The practitioner-patient interview has been the subject of several studies in the world of medicine and in the field of teaching languages for specific purposes It has been considered one of the most critical oral genres in language teaching for medical-health purposes. Every health professional has to know and understand why the patient has come for a consultation; they must have the necessary skills to obtain as much information about the patient's health problem as possible, and if necessary, they have to perform a physical examination. The practitioner-patient interview is divided into several steps. Each step consists of a specific task with its specific objectives for the practitioner. For about fifteen years, the French Language Centre of McGill University, an English-speaking university in Montreal, Canada, has been offering French courses to students specializing in different areas of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Social Work who wish to do their clinical placements and pursue their professional career in the province of Quebec. Most of McGill’s students are native English speakers from different parts of Canada and the United States or international students whose first language is not necessarily English. One of the most important oral genres which must be taught to these students is the practitioner-patient interview in French, since one of their principal tasks as healthcare professionals will to interact with patients. Furthermore, students who have obtained a degree in any healthcare profession from an English-speaking university in the French-speaking province of Quebec must take a French language exam offered by the Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF). In one of the activities of this exam, the candidates must interview a patient or a caregiver in French. Therefore, this constitutes another reason to teach the practitioner-patient interview to our students. Unfortunately, there is little extant literature on how to teach students to carry out a practitioner-patient interview in French as a second language. Moreover, the possibility of recording actual interviews for use in class is practically impossible to respect patient confidentiality. This paper aims to share with the scientific community and with other language for specific purposes instructors how the practitioner-patient interview is taught at McGill University to non-native French speakers who wish to work in Quebec. This article is an overview and reflection of the findings of an evaluative study conducted on a program called "Techno-Covid Partnership" (TCP) implemented in April 2020 at the Centre Hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CHUM) in Montreal, Canada. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the CHUM decided in April 2020 to implement telehealth, virtual care, and telemonitoring platforms and technologies to maintain access to care and reduce the risks of contamination and spread of COVID-19 as well as to protect users of health services and health professionals. Three technological platforms for telehealth and remote care and monitoring have been developed, implemented, and evaluated in real-time within the framework of the TCP program. A cross-sectional study was carried out in which a questionnaire was used and administered to users of telehealth platforms including patients and healthcare professionals. The methods and results of the study have been published previously published. In the completion of the two articles published in this context, in this paper, we briefly recall the context of the study and the method performed. The main focus of the paper is on presenting a critical overview and reflection on the major findings of our evaluation of the use of telehealth platforms from the point of view of patients and health professionals and discuss certain paradoxes i.e., the advantages, challenges, recommendations, and other perspectives that emerged in this study. Combined sewer overflow (CSO) control strategies are commonly selected relying on optimization or multicriteria analysis. A methodology is proposed in this paper for selecting and evaluating the solutions to mitigate stormwater problems in combined sewer systems (CSSs) based on the understanding and rigorous diagnosis of the causes of the observed problems using hydrological/hydraulic simulations. The methodology was applied to a sewer catchment near Montreal (Canada) in order to reduce the magnitude and recurrence of sewer surcharge and local flooding without increasing the recurrence of CSOs. Two types of control strategies were considered: (1) large-scale solutions, i.e., redirection of stormwater inflows and separation of the CSS; and (2) source control solutions including both green and gray infrastructure. These solutions were evaluated through a comparative analysis of nine scenarios. Based on the results, source control solutions could be considered as the most effective interventions on the studied catchment for eliminating or significantly reducing the occurrence of sewer surcharge (from an average of 6.7 to 2.6) and surface flooding on local streets (from an average of 3.5 to 0.4 per year). The global population continues to grow, which expands demand for raw materials. Meanwhile, governments are developing circular economy strategies within cities and their industries. A circular economy utilizes refurbishing, reusing, remanufacturing, and repairing of products and materials. For companies, this involves to set targets and to rethink their supply chain. This paper seeks to model an exhaustive multi-echelon closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) network. This network functions within uncertainty, and the model optimizes three different objectives. The first objective function maximizes the network's profit; the second objective function minimizes network emissions. The last objective function maximizes job positions created by the network. Optimizing three contradicting objectives is a problem, so an augmented epsilon constraint method is applied to improve the model. Given the rise of fast fashion in developed countries, this model is used in the clothing industry in Montreal, Canada. The model includes three scenarios over five years with two types of products. The result shows the attractiveness of such a network for companies looking for profit, sustainability, and entrepreneurship in the garment industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research on microscopic bicycle flow parameters (speed, headway, spacing, and density) is limited given the lack of methods to collect data in large quantities automatically. This paper introduces a novel methodology to compute bicycle flow parameters based on a LiDAR system composed of two single-beam sensors. Instantaneous mid-block raw speed for each cyclist in the traffic stream is measured using LiDAR sensor signals at seven bidirectional and three unidirectional cycling facilities. A Multilayer Perception Neural Network is proposed to