Digital heritage portal interfaces are generally similar to digital library and search engine interfaces in displaying search results as a list of brief metadata records. The knowledge organization and search result display of these systems are item-centric, with little support for identifying relationships between items. This paper proposes a knowledge graph system and visualization interface as a promising solution for digital heritage systems to support users in browsing related items, understanding the relationships between items, and synthesizing a narrative on an issue. The paper discusses design issues for the knowledge graph, graph database, and graph visualization, and offers recommendations based on the authors' experience in developing three knowledge graph systems for archive and digital humanities resources: the Zubir Said personal archive collection at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore; Singapore Pioneers social network; and Polyglot Medicine knowledge graph of Asian traditional and herbal medicine. Archival boxes are used as a preventive measure to control the microenvironment in museums and archives storages. However, their efficiency in protecting valuable artefacts from fluctuations in relative humidity (RH) is not yet fully understood. In this study, the environmental performance of different archival boxes with different configurations (size, design, presence of holes/paper material, cardboard types, surface modification) was included in the evaluation of internal environment (RH). The effectiveness of archival boxes on reducing relative humidity fluctuations was investigated by testing various properties of boxes and boards, such as air exchange rates (AER), moisture sorption and water vapour transmission rates (WVTR). While most cardboard boxes showed only a limited buffering against the humidity ingress, strategies such as surface modification limited the interaction of a box with the external environment, resulting in a more stable internal environment. Material and box properties, such as moisture sorption, AER and WVTR proved to be useful quantitative tools for assessing the environmental performance of the selected archival boxes. In this paper we discuss the creation of the Stephen Hawking Archive through processes of collaboration, and human and technological mediation. We focus on the production of documents including scientific and popular writings, correspondence and lectures in different media and forms of communication from handwriting, diagrams and typing to word processing and digital communication. We consider these processes to think about what is important in the Stephen Hawking Archive, including where authorship is located, and what this shows about scientific collaboration and communication in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century. We also briefly consider how archivists have mediated the Archive since it was received by Cambridge University Library (CUL) in 2021 through its arrangement and description, and we look forward to developing the Archive in the future, including the possibility of acquiring further digital files to include in the Archive. Although unidentified flying objects (UFOs) have long held the public's attention, most research has been conducted by federal agencies who have typically restricted access to such research by classifying or denying the research altogether.1 As a result, countless researchers have taken it upon themselves to investigate the phenomenon over the decades with some of this research making its way into publicly accessible archives. This study provides a history of UFO-related research and archival collections, through an examination of trends gleaned via an inventory of publicly accessible physical collections. The study found that within North America there are sixty-two unique, non-federal collections spread across universities, museums, public libraries, and historical societies. Twenty-two of these collections exclusively contain UFO research content. Collections were created by those who thought UFOs were misidentified objects (the original federal conclusion) and those who believed that there was more to the phenomenon. In this paper, I follow trails of the auto/biographical turn in the field of gender and science, particularly focusing on women mathematicians' epistolary narratives. The paper emerges from a wider Leverhulme funded project of writing a feminist genealogy of «automathographies», tracing women mathematicians' historical emergence as subjects of scientific knowledge, as well as creators of philosophy and culture. What I argue is that letters are important auto/biographical documents in illuminating women's epistemological and intellectual involvement in the making of scientific knowledge, which included the development of mathematical sciences, but was also expanded in the wider cultural formations of the European modernity. In doing so, I deploy the notion of «epistolary sensibility» as a methodological and epistemological approach to archival research with women mathematicians' letters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the period from the 19th to the mid-20th centuries, colonial Singapore played a central role as an Asian trading hub. From 1965, the Republic of Singapore, as a sovereign nation, attempted to uphold its former colonial position of dominance. The efforts undertaken by the Singaporean elites proved to be highly effective, surpassing even the ideological conflict of the 1960s. This resulted in communist nations like the Soviet Union, China, North Vietnam, and North Korea expressing a desire to establish commercial trade relations with Singapore. In the 1950s and 1960s, North Korea stood out as an Asian nation that had achieved notable