The combined use of eyewear, masks, and face shields is effective in preventing contamination of the facial and nasal region while performing AGPs. High-volume evacuation with or without an intraoral suction, low-volume evacuation, saliva ejector, and rubber dam (when appropriate) have shown effectiveness in reducing aerosol transmission beyond the generation site. Finally, the appropriate combination of ventilation and filtration in dental operatories is effective in limiting the spread of aerosols., Discussion and Conclusion: Aerosols produced during clinical procedures can pose a risk of infection transmission between dental hygienists and their patients. Bioaerosols generated during toilet flushing can contribute to the spread of airborne pathogens and cross-contamination in indoor environments. This presents an increased risk of fomite-mediated or aerosol disease transmission. This study systematically investigated the factors contributing to increased bioaerosol exposure following toilet flushing and developed an empirical model for predicting the exposure-relevant bioaerosol concentration. Air in a toilet cubicle was sampled by impaction after seeding with Clostridium difficile spores. Design of Experiments (DoE) main effects screening and full factorial design approaches were then employed to investigate the significant factors that heighten the risk of exposure to bioaerosols post-flush. Our findings reveal that the inoculated bacterial concentration (C), time elapsed after flushing (t), lateral distance (d), and mechanical ventilation (v) are significant predictors of bioaerosol concentration, with p-values < 0.05. The interaction term, C × d showed a marked increase in bioaerosol concentration up to 232 CFU/m 3 at the closest proximity and highest pathogen load. The interplay of C and t (C × t) demonstrated a time-dependent attenuation of bioaerosol viability, with concentrations peaking at 241 CFU/m 3 immediately post-flush and notably diminishing over time. The lateral distance and time post-flush (d × t) interaction also revealed a gradual decrease in bioaerosol concentration, highlighting the effectiveness of spatial and temporal dilution in mitigating bioaerosol exposure risks. Furthermore, there is an immediate rise in relative humidity levels post-flush, impacting the air quality in the toilet environment. This study not only advances our understanding of exposure pathways in determining bioaerosol exposure, but also offers pivotal insights for designing targeted interventions to reduce bioaerosol exposure. Recommendations include designing public toilets with antimicrobial surfaces, optimizing ventilation, and initiating timely disinfection protocols to prioritise surfaces closest to the toilet bowl during peak exposure periods, thereby promoting healthier indoor environments and safeguarding public health in high-traffic toilet settings., (© 2024. Background: In recent years, hand drying has been highlighted as a key step in appropriate hand hygiene, as moisture on hands can increase the transfer of micro-organisms from hands to surfaces and vice versa., Aim: To understand bacterial and viral aerosolization following hand drying, and study the transfer of micro-organisms from hands to surfaces after drying using different methods., Methods: Groups of five volunteers had their hands pre-washed with soap, rinsed and dried, then inoculated with a concentrated mixture of Pseudomonas fluorescens and MS2 bacteriophage. Volunteers entered an empty washroom, one at a time, and rinsed their hands with water or washed their hands with soap prior to drying with a jet dryer or paper towels. Each volunteer applied one hand successively to various surfaces, while their other hand was sampled using the glove juice method. Both residual bacteria and viruses were quantified from the washroom air, surface swabs and hand samples., Findings: P. fluorescens and MS2 bacteriophages were rarely aerosolized while drying hands for any of the drying methods studied. Results also showed limited, and similar, transfer of both micro-organisms studied on to surfaces for all drying methods., Conclusion: The use of jet dryers or paper towels produces low levels of aerosolization when drying hands in a washroom. Similarly, all drying methods result in low transfer to surfaces. Clouds are crucial in regulating the Earth's energy budget. Global cloud top heights have been easily retrieved from satellite measurements, but there are few methods for determining cloud base height (CBH) from satellite measurements. The Cloud Base Altitude Spatial Extrapolator (CBASE) algorithm was proposed to derive the height of the lower-troposphere liquid cloud base by using the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal polarization cloud aerosol LiDAR (CALIOP) profiles and weather observations at airports from aviation routine and special weather report (METARs and SPECIs, called METAR) observation data in the United States. A modification to the CBASE algorithm over China (CNMETAR-CBASE) is presented in this paper. In this paper, the ability of the CBASE algorithm to calculate CBH in China is evaluated, and METAR observations over China (CNMETAR) were then used to modify the CBASE algorithm. The results including CNMETAR observation data in China can better retrieve CBH over China compared with the results using the original CBASE algorithm, and the accuracy of the global CBH results has been improved. Overestimations of CBH with the original algorithm range from 500 to 800 m in China, which have been reduced to about 300 m with an improved algorithm. The deviations calculated by the algorithm also have a significant reduction, from 480 m (CBASE) to 420 m (CNMETAR-CBASE). In conclusion, the modified CBASE algorithm not only calculates the CBH more accurately in China but also improves the results of the global CBH retrieved from satellites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: As the global community begins recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, the challenges due to its aftermath remain. This health crisis has highlighted challenges associated with airborne pathogens and their capacity for rapid transmission. While many solutions have emerged to tackle this challenge, very few devices exist that are inexpensive, easy to manufacture, and versatile enough for various settings. Methods: This paper presents a novel suction device designed to counteract the spread of aerosols and droplets and be cost-effective and adaptable to diverse environments. We also conducted an experimental study to evaluate the device's effectiveness using an artificial cough generator, a particle counter, and a mannequin in an isolated system. We measured droplet removal rates with simulated single and repeated cough incidents. Also, measurements were taken at four distinct areas to compare its effectiveness on direct plume versus indirect particle removal. Results: The device reduced airborne disease transmission risk, as evidenced by its capacity to decrease the half-life of aerosol volume from 23.6 minutes to 15.6 minutes, effectively capturing aerosol-sized droplets known for their extended airborne persistence. The suction device lessened the peak total droplet volume from peak counts. At 22 minutes post peak droplet count, the count had dropped 24% without the suction device and 43% with the suction device. Conclusions: The experiment's findings confirm the suction device's capability to effectively remove droplets from the environment, making it a vital tool in enhancing indoor air quality. Given the sustained performance of the suction device irrespective of single or multiple cough events, this demonstrates its potential utility in reducing the risk of airborne disease transmission. 