This paper is aimed at examining Lord Byron's popularity among one of the modernist poets, W. H. Auden. For all of the comparisons that can be drawn between Lord Byron and W. H. Auden, there is little in criticism that interprets their connection in travel writing. Drawing on Don Juan and Auden's two travel books as the texts, the author of the paper finds that despite the differences in social and cultural context, both of them are endowed with literary experiments, fresh new perspectives and spiritual exploration granted by travel. Travel shapes their poetics as well as politics. Through travel and writing, they challenge the norm and tradition, and yet Auden exhibits creativity in dealing with travel in the modernist period. In surveying the intertextuality of their travel writing, the author of the paper gains a sense of both their originality and traditionary indebtedness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores the Armenian translation of Lord Byron's the Prisoner of Chillon by All-Armenian Poet Hovhannes Toumanian with Russian serving as an intermediary language. This research is captivating and rather responsible insomuch as it deals with the literary creations of three most eminent poets of the 19th century - Lord Byron, Vasily Zhukovsky and Hovhannes Toumanian. It is fascinating how poetry has united those three literary figures from culturally different geographical locations and how translation has disunited them. It comes as no surprise that Byron's fine lyricism could be properly understood and passed on to target readers with such delicacy, nuance, and finesse only by Zhukovsky and Toumanian. The fact that Zhukovsky translated Byron is quite logical since the 19th century Russian literature was greatly influenced by Western literature, especially by Lord Byron. Yet, how come that a poet born and raised in a far-off mountainous region of Armenia with little to no knowledge of English decided to translate one of the masterpieces of a genius poet of "Foggy Albion"? There is one answer: the power of poetry...the power of translation! It is Zhukovsky's translation that inspired Toumanian to take on the challenging and responsible task of translating the Prisoner of Chillon. It should be underlined that the cultural differences could not but be reflected in the Russian and Armenian translated versions. The primary purpose of my research is to shed light on some of the transformations Byron's poem has undergone in the two -level translation process with a focus on elements of 'Armenianness' discernable in Toumanian's translation. English Romantic poets make it clear that Romanticism does not deal only with nature, the self's affective dimension, and the imagination; rather, the literature also reflects a great interest in politics. Generally, Romantic poets are rebellious. They revolt against the social and moral edicts of their societies, in addition to norms, customs, and habits. Both Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley are among those British Romantics who dwell on not only nature and its beauty, as well as the sublime, but also the political issues of their time. Through their poetry, they demonstrate that liberty, politics, and revolutions are deeply embedded in their works. This study seeks to highlight some of the key ideas of Lord Byron's poem Childe Harold's Pilgrimage and Shelley's poem Prometheus Unbound, focusing on how the two poets employ their poetry to reflect their views on politics and criticize oppressive and authoritarian systems. The approach that this article makes use of is New Historicism because it relates the meaning in the poems to the historical and political context in which they were written. In this regard, this article argues that Byron and Shelley are at once rebellious and reformist. They speak, both explicitly and implicitly, against tyranny and advocate love and peace, as well as nonviolent resistance. They also emphasize the importance of confronting tyranny and having courageous individuals who are willing to stand against injustice. Additionally, the study suggests how political Romantic literature can contribute to increasing contemporary readers' awareness of Romanticism's political discourse and its relevance today.
