BACKGROUND: Evidence linking gaseous air pollution to late-life brain health is mixed. OBJECTIVE: We explored associations between exposure to gaseous pollutants and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) markers among Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study participants, with attention to the influence of exposure estimation method and confounding by site. METHODS: We considered data from 1,665 eligible ARIC participants recruited from four US sites in the period 1987-1989 with valid brain MRI data from Visit 5 (2011-2013). We estimated 10-y (2001-2010) mean carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (N[O.sub.2]), nitrogen oxides (N[O.sub.x]), and 8-and 24-h ozone ([O.sub.3]) concentrations at participant addresses, using multiple exposure estimation methods. We estimated site-specific associations between pollutant exposures and brain MRI outcomes (total and regional volumes; presence of microhemorrhages, infarcts, lacunes, and severe white matter hyperintensities), using adjusted linear and logistic regression models. We compared meta-analytically combined site-specific associations to analyses that did not account for site. RESULTS: Within-site exposure distributions varied across exposure estimation methods. Meta-analytic associations were generally not statistically significant regardless of exposure, outcome, or exposure estimation method; point estimates often suggested associations between higher N[O.sub.2] and N[O.sub.x] and smaller temporal lobe, deep gray, hippocampal, frontal lobe, and Alzheimer disease signature region of interest volumes and between higher CO and smaller temporal and frontal lobe volumes. Analyses that did not account for study site more often yielded significant associations and sometimes different direction of associations. DISCUSSION: Patterns of local variation in estimated air pollution concentrations differ by estimation method. Although we did not find strong evidence supporting impact of gaseous pollutants on brain changes detectable by MRI, point estimates suggested associations between higher exposure to CO, N[O.sub.x], and N[O.sub.2] and smaller regional brain volumes. Background: Many approaches to quantifying air pollution exposures have been developed. However, the impact of choice of approach on air pollution estimates and health-effects associations remains unclear. Objectives: Our objective is to compare particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter [less than or equal to]2.5 [micro]m (P[M.sub.2.5]) concentrations and resulting health effects associations using multiple estimation approaches previously used in epidemiologic analyses. Methods: We assigned annual P[M.sub.2.5] exposure estimates from 1999 to 2004 derived from 11 different approaches to Women's Health Initiative Memory Study (WHIMS) participant addresses within the contiguous US. Approaches included geostatistical interpolation approaches, land-use regression or spatiotemporal models, satellite-derived approaches, air dispersion and chemical transport models, and hybrid models. We used descriptive statistics and plots to assess relative and absolute agreement among exposure estimates and examined the impact of approach on associations between P[M.sub.2.5] and death due to natural causes, cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, and incident CVD events, adjusting for individual-level covariates and climate-based region. Results: With a few exceptions, relative agreement of approach-specific P[M.sub.2.5] exposure estimates was high for P[M.sub.2.5] concentrations across the contiguous US. Agreement among approach-specific exposure estimates was stronger near P[M.sub.2.5] monitors, in certain regions of the country, and in 2004 vs. 1999. Collectively, our results suggest but do not quantify lower agreement at local spatial scales for P[M.sub.2.5]. There was no evidence of large differences in health effects associations with P[M.sub.2.5] among estimation approaches in analyses adjusted for climate region. Conclusions: Different estimation approaches produced similar spatial patterns of P[M.sub.2.5] concentrations across the contiguous US and in areas with dense monitoring data, and P[M.sub.2.5]-health effects associations were similar among estimation approaches. P[M.sub.2.5] estimates and P[M.sub.2.5]-health effects associations may differ more in samples drawn from smaller areas or areas without substantial monitoring data, or in analyses with finer adjustment for participant location. Our results can inform decisions about P[M.sub.2.5] estimation approach in epidemiologic studies, as investigators balance concerns about bias, efficiency, and resource allocation. Many societies around the world are rapidly aging and this has implications for social and economic development. We collect data on NEEQ-listed enterprises from 2010 to 2021 in China and empirically test the effect of population aging on the digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The findings show that population aging has a significant positive impact on SME digital transformation, and private enterprises and enterprises in eastern regions of China tend to benefit more than other regions. The mechanism studies find that population aging positively impacts SME digital transformation by increasing labor costs, facilitating human capital accumulation, and raising savings rates. Furthermore, the threshold effect analyses find that the marginal promotion effect of population aging will weaken with greater aging and will strengthen with a higher level of marketization. Finally, we provide policy recommendations for promoting digital transformation in SMEs against the background of population aging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of the interaction between polygenes and the parent–child relationship on junior high school students' aggressive behaviors were explored through the frameworks of gene‐endophenotype‐behavior and neurophysiological basis. A total of 892 junior high school students