improve the accuracy of speed measures. The LiDAR system computes the headway and spacing between consecutive cyclists using time-stamped detections and speed values. Estimation of density is obtained using spacing. For model calibration and testing, 101 hours of video data collected at ten mid-block sites are used. The performance of the cyclist speed estimation is evaluated by comparing it to ground truth video. When the dataset is randomly split into training and test sets, the RMSE and MAPE of the speed estimation method on the test set are 0.61 m/s and 7.1%, respectively. In another scenario, when the model is trained with nine of the ten sites and tested on data from the remaining site, the RMSE and MAPE are 0.69 m/s and 8.2%, respectively. Lastly, the relationships governing hourly flow rate, average speed, and estimated density are studied. The degradation of a concrete structure in northern climate is mainly due to the corrosion of steel reinforcements and cumulative damages from mechanical loading. Infrastructure managers heavily rely on ratings obtained from visual field surveys and the interpretation of inspection reports to predict the future structure states and to plan appropriate maintenance and replacement activities. In this paper, an effective structure management framework is proposed, combining information from on-site visual inspections and predictions from a nonlinear chloride transport model, to improve diagnostics for preventive maintenance. Meaningful predictions were obtained by using climatic data from neighboring weather stations and characterising the concrete transport properties with non-destructive tests. The chloride profiles from the model can be validated with core-drilled samples, if available. Predictions from the model were used to estimate the probability of the corrosion initiation and the condition states of the structural elements to complement the visual inspection observations. Finally, the ratings of each element were combined to obtain a global rating of the structure by considering the relative criticality of each element for the safety and the performance of the structure. This paper examines the growth of the Olympic Games against that of former host cities to understand whether this mega-event may have 'outgrown' its hosts. The increasing hosting requirements and governments' expansive use of mega-events as tools for urban development would suggest that the 'Olympic city' – a term we use for describing the size of the Olympics as hosted in different cities over the decades – has grown at a faster rate than former host cities. The analysis contrasts historical indicators that capture the evolving size of planning for the event based on four dimensions – sport, spectators, marketing and costs – as well as the urban dimension of hosting experiences (venues and infrastructure) with city trajectories based on demographic and economic indicators. This is done through a longitudinal analysis of former Olympic host cities from the 1960s and 1970s and from which continuous longitudinal data are available: Tokyo, Munich, and Montreal. The findings indicate that the Olympic city has grown more strongly than these former host cities, although not uniformly across trajectories. This gives evidence for the need to review the size of mega-event impacts if they ought to continue to generate interest in hosting them in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large-scale agent-based microsimulation platforms, increasingly used in transportation demand modelling, require fully enumerated and spatialized lists of the population and its sociodemographic characteristics as input. The quality of the synthetic population, measured as its ability to reproduce the sociodemographic characteristics of the real population and their spatial distributions, is thus a determinant factor of the model reliability. While many efforts were devoted to improving the sociodemographic accuracy of synthetic populations, less attention was paid to perfecting their spatial precision. Conventional spatialized population synthesis methods, where the generation and spatialization processes are separated, are vulnerable to inconsistencies between zonal synthetic populations, and the built environments on which they are then distributed. These methods also present transferability issues that lie in their high reliance on rich spatialized datasets and knowledge of the local context. Hence, we propose an integrated multiresolution framework (IMF) that overcomes the limitations of the conventional framework (CF) by its ability to directly generate synthetic populations at the building resolution with minimal data requirements. The IMF includes an extension of an optimization-based method to multiresolution applications where any number and aggregation of spatial resolutions can efficiently be controlled. The CF and the IMF are applied to generate synthetic populations for Montreal, Canada. We define and measure sociodemographic accuracy, spatial precision, overall quality, and building-resolution fit of the synthetic populations to compare the frameworks' performances. Despite a small loss in accuracy, the IMF achieves drastically better spatial precision, overall quality and building-resolution fit of synthetic populations, compared to the CF. The passing of Professor Arthur Getis in May of 2022 initiated a number of events to both reflect on and remember the tremendous contributions he has made over his career to geographical systems more broadly, but also spatial analysis, spatial statistics, regional science, geography and GIScience, among others. This began with a series of sessions at the North American Regional Science Council meetings held in Montreal, Canada in November of 2022, followed by an invitation from the editors of Journal of Geographical Systems, Manfred Fischer, Antonio Paez, and Petra Staufer-Steinnocher, to organize a special issue in his honor. Soon thereafter, an open call was initiated to solicit submissions to this special issue, seeking original contributions that overlap and complement the broad range of research undertaken by Professor Getis over a distinguished career and life. This paper offers an overview of prominent geographical systems work carried out by Professor Getis. Reflections on his many contributions are also detailed. Traffic accidents are among the most common causes of death worldwide. According to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), 50 million people are involved in traffic accidents every year. Canada, particularly Montreal, is not immune to this problem. Data from the Société de l'Assurance Automobile du Québec (SAAQ) show that there were 392 deaths on Québec roads in 2022, 38 of them related to the city of Montreal. This value represents an increase of 29.3% for the city of Montreal compared with the average for the years 2017 to 2021. In this context, it is important to take concrete measures to improve traffic safety in the city of Montreal. In this article, we present