Deep reinforcement learning is an artificial intelligence technology that combines deep learning and reinforcement learning and has been widely applied in multiple fields. As a type of deep reinforcement learning algorithm, the A3C (Asynchronous Advantage Actor-Critic) algorithm can effectively utilize computer resources and improve training efficiency by synchronously training Actor-Critic in multiple threads. Inspired by the excellent performance of the A3C algorithm, this paper uses the A3C algorithm to solve the UUV (Unmanned Underwater Vehicle) collision avoidance planning problem in unknown environments. This collision avoidance planning algorithm can have the ability to plan in real-time while ensuring a shorter path length, and the output action space can meet the kinematic constraints of UUVs. In response to the problem of UUV collision avoidance planning, this paper designs the state space, action space, and reward function. The simulation results show that the A3C collision avoidance planning algorithm can guide a UUV to avoid obstacles and reach the preset target point. Simple Summary: Breast cancer is a significant cause of female cancer-related deaths in the US. Checking how severe the cancer is helps in planning treatment. Modern AI methods are good at grading cancer, but they are not used much in hospitals yet. We developed and utilized ensemble deep learning algorithms for addressing the tasks of classifying (1) breast cancer subtype and (2) breast cancer invasiveness from whole slide image (WSI) histopathology slides. The ensemble models used were based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) known for extracting distinctive features crucial for accurate classification. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive analysis of these models and the used methodology for breast cancer diagnosis tasks. Cancer diagnosis and classification are pivotal for effective patient management and treatment planning. In this study, a comprehensive approach is presented utilizing ensemble deep learning techniques to analyze breast cancer histopathology images. Our datasets were based on two widely employed datasets from different centers for two different tasks: BACH and BreakHis. Within the BACH dataset, a proposed ensemble strategy was employed, incorporating VGG16 and ResNet50 architectures to achieve precise classification of breast cancer histopathology images. Introducing a novel image patching technique to preprocess a high-resolution image facilitated a focused analysis of localized regions of interest. The annotated BACH dataset encompassed 400 WSIs across four distinct classes: Normal, Benign, In Situ Carcinoma, and Invasive Carcinoma. In addition, the proposed ensemble was used on the BreakHis dataset, utilizing VGG16, ResNet34, and ResNet50 models to classify microscopic images into eight distinct categories (four benign and four malignant). For both datasets, a five-fold cross-validation approach was employed for rigorous training and testing. Preliminary experimental results indicated a patch classification accuracy of 95.31% (for the BACH dataset) and WSI image classification accuracy of 98.43% (BreakHis). The wrist is one of the most complex joints in our body, composed of eight bones. Therefore, measuring the angles of this intricate wrist movement can prove valuable in various fields such as sports analysis and rehabilitation. Textile stretch sensors can be easily produced by immersing an E-band in a SWCNT solution. The lightweight, cost-effective, and reproducible nature of textile stretch sensors makes them well suited for practical applications in clothing. In this paper, wrist angles were measured by attaching textile stretch sensors to an arm sleeve. Three sensors were utilized to measure all three axes of the wrist. Additionally, sensor precision was heightened through the utilization of the Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) technique, a subtype of deep learning. Rather than fixing the measurement values of each sensor to specific axes, we created an algorithm utilizing the coupling between sensors, allowing the measurement of wrist angles in three dimensions. Using this algorithm, the error angle of wrist angles measured with textile stretch sensors could be measured at less than 4.5°. AI-enabled ECGs have previously been shown to accurately predict patient sex in adults and correlate with sex hormone levels. We aimed to test the ability of AI-enabled ECGs to predict sex in the pediatric population and study the influence of pubertal development. AI-enabled ECG models were created using a convolutional neural network trained on pediatric 10-second, 12-lead ECGs. The first model was trained de novo using pediatric data. The second model used transfer learning from a previously validated adult data-derived algorithm. We analyzed the first ECG from 90,133 unique pediatric patients (aged ≤18 years) recorded between 1987–2022, and divided the cohort into training, validation, and testing datasets. Subgroup analysis was performed on prepubertal (0–7 years), peripubertal (8–14 years), and postpubertal (15–18 years) patients. The cohort was 46.7% male, with 21,678 prepubertal, 26,740 peripubertal, and 41,715 postpubertal children. The de novo pediatric model demonstrated 81% accuracy and an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.91. Model sensitivity was 0.79, specificity was 0.83, positive predicted value was 0.84, and the negative predicted value was 0.78, for the entire test cohort. The model's discriminatory ability was highest in postpubertal (AUC = 0.98), lower in the peripubertal age group (AUC = 0.91), and poor in the prepubertal age group (AUC = 0.67). There was no significant performance difference observed between the transfer learning and de novo models. Machine learning technologies are being integrated into robotic systems faster to enhance their efficacy and adaptability in dynamic environments. The primary goal of this research was to propose a method to develop an Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) that integrates Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), odometry, and artificial vision based on deep learning (DL). All are executed on a high-performance Jetson Nano embedded system, specifically emphasizing SLAM-based obstacle avoidance and path planning using the Adaptive Monte Carlo Localization (AMCL) algorithm. Two Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) were selected due to their proven effectiveness in image and pattern recognition tasks. The ResNet18 and YOLOv3 algorithms facilitate scene perception, enabling the robot to interpret its environment effectively. Both algorithms were implemented for real-time object detection, identifying and classifying objects within the robot's environment. These algorithms were selected to evaluate their performance metrics, which are critical for real-time applications. A comparative analysis of the proposed DL models focused on enhancing vision systems for autonomous mobile robots. Several simulations and real-world trials were conducted to evaluate the performance and adaptability of these models in navigating complex environments. The proposed vision system with CNN ResNet18 achieved an average accuracy of 98.5%, a precision of 96.91%, a recall of 97%, and an F1-score of 98.5%. However, the YOLOv3 model achieved an average accuracy of 96%, a precision of 96.2%, a recall of 96%, and an F1-score of 95.99%. These results underscore the effectiveness of the proposed intelligent algorithms, robust embedded hardware, and sensors in robotic applications. This study proves that advanced DL algorithms work well in robots and could be used in many fields, such as transportation and assembly. The purpose of the study was to assess the performance of readers in diagnosing thoracic anomalies on standard chest radiographs (CXRs) with and without a deep-learning-based AI tool (Rayvolve) and to evaluate the standalone performance of Rayvolve in detecting thoracic pathologies on CXRs. This retrospective multicentric study was conducted in two phases. In phase 1, nine readers independently reviewed 900 CXRs from imaging group A and identified thoracic abnormalities with and without AI assistance. A consensus from three radiologists served as the ground truth. In phase 2, the standalone performance of Rayvolve was evaluated on 1500 CXRs from imaging group B. The average values of AUC across the readers significantly increased by 15.94%, with AI-assisted reading compared to unaided reading (0.88 ± 0.01 vs. 0.759 ± 0.07, p < 0.001). The time taken to read the CXRs decreased significantly, by 35.81% with AI assistance. The average values of sensitivity and specificity across the readers increased significantly by 11.44% and 2.95% with AI-assisted reading compared to unaided reading (0.857 ± 0.02 vs. 0.769 ± 0.02 and 0.974 ± 0.01 vs. 0.946 ± 0.01, p < 0.001). From the standalone perspective, the AI model achieved an average sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV of 0.964, 0.844, 0.757, and 0.9798. Healthcare datasets are becoming larger and more complex, necessitating the development of accurate and generalizable AI models for medical applications. Unstructured datasets, including medical imaging, electrocardiograms, and natural language data, are gaining attention with advancements in deep convolutional neural networks and large language models. However, estimating the generalizability of these models to new healthcare settings without extensive validation on external data remains challenging. In experiments across 13 datasets including X-rays, CTs, ECGs, clinical discharge summaries, and lung auscultation data, our results demonstrate that model performance is frequently overestimated by up to 20% on average due to shortcut learning of hidden data acquisition biases (DAB). Shortcut learning refers to a phenomenon in which an AI model learns to solve a task based on spurious correlations present in the data as opposed to features directly related to the task itself. We propose an open source, bias-corrected external accuracy estimate, PEst, that better estimates external