the sCO2 cycle could provide additional power ranging from 27.9 to 11.3 kW. Based on the calculation performed, "Recuperated cycle at maximum power" was selected for further investigation. The off-design analysis of the system revealed the optimum operating point. This paper focuses on the modeling and analysis of a high-voltage layer heater (HVLH) designed for environmentally friendly vehicles, including electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), through multiphysics simulations that cover electrical, thermal, and fluid dynamics aspects. Due to the significant expenses and extensive time needed for producing and experimentally characterizing HVLHs, simulation and physical modeling methods are favored in the development stage. This research pioneers the separate modeling of thermal boundary conditions for the heating element (TFE) within the electrical domain, enabling the calculation of Joule heating and the analysis of transient conjugate heat transfer. Moreover, this research initiates the application of transfer function modeling for the HVLH component, expanding its use to the broader context of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The simulation results, which include calculations for Joule heating and temperature fields based on input voltage and flow conditions, closely follow experimental data. The derived transfer function, along with the regression parameters, precisely predicts the dynamic behavior of the system. The microwave heating process will involve a variety of physical phenomena, including the distribution of the electromagnetic field in the heating cavity, the heat generated by electromagnetic loss, and the transfer of heat inside the material during heating. In this paper, the simulation software COMSOL Multiphysics 5.6 based on the finite element analysis method is used to establish the microwave heating model of Al2O3/SiC composites and design the pinning structure of the experimental furnace for multi-mode microwave heating. From the uniformity of microwave heating of the sample and the coupling with microwave, the heating characteristics of the sample with different pin spacing, pin radius, and pin insertion depth were simulated and analyzed. The ionosphere can be artificially modified by employing ground-based high-power high-frequency electromagnetic waves to irradiate the ionosphere. This modification is achieved through the nonlinear interaction between the electromagnetic waves and the ionospheric plasma, leading to changes in the physical properties and structure of the ionosphere. The degree of artificial modification of the ionosphere is closely related to the heating energy density of high-frequency pump waves. Due to the high density of neutral constituents in the lower ionosphere and the high frequency of electron-neutral collisions, the energy of heating pump waves will be absorbed and attenuated during the penetration of the low ionosphere, seriously affecting the heating effect. This paper proposes a method to reduce the absorption of ionospheric heating pump waves by releasing electron attachment chemicals into low ionosphere to form a large-scale electron density hole. A model for mitigating pump waves absorption based on SF6 release is established, and the absorption at different frequencies is quantitatively calculated. The propagation characteristics of high-frequency signals in ionospheric holes are studied using a three-dimensional ray tracing method, and the results demonstrate that the chemical release method not only reduces the absorption attenuation of heating pump waves but also forms spherical electron density holes, which exhibit a focusing effect on the heating beam and enhance the heating effect. Clean heating transformation and photovoltaic (PV) promotion gradually have become the keys to realize dual carbon strategy goals. Based on this, the combined application of building-integrated PV (BIPV) systems and air-source heat pump (ASHP) systems has received widespread attention. However, the current combined system still presents problems such as the mismatching in time between PV output and heating load. Therefore, in this paper, a novel BIPV and ASHP coupling system is proposed, and the operation parameters were optimized using low-carbon community as an example. A conventional PV and heat pump (HP) combined system, ASHP heating, and coal-fired heating were employed as the baseline and compared with the novel system. The results show that the optimized system can improve the PV power local accommodation rate by 43% compared with a conventional PV and ASHP coupling system. In terms of economic and environmental benefits, the operating cost of the optimized system is 50% of the cost of the ASHP system. Compared with coal-fired heating system, the annual air pollutant and carbon emissions can be reduced by 92% and 57%, respectively. The system also can improve the stability of power grid operation. In this paper, solar energy is used as the auxiliary heat source of the ocean thermal energy radial inflow turbine, and the thermodynamic model of the circulation system is established. In addition, the ejector is introduced into the ocean thermal power generation system, and the process simulation is carried out using