a web-based solution based on machine learning that predicts the severity of traffic accidents in Montreal. This solution uses a dataset of traffic accidents that occurred in Montreal between 2012 and 2021. By predicting the severity of accidents, our approach aims to identify key factors that influence whether an accident is serious or not. Understanding these factors can help authorities implement targeted interventions to prevent severe accidents and allocate resources more effectively during emergency responses. Classification algorithms such as eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), Categorical Boosting (CatBoost), Random Forest (RF), and Gradient Boosting (GB) were used to develop the prediction model. Performance metrics such as precision, recall, F1 score, and accuracy were used to evaluate the prediction model. The performance analysis shows an excellent accuracy of 96% for the prediction model based on the XGBoost classifier. The other models (CatBoost, RF, GB) achieved 95%, 93%, and 89% accuracy, respectively. The prediction model based on the XGBoost classifier was deployed using a client–server web application managed by Swagger-UI, Angular, and the Flask Python framework. This study makes significant contributions to the field by employing an ensemble of supervised machine learning algorithms, achieving a high prediction accuracy, and developing a real-time prediction web application. This application enables quicker and more effective responses from emergency services, potentially reducing the impact of severe accidents and improving overall traffic safety. Urban mobility infrastructures have a major impact on the everyday life of city residents. Not only their mobility, but also their health, enjoyment of life and development of lifestyle preferences are affected by them. However, inclusive participation in infrastructure planning processes is difficult to achieve. We explore a foresight approach that develops desirable urban visions that involve residents in the preparation of decisions that will impact their lives. We propose future-oriented co-design workshops for the operationalisation of a capabilitarian focus on conscientisation, conciliation and collaboration to involve citizens in the visioning of infrastructure planning. The study is based on future-oriented codesign workshops held in Montreal in 2022–2023. Residents were invited to evaluate and discuss various future scenarios that re-imagine a highway currently cutting through the city. The results show the capabilitarian co-design workshops to promote critical thinking, vision creation and to a lesser extent collaboration in the discussions triggered by the future-oriented codesign workshops. The results also reveal the difficulties of making such discussions truly inclusive, as well as their ambivalent relation to urban planning processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates long-term trends of criteria air pollutants, including NO 2 , CO, SO 2 , O 3 and PM 2.5 , and O x (meaning NO 2+ O 3) measured in 10 Canadian cities during the last 2 to 3 decades. We also investigated associated driving forces in terms of emission reductions, perturbations due to varying weather conditions and large-scale wildfires, as well as changes in O 3 sources and sinks. Two machine learning methods, the random forest algorithm and boosted regression trees, were used to extract deweathered mixing ratios (or mass concentrations) of the pollutants. The Mann–Kendall trend test of the deweathered and original annual average concentrations of the pollutants showed that, on the timescale of 20 years or longer, perturbation due to varying weather conditions on the decadal trends of the pollutants are minimal (within ±2%) in about 70 % of the studied cases, although it might be larger (but at most 16 %) in the remaining cases. NO 2 , CO and SO 2 showed decreasing trends in the last 2 to 3 decades in all the cities except CO in Montréal. O 3 showed increasing trends in all the cities except Halifax, mainly due to weakened titration reaction between O 3 and NO. O x , however, showed decreasing trends in all the cities except Victoria, because the increase in O 3 is much less than the decrease in NO 2. In three of the five eastern Canadian cities, emission reductions dominated the decreasing trends in PM 2.5 , but no significant trends in PM 2.5 were observed in the other two cites. In the five western Canadian cities, increasing or no significant trends in PM 2.5 were observed, likely due to unpredictable large-scale wildfires overwhelming or balancing the impacts of emission reductions on PM 2.5. In addition, despite improving air quality during the last 2 decades in most cities, an air quality health index of above 10 (representing a very high risk condition) still occasionally occurred after 2010 in western Canadian cities because of the increased large-scale wildfires. This paper presents a heuristic model predictive control (MPC) methodology to activate energy flexibility in fully electric school buildings in cold climates to reduce electricity demand during peak demand periods of the electric grid. To streamline the implementation of MPC, the proposed approach employs grey-box archetypes, a clustering of weather conditions to identify typical scenarios and a limited number of possible setpoint profiles. A data-driven grey-box approach is used to create archetype models for different thermal zones in a typical school building; this approach enables rapid development and requires much less calibration data than black-box models. A third-order resistance-capacitance thermal network for zones with convective heating and a fourth-order model for zones with radiant floor heating are developed and calibrated using measured data from an all-electric school building in Québec, Canada. The weather data are clustered into several categories, representing different weather conditions (6 clusters representing two ambient temperature ranges and three solar radiation ranges). The heuristic MPC strategy uses predefined optimal setpoint profiles for each cluster and weather prediction one day ahead to shift the building load from on-peak to off-peak hours. For each heuristic MPC scenario, the model runs a simulation using forecast weather data to quantify and activate energy flexibility in response to grid requirements. The developed MPC framework was implemented in the school used as the case study. Ten classrooms are investigated, with six using the MPC and four as a reference case with the reactive control system and default zone setpoint profiles. Results indicate that the school building can provide between 47% and 95% energy flexibility (load shifting relative to reference) during on-peak hours and up to 44% electricity cost reduction while satisfying acceptable temperature constraints. By implementing the proposed MPC, energy flexibility of 32 W/m2 of floor area for the zones with a convective heating system and 65 W/m2 of floor area for the zones with radiant heating