Counterfeiting has caused great concern all over the world. What's more, the fluorescent materials play an important role in technological research and development for high-security. In this work, lead-metal-organic framework (Pb-MOF) and perovskite (MAPbBr 3 ) were used in papers to achieving fluorescence counterfeiting. Pb-MOF, as the template or precursor of MAPbBr 3 , were in-situ generated on the surface of cellulose fibers (CFs) to preparing into hand sheets (Pb-MOF@CFs). Through the analysis of experimental results, it was found that ligands, reaction systems, addition sequences of drugs, time, etc. would affect the deposition of Pb-MOF on the surface of CFs. Using CH 3 NH 3 Br (MABr) as the anti-counterfeiting ink to write on Pb-MOF@CFs, the orange writing leaped across the paper, which caused by Pb in Pb-MOF chemically reacting with MABr forming MAPbBr 3 . The orange writing displayed green fluorescence under 365 nm ultraviolet lamp excitation. The orange writing with green fluorescence could be extinguished and reconstructed, which had promise for reuse. In addition, fluorescent security papers (MAPbBr 3 @Pb-MOFs@CFs) were prepared by immersing Pb-MOF@CFs in MABr solution. The fluorescence of MAPbBr 3 @Pb-MOFs@CFs opened when the surface of it was scraped under 365 nm ultraviolet lamp. This unique fluorescence property was very important in improving the security of products. Paper sludge biomass represents an underutilized feedstock rich in pulped and processed cellulose which is currently a waste stream with significant disposal cost to industry for landfilling services. Effective fractionation of the cellulose from paper sludge presents an opportunity to yield cellulose as feedstock for value-added processes. A novel approach to cellulose fractionation is the sidehill screening system, herein studied at the pilot-plant scale. Composition analysis determined ash removal and carbohydrate retention of both sidehill and high-performance benchtop screening systems. Sidehill screening resulted in greater carbohydrates retention relative to benchtop screening (90% vs 66%) and similar ash removal (95% vs 98%). Techno-economic analysis for production of sugar syrup yielded a minimum selling price of $331/metric ton of sugar syrup including disposal savings, significantly less than a commercial sugar syrup without fractionation. The demand for paper-based packaging materials as an alternative to incumbent disposable petroleum-derived polymers for food packaging applications is ever-growing. However, typical paper-based formats are not suitable for use in unconventional applications due to inherent limitations (e.g., excessive hydrophilicity, lack antimicrobial ability), and accordingly, enabling new capabilities is necessity. Herein, a simple and environmentally friendly strategy was proposed to introduce antimicrobial and hydrophobic functions to cellulose paper through successive chemical grafting of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) and cinnamaldehyde (CA). The results revealed that cellulose paper not only showed long-term antibacterial effect on different bacteria, but also inhibited a wide range of fungi. Encouragingly, the modified paper, which is fluorine-free, displays a high contact angle of 119.7°. Thus, even in the wet state, the modified paper can still maintain good mechanical strength. Meanwhile, the multifunctional composite papers have excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. Compared with ordinary cellulose paper, multifunctional composite paper can effectively prolong the shelf life of strawberries. Sustainable strategies to improve the water resistance of cellulose paper are actively sought. In this work, polymeric microspheres (PMs), prepared through emulsion polymerization of cellulose nanofibers stabilized rubber seed oil-derived monomer, were investigated as coatings on corrugated medium paper (CMP). After infiltrating porous paper with PMs, the water-resistant corrugated papers (WRCP n ) with enhanced mechanical properties were obtained. When 30 wt% PMs were introduced, WRCP 30 turned out to be highly compacted with an increased water contact angle of 106.3° and a low water vapor transmission rate of 81 g/(m 2 d) at 23 °C. Meanwhile, the tensile strength of WRCP 30 increased to 22.2 MPa, a 4-fold increase from CMP. When tested in a well-hydrated state, 71% of its mechanical strength in the dry state was maintained. Even with a low content of 10 wt% PMs, WRCP 10 also exhibited stable tensile strength and water wettability during the cyclic soaking-drying process. This article describes the synthesis of sorptive phases for bioanalysis based on the modification of cellulose paper with natural beeswax as sorbent, resulting in a substrate completely renewable and sustainable. The preparation of the sorptive phases consisted of the dissolution of beeswax in hexane, followed by its drop-casting on cellulose paper and subsequent