The use of microalgae and bacteria as a strategy for the startup of bioreactors for the treatment of industrial wastewater can be a sustainable and economically viable alternative. This technology model provides satisfactory results in the nitrification and denitrification process for nitrogen removal, organic matter removal, biomass growth, sedimentation, and byproducts recovery for added-value product production. The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of microalgae and bacteria in their symbiotic process when used in the treatment of paper pulp industry wastewater. The experiment, lasting fourteen days, utilized four bioreactors with varying concentrations in mgVSS/L of microalgae to bacteria ratio (R1-100:100, R2-100:300, R3-100:500, R4-300:100) in the startup process. Regarding the sludge volumetric index (SVI), the results show that the R1 and R2 reactors developed SVI30/SVI10 biomass in the range of 85.57 ± 7.33% and 84.72 ± 8.19%, respectively. The lipid content in the biomass of reactors R1, R2, R3 e R4 was 13%, 7%, 19%, and 22%, respectively. This high oil content at the end of the batch, may be related to the nutritional stress that the species underwent during this feeding regime. In terms of chlorophyll, the bioreactor with an initial inoculation of 100:100 showed better symbiotic growth of microalgae and bacteria, allowing exponential growth of microalgae. The total chlorophyll value for this bioreactor was 801.46 ± 196.96 μg/L. Biological removal of nitrogen from wastewater from the paper pulp industry is a challenge due to the characteristics of the effluent, but the four reactors operated in a single batch obtained good nitrogen removal. The proper treatment and utilization of kraft black liquor, generated from the pulp and paper industry through the kraft pulping method, is required to reduce environmental impacts prior to the final disposal. It also improves the economic performance through the utilization of waste. Microbial valorization appears to demonstrates the dual benefits of waste management and resource recovery by providing an innovative solution to convert kraft black liquor into resource for reuse. A comprehensive review on the microbial valorization of kraft black liquor, describing the role in valorization and management, is still lacking in the literature, forming the rationale of this article. Thus, the present study reviews and systematically discusses the potential of utilizing microorganisms to valorize kraft black liquor as a sustainable feedstock to develop a numerous portfolio of platform chemicals, bioenergy, and other value-added products. This work contributes to sustainability and resource efficiency within the pulp and paper industry. The recent developments in utilization of synthetic biology tools and molecular techniques, including omics approaches for engineering novel microbial strains, for enhancing kraft black liquor valorization has been presented. This review explores how the better utilization of kraft black liquor in the pulp and paper industry contributes to achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly clean water and sanitation (SDG 6) as well as the affordable and clean energy goal (SDG 7). The current review also addresses challenges related to toxicity, impurities, low productivity, and downstream processing that serve as obstacles to the progress of developing highly efficient bioproducts. The new directions for future research efforts to fill the critical knowledge gaps are proposed. This study concludes that by implementing microbial valorization techniques, the pulp and paper industry can transition from a linear to a circular bioeconomy and eco-friendly manage the kraft black liuor. An innovative circular economy (CE) system was implemented at the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Brunswick. The performance of the CE system was evaluated for 4 years: the thermal pressure hydrolysis enhanced the methane production by 18% and increased the digestate dewaterability by 14%. Refractory COD formed in thermal hydrolysis and increased the COD concentration in the WWTP effluent by 4 mg L -1 while still complying with the legal threshold. Struvite production reached high phosphorus recovery rates of >80% with a Mg:P molar ratio ≥0.8. Nitrogen was successfully recovered as ammonium sulfate with high recovery rates of 85-97%. The chemical analyses of secondary fertilizers showed a low pollutant content, posing low risks to soil and groundwater ecosystems. The total carbon footprint of the WWTP decreased due to enhanced biogas production, the recovery of renewable fertilizers and a further reduction of nitrous oxide emissions. With increasing demand of fossil fuels and water pollution and their environmental impacts, marine green microalgae have gained special attention in both scientific and industrial  fields. This is due to their fast growth in non-arable lands with high photosynthetic activity, their metabolic plasticity, as well as their high CO 2 capture capacity. Tetraselmis species, green and eukaryotic microalgae, are not only considered as a valuable source of biomolecules including pigments, lipids, and starch but also widely used in biotechnological applications. Tetraselmis cultivation for high-value biomolecules and industrial use was demonstrated to be a non-cost-effective strategy because of its low demand in nutrients, such as phosphorus and nitrogen. Recently, phycoremediation of wastewater rich in nutrients, chemicals, and heavy metals has become an efficient and economic-alternative that allows the detoxification of waters and induces mechanisms in algal cells for biomolecules rich-energy synthesis to regulate their metabolic pathways. This review aims to shed light on Tetraselmis species for their different culture conditions and metabolites bioaccumulation, as well as their human health and environmental applications. The present investigation has evaluated the use of effluents from a secondary municipal wastewater treatment plant for biomass production and potential of the biomass for biodiesel production. Cultivations of Chlorella vulgaris using wastewater, wastewater with supplementation, and WC medium were carried out. Effect of wastewater collected in different months on biomass productivity (BP) and lipid composition was studied. Methods based on NMR and GC-MS techniques were applied for determining the composition of the lipids and their fatty acid profile including poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Lipids extracted are comprised of both neutral (tri acyl glycerides, TAG; free fatty acids, FFA) and polar (glyco glycero/phospho) lipids. The TAG content of the extracted lipids was determined in the range of 22.5-41.3% w/w. The NMR and GC-MS compositional results of microalgal lipids of biomasses cultivated in wastewater without nutrient supplementation, collected in different months, showed potential for biodiesel production. The fatty acid profiles of neutral and polar lipids, which are mainly comprised of saturated and unsaturated long alkyl chain (C16-C22) fatty acids, are potential sources for the biodiesel and food industry. The concentration of nitrates (45-78 mg L -1 ) in wastewater without supplementation, collected in different months, was found to be optimum to enable cultivation of biomasses with reasonably good BP of 21.5-28.1 mg L -1  day -1 . Similar results have been obtained in the present work as well as reported in the literature in the case of WC medium (nitrate, 69 mg L -1 ) with BP of 25.5-28.2 mg L -1  day -1 , thus highlighted the significance of the presented work., (© 2024. Renewable and sustainable biofuel