accuracy to within 4% on average by measuring and calibrating for DAB-induced shortcut learning. Distribution shifts remain a problem for the safe application of regulated medical AI systems, and may impact their real-world performance if undetected. Postmarket shifts can occur for example if algorithms developed on data from various acquisition settings and a heterogeneous population are predominantly applied in hospitals with lower quality data acquisition or other centre-specific acquisition factors, or where some ethnicities are over-represented. Therefore, distribution shift detection could be important for monitoring AI-based medical products during postmarket surveillance. We implemented and evaluated three deep-learning based shift detection techniques (classifier-based, deep kernel, and multiple univariate kolmogorov-smirnov tests) on simulated shifts in a dataset of 130'486 retinal images. We trained a deep learning classifier for diabetic retinopathy grading. We then simulated population shifts by changing the prevalence of patients' sex, ethnicity, and co-morbidities, and example acquisition shifts by changes in image quality. We observed classification subgroup performance disparities w.r.t. image quality, patient sex, ethnicity and co-morbidity presence. The sensitivity at detecting referable diabetic retinopathy ranged from 0.50 to 0.79 for different ethnicities. This motivates the need for detecting shifts after deployment. Classifier-based tests performed best overall, with perfect detection rates for quality and co-morbidity subgroup shifts at a sample size of 1000. It was the only method to detect shifts in patient sex, but required large sample sizes ( > 3 0 ′ 000 ). All methods identified easier-to-detect out-of-distribution shifts with small (≤300) sample sizes. We conclude that effective tools exist for detecting clinically relevant distribution shifts. We present a deep learning-based method that corrects motion artifacts and thus accelerates data acquisition and reconstruction of magnetic resonance images. The novel model, the Motion Artifact Correction by Swin Network (MACS-Net), uses a Swin transformer layer as the fundamental block and the Unet architecture as the neural network backbone. We employ a hierarchical transformer with shifted windows to extract multiscale contextual features during encoding. A new dual upsampling technique is employed to enhance the spatial resolutions of feature maps in the Swin transformer-based decoder layer. A raw magnetic resonance imaging dataset is used for network training and testing; the data contain various motion artifacts with ground truth images of the same subjects. The results were compared to six state-of-the-art MRI image motion correction methods using two types of motions. When motions were brief (within 5 s), the method reduced the average normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) from 45.25% to 17.51%, increased the mean structural similarity index measure (SSIM) from 79.43% to 91.72%, and increased the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) from 18.24 to 26.57 dB. Similarly, when motions were extended from 5 to 10 s, our approach decreased the average NRMSE from 60.30% to 21.04%, improved the mean SSIM from 33.86% to 90.33%, and increased the PSNR from 15.64 to 24.99 dB. The F-16 aircraft, widely used by the Polish Army Air Force, requires modifications based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms to enhance its combat capabilities and performance. This study aims to develop comprehensive guidelines for this purpose by first describing F-16 systems and categorizing AI algorithms. Machine learning, deep learning, fuzzy logic, evolutionary algorithms, and swarm intelligence are reviewed for their potential applications in modern aircraft. Subsequently, specific algorithms applicable to F-16 systems are identified, with conclusions drawn on their suitability based on system features. The resultant analysis informs potential F-16 modifications and anticipates future AI applications in military aircraft, facilitating the guidance of new algorithmic developments and offering benefits to similar aircraft types. It is important to achieve the 3D reconstruction of UAV remote sensing images in deep learning-based multi-view stereo (MVS) vision. The lack of obvious texture features and detailed edges in UAV remote sensing images leads to inaccurate feature point matching or depth estimation. To address this problem, this study improves the TransMVSNet algorithm in the field of 3D reconstruction by optimizing its feature extraction network and costumed body depth prediction network. The improvement is mainly achieved by extracting features with the Asymptotic Pyramidal Network (AFPN) and assigning weights to different levels of features through the ASFF module to increase the importance of key levels and also using the UNet structured network combined with an attention mechanism to predict the depth information, which also extracts the key area information. It aims to improve the performance and accuracy of the