Ecosystems generate a wide range of benefits for humans, including some market goods as well as other benefits that are not directly reflected in market activity 1 . Climate change will alter the distribution of ecosystems around the world and change the flow of these benefits 2,3 . However, the specific implications of ecosystem changes for human welfare remain unclear, as they depend on the nature of these changes, the value of the affected benefits and the extent to which communities rely on natural systems for their well-being 4 . Here we estimate country-level changes in economic production and the value of non-market ecosystem benefits resulting from climate-change-induced shifts in terrestrial vegetation cover, as projected by dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs) driven by general circulation climate models. Our results show that the annual population-weighted mean global flow of non-market ecosystem benefits valued in the wealth accounts of the World Bank will be reduced by 9.2% in 2100 under the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway SSP2-6.0 with respect to the baseline no climate change scenario and that the global population-weighted average change in gross domestic product (GDP) by 2100 is -1.3% of the baseline GDP. Because lower-income countries are more reliant on natural capital, these GDP effects are regressive. In a context marked by the intensification of climate change as well as an increase in the frequency and intensity of violent conflicts in Africa, this paper analyses the effects of vulnerability to climate change on conflict through the channel of migratory movements. Given the complex causal relationships between the variables, and to distinguish between their direct and indirect effects on conflicts, we employ structural equation modeling on a sample of 37 African countries observed between 1995 and 2017. The results show that vulnerability to climate change has both direct and indirect negative effects on internal conflict in Africa. An increase in vulnerability to climate change reduces the net stock of international migrants; while the net stock of migrants increases internal conflict. These effects are robust regardless of the components of the climate change vulnerability index considered and vary, however, according to the official language spoken and the level of development. In English-speaking and low-developing countries, the effects of climate change vulnerability on conflict remain negative, while in French- and Arabic-speaking as well as in more developed African countries, climate change vulnerability indirectly increases conflict through migration.In a given territory, the implementation of specific adaptation measures helps to reduce the level of vulnerability to climate change. Furthermore, the increase in conflicts caused by a reduction in vulnerability to climate change can be mitigated by a decrease in migratory movements through a better allocation of natural resources such as arable land and an increase in gross domestic product per capita. The demand for electricity is soaring, propelled not only by population and GDP growth but also the pressing effects of climate change. This study seeks to address the uncertainties surrounding future electricity demand by projecting monthly consumption in Florida, USA, taking into account diverse climate scenarios and their potential impacts. Our approach involves utilizing the degree-day method and constructing an energy consumption regressionmodel grounded in historical data. Key variables, including population, employment, GDP, electricity prices, temperature, and daylight hours, are systematically analyzed. This model acts as the fundamental basis for forecasting future electricity needs in residential, commercial, and industrial sectors across the state of Florida up to the year 2050, considering different climate scenarios. Under the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 scenario, the residential sector foresees a substantial 63% increase in electricity demand from 2001-2019 to 2050. Under the more extreme RCP 8.5 scenario, this surge climbs to 65%. Meanwhile, the commercial and industrial sectors are expected to witness a 47% and 54% upswing in demand under RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5, respectively. Intriguingly, heightened demand for cooling during scorching summers outweighs the reduced need for heating in winter, particularly in the residential sector. The current renewable energy policies fall short of addressing the impending climate-driven surge in electricity demand. To combat this, our recommendation is the implementation of a Renewable Portfolio Standard, aimed at significantly enhancing the proportion of renewables in Florida's electricity mix. This paper concludes with a set of crucial policy recommendations, imperative for steering a sustainable transition to renewable energy and effectively managing the impacts of extreme heat on people's lives. This paper aims to analyze the relationship between agricultural methane and nitrous oxide emissions as a function of per capita gross domestic product (GDP) and its quadratic term in 26 Latin American and Caribbean countries (1990-2019). It also considers the stock of foreign investment to test the polluting paradise hypothesis, agricultural land (AL), and, additionally, methane for nitrous function. The study comprised unit root and cointegration tests. Coefficients were estimated by using fully modified least squares (FMOLS), correlated common effects (CCE), and augmented mean group (AMG). Results by FMOLS show statistical evidence of an environmental Kuznets curve in the set of countries for methane and support the polluting paradise hypothesis. However, results from CCE and AMG show the opposite. For nitrous oxide, FMOLS confirms a U-shaped curve. The above supports a joint environmental policy for both gases, where AL is a key element. The previous results must be corroborated with other methods and the studies extended to other countries over time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vegetation, being a core component of ecosystems, is known to be influenced by natural and anthropogenic factors. This study used the annual mean Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) as the vegetation greenness indicator. The variation in NDVI on Hainan Island was analyzed using the Theil–Sen median trend analysis and Mann–Kendall test during 2000–2019. The influence of natural and anthropogenic factors on the driving mechanism of the spatial pattern of NDVI was explored by the Multiscale Weighted Regression (MGWR) model. Additionally, we employed the Boosted Regression Tree (BRT) model to explore their contribution to NDVI. Then, the MGWR model was utilized to predict future greenness patterns based on precipitation and temperature data from different Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) scenarios for the period 2021–2100. The results showed that: (1) the NDVI of Hainan Island forests significantly increased from 2000 to 2019, with an average increase rate of 0.0026/year. (2) the R2 of the MGWR model was 0.93, which is more effective than the OLS model (R2 = 0.42) in explaining the spatial relationship. The spatial regression coefficients of the NDVI with temperature ranged from −10.05 to 0.8 (p < 0.05). Similarly, the coefficients of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) with the NDVI varied between −5.98 and 3.28 (p < 0.05); (3) The natural factors played the most dominant role in influencing vegetation activities as a result of the relative contributions of 83.2% of forest NDVI changes (16.8% contributed by anthropogenic activities). (4) under SSP119, SSP245, and SSP585 from 2021 to 2100, the NDVI is projected to have an overall decreasing pattern under all scenarios. This study reveals the trend of greenness change and the spatial relationship with natural and anthropogenic factors, which can guide the medium and long-term dynamic monitoring and evaluation of tropical forests on Hainan Island. • The extent of flooding in China is greater than in any other country. • Nearly 66% of China's landmass is submerged by flooding. • Financial toll of flooding accounts for approximately 1.42% of the annual GDP. • Various forms of climatic change contribute to flooding. The extent of flooding in China is more significant than in any other country. Our research reveals that approximately 66 % of China's landmass is submerged by flooding, affecting about 50 % of the population. Furthermore, the financial toll of flooding now accounts for approximately 1.42 % of the annual gross domestic product (GDP), which is almost 40 times higher than the corresponding figure for the United States. We have observed that Zhengzhou city in Henan province, which faced a devastating flood in 2021, received a significant amount of rainfall, specifically a total of 552.5 mm within a 24-hour period. The floods in Henan province in 2021 caused considerable damage, including impacting nearly 15 million people, resulting in almost 400 deaths, damaging over 10,000 square kilometers of agricultural land, causing almost $19 billion in economic losses, and leading to the collapse of over 35,000 households and damage to various properties. In a similar manner, the significant flooding that occurred in southern China in 2020 impacted approximately 7.1 million individuals across eight provinces and resulted in 54 fatalities, the collapse of 6,700 houses, and incurred a direct economic loss of US$3.33 billion. We found that rainstorms have significantly increased to 10 % in the last 60 years in China. In this paper, we delved into exploring the existing published articles, reports, and government and authoritative legal texts to analyze the causes and impacts of flooding in China's flood-prone regions and potential mitigation strategies to reduce the repercussions of distressing flood events.