production, such as biobutanol, is becoming increasingly popular as a substitute for non-renewable and depleted petrol fuel. Many researchers have studied how to produce butanol cheaply by considering appropriate feedstock materials and bioprocess technologies. The production of biobutanol through acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) is highly sought after around the world because of its sustainable supply and lack of competition with food. The purpose of this study is to present the current biobutanol production research and to analyse the biobutanol research conducted during 2006 to 2023. The keyword used in this study is "Biobutanol," and the relevant data was extracted from the Web of Science database (WoS). According to the results, institutions and scholars from the People's Republic of China, the USA, and India have the highest number of cited papers across a broad spectrum of topics including acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation, biobutanol, various pretreatment techniques, and pervaporation. The success of biobutanol fermentation from biomass depends on the ability of the fermentation operation to match the microbial behaviour along with the appropriate bioprocessing strategies to improve the entire process to be suitable for industrial scale. The use of nanomaterials in biofuel production from lignocellulosic biomass offers a promising approach to simultaneously address environmental sustainability and economic viability. This review provides an overview of the environmental and economic implications of integrating nanotechnology into biofuel production from low-cost lignocellulosic biomass. In this review, we highlight the potential benefits and challenges of nano-based biofuel production. Nanomaterials provide opportunities to improve feedstock pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation, and catalysis, resulting in enhanced process efficiency, lower energy consumption, and reduced environmental impact. Conducting life cycle assessments is crucial for evaluating the overall environmental footprint of biofuel production. An economic perspective that focuses on the cost implications of utilizing nanomaterials in biofuel production is also discussed. A comprehensive understanding of both environmental and economic dimensions is essential to fully harness the potential of nanomaterials in biofuel production from lignocellulosic biomass and to move towards sustainable future energy., (© 2024. Herbal waste produced during the manufacturing of herbal products is a potential feedstock for anaerobic digestion due to high amount of organic matter that can be transformed into biogas as an energy resource. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to convert herbal waste produced during the manufacturing of common of Ayurveda products into biogas through anaerobic digestion process using batch test study under controlled mesophilic temperature conditions of 35 °C with food to inoculum ratio of 0.75. The maximum biomethane potential (BMP) of 0.90 (gCH 4 COD/g COD fed ) and sludge activity of 0.70 (gCH 4 -CD/gVSS) was exhibited by WS herbal waste owing to its high chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 4 g/g and better solubilization potential of the organic matter showing change in volatile suspended solids (ΔVSS) of 79%. On the other hand, the waste derived from the TA herb, exhibited the least biogas yield of 0.55 (gCH 4 COD/g COD fed ) and sludge activity of 0.40 (gCH 4 -CD/gVSS), albeit with higher organic matter present. This was due to the possible hindrance of waste solubilization by the presence of lignin. The waste derived from VVL and PE showed intermediate BMP and sludge activity. The methane generation rate constant (k), a key indicator of the biodegradation potential, was also evaluated. The k values showed similar trend as of BMP values ranging from 0.081 to 0.15 d -1 thus indicating the influence of presence of lignin and the change in ΔVSS. The organic wastes and residues generated from agricultural, industrial, and domestic activities have the potential to be converted to bioenergy. One such energy is biogas, which has already been included in rural areas as an alternative cooking energy source and agricultural activities. It is produced via anaerobic digestion of a wide range of organic nutrient sources and is an essential renewable energy source. The factors influencing biogas yield, i.e., the various substrate, their characteristics, pretreatment methods involved, different microbial types, sources, and inoculum properties, are analyzed. Furthermore, the optimization of these parameters, along with fermentation media optimization, such as optimum pH, temperature, and anaerobic digestion strategies, is discussed. Novel approaches of bioaugmentation, co-digestion, phase separation, co-supplementation, nanotechnology, and biorefinery approach have also been explored for biogas production. Anaerobic treatment of oily substrate, known as grease trap waste (GTW), was investigated for its practicability via continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) at different operating conditions and selected recovery strategies of feeding frequency efficacy. This study determine the performance of feeding frequency efficacy, namely feeding every 24 hours (R 24H ) and feeding every 12 hours (R 12H ). Under organic loading rate (OLR) of 2.2 gCOD/L.day, R 12H exhibited methane composition of 57%, methane production rate of 0.27 LCH 4 /L.day, and methane yield of 0.14 LCH 4 /gCOD removed . At the same OLR, R 24H recorded methane composition of 60%, methane production rate of 0.29 LCH 4 /L.day and similar methane yield as R 12H . Findings indicated that R 24H showed performance comparable to that of R 12H . Given minor variation observed in performance, it is recommended that plant operators may consider scheduling two feedings per day for low loading conditions and switch to one feeding per day for higher loading conditions. This strategy is designed to balance the system and prevent shock loads, which could lead to plant shutdowns. Next, it delves into the advancements in biodiesel applications, highlighting its versatility and potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. The heart of the review focuses on transesterification, the key process in biodiesel production. It provides an in-depth analysis of various catalysts, including homogeneous, heterogeneous, enzyme-based, and nanomaterial catalysts, exploring their distinct characteristics and behavior during transesterification. The review also sheds light on the transesterification reaction mechanism and kinetics, emphasizing the importance of kinetic modeling in process optimization. Recent developments in biodiesel production, including feedstock selection, process optimization, and sustainability, are discussed, along with the challenges related to engine performance, emissions, and compatibility that hinder wider biodiesel adoption. The current manuscript focuses on the advancements made in establishing zone-based biogas plants in India from 1990 to the present. India generates various types of waste from agricultural, industrial, and human activities. Several methods are available to manage and derive energy from these waste materials, such as incineration, gasification, and anaerobic digestion (AD). Among these options, AD stands out as one of the most viable and environmentally friendly alternatives for biogas production, thanks to its low energy consumption. However, developing biogas plants in developing countries faces significant challenges, primarily due to governments' inadequate application of policy, financial, social, market, information, and technical constraints. To compile this information, data from various agencies in India have been gathered, revealing that 1.81 million biogas plants are currently installed in the West Zone, 1.48 million in the South Zone, 1.106 million in the North Zone, and 0.65 million in the East Zone. These biogas plants across the zones generate 7.02 lakh m 3 per day. Additionally, 22 bio-CNG plants produce 84,759 kg/day of compressed biogas, and 201 waste plants generate 330.935 MW of electricity. Recently, the government has emphasized several initiatives, including GOBAR-DHAN, New National Biogas and Organic Manure, Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation, and the waste-to-energy program. The objective of this study is to analyze the economic viability of municipal household solid waste (organic matter + paper) for the production of gas, coke and biofuel through the pyrolysis and distillation process. The waste was collected in the city of Belém do Pará-Brazil and pretreated at the Federal University of Pará. The analyzed fraction (organic matter + paper) was subjected to the pretreatment of drying, crushing, and sieving and was subsequently subjected to proximate characterization and, finally, pyrolysis of the organic fraction (organic matter + paper) in a fixed bed reactor. Initially, it was necessary to review the literature, and with the yields obtained by pyrolysis of the fraction, economic feasibility analyses were carried out. The economic indicators for evaluating the most viable pyrolysis process were basic payback, discounted payback, net present value, internal rate of return, and profitability index, which are all financial metrics commonly used in investment analysis and decision making. These metrics provide valuable insights into the financial viability and attractiveness of investment projects. They are essential tools for assessing the feasibility and profitability of various ventures, helping decision-makers make informed choices in allocating resources. The analysis of the indicators showed the economic viability considering an analysis horizon of 10 years of materials based on organic material and paper. The breakeven point obtained was USD 0.96/dm3 and the minimum biofuel sales price found in this project was USD 1.30/dm3. The sensitivity research found that material costs (organic matter + paper), bio-oil yield, total project investment and electricity, respectively, are the variables that most affect the minimum biofuel sales price. The global diffusion of biotechnology has played a pivotal role in restructuring the global order in the post-Cold War era. Institution of a strong domestic base in biotech has arguably allowed emerging economies in the Global South to negotiate with developed countries from a position of strength. This paper critically examines the rise of Brazil as a case in point to examine the role of biotechnology as a great equaliser of power in North-South relations. It identifies the institution of a strong domestic biotechnology base as a primary facilitator of Brazil's emergence as a globally influential player. The paper does so through delineating the various means through which Brazil has drawn from biotechnology to boost its international image and influence. Firstly, it analyses the nuances within Brazil's domestic biotechnology strategy while underlining their catalytic effect in driving fast-paced advances in the field. Brazil's policy successes with respect to genomics and biofuels are highlighted. The paper discusses Brazil's employment of biotechnology as an effective foreign policy tool in niche diplomacy ventures of health, agriculture, and biofuels to grow its clout in the Global South. Brazil's tactful ability to combine its biotechnology expertise with skilful diplomatic manoeuvring to pioneer novel normative paradigms that favour the Global South has been studied. The paper concludes that Brazil's biotechnology strategy presents a good model for emerging economies in Asia and Africa to emulate to improve their relative standing in the multipolar world. Straw, the primary agricultural waste, constitutes approximately 20% of the total biomass in the EU. Only a small fraction of the material is applied in various products, e.g., animal bedding, mulch, building, and composite materials, while a significantly larger portion is often burned in the field. This practice, while prohibited for several reasons, including the increased risk of fire and the release of carbon dioxide contributing to global warming, is still prevalent. Given the increasingly evident effects of climate change, EU legislation aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible. One of the strategies includes applying the cascade principle in the circular economy. This principle aims to use the entire raw material, in this case, cereal crops, such that the products with the highest added value, like cellulose fibers from cereal straw, are extracted first. The vast potential for utilizing lignocellulosic agro-waste sustainably arises from its status as the most abundant organic compound on Earth. Its significant presence, renewability, and biodegradability make it a desirable source for producing materials in numerous industries. This study examines the potential of wheat fibers, isolated from the straw of two distinct cultivars (Srpanjka represents an old variety, and Kraljica represents the new variety) primarily for application in technical textiles. The following testing methods were applied: determination of wheat fibers and residues yield, fibers tensile properties, length, moisture content/regain, density, morphology, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The yield of isolated fibers relies on the wheat variety and the climatic conditions affecting plant growth, resulting in fiber yields from 10.91% to 15.34%. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis indicates reduced peak intensity, which is related to hemicellulose and lignin content, suggesting their improved deposition following the process of chemical maceration. Wheat fiber quality was found to be comparable to cotton fibers regarding its density. However, they showed a significant difference in higher moisture regain (9.72–11.40%). The vast majority of the scientific papers related to wheat fibers did not indicate the length of the individual fibers obtained by chemical maceration nor their strength. Therefore, this paper indicated that both varieties demonstrated sufficient fiber tenacity (greater than 10 cN/tex) and fiber length (2–3 cm), stressing the spinning potential of these fibers into yarns and extending their use to the apparel industry. Moreover, our research underscores the feasibility of adhering to the zero-waste principle. A high percentage of solid waste remaining after fiber extraction (25.3–39.5%) was successfully used for biofuel production, thus closing the loop in the circular economy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Heavy metal pollution is a gradually growing environmental issue that hinders the growth and development of plants, and also destabilizes soil. Consequently, eco-friendly phytoremediation methods have gained traction, with energy crops emerging as a particularly effective solution. Energy crops not only provide high-quality plant materials for detoxification and remediation of heavy metal pollution, but also possess energy properties conducive to biofuel production. Therefore, this paper delves into the tolerance mechanism of energy crops towards heavy metal toxicity, elucidating processes such as root complex-mediated inhibition of metal migration and response to reactive oxygen species (ROS) through heavy metal-related proteins, enzyme systems, reactive nitrogen species (RNS), and hormones. Moreover, it summarizes the heavy metals remediation mechanisms of energy crops, including uptake, translocation, chelation, immobilization, and sequestration. This paper explores applications of energy crops in heavy metal pollution remediation, emphasizing the methods for efficient biochar remediation and biofuel generation. Furthermore, potential challenges in using energy crops for heavy metal pollution remediation are outlined. By systematically examining the function mechanisms and prospective applications of energy crops in heavy metal pollution bioremediation, this paper serves as a valuable reference for both research and practical implementation in this field. Dry anaerobic digestion (dry-AD) is an attractive process for solid wastes such as agri-food waste. However, some limitations mainly associated to lack of effective mixing, can hinder the methane production capacity of the systems. Bulking agent (BA) has been proposed as a solution to the compaction issues in systems without mechanical agitation, such as leaching bed reactors. However, effects of BA are still not clear, and, thus, the factors to consider for its dose has not been optimized yet. This work studies the effect of BA in dry-AD. Two substrates with different characteristics were proposed as models, bean peel as a lignocellulosic substrate and a mixture of food waste as a readily biodegradable substrate. Inert plastic rings were used as BA at different BA:S ratios. Assessed BA:S ratio did not affect the performance of methane production for the lignocellulosic waste, but it did significantly affect to the easily biodegradable substrate, showing up to a 28% of methane production increase. This result could be due to the presence of lignocellulosic compounds in the bean peel, behaving like a natural BA. In assays with an increased bed height, the compaction of the system was more severe, resulting in the rapid acidification of the processes. At these conditions, the positive effect of BA addition was more marked, allowing methane production and no acidification of the system. This study synthesized novel, green, and easily recoverable surface-modified economical catalysts via hydrothermal treatment (HT) successfully, utilizing biogas residue biochar (BRB), a food waste product from anaerobic fermentation, pyrolyzed at 500 °C for 50 min. Using autoclaves, a total of six solutions were prepared, each having 1 g fine-grinded BRB, surficial modified by adding glycerol (GL) (10 or 20 mL) and SDI water (70 or 60 mL), and heated in an oven at 240 °C, 180 °C, and 120 °C for 24 h. Afterward, the catalysts showed the potential for degradation of widely used emerging pollutants like ciprofloxacin. Taking advantage of catalytic surface modification, the catalytic ozonation degradation was more effective than that of a single ozonation. However, under similar conditions, catalyst amount 0.20 g, ozone dose 15 mg L -1 , and ciprofloxacin 80 mg L -1 , the performance of the 10 mL GL-180 °C catalyst was excellent. It showed a 92.45%-94.41% optimum removal rate in the 8-10 min interval. After five continuous cycles, the 10 mL GL-180 °C catalyst exhibited excellent stability and reusability. XPS, FT-IR, BET, XRD, and SEM before and after the reaction confirmed the successful synthesis and degradation mechanism. In the context of biorefinery, researchers have been looking for lignocellulosic biomasses and ideal treatments to produce economically viable biofuels. In this scenario, the bamboo culm appears as a plant matrix of great potential, given the high cellulose content of low crystallinity. Thus, the objective and differential of this work was to determine the best conditions for enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose extracted from bamboo culm and to evaluate its potential application in the production of bioethanol through Separate Hydrolysis and Fermentation (SHF) and Saccharification and Simultaneous Fermentation (SSF) by Saccharomyces cerevisiae modified via CRISPR/Cas9. The average cellulose extraction yield was 41.87 % with an extraction efficiency of 86.76 %. In general, as the hydrolysis time increased, an increase in glucose production was observed in almost all assays, with higher hydrolysis efficiency values at 72 h. The results ranged from 2.09 to 19.8 g/L of glucose obtained with efficiency values of 10.47 to 99 %. The best conditions were found in test 5 (temperature of 36 °C and pH 5.0, with only 10 FPU/g of substrate Cellic Ctec2 Novozymes ® cocktail). It is observed that for all hydrolysis times the independent variables pH and temperature were significant under the hydrolysis efficiency, showing a negative effect, indicating that higher values of the same promote lower values of the response variable. Solids concentration, temperature, and digester configuration were subjected to biomethanation study to identify effective retrofitting schemes for old swine waste digesters. Batch assays were commenced to determine an appropriate scenario at 30-55 °C and total solids 1-3 %TS. Sub-thermophilic temperature (45 °C) was found desirable with an additional 11.1 % methane yield, while digestion at higher TS induced ammonium inhibition. Subsequent batch experiments lasted 72 hrs for hydrolytic-acidogenic assessment under various temperatures. Heating control at 45 °C and 55 °C for 24 hrs increased hydrolysis efficiency 4.6-5.7 folds above control but showed no significant difference (α = 0.05) between them. Limited heat supply from biogas engine dictated the continuous digestion study to operate pre-hydrolysis reactor at maximum temperature of 45 °C. The two-stage strategy demonstrated best overall performances at the sub-thermphilic combination, raising methane yield by 35.4 %. Hydrogen-ethanol co-production can significantly improve the energy conversion efficiency of corn stalk (CS). In this study, with CS as the raw material, the co-production characteristics of one-step and two-step photo-fermentation hydrogen production (PFHP) and ethanol production were investigated. In addition, the gas and liquid characteristics of the experiment were analyzed. The kinetics of hydrogen-ethanol co-production was calculated, and the economics of hydrogen and ethanol were analyzed. Results of the experiments indicated that the two-step hydrogen-ethanol co-production had the best hydrogen production performance when the concentration of CS was 25 g/L. The total hydrogen production was 350.08 mL, and the hydrogen yield was 70.02 mL/g, which was 2.45 times higher than that of the one-step method. The efficiency of hydrogen-ethanol co-production was 17.79 %, which was 2.76 times more efficient than hydrogen compared to fermentation with hydrogen. Energy self-circulation systems, defined as energy systems incorporating the recycling utilization of waste biomass, have been proposed to reduce greenhouse gases emissions from livestock sector. In this study, a comprehensive review of the situation and challenges of biogas utilization in the livestock industry was provided. Moreover, two technological routes were proposed for a circular livestock system combined with Powerfuels production (CP-CLS), starting from biogas combustion for power generation and steam reforming to the sustainable development path of synthesizing, storing, and utilizing Powerfuels. The self-circulation capability and comprehensive benefits of the CP-CLS life cycle was discussed, along with future application scenarios and proposed standards for Powerfuels. To realize this potential, continuous research, development, and policy support are crucial. The Fossetto landfill has operated in the municipality of Monsummano Terme (Tuscany, Italy) since 1988, being considered a state-of-the-art landfill for 35 years. Initially, Fossetto acted as a conventional sanitary landfill for mixed municipal solid waste. With changes in regulations and technology, the Fossetto landfill was gradually equipped with a biogas recovery and valorisation system, a mechanical-biological treatment (MBT) plant in 2003 and a reverse osmosis leachate treatment plant, so the concentrated leachate has been recirculated back into the landfill body since 2006. Long-term biogas monitoring, enables the calculation of the efficiency of biogas recovery using a rather simplified methodology, which was assessed as being approximately 40% over the prior ten-years period. This value was lower than expected, confirming the results of previous studies and indicating the need of attributes. Applying the USEPA LandGEM model showed that the adoption of MBT substantially reduced biogas generation yields and rates by up to approximately 90% which was facilitated by the adoption of landfill leachate recirculation transforming the conventional landfill into a bioreactor. Detailed fugitive emission monitoring has allowed the evaluation of the impact of the cover type (final or temporary) and the emissions hotspots. From these results, possible remedial actions have been suggested including the more frequent monitoring of the fugitive emissions using simple and cost-effective methods (e.g., UAVs). Microalgal biomass is gaining increasing attention to produce high-value co-products. This study proposes integrating Chlorella microalgal biomass into a zero-waste biorefining system, aiming to produce biodiesel and biofertilizer. It investigates optimal conditions for ultrasound-assisted deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment and lipid recovery to enhance the extraction of lipids. Optimal DES pretreatment was identified as a 1.6:1 acetic acid-to-choline chloride molar ratio, 0.36 g biomass loading, and 2.50 min of pretreatment. Lipid recovery succeeded with a 10-minute extraction time and a 1:3 methanol-to-butanol volume ratio. These conditions yielded biodiesel-quality lipids at 139.52 mg/g microalgal biomass with superior fuel characteristics. The de-oiled microalgal biomass residue exhibited promise as a lettuce biofertilizer, enhancing photosynthetic pigments but potentially reducing yields by 40 %. The study also notes changes in rhizosphere microbial communities, indicating both stimulatory and inhibitory effects on beneficial microbes. This study investigated the bioenergy potential of Chlorella pyrenoidosa (CP) for use as fuel and carbon material through chemical and thermal characterization. The thermo-kinetic characteristics of Chlorella pyrenoidosa were assessed using isoconversional, linear regression, and non-linear regression approaches. The physicochemical analysis revealed high carbon (53.1 %), volatile (69.35 %), and low moisture (2.19 %), ash content (3.42 %). The results indicated that the non-linear model fitting method was the most accurate with the approximated activation energy (E α ) and pre-exponential Arrhenius constant (Ln A) were 124.92 ± 2.74 kJ/mol and 23.38 ± 4.63 min -1 , respectively. Additionally, the inclusion of sodium bicarbonate resulted in a significant increase in BET surface area. FTIR analysis revealed several functional groups beneficial for carbon material, while XRD analysis showed a broad peak correlated with an amorphous structure. Solid-liquid extraction was investigated to obtain selected major plant nutrients (P, K, Ca, Mg) from biofuel ash using weak organic acids like salicylic acid, citric acid, and oxalic acid as sacrificial leaching agents. In this study, three organic acids were compared to determine the most effective leaching agent for maximizing the P, K, Ca, and Mg extraction from biofuel ash. The findings indicated that 0.1 M citric acid was the most efficient for plant nutrient recovery, with 81.9% of P recovered after 30 min, 82.4% of Ca, 76.8% of Mg, and 47.3% of K. after 120 min. The highest amount of K, with 59.3% was recovered after 180 min of extraction with 0.1 M oxalic acid. However, recovery of P-80.7% was lower, and much lower recovery of Ca-2.3%, and Mg-68.6% after 180 min of extraction with 0.1 M oxalic acid. The leachates were not contaminated with heavy metals, just 0.47 mg/L of Zn, 7.67 mg/L of Al, and 1.99 mg/L of Fe were detected after 180 min of extraction with 0.1 M oxalic acid. The formation of calcium oxalates after extraction with 0.1 M oxalic acid was seen by SEM-EDS. The present work deals with the biotechnological valorization of the vinasse through a sustainable biorefinery. The aim was to design and analyze, through process simulation, a biorefinery for the valorization of vinasse in products such as organo-mineral fertilizers, supplements for animal feed, and biogas. For this purpose, the SuperPro Designer software was used, and a modified hierarchical decomposition method was applied. One base case and three scenarios were techno-economically assessed, and the net present value was used as a selection criterion. The technological configuration with the best techno-economic criterion was analyzed socially and environmentally. The results suggest that the best configuration of the biorefinery corresponded to scenario 3, with a net present value of USD$73,364,000, a number of direct employees of 38, and a blue water footprint of 16.16 m 3 /h. Because of the naturally limited anaerobic degradability and limited biogas yield of raw sludge (RS), this study aims to increase the biogas production of primary sludge (PS) and waste activated sludge (WAS) by the integration of thermal alkaline process (TAP). PH 11 is confirmed to be the most suitable pH value for the TAP of both sludges. Moreover, with the pretreatment at pH 11 and 160 °C (6 bar) for 30 min, the investigated PSs and WASs achieved an increased biogas production of up to 81 % and 72 %, respectively. The improved net electricity production of WASs after TAP varied between 15-43 % compared to conventional WAS digestion. Ultrasound technology has emerged as a promising tool for enhancing enzymatic biodiesel production, yet the cavitation effect induced can compromise enzyme stability. This study explored the efficiency of polyols in enhancing lipase stability under ultrasound conditions to further improve biodiesel yield. The incorporation of sorbitol resulted in the highest fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) content in the ultrasound-assisted biodiesel production catalyzed by Eversa® Transform 2.0 among the investigated polyols. Furthermore, sorbitol enhanced the stability of the lipase, allowing it to tolerate up to 100 % ultrasound amplitude, compared to 60 % amplitude in its absence. Enzyme activity assays revealed that sorbitol preserved 99 % of the lipase activity, in contrast to 84 % retention observed without sorbitol under an 80 % ultrasound amplitude. Circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence spectroscopy analyses confirmed that sorbitol enhanced lipase rigidity and preserved its conformational structure under ultrasound exposure. Furthermore, employing a stepwise methanol addition strategy in ultrasound-assisted reactions with sorbitol achieved an 81.2 wt% FAME content in 8 h with only 0.2 wt% enzyme concentration. Bioenergy generation from microalgae can significantly contribute to climate mitigation and renewable energy production. In this regard, several multi-criteria decision-making method were employed to prioritize appropriate microalgae