evaporation of the solvent. The beeswax modification of paper renders it hydrophobic, enabling the extraction of the target analytes, i.e., imipramine, desipramine, amitriptyline and trimipramine, via hydrophobic interactions. The main variables affecting the extraction performance were investigated (e.g., pH, ionic strength, extraction time, eluent composition, agitation speed). The analytical workflow combines a straightforward sampling, simultaneous extraction of 30 samples in 1 h, and the rapid (<2 min) determination of the analytes via direct infusion mass spectrometry. The method provided limits of detection in the range 2.0 and 3.2 μg L -1 , and the precision, expressed as relative standard deviation, was better than 5.4 % and 8.5 % for intra and inter-day analyses, respectively. Ageing of paper is a complex process of great relevance for application purposes because of its widespread use as support for information storage in books and documents, and as common low-cost and green packaging material, to name a few. A key factor in paper ageing is the oxidation of cellulose, a macromolecule of natural origin that constitutes the main chemical component of paper. Such a complex process results in changes in the cellulose polymeric chains in chemical and structural properties. The scope of this work is to explore the effects of oxidation of cellulose as one of the principal mechanisms of ageing of paper using a fluorescence-based approach. To this aim, fluorescence-lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) measurements on pure cellulose samples stained using Carbotrace 680 dye were performed, and data were analyzed by phasor approach. The comparison with results from conventional techniques allowed to map paper microstructure as a function of the sample oxidation degree correlating the fluorescence-lifetime changes to cellulose oxidation. Replacing nonbiodegradable plastics with environmentally friendly cellulose materials has emerged as a key trend in environmental protection. This study highlights the development of a strong and hydrophobic micro-nano fibrillated cellulose paper (MNP) through the incorporation of micro-nano fibrillated cellulose fiber (MNF) and chitin nanocrystal (Ch), followed by the impregnation of polymethylsiloxane (PMHS). A low-acid, heat-assisted colloidal grinding strategy was employed to prepare MNF with a high aspect ratio effectively. Ch was incorporated as a reinforcing matrix into the cellulose fiber scaffold through straightforward mechanical mixing and mechanical hot-pressing treatments. Compared to pure MNP, the 5Ch-MNP exhibited a 25 % improvement in tensile strength, reaching 170 MPa, and showed enhanced barrier properties against oxygen and water vapor. The impregnation of PMHS rapidly confers environmentally resistant hydrophobic properties to 1 % PMHS-5Ch-MNP, leading to a water contact angle exceeding 112°, and a 290 % increase in tensile strength under wet conditions. Additionally, the paper demonstrated excellent antibacterial adhesion properties, with the adhesion rates for E. coli and S. aureus exceeding 98 %. Plastic has significant negative consequences for the environment and human health, demanding greener alternatives. Lignocellulose is a sustainable biomass material, and its paper has been considered as a potential material to replace plastics. Micro-nano lignocellulose, derived from natural plants, possesses a small size and abundant hydrogen bonding capacity. However, there is no clear explanation for the interactions between lignin and micro-nano cellulose, and little understanding of how the interaction can affect the papers' structure and optical properties. Electrostatic potential calculation is a reliable tool to explain non-covalent interactions, and can explore the binding between lignin and micro-nano cellulose. In this paper, kenaf - a non-wood fiber raw material - was employed to prepare micro-nano lignocellulose. The resulting slurry facilitated the production of transparent paper via a simple casting method. The prepared transparent micro-nano paper exhibited high transparency (~90 %), UVA resistance (~80 %), and hydrophobicity (~114°). Paper-based electrochemical sensors have the characteristics of flexibility, biocompatibility, environmental protection, low cost, wide availability, and hydropathy, which make them very suitable for the development and application of biological detection. This work proposes electrospun cellulose acetate nanofiber (CA NF)-decorated paper-based screen-printed (PBSP) electrode electrochemical sensors. The CA NFs were directly collected on the PBSP electrode through an electrospinning technique at an optimized voltage of 16 kV for 10 min. The sensor was functionalized with different bio-sensitive materials for detecting different targets, and its sensing capability was evaluated by CV, DPV, and chronoamperometry methods. The test results demonstrated that the CA NFs enhanced the detection