can be achieved during a demand response event. Using location theory as a starting point, this paper aims to understand how coworking spaces (CSs) locate within the city and how they reacted to the stress of COVID-19. Through a case study of the city of Montreal (Canada), we show that most CSs locate in areas of high transit accessibility and in central districts, but there is a trend – possibly accelerated by COVID – towards more suburban locations. These location strategies follow logics similar to those of Knowledge intensive services (KIS), including the tendency of some to agglomerate and of others to disperse. For some CSs, there is also heightened sensitivity to interactions with, and contributions to, the local community. Hence, faced with COVID, CSs in transit-accessible places combine an inward strategy, centralizing their activities around members, with a networking strategy , pooling some services and developing partnerships with local or other nearby CSs. Furthermore, CSs in peri -central neighbourhoods are the most vulnerable and have adopted retraction strategies. In contrast, CSs located in low accessibility districts outside the agglomeration adopt an expansion strategy, opening new branches near suburban residential areas to attract nearby workers. As hybrid work evolves, these results can help urban planners better understand the location rationales of CSs, how they adapt, and to what extent they bring added value to local urban development. Objective: Evaluate the effects of five disinfection methods on bacterial concentrations in hospital sink drains, focusing on three opportunistic pathogens (OPs): Serratia marcescens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. Design: Over two years, three sampling campaigns were conducted in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Samples from 19 sink drains were taken at three time points: before, during, and after disinfection. Bacterial concentration was measured using culture-based and flow cytometry methods. High-throughput short sequence typing was performed to identify the three OPs and assess S. marcescens persistence after disinfection at the genotypic level. Setting: This study was conducted in a pediatric hospitals NICU in Montréal, Canada, which is divided in an intensive and intermediate care side, with individual rooms equipped with a sink. Interventions: Five treatments were compared: self-disinfecting drains, chlorine disinfection, boiling water disinfection, hot tap water flushing, and steam disinfection. Results: This study highlights significant differences in the effectiveness of disinfection methods. Chlorine treatment proved ineffective in reducing bacterial concentration, including the three OPs. In contrast, all other drain interventions resulted in an immediate reduction in culturable bacteria (4–8 log) and intact cells (2–3 log). Thermal methods, particularly boiling water and steam treatments, exhibited superior effectiveness in reducing bacterial loads, including OPs. However, in drains with well-established bacterial biofilms, clonal strains of S. marcescens recolonized the drains after heat treatments. Conclusions: Our study supports thermal disinfection (>80°C) for pathogen reduction in drains but highlights the need for additional trials and the implementation of specific measures to limit biofilm formation. Past major earthquakes have demonstrated that a significant proportion of existing residential buildings are vulnerable to seismic hazards, resulting in economic and social losses. The assessment of earthquake‐induced losses is crucial for devising strategies aimed at enhancing seismic resilience through mitigation plans and emergency response measures. This study intends to provide an analytical methodology for evaluating economic losses for existing residential concrete shear wall buildings in Eastern Canada seismic zones based on Canadian‐compatible seismic capacity parameters. A sampled data set related to residential buildings in Montreal was analyzed and statistical distributions were developed that represent the proportion of buildings in different seismic design code levels and number of stories. Vulnerability analyses were performed, which involved estimating buildings' response under seismic hazard inputs according to the 2020 National Building Code of Canada and conducting loss assessment for structural components, nonstructural displacement‐sensitive components, nonstructural acceleration‐sensitive components, and contents. The results of vulnerability analyses in terms of loss ratio curves showed that the seismic performance varies between mid‐rise and high‐rise concrete shear wall buildings with different seismic design code levels, and nonstructural displacement‐sensitive components exerted the most significant influence on overall economic losses among building components. In addition, a comparison was conducted between Canadian‐compatible economic loss ratio curves and those developed based on the standard seismic capacity parameters in the Hazus technical manual and differences in predicted loss ratios were discussed. The developed loss ratio curves can be integrated into regional scale loss assessment tools for rapid estimation of earthquake‐induced economic losses for concrete shear wall buildings as a function of seismic intensity. The COVID-19 pandemic led to a substantial increase in the number of people working from home (telecommuting), in turn leading to unprecedented changes in mobility patterns worldwide. Due to the changing context of the pandemic, there is still a significant gap in knowledge regarding the effects of working from home on workers' travel patterns. The main goal of this work is to unravel the interrelationship between telecommuting during the COVID-19 pandemic, the frequency of active travel for non-work utilitarian purposes, and local accessibility levels around workers' homes. This study uses a longitudinal approach by analyzing travel and telecommuting behavior data from a two-wave survey administered in Montreal in 2019, pre-pandemic, and 2021, during COVID-19 (n = 452). Through a set of weighted multi-level linear regressions, we study the effects of telecommuting on the frequency of active travel for non-work utilitarian purposes, mediated by local accessibility around the household. Results show that the effect of telecommuting on non-work active travel for utilitarian purposes is highly dependent on local accessibility levels around the person's household. For workers living in high local accessibility areas, an increase in telecommuting during the pandemic has induced an increase in active trips for non-work utilitarian purposes. On the other hand, for workers residing in low local accessibility neighborhoods, the effect is the opposite. This research provides insights into the effects of telecommuting on non-work active travel, an area that is currently of interest to policy-makers and practitioners working towards increasing the level of physical activity among individuals through