3D printing for fabrication opens the possibility of a rapid iterative design process, flexibility for different configurations, and rapid global deployment for future pandemics. In the atmosphere, aerosols can originate from numerous sources, leading to the mixing of different particle types. This paper introduces an approach to the partitioning of aerosol mixtures in terms of backscattering coefficients. The method utilizes data collected from the Mie–Raman–fluorescence lidar, with the primary input information being the aerosol backscattering coefficient (β), particle depolarization ratio (δ), and fluorescence capacity (GF). The fluorescence capacity is defined as the ratio of the fluorescence backscattering coefficient to the particle backscattering coefficient at the laser wavelength. By solving a system of equations that model these three properties (β , δ and GF), it is possible to characterize a three-component aerosol mixture. Specifically, the paper assesses the contributions of smoke, urban, and dust aerosols to the overall backscattering coefficient at 532 nm. It is important to note that aerosol properties (δ and GF) may exhibit variations even within a specified aerosol type. To estimate the associated uncertainty, we employ the Monte Carlo technique, which assumes that GF and δ are random values uniformly distributed within predefined intervals. In each Monte Carlo run, a solution is obtained. Rather than relying on a singular solution, an average is computed across the whole set of solutions, and their dispersion serves as a metric for method uncertainty. Numerical simulations of turbulent moist Rayleigh–Bénard convection driving CCN activation and droplet growth in the laboratory Pi chamber are discussed. Supersaturation fluctuations come from isobaric mixing of warm and humid air rising from the lower boundary with colder air featuring lower water vapor concentrations descending from the upper boundary. Lagrangian particle–based microphysics is used to represent the growth of haze CCN and cloud droplets with kinetic, solute, and surface tension effects included. Dry CCN spectra in the range between 2- and 200-nm radii from field observations are considered. Increasing the total CCN concentration from pristine to polluted conditions results in an increase in the droplet concentration and reduction in the mean droplet radius and spectral width. These are in agreement with Pi chamber observations and numerical simulations, as well as with numerous past studies of CCN cloud-base activation in natural clouds. The key result is that a relatively small fraction of the available CCN is activated in the Pi chamber fluctuating supersaturations, from about a half in the pristine case to only a 10th in the polluted case. The activation fraction as a function of the dry CCN radius is similar in all simulations, close to zero at the CCN small end, increasing to a maximum at CCN radius around 50 nm, and decreasing to close to zero at the large CCN end. This is explained as too small supersaturations to activate small CCN as in natural clouds and insufficient time to allow large CCN reaching the critical radius. Significance Statement: Impact of turbulence on the formation and growth of cloud droplets is an important cloud physics problem. Laboratory experiments in the Michigan Technological University cloud chamber provide key insights into this problem. Numerical simulations of cloud chamber processes discussed in this paper complement laboratory experiments by providing insights difficult or impossible to obtain in the laboratory. The study contrasts the formation and growth of cloud droplets in the laboratory cloud chamber with processes taking place in natural clouds. The differences documented in this paper pose questions concerning the impact of turbulence on the formation and growth of cloud droplets as a result of interactions of clouds with their environment. Background: During dental procedures, critical parameters, such as cooling condition, speed of the rotary dental turbine (handpiece), and distance and angle from pollution sources, were evaluated for transmission risk of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), simulated by spiking in a plasmid encoding a modified viral spike protein, HexaPro (S6P), in droplets and aerosols. Methods: To simulate routine operation in dental clinics, dental procedures were conducted on a dental manikin within a digital dental unit, incorporating different dental handpiece speeds and cooling conditions. The tooth model was immersed in Coomassie brilliant blue dye and was pre-coated with 100 μL water spiked-in with S6P-encoding plasmid. Furthermore, the manikin was surrounded by filter papers and Petri dishes positioned at different distances and angles. Subsequently, the filter papers and Petri dishes were collected to evaluate the aerosol splash points and the viral load of S6P-encoding plasmid in aerosols and splatters generated during the dental procedure. Results: Aerosol splashing generated a localized pollution area extended up to 60 cm, with heightened contamination risks concentrated within a 30 cm radius. Significant differences in aerosol splash points and viral load by different turbine handpiece speeds under any cooling condition (P < 0.05) were detected. The highest level of aerosol splash points and viral load were observed when the handpiece speed was set at 40,000 rpm. Conversely, the lowest level of aerosol splash point and viral load were found at a handpiece speed of 10,000 rpm. Moreover, the aerosol splash points with higher viral load were more prominent in the positions of the operator and assistant compared to other positions. Additionally, the position of the operator exhibited the highest viral load among all positions. Conclusions: To minimize the spread of aerosol and virus in clinics, dentists are supposed to adopt the minimal viable speed of a dental handpiece with limited cooling water during dental procedures. The ultraviolet multi-filter rotating shadow-band radiometer (UV-MFRSR) is a seven-channel radiometer with narrowband filters centered between wavelengths 300 and 368 nm. Four of the middle wavelengths in this device are near those used in the Dobson spectrometer to retrieve ozone column abundance. In this paper measurements from Mauna Loa Observatory (MLO) were used first to calibrate the instrument using the Langley plot method and subsequently to derive column ozone and aerosol optical depths. The ozone derived from the UV-MFRSR was compared to the ozone measured by a Dobson spectrophotometer that operates daily at the MLO, resulting in column values within about 1 DU on average for 43 d in 2018. The aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrievals are more challenging. Generally, the AOD increases with wavelength between 305 and 332 nm, not what is expected given the typical AOD wavelength dependence at visible wavelengths. An example of this behavior is discussed, and research by others is cited that indicates similar behavior at these wavelengths, at least for the low-aerosol-optical-depth conditions encountered at high-altitude sites. Understanding the impact of various climate forcing agents, such as aerosols, on extreme precipitation is socially and scientifically vital. While anthropogenic absorbing aerosols influence Earth's energy balance and atmospheric convection, their role in extreme events remains unclear. This paper uses convective‐resolving radiative‐convective‐equilibrium simulations, with fixed solar radiation, to investigate the influence of absorbing aerosols on extreme precipitation comprehensively. Our findings reveal an underappreciated mechanism through which absorbing aerosols can, under certain conditions, strongly intensify extreme precipitation. Notably, we demonstrate that a mechanism previously reported for much warmer (hothouse) climates, where intense rainfall alternates with multi‐day dry spells, can operate under current realistic conditions due to absorbing aerosol influence. This mechanism operates when an aerosol perturbation shifts the lower tropospheric radiative heating rate to positive values, generating a strong inhibition layer. Our work highlights an additional potential effect of absorbing aerosols, with implications for climate change mitigation and disaster risk management. Aerosol species that absorb solar radiation generate local warming of the atmosphere. This local warming changes the vertical profile of temperature and by that affects cloud and precipitation development. In this paper we use idealized computer simulations to investigate the effect of absorbing aerosols on precipitation, and specifically on extreme precipitation events in the tropics. We demonstrate that under certain conditions, absorbing aerosols can strongly enhance extreme precipitation even despite reducing the mean. We show that this trend can be explained by a mechanism previously reported for much warmer climate conditions than currently found on Earth, involving heating by radiation of the lower part of the troposphere. These results have implications for climate change mitigation and disaster risk management. Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas, poses a significant health risk by accumulating in buildings and potentially leading to lung cancer. Depending on building construction and geographical location, radon levels can vary substantially both within individual buildings and between different buildings. While previous studies have primarily focused on the impact of temperature and relative humidity on radon devices, the influence of aerosols remains largely unexplored. This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of the influence of indoor aerosol sources on the performance of real-time radon sensors, encompassing consumer, medium, and research-grade devices. Measurements were performed at relatively low (300 Bq/m3) and high (2'000-3'000 Bq/m3) radon levels in a controlled environment -- a stable atomic shelter with constant temperature and humidity conditions. Six different aerosols sources were introduced to produce aerosols of different sizes and concentrations. The results suggest that the tested indoor aerosols did not significantly influence the performance of radon devices, irrespective of their grade or detection method. Consequently, sensor performance and the radon levels being investigated may exert a more significant influence on the obtained results than aerosol levels alone. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the delivery of dental care globally. Air contamination during aerosol and splatter-generating procedures is of great concern to dental healthcare provider during these times. Extra oral suction (EOS) apparatus has been shown to be effective in preventing infection by control of aerosol. But very limited data is available regarding the efficacy of the apparatus in preventing splatter contamination. Objectives of the Study: To assess the efficacy of EOS apparatus in reducing frequency and mean intensity of splatter contamination at clinician, assistant, patient sites during lower third molar surgical procedures. Materials and Methods: Patients who required surgical removal of an impacted lower third molar were divided into two groups (EOS and non-EOS) with 20 patients each. Universal indicating paper (UIP) was placed in specific locations on the surgeon, patient, and assistant. Colour changes after the settling of splatter on the UIP were analyzed to calculate the percentage intensity of splatter contamination. Results: The use of an EOS device has shown an overall reduction in the total number of contaminated sites, with a difference of 6.36%. Surgeon, patient, and assistant sites showed reductions of 6.25, 10%, and 1.66%, respectively. The apparatus has showed statistically significant reduction of splatter frequency and intensity at the patient's chest and left shoulder regions respectively, during surgical removal of the impacted 48. Conclusion:The magnitude of splatter contamination during minor dentoalveolar surgical procedures is inevitable. The complexity of aerosol particle properties and the diversity of characterizations make aerosol vertical transport flux measurements and analysis difficult. Although there are different methods, such as aerosol particle number concentration flux and aerosol mass flux based on the eddy covariance principle as well as aerosol mass flux measurements based on the light-propagated large-aperture scintillation principle, there is a lack of mutual validation among the different methods. In this paper, a comparison of aerosol mass flux measurements based on the eddy covariance principle and aerosol mass flux measurements based on the light-propagated large-aperture scintillation principle is carried out. The key idea of aerosol mass flux measurements based on the light-propagated large-aperture scintillation principle is the determination of the imaginary part of the atmospheric equivalent refractive index structure parameter (AERISP). In this paper, we first compare the AERISPs measured by two different methods and then compare the aerosol mass vertical transport fluxes obtained by different methods. The experiments were conducted on the campus of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). A light propagation experiment was carried out between two tall buildings to obtain the imaginary and real parts of the AERISPs for the whole path, which in turn can be used to obtain the aerosol vertical transport flux. An updated visibility meter is installed on the meteorological tower in the middle of the light path, which is utilized to obtain the single-point visibility, which is then converted to the imaginary part of the atmospheric equivalent refractive index (AERI). The imaginary parts of the AERISP were obtained via spectral analysis with visibility data. The results show that the imaginary parts of the AERISPs obtained by different methods are in good agreement. The imaginary part of the AERI measured by the visibility meter and the vertical wind speed obtained by the ultrasonic anemometer were used for covariance calculations to obtain the aerosol vertical transport flux. The trends in aerosol vertical transport fluxes obtained by the different methods are consistent, and there are differences in some details, which may be caused by the inhomogeneity in the vertical transport of aerosol fluxes. The new-generation atmospheric environment monitoring satellite DQ-1, launched successfully in April 2022, carries the Aerosol and Carbon Detection Lidar (ACDL), which is capable of globally profiling aerosol and cloud optical properties with high accuracy. The ACDL/DQ-1 is a high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) that separates molecular backscatter signals using an iodine filter and has 532 nm polarization detection and dual-wavelength detection at 532 and 1064 nm, which can be utilized to derive aerosol optical properties. The methods have been specifically developed for data processing and optical property retrieval according to the specific characteristics of the ACDL system and are introduced in detail in this paper. Considering the different signal characteristics and different background noise behaviors of each channel during daytime and nighttime, the procedures of data pre-processing, denoising process and quality control are applied to the original measurement signals. The aerosol and cloud optical property products of the ACDL/DQ-1, including the total depolarization ratio, backscatter coefficient, extinction coefficient, lidar ratio and color ratio, can be calculated by the retrieval algorithms presented in this paper. Two measurement cases with use of the ACDL/DQ-1 on 27 June 2022 and the global averaged aerosol optical depth (AOD) from 1 June to 4 August 2022 are provided and analyzed, demonstrating the measurement capability of the ACDL/DQ-1. This research builds upon a previous study that explored the potential of the modified WIBS-4+ to selectively differentiate and detect different bioaerosol classes. The current work evaluates the influence of meteorological and air quality parameters on bioaerosol concentrations, specifically pollen and fungal spore dynamics. Temperature was found to be the most influential parameter in terms of pollen production and release, showing a strong positive correlation. Wind data analysis provided insights into the potential geographic origins of pollen and fungal spore concentrations. Fungal spores were primarily shown to originate from a westerly direction, corresponding to agricultural land use, whereas pollen largely originated from a North-easterly direction, corresponding to several forests. The influence of air quality was also analysed to understand its potential impact on the WIBS fluorescent parameters investigated. Most parameters had a negative association with fungal spore concentrations, whereas several anthropogenic influences showed notable positive correlations with daily pollen concentrations. This is attributed to similar