Jayanta Mahapatra's literary corpus is versatile and reflective to the windows of the world. His Door of Paper: Essays and Memoirs (2007) is the finest flowering ever written by an Indian English poet compared to the theory of poetry of Wordsworth, Shelley and T. S. Eliot. He is the only Indian English poet who wrote the issues related to poetry about how to write poetry, the freedom of poetry, the silence of poetry and the timeframe of poetry and the significance of poetry. His pioneering book Door of Paper: Essays and Memoirs (2007) encompasses his autobiographical strain as well his ideas of poetry as felt during his composition of poetry. What Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Arnold and T. S. Eliot highlighted in their theory of poetry is also reflected in his ideas of poetry. So, this article attempts to highlight how Mahapatra's book Door Of Paper signifies his ideas about the freedom of poetry, process of poetic composition, the silence of poetry, the timeframe of poetry and the significance of poetry as compared to Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Arnold and T. This paper focuses on Vandana Mishra's autobiography I, the Salt Doll which was originally published as Mee Mithaachi Baahuli in Marathi in 2014 and translated by Jerry Pinto in 2016. It attempts to analyze the concept of protofeminism by unfolding some significant sociocultural reformations in women's lives in the colonial metropolis of Mumbai. The study explores how a section of women revolted against the rigid gender norms to assert themselves in the public realm. It also concentrates on the miserable plight of widows who adopted the nursing profession. This paper features how male stalwarts, in those days, advocated not only for the upliftment of women through education, but also championed women's involvement in theatres. The study employs narrative analysis and highlights how protofeminism can be useful to unearth Vandana Mishra's mother's strenuous challenge against regressive gender stereotypes surrounding female education and nursing profession while setting an example for women of the next generation to follow. The Yiddish-language memoirs of the journalist Getzel Zelikovits (1855-1926), published in New York in 1919-1920, present a version of his life that deviates considerably from the version one might glean from other contemporary testimony, such as newspaper articles and institutional records. This paper examines how Zelikovits constructed a counterfactual narrative in which he seeks to present his readership with his life as it should have been. As well as Zelikovits's sense of injustice at how he had been treated by European and American academia, and by the British and French establishments, another reason for his deviation from the truth is that he was guilty of a number of serious offences: academic fraud, false accusation of murder, and likely sexual assault. I conclude by exploring what is at stake for a biographer, from an ethical and scholarly standpoint, in exposing Zelikovits's misdeeds and untruths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper brings to light the autobiographical elements of Henrik Ibsen’s life (the limitations faced by him in real life) as dramatized in his plays. This study explores that Ibsen’s plays become an exercise in delving deep into the limitations faced by his near and dear ones as well as by himself. The characters in his plays often mirror his parents, and his own social and psychological sufferings and conflicts. Most of the autobiographical findings in this paper about Ibsen’s life, the limitations he faced in life, and the characters created by him which personify his own self, are based on the comments of different critics, and his biography written by his foremost biographer Michael Meyer. The limitations Ibsen faced, suffered, and portrayed in his plays are his poverty and financial problems, the scar of illegitimacy, his father’s bankruptcy, his cowardliness, his isolation in society, his loveless marriage, his fear of heights, his fears of youth in old age, his attraction to young women, and finally his emotional bankruptcy. This study brings to light all the mentioned autobiographical elements in Ibsen’s plays, how he climbed to the heights of arts and achieved materialistic success, fame, and popularity, yet at the cost of his emotional and spiritual sacrifices. AbstractThe auto/biographical genre offers theoretical and methodological starting points that are key to a just and ecological mobilities transformation. Just as the COVID-19 pandemic response and its impacts made diverse lifecourse visible, climate change and its contingencies will have similar effects. Simultaneously, digital cultures provide new scope for practising auto/biography and telling about diverse life stories. Through a critical review of the literature and drawing on the new insights of this Special Issue, the paper argues that a research agenda grounded in the auto/biographical is a priority. In contrast to some of the anti-biographical positions that have been influential in mobilities scholarship, the paper argues that: i) the feminist auto/biographical genre accommodates a human subject that is social and historical before being individual, with its performativity being a crucial form for unheard voices to be heard; 2) that it plays a significant role in contesting the frameworks of lifecourse that inform institutional and policy contexts; and, 3) that there is scope for a re-engagement of the non-human and the more-than-human within auto/biographical studies, which though contentious, provides a way to radically re-think how diverse life stories are (im)mobile, and the ways that human and non-human lives are valued. This paper examines Richard Jefferies' contribution to the study of nature mysticism. I argue that the study of nature mysticism can be utilized as a valuable source of insight to cultivate a more ecocentric response to the ecological crisis. Historically, the study of mysticism in the West has been shaped by a monotheistic bias that tends to marginalize the teachings of nature mystics. I seek to redress this lacuna in the field by calling attention to the understudied teachings of the English mystic and author, Richard Jefferies. I claim that Jefferies' spiritual autobiography, The Story of My Heart ([1883] 2014) presents a compelling vision of nature mysticism that challenges the reader to reflect critically on conventional understandings of God, body, and time/being. Most significantly, I argue that Jefferies' concept of "soul-life" can be interpreted as an ontological category characterized by an intellectual and moral sensitivity towards the wonders of nature. This paper encompasses an analysis of the novels written by two Romanian badanti who emigrated from Eastern Europe to Italy at the beginning of the 21st century, namely Liliana Nechita (Romania) and Lilia-Bicec Zanardelli (the Republic of Moldova). The reading grid of these narratives is a Marxist feminist one, as it continues the analytical framework of Lise Vogel and links it to the last decades' "new gender arrangement" (Lutz) that emphasises the outsourcing of reproductive labour towards migrant and gendered labour-power. The work of these badanti partakes in the global care chain of our world-system, which privileges families in the West and affects poor households in the East. The novels written by the two workers show how agents directly involved in this global division of labour explain their own history, as it is shaped by their new working experience. However, their literary inquiry will circumscribe a contradictory rhetoric, also called "soft backsliding", that combines emancipatory insights with reactionary ideologies related to the nationstate, family and Christianity. AbstractThis paper explores reproductive justice themes in different works of Black literature and juxtaposes that literature with modern scholarship to consider a reproductive justice agenda for public health researchers. Incorporating multiple disciplines including public health, critical geography, and anthropology, this paper goes on to suggest that public health researchers would benefit from engagement with works from beyond academia. AbstractThe paper contributes to the theme of the special issue by making auto/biography the focal point of analysis and theorising its potential to be mobile or immobile. The theoretical developments of the paper are grounded in a mobilisation of life-without-children auto/biographical non-fiction across the last 10–15 years, in which those who do not have children, whatever the reason, have opened-up about their stories and found ways to share them with one another. The paper explicates an original concept immobile autobiography defined as: ‘life narratives that are invisible and side-lined, essentialized or not told in first person, and whose circulation both within (intra) and between (inter) generations is structurally limited’; and its converse mobile autobiography. (Im)mobile auto/biographies include, but cannot be reduced to, digital and physical mobilities. The potential of the concept lies in its ability to consider how lives, and the stories told about them, evolve, circulate and perform transformation, as they intersect with, transgress and re-shape changing cultural climates of a mobile world. Previous scholarship has interrogated how transsexual autobiographies recursively construct a gender-coherent subject through travel analogies. Orientalism has been one of the predominant frames through which these trans travel narratives have been interpreted. Through a close reading of Jan Morris's autobiography, Conundrum, this paper attends to the overwhelming anti-Blackness that scaffolds these voyages to and through the Orient. Exploring how "Black Africa" has been occluded from Orientalist analyses of trans travel narratives, the author asks what might be found by attending specifically to the role of Africa (as a metaphor for Blackened rather than Orientalized geographies) in these autobiographies. Through Black studies, trans studies, affect theory, and Kleinian object relations theory, the essay demonstrates how Blackness grounds both trans travel narratives and the scholarship about them. This paper explores the intricate relationship between our personal experiences of space and the autobiographical nature of our geography. Our geographical awareness is profoundly shaped by the places we have been, encompassing a rich tapestry of places such as childhood homes, educational institutions, vacation spots, and bustling city streets. These spaces become imbued with personal memories and significance, forming the backdrop of our individual narratives. While these experiences are inherently personal and unique, they are also shared in a broader sense. Language ideologies are a powerful way of perpetuating inequalities, as peripheralized speakers who have