travel. In medium- to high-rise buildings, single shear walls (SSWs) are often used to resist lateral force due to wind and earthquakes. They are designed to dissipate seismic energy mainly through plastic hinge zones at the base. However, they often display large post-earthquake deformations that can give rise to many economic and safety concerns within buildings. Hence, the primary objective of this research study is to minimize residual deformations in existing SSWs located in the Western and Eastern seismic zones of Canada, thereby enhancing their resilience and self-centering capacity. To that end, four SSWs of 20 and 15 stories, located in Vancouver and Montreal, were meticulously designed and detailed per the latest Canadian standards and codes. The study assessed the impact of three innovative strengthening schemes on the seismic response of these SSWs through 2D nonlinear time history (NLTH) analysis. All three strengthening schemes involved the application of Externally Bonded Fiber Reinforced Polymer (EB-FRP) to the shear walls. Accordingly, a total of 208 NLTH analyses were conducted to assess the effectiveness of all strengthening configurations. The findings unveiled that the most efficient technique for reducing residual drift in SSWs involved applying three layers of vertical FRP sheets to the extreme edges of the wall, full FRP wrapping the walls, and full FRP wrapping of the plastic hinge zone. Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that implementing these strengthening schemes may lead to an increase in bending moment and base shear force demands within the walls. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Montreal consensus recognizes chronic cough as an extra-esophageal manifestation of gastroesophageal reflux disease. We performed a meta-analysis to assess the effects of acid-suppressive medications in adults with non-specific chronic cough. The protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42022368769). Placebo-controlled randomized trials evaluating the impact of acid-suppressive medications on persistent cough were included. The systematic search was performed on the 1st of November 2022 in three databases. A random-effects model was used for the calculations. The effect size was the standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). A total number of 11 double-blinded placebo-controlled randomized trials were included in the meta-analysis. Data showed that compared to placebo, PPIs decreased the severity of cough (SMD 0.33; CI 0.05; 0.61). Therapeutic response was not different in patients with non-specific chronic cough only, compared to those with laryngopharyngeal reflux. Prolonged treatment durations did not result in greater symptomatic improvement, with SMD 0.33 (CI − 0.22; 0.88), 0.31 (CI − 1.74; 2.35), 0.32 (CI − 0.29; 0.93) and 0.34 (CI − 0.16; 0.85), following 4, 6, 8 and 12 weeks of treatment, respectively. The pooled analysis of the improvement in quality of life with PPIs found an SMD of 0.39 (CI − 0.51; 1.29). Introduction: Thrombotic events are more than twice as common in inflammatory bowel disease patients as in the general population. We report an interesting and rare case of portal vein thrombosis as a venous thromboembolic event in the context of extraintestinal manifestations of Crohn's disease. We also conducted a literature review on portal vein thrombosis associated with inflammatory bowel disease, with the following concepts: inflammatory bowel diseases, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, portal vein, and thrombosis. Case presentation: A 24-year-old Syrian female with active chronic Crohn's disease was diagnosed 11 years ago and classified as A1L3B1P according to the Montreal classification. She had no prior surgical history. Her previous medications included azathioprine and prednisolone. Her Crohn's disease activity index was 390 points. Gastroduodenoscopy revealed grade I esophageal varices, a complication of portal hypertension. Meanwhile, a colonoscopy revealed several deep ulcers in the sigmoid, rectum, and descending colon. An investigation of portal vein hypertension revealed portal vein thrombosis. We used corticosteroids to induce remission, followed by tapering; additionally she received ustekinumab to induce and maintain remission. She began on low-molecular-weight heparin for 1 week, warfarin for 3 months, and then apixaban, a novel oral anticoagulant, after excluding antiphospholipid syndrome. Primary prophylaxis for esophageal varices was not required. After 1 year, she achieved clinical, biochemical, and endoscopic remission. Despite 1 year of treatment, a computed tomography scan revealed no improvement in portal vein recanalization. Conclusion: Portal vein thrombosis is a rare and poorly defined complication of inflammatory bowel disease. It is usually exacerbated by inflammatory bowel disease. The symptoms are nonspecific and may mimic a flare-up of inflammatory bowel disease, making the diagnosis difficult. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic had a disproportionate impact on the health and wellbeing of people who use drugs (PWUD) in Canada. However less is known about jurisdictional commonalities and differences in COVID-19 exposure and impacts of pandemic-related restrictions on competing health and social risks among PWUD living in large urban centres. Methods: Between May 2020 and March 2021, leveraging infrastructure from ongoing cohorts of PWUD, we surveyed 1,025 participants from Vancouver (n = 640), Toronto (n = 158), and Montreal (n = 227), Canada to describe the impacts of pandemic-related restrictions on basic, health, and harm reduction needs. Results: Among participants, awareness of COVID-19 protective measures was high; however, between 10 and 24% of participants in each city-specific sample reported being unable to self-isolate. Overall, 3–19% of participants reported experiencing homelessness after the onset of the pandemic, while 20–41% reported that they went hungry more often than usual. Furthermore, 8–33% of participants reported experiencing an overdose during the pandemic, though most indicated no change in overdose frequency compared the pre-pandemic period. Most participants receiving opioid agonist therapy in the past six months reported treatment continuity during the pandemic (87–93%), however, 32% and 22% of participants in Toronto and Montreal reported missing doses due to service disruptions. There were some reports of difficulty accessing supervised consumption sites in all three sites, and drug checking services in Vancouver. Conclusion: Findings suggest PWUD in Canada experienced difficulties meeting essential needs and accessing some harm reduction services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Air pollution is a major health hazard, and while air quality overall has been improving in industrialized nations, pollution is still a major economic and public health issue, with some species, such as ozone (O 3), still exceeding the standards set by