driving forces (meteorological parameters) and geographical origins. In addition, the WIBS showed a significant correlation with anthropogenic pollutants originating from combustion sources, suggesting the potential for such modified spectroscopic instruments to be utilized as air quality monitors. Lubricating base oils have been extensively employed for producing various industrial and consumer products. Therefore, their environmental and health impacts should be carefully evaluated. Although there have been many reports on pulmonary cytotoxicity and inflammatory responses of inhaled lubricating base oils, their potential influences on pulmonary surfactant (PS) films that play an essential role in maintaining respiratory mechanics and pulmonary immunity remains largely unknown. Here a systematic study on the interactions between an animal-derived natural PS and aerosols of water and representative mineral and vegetable base oils is performed using a novel biophysical assessing technique called constrained drop surfactometry capable of providing in vitro simulations of normal tidal breathing and physiologically relevant temperature and humidity in the lung. It was found that the mineral oil aerosols can impose strong inhibitions to the biophysical property of PS film, while the airborne vegetable oils and water show negligible adverse effects within the studied concentration range. The inhibitory effect is originated from the strong hydrophobicity of mineral oil, which makes it able to disrupt the interfacial molecular ordering of both phospholipid and protein compositions and consequently suppress the formation of condensed phase and multilayer scaffolds in a PS film. Radiocarbon measurements of total carbon (TC) fraction of aerosol samples collected at the campus of the Comenius University in Bratislava (Slovakia) during 2022-2023 were carried out. Based on radiocarbon activity of these samples and a source apportionment model we have determined the relative proportion of fossil and non-fossil carbon in collected atmospheric aerosols. The carbon from non-fossil sources (biomass burning and biogenic emissions) was dominant in this time period, on average it formed 72% of carbon present in the aerosols from the atmosphere of Bratislava. The whole range of determined non-fossil fraction was relatively small as it varied only from 0.67 (August-September) to 0.82 (December-January). Atmospheric aerosol (including total suspended particulate (TSP) samples and fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) samples) and precipitation samples were collected in Qingdao from May 2020 to June 2021. The concentrations of metal elements on fog days were 0.28-0.56 times that on clean days; those on haze-fog (HF), haze and dust days were 0.76-2.7, 1.2-3.6 and 1.7-5.7 times those on clean days, respectively. Compared with that on clean days, the solubility of metals on fog, HF and haze days increased by 4 %-193 %, but that on dust days decreased by 1 %-62 %. The dry deposition fluxes of dissolved Al, Fe, Zn, Pb, Cu and Cd were the highest on HF or haze days, which were 2.2-15 times clean days. Nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) in ambient particles are of great concern due to their adverse effects on human health and climate. However, investigations on the characteristics and potential sources of NACs in Southwest China are still scarce. In this study, a field sampling campaign was carried out in the winter of 2022 at a suburban site in Mianyang, Southwest China. A direct injection liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was developed to rapidly determine 10 NACs in fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) extracts. The method was sensitive for the quantification of the NACs, with a limit of quantification (LOQ) in the range of 0.092-0.52 ng mL -1 . Then, the developed method was applied to determine the concentrations of nitrophenols (NPs), nitrocatechols (NCs), nitrosalicylic acids (NSAs), and nitronaphthol in PM 2.5 in Mianyang. The average concentration of total NACs was 78.2 ± 31.2 ng m -3 , with daily concentrations ranging from 20.7 to 127.9 ng m -3 . Among the measured NACs, 4-nitrocatechol was the most abundant, accounting for 57.8% of the NACs in winter. The five NPs compounds together contributed to 14% of the NACs, which was lower than in other Chinese cities due to the warm climate in winter in Southwest China. NSAs and nitronaphthol each accounted for less than 5% of the NACs. Three major sources of NACs were identified based on the principal component analysis, including vehicle emissions, biomass burning, and secondary formation. The significant correlation between individual NACs and NO 2 supported their secondary formation sources. The good correlation between NPs and cloud amount further suggested that gas-phase oxidation was the possible NPs formation mechanism. A two-stage model integrating a spatiotemporal linear mixed effect (STLME) and a geographic weight regression (GWR) model is proposed to improve the meteorological variables-based aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrieval method (Elterman retrieval model-ERM). The proposed model is referred to as the STG-ERM model. The STG-ERM model is applied over the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region in China for the years 2019 and 2020. The results show that data coverage increased by 39.0% in 2019 and 40.5% in 2020. Cross-validation of the retrieval results versus multi-angle implementation of atmospheric correction (MAIAC) AOD shows the substantial improvement of the STG-ERM model over earlier meteorological models for AOD estimation, with a determination coefficient (R 2 ) of daily AOD of 0.86, root mean squared prediction error (RMSE) and the relative prediction error (RPE) of 0.10 and 36.14% in 2019 and R 2 of 0.86, RMSE of 0.12 and RPE of 37.86% in 2020. The fused annual mean AOD indicates strong spatial variation with high value in south plain and low value in northwestern mountainous areas of the BTH region. The overall spatial seasonal mean AOD ranges from 0.441 to 0.586, demonstrating strongly seasonal variation. The coverage of STG-ERM retrieved AOD, as determined in this exercise by leaving out part of the meteorological data, affects the accuracy of fused AOD. The coverage of the meteorological data has smaller impact on the fused AOD in the districts with low annual mean AOD of less than 0.35 than that in the districts with high annual mean AOD of greater than 0.6. If available, continuous daily meteorological data with high spatiotemporal resolution can improve the model performance and the accuracy of fused AOD. Aerosol pollutants significantly cause health concerns. Herein, we established an original real-time aerosol exposure system that used a self-designed bionic-lung microfluidic chip. The chip features a 4 × 4 intersecting array within gas and liquid layers, creating 16 distinct microenvironments. A membrane situated between the layers offers attachment for cells and establishes a gas-liquid interface. This design provides a reliable screening capacity for investigating the biological effects of aerosol exposure in vitro by manipulating the gas and/or liquid conditions. Using this system, we validated that cigarette smoke (CS) aerosol triggered a concentration- and time-dependent reduction in cell viability and intracellular glutathione levels, accompanied by an increase in intracellular reactive oxygen species and Fe 2+ . Furthermore, CS aerosol significantly downregulated the expression of GPX4, SLC7A11, and FTL mRNA while inducing a notable increase in that of ACSL4 mRNA. Additionally, CS aerosol markedly stimulated the release of proinflammatory cytokines. Crucially, the ferroptosis inhibitor deferoxamine mesylate reversed these biological indicators. Characterization of aminoglycoside antibiotics like ribostamycin is important due to the complex composition and common toxic impurities. Aerosol detectors are often employed for determination of these non-absorbent analytes. In this work, a robust and cost-effective method was developed for simultaneous detection of ribostamycin and its related substances using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a relative new aerosol detector named