sensitivity of the PBSP electrode, and the sensor showed good stability, repeatability, and specificity ( p < 0.01, N = 3). The electrochemical sensing of the CA NF-decorated PBSP electrode exhibited a short detection duration of ∼5-7 min and detection ranges of 1 nmol mL -1 -100 μmol mL -1 , 100 fg mL -1 -10 μg mL -1 , and 1.5 × 10 2 -10 6 CFU mL -1 and limits of detection of 0.71 nmol mL -1 , 89.1 fg mL -1 , and 30 CFU mL -1 for glucose, Ag85B protein, and E. coli O157:H7 , respectively. These CA NF-decorated PBSP sensors can be used as a general electrochemical tool to detect, for example, organic substances, proteins, and bacteria, which are expected to achieve point-of-care testing of pathogenic microorganisms and have wide application prospects in biomedicine, clinical diagnosis, environmental monitoring, and food safety.

Cellulosic paper-based electrode materials have attracted increasing attention in the field of flexible supercapacitor. As a conductive polymer, polyaniline exhibits high theoretical pseudocapacitive capacitance and has been applied in paper-based electrode materials along with cellulose fibers. However, the stacking of polyaniline usually leads to poor performance of electrodes. In this study, metal-organic coordination polymers of zirconium-alizarin red S and zirconium-phytic acid are applied to modulate the polyaniline layer to obtain high-performance cellulosic paper-based electrode materials. Zirconium hydroxide is firstly loaded on cellulose fibers while alizarin red S and phytic acid are introduced to regulate the morphology of polyaniline through doping and coordination processes. The results show that the introduction of dual coordination polymers is effective to regulate the morphology of polyaniline on cellulose fibers. The performances of the paper-based electrode materials, including electrical conductivity and electrochemistry, are apparently improved. Along with the developing of flexible electronics, there is a strong interest in high performance flexible energy storage materials. As natural carbohydrate polymer, cellulose fibers have potential applications in the area due to their biodegradability and flexibility. However, their conductive and electrochemical properties are impossible to meet the demands of practical applications. In this study, cellulose fibers were combined with polyaniline to develop novel paper-based supercapacitor electrode material. Cellulose fibers were firstly coordinated to Cu(II) and subsequently involved in polymerization of polyaniline. Not only the mass loading of polyaniline was significantly increased, but also an impressive area specific capacitance (2767 mF/cm 2 at 1 mA/cm 2 ) was achieved. Paper-based cultural relics experience irreversible aging and deterioration during long-term preservation. The most common process of paper degradation is the acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of cellulose. Nowadays, deacidification has been considered as a practical way to protect acidified literature; however, two important criteria of minimal intervention and reversibility should be considered. Inspired by the superior properties of bacterial cellulose (BC) and its structural similarity to paper, herein, the mineralized BC membranes are applied to deacidification and conservation of paper-based materials for the first time. Based on the enzyme-induced mineralization process, the homogeneous and high-loaded calcifications of hydroxyapatite (HAP) and calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) nanoparticles onto the nanofibers of BC networks have been achieved, respectively. The size, morphology, structure of minerals, as well as the alkalinity and alkali reserve of BC membranes are well controlled by regulating enzyme concentration and mineralization time. Compared with HAP/CaCO 3 -immersed method, HAP/CaCO 3 -BC membranes show more efficient and sustained deacidification performance on paper. The weak alkalinity of mineralized BC membranes avoids the negative effect of alkali on paper, and the high alkali reserve implies a good sustained-release effect of alkali to neutralize the future generated acid. The multiscale nanochannels of the BC membrane provide ion exchange and acid/alkali neutralization channels between paper and the BC membrane, and the final pH of protected paper can be well stabilized in a certain range. Most importantly, this BC-deacidified method is reversible since the BC membrane can be removed without causing any damage to paper and the original structure and fiber morphology of paper are well preserved. In addition, the mineralized BC membrane provides excellent flame-retardant performance on paper thanks to its unique organic-inorganic composite structure. All of these advantages of the mineralized BC membrane indicate its potential use as an effective protection material for the reversible deacidification and preventive conservation of paper-based cultural relics.