industrial advancements. North Korean leaders sought to utilize Singapore as a platform for disseminating its industrial products and economic achievements. The efforts made by North Korean communist leaders can be analyzed through various activities carried out between Singapore and North Korea. In the case of Singapore, its leaders aspired to broaden its trading horizons by establishing connections with socialist nations and adopting the insights gained from North Korean industrialization. Through primary sources of Singapore news articles, North Korean news articles, South Korean diplomatic archives, and CIA archives, this paper focuses on the mutual interactions of Singapore, the trading hub, and North Korea, the industrial estate. In this letter, Elspeth Iralu initiates a time-travelling correspondence with her paternal grandfather, Vichazelhu Iralu, about his dreams for the Naga sovereignty movement. The letter grieves the loss of personal and political archives that were stolen, disappeared, and destroyed through processes of colonization. An often overlooked aspect of New Jersey history is that of the Ku Klux Klan activities throughout the state during the 1920s. Driven by a resurgence of anti-immigration rhetoric, the diversity of urban centers, and the general fears of some white Protestant residents of New Jersey, the Klan targeted immigrants, participated in public demonstrations and parades, hosted social events, and attempted to intimidate Catholic politicians in particular. This paper will examine this aspect of New Jersey history by using underutilized sources like the George Moss Collection at Monmouth University’s Murry and Leonie Guggenheim Memorial Library. The article "Editors' notes: Developing systems to encourage FAIR and secure research data" is the first issue of Volume 48 of the IASSIST Quarterly journal. It features three papers that discuss different aspects of researchers' use of data archives. The first paper analyzes the search strategies of users of a social science data archive and suggests ways to improve their experience. The second paper describes the development of a web interface to make archival materials findable and accessible. The third paper discusses the development of training materials for researchers accessing restricted data through a virtual desktop environment. This article explores the counterhegemonic uses of audiovisual media —such as film, video, and television— by migrant women workers, specifically focusing on the media tactics of self-representation used in the intersectional feminist activism of migrant women workers from the Turkish Republic in the Netherlands from 1975 to 1985. Through comprehensive archival research, it aims to historically contextualise and critically evaluate the archival conditions of this marginalised audiovisual heritage. Drawing on archival presences of extant film and television material as well as archival absences, such as lost and abandoned projects, the paper proposes to reconfigure the ‘audiovisual heritage’ of underrepresented communities at the intersection of race, gender, and class, whose archival presences are contingent, arbitrary, and fragmented. To address the specific condition of archival paucity concerning the audiovisual heritage of migrant women workers, the paper concludes with the new perspectives opened by a feminist media historiography of open questions, critical fabulation, and counterfactual speculation.

This paper presents an analytical framework for evaluating the impact of the two main processes identified in Madrid timber-framed courtyard buildings reinforcing the courtyard's crucial role in architectural heritage sustainability: their development caused dwellings to darken (1737–1950), and the existing challenge is to open new patios according to the listed buildings' protection policy. Critical findings in archival research and existing building assessments led to completed data collection and analysis. When exploring construction expansion, from the house towards the collective prototype around a gradually reduced patio and dwelling darkening (1737–1786), buildings resulted in open, semiopen, underlighted and closed designs. Study area on-site assessment uncovered the transition from the older low-rise type (1–3) floors to the modern closed model of up to (4–6) storeys. Construction enlargements, consequently reducing original green areas and courtyards, call for reversing that process or formulating a new strategy. It debates the partial demolition of listed buildings in upgrades and its agreement with the needed "blue courtyard" strategy (PGOUM), resulting from joining new rear individual patios to create a communal building block courtyard. This paper presents an improved metaheuristic technique inspired by the foundational concepts of the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm adapted to deal with multi-objective optimization challenges. Our approach combines the main ideas of ABC with a non-dominated sorting strategy including aspects of Pareto dominance, crowding distance, and greedy selection method. Furthermore, the chosen non-dominated solutions are archived in a repository with a static size. The presented approach, multiobjective artificial bee colony (MOABC), is compared to other state-of-theart algorithms including the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA II) and the multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO). MOABC and selected algorithms from the literature are applied to five zitzler-deb-thiele (ZDT) Multi-objective benchmark functions. Then three key metrics are employed for performance evaluations: generational distance (GD), spread (SP), and hypervolume (HV). Introduction. Queer independent archives play a significant role in