nano-quantity analyte detector (NQAD). With the introduction of less toxic but more compatible ion-pairs pentafluoropropionic acid (PFPA) and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) in the eluent, an optimized separation effect was achieved. Compared with the other two aerosol detectors namely ELSD (evaporative light scattering detector) and CAD (charged aerosol detector), method verification and quantitative detection results revealed that NQAD had higher sensitivity than ELSD with a 0.8 μg/mL limit of detection, as well as wider linear range (from 2 μg/mL to 1000 μg/mL) than both CAD (from 2 μg/mL to 200 μg/mL) and ELSD (from 8 μg/mL to 200 μg/mL) detector. The performance of NQAD helped to realize detection of ribostamycin and its impurities with significant concentration differences in a single run. With a cation suppressor to eliminate the ion-suppression caused by the ion-pairs in the eluent, the structure of nine impurities in ribostamycin sample was characterized by liquid chromatography-mass spectrum (LC-MS). The effects of the surrounding environment on the bacterial composition of bioaerosol were well documented for polluted and contaminated sites. However, there is limited data on the impact of plant species, especially those that produce aromas, on bioaerosol composition at agricultural sites. Hence, the aim of this study is to evaluate the variability in bacterial communities present in bioaerosol samples collected from agricultural sites with aroma-producing crops. For this, PM 2.5 , PM 10, and bioaerosol samples were collected from agricultural fields growing Ocimum [two varieties of O. sanctum (CIM-Aayu and CIM-Angana)] and O. kilimandscharicum (Kapoor), nearby traffic junctions and suburban areas. PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations at the agricultural site were in between the other two polluted sites. However, bioaerosol concentration was lower at agricultural sites than at other sites. The culturable bacteria Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus tequilensis, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus were more prevalent in agricultural sites than in other areas. However, the composition of non-culturable bacteria varied between sites and differed in three fields where Ocimum was cultivated. The CIM-Aayu cultivated area showed a high bacterial richness, lower Simpson and Shannon indices, and a distinctive metabolic profile. The sites CIM-Angana and CIM-Kapoor had a higher abundance of Aeromonas, while Pantoea and Pseudomonas were present at CIM-Aayu. Acinetobacter, Staphylococcus, and Bacillus were the dominant genera at the other two sites. Metabolic profiling showed that the CIM-Aayu site had a higher prevalence of pathways related to amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism and environmental information processing compared to other sites. Dry powder inhalers (DPIs) are the first choice for inhalation drug development. However, some conventional DPI formulation processes require heating, which may damage high molecular weight drugs such as proteins and nucleic acids. In this study, we propose a novel DPI preparation process that avoids the use of heat. Dry powders were prepared by cryomilling nanofiber mats composed of polyvinyl alcohol, D(-)-mannitol (Man), and α-chymotrypsin (α-Chy) as the model drug using the electrospinning method. The addition of Man conferred high dispersibility and excellent in vitro aerosol performance to the nanofiber mat powder in a very short milling time (less than 0.5 min) as assessed using the Andersen cascade impactor. Powders were classified according to the degree of friability, and among these, nanofiber mats containing 15 % Man and milled for 0.25 min exhibited the highest aerosol performance. Nanofiber mats containing Man milled for less than 0.5 min also exhibited greater α-Chy enzymatic activity than a nebulized α-Chy solution. Furthermore, single inhalation induced no significant lung tissue damage as evidenced by lactate dehydrogenase activity assays of mouse bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. In vivo studies investigating the inhalative efficacy of biotherapeutics, such as nucleic acids, usually do not perform an aerosolization step, rather the solution is directly administered into the lungs e.g. intratracheally. In addition, there is currently very little information on the behavior of nucleic acid solutions when subjected to the physical stress of the nebulization process. In this study, the aim was to assess the technical suitability of Locked Nucleic Acids (LNAs), as a model antisense oligonucleotide, towards nebulization using two commercially available nebulizers. A jet nebulizer (Pari LC Plus) and a vibrating mesh nebulizer (Aerogen Solo) were employed and solutions of five different LNAs investigated in terms of their physical and chemical stability to nebulization and the quality of the generated aerosols. The aerosol properties of the Aerogen Solo were mainly influenced by the viscosity of the solutions with the output rate and the droplet size decreasing with increasing viscosity. The Pari LC Plus was less susceptible to viscosity and overall the droplet size was smaller. The LNAs tolerated both nebulization processes and the integrity of the molecules was shown. Chemical stability of the molecules from the Aerogen Solo was confirmed, whereas aerosol generation with the Pari LC Plus jet nebulizer led to a slight increase of phosphodiester groups in a fully phosphorothiolated backbone of the LNAs. Biosafety laboratories are critical in many fields. However, experimenters associated the infection risk from biological aerosols. In this study, by conducting experiments on the release and collection of bioaerosols within a typical BSL-2 + laboratory, the spatial distribution of bioaerosols was tracked. Numerical calculations were employed to obtain and visualize the airflow patterns and aerosol dispersion paths of four ventilation methods. The results indicated that equipment and tables led to uneven airflow distribution within the laboratory. The comparison results of the four evaluation indicators showed that the air age distribution of UU (Upward supply and upward return) mode and CD (Cross-supply and downward return) mode was superior, with air change efficiency values of 0.595 and 0.603, respectively. Additionally, the contaminant removal index of CD mode was 1.48, significantly higher than the other ventilation methods. The statistical results of the contaminant dispersion index also indicated that CD mode was most conducive to diluting aerosols in the spatial environment. The LD (lateral supply and downward return) mode may lead to airflow short-circuiting. The UD (upward supply and downward return) mode can provide balanced protection for laboratory. High uncertainty in optical properties of black carbon (BC) involving heterogeneous chemistry has recently attracted increasing attention in the field of atmospheric climatology. To fill the gap in BC optical knowledge so as to estimate more accurate climate effects and serve the response to global warming, it is beneficial to conduct site-level studies on BC light absorption enhancement (E abs ) characteristics. Real-time surface gas and particulate pollutant observations during the summer and winter over Wuhan were utilized for the analysis of E abs simulated by minimum R squared (MRS), considering two distinct atmospheric conditions (2015 and 2017). In general, differences in aerosol emissions led to E abs differential behaviors. The summer average of E abs (1.92 ± 0.55) in 2015 was higher than the winter average (1.27 ± 0.42), while the average (1.11 ± 0.20) in 2017 summer was lower than that (1.67 ± 0.69) in winter. E abs and R BC (representing the mass ratio of non-refractory constituents to elemental carbon) constraints suggest that E abs increased with the increase in R BC under the ambient condition enriched by secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA), with a maximum growth rate of 70.6% in 2015 summer. However, E abs demonstrated a negative trend against R BC in 2017 winter due to the more complicated mixing state. The result arose from the opposite impact of hygroscopic SIA and absorbing OC/irregular distributed coatings on amplifying the light absorbency of BC. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis revealed a robust positive correlation (R > 0.9) between aerosol chemical compositions (including sulfate, nitrate, ammonium and secondary organic carbon), which could be significantly perturbed by only a small fraction of absorbing materials or restructuring BC through gaps filling. The increasing air pollution in the urban atmosphere is adversely impacts the environment, climate and human health. The alarming degradation of air quality, atmospheric conditions, economy and human life due to air pollution needs significant in-depth studies to ascertain causes, contributions and impacts for developing and implementing an effective policy to combat these issues. This work lies in its multifaceted approach towards comprehensive understanding and mitigating severe pollution episodes in Delhi and its surrounding areas. We investigated the aerosol dynamics in the post-monsoon season (PMS) from 2019 to 2022 under the influence of both crop residue burning and meteorological conditions. The study involves a broad spectrum of factors, including PM2.5 concentrations, active fire events, and meteorological parameters, shedding light on previously unexplored studies. The average AOD550 (0.79) and PM2.5 concentration (140.12 μg/m³) were the highest in 2019. PM2.5 was higher from mid-October to mid-November each year, exceeding the WHO guideline of 15 μg/m³ (24 h) by 27-34 times, signifying a public health emergency. A moderate to strong correlation between PM2.5 and AOD was found (r = 0.65) in 2021. The hotspot region accounts for almost 50% (2019), 47.51% (2020), 57.91% (2021) and 36.61% (2022) of the total fire events. A statistically significant negative non-linear correlation (r) was observed between wind speed (WS) and both AOD and PM2.5 concentration, influencing air quality over the region. HYSPLIT model and Windrose result show the movement of air masses predominated from the North and North-West direction during PMS. Air quality considerably affects bioaerosol dynamics within the atmosphere. Frequent haze events, with their associated alterations in bioaerosol composition, may pose potential health risks. This study investigated the microbial diversity, community structure, and factors of PM 2.5 within an urban environment. We further examined the impact of haze on potentially pathogenic bacteria in bioaerosols, and analyzed the sources of haze pollution. Key findings revealed that the highest levels of microbial richness and diversity were associated with lightly polluted air conditions. While the overall bacterial community structure remained relatively consistent across different air quality levels, the relative abundance of specific bacterial taxa exhibited variations. Meteorological and environmental conditions, particularly sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and carbon monoxide, exerted a greater influence on bacterial diversity and community structure compared to the physicochemical properties of the PM 2.5 particles themselves. Notably, haze events were observed to strengthen interactions among airborne pathogens. Stable carbon isotope analysis suggested that coal combustion and automobile exhaust were likely to represent the primary source of haze during winter months. Rapid detection of airborne pathogens is crucial in preventing respiratory infections and allergies. However, technologies aiming to real-time analysis of microorganisms in air remain limited due to the sparse and complex nature of bioaerosols. Here, we introduced an online bioaerosol monitoring system (OBMS) comprised of integrated units including a rotatable stainless-steel sintered filter-based sampler, a lysis unit for extracting adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and a single photon detector-based fluorescence unit. Through optimization of the ATP bioluminescence method and establishment of standard curves between relative luminescence units (RLUs) and ATP as well as microbial concentration, we achieved simultaneous detection of bioaerosols' concentration and activity. Testing OBMS with four bacterial and two fungal aerosols at a sampling flow rate of 10 to 50 L/min revealed an outstanding collection efficiency of 95 % at 30 L/min. A single OBMS measurement takes only 8 min (sampling: 5 min; lysis and detection: 3 min) with detection limits of 3 Pcs/ms photons (2.9 × 10 3 and 292 CFU/m 3 for Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans aerosol). In both laboratory and field tests, OBMS detected higher concentrations of bioaerosol compared to the traditional Andersen impactor and liquid biosampler. When combined OBMS with loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), the bioaerosol can be qualitative and quantitative analyzed within 40 min without the cumbersome procedures of sample pretreatment and DNA extraction. The Earth's atmosphere contains ultrafine particles known as aerosols, which can be either liquid or solid particles suspended in gas. These aerosols originate from both natural sources and human activities, termed primary and secondary sources respectively. They have significant impacts on the environment, particularly when they transform into ultrafine particles or aerosol nanoparticles, due to their extremely fine atomic structure. With this context in mind, this review aims to elucidate the fundamentals of atmospheric-derived aerosol nanoparticles, covering their various sources, impacts, and methods for control and management. Natural sources such as marine, volcanic, dust, and bioaerosols are discussed, along with anthropogenic sources like the combustion of fossil fuels, biomass, and industrial waste. Airborne bacteria along with chemical composition of aerosols were investigated during five sampling seasons at an offshore island of the East China Sea. Bacterial diversity was the lowest in spring, the highest in winter, and similar between the autumns of 2019 and 2020, suggesting remarkably seasonal variation but little interannual change. Geodermatophilus (Actinobacteria) was the indicator genus of mineral dust (MD) showed higher proportion in spring than in other seasons. Mastigocladopsis&#95;PCC-10914 (Cyanobacteria) as the indicator of sea salt (SS) demonstrated the highest percentages in both autumns, when the air masses mainly passed over the ocean prior to the sampling site. The higher proportions of soil-derived genera Rubellimicrobium and Craurococcus (both Proteobacteria) and extremophile Chroococcidiopsis&#95;SAG&#95;2023 (Cyanobacteria) were found in summer and winter, respectively. Dry hitting, a phenomenon produced by e-cigarettes with refillable cartridges when the liquid in the coil is low, is a common occurrence among regular vapers despite being an unintended consequence of the device. This phenomenon's hazard to public health is still unknown and needs further investigation. Lung cells cultured at the air-liquid interface were exposed to vaped aerosol consisting of 3 % w/v ethyl maltol in propylene glycol for three-second puffs every 30 seconds for 80 total puffs with either dry hit or saturated conditions. Cytotoxicity was measured colorimetrically. The thermal degradation of the heating coils and wicks was visualized using scanning electron microscopy. The chemical byproducts in the aerosol were analyzed using proton nuclear magnetic resonance and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The results revealed a highly significant increase in cytotoxicity from dry hit treatments. Imaging showed thermal decomposition of the cotton wick after dry hitting, which was confirmed by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy with less oxygen in the dry hit cotton. Chemical byproducts were found via unique peaks in the dry hit condensate in the aromatic and alkene regions. Saturated condensate showed higher concentrations of detected metal species than dry-hit condensate. Previous in vitro toxicological assessments have demonstrated that almost no mutagenic and genotoxic activities in electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) and heated tobacco product (HTP) aerosols were detected even at the maximum recommended concentration. To accurately compare the toxicity levels between cigarette