participated in this study. They were asked to complete self‐reported questionnaires, and saliva samples were collected. Results showed that 5‐HTTLPR, MAOA‐uVNTR, COMT (rs4680), and Taq1 (rs1800497) of the DRD2 gene affected students' aggressive behaviors in an accumulative way. The polygenic risk score explained 3.4% of boys' aggression and 1.1% of girls' aggression. The interactions between polygenic risk score and parent–child conflict significantly affected the aggressive behaviors of male students, but did not show any significant effect on those of female students. The interactional effect of polygenic risk score and parent–child conflict on junior high school students' aggressive behaviors was completely mediated by frustration. However, the interaction effect of polygenic risk score and parent–child affinity on aggression was not affected by frustration. This study helps us better understand junior high school students' aggressive behaviors and promotes the prevention and correction of adolescents' problem behaviors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: The health of Amphioctopus fangsiao, a species used in aquaculture or fish farming, can be greatly affected by infections. To understand how their immune system responds, we looked at the changes in their immune cells when exposed to substances that mimic these infections. By studying these responses, we were able to identify key parts of their immune system that change when faced with infection-causing threats. We also discovered important genes, including PKMYT1 (protein kinase, membrane associated tyrosine/threonine 1) and NAMPT (nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase), that play a crucial role in this response. Our study gives us a deeper understanding of the immune system of the Amphioctopus fangsiao. The primary influencer of aquaculture quality in Amphioctopus fangsiao is pathogen infection. Both lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (Poly I:C) are recognized by the pattern recognition receptor (PRR) within immune cells, a system that frequently serves to emulate pathogen invasion. Hemolymph, which functions as a transport mechanism for immune cells, offers vital transcriptome information when A. fangsiao is exposed to pathogens, thereby contributing to our comprehension of the species' immune biological mechanisms. In this study, we conducted analyses of transcript profiles under the influence of LPS and Poly I:C within a 24 h period. Concurrently, we developed a Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) to identify key modules and genes. Further, we carried out Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses to investigate the primary modular functions. Co-expression network analyses unveiled a series of immune response processes following pathogen stress, identifying several key modules and hub genes, including PKMYT1 and NAMPT. The invaluable genetic resources provided by our results aid our understanding of the immune response in A. fangsiao hemolymph and will further our exploration of the molecular mechanisms of pathogen infection in mollusks. In the meiotic prophase, programmed SPO11‐linked DNA double‐strand breaks (DSBs) are repaired by homologous recombination (HR). The MRE11‐RAD50‐NBS1 (MRN) complex is essential for initiating DNA end resection, the first step of HR. However, residual DNA end resection still occurs in Nbs1 knockout (KO) spermatocytes for unknown reasons. Here, we show that DNA end resection is completely abolished in Mre11 KO spermatocytes. In addition, Mre11 KO, but not Nbs1 KO, undifferentiated spermatogonia are rapidly exhausted due to DSB accumulation, proliferation defects, and elevated apoptosis. Cellular studies reveal that a small amount of MRE11 retained in the nucleus of Nbs1 KO cells likely underlies the differences between Mre11 and Nbs1 KO cells. Taken together, our study not only demonstrates an irreplaceable role of the MRE11 in DNA end resection at SPO11‐linked DSBs but also unveils a unique function of MRE11 in maintaining the long‐term viability of undifferentiated spermatogonia. Background: Increasing evidence links higher air pollution exposures to increased risk of cognitive impairment. While midlife risk factors are often most strongly linked to dementia risk, few studies have considered associations between midlife roadway proximity or ambient air pollution exposure and incident dementia decades later, in late life., Objectives: Our objective was to determine if midlife exposures to ambient air pollution or roadway proximity are associated with increased risk of dementia in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study over up to 29 years of follow-up., Methods: Our eligible sample included Black and White ARIC participants without dementia at Visit 2 (1990-1992). Participants were followed through Visit 7 (2018-2019), with dementia status and onset date defined based on formal dementia ascertainment at study visits, informant interviews, and surveillance efforts. We used adjusted Weibull survival models to assess the associations of midlife ambient air pollution and road proximity with incident dementia., Results: The median age at baseline (1990-1992, Visit 2) of the 12,700 eligible ARIC participants was 57.0 years; 56.0% were female, 24.2% were Black, and 78.9% had at least a high school education. Over up to 29 years of follow-up, 2511 (19.8%) persons developed dementia. No associations were found between ambient air pollutants and proximity to major roadways with risk of incident dementia. In exploratory analyses, living closer to roadways in midlife increased dementia risk in individuals younger at baseline and those without midlife hypertension, and there was evidence of increased risk of dementia with increased midlife exposure to NO x , several PM 2.5 components, and trace metals among those with diabetes in midlife., Conclusions: Midlife exposure to ambient air pollution and midlife roadway proximity was not associated with dementia risk over decades of follow-up.
