The star sensor is the most accurate measurement instrument in the spacecraft attitude measurement system, and the accurate centroid of the star point is the basis for ensuring the performance of the star sensor. Currently, the centroid of the gray method is the most widely used centroid extraction method in practice. Systematic errors caused by the centroid of the gray method and random noise in the detector imaging process are the main factors contributing to the deviation of the star centroiding coordinates. Considering the relationship between the point spread function and the pixel gray value, this paper proposes a centroiding method to reduce the star point centroiding error by fusing a priori information and energy distribution. The star charts are first preprocessed using a curvature filter and Gaussian blur to reduce the random noise. Then the complexity of the point spread function is considered, and the pixel gray values are corrected based on a priori information and gray value fuzzy processing. Finally, the symmetry of the one-dimensional energy distribution is used to quickly determine the sub-pixel deviation to get the star centroid coordinates. Through simulation and physical simulation experiments, the method was verified to be effective, and the extraction accuracy met the requirements of high-precision star sensors. The algorithm proposed in this paper aims at solving the problem of star map matching in high-limiting-magnitude astronomical images, which is inspired by geometric voting star identification techniques. It is a two-step star map matching algorithm relying only on angular features, and adopts a reasonable matching strategy to overcome the problem of poor real-time performance of the geometric voting algorithm when the number of stars is large. The algorithm focuses on application scenarios where there are a large number of dense stars (limiting magnitude greater than 13, average number of stars per square degree greater than 185) in the image, which is different from the sparse star identification problem of the star tracker, which is more challenging for the robustness and real-time performance of the algorithm. The proposed algorithm can be adapted to application scenarios such as unreliable brightness information, centroid positioning error, visual axis pointing deviation, and a large number of false stars, with high accuracy, robustness, and good real-time performance. Although the study of X-ray binaries has led to major breakthroughs in high-energy astrophysics, their circumbinary environment at scales of ∼100–10,000 au has not been thoroughly investigated. In this paper, we undertake a novel and exploratory study by employing direct and high-contrast imaging techniques on a sample of X-ray binaries, using adaptive optics and the vortex coronagraph on Keck/NIRC2. High-contrast imaging opens up the possibility to search for exoplanets, brown dwarfs, circumbinary companion stars, and protoplanetary disks in these extreme systems. Here we present the first near-infrared high-contrast images of 13 high-mass X-ray binaries located within ∼2–3 kpc. The key results of this campaign involve the discovery of several candidate circumbinary companions ranging from substellar (brown dwarf) to stellar masses. By conducting an analysis based on Galactic population models, we discriminate sources that are likely background/foreground stars and isolate those that have a high probability (≳60%–99%) of being gravitationally bound to the X-ray binary. This paper seeks to establish a preliminary catalog for future analyses of proper motion and subsequent observations. With our preliminary results, we calculate the first estimate of the companion frequency and the multiplicity frequency for X-ray binaries: ≈0.6 and 1.8 ± 0.9, respectively, considering only the sources that are most likely bound to the X-ray binary. In addition to extending our comprehension of how brown dwarfs and stars can form and survive in such extreme systems, our study opens a new window to our understanding of the formation of X-ray binaries. The question of energy production in stars stimulated an entire generation of young physicists in the 1930s who came to work in this field exploring the fundamentals of quantum and nuclear physics. Their experience and methodologies were essential to the Manhattan Project, facilitating the rapid development of the atomic bomb. The experience and knowledge gained from the Manhattan Project then flowed back to nuclear astrophysics after the war and led to its further development. This paper is motivated by the question that was raised in the film Oppenheimer, which asks whether "a bomb can set the atmosphere on fire?". The crossing number of a graph is a significant measure that indicates the complexity of the graph and the difficulty of visualizing it. In this paper, we examine the crossing numbers of join products involving the complete graph K 5 with discrete graphs, paths, and cycles. We analyze optimal drawings of K 5 , identify all five non-isomorphic drawings, and address previously hypothesized crossing numbers for K 5 + P n , and K 5 + C n . Through a simplified approach, we first establish cr (K 5 + D n) and then extend our method to prove the crossing numbers cr (K 5 + P n) and cr (K 5 + C n) . These results also lead to new hypotheses for cr (W m + S n) and cr (W m + W n) involving wheels and stars. Stellar coronal sources have been observed in the past not only for their astrophysical interest in the field of binary system evolution and interaction but also for their invaluable roles as benchmarks for plasma spectral models and as calibration sources for high resolution spectroscopic X-ray instruments. These include the gratings on-board Chandra and XMM-Newton , as well as the new generation of high resolution capable-detectors recently flown on-board XRISM and planned for the future also onboard the Athena and the LEM missions. In our previous paper exploiting Chandra /HETG observations of the prototypical coronal source Capella, it has been shown that the centroid energies of the many X-ray emission lines detected in the spectrum of this object change as a function of time due to the Doppler modulation within the binary. This is an effect that needs to be corrected while performing calibrations of high-resolution X-ray instruments. In this paper, we extend our previous work on Capella to other known stellar coronal sources that have been observed with the Chandra /HETG (11 objects in total). We measure in several objects clear trends in the velocity shifts along the orbit of the primary star, meaning that in these sources one of the two star components is largely dominating the high energy emission. In a number of systems the trend in the velocity shift is not obvious. This can be ascribed to the fact that both stellar components contribute significantly to the X-ray emission. The properties of galaxies in low-density regions of the universe suggest an interplay between galaxy formation and environment. However, the specific reason why this particular large-scale environment influences the evolution of galaxies remains unclear. This paper examines the properties and evolutionary paths of galaxies within cosmic voids using the Illustris TNG300 simulation. The population of void galaxies at z = 0 has a higher star formation rate, a smaller stellar-to-halo-mass ratio, higher gas metallicity, and lower stellar metallicity in comparison with non-void galaxies at fixed stellar mass. Our analysis shows that these differences are mainly due to the characteristics of galaxies classified as satellites, for which the largest differences between void and non-void samples are found. Although the mean number of mergers is similar between void and non-void samples at a fixed stellar mass, void galaxies tend to experience mergers at later times, resulting in a more recent accumulation of accreted stellar mass. While the mean net accreted mass is comparable for high-mass galaxies, low-mass void galaxies tend to exhibit higher fractions of accreted stars than non-void galaxies. This finding challenges the common notion that void galaxies predominantly experience growth with infrequent mergers or interactions. The simultaneous transmit and receive (STAR) array system provides higher radiation gain and data rate compared to traditional radio system. Because of the various mutual couplings between each pair of transmit and receive elements, it is a great challenge to suppress the incident self-interference power at multiple receive elements, which is usually much higher than the desired signal of interest (SoI) power and causes the saturation of receive links and the distortion of the digital SoI. In this paper, we propose an optimized method for transmit beamforming based on radiation power constraints and transmit power control. Through adaptive transmit beamforming, high isolation between the transmit array and each receive link is achieved, minimizing the self-interference power at each receiving element. This method effectively reduces the self-interference power, avoiding distortion of the SoI digital signal caused by limited-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). Simulation results demonstrate that this optimized transmit beamforming method can achieve more than 100 dB effective isotropic isolation (EII) on a 32-element two-dimensional phased array designed in HFSS, reducing the maximum incident self-interference power at the receive channels by approximately 35 dB, while effectively controlling the attenuation of the transmit gain. We show that Einstein's conformal gravity can explain, simply, and on the geometric ground, galactic rotation curves, without the need to introduce any modification in both the gravitational as well as in the matter sector of the theory. The geometry of each galaxy is described by a metric obtained, making a singular rescaling of Schwarzschild's spacetime. The new exact solution, asymptotically anti-de Sitter, manifests an unattainable singularity at infinity that cannot be reached in finite proper time; namely, the spacetime is geodetically complete. It deserves to be noticed that, in this paper, we have a different opinion from the usual one. Indeed, instead of making the metric singularity-free, we make it apparently but harmlessly even more singular than Schwarzschild's. Finally, it is crucial to point out that Weyl's conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken into the new singular vacuum rather than the asymptotically flat Schwarzschild's one. The metric is unique according to the null energy condition, the zero acceleration for photons in the Newtonian regime, and the homogeneity of the Universe at large scales. Once the matter is conformally coupled to gravity, the orbital velocity for a probe star in the galaxy turns out to be asymptotically constant consistent with the observations and the Tully–Fisher relation. Therefore, we compare our model with a sample of 175 galaxies and show that our velocity profile very well interpolates the galactic rotation curves after a proper choice of the only free parameter in the metric. Cosmological N -body simulations of galaxies operate at the level of 'star particles' with a mass resolution on the scale of thousands of solar masses. Turning these simulations into stellar mock catalogues requires 'upsampling' the star particles into individual stars following the same phase-space density. In this paper, we introduce two new upsampling methods. First, we describe GalaxyFlow , a sophisticated upsampling method that utilizes normalizing flows to both estimate the stellar phase-space density and sample from it. Secondly, we improve on existing upsamplers based on adaptive kernel density estimation (KDE), using maximum likelihood estimation to fine-tune the bandwidth for such algorithms in a way that improves both the density estimation accuracy and upsampling results. We demonstrate our upsampling techniques on a neighbourhood of the Solar location in two simulated galaxies: Auriga 6 and h277. Both yield smooth stellar distributions that closely resemble the stellar densities seen in the Gaia DR3 catalogue. Furthermore, we introduce a novel multimodel classifier test to compare the accuracy of different upsampling methods quantitatively. This test confirms that GalaxyFlow more accurately estimates the density of the underlying star particles than methods based on KDE, at the cost of being more computationally intensive. In Paper-I, we developed a two-phase model to connect dynamically hot galaxies (such as ellipticals and bulges) with the formation of self-gravitating gas clouds (SGCs) associated with the fast assembly of dark matter haloes. Here, we explore the implications of the model for the size–stellar mass relation of dynamically hot galaxies. Star-forming sub-clouds resulting from the fragmentation of the turbulent SGC inherit its spatial structure and dynamical hotness, producing a 'homologous' relation, |$r_{\rm f}\approx \, 100\, r_{\rm bulge}$|⁠ , between the size of a dynamically hot galaxy (⁠|$r_{\rm bulge}$|⁠) and that of its host halo assembled in the fast regime (⁠|$r_{\rm f}$|⁠), independent of redshift and halo mass. This relation is preserved by the 'dry' expansion driven by dynamical heating when a galaxy becomes gas-poor due to inefficient cooling, and is frozen due to the stop of bulge growth during the slow assembly regime of the halo. The size–stellar mass relation is thus a simple combination of the galaxy–halo homology and the non-linear stellar mass–halo mass relation. Using a set of halo assembly histories, we reproduce all properties in the observed size–mass relation of dynamically hot galaxies, including the flattening in the low-mass end and the upturn in the massive end. The prediction matches observational data currently available to |$z \approx 4$|⁠ , and can be tested in the future at higher z. Our results indicate that the sizes of dynamically hot galaxies are produced by the dissipation and collapse of gas in haloes to establish SGCs in which stars form. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a comprehensive multiwavelength investigation of the intermediate-age open cluster NGC 1912. We identified 401 member stars for NGC 1912 using K-nearest neighbour and Gaussian Mixture Model machine learning techniques. The fundamental parameters determined for the cluster are metallicity (z) = 0.0141 |$\pm$| 0.0006, log(age) = 8.519 |$\pm$| 0.040, binary fraction (⁠|$b_{\text{frac}}$|⁠) = 0.445 |$\pm$| 0.035, visual extinction (⁠|$A_V$|⁠) = 0.864 |$\pm$| 0.033 mag, total-to-selective extinction ratio (⁠|$R_V$|⁠) = 3.007 |$\pm$| 0.096, distance = 1096 |$\pm$| 15 pc. The central density (⁠|$\rho _o$|⁠), core radius (⁠|$r_c$|⁠), tidal radius (⁠|$r_t$|⁠), and background density (⁠|$\rho _{\mathrm{bg}}$|⁠) for the cluster are obtained as 0.643 |$\pm$| 0.067 stars arcmin |$^{-2}$| , 7.743 |$\pm$| 0.784 arcmin, 84.633 |$\pm$| 7.188 arcmin, and 0.001 |$\pm$| 0.000 stars arcmin |$^{-2}$| , respectively. Dynamical mass segregation study revealed a concentration of some apparently massive stars towards the cluster centre. Polarimetric analysis of 90 stars in |$BVR_cI_c$| wavelength bands revealed that the observed polarization in NGC 1912 is not solely attributed to interstellar dust. The Galactic magnetic field is dominant in this region. Dust grain sizes within the intracluster region are found to be relatively smaller than that of the general ISM. The extinction map revealed the existence of a potential 'interstellar bubble' located close to the cluster region. Towards the periphery of the probable bubble region, which displays an ovoid-like geometry, 16 probable young stellar objects have been detected, suggesting the ongoing triggering of secondary star formation events in this region. It is well known that stars are subject to radial migration, i.e. over time, they move away from their birth location. This dynamical process tends to mix different stellar populations and hence hinders the determination of the true chemical evolution of a galaxy (e.g. metallicity gradients). One way to account for radial migration is to infer stellar birth radii for individual stars. Many attempts to do so have been performed over the last few years, but are limited to the Milky Way, as computing the birth position of stars requires precise measurements of stellar metallicity and age for individual stars that cover large Galactic radii. Fortunately, recent and future surveys will provide numerous opportunities for inferring birth radii for external galaxies such as the LMC. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of doing so using the NIHAO cosmological zoom-in simulations. We find that it is theoretically possible to infer birth radii with a ∼25 per cent median uncertainty for individual stars in galaxies with i) orderliness of the orbits, |$\langle v_\phi \rangle /\sigma _{v} > 2 $|⁠ , ii) a dark matter halo mass greater or equal to approximately the LMC mass (∼2 × 1011  |${\rm M}_\odot$|⁠), and iii) after the average azimuthal velocity of the stellar disc reaches ∼70 per cent of its maximum. From our analysis, we conclude that it is possible and useful to infer birth radii for the LMC and other external galaxies that satisfy the above criteria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The origin and evolution of CO gas in debris discs has been debated since its initial detection. The gas could have a primordial origin, as a remnant of the protoplanetary disc or a secondary exocometary origin. This paper investigates the origin of gas in two debris discs, HD110058 and HD131488, using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of CI and CO, which play critical roles in the gas evolution. We fitted several electronic transitions of CI and CO rovibronic bands to derive column densities and temperatures for each system, revealing high CO column densities (∼3–4 orders of magnitude higher than β Pictoris), and low CI/CO ratios in both. Using the exogas model, we simulated the radial evolution of the gas in the debris disc assuming a secondary gas origin. We explored a wide range of CO exocometary release rates and α viscosities, which are the key parameters of the model. Additionally, we incorporated photodissociation due to stellar ultraviolet (UV) to the exogas model and found that it is negligible for typical CO-rich discs and host stars, even at a few au due to the high radial optical depths in the Extreme ultraviolet radiation (EUV). We find that the current steady-state secondary release model cannot simultaneously reproduce the CO and CI HST -derived column densities, as it predicts larger CI/CO ratios than observed. Our direct UV measurement of low CI/CO ratios agrees with results derived from recent Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array findings and may point to vertical layering of CI, additional CI removal, CO shielding processes, or different gas origin scenarios. The morphology of galaxies is shaped by stellar activity, feedback, gas and dust properties, and interactions with surroundings, and can therefore provide insight into these processes. In this paper, we study the spatial offsets between stellar and interstellar medium emission in a sample of 54 main-sequence star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 4–6 observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), and drawn from the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate C+ at Early times (ALPINE). We find no significant spatial offset for the majority (∼70 per cent) of galaxies in the sample among any combination of [C  ii ], far-infrared continuum, optical, and ultraviolet emission. However, a fraction of the sample (∼30 per cent) shows offsets larger than the median by more than 3σ significance (compared to the uncertainty on the offsets), especially between [C  ii ] and ultraviolet emission. We find that these significant offsets are of the order of ∼0.5–0.7 arcsec, corresponding to ∼3.5–4.5 kiloparsecs. The offsets could be caused by a complex dust geometry, strong feedback from stars and active galactic nuclei, large-scale gas inflow and outflow, or a combination of these phenomena. However, our current analysis does not definitively constrain the origin. Future, higher resolution ALMA and JWST observations may help resolve the ambiguity. Regardless, since there exist at least some galaxies that display such large offsets, galaxy models and spectral energy distribution fitting codes cannot assume co-spatial emission in all main-sequence galaxies, and must take into account that the observed emission across wavelengths may be spatially segregated. In this paper, we report near-infrared observations of the classical T Tauri star TW Hya with the SPIRou high-resolution spectropolarimeter and velocimeter at the 3.6-m Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. By applying Least-Squares