their communities, preserving and providing access to narratives that might otherwise be lost. Queer archives are assumed to be homogenous and thus representative, although some queer communities are not visible. Collaborations with GLAM institutions and universities have become more prevalent as the importance of supporting independent archives is recognised. Nevertheless, for many queer archives and their communities retaining autonomy in such collaborations is vital. Method. These issues were explored from the perspective of New Zealand's three queer independent archives through six semi-structured interviews conducted with representatives from each archive. Analysis. The analysis revealed a range of institutional collaborations, reflecting the needs and situation of each archive. Employing different collecting approaches to broaden community representation and record queer life experiences were priorities for the queer archives although with varying degrees of success. Conclusion. This paper highlights some of the challenges faced by queer archives regarding representation and visibility and how institutional collaborations could prove beneficial. Conversely, there may be drawbacks for queer archives, particularly during renegotiations, when power imbalances might become evident. When dealing with Constrained Multi-objective Optimization Problems (CMOPs) and struggling to enhance feasibility, convergence and diversity, the researchers of Constrained Multi-objective Optimization Evolutionary Algorithms (CMOEAs) gravitate toward feasibility or take precedence to preserve well-converged solutions ignoring diversity in the past. To compensate for the defects, the paper proposes CMOEA-MSWA to guide the search of infeasible regions by coordinated strategy of archive and weight vectors. Firstly, the archive carrying the information of population diversity updates the weight vectors. Secondly, the updated weight vectors perpetuate the diversity information to the search of infeasible regions. The circular effects between strategies promote the detection of infeasible solutions with good objectives and exhibit competitive performance in terms of spread and evenness. To testify the versatility the CMOEA-MSWA in enhancing diversity, the comprehensive performance is evaluated firstly and the diversity analysis of the CMOEA-MSWA is carried out on four benchmark suites with 34 test instances, where the number of objectives for some of test problems is scaled from three to five. In comparison with five state-of-the-art CMOEAs, the proposed algorithm yields highly competitive performance in diversity on different types of CMOPs. On 22 May 2021, an earthquake (98.3° E and 34.59° N) struck Maduo town in Qinghai province, occurring along a relatively obscure secondary fault within the block. We utilized 105 archived Sentinel-1A/B acquisitions to investigate the coseismic deformation and the evolution of postseismic displacements in both the temporal and spatial domains, as well as the associated dynamic mechanisms of the 2021 Maduo earthquake. The interference fringes and coseismic deformation revealed that the primary feature of this event was the rupture along a left-lateral strike-slip fault. The released seismic moment was close to 1.88 ×   10 20   N · m , which is equivalent to an Mw 7.45 event. Simultaneously, the maximum coseismic slip reached approximately 4 m along the fault plane. The evolution of postseismic displacements in both the temporal and spatial domains over 450 days following the mainshock was further analyzed to explore the underlying physical mechanisms. Generally, the patterns of coseismic slip and afterslip were similar, although the postseismic displacements decayed rapidly over time. The modeled afterslip downdip of the coseismic rupture (at depths of 15–40 km) effectively explains the postseismic deformation, with a released moment estimated at 4.57 ×   10 19   N · m (corresponding to Mw 7.04). Additionally, we found that regions with high coseismic slip tend to exhibit weak seismicity, and that afterslip and aftershocks are likely driven by each other. Finally, we estimated the Coulomb Failure Stress changes ( Δ C F S ) triggered by both coseismic rupture and aseismic slip resulting from this event. The co- and postseismic Δ C F S show similar patterns, but the magnitude of the postseismic Δ C F S is much lower ( ≤ 0.01 MPa). We found that Δ C F S notably increased on the Yushu segment of the Garze-Yushu-Xianshuihe Fault (GYXF), as well as the Maqin–Maqu and Tuosuo Lake sections of the East Kunlun Fault (EKF). Therefore, we infer that these fault segments may have a higher potential seismic risk and should be carefully monitored in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large Language Models (LLMs) and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems offer a new paradigm for querying and retrieving information, making the resource recovery processes more efficient and accurate due to their ability to learn and generate responses based on vast knowledge databases. This paper aims to demonstrate these systems in a simplified form to initiate a scientific discussion on the possibility of integrating these technologies into archival and bibliographic resource retrieval systems, and more broadly, into cultural heritage management.

Finally, in 2024, a unique tool for consulting the Calamandrei archives sees the light of day, thanks to the digitization of the fonds held at institutions and foundations located in Florence, Rome, Trento and Montepulciano. For the time being, the correspondences, but the project Kaleodoscope of papers, launched in 2009, continues on the entire documentary heritage, allowing valuable cross-fertilization to scholars and full accessibility to the public.

