Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and quantifying the carbon footprint (CF) of rice-cropping systems in the context of food security is an important step toward the sustainability of rice production. Exploring the key factors affecting emission reduction in rice production is important to properly evaluate the impact of China's rice-cropping systems on global climate change. This review provides an overview of the direct and indirect CF in rice-cropping systems; analyzes the influencing factors in terms of rice-based cropping systems, varieties and agronomic practices; and proposes mitigation strategies. Different studies have shown that direct and indirect GHG emissions in rice-based cropping systems accounted for 38.3 to 95.5% and 4.5 to 61.7% of total emissions, respectively. And the CFs of ratoon rice, rice-wheat, rice-maize, rice-rapeseed, and rice-fish systems ranged from 316,9 kg CO2-eq kg-1 to 258,47 kg CO2-eq kg-1, which are lower than that in a double-rice planting system. High-yielding rice, drought-resistant rice, and other hybrids can mitigate GHG emissions from paddy fields by 3.7 ~ 21.5%. Furthermore, organic matter, water, tillage, straw incorporation, conservation tillage, reduced nitrogen fertilizer use, and added biochar and methane inhibitors could reduce emissions. Therefore, through reasonable agronomic measures, variety selection and optimal layout of rice-based rotation systems, the carbon neutral rate of rice production can be improved to help the national carbon sequestration and emission reduction target. Due to increasing global warming and the frequent occurrence of severe drought risk in recent decades, many studies have investigated drought in China. However, the spatiotemporal heterogeneities of droughts are complicated, and a comprehensive analysