Age gap between spouses has important implications for a range of outcomes—from fertility and longevity, to gender relationships, marital quality, and stability. This paper examines the age gap between spouses in 12 countries in South and Southeast Asia. The average age difference (husband's minus wife's age) is positive in all countries and ranges from 2.7 in Myanmar to 8.4 in Bangladesh. Age homogamous marriages accounted for 5% of all marriages in Bangladesh to close to half of all marriages in Thailand. The proportion of age hypogamous marriages was uniformly low in all the countries except for Myanmar where it reaches close to 10%. Men's marriage age has a stronger effect in determining the age gap. In general, the age gap for women with lower education was larger than for those with higher education. (1) Background: The maltreatment of child labourers is a major public health concern. There is a dearth of research in Bangladesh on the intentional maltreatment of child labourers. This study explored the risk factors for the maltreatment of child labourers in rural Bangladesh based on the knowledge and understanding of experts; (2) Methods: Seventeen interviews were conducted with experts who were sampled using a purposeful approach. A thematic analysis was performed to analyse data using NVivo; (3) Results: Child labourers were exposed to maltreatment due to their demographic, their young age, dropping out of school, health complications, and excessive dependency on employers. Socio-cultural adversities such as corporal punishment practices, social stratification, and family disorganization pose risks of experiencing maltreatment. Economic poverty is also a factor. Child labourers were found to be victimized if they worked in violence prone sectors. Significantly, the unregulated market structure and the lack of monitoring has also led to the exploitation of children in the workplace. Gaps in public policies were also identified as risk factor for the maltreatment of child labourers; (4) Conclusion: There is a need for adequate evidence-based research on the determinants of the maltreatment of child labourers to formulate adequate policy. Background: Disability-free life expectancy (DFLE) has been used to gain a better understanding of the population's quality of life. Objectives: The authors aimed to estimate age and sex-specific disability-free life expectancy (DFLE) for urban and rural areas of Bangladesh, as well as to investigate the differences in DFLE between males and females of urban and rural areas. Methods: Data from the Bangladesh Sample Vital Statistics-2016 and the Bangladesh Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES)-2016 were used to calculate the disability-free life expectancy (DFLE) of urban and rural males and females in Bangladesh in 2016. The DFLE was calculated using the Sullivan method. Results: With only a few exceptions, rural areas have higher mortality and disability rates than urban areas. For both males and females, statistically significant differences in DFLE were reported between urban and rural areas between the ages of birth and 39 years. In comparison to rural males and females, urban males and females had a longer life expectancy (LE), a longer disability-free life expectancy, and a higher share of life without disability. Conclusion: This study illuminates stark urban–rural disparities in LE and DFLE, especially among individuals aged < 1–39 years. Gender dynamics reveal longer life expectancy but shorter disability-free life expectancy for Bangladeshi women compared to men, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to address these pronounced health inequalities. Background: This study aimed to assess the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) (physical, functional, emotional, social, spiritual) and psychological (anxiety and depression) well-being and their associations with patient characteristics among patients with metastatic cancer in Bangladesh. Methods: A convenience sample of 386 Bangladeshi patients with stage IV solid cancers was recruited from a palliative care outpatient department and an inpatient palliative center. Dependent variables included the physical, functional, emotional, social, and overall scores of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G) scale, the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-being (FACIT-SP) scale, the anxiety, depression, and overall scores of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HADS) scale. Linear regressions examined the association between dependent variables and patient characteristics. Results: A substantial proportion of Bangladeshi patients reported anxiety (59% of outpatients and 55% of inpatients) and depression (60% of outpatients and 73% of inpatients) symptoms. Generally, greater financial difficulty and symptom burden scores were associated with worse health outcomes. Older patients reported poorer functional and spiritual well-being but better anxiety scores. Females reported worse anxiety and depressive symptoms and physical well-being but better spiritual outcomes. Conclusions: Additional efforts must be directed at improving the HRQOL of patients with metastatic cancer in Bangladesh.