Deconvolution (LSD) to our circularly polarized spectra, we derived longitudinal fields that vary from year to year from –200 to +100 G, and exhibit low-level modulation on the 3.6 d rotation period of TW Hya, despite the star being viewed almost pole-on. We then used Zeeman–Doppler Imaging to invert our sets of unpolarized and circularly polarized LSD profiles into brightness and magnetic maps of TW Hya in all four seasons, and obtain that the large-scale field of this T Tauri star mainly consists of a 1.0–1.2 kG dipole tilted at about 20° to the rotation axis, whereas the small-scale field reaches strengths of up to 3–4 kG. We find that the large-scale field is strong enough to allow TW Hya to accrete material from the disc on the polar regions at the stellar surface in a more or less geometrically stable accretion pattern, but not to succeed in spinning down the star. We also report the discovery of a radial velocity signal of semi-amplitude |$11.1^{+3.3}_{-2.6}$| m s−1 (detected at 4.3σ) at a period of 8.3 d in the spectrum of TW Hya, whose origin may be attributed to either a non-axisymmetric density structure in the inner accretion disc, or to a |$0.55^{+0.17}_{-0.13}$| MꝜ candidate close-in planet (if orbiting in the disc plane), at an orbital distance of 0.075 ± 0.001 au. The distribution of moving groups in the solar neighbourhood has been used to constrain dynamical properties of the Milky Way for decades. The kinematic bimodality between the main mode (Hyades, Pleiades, Coma Berenices, and Sirius) and Hercules can be explained by two different bar models – via the outer Lindblad resonance of a bar with a high pattern speed (∼55 km s−1 kpc−1), or via the corotation resonance of a bar with a low pattern speed (∼40 km s−1 kpc−1). Recent works directly studying the kinematics of bar stars and gas flows near the centre of the Galaxy have converged on the low pattern speed model. In this paper, we independently confirm this result by using Gaia DR3 to directly study the variation of Hercules across Galactic azimuth. We find that Hercules increases in V ϕ and becomes stronger as we move towards the minor axis of the bar, and decreases in V ϕ and becomes weaker as we move towards the major axis of the bar. This is in direct agreement with theoretical predictions of a low pattern speed bar model in which Hercules is formed by the corotation resonance with stars orbiting the bar's L4/L5 Lagrange points. Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars are intermediate-mass pre-main-sequence stars, characterized by infrared (IR) excess and emission lines. They are observed to emit X-rays, whose origin is a matter of discussion and not settled yet. X-ray emission is not expected in HAeBe stars, as they lack the subsurface convective zone. In this study, we retrieved observations from the Chandra archive for 62 HAeBe stars, among which 44 sources (detection fraction ∼71  per cent) were detected in X-rays, with 7 being new detections. We use this sample as a test bed to conduct a comparative analysis of the X-ray properties of HAeBe stars and their low-mass counterparts, T Tauri stars (TTSs). Further, we compare the X-ray properties of HAeBe stars and TTSs with optical and IR properties to constrain the X-ray emission mechanism in HAeBe stars. We found no correlation between X-ray emission and disc properties of HAeBe stars, confirming that X-rays are not related to accretion shocks. About 56  per cent of HAeBe stars without any known subarcsec companions have lower plasma temperatures (kT ≤ 2 keV). We observe flaring/variability in HAeBe stars with confirmed low-mass companions. These stars show plasma temperatures > 2 keV, similar to TTSs. Guided by this information, we discuss the role of a T Tauri companion for X-ray emission seen in our sample of HAeBe stars. From the results obtained in this paper, we suggest that X-ray emission from HAeBe stars may not be related to accretion shocks or hidden TTS, but rather can be due to magnetically driven coronal emission. The oldest stars in the Milky Way (born in the first few billion years) are expected to have a high density in the inner few kpc, spatially overlapping with the Galactic bulge. We use spectroscopic data from the Pristine Inner Galaxy Survey (PIGS) to study the dynamical properties of ancient, metal-poor inner Galaxy stars. We compute distances using starhorse , and orbital properties in a barred Galactic potential. With this paper, we release the spectroscopic AAT/PIGS catalogue (13 235 stars). We find that most PIGS stars have orbits typical for a pressure-supported population. The fraction of stars confined to the inner Galaxy decreases with decreasing metallicity, but many very metal-poor stars (VMP; [Fe/H] <−2.0) stay confined (⁠|$\sim 60~{{\ \rm per \, cent}}$| stay within 5 kpc). The azimuthal velocity vϕ also decreases between [Fe/H] = −1.0 and −2.0, but is constant for VMP stars (at ∼+40 km s−1). The carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars in PIGS appear to have similar orbital properties compared to normal VMP stars. Our results suggest a possible transition between two spheroidal components – a more metal-rich, more concentrated, faster rotating component, and a more metal-poor, more extended and slower/non-rotating component. We propose that the former may be connected to pre-disc in-situ stars (or those born in large building blocks), whereas the latter may be dominated by contributions from smaller galaxies. This is an exciting era where large metal-poor samples, such as in this work (as well as upcoming surveys, e.g. 4MOST), shed light on the earliest evolution of our Galaxy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present near-infrared JHK photometry for the resolved stellar populations in 13 nearby galaxies: NGC 6822, IC 1613, NGC 3109, Sextans B, Sextans A, NGC 300, NGC 55, NGC 7793, NGC 247, NGC 5253, Cen A, NGC 1313, and M83, acquired from the 6.5 m Baade–Magellan telescope. We measure distances to each galaxy using the J-region asymptotic giant branch (JAGB) method, a new standard candle that leverages the constant luminosities of color-selected, carbon-rich AGB stars. While only single-epoch, random-phase photometry is necessary to derive JAGB distances, our photometry is time-averaged over multiple epochs, thereby decreasing the contribution of the JAGB stars' intrinsic variability to the measured dispersions in their observed luminosity functions. To cross-validate these distances, we also measure near-infrared tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) distances to these galaxies. The residuals obtained from subtracting the distance moduli from the two methods yield an rms scatter of σ JAGB−TRGB = ±0.07 mag. Therefore, all systematics in the JAGB method and TRGB method (e.g., crowding, differential reddening, star formation histories) must be contained within these ±0.07 mag bounds for this sample of galaxies because the JAGB and TRGB distance indicators are drawn from entirely distinct stellar populations and are thus affected by these systematics independently. Finally, the composite JAGB star luminosity function formed from this diverse sample of galaxies is well described by a Gaussian function with a modal value of M J = –6.20 ± 0.003 mag (stat), indicating that the underlying JAGB star luminosity function of a well-sampled full star formation history is highly symmetric and Gaussian based on over 6700 JAGB stars in the composite sample. EC 19529−4430 was identified as a helium-rich star in the Edinburgh–Cape (EC) Survey of faint-blue objects and subsequently resolved as a metal-poor extreme helium (EHe) star in the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) survey of chemically peculiar hot subdwarfs. This paper presents a fine analysis of the SALT high-resolution spectrum. EC 19529−4430 has |$T_{\rm eff} = 20\, 700 \pm 250$|  K, |$\log g /{\rm cm\, s^{-2}} = 3.49\pm 0.03$|⁠ , and an overall metallicity some 1.3 dex below solar; surface hydrogen is |$\approx 0.5~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| by number. The surface CNO ratio 1:100:8 implies that the surface consists principally of CNO-processed helium and makes EC 19529−4430 the coolest known carbon-poor and nitrogen-rich EHe star. Metal-rich analogues include V652 Her and GALEX J184559.8−413827. Kinematically, its retrograde orbit indicates membership of the Galactic halo. No pulsations were detected in TESS photometry and there is no evidence for a binary companion. EC 19529−4430 most likely formed from the merging of two helium white dwarfs, which themselves formed as a binary system some 11 Gyr ago. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The environmental dependence of Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) luminosities is well established, and efforts are being made to find its origin. Previous studies typically use the currently observed status of the host galaxy. However, given the delay time between the birth of the progenitor star and the SN Ia explosion, the currently observed status may differ from the birth environment of the SN Ia progenitor star. In this paper, employing the chemical evolution and accurately determined stellar population properties of 44 early-type host galaxies, we, for the first time, estimate the SN Ia progenitor star birth environment, specifically [Fe/H]Birth and [α/Fe]Birth. We show that [α/Fe]Birth has a |$30.4^{\text{+10.6}}_{-10.1}{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| wider range than the currently observed [α/Fe]Current, while the range of [Fe/H]Birth is not statistically different (⁠|$17.9^{\text{+26.0}}_{-27.1}{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) to that of [Fe/H]Current. The birth and current environments of [Fe/H] and [α/Fe] are sampled from different populations (p -values of the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test <0.01). We find that light-curve fit parameters are insensitive to [Fe/H]Birth (<0.9σ for the non-zero slope), while a linear trend is observed with Hubble residuals (HRs) at the 2.4σ significance level. With [α/Fe]Birth, no linear trends (<1.1σ) are observed. Interestingly, we find that [α/Fe]Birth clearly splits the SN Ia sample into two groups: SN Ia exploded in [α/Fe]Birth-rich or [α/Fe]Birth-poor environments. SNe Ia exploded in different [α/Fe]Birth groups have different weighted-means of light-curve shape parameters: 0.81 ± 0.33 (2.5σ). They are thought to be drawn from different populations (p -value = 0.01). This paper presents the results of analysing the integrated light (IL) low-resolution spectra of globular clusters (GCs) in the M31 and Centaurus A groups of galaxies. The sample consists of eight very metal-poor GCs (⁠|$\rm [Fe/H]\le -2$| dex) with high signal-to-noise ratio spectra acquired with the telescopes: the 6-m SAO RAS (BTA), the Southern African Large (SALT), and the 6.5-m Magellan (MMT). We study the influence of contribution of the horizontal branch stars on the hydrogen Balmer line profiles in the IL spectra. By modelling the Balmer lines, as well as the metal lines in the observed spectra, we determine the optimum parameters of stellar evolution isochrones and, consequently, the parameters of the atmospheres of the cluster stars. For all the studied GCs, the parameters of horizontal branch stars set by the selected isochrones, the corresponding ages, and carbon abundances are presented for the first time. The abundances of several other elements (Mg, Ca, Ti, Cr, and Mn) were determined for five GCs for the first time. All the studied GCs have blue horizontal branches and are older than 10 Gyr. Their chemical abundances, with the exception of Mg and Mn, are in good agreement with the abundances of stars in the Galactic field. The reasons of low [Mg/Fe] and of high [Mn/Fe] are discussed. Study of the fundamental properties of stellar populations in old GCs facilitates a better understanding of the formation processes of their parent galaxies and nucleosynthesis in the early Universe. The active galactic nucleus (AGN) disc has been proposed as a potential channel for the merger of binary black holes. The population of massive stars and black holes in AGN discs captured from the nuclei cluster plays a crucial role in determining the efficiency of binary formation and final merger rate within the AGN discs. In this paper, we investigate the capture process using analytical and numerical approaches. We discover a new constant integral of motion for one object's capture process. Applying this result to the whole population of the nuclei cluster captured by the AGN disc, we find that the population of captured objects depends on the angular density and eccentricity distribution of the nuclei clusters and is effectively independent of the radial density profile of the nuclei cluster and disc models. An isotropic nuclei cluster with thermal eccentricity distribution predicts a captured profile d N /d r  ∝  r −1/4. The captured objects are found to be dynamically crowded within the disc. Direct binary formation right after the capture would be promising, especially for stars. PSR B1259-63 is a gamma-ray binary system with a radio pulsar orbiting an O9.5Ve star, LS 2883, with a period of |${\sim} 3.4$| yr. Close to the periastron the system is detected at all wavelengths, from radio to the TeV energies. The emission in this time period is believed to originate from the interaction of LS 2883 and pulsar's outflows. The observations of four periastra passages taken in 2010–2021 show strong correlation of the radio and X-ray light curves with two peaks just before and after the periastron. The observations of the latest 2021 periastron passage reveal the presence of the 3rd X-ray peak and subsequent disappearance of radio/X-ray flux correlation. In this paper, we present the results of our optical, radio, and X-ray observational campaigns on PSR B1259-63 performed in 2021 accompanied with the analysis of the publicly available GeV Fermi/LAT data. We compare the properties of different periastron passages, discuss the obtained results and show that they can be explained in terms of the 2-zone emission model proposed by us previously. While dwarf galaxies observed in the field are overwhelmingly star forming, dwarf galaxies in environments as dense or denser than the Milky Way are overwhelmingly quenched. In this paper, we explore quenching in the lower density environment of the Small-Magellanic-Cloud-mass galaxy NGC 3109 (M |$_* \sim 10^8 \, \text{M}_\odot$|⁠), which hosts two known dwarf satellite galaxies (Antlia and Antlia B), both of which are |${\rm H}\, \rm{\small I}$| deficient compared to similar galaxies in the field and have recently stopped forming stars. Using a new semi-analytic model in concert with the measured star formation histories and gas masses of the two dwarf satellite galaxies, we show that they could not have been quenched solely by direct ram pressure stripping of their interstellar media, as is common in denser environments. Instead, we find that separation of the satellites from pristine gas inflows, coupled with stellar-feedback-driven outflows from the satellites (jointly referred to as the starvation quenching model), can quench the satellites on time-scales consistent with their likely infall times into NGC 3109's halo. It is currently believed that starvation is caused by 'weak' ram pressure that prevents low-density, weakly bound gas from being accreted on to the dwarf satellite, but cannot directly remove the denser interstellar medium. This suggests that star-formation-driven outflows serve two purposes in quenching satellites in low-mass environments: outflows from the host form a low-density circumgalactic medium that cannot directly strip the interstellar media from its satellites, but is sufficient to remove loosely bound gaseous outflows from the dwarf satellites driven by their own star formation. There are many rotating spheroids in the universe, and many astronomers and physicists have used theoretical methods to study the characteristics of stellar gravity since Newton's time. This paper derives the solutions of eight scattering states (ϕ(0),χ(0),ϕ(1),χ(1),ϕ(2)$$ \Big({\phi}^{(0)},{\chi}^{(0)},{\phi}^{(1)},{\chi}^{(1)},{\phi}^{(2)} $$,χ(2),ϕ(3)$$ {\chi}^{(2)},{\phi}^{(3)} $$, andχ(3))$$ {\chi}^{(3)}\Big) $$ for the Dirac equation with positive‐energy E=im$$ E= im $$, and establishes the relationship between the differential scattering cross section σi(p,θ,φ)$$ {\sigma}_i\left(p,\theta, \varphi \right) $$ and the stellar density μ$$ \mu $$. It is found that: (1) For the eight scattering states, their average scattering cross‐sections σi‾$$ \overline{\sigma_i} $$ are proportional to μ2$$ {\mu}^2 $$, and depend on the star's radius, and the higher the stellar density μ$$ \mu $$, the greater the sensitivity of σi‾$$ \overline{\sigma i} $$ to the change of μ$$ \mu $$; (2) For the four scattering states χ(i),i=0,1,2,3$$ {\chi}^{(i)},i=0,1,2,3 $$, their average scattering amplitudes f‾(p,θ)$$ \overline{f}\left(p,\theta \right) $$ and σ‾(p,θ)$$ \overline{\sigma}\left(p,\theta \right) $$ depend on the mass m$$ m $$ of the particles; while for the other four scattering states ϕ(i)$$ {\phi}^{(i)} $$, i=0,1,2,3$$ i=0,1,2,3 $$, then f‾$$ \overline{f} $$ and σ‾$$ \overline{\sigma} $$ are independent of m$$ m $$. This paper presents a comprehensive X-ray and multiwavelength study of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in NGC 1566 using archival Chandra, Swift/XRT, JWST , and HST observations. The main results are, first, from the hardness ratio diagram, where spectral state transitions from hard to soft as seen in typical Galactic high-mass X-ray binaries for ULX-3 were observed. Secondly, a new transient ULX candidate (ULX-4) was identified, reaching a peak luminosity of ∼1040 erg s−1. Thirdly, the optical and NIR (near-infrared) counterparts of the ULXs were searched from the precise astrometric calculations. For ULX-1 and ULX-2, evidence was found that the observed NIR emission is due to the circumbinary disc/dust disrupted by X-rays. Lastly, the optical observations suggest that the possible donor star of ULX-3 is a B-type supergiant. When a galaxy falls into a cluster, its outermost parts are the most affected by the environment. In this paper, we are interested in studying the influence of a dense environment on different galaxy's components to better understand how this affects the evolution of galaxies. We use, as laboratory for this study, the Hydra cluster which is close to virialization; yet it still shows evidence of substructures. We present a multiwavelength bulge–disc decomposition performed simultaneously in 12 bands from S-PLUS (Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey) data for 52 galaxies brighter than mr  = 16. We model the galaxies with a Sérsic profile for the bulge and an exponential profile for the disc. We find that the smaller, more compact, and bulge-dominated galaxies tend to exhibit a redder colour at a fixed stellar mass. This suggests that the same mechanisms (ram-pressure and tidal stripping) that are causing the compaction in these galaxies are also causing them to stop forming stars. The bulge size is unrelated to the galaxy's stellar mass, while the disc size increases with greater stellar mass, indicating the dominant role of the disc in the overall galaxy mass–size relation found. Furthermore, our analysis of the environment unveils that quenched galaxies are prevalent in regions likely associated with substructures. However, these areas also harbour a minority of star-forming galaxies, primarily resulting from galaxy interactions. Lastly, we find that ∼37 per cent of the galaxies exhibit bulges that are bluer than their discs, indicative of an outside-in quenching process in this type of dense environments. With the launch of JWST and other scheduled missions aimed at probing the distant universe, we are entering a new promising era for high- z astronomy. One of our main goals is the detection of the first population of stars (Population III or Pop III stars), and models suggest that Pop III star formation is allowed well into the Epoch of Reionization (EoR), rendering this an attainable achievement. In this paper, we focus on our chance of detecting massive Pop IIIs at the moment of their death as Pair-Instability Supernovae (PISNe). We estimate the probability of discovering PISNe during the EoR in galaxies with different stellar masses (7.5 ≤ Log(M ⋆/M⊙) ≤ 10.5) from six dustyGadget simulations of 50  h −1 cMpc per side. We further assess the expected number of PISNe in surveys with JWST/NIRCam and Roman/WFI. On average, less than one PISN is expected in all examined JWST fields at z ≃ 8 with Δ z  = 1, and O(1) PISN may be found in a ∼1 deg2 Roman field in the best-case scenario, although different assumptions on the Pop III IMF and/or Pop III star formation efficiency can decrease this number substantially. Including the contribution from unresolved low-mass haloes holds the potential for increased discoveries. JWST/NIRCam and Roman/WFI allow the detection of massive-progenitor (∼250 M⊙) PISNe throughout all the optimal F200W-F356W, F277W-F444W, and F158-F213 colours. PISNe are also pre-dominantly located at the outskirts of their hosting haloes, facilitating the disentangling of underlying stellar emission thanks to the spatial-resolution capabilities of the instruments. Low-metallicity very massive stars with an initial mass of ∼140– |$260\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$| are expected to end their lives as pair-instability supernovae (PISNe). The abundance pattern resulting from a PISN differs drastically from regular core-collapse supernova (CCSN) models and is expected to be seen in very metal-poor (VMP) stars of [Fe/H] ≲ −2. Despite the routine discovery of many VMP stars, the unique abundance pattern expected from PISNe has not been unambiguously detected. The recently discovered VMP star LAMOST J1010 + 2358, however, shows a peculiar abundance pattern that is remarkably well fit by a PISN, indicating the potential first discovery of a bonafide star born from gas polluted by a PISN. In this paper, we study the detailed nucleosynthesis in a large set of models of CCSN of Pop III and Pop II star of metallicity [Fe/H] = −3 with masses ranging from 12 to |$30\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$|⁠. We find that the observed abundance pattern in LAMOST J1010 + 2358 can be fit at least equally well by CCSN models of ∼12– |$14\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$| that undergo negligible fallback following the explosion. The best-fitting CCSN models provide a fit that is even marginally better than the best-fitting PISN model. We conclude the measured abundance pattern in LAMOST J1010 + 2358 could have originated from a CCSN and therefore cannot be unambiguously identified with a PISN given the set of elements measured in it to date. We identify key elements that need to be measured in future detections in stars like LAMOST J1010 + 2358 that can differentiate between CCSN and PISN origin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores the application of machine learning methods for classifying astronomical sources using photometric data, including normal and emission line galaxies (ELGs; starforming, starburst, AGN, broad-line), quasars, and stars. We utilized samples from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 17 (DR17) and the ALLWISE catalogue, which contain spectroscopically labelled sources from SDSS. Our methodology comprises two parts. First, we conducted experiments, including three-class, four-class, and seven-class classifications, employing the Random Forest (RF) algorithm. This phase aimed to achieve optimal performance with balanced data sets. In the second part, we trained various machine learning methods, such as k -nearest neighbours (KNN), RF, XGBoost (XGB), voting, and artificial neural network (ANN), using all available data based on promising results from the first phase. Our results highlight the effectiveness of combining optical and infrared features, yielding the best performance across all classifiers. Specifically, in the three-class experiment, RF and XGB algorithms achieved identical average F1 scores of 98.93 per cent on both balanced and unbalanced data sets. In the seven-class experiment, our average F1 score was 73.57 per cent. Using the XGB method in the four-class experiment, we achieved F1 scores of 87.9 per cent for normal galaxies (NGs), 81.5 per cent for ELGs, 99.1 per cent for stars, and 98.5 per cent for quasars (QSOs). Unlike classical methods based on time-consuming spectroscopy, our experiments demonstrate the feasibility of using automated algorithms on carefully classified photometric data. Even over relatively recent epochs, galaxies have evolved significantly in their location in the mass–metallicity plane, which must be telling us something about the latter stages of galaxy evolution. In this paper, we analyse data from the LEGA-C survey using semi-analytic spectral and photometric fitting to determine these galaxies' evolution up to their observed epoch at z ∼ 0.7. We confirm that, at z ∼ 0.7, many objects already lie on the present-day mass–metallicity relation, but with a significant tail of high-mass low-metallicity galaxies that is not seen in the nearby Universe. Similar modelling of the evolution of galaxies in the nearby MaNGA survey allows us to reconstruct their properties at z ∼ 0.7. Once selection criteria similar to those of LEGA-C are applied, we reassuringly find that the MaNGA galaxies populate the mass–metallicity plane in the same way at z ∼ 0.7. Matching the LEGA-C sample to their mass–metallicity 'twins' in MaNGA at this redshift, we can explore the likely subsequent evolution of individual LEGA-C galaxies. Galaxies already on the present-day mass–metallicity relation form few more stars and their discs fade, so they become smaller and more bulge-like. By contrast, the high-mass low-metallicity galaxies grow their discs through late star formation, and evolve rapidly to higher metallicities due to a cut-off in their wind-driven mass-loss. This is the fourth paper of our new release of the BaSTI (a Bag of Stellar Tracks and Isochrones) stellar model and isochrone library. Following the updated solar-scaled, α-enhanced, and white dwarf model libraries, we present here α-depleted ([α/Fe] = −0.2) evolutionary tracks and isochrones, suitable to study the α-depleted stars discovered in Local Group dwarf galaxies and in the Milky Way. These calculations include all improvements and updates of the solar-scaled and α-enhanced models, and span a mass range between 0.1 and 15 M⊙, and 21 metallicities between [Fe/H] = −3.20 and +0.45 with a helium-to-metal enrichment ratio Δ Y /Δ Z  = 1.31, homogeneous with the solar-scaled and α-enhanced models. The isochrones – available in several photometric filters – cover an age range between ∼20 Myr and 14.5 Gyr, including the pre-main-sequence phase. We have compared our isochrones with independent calculations of α-depleted stellar models, available for the same α-element depletion adopted in the present investigation. We have also discussed the effect of an α-depleted heavy element distribution on the bolometric corrections in different wavelength regimes. For the first time in history, Parker Solar Probe touched the Sun in April 2021 when it entered the Sun's corona—humanity's first mission ever that reached the Sun—for a scientific in-situ study to unlock the mystery of our star. To reach the Sun is extremely difficult because, unlike any other space exploration destination, the Sun is the solar system's central body, around which Earth and other planets revolve. Earth orbits the Sun at a velocity of about 30 km/s, so for a spacecraft to reach the Sun from Earth the spacecraft must cancel out its velocity in the Earth orbit so it can fall to