culture system for bioenergy production. Entropy weight, Criteria Importance Through Intercriteria Correlation (CRITIC) and Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) were the employed MCDA method. Fourteen microalgae culture systems were selected as a case study, which contain teen monoculture and four dual-culture. Initially, through ans in-depth review of the literature and expert views, four categories total eight indicators were selected as the evaluation indices of the study, namely 1) Proliferation: Half growth cycle and Max growth rate,2) Biomass output: Bio-crude yield and Lipid yield, 3) Nutrient utilization: residual concentration of total Nitrogen and total Phosphorus, and, 4) Stability: coefficient of variation of Bio-crude yield and Lipid yield. The result indicated that "Pediastrum sp. & Micractinium sp." was identified as the most bioenergy potential microalgae culture system, and the evaluation results of entropy weight method and CRITIC method are similar. It is pertinent to note that 1)the entropy weight method exhibits lower sample size requirements, 2) the critic method excels when dealing with larger sample sizes, and 3) the TOPSIS method necessitates the incorporation of appropriate weighting methods to ensure credible results. With the drastic growth of the economic and population, the global energy requirement is on the rise, and massive human and material resources have been put into the development of alternative and renewable energy sources. Biodiesel has been recognized as a green and sustainable alternative energy, but the raw materials-associated source and cost makes it difficult to achieve large-scale commercial production. Microbial lipids (ML) produced by oleaginous microbes have attracted more and more topics as feedstocks for biodiesel production because of their unique advantages (fast growth cycle, small footprint and so on). However, there are still many problems and challenges ahead towards commercialization of ML-based biodiesel, especially the cost of feedstock for ML production. Food waste (FW) rich in organic matters and nutrients is an excellent and almost zero-cost feedstock for ML production. However, current biological routes of FW-based ML production have some defects, which make it impossible to achieve full industrialization at present. Therefore, this review intends to provide a critical and comprehensive analysis of current biological routes of FW-based ML production with the focus on the challenges and solutions forward. The biological routes towards future FW-based ML production must be able to concurrently achieve economic feasibility and environmental sustainability. On this condition, an innovative integrated biological route for FW-based ML production has thus been put forward, which is also elucidated on its economic and environmental sustainability. High-risk antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and their accompanying antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) seriously threaten public health. As a crucial medium for ARB and ARGs spread, soils with biogas slurry have been widely investigated. However, few studies focused on high-risk multi-drug resistant bacteria (MDRB) and their associated ARGs. This study examined ARB distribution in different agricultural soils with biogas slurry across 12 districts in China. It identified high-risk MDRB in various soil backgrounds, elucidating their resistance and spread mechanism. The findings revealed that diverse cultured ARB were enriched in soils with biogas slurry, especially soil ciprofloxacin ARB, which were enriched (>2.5 times) in 68.4 % of sampling sites. Four high-risk MDRB isolated from Hebei, Zhejiang, Shanxi, and Gansu districts were identified as severe or opportunistic pathogens, which carried abundant mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and 14 known high risk ARGs, including aac(3)-IId, aac(6')-Ib3, aph(6)-Id, aac(6')-Ib3, aadA1, blaOXA-10, blaTEM-1B, dfrA12, dfrA14, cmlA1, sul1, floR, tet(M) and tet(L). The antibiotics accumulation, diverse ARGs and MGEs enrichment, and proliferation of pathogenic bacteria could be potential driving factors of their occurrence and spread. Biogas production is seen as one of the key measures in circular economy providing several benefits for the environment. In practice, however, these benefits may not be achieved if the production is not implemented and managed in ways that reduce gaseous emissions. Thus, this study aimed at highlighting how different management practices impact the climate during the life cycle of biogas production in comparison to management without biogas production (reference). Advanced, more emission-reducing practices resulted in 97-107% and conventional practices in 57-75% less emissions when biogas was utilized as transport fuel. If biogas was utilized in CHP (combined heat and power production), the emission reductions were 67-74% and 13-30%, respectively. This reflects the fact that inefficient practices can lead to minimal emission reduction without achieving the desired climate benefit in comparison to the reference. On the European level, this may also mean that the emission reduction demands of RED II (Renewable Energy Directive) regulation are not met. Anaerobic digestion for flexible biogas production can lead to digestion inhibition under high shock loads. While steel slag addition has shown promise in enhancing system buffering, its limitations necessitate innovation. This study synthesized the nitrogen-doped activated carbon composite from steel slag to mitigate intermediate product accumulation during flexible biogas production. Material characterization preceded experiments introducing the composite into anaerobic digestion systems, evaluating its impact on methane production efficiency under hydraulic and concentration sudden shocks. Mechanistic insights were derived from microbial community and metagenomic analyses, facilitating the construction of the modified Anaerobic Digestion Model No. 1 (ADM1) to quantitatively assess the material's effects. Results indicate superior resistance to concentration shocks with substantial increment of methane production rate up to 33.45% compared with control group, which is mediated by direct interspecies electron transfer, though diminishing with increasing shock intensity. Oleaginous forests provide diverse ecosystem services, including timber, seed yield (a vital feedstock for biodiesel production), and substantial carbon savings. These carbon savings encompass carbon sequestration related to timber growth and carbon savings resulting from substituting fossil fuel with biodiesel. However, oleaginous forests are vulnerable to seed wasp attacks (disservice), which significantly threaten both seed yield and carbon savings. Using an integrated ecological-economic model that includes Faustmann's Land Expectation Value model and a pest damage control model, we aim to understand the intricate relationship among multiple ecosystem services and disservices of oleaginous forests. The results reveal four distinct phases contingent on varying pesticide application rates: the pesticide under-use phase, substitution phase, complementary phase, and over-use phase. Notably, a potential avenue to minimize pest damage is identified during the complementary phase by reducing the optimal rotation age at the expense of decreased carbon sequestration and bioenergy provision, posing a challenge to climate change mitigation. Nowadays, the utilization of biogas for energy generation is hindered by the declining production costs of solar and wind power. A shift towards the valorization of biogas into ectoine, a highly