Aspen Plus V12. To address performance attenuation of the radial turbine under varying working conditions, shape optimization of a 30 kW OTEC radial turbine was conducted. Finally, the off-design performance variation in the radial inflow turbine is analyzed in the presence of a solar auxiliary heat source. The results show that the use of an auxiliary heat source can effectively improve the cycle efficiency of the system and is also conducive to the stable operation of the radial turbine. This paper proposes a single-stage direct AC to high-frequency (HF) AC resonant converter based on LLC configuration for induction heating (IH) systems or HF applications. Unlike conventional converters for IH systems, the proposed topology converts the utility frequency to HF AC in a single stage without using a DC link inductor and capacitors and takes the advantages of LLC configuration. Additionally, it improves the power factor to 0.9–1, lowers the THD (3.2% experimentally), and protects against the high-frequency components. An embedded control scheme was designed to keep the HF current oscillating at a resonant frequency, ensuring zero-voltage switching. The operating principle of the proposed topology was investigated using mathematical equations and equivalent circuits. This paper presents an automatic optimization system for the heat source layout of multi-chip modules, referred to as IOS. The system aims to optimize the heat source layout of multi-chip modules through the integration of multiple software tools. The IOS utilizes an optimization algorithm, WINDOW DOS, and other methods to achieve this goal. Initially, two optimization strategies are introduced which are utilized in conjunction with the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II(NSGA-II). Subsequently, a simplified thermal model of the multi-chip module is applied to the IOS. The automatic optimization module is then used to optimize the heat source layout. In the end, we simulated and analyzed the application results. The simulation analysis reveals that when the temperature extreme value index is optimized, the PCB board's transient temperature range falls within [343.14 K, 344.09 K]. Similarly, when the temperature homogeneity index is optimized, the PCB board's transient temperature range falls within [343.39 K, 344.21 K]. Comparing these results with the experience layout, the temperature difference is reduced by 76.36% and 79.60%, respectively. The optimization results demonstrate that the IOS has a significant impact, offering remarkable optimization effects, low cost, high efficiency, and a more uniform temperature distribution. Carbon-textile-reinforced concrete (CTRC) is currently used as a high-performance composite material in the construction industry, comprising concrete and a non-metallic reinforcement. In addition to remarkable material properties such as tensile-load-bearing behavior, durability and density, this innovative material features high electrical conductivity, offering the potential for electrical heat generation within building components. This paper contributes to the field by exploring the unique combination of properties exhibited by carbon-textile reinforcements (CTR) electrically heated up to 80 °C. The impact of the electrical heating of CTR was evaluated by conducting stationary tests on load-bearing behavior. The tests were conducted on two different CTRs: one impregnated with polystyrene, and the other with epoxy resin additionally surface-modified with quartz sand. In order to quantify the influence of individual material parameters, tensile tests were conducted on the components comprising CTR and mortar, as well as the composite CTRC. The analysis focused on electrically heated carbon-textile reinforcements, comparing them through experiments conducted at varying ambient temperatures. This study presents pioneering findings on heated CTRC, determining that electrical heating decreases tensile strength with increasing temperature for the investigated reinforcement materials. The softening of the impregnation materials proved to be a decisive factor. NHR-200-II is a small integrated pressurized water reactor with 200 MW core thermal power. The core heat is transferred to two independent intermediate circuits via fourteen in-vessel primary heat exchangers (PHE), and the heat in the intermediate circuits is transferred to feedwater by two steam generators (SG) in the two intermediate circuits respectively. A passive residual heat removal (PRHR) branch is connected to each intermediate circuit to remove core decay heat under postulated accidents. During normal operation, PRHR branches are isolated by valves while SG branches in intermediate circuits are open. The valves in PRHR branches will be opened and the isolation valves of SG branches will be closed during decay heat removal scenarios. The decay heat removal capacity of NHR-200-II PRHRS could be seriously deteriorated once the isolation valves for SG branches fail to close, which was confirmed in a scaled integral test loop previously. Current understanding of PRHRS's thermal- hydraulic characteristics with possible isolation failure in SG branches is limited. In this paper, the NHR-200-II PRHRS is modeled with RELAP5 considering the