Constrained multi-objective optimization problems (CMOPs) are commonly encountered in engineering practice. The key to effectively solving these problems lies in achieving a timely balance between convergence, diversity, and feasibility during iterations. Furthermore, the appropriate utilization of infeasible solutions is crucial for identifying potential feasible regions. In order to accomplish this comprehensive objective, we propose a novel dual-stage constrained multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (CMOEA) called NACMOEA in this paper. It can be characterized by the following features: 1) Introducing a novel niche-based individual selection and infeasible solution utilization strategy to enhance convergence, diversity, and feasibility. 2) Presenting a cooperative search strategy assisted by dual archives to approximate the constrained Pareto front (CPF) from both feasible and infeasible perspectives, thereby improving the efficiency of obtaining the complete CPF. 3) Designing a new stage switch method based on non-dominant coverage rate to ensure proper completion of search stage switching. Extensive experiments demonstrate that NACMOEA exhibits competitive comprehensive performance when compared with other advanced CMOEAs. • The search process of the proposed NACMOEA is divided into two stages, where a new dual archive collaboration strategy is developed iteratively. • A niche-based environmental selection and an infeasible individual utilization strategy are designed to better balance the performance. • A novel non-dominant coverage rate metric is developed to facilitate appropriate switching in the search stage. • The proposed NACMOEA performs well compared to other advanced algorithms on various complex CMOP test problems. The aim of this article is to elaborate on the overlooked strategy of historical ethnography. Drawing from the literature and sharing vignettes from my research at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees archive, I advance in two stages. First, by reviewing key works, I provide an overview of historical ethnography, focusing mainly on its distinct characteristics: The historical reach and reliance on a wide range of materials. I also present the inductive-deductive debate to consider the role of theory. Then I provide informed reflections about the different research stages: Before, during, and after leaving the archival field. Becoming immersed in the subject matter prior to the actual empirical examination opens the path to the archives and to a meaningful data collection endeavor. In turn, informed decisions, rather than luck, fuel the ongoing movement between data collection and analysis. Lastly, acknowledging the interpretive mindset involved with thinking ethnographically, I present indexing and temporal coding as helpful strategies for organizing a large corpus of historical data. From the beginning of European overseas expansion in the fifteenth century, religious missions occupied an important place in the internal organisation of colonial empires. Their contribution to the ideological structuring of imperialism and the interaction with local populations is undeniable. With the emergence of the new imperialism and the scramble for Africa (after the 1870s), the missions, often anticipating the colonial political and administrative presence, enhanced their role as advocates of Europe's "civilising mission", above all through the education of the colonised peoples. For Portuguese decision-makers, the religious missions, with a multi-century tradition, had an important role in defending territorial claims overseas and promoting the empire's nationalisation. However, the lack of national missionaries, Christianity's inter-confessional competition in the nineteenth century and the emergence of international legal rules protecting missionary activities hindered Portugal's strategies. Using sources from several archives (in Lisbon, the Vatican, and elsewhere) to emphasise the role of a transnational missionary staff and the international law of missions, this text intersects these aspects, examining their convergence in the controversial case of the exit and replacement of Jesuit missionaries in Mozambique in 1910–1911, to demonstrate the need to look at the missionary issues in the Portuguese overseas domains from perspectives that go beyond nation and empire. A new set of observations has been compiled for tsunamis occurring in Greece and in the surrounding areas from 1900 to 2023. A variety of information sources has been collected and examined, including scientific and press reports, books, eyewitness accounts, pictorial and video material, and tide-gauge records. New material was also collected during our field surveys in the islands of Cephalonia, Karpathos, and Kos. Our investigation included 26 distinct events and revealed several tsunamis. The majority of them have remained unknown so far in the tsunami community. Our compilation also included little-known events for which further documentation has been provided. Among others, of particular importance is the collection of new information about the well-known tsunami associated with the 9 February 1948 large earthquake in Karpathos Island as well as the unknown so far series of local but powerful tsunamis generated during the seismic crisis of very strong earthquakes that destroyed the Ionian islands during August 1953. The new observational material collected is significant for the enrichment of existing tsunami catalogs with positive implications for better understanding the tsunami generation mechanisms and the assessment of tsunami hazards and risks.