governing agencies. Chemical transport models (CTMs) are valuable tools that aid in our understanding of the risks of air pollution both at local and regional scales. In this study, the Polair3D v1.11 CTM of the Polyphemus air quality modeling platform was set up over Quebec, Canada, to assess the model's capability in predicting key air pollutant species over the region, at seasonal temporal scales and at regional spatial scales. The simulation by the model included three nested domains, at horizontal resolutions of 9 km by 9 km and 3 km by 3 km, as well as two 1 km by 1 km domains covering the cities of Montréal and Québec. We find that the model captures the spatial variability and seasonal effects and, to a lesser extent, the hour-by-hour or day-to-day temporal variability for a fixed location. The model at both the 3 km and the 1 km resolution struggled to capture high-frequency temporal variability and showed large variabilities in correlation and bias from site to site. When comparing the biases and correlation at a site-wide scale, the 3 km domain showed slightly higher correlation for carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2), and nitric oxide (NO), while ozone (O 3), sulfur dioxide (SO 2), and PM 2.5 showed slight increases in correlation at the 1 km domain. Moult and migration are energetically demanding and require adequate nutrition. In some species, individuals may interrupt their fall migration to moult at discrete stopover locations outside of their breeding grounds (i.e., moult-migration) leading to competing nutritional demands for moult and migration. Here, we use DNA barcoding of fecal samples to compare the diet of moulting and actively migrating (post-moult) Swainson's Thrushes (Catharus ustulatus) and Tennessee Warblers (Leiothlypis peregrina) during their fall migration stopover at a large urban greenspace in Montreal, Canada. Diet differed according to moult status, species, and seasonality. Swainson's Thrushes had a broad diet with frequent detections of both insects and berry-producing shrubs; while detections in Tennessee Warblers' diets were mainly arthropods. For both species, more actively migrating individuals consumed fleshy-fruiting plants than moulting individuals. A higher proportion of moulting birds consumed arthropods compared to active migrants, due to either arthropod availability or a dietary preference for proteinaceous foods to grow feathers. Both species and moult classes consumed more native plants than non-native plants later in the season. We show the importance of managing urban greenspaces with native plants and diverse food sources that can provide for the different dietary needs of migratory birds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sarcopenia and anemia are common complications in patients with Crohn's Disease (CD). However, few studies have shown the association between sarcopenia and hemoglobin levels in CD patients. This retrospective study aimed to explore such association in Chinese patients with CD. Two hundred and twelve adult CD inpatients who underwent computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations from July 2019 to December 2021 were included in the study. Sarcopenia was defined according to the cutoff value of skeletal muscle index of lumbar spine 3 (SMI-L3) (< 44.77cm2/m2 for males and < 32.5cm2/m2 for females). The CD patients were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of sarcopenia. Clinical data, hemoglobin levels, and other laboratory data were retrospectively collected. The association between hemoglobin levels and sarcopenia was analyzed by univariable and multivariable logistic regression analysis. Sarcopenia occurred in 114 CD patients (53.8%). Compared to patients without sarcopenia, patients with sarcopenia had a lower proportion of L1 (30.7% vs. 45.8%, p = 0.032) and B1 classification (58.8% vs. 72.4%, p = 0.037). Patients with sarcopenia had significantly lower levels of hemoglobin (Hb) (116.5 ± 22.8 vs. 128.1 ± 21.0, p < 0.001). The prevalence of sarcopenia increased with the decrease in hemoglobin level (p for trend < 0.05). Linear regression analysis showed that hemoglobin levels were associated with SMI-L3 (β = 0.091, p = 0.001). Multivariable logistic regression analysis found that higher hemoglobin levels (OR:0.944; 95% CI: 0.947,0.998; p = 0.036) were independent protective factors for sarcopenia. Groupe Intervention Vidéo (GIV) is an independent artist run center in Montreal "dedicated to the promotion of videos created by women (in its most inclusive definition) by distributing and presenting them" (GIV website) At the crossroads of longevity, consistency, commitment, and the precarity that accompanies most forms of feminist labor, GIV is one of the most important "accidental" archives of feminist organizing and expression in Quebec. Their curatorial practices resist any archiving separated from the practice of everyday life. This article focuses on the thirty-year history of Vidéo des Femmes dans le Parc (VFP), GIV's annual public and outdoor screening of new works from an open call. The concept of walkability encompasses a multitude of features of the built and social environments that impact walking behavior, leading to the creation of a wide range of walkability indices. While past studies have compared the research outputs from multiple walkability indices, little research has looked at how relevant each index is across sociodemographic groups and how the relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and behavior vary from one index to another. Using trip data from Montréal, Canada, this paper evaluates two commonly used walkability indices at different scales – Walk Score© (meso-scale) and the MAPS-Mini audit tool (micro-scale) – and their interactions with sociodemographic characteristics. Weighted binary logistic regressions are used to model the probability of adults taking a homebased utilitarian walking trip. A total of ten models are generated, including eight models in which one of four socio-demographic variables – gender, age, household income, and presence of children below 13 years old in the household – is interacted with one of the two walkability indices. Sensitivity analyses are then conducted using the interaction variables' outputs by varying the values of the interacted sociodemographic variable. Results show significant interactions for all variables for both indices except from Walk Score©'s interaction with gender. Opposite effects are observed between the two indices in the sensitivity analysis for household income. The differential results observed between the indices and between sociodemographic groups underscore the need to properly test the equity implication of using certain walkability measures in research. • Interactions between sociodemographic characteristics and walkability are tested. • Walkability impacts individuals differently based on their sociodemographics. • Different walkability indices do not interact similarly with all sociodemographics. Ransomware