Traditional paper-based packaging commonly needs to be coated to achieve sufficient mechanical and barrier performances. In this research, a bio-based coating for paper was developed from carbamate starch (Sc), calcium lignosulfonate (CL), and cellulose nanofibrils (CNF). Controlling the electrostatic and hydrogen-bonding interactions among the components of the coating was conducive to tailoring the structure and performance of the coated paper. When the degree of substitution (Ds) of Sc was 0.10, the amount of CL was 1.00 g, and the amount of CNF was 0.65 % of the weight of Sc, the paper coated with the resulting 0.10Sc-1.00CL-0.65CNF coating exhibited increased hydrophobicity and excellent mechanical, air-barrier, and UV-light-barrier properties. After the addition of 0.10 % of silver nano-particles (AgNPs) to the 0.10Sc-1.00CL-0.65CNF coating, the paper coated with the resulting 0.10Sc-1.00CL-0.65CNF-0.10AgNPs coating exhibited good antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The coated paper was used as the packaging for cherry tomatoes stored under ambient conditions. Due to the synergistic preservation effects of the Sc-CL-CNF coating and AgNPs, the shelf life of the cherry tomatoes was at least 7 days. Deacidification and strengthening play pivotal roles in the enduring conservation of aged paper. In this study, we innovatively propose the use of reduced cellulose nanofibrils (rCNFs) and aminopropyltriethoxysilane modified CaCO 3 (APTES-CaCO 3 ) for preserving aged paper. The sodium borohydride-mediated reduction of cellulose nanofibrils diminished the carboxylate content and O/C mass ratio in rCNFs, which in turn amplified the swelling of rCNFs and their crosslinking potential with paper fibers. By introducing amino groups to the CaCO 3 surface, the dispersion property of APTES-CaCO 3 in organic solvent was enhanced, as well as the deacidification ability and the retention on the paper. The distinct structures and attributes of rCNFs and APTES-CaCO 3 were characterized by various techniques. Following the conservation application to aged paper using this system, a desired internal pH value of 8.31 and an alkaline reserve of 0.8056 mol/kg were achieved, alongside a 33.6 % elevation in the tensile index. The aging resistance of the treated paper was evaluated by dry heat and hygrothermal aging tests. The findings revealed that the treatment bestowed the treated paper with outstanding anti-aging properties, notably in terms of internal pH, alkaline reserve and mechanical robustness. A novel, biodegradable substrate based, and cost-effective flexible electrochemical sensor was developed for the highly selective and sensitive detection of one of the major neurotransmitters, dopamine, which can be utilised as a disposable electrode for point-of-care diagnostic applications. The active material CuSnB decorated over cellulose paper exhibits good sensitivities of 3.92 μA μM -1 cm -2 with a limit of detection of 0.5 nM. Moreover, the flexible sensor demonstrated superior selectivity towards co-existing metabolites such as ascorbic acid, glucose, and uric acid, in addition to stability at various mechanical deformations.