case of success and fail to isolate SG branches. A series of numerical simulations are carried out to study the impact of various parameters, such as the initial temperature, the size of the intermediate circuits' header, and the initial flow direction in the intermediate circuits. Oscillatory flow is found when SG branches fail to be isolated under certain parameters combinations. Coordinated load restoration of integrated electric and heating systems (IEHSs) has become indispensable following natural disasters due to the increasingly relevant integration between power distribution systems (PDS) and district heating systems (DHS). In this paper, a coordinated reconfiguration with an energy storage system is introduced to optimize load restoration in the aftermath of natural catastrophes. By modifying the DHS network topology, it is possible to maintain an uninterrupted energy supply in unfaulty zones by shifting heat loads among sources and adjusting the operation of coupled devices. Additionally, energy storage systems with rapid response times are implemented to enhance load restoration efficiency, especially when working in conjunction with multiple energy sources. Tungsten (W) film is increasingly utilized in various microheater applications due to its numerous advantages. These advantages include a high melting point, positive constant temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR), good mechanical stability, and compatibility with semiconductor processes. In this paper, deposition parameters for enhancing the properties of W film were investigated, and an optimized microheater was fabricated. It was found that the deposition temperature and pressure can modify the TCR to be negative or positive and the crystalline phase of W films to be alpha phases or mixed with beta phases. A W film deposited under 650 °C with a pressure of 1 pa has a positive TCR and pure alpha phase crystalline structure. We applied this optimized W film as a microheater in an RF phase-change switch (RFPCS), and the maximum voltage of the optimized W microheater increased by at least 48% in this work. By optimizing the microheater, the phase-change switch can be successfully actuated in both on and off states, demonstrated by the Raman results of the phase-change material. A voltage pulse of 20 V/200 ns was enough to turn the switch off with MΩ, and 11 V/3 μs could turn the switch on with 138 Ω. The optimized microheater and device can cycle 500 times without failure. Featured Application: The results of the study may be useful in exploring the extended capabilities of controlling the operational cycle of a heat pump. Air-to-air heat pumps are used in today's ventilation systems increasingly often as they provide heating and cooling for buildings. The energy transformation modes of these units are subject to constant change due to the varying outdoor air state, including temperature and humidity. When choosing how to operate and control energy transformers, it is important to be able to adapt effectively to the changing outside air conditions. Nowadays, modern commercial heat pumps offer two levels of control flexibility: a compressor with a variable speed and an electronic expansion valve. This combination of control elements has boosted the seasonal energy efficiency of heat pumps. For a long time, cycle control possibilities have been dominated by electronic controls. The authors of this paper aim to present an additional element to the traditional heat pump controls, which provides a third level of control over the cycle. To achieve the objective, experimental investigations of a heat pump integrated into a ventilation unit have been carried out under real-life conditions. The experiments involved varying the operating modes of the unit by adjusting the compressor speed, the position of the expansion valve, and the volume of the system loop. The study examined the performance characteristics of the heat pump and found that the performance of a variable-volume heat pump is comparable to that of a conventionally operated typical constant-volume heat pump system. In addition, the study found that by adding a third level of volume control to the active heating circuit, in combination with conventional controls, the heat pump's heat output range could be extended by 69.62%. The study determined the variation of the heat pump cycle in the p-h diagram with the variation of the loop volume. In the realm of high-tech materials and energy applications, accurately measuring the transient heat flow at media boundaries and the internal thermal conductivity of materials in harsh heat exchange environments poses a significant challenge when using conventional direct measurement methods. Consequently, the study of photothermal parameter reconstruction in translucent media, which relies on indirect measurement techniques, has crucial practical value. Current research on reconstructing photothermal properties within participating media typically focuses on single-objective or time-invariant properties. There is a pressing need to develop effective methods for the simultaneous reconstruction of time-varying thermal flow fields and internal thermal conductivity at the boundaries of participating media. This paper introduces