internalized the lack of legitimacy attributed to them often end up reproducing censure rather than resisting it. Foregrounding the affective dimension, this paper explores the role of shame as a fulcrum articulating the individual with the collective in the perpetuation of linguistic stigma. To do so, it presents excerpts of autobiographies written by university students that reveal the impact of language idealization on the subjectivities of those who, by deviating from the norm, forge subaltern identities. As victims of language shaming are often unaware that their suffering is due to ideologies, but instead blame it on personal failings, rather than challenge the linguistic vigilantes who harass them, they silence themselves. The paper discusses how the inherently social nature of the construction of otherness and stigma is obscured by the individuality of shame and presents an educational intervention with which to scaffold students to overcome language shame. The study aims to explore the specific features of the modern reception of J.-J. Rousseau’s “Confessions”. The theoretical framework of the research is grounded on the ideas advanced by T. Avtuxovych, M.Czermińska, M.Głowiński, W.Iser, R. Jakobson, H.R.Jauss, P.Lejeune, Yu. Lotman, V.Tjupa, Zh. Starobinskiy and other scholars. The researchers describe the semiotic model of literary communication and the theory of the text by Yuri Lotman. The research was conducted using historic-functional, hermeneutic, receptive, and theoretical analysis methods. An attempt is made in this paper to show how the process of “decoding” the meanings intended by the author in the text takes place. In particular, the authors study how Rousseau’s “Confessions” functions in the structure of modern literary communication. The specific objectives of the present study are the meanings of “Confessions” are read by the contemporary recipient and which ones are relegated to the background compared to the literary communication of the eighteenth century. The common discourse code of the author and the reader is the key to successful communication and understanding of the specifics of the project of Rousseau’s life writing. At the same time, the success and specificity of artistic communication are influenced by the difference in discourse code meanings related to the time distance between the author and the recipient and the layering of new historical and cultural patterns in the reader’s consciousness. At the thematic level, three main themes are considered, including: a) the social origin of the autobiographical subject, b) his conflict with society, and c) the protagonist’s intimate self-disclosure. Thus, the article provides a detailed examination of the motif of the social origin of the autobiographical character. On the topic of the social origin of the character, instead of the plebeian’s right to public attention for the contemporary reader, the value of education and knowledge, freedom of speech and individual liberty are being actualised. Of particular note is the theme of the conflict between a character and society, the idea of the human right to otherness, the right to personal liberty and the right to choose the concept of one’s own life comes to the forefront. Thus, a literary text realises the social function of literature. The reading of the character’s self-disclosure by an attentive reader (from Rousseau’s contemporary to modern readers) has a twofold purpose: first, to encourage everyone to live the experience of the character and thus to think about themselves, and second, to reflect on society as a whole. It testifies to the fact that in the aspect of self-disclosure of the meaning of “Confessions”, the transformation of confession as an external form of a religious rite of repentance addressed to God into the narrative genre of confessional autobiography addressed to a human reader of the story is actualized. The study demonstrated a need for continuation of the study in the aspect of reader reception to contribute to the perception of its place in the contemporary literary and cultural space. In recent decades, phenomenology and hermeneutical phenomenology have taken the lead in addressing the question of personal identity through the inquiry of "who are you?". However, this lead has questionable aspects in capturing the relationality between self, others, and the surrounding world, characterized by its ever-changing state. To understand personal identity in its ever-changing state of becoming, the primary focus of this paper is twofold: firstly, exploring how to reconcile these complex relations into a unified conception of personal identity by following Husserl's notion of "indeterminate determinacy" and his theory of variation, and secondly, considering the limitations of defining this unity as an "autobiography or biography" in accordance with Arendt's notion of a "life-story". In the final analyses the notion of life-story will be revised together with Waldenfels's analyses on "radical alien" and Sözer's "in-between". This will prompt a reconsideration of personal identity as a process, leading to a genetic phenomenological perspective that recognizes the "indeterminacy of the self". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Blending literary and cultural studies, the essay discusses the manners in which Jhumpa Lahiri's literary universe constructs a gradual unfolding of a layered transcultural vision. The paper argues that in the shift from fictions of migration to autobiographical narratives of self-redefinition, the Bengali-American author advances cultural scenarios of transformation that enable the reshaping of cultural identities through the transcendence of fixed cultural loyalties. Invoking perceived lacks in their native cultural traditions and intuiting the incompleteness of cultures, her characters are haunted by the urge to cross cultural boundaries in order to gain a sense of personal fulfilment. Ultimately, Lahiri herself replicates this pattern as she relocates to Italy and writes in a new language (Italian). The last stage in Lahiri's transcultural scenario is represented by an attempt to dissociate cultural specificity from the notion of identity, as she takes refuge in the realm of abstraction through minimalist aesthetics. Relying on a close reading of her texts, the essay will scrutinise the author's peculiar outlook on transculturality, which appears to embrace various cultural spaces while seemingly avoiding specific attachments. In this paper, my aim is to provide a brief characterisation of selected features of the Cavellian understanding of philosophy, especially in view of the role played by autobiographical aspects in Cavell's philosophical and literary reflections. Autobiography would appear to be one of Cavell's favourite sources of cognition, at the same time serving as an important medium for his self-promotion. The self-reflection which may be achieved thanks to autobiography is never purely passive; on the contrary, it entails an inherent element of introspection of one's subjectivity. This creative dimension offers Cavell the opportunity to embark on his reading of Emersonian perfectionism, which he understood as a never-ending upward movement, an unstoppable advance towards self-perfection. At the same time, it reveals the irreducible complexity and pervasiveness of the autobiographical aspects in Cavell's thought in their interconnections with other aspects of his thought, such as, for example, his unique approach to psychoanalysis (especially in therapeutic contexts), or to aesthetic experience. The Cormarë Series is a collection of articles and papers that explore various aspects of J.R.R. Tolkien's life and work. The series editors express their hope that the research on Edith Bratt will inspire further investigation into the biographies of other overlooked women, such as Mabel Tolkien and Jane Suffield. The articles in this volume, written by Nancy Bunting and sometimes co-written with Seamus Hamill-Keays, have been revised and expanded for re-publication. The editors also acknowledge the contributions of peer reviewers, layout designers, proofreaders, and the authors themselves. In the 1960s, conservationist Aldo Leopold noted: "One of the penalties of an ecological education is that one lives alone in a world of wounds." Decades later, activist Greta Thunberg interpellated world leaders: "I want you to act as if our house were on fire. Because it is." Together, these quotes capture two central features of environmental activism. First, despite growing public concern, environmental loss—including more-than-human deaths, species extinctions, devastated ecosystems—is grieved only by environmental scientists, activists, and witnesses. Second, they highlight the temporal gulf separating those who despair at mounting environmental degradation, and those who, trapped in a "business-as-usual" temporality, remain indifferent. While the environmental humanities and eco-psychology have analysed these phenomena, political theorists are lagging behind. This paper addresses this gap by bringing theories of representation and chronopolitics to bear on a flurry of recently published memoirs chronicling activists' emotional and temporal alienation. I read these as self-authorized representative claims aiming, first, to summon the already-grieving into a self-aware constituency and second, to bridge what P.J. Brendese has termed the "segregated temporalities" of hegemonic and environmentalists' time. I argue that these texts illuminate a key aspect of representation in the context of environmental crisis: that it can be primarily understood as grounded in a chronopolitical conflict over competing understandings of time. This document is a short autobiography by Rien van Genuchten, who received the 2023 Wolf Prize in agriculture for his work on water flow and contaminant transport in soils. The paper deals with memory, identity, and belonging issues in the autobiographical novel Warm Arctic Nights by a distinguished Ukrainian American writer, Yuriy Tarnawsky. The novel shares the story of a youth whose life was disrupted by the turmoil of World War II in the Polish-Ukrainian borderlands. The analysis aims to establish a connection between identity formation through narration and changing functions of the borders, from reliable and well-protected toward violated and porous ones. Thus, the novel is re-read through the analytical lenses of identity and border poetics. The analysis stems from the concepts of “biographical me” and “identity set” suggested by Neil MacKinnon and David Heise (2010). The paper revises the personal and collective identities of the protagonist, images of Others, and topographical, symbolic, and epistemological borders inside and outside the text. The author of the paper places Ukrainian migrants’ experience of trauma, loss, and displacement into a broader context of border crossings in times of war.