A large number of fresh fruits are wasted in the supply chain due to spoilage, so it is crucial to develop fruit preservation materials. Herein, two novel Ag-MOFs/carboxymethyl filter paper (Ag-MOFs/CMFP) composites were successfully synthesized by in situ facile synthesis, which can be used as packaging materials to delay fruit spoilage. The synthesis process is simple and environmentally friendly, and the reaction conditions are mild. The mechanical property, water stability, and antibacterial activity of the as-synthesized Ag-MOFs/CMFP composites were investigated. Specifically, the composites exhibited high mechanical performance and the tensile strength was >10.00 MPa. Moreover, the composites displayed good water stability and can remain stable in water environment for >7 days, which can be attributed to the strong interaction between Ag-MOFs and CMFP. Significantly, Ag-MOF particles endow the composite papers with excellent antibacterial activity, which can inactivate 99.9 % of the bacteria. Attributed to these characteristics, these composite papers were used as fruit fresh-keeping materials and can prolong the shelf-life of cherry tomatoes and peaches for >10 days. The lifespan of an electrical transformer, primarily determined by the condition of its solid insulation, is well known under various operating conditions when mineral oil is the coolant in these machines. However, there is a trend toward replacing this oil with biodegradable fluids, especially esters; therefore, an understanding of the ageing of solid insulation with these fluids is essential. Currently available data do not allow for the selection of the best ester among those available on the market, as each study applies different conditions, making it impossible to compare results. Thus, this paper analyses the degradation of Kraft and Thermally Upgraded Kraft papers with the following five most promising commercial esters: sunflower, rapeseed, soybean, palm, and synthetic. The materials underwent accelerated thermal ageing at 130, 150, and 170 °C, and the integrity of the papers was evaluated through their polymerisation degree and the obtaining of the degradation kinetic models. The wide range of materials studied in this work, which were subjected to the same treatments, allows for a comparison of the esters, revealing significant differences in the impact of the alternative fluids. Sunflower, rapeseed, and soybean esters provided the best paper protection, i.e., the degree of polymerisation of Kraft paper in the tests at 150 °C decreased by 71% with these fluids, compared to the 83% reduction with mineral oil, 79% reduction with palm ester, and 75% reduction with synthetic ester. Furthermore, different kinetic models were obtained to predict the degradation; it was concluded that the Emsley model provides the best fit. Additionally, it was found that the behaviour of a dielectric fluid with one type of paper cannot be extrapolated, which is only noticeable in broad-scope studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coffee pulp waste was having potential to be used as a source of non-wood cellulose for papermaking because of its abundance, considerable fraction of cellulose content, and low economic value. In this study, the isolated cellulosic fiber from coffee pulp waste was prepared into paper with the specific purpose of filter for coffee, with the aim as an effort to develop economic value and potential alternative utilization to reduce the environmental impact of coffee pulp waste accumulation, besides suggesting alternative non-wood cellulose source for coffee filter paper. The effect of extraction process repetition using 3 % (w/w) sodium hydroxide was studied to evaluate its effectiveness in removing the non-cellulosic content of coffee pulp, especially lignin, which could damage the taste of coffee. The physical and mechanical properties and water flow ability of coffee pulp filter paper (CPFP) were conducted to evaluate its characteristics and performance. The result showed that three times repetitions of alkali treatment to coffee pulp produced similar lignocellulosic content quality to the commercial wood-based coffee filter paper, with cellulose fraction reaching 86.67 % and residual lignin around 5.39 %. The coffee pulp-based filter paper made from three times repetition of alkali-treated coffee pulp has comparable tensile strength and excellent folding resistance compared to commercial filter paper, which reached around 526 ± 198.4 N/m and 1 df, respectively. The coffee pulp-based filter paper also demonstrated could withstand discharged through by boiling water without breaking. According to the resulting performance of CPFP, coffee pulp waste is promising to be further developed as an alternative non-wood resource for coffee filter paper manufacturing.