a computational model based on the numerical simulation theory of internal heat transfer systems in participating media, stochastic particle swarm optimization algorithms, and Kalman filter technology. The model aims to enable the simultaneous reconstruction of various thermal parameters within the target medium. Our results demonstrate that under varying levels of measurement noise, the inversion results for different target parameters exhibit slight oscillations around the true values, leading to a reduction in reconstruction accuracy. Heating buildings with solar energy is challenged by the seasonal mismatch between solar availability and heating demand. Thermochemical energy storage is a promising technology to overcome this challenge because of its high energy density. In building applications, space requirement is also an important consideration. Therefore, both the storage space and collector areas are important considerations, with only the latter often being neglected in previous studies. This paper proposes a novel two-stage thermochemical heat pump heating system based on the working pair of NaOH/H2O. We demonstrate that this system can work with a concentration difference (70% wt–30% wt) for the climate in hot summer and cold winter regions in China. The energy storage density based on the discharged solution is 363 kWh/m3. With this solar-driven thermochemical heat pump heating system, 35.13 m2 of collectors and 10.48 tons of 70% wt NaOH solution are sufficient to complete a full charge–discharge cycle and meet the heating demand of a single-family house (winter space heating + DHW: 9370 kWh, summer DHW: 2280 kWh). The theoretical maximum storage for solution (discharged + water tank) is 32.47 m3. Compared with the sensible seasonal storage alternative, the collector area is reduced by 12.5% and the storage space is reduced by 59%, with a possible further reduction through optimization. With the potential to be further optimized for space saving, the two-stage solar–NaOH heat pump heating system is an energy-efficient and space-efficient heating system for buildings in the hot summer and cold winter regions of China. Featured Application: Guidance in the development of phase change materials (PCMs), as well as knowledge towards the design and development of latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) systems. The thermal conductivities of most commonly used phase change materials (PCMs) are typically fairly low (in the range of 0.2 to 0.4 W/m·K) and are an important consideration when designing latent heat energy storage systems (LHESSs). Because of that, material scientists have been asking the following question: "by how much does the thermal conductivity of a PCM needs to be increased to positively impact the design and performance of a LHESS?" The answer to this question is not straightforward as the performance of a LHESS depends on the PCM's thermal conductivity, other PCM thermophysical properties, the type of heat exchange system geometry used, the mode of operation, and the targeted power/energy storage of the LHESS. This paper presents work related to this question through a numerical study based on a simplified 2D model of an experimental setup studied previously in the authors' laboratory. A model created in COMSOL Multiphysics, based on conduction and accounting for the solid-liquid phase change process, was initially validated against experimental results and then used to study the impact of the PCM's thermal conductivity (dodecanoic acid) on the discharging power of the LHESS. The results show that even increasing the thermal conductivity of the PCM by a factor of 50 only leads to a maximum instantaneous power increase by a factor of 2 or 3 depending on the LHESS configurations. The supercritical CO2 power cycle driven by solar as a new generation of solar thermal power generation technology has drawn significant attention worldwide. In this paper, a cogeneration system derived from a supercritical CO2 recompression Brayton cycle is proposed, by considering the recovery of waste heat from the turbine outlet. The absorption refrigeration cycle is powered by the medium-temperature waste heat from the turbine outlet, while the low-temperature waste heat is employed for heating, achieving the cascaded utilization of the heat from the turbine outlet. As for the proposed combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) system, a dynamic model was built and verified in MATLAB R2021b/Simulink. Under design conditions, values for the energy utilization factor (EUF) and exergy efficiency of the cogeneration system were obtained. Moreover, the thermodynamic performances of the system were investigated in variable cooling/heating load and irradiation conditions. Compared with the reference system, it is indicated that the energy utilization factor (EUF) and exergy efficiency are 84.7% and 64.8%, which are improved by 11.5% and 10.3%. In this paper, the experimental results of the thermal sub-system of a reliable and cost-effective polygeneration solar system are presented. This polygeneration system produces heating, cooling, and electricity from solar energy, which is used in an existing test building. Heat is generated in four evacuated tube solar collectors (ETCs). The heat may be used for space cooling through a variable geometry ejector (VGE) heat pump. In order to reduce the mismatches between generation and consumption, two thermal storage tanks were added. The performance of a new thermal storage, with 400 L, able to store both sensible and latent heat, was tested. The heating performances of the test building were assessed. Ejector cycle tests were also performed, and the variation of the cooling coefficient of performance (COP) was calculated for different flow rates. For heating, the results showed that the heat storage was capable of heating the test building for 8 h, with temperatures between 22 °C and 26 °C. The paper examines the heat supply system of the building of the educational building of the National University "Odesa Polytechnic" in intermittent mode. Intermittent heating mode is quite widely used to save costs mainly for autonomous building heating systems. The application of Pontryagin's maximum principle to solving the problem of the optimal load of the heating system during the morning on-top of the room is considered. At the same time, a corresponding optimality criterion is also added. With regard to the intermittent-frequent heating mode, the task of optimal control is formulated as the determination of the optimal control effect during the period of morning heat to achieve a comfortable air temperature in the room tk. The criteria for the study of the efficiency of the load modes of the autonomous heating system in intermittent mode have been determined. The task of optimizing the load modes of the heating system is formulated. Based on the results of solving the optimization problem on the mathematical model, the corresponding daily load schedules of the heating system optimal in terms of energy efficiency were obtained. The effect of limitations on the thermal power of the heating system on the effectiveness of the morning heating of the room in the intermittent heating mode was investigated. The study was performed based on the maximum average daily load of the heating system at a calculated outside air temperature of -15 ºС. Options for using thermal insulation to improve the efficiency of the morning heating of the room are considered. The use of combined thermal insulation of the building (external and internal) is proposed as a way to increase the efficiency of the intermittent heating mode while limiting the thermal power of the heating system. Integrated heating and mechanical rolling forming (IHMRF) has recently been introduced for manufacturing complex curvature hull plates. It fabricates the target curved plate by sequential loading along the multipath. Accurate and efficient prediction of the deformation of the plate is the basis for developing the process planning and ensuring the quality of the forming. The inherent-strain method is ideal for this purpose, but its prediction accuracy needs to be improved. This paper proposes a multipath process-based inherent-strain method (MPISM), which considers the effect of the sequential loading process of the multipath on plate deformation. First, the effect of loading paths near the plate edge was investigated, which in turn clarified the rationale for obtaining the inherent strain only in the plate center. Secondly, a strain correction strategy was established by analyzing the variation pattern of the inherent strain caused by the crossing or proximity of the previous path and the subsequent path. This allowed the effects of the loading process to be taken into account in the elastic analysis. Based on the plate-and-shell theory, the idea of an equivalent inherent strain distribution is also presented. This makes the loading of inherent strains more accurate in the elastic finite-element model. MPISM predictions and experimental results show good agreement. Compared with the thermo-elastic–plastic finite element method, the MPISM substantially improves efficiency while maintaining accuracy. The current state of mixed ionic–electronic conducting ceramic membrane technology presents significant advancements with potential applications in various fields including solid oxide electrolyzers, fuel cells, hydrogen production, CO2 reduction, and membrane reactors for chemical production and oxygen separation. Particularly in oxygen separation applications, optimal conditions closely align with the conditions of oxygen-rich air streams emitted from the anode of solid oxide co-electrolyzers. This paper describes and analyzes a novel integrated heat recovery system based on mixed ionic–electronic conducting membranes. The system operates in two stages: firstly, oxygen is separated from the anode output stream using mixed ionic–electronic conducting membranes aided by a vacuum system, followed by the heat recovery process. Upon oxygen separation, the swept gas stream is recirculated at temperatures near thermoneutral conditions, resulting in performance improvements at both cell and system levels. Additionally, an oxygen stream is generated for various applications. An Aspen HYSYS® model has been developed to calculate heat and material balances, demonstrating the efficiency enhancements of the proposed system configuration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