presents a significant threat to the security and integrity of cryptocurrency transactions. This research paper explores the intricacies of ransomware detection in cryptocurrency transactions using the Bitcoinheist dataset. The dataset encompasses 28 distinct families classified into three ransomware categories: Princeton, Montreal, and Padua, along with a white category representing legitimate transactions. We propose a novel hybrid supervised and semi-supervised multistage machine learning framework to tackle this challenge. Our framework effectively classifies known ransomware families by leveraging ensemble learning techniques such as Decision Tree, Random Forest, XGBoost, and Stacking. Additionally, we introduce a novel semi-supervised approach to accurately identify previously unseen ransomware instances within the dataset. Through rigorous evaluation employing comprehensive classification metrics, including accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score, RoC score, and prediction time, our proposed approach demonstrates promising results in ransomware detection within cryptocurrency transactions. We address the crustal properties of neutron stars, such as crustal mass, crustal radius, crustal fraction of the moment of inertia and investigate the crustal and structural properties related to the glitching mechanism observed in pulsars. The mass, radius and crustal fraction of the moment of inertia in neutron stars have been determined using β -equilibrated neutron–proton–electron–muon (npe μ ) dense neutron star matter obtained using the extended Skyrme effective interactions with NRAPR and Brussels–Montreal parameter sets. The maximum mass of the neutron star calculated from these sets is able to reach ∼ 2 M ⊙ and higher, corroborating the recently observed masses of compact stars. The crustal fraction of the moment of inertia depends sensitively on the pressure and the corresponding density at the core–crust transition. The core–crust transition density and pressure together with the extracted minimum crustal fraction of the total moment of inertia provide a limit for the radii of pulsars. Present calculations imply that due to the crustal entrainment, the crustal fraction of the total moment of inertia is about 5.5 % . [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent sound installations at major international museums and public venues simulate the sounds of the European honeybee. In this article, I discuss how and to what effect "buzz" is used in selected installations in London, New York, and Montréal. In these immersive works, listeners are invited to "be a bee" and mimic behaviours such as flight, pollination, and hive activity. The works suggest that to behave like a bee is to empathise with a bee's experience – an exercise that cultivates compassion and, possibly, activism. Reflecting on these installations and my experiences thereof, I consider the possibility of cross-species empathy through methods of simulation, immersion, and witnessing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Whether Inuit in Canada experience disparities in lung cancer survival remains unknown. When requiring investigation and treatment for lung cancer, all residents of Nunavik, the Inuit homeland in Quebec, are sent to the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), in Montréal. We sought to compare survival among patients with lung cancer at the MUHC, who were residents of Nunavik and Montréal, Quebec, respectively. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study. Using lung cancer registry data, we identified Nunavik residents with histologically confirmed lung cancer diagnosed between 2005 and 2017. We aimed to match 2 Montréal residents to each Nunavik resident on sex, age, calendar year of diagnosis, and histology (non–small cell lung cancer v. small cell lung cancer). We reviewed medical records for data on additional patient characteristics and treatment, and obtained vital status from a provincial registry. We compared survival using Kaplan–Meier analysis and Cox proportional hazards regression. Results: We included 95 residents of Nunavik and 185 residents of Montréal. For non–small cell lung cancer, median survival times were 321 (95% confidence interval [CI] 184–626) days for Nunavik (n = 71) and 720 (95% CI 536–1208) days for Montréal residents (n = 141). For small cell lung cancer, median survival times were 190 (95% CI 159–308) days for Nunavik (n = 24) and 270 (95% CI 194–766) days for Montréal residents (n = 44). Adjusting for matching variables, stage, performance status, and comorbidity, Nunavik residents had a higher hazard of death (hazard ratio 1.68, 95% CI 1.17–2.41). Interpretation: Nunavik residents experience disparities in survival after lung cancer diagnosis. Although studies in other Inuit Nunangat regions are needed, our findings point to an urgent need to ensure that interventions aimed at improving lung cancer survival, including lung cancer screening, are accessible to Inuit Nunangat residents. A space-borne remote sensing method was applied, validated, and demonstrated in a case study on the Samuel de Champlain Bridge in Montreal, Canada. High-resolution C-band radar satellite imagery was analyzed using the Persistent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar technique to derive bridge displacements and compare them against theoretical estimates. Multispectral and long-wave thermal infrared satellite imagery acquired during the InSAR observation period and historical environmental data were analyzed to provide context for the interpretation and understanding of InSAR results. Thermal deformation measurements compared well with their theoretical estimates based on known bridge geometry and ambient temperature data. Non-thermal deformation measurements gave no evidence of settlement during the 2-year monitoring period, as would normally be expected for a newly constructed bridge with its foundation on bedrock. The availability of environmental data obtained from multispectral and thermal infrared satellite imagery was found to be useful in providing context for the bridge stability assessment. Ambient temperature measurements from thermal infrared satellite imagery were found to be a suitable alternative in cases where data from in situ temperature sensors or nearby weather stations are not available or not fit for purpose. No strong correlation was found between the river conditions and bridge deformation results from the InSAR analysis; this is partly due to the fact that most of these effects act along the river flow in the north–south direction, to which the satellite sensor is not sensitive. Background and aims: Risks of peri- and postoperative complications after bowel surgery in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) receiving biologics are still discussed controversially. We therefore addressed the safety of different biologics that were applied in our IBD center before surgery. Methods: Data of IBD patients who underwent bowel resections