To develop special insulating paper is of great significance to promote the service life of transformers. Using molecular simulation to guide the development of special insulating paper can greatly reduce the trial-and-error rate and waste of resources in traditional experiments. The effect of different types of polysilsesquioxane (POSS) on cellulose insulating paper was investigated by using molecular simulation. This paper investigated the thermal stability and mechanical properties and electrical characteristics of caged POSS, semi-caged POSS, and ladder-like POSS doped cellulose insulating paper. The results show that POSS with all types can enhance the performance of cellulose insulating paper, and ladder-like POSS possess the best modification effect. The glass transition temperature was increased by 58 K, and the bulk modulus, shear modulus, and elastic modulus of cellulose insulating paper doped with ladder-like POSS can improve up to 27.07%, 45.67%, and 41.28%, respectively. Meanwhile, the dielectric properties of ladder-like POSS modified insulating paper are also significantly improved. The findings of this paper propose a method for the preparation of ladder-like POSS modified insulating paper, which provides theoretical guidance for the experimental preparation of special insulating paper. The mechanical properties for paper sheets composited with glucose (Glc), methyl cellulose (MC), and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) were investigated. The paper composites were prepared by immersing paper sheets in aqueous solutions of these materials and drying at 100 °C for 30 min. The stress–strain curves for these paper composites were measured by a uniaxial tensile apparatus with a stretching speed of 2 mm/min. The breaking stress and strain for untreated paper were 24 MPa and 0.016, respectively. The paper composites demonstrated stress–strain curves similar to the untreated paper; however, the breaking point largely differed for these composites. The breaking strain and breaking stress for the Glc composite slightly decreased and those for the MC composite gradually increased with the concentration of materials composited. Significant increases in the mechanical properties were observed for the CMC composite. The breaking stress, breaking strain, and breaking energy for the 3 wt.% CMC composite were 2.0-, 3.9-, and 8.0-fold higher than those for untreated paper, respectively. SEM photographs indicated that the CMC penetrated into the inner part of the paper. These results strongly suggest that the mechanical improvement for CMC composites can be understood as an enhancement of the bond strength between the paper fibrils by CMC, which acts as a bonding agent. It was also revealed that the breaking strain, breaking stress, and breaking energy for the CMC composites were at maximum at the first cycle and decreased gradually as the immersion cycles increased. In recent years, paper‐based functional materials have received extensive attention in the field of energy storage due to their advantages of rich and adjustable porous network structure and good flexibility. As an important energy storage device, paper‐based supercapacitors have important application prospects in many fields and have also received extensive attention from researchers in recent years. At present, researchers have modified and regulated paper‐based materials by different means such as structural design and material composition to enhance their electrochemical storage capacity. The development of paper‐based supercapacitors provides an important direction for the development of green and sustainable energy. Therefore, it is of great significance to summarize the relevant work of paper‐based supercapacitors for their rapid development and application. In this review, the recent research progress of paper‐based supercapacitors based on cellulose was summarized in terms of various cellulose‐based composites, preparation skills, and electrochemical performance. Finally, some opinions on the problems in the development of this field and the future development trend were proposed. Achieving the desired properties of paper such as strength, durability, and printability remains challenging. Paper mills employ calcium carbonate (CaCO3) as a filler to boost paper's brightness, opacity, and printability. However, weak interaction between cellulose fibers and CaCO3 particles creates different issues in the papermaking industry. Therefore, this study explores the influence of various inorganic additives as crosslinkers such as mesoporous SiO2 nanospheres, TiO2 nanoparticles, h-BN nanoflakes, and hydroxylated h-BN nanoflakes (h-BN-OH) on inorganic fillers content in the paper. They were introduced to the paper pulp in the form of a polyethylene glycol (PEG) suspension to enable bonding between the inorganic particles and the paper pulp. Our findings have been revealed based on detailed microscopic and structural analyses, e.g., transmission and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms. Finally, the inorganic fillers (CaCO3 and respective inorganic additives) content was evaluated following ISO 1762:2001 guidelines. Conducted evaluations allowed us to identify the most efficient crosslinker (SiO2 nanoparticles) in terms of inorganic filler retention. Paper sheets modified with SiO2 enhance the retention of the fillers by ~12.1%. Therefore, we believe these findings offer valuable insights for enhancing the papermaking process toward boosting the quality of the resulting paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