valuable bioproduct priced at 1000 €⸱kg -1 , offers a novel approach to fostering a more competitive biogas market while contributing to carbon neutrality. This study evaluated the optimization of CH 4 gas-liquid mass transfer in 10 L bubble column bioreactors for CH 4 conversion into ectoine and hydroxyectoine using a mixed methanotrophic culture. The influence of the empty bed residence time (EBRTs of 27, 54, and 104 min) at different membrane diffuser pore sizes (0.3 and 0.6 mm) was investigated. Despite achieving CH 4 elimination capacities (CH 4 -ECs) of 10-12 g⸱m -3 ⸱h -1 , an EBRT of 104 min mediated CH 4 limitation within the cultivation broth, resulting in a negligible biomass growth. Reducing the EBRT to 54 min entailed CH 4 -ECs of 21-24 g⸱m -3 ⸱h -1 , concomitant to a significant increase in biomass growth (up to 0.17 g⸱L⸱d -1 ) and reaching maximum ectoine and hydroxyectoine accumulation of 79 and 13 mg⸱gVSS -1 , respectively. Conversely, process operation at an EBRT of 27 min lead to microbial inhibition, resulting in a reduced biomass growth of 0.09 g⸱L⸱d -1 and an ectoine content of 47 mg⸱gVSS -1 . Treating hazardous landfill leachate poses significant environmental challenges due to its complex nature. In this study, we propose a novel approach for enhancing the anaerobic digestion of landfill leachate using silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) conjugated with eco-friendly green silica nanoparticles (Si NPs). The synthesized Si NPs and Ag@Si NPs were characterized using various analytical techniques, including transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The anaerobic digestion performance of Si NPs and Ag@Si NPs was tested by treating landfill leachate samples with 50 mg/L of each NP. The results demonstrated an enhancement in the biogas production rate compared to the control phase without the nanocomposite, as the biogas production increased by 14% and 37% using Si NPs and Ag@Si NPs. Ag@Si NPs effectively promoted the degradation of organic pollutants in the leachate, regarding chemical oxygen demand (COD) and volatile solids (VS) by 58% and 65%. Furthermore, microbial analysis revealed that Ag@Si NPs enhanced the activity of microbial species responsible for the methanogenic process. Phosphotungstic acid (HPW) and silicotungstic acid (HSiW) were tested as homogeneous and as heterogeneous catalysts (after immobilized on different supports as high surface area graphite -HSAG500-, montmorillonite -MMT- and alumina -Al 2 O 3 -) for the in situ transesterification of sewage sludge lipids. Both catalysts exhibited similar performance in homogeneous phase, with slightly higher biodiesel yield for HPW. When the different supports were tested with HPW, the maximum yield obtained follow the trend: MMT > HSAG500 > Al 2 O 3 , but a greater leaching of the heteropolyacid (HPA) was observed with MMT. Therefore, HSAG500 showed the best results with a good FAMEs profile. The percentage of active phase was optimized from 1 to 40%, reaching the optimum at 10%. A more heterogeneous surface is obtained with larger quantities, also favouring the HPA leaching. The reaction temperature and the use of sonication as pre-treatment were also optimized. The best results were obtained after sonication with HPW-HSAG500 (10%) as catalyst, catalyst/sludge ratio 1:2, MeOH/sludge ratio 33:1, 120 °C and 21 h of reaction time with a maximum biodiesel yield of 31.1 % (FAMEs/lipids). Bio-oil derived from biomass fast pyrolysis can be upgraded to gasoline and diesel alternatives by catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). Here, the novel nitrogen-doped carbon-alumina hybrid supported cobalt (Co/NCA n , n = 1, 2.5, 5) catalyst is established by a coagulation bath technique. The optimized Co/NCA 2.5 catalyst presented 100 % conversion of guaiacol, high selectivity to cyclohexane (93.6 %), and extremely high deoxygenation degree (97.3 %), respectively. Therein, the formation of cyclohexanol was facilitated by stronger binding energy and greater charge transfer between Co and NC which was unraveled by density functional theory calculations. In addition, the appropriate amount of Lewis acid sites enhanced the cleavage of the C-O bond in cyclohexanol, finally resulting in a remarkable selectivity for cyclohexane. Finally, the Co/NCA 2.5 catalyst also exhibited excellent selectivity (93.1 %) for high heating value hydrocarbon fuel in crude bio-oil HDO. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of hydrothermal pretreatment on the solubilization and anaerobic digestion (AD) of Scenedesmus sp. biomass. At first, the microalgae was cultivated in 5% fresh leachate (FL) to recover nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. Scenedesmus sp. grown in 5% FL obtained 100%, 77% and 97% removal efficiency of ammonium nitrogen (NH 4 + - N), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and phosphate phosphorous (PO 4 3- -P), respectively. In the following step, the hydrothermal pretreatment of Scenedesmus sp. biomass was carried out at 120, 150 and 170 °C and retention time of 0, 30 and 60 min to evaluate its solubilization and biogas production through AD in batch test. Soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) increased by 260% compared to untreated microalgae at 170 °C for 60 min. In comparison to untreated microalgae, the highest increase in biogas (70%) and methane yield (100%) was observed for 150 °C and 60 min pretreated microalgae as a consequence of hydrothermal pretreatment. Hydrothermal pretreatment has shown effectiveness in enhancing biomass solubilization and increasing biogas yield. Microalgae are considered sustainable resources for the production of biofuel, feed, and bioactive compounds. Among various microalgal genera, the Tetraselmis genus, containing predominantly marine microalgal species with wide tolerance to salinity and temperature, has a high potential for large-scale commercialization. Until now, Tetraselmis sp. are exploited at smaller levels for aquaculture hatcheries and bivalve production. However, its prolific growth rate leads to promising areal productivity and energy-dense biomass, so it is considered a viable source of third-generation biofuel. Also, microbial pathogens and contaminants are not generally associated with Tetraselmis sp. in outdoor conditions due to faster growth as well as dominance in the culture. Numerous studies revealed that the metabolite compositions of Tetraselmis could be altered favorably by changing the growth conditions, taking advantage of its acclimatization or adaptation ability in different conditions. Furthermore, the biorefinery approach produces multiple fractions that can be successfully upgraded into various value-added products along with biofuel. Overall, Tetraselmis sp. could be considered a potential strain for further algal biorefinery development under the circular bioeconomy framework. In this aspect, this review discusses the recent advancements in the cultivation and harvesting of Tetraselmis sp. for wider application in different sectors. Biological H 2 -assisted biogas upgrading has gained significant attention as an environmentally friendly substitute to common physico-chemical upgrading techniques, but is largely limited by the low solubility of H 2 . This study evaluated the design of a ceramic membrane contactor module for H 2 injection. H 2 dissolution was maintained at high efficiency by controlling gas supply and sludge recirculation rate, achieving a biogas quality of average 98.8% CH 4 during the stable operation phase with a 108% increase in the CH 4 production rate. This also outperforms conventional H 2 injection using diffuser sparging