the Sun. That requires an excessively large energy higher than that required to reach any destination in the solar system, which is beyond the capability of current rockets. This paper describes how Parker Solar Probe is delivered to the Sun through a unique V7GA trajectory that enables it to attain the excessive energy through planetary gravity assists of Venus, flying by Venus seven times to ultimately come within 9.86 solar radii (R S) of the Sun. An emphasis is on in-flight trajectory control of the probe through the intricate V7GA trajectory in actual operation in an unprecedented space environment around the Sun, where unpredictable orbit perturbations plus their ripple effects on the consecutive seven Venus flybys could easily drive the flight trajectory out of control. A novel systematic 2-level control method is developed and has been applied to solve the complicated trajectory control problem in flight operation, using in-flight trajectory re-optimization to select the targets of Venus flybys as trajectory control points and then using trajectory correction maneuvers to target a Venus flyby at the control point. This method enables effective and efficient control of the intricate V7GA trajectory and has resulted in significantly better than pre-launch anticipated flight performance, saving tremendous ΔV. Four years from launch, Parker Solar Probe has completed 5 of the 7 Venus gravity-assist flybys and 12 of the 24 planned solar encounters, passing by the Sun at 13 R S in its orbit. Analysis of f-mode frequencies has provided a measure of the radius of the Sun which is lower, by a few hundredths per cent, than the photospheric radius determined by direct optical measurement. Part of this difference can be understood by recognizing that it is primarily the variation of density well beneath the photosphere of the star that determines the structure of these essentially adiabatic oscillation modes, not some aspect of radiative intensity. In this paper we attempt to shed further light on the matter, by considering a differently defined, and dynamically more robust, seismic radius, namely one determined from p-mode frequencies. This radius is calibrated by the distance from the centre of the Sun to the position in the subphotospheric layers where the first derivative of the density scale height changes essentially discontinuously. We find that radius is more-or-less consistent with what is suggested by the f modes. In addition, the interpretation of the radius inferred from p modes leads us to understand more deeply the role of the total mass constraint in the structure inversions. This enables us to reinterpret the sound-speed inversion, suggesting that the positions of the photosphere and the adiabatically stratified layers in the convective envelope differ non-homologously from those of the standard solar model. Exoplanets hosting M dwarfs are the best targets to characterize Earth-like or super-Earth planetary atmospheres with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We determine detailed stellar parameters (T eff, log g, and ξ) and individual abundances of 12 elements for four cool M dwarfs hosting exoplanets TOI-1685, GJ 436, GJ 3470, and TOI-2445, scheduled for future observations by the JWST. The analysis utilizes high-resolution near-infrared spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV APOGEE survey between 1.51 and 1.69 μ m. Based on 1D LTE plane-parallel models, we find that TOI-2445 is slightly metal poor ([Fe/H] = −0.16 ± 0.09 dex), while TOI-1685, GJ 436, and GJ 3470 are more metal rich ([Fe/H] = 0.06 ± 0.18, 0.10 ± 0.20, and 0.25 ± 0.15 dex, respectively). The derived C/O ratios for TOI-2445, TOI-1685, GJ 436, and GJ 3470 are 0.526 ± 0.027, 0.558 ± 0.097, 0.561 ± 0.029, and 0.638 ± 0.015, respectively. From the results for 28 M dwarfs analyzed homogeneously from Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) spectra, we find exoplanet-hosting M dwarfs exhibit a C/O abundance ratio approximately 0.01–0.05 higher than those with nondetected exoplanets, at limits of a statistically significant offset. A linear regression of the [Fe/H] versus C/O distribution reveals a noticeable difference in the angular coefficient between FGK dwarfs (0.27) and M dwarfs (0.13). Assuming our abundance ratios of Ca/Mg, Si/Mg, Al/Mg, and Fe/Mg, we determine a mass of 3.276 − 0.419 + 0.448 M ⊕ for TOI-2445 b, which has a density (6.793 − 0.099 + 0.005 g cm−3) and core mass fraction (0.329 − 0.049 + 0.028 ) very similar to Earth's. Stars in the Galactic disk are born on cold, nearly circular orbits with small vertical excursions. After their birth, their orbits evolve, driven by small- or large-scale perturbations in the Galactic disk's gravitational potential. Here, we study the vertical motions of young stars over their first few orbital periods, using a sample of OBA stars from Gaia E/DR3, which includes radial velocities and ages τ from LAMOST. We construct a parametric model for the time evolution of the stellar orbits' mean vertical actions J z as a function of Galactocentric radius, R GC. Accounting for data uncertainties, we use Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis in annuli of Galactocentric radius (R GC) to constrain the model parameters. Our best-fit model shows a remarkably linear increase of vertical actions with age across all Galactocentric radii examined. Orbital heating by random scattering could offer a straightforward interpretation for this trend. However, various other dynamical aspects of the Galactic disk, such as stars being born in a warped disk, might offer alternative explanations that could be tested in the future. During Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) in the first 15 minutes of the Universe, some 7Li was created along with isotopes of H and He. The determination of that primordial value of Li can help constrain the conditions at that time. The oldest stars with known ages can be found in globular clusters which have well-determined ages through stellar evolution models. High-resolution spectra of Li have been obtained with the Keck I Telescope and HIRES in several unevolved stars in the clusters M13 and M71 with V magnitudes of 17.6–17.9. Abundances of Li have been determined with spectrum synthesis techniques and show a range of a factor of 4. We attribute that spread to differences in initial angular momentum resulting in different amounts of spin-down, related mixing, and destruction of Li. Our results are compared with similar results for main-sequence and turnoff stars in other globular clusters. The range in age of these clusters is 11.2–14.2 Gyr for an age span of 3 Gyr. These clusters range in [Fe/H] from −0.75 to −2.24 corresponding to a factor of 30 in metallicity. The maximum in the Li abundance for these unevolved stars in all eight clusters is the same corresponding to Li/H = 3.16 × 10−10, while the predicted Li abundance, based on the deuterium abundance and the BBN predictions, is 5.24 × 10−10.