between 2012 and 2022 at our hospital were analyzed retrospectively. Exposure to biologics was defined by receiving biologics within 12 weeks before resective abdominal surgery. Safety considerations included minor complications, such as infections and wound healing disorders and major complications, e.g., anastomotic insufficiency or abscess formation. Results: A total of 447 IBD patients (334 with Crohn's disease, 113 with ulcerative colitis), 51.9% female, were included and followed for a median follow-up of 45 months [range 0–113]. A total of 73.9% (326/447) were undergoing medical treatment at date of surgery, 61.5% (275/447) were treated with biologics within 3 months and 42.3% (189/447) within 4 weeks before surgery. Most surgeries (97.1%) were planned electively and 67.8% were performed laparoscopically. Major and minor complications occurred in 20.8% (93/447) of patients. Serious complications were rare: Six patients had acute postoperative bleeding, one CD patient developed peritonitis and two CD patients died postoperatively. After adjusting for age, disease duration, disease activity, Montreal classification, and medical treatment at date of surgery, no significant differences were observed regarding complications and exposure to biologics. Conclusions: This retrospective single center study of 447 IBD patients goes to demonstrate that perioperative use of biologics is not associated with a higher risk of complications. Source apportionment of PM 2.5 was performed using positive matrix factorization (PMF) based on detailed chemical composition data from 24 h filter samples collected over a 3-month period (August–November 2020) at an urban site in Montréal, a Canadian city with a population of approximately 4×106 people. This source apportionment study, which examined the main contributing sources to PM 2.5 using a larger suite of organic molecular markers than other Canadian studies, is the first of its sort in Canada. A focus of this study was on quantifying previously unresolved sources of PM 2.5 through the inclusion in the PMF analysis of additional organic molecular markers beyond those measured typically by the Canadian government's National Air Pollution Surveillance Program (NAPS). The organic species included in the PMF model were comprised of six n -alkanes, two fatty acids, one dicarboxylic acid, two biogenic secondary organic aerosol (SOA) tracers, and hopane. Secondary inorganic aerosols (SIAs) and SOAs were the dominant components and constituted 39 % of the measured PM 2.5 mass, while the local primary anthropogenic sources, namely traffic exhaust, road dust, industrial, and cooking emissions, contributed 23 %. The chemical transport model GEOS-Chem revealed that ammonium sulfate concentrations in Montréal are strongly influenced by both local sources in Quebec and transboundary input from the United States, with the transboundary input exceeding the local emissions for SOA. Co and Cr(VI) presented an elevated cancer risk, highlighting that more attention should be given to these trace metals, which were associated with industrial emissions by the PMF analysis. Furthermore, the results showed that industrial emissions were minor contributors to the total PM 2.5 mass concentration but were the largest contributors to Co and Cr(VI) concentrations. Thus, the health hazards associated with this source cannot be entirely established by the PM 2.5 mass concentration alone. This study highlights that, when evaluating air quality in Montréal and other urban regions, the prioritization of sources for mitigation strategies will diverge if one considers total PM 2.5 mass concentration or the concentration of individual particulate-bound contaminants. Furthermore, the large transboundary contribution from the United States to total PM 2.5 levels suggests that future municipal, provincial, and federal monitoring and regulations would be more effective if they focus on specific high-risk contaminants (e.g., Co and Cr(VI) rather than total PM 2.5). During the COVID-19 pandemic, many crucial services for youth shifted to online delivery. Yet, little is known about the processes of providing online support to newcomer youth from the perspective of the service users. Say Ça! is a community-based organization in Montreal that supports newcomer youth through language tutoring and cultural activities. Photo journals by six newcomer 12–17-year-olds and group interviews with 11 program facilitators explored how the pandemic affected the youth's experiences participating in Say Ça!. Findings highlight key elements of online learning program delivery essential to the youth's engagement during the pandemic. Notably, adopting a relationship-centered approach that strengthened one-on-one tutor-youth relationships and a youth-centered approach that offered a space of self-expression, academic support, and leisure parting from the youth's interests. Strategies developed by community-engaged organizations are essential to develop adequate services that respond to the changing needs of their populations in the context of a crisis. Implementation and funding mechanisms to reverse biodiversity loss formed the core of the discussion focusing on the Post‐2020 Global Biodiversity Framework ("the Framework"), at the 15th Conference of Parties at the Convention on Biological Diversity hosted by China. Before financial support emerged from the private sector in China, biodiversity conservation had primarily been financed by the government. By the end of the 20th‐century international nongovernmental organizations and China's local philanthropists began to launch pilot programs in the country. In the past 5 years, biodiversity conservation across China has received CNY 1.757 billion (approximately $279 million) from the philanthropy sector. It represents the largest‐ and fastest‐growing share (69%) of environmental philanthropic funding; however, it accounted for <1% of all the philanthropic in all sectors nationwide. We suggested Foundations and NGOs review and adjust their strategies to align with the Kunming‐Montreal global biodiversity framework. Proactive connection and engagement with the philanthropies is required to expand its contributions while providing better pathways and support mechanisms for philanthropic funding for biodiversity conservation. Despite the philanthropic funding provided has been relatively modest over the past few decades, the philanthropic organizations have achieved significant positive results for biodiversity conservation in China. However, the funding for biodiversity conservation falls far short of what is needed to achieve the goals under the Kunming‐Montreal global biodiversity framework. This study provides a comprehensive overview of biodiversity philanthropic funding in China. Based on the collection of data related to environmentally relevant grants provided by companies, foundations, and individuals, we conducted a visualization analysis to reveal China's philanthropic funding flows between 2016 and 2020 in China.