smoke and e-cigarette or HTP aerosols, higher exposure concentrations increasing the possibility to detect toxicity in in vitro tests are necessary, while avoiding solvent-induced toxicity. This study aimed to develop a solvent-free extraction method to obtain concentrated aerosol extracts for improved toxicological evaluation. Our novel approach involved squeezing several Cambridge filter pads, which collected aerosol constituents, in closed containers to achieve solvent-free extraction with comparable efficiency to the conventional method using organic solvents. The optimized squeezing method yielded extracts with concentrations approximately 10 times higher than those obtained in conventional extraction methods. Yield comparison of various constituents, such as flavoring compounds, in e-cigarette aerosol extracts revealed similar extraction efficiencies between the squeezing and conventional methods. However, the extraction efficiency for constituents with high log P ow values, predominantly found in HTP aerosol extracts, was unacceptably low using the squeezing method. In addition, solvent-free centrifuging, another type of extraction method, exhibited unsatisfactory results for even e-cigarette aerosols compared with the conventional method. Our findings suggest that the solvent-free squeezing method is suitable for extracting aerosol collected mass from e-cigarette aerosol but not from HTP aerosol. Bioaerosols released from municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWWTPs) contain pathogenic microorganisms, if dispersed into the atmosphere, which pose potential health risks to humans. In this study, the concentrations and size distribution of bioaerosol, factors on the bioaerosol emission, exposure risk, and microbial composition in different treatment units of a MWWTP were investigated. The results showed that bioaerosol was released to different degrees in each treatment unit, with the concentrations of bioaerosol varied widely, ranging from 978 to 3710 CFU/m 3 . FG and PST were primary bioaerosol emission sources in MWWTP. COD concentration, wind speed (WS) and relative humidity (RH) significantly influenced bioaerosol concentrations. The proportion of inhalable particles (< 4.7 μm) ranged from 51.35 % to 83.33 %, and bioaerosol emitted from WWTP caused a non-carcinogenic risk to children by the exposure risk assessment (HI > 1), which need to be paid more attention. Bacterial, fungal and actinomycete aerosols were detected in each treatment unit of MWWTP. Among these bioaerosols, bacterial aerosol was dominant. Importantly, several pathogenic bacteria including Sphingobium, Brevundimonas, Romboutsia, Arcobacter, Acinetobacter, and Mycobacterium were identified within the airborne bacteria population, most of which originated from wastewater or sludge, particularly in the ambient air of AeT. High levels of bioaerosols may exist in the air of municipal solid waste (MSW) management facilities, constituting a significant occupational hazard for workers. In this study, we investigated the potential association between exposure to bioaerosols and inflammatory biomarkers among municipal solid waste workers (MSWWs) at both the landfill site and the municipal solid waste transfer station (MSWTS), in comparison to a control group without exposure. Air sampling was conducted at six points around the landfill, two points at the MSWTS, and one point in a public park (as a control area) during the spring and summer of 2019. The results of our study revealed that airborne pathogens were highly prevalent at the sampling points, especially in the active zone and leachate collection pond. Aspergillus species were the predominant fungal species detected in this study, with the highest occurrence observed for Aspergillus flavus (83.3%), Aspergillus niger, and Aspergillus fumigatus (75.0%). Furthermore, Staphylococcus species accounted for over 75% of the total bacterial bioaerosols detected across all study areas. The blood test results of workers revealed a significant increase in platelets (PLT), immunoglobulin G (IgG), white blood cells (WBC), neutrophils, basophils, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) compared to the control group. Conversely, platelet distribution width (PDW), mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet-large cell ratio (P-LCR) in the exposed subjects exhibited a decreasing trend compared to the control group. These findings suggest a potential association between exposure to bioaerosols, particularly in the vicinity of open dumpsites, and elevated levels of hematologic and inflammatory markers in circulation. Household garbage rooms release abundant bioaerosols and are an important source of pathogens; however, information on the distribution and survival patterns of pathogens in different waste components is limited. In this study, a culture method and 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing were used to determine bacterial communities, culturable pathogens, and human bacterial pathogens (HBPs). The results showed that abundant culturable bacteria were detected in all waste types, and a large number of S. aureus was detected on the surface of recyclable wastes, whereas S. aureus, total coliforms, Salmonella, Enterococcus, and hemolytic bacteria were detected in food waste and other waste. The activities of these detected pathogenic bacteria decreased after 24 h of storage but re-activated within one week. Factors affecting the emergence of pathogens varied with different waste components. Sequencing results showed that Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, and Burkholderia were abundant in the waste samples, whereas Achromobacter, Exiguobacteriums, Bordetella, and Corynebacterium were the primary pathogens in the bioaerosol and wall attachment. The results of traceability analysis showed that bioaerosol microbes were mainly derived from raw kitchen waste (5.98%) and plastic and paper contaminated with food waste (19.93%) in garbage rooms. In addition, bioaerosols were the main source of microflora in the wall attachment, which possessed high HBP diversity and required more attention. The aerodynamic sizes of bioaerosols may significantly affect their behaviors, respiratory deposition and biodiversity. The respirable bacterial size, biodiversity, and human-associated bacteria (HAB) related bioaerosols were evaluated at three kindergartens in Taiwan. Kindergartens A, B, and C were in urban, semi-urban, and rural areas, respectively. A six-stage viable Andersen cascade impactor was used to collect bioaerosols and to determine their size distributions. The geometric mean diameter (GMD), geometric standard deviation (GSD), heat maps, and uniformity were used to evaluate the association of bacteria characteristics. A BD Phoenix-100 automated interpretation system was used to identify the airborne bacteria species. The results revealed that 1425 colonies of the sampled airborne bacteria contained 63 species in 29 genera, and overall, 63.0% were HABs. The most abundant phylum was Actinobacteria (56.6 ± 22.2%) and Firmicutes (31.6 ± 22.3%), and from the taxonomic analysis, both airborne Micrococcus and the Staphylococcus aureus are the dominant genus. All the bacteria aerodynamic particle size distributions were polydisperse distributions. The heat map and uniformity analysis had revealed most of the sampled bioaerosols distributed between 1.1-3.3 μm, and most of the polydisperse airborne Streptococcus spp. had a size in the respirable range, due to urbanization, they have potentially contributed to respiratory risk in the kindergartens. The Shannon diversity index (H) and inverse Simpson diversity index (D) of the bioaerosols in urban kindergarten were negatively correlated with GMD and GSD. The Pearson correlations revealed that the kindergarten in the rural area, with a higher temperature, a lower relative humidity, and a lower CO 2 concentration than the others, tended to have the largest H and D values (P < 0.05). Multiple and stepwise regression revealed that bioaerosol aerodynamic size was statistically significantly correlated with H (P = 0.001) and D values (P = 0.002). The Yellow Sea, characterized by an influx of both natural marine and anthropogenic pollutants, coupled with favorable