Numerous studies affirm the importance of students' attitudes for mathematical education. This study uses mathematical autobiographical essays to examine the mathematical experiences and attitudes of undergraduate students enrolled in mathematics classes at a Midwestern University in the United States. The essays of 41 students (20 men, 21 women) out of 170 enrolled in College Algebra, Precalculus, and Calculus were analyzed using the categories of (1) confidence in mathematics ability, (2) value of mathematics, and (3) liking of mathematics. This paper provides context and theoretical depth to student reports of their attitudes in these categories. Statements at the intersections of both confidence and liking, and value and liking provide additional insights. First, students who perceive mathematics as valuable are more likely to like it. Second, the vast majority of students talk about confidence and liking together, and with a positive correlation. Further, these students tend to talk about liking or not liking mathematics because of their perceived ability in mathematics. Our study suggests the importance of proactive teaching strategies to improve students' perceptions of the value, liking of, and their confidence in, mathematics, and also suggests self-efficacy as a potential theoretical basis for this work. This paper provides concrete suggestions for teaching two Holocaust testimonies, Irene Hauser's diary and Ruth Klüger's memoir Still Alive. Hauser's and Klüger's texts effectively illustrate the differences between diaries and memoirs while recounting similar experiences. Such a comparative analysis, I argue, achieves two goals: First, by comparing two different types of autobiographical texts, students gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the complexities, contradictions, and tensions inherent in autobiographical writing, ultimately encouraging students to become more accepting of ambiguity in their learning. Second, by focusing on Holocaust testimonies, students learn about persecution, injustice, and oppression, increasing their awareness of global issues, interculturalism, and social justice. Contemporary Arab feminist writers such as Margot Badran and Mona Eltahawy describe their personal discovery of Arab "pioneers." This label positions "pioneers" as exceptional figures, which untethers their legacy from contemporary Arab feminists, and from one another. Drawing on the Warwick Research Collective's concept of "combined and uneven development," this essay rethinks how we understand the first wave to account for the feminist histories in al-mashreq, and therefore reimagines the feminist wave model to account for waves of transmission, of emotion such as inspiration drawn from solidarity with other women. Through analysis of Anglophone scholarship and biographies, translated autobiographical writings of "pioneers," and analysis of L'Egyptienne magazine, this article offers a new way of framing the work of "pioneer" feminists as part of a wide network of collaborators, and a wave of feminist activism that is locally and globally imbricated. This paper examines women's journals and salons which contribute to a period of "invisible feminism" from 1860 to the early 1920s. This paper examines the functioning of the federal cabinet Pakistan from 1993 to 1999. It investigates how the Cabinet was involved in designing economic and foreign policy. It analyzes that the elected governments during the said period were not independent in taking decisions in a lot of foreign policy issues or in designing policy related to foreign concerns of Pakistan. However, like first term of both the Prime Ministers (PMs), the Cabinet enjoyed privilege to formulate policy on economic aspects. The study seeks that the performance of the cabinet varied during regimes of both the PMs. Cabinet tried to revive its status during second regime of Benazir Bhutto but again was not successful as either establishment on foreign policy formulation or PM secretariat on economic policy-formulation remained seat of decision-making. Secondly, coalition partners of the regime also made it difficult to give approval to the plans, not suited to them. Whereas PM Nawaz Sharif was also more interested to take decisions on his own or with the involvement of his inner circle on economic policy formulation in place of giving decision-making power to the Cabinet. The study explores that the elected governments can work in a better way and system of democracy strengthens in case Federal cabinet is given its due status and share in power. Printed primary sources including biographies and autobiographies of PMs and Ministers, published interviews of various ministers, newspapers besides a number of secondary sources have been consulted to build the argument in this study. This article explores the told-to autobiographical account of Suraiya Banu, an 'extra-actress' who served as a body double for leading actresses in South India's soft porn industry. Set against the backdrop of both the industry's rise and the emergence of life writing in Kerala, it examines how Banu engages with her past and present. She justifies her unusual storytelling as a lesson for readers, as narrating one's life is atypical for ordinary individuals. This blend of anomaly and ordinariness is pivotal to understanding the methodological aspects of life writing. While truth and fact often blur in autobiographies, Banu's life story gains significance from its combination of the strange and the ordinary. Despite claiming to represent many others, her experiences remain uniquely anomalous. Embracing anonymity as a body double, Banu's identity becomes intertwined with her fate, resulting in a palimpsestic body overwritten with various faces and identities. This article illuminates how Banu's narrative challenges conventional notions of autobiography while highlighting the complexities of identity, anonymity, and storytelling in marginalised contexts. This article is an autobiographical account of a research career in inflammatory diseases, mechanisms and pharmacotherapy, drug research and development, in academia and industry in various European countries spanning the last 55 years. The author describes how tenacity and independent thought, learned in formative years, and tempered later by the development of good relationships with colleagues have guided his career. This has spanned research, among other fields, on prostaglandins as pro-and anti-inflammatory mediators, oxidative stress and antioxidants, phospholipid mediators, cytokines, innate and adaptive immune responses and the establishment of various inflammatory and immunological models. The author has helped discover and develop novel therapeutic approaches to pain, arthritic, dermatological, respiratory, and autoimmune disorders and contributed to bringing eight drug candidates to clinical trials. He has helped establish new research labs in four different centres and been involved in teaching undergraduate and mature students in three different universities. With extensive experience in scientific publishing and several international awards, he emphasises that without good teamwork, little can be achieved in scientific research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