which could only achieve a biogas quality of 84% CH 4 content. Microbial community analysis found high Methanobacterium spp. abundance within the archaea at 95.2% at the end of the operation, allowing the dominance of the hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis pathway for high upgrading efficiencies. Biodiesel production from microalgae presents an innovative solution for renewable energy. This study investigates biodiesel production using Tetradesmus obliquus ON506010.1 by optimizing substrates, selenium and gibberellic acid. Using 15 µg/L selenium, lipid content and biomass productivity reached 35.45 %±0.92 and 0.178 g/L/day ± 0.051. With 50 µM gibberellic acid, biomass productivity and lipid content peaked at 0.785 ± 0.101 g/L/day and 38.95 %±0.35, surpassing the control. Fatty acid composition, biodiesel properties, and mRNA expression of lipid synthesis enzymes (acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACC) and fatty acid desaturase (FAD)) correlated. Combining 10 µg/L selenium with 75 µM gibberellic acid with response surface methodology (RSM) increased lipid content (42.80 % ±0.11) and biomass productivity (0.964 g/L/day ± 0.128). ACC and FAD upregulation validated this enhancement, with a 4.4-fold increase in FAD expression. Background: Biodiesel, a renewable diesel fuel that can be created from almost any natural fat or oil, is promoted as a greener and healthier alternative to commercial mineral diesel without the supporting experimental data to back these claims. The aim of this research was to assess the health effects of acute exposure to two types of biodiesel exhaust, or mineral diesel exhaust or air as a control in mice. Male BALB/c mice were exposed for 2-hrs to diluted exhaust obtained from a diesel engine running on mineral diesel, Tallow biodiesel or Canola biodiesel. A room air exposure group was used as a control. Twenty-four hours after exposure, a variety of respiratory related end point measurements were assessed, including lung function, responsiveness to methacholine and airway and systemic immune responses., Results: Tallow biodiesel exhaust exposure resulted in the greatest number of significant effects compared to Air controls, including increased airway hyperresponsiveness (178.1 ± 31.3% increase from saline for Tallow biodiesel exhaust exposed mice compared to 155.8 ± 19.1 for Air control), increased airway inflammation (63463 ± 13497 cells/mL in the bronchoalveolar lavage of Tallow biodiesel exhaust exposed mice compared to 40561 ± 11800 for Air exposed controls) and indications of immune dysregulation. In contrast, exposure to Canola biodiesel exhaust resulted in fewer significant effects compared to Air controls with a slight increase in airway resistance at functional residual capacity and indications of immune dysregulation. Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions in High Rate Algal Ponds (HRAP) can negatively affect the sustainability of algal-bacterial processes. N 2 O emissions from a pilot HRAP devoted to biogas upgrading and digestate treatment were herein monitored for 73 days. The influence of the pH (7.5, 8.5, and 9.5), nitrogen sources (100 mg L -1 of N-NO 2 - , N-NO 3 - , and N-NH 4 + ) and illumination on N 2 O emissions from the algal-bacterial biomass of the HRAP was also assessed in batch tests. Significantly higher N 2 O gas concentrations of 311.8 ± 101.1 ppm v were recorded in the dark compared to the illuminated period (236.9 ± 82.6 ppm v ) in the HRAP. The batch tests revealed that the highest N 2 O emission rates (49.4 mmol g -1 TSS·h -1 ) occurred at pH 8.5 in the presence of 100 mg N-NO 2 - /L under dark conditions. This study represents the first investigation of bio-succinic acid (bio-SA) production with methane enrichment using carbon-dioxide-fixating bacteria in the co-culture of ragi tapai and macroalgae, Chaetomorpha. Microwave irradiation has also been introduced to enhance the biochemical processes as it could provide rapid and selective heating of substrates. In this research, microwave irradiation was applied on ragi tapai as a pre-treatment process. Factors such as microwave irradiation dose on ragi tapai, Chaetomorpha ratio in the co-culture, and pH value were studied. Optimal conditions were identified using Design-Expert software, resulting in optimal experimental biomethane and bio-SA production of 85.7 % and 0.65 g/L, respectively, at a microwave dose of 1.45 W/g, Chaetomorpha ratio of 0.9 and pH value of 7.8. Although the promotive effect of direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) on methane production has been well-documented, the practical applicability of DIET in different scenarios have not yet been systematically studied. This study compared the effects of magnetite-mediated DIET with conventional biogas mixing-driven interspecies hydrogen transfer (IHT) on anaerobic digestion (AD) of swine manure (SM). Compared with control, magnetite supplementation, biogas circulation, and their integration enhanced the CH 4 yield by 19.3%, 25.9%, and 26.2%, respectively. Magnetite mainly enriched DIET-related syntrophic bacteria (Anaerolineae and Synergistia) and methanogens (Methanosarcina) to accelerate acidification and establish DIET, while biogas circulation mainly enriched hydrolytic bacteria (Clostridia) and hydrogenotrophic methanogens (Methanolinea and Methanobacterium) to promote hydrolysis and accelerate IHT. Coupling magnetite addition with biogas circulation led to the enrichment of the above six microorganisms to different extents. The effectiveness of the strategies for lowering the H 2 pressure followed: magnetite + biogas circulation ≈ biogas circulation > magnetite. Under stress-free environment, the enhancement effect of magnetite-induced DIET was not even as pronounced as biogas circulation-a simple and common mixing strategy in commercial AD plants, and the promotion effect of magnetite was insignificant in the well-mixed digesters. Catalysts are usually employed in hydrothermal processes for different purposes, such as enhancing quality and yield of produced biofuels. However, assessing catalyst performances can be time consuming and expensive. For this reason, in this work, a technique based on high pressure differential scanning calorimetry was applied to study heterogeneous catalyst behavior under hydrothermal conditions at the micro-scale. Heterogeneous catalysts were mixed with distilled water and cellulose, selected as substrate, and tested at 250 °C. The heat release profiles obtained were deconvoluted in three Gaussian peaks, each associated with a set of reactions. Siralox and iron chloride showed the highest catalytic activities impacting the development and the enthalpy of the reactions. Selected samples were further characterized to investigate synergies among acid and basic sites and emphasize the importance of the spatial distribution of the components inside the catalysts. Gradient anaerobic digestion reactor (GADR) can improve substrate utilization efficiency by solving the problem of the "short circuit" of materials. However, the substrate's composition significantly affects the reactor's performance. This study investigated the impact of food waste (FW) levels on corn straw's dry anaerobic digestion (AD) in a novel GADR. The results show that biomethane production can be improved by coupling urban and agricultural solid waste recycling. The mechanism is to increase the hydrolysis and acid production efficiency, and the abundance of enzymes related to methanogenesis. The maximum methane yield (494.2 mL CH 4 /g VS) and the highest anaerobic biodegradability (85.7 %) were obtained when the FW was added at 60 %.