TransMVSNet algorithm's 3D reconstruction of UAV remote sensing images. In this work, we have performed comparative experiments and quantitative evaluation with other algorithms on the DTU dataset as well as on a large UAV remote sensing image dataset. After a large number of experimental studies, it is shown that our improved TransMVSNet algorithm has better performance and robustness, providing a valuable reference for research and application in the field of 3D reconstruction of UAV remote sensing images. Simple Summary: Early characterization of the isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDHIDH) gene mutation status of glioma is crucial for personalized decision making and prognosis in clinical neurooncological treatment. Based on the known differences in energy metabolism between IDHIDH-mutated and IDHIDH-wildtype gliomas, we assessed physio-metabolic magnetic resonance imaging-based measures along with machine learning for potential reliable presurgical characterization of IDHIDH gene status. Traditional machine learning algorithms and simple deep learning models trained in analyzing physio-metabolic parameters demonstrated the best performance in classifying the IDHIDH gene status of gliomas in independent internal testing. In contrast, external testing revealed that traditional machine learning models trained on clinical MRI data had higher accuracy compared to physio-metabolic algorithms, reflecting differences in data acquisition methodology between the two sites. Our results outline the necessity of independent internal and external testing, thus calling for standardized and robust protocols for clinical MRI-driven AI applications. The mutational status of the isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) gene plays a key role in the treatment of glioma patients because it is known to affect energy metabolism pathways relevant to glioma. Physio-metabolic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enables the non-invasive analysis of oxygen metabolism and tissue hypoxia as well as associated neovascularization and microvascular architecture. However, evaluating such complex neuroimaging data requires computational support. Traditional machine learning algorithms and simple deep learning models were trained with radiomic features from clinical MRI (cMRI) or physio-metabolic MRI data. A total of 215 patients (first center: 166 participants + 16 participants for independent internal testing of the algorithms versus second site: 33 participants for independent external testing) were enrolled using two different physio-metabolic MRI protocols. The algorithms trained with physio-metabolic data demonstrated the best classification performance in independent internal testing: precision, 91.7%; accuracy, 87.5%; area under the receiver operating curve (AUROC), 0.979. In external testing, traditional machine learning models trained with cMRI data exhibited the best IDH classification results: precision, 84.9%; accuracy, 81.8%; and AUROC, 0.879. The poor performance for the physio-metabolic MRI approach appears to be explainable by site-dependent differences in data acquisition methodologies. The physio-metabolic MRI approach potentially supports reliable classification of IDH gene status in the presurgical stage of glioma patients. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been integrated into dentistry for improvement of current dental practice. While many studies have explored the utilization of AI in various fields, the potential of AI in dentistry, particularly in low-middle income countries (LMICs) remains understudied. This scoping review aimed to study the existing literature on the applications of artificial intelligence in dentistry in low-middle income countries. A comprehensive search strategy was applied utilizing three major databases: PubMed, Scopus, and EBSCO Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source. The search strategy included keywords related to AI, Dentistry, and LMICs. The initial search yielded a total of 1587, out of which 25 articles were included in this review. Our findings demonstrated that limited studies have been carried out in LMICs in terms of AI and dentistry. Most of the studies were related to Orthodontics. Various industries, including engineering, media/entertainment, finance, and education, have already reaped significant benefits by incorporating AI systems into their operations. Notably, the healthcare sector has witnessed rapid growth in the utilization of AI technology. Nevertheless, there remains untapped potential for AI to truly revolutionize the industry. It is important to note that despite concerns about job displacement, AI in healthcare should not be viewed as a threat to human workers. Instead, AI systems are designed to augment and support healthcare professionals, freeing up their time to focus on more complex and critical tasks. By automating routine and repetitive tasks, AI can alleviate the burden on healthcare professionals, allowing them to dedicate more attention to patient care and meaningful interactions.