I started my journey as a nutrition scholar in 1974 when I began PhD studies at Cornell University. My journey has been rich with opportunity. I engaged in research on diet-related risks for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer, partly motivated by my strong commitment to addressing health disparities affecting Black Americans. Obesity became my major focus and would eventually involve both US and global lenses. This focus was also linked to other dietary intake issues and health disparities and drew on knowledge I had gained in my prior study and practice of social work. I positioned myself as a bridge builder across nutrition, epidemiology, and public health, advocating for certain new ways of thinking and acting in these spheres and in the academy itself. Writing a career retrospective for this prestigious series is a huge challenge. Is my story really of that much interest? One thing that is different about my life in science is the heavy influence of the turmoil of the past century. Born in the US, raised in East Germany, and returning to the US relatively late in life, I experienced research under both suboptimal and privileged conditions. My scientific story, like the political winds that blew me from one continent to the next, involved shifts into different fields. For advice to young scientists, I would suggest: Don't be afraid to start something new, it pays to be persistent, and science is a passion. In addition to telling my own story, this article also provides the opportunity to express my gratitude to my trainees and colleagues and to convey my conviction that we have the best job on earth. War poetry voices the traumatic cultural productions and sensitivity through the formal, aesthetic and creative dimensions of psychical responses. A perpetual trauma is imprinted on the psyche and the cultural memory of the people living through wars. To witness the representative suffering, war poetry needs to be examined from experiential and embodied dimensions of cognitive perception. Mosab Abu Toha is an acclaimed Palestinian poet who represents his affective experiences, to lament over the displacement, loss and cultural clashes he witnesses, in his autobiographical poetry. The research highlights that Abu Toha, in his transitional poetic space of the selected poem, invokes the receptiveness of witnessing through the defamilairized graphic images and syntactic representation which are foregrounded. Further, the prototypical cognitive models in his selected poem are both situational and cultural. The research is significant in examining the embodied and experiential dimensions of language processing in the poetic space to encode the readers' positionalities and the linguistic structures that invoke the specific perspective in readers' imagination. Trying to address a series of large questions—e.g., when peasants rebel, clandestine forms of resistance, state "imagination," and the origin of the very first agrarian states—led me to abandon much of the standard political science "tool kit." Telehealth-based care models are being widely adopted by primary care providers and large healthcare institutions. Drawing on data collected at an international conference on the theory and practice of telechaplaincy, this article identifies and discusses how chaplains navigate various telechaplaincy-related challenges. A thematic analysis identified 49 codes and 11 themes at the individual-, organizational- and population levels. Presenters reported facing novel and qualitatively distinct challenges spanning an array of telechaplains' professional activities, including the structure of work routines, the types of interventions used, the ways provider-patient connections are established and experienced, the strategic positioning of chaplains, their role in the model of care, and ultimately, the populations served. It is argued that, though telechaplaincy has gained prominence since the Covid-19 pandemic, the maintenance of professional standards in digital care settings is a systemic challenge related to long-term trends towards outpatient care. Serendipity, curiosity, and lived experience shaped my career as a social demographer and my interests in social policy. I transitioned from the humanities to sociology and demography as a graduate student at the University of Texas at Austin, where I discovered my affinity for quantitative research. My interest in Latin American demography gave way to domestic concerns as new opportunities arose at each of the three institutions where I have had the privilege to work—the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Chicago, and Princeton University. That all three institutions hosted vibrant demography and policy programs facilitated my research about the Hispanic population, family structure, urban poverty, college access, and myriad aspects of socioeconomic inequality and immigrant integration. Superb colleagues and talented graduate student collaborators deserve major credit for my career accomplishments. This paper analyses the relationship between masturbation and literary creation, taking as a reference the memoirs and some poems by Carlos Barral. For this purpose, it also considers texts by other authors, who lived through Franco's repression just like Barral or simply gave their own meaning to the search for intimate pleasure implied by autoeroticism. The essay aims to study the ways in which literary and sexual subjectivity feed back into each other, in an era marked by censorship and silence.

The study aims to explore the specific features of the modern reception of J.-J. Rousseau’s “Confessions”. The theoretical framework of the research is grounded on the ideas advanced by T. Avtuxovych, M.Czermińska, M.Głowiński, W.Iser, R. Jakobson, H.R.Jauss, P.Lejeune, Yu. Lotman, V.Tjupa, Zh. Starobinskiy and other scholars. The researchers describe the semiotic model of literary communication and the theory of the text by Yuri Lotman. The research was conducted using historic-functional, hermeneutic, receptive, and theoretical analysis methods. An attempt is made in this paper to show how the process of “decoding” the meanings intended by the author in the text takes place. In particular, the authors study how Rousseau’s “Confessions” functions in the structure of modern literary communication. The specific objectives of the present study are the meanings of “Confessions” are read by the contemporary recipient and which ones are relegated to the background compared to the literary communication of the eighteenth century. The common discourse code of the author and the reader is the key to successful communication and understanding of the specifics of the project of Rousseau’s life writing. At the same time, the success and specificity of artistic communication are influenced by the difference in discourse code meanings related to the time distance between the author and the recipient and the layering of new historical and cultural patterns in the reader’s consciousness. At the thematic level, three main themes are considered, including: a) the social origin of the autobiographical subject, b) his conflict with society, and c) the protagonist’s intimate self-disclosure. Thus, the article provides a detailed examination of the motif of the social origin of the autobiographical character. On the topic of the social origin of the character, instead of the plebeian’s right to public attention for the contemporary reader, the value of education and knowledge, freedom of speech and individual liberty are being actualised. Of particular note is the theme of the conflict between a character and society, the idea of the human right to otherness, the right to personal liberty and the right to choose the concept of one’s own life comes to the forefront. Thus, a literary text realises the social function of literature. The reading of the character’s self-disclosure by an attentive reader (from Rousseau’s contemporary to modern readers) has a twofold purpose: first, to encourage everyone to live the experience of the character and thus to think about themselves, and second, to reflect on society as a whole. It testifies to the fact that in the aspect of self-disclosure of the meaning of “Confessions”, the transformation of confession as an external form of a religious rite of repentance addressed to God into the narrative genre of confessional autobiography addressed to a human reader of the story is actualized. The study demonstrated a need for continuation of the study in the aspect of reader reception to contribute to the perception of its place in the contemporary literary and cultural space.

This paper sets forth to investigate biographical data in the Gheorghe Grigurcu written confessions. Considering elements of his most revealing interviews conducted by the writers such as Flori Bălănescu and Dora Pavel, the profile of a contemporary writer engaged in the negotiation of his own identity is outlined. The autobiographical references drawn from the writer’s confessions will help us understand his individuality and creative spirit. Gheorghe Grigurcu’s hypersensitive personality projects empathy towards the oppressed and the helpless. He feels an acute but repressed nostalgia for his homeland. The “Bessarabianness” was also revealed in his attitude towards the work of B.P. Hasdeu and Paul Goma. Disappointments resulting from friendship and love relationships amplify the feeling of inadaptability. The feeling of marginalisation is balanced by agape love, which creates the compensatory universe indispensable to the writer. Trained in the process of negotiating his own identity, Gheorghe Grigurcu finds that human harmony can all be easily disturbed by the temptation to compare himself with those around him, by the obsessive Other.