photochemical conditions, serve as key sites for potential interactions between atmospheric gases and aerosols. A recent air monitoring campaign in the Yellow Sea revealed aerosol contributions from four sources, with the highest mass concentrations and dominance of NO 3 (38.1 ± 0.37 %) during winds from China. Indications of potential secondary aerosol formation were observed through the presence of hydrolysis and oxidation products of nitrate and volatile organic compounds. An earlier study evaluating dust life cycle in the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) Atmosphere Model version 1 (EAMv1) has revealed that the simulated global mean dust lifetime is substantially shorter when higher vertical resolution is used, primarily due to significant strengthening of dust dry removal in source regions. This paper demonstrates that the sequential splitting of aerosol emissions, dry removal, and turbulent mixing in the model's time integration loop, especially the calculation of dry removal after surface emissions and before turbulent mixing, is the primary reason for the vertical resolution sensitivity reported in that earlier study. Based on this reasoning, we propose a revised numerical process coupling scheme that requires the least amount of code changes, in which the surface emissions are applied before turbulent mixing instead of before dry removal. The revised scheme allows newly emitted particles to be transported aloft by turbulence before being removed from the atmosphere, and hence better resembles the dust life cycle in the real world. Sensitivity experiments show that the revised process coupling substantially weakens dry removal and strengthens vertical mixing in dust source regions. It also strengthens the large-scale transport from source to non-source regions, strengthens dry removal outside the source regions, and strengthens wet removal and activation globally. In transient simulations of the years 2000–2009 conducted using 1 ∘ horizontal grid spacing, 72 vertical layers, and unchanged tuning parameters of emission strength, the revised process coupling leads to a 40 % increase in the global total dust burden and an increase of dust lifetime from 1.8 to 2.5 d in terms of 10-year averages. Weakened dry removal and increased mixing ratios are also seen for other aerosol species that have substantial surface emissions, although the changes in mixing ratio are considerably smaller for the submicron species than for dust and sea salt. Numerical experiments confirm that the revised coupling scheme significantly reduces the strong and non-physical sensitivities of model results to vertical resolution in the original EAMv1. The Earth Cloud Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) is a satellite mission implemented by the European Space Agency (ESA) in cooperation with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to measure vertical profiles of aerosols, clouds, and precipitation properties together with radiative fluxes and derived heating rates. The data will be used in particular to evaluate the representation of clouds, aerosols, precipitation, and associated radiative fluxes in weather forecasting and climate models. The satellite embarks four instruments: the ATmospheric LIDar (ATLID), the Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR), the Multi-Spectral Imager (MSI), and the Broadband Radiometer (BBR). The science data acquired by the four satellite instruments are processed on ground. Calibrated instrument data – level 1 data products – and retrieved geophysical data products – level 2 data products – are produced in the ESA and JAXA ground segments. This paper provides an overview of the data processing chains of ESA and JAXA and explains the instrument level 1 data products and main aspects of the calibration algorithms. Pollen, a significant natural bioaerosol and allergen for sensitized individuals, is expected to increase in prevalence due to climate change. Mitigating allergy symptoms involves avoiding pollen exposure and pre-medication, emphasizing the importance of real-time knowledge of localized ambient air pollen concentrations. Laser diode Optical Particle Counters (OPCs) are commonly used for monitoring particle number concentrations in ambient air. This study explores the hypothesis that OPCs can monitor pollen but may struggle to distinguish them from other particles. We aimed to isolate the pollen signal from collective particle number concentrations using source apportionment models, specifically Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) and Unmix, applied to multiple bin OPC data. The pollen signals isolated using PMF show slightly better correlation values than those isolated using Unmix. PMF-derived pollen signals exhibit strong correlations with Holoptelea (r = 0.64) and total pollen (r = 0.54) concentrations, while a moderate correlation is observed with Poaceae (r = 0.47). Exclusion of low pollen events strengthens correlations for Holoptelea and Poaceae to very strong (r = 0.87) and strong (r = 0.67), respectively. Although both model types effectively isolate the pollen signal, metrics suggest that Unmix has the potential for more accurate predictions of both moderate and extreme pollen events simultaneously. The Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and Relative Root Mean Square Error (RRMSE) metrics for Holoptelea are 46.2 grains m -3 , 72.4 grains m -3 , and 15.3; for Poaceae, 3.9 grains m -3 , 4.9 grains m -3 , and 13.0; and for total pollen, 43.5 grains m -3 , 72.1 grains m -3 , and 14.1. This study represents a significant development in the use of source apportionment models and ambient OPCs for real-time pollen monitoring, offering a cost-effective alternative to conventional automated pollen sensors. Pulmonary delivery is an efficient route of administration to deliver cannabidiol (CBD) due to the high bioavailability and fast onset of action. The major formulation challenge is the poor aqueous solubility of CBD. This study aimed to produce inhalable CBD powders with enhanced solubility and characterise their solid-state properties. CBD was spray freeze dried with mannitol or trehalose dihydrate with and without dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC). All four powders had acceptable yields at > 70 % with porous and spherical particles. The two crystalline mannitol powders contained less residual solvent than both amorphous trehalose ones. The addition of DPPC did not affect the crystallinity and residual solvent level of the powders. Instead, DPPC made the particles more porous, decreased the particle size from 19-23 µm to 11-13 µm, and increased CBD solubility from 0.36 µg/mL to over 2 µg/mL. The two DPPC powders were dispersed from a low resistance RS01 inhaler, showing acceptable aerosol performance with emitted fractions at 91-93 % and fine particle fractions < 5 µm at 34-43 %. This study performed a back-trajectory analysis to determine the influence of transboundary transport on the extent of aerosol pollution in South Korea, based on 5-year PM 2.5 measurements (2015-2019) in five cities covering South Korea. A transboundary transport case was selected if a back trajectory passed over a dedicated region (BOX 1 and BOX 2) in the Yellow Sea. First, we found that the frequency of transboundary transport largely increases in the high pollution case, and this pattern is almost consistent for all months and all five cities, indicating the importance of investigating the horizontal direction of air mass movement associated with PM 2.5 , which has been discussed extensively in previous studies. In this study, we also examined the altitude change and straight moving distance (defined as travel distance) of back trajectories regarding the extent of local PM 2.5 . Consequently, we found that back trajectories in high aerosol pollution showed much lower altitudes and shorter travel differences, implying a significant contribution of surface emissions and stagnant air conditions to severe aerosol pollution. As a result, the local PM 2.5 level was not significantly enhanced when the air mass passed over the Yellow Sea if transboundary transport occurred at high altitudes with rapid movement (i.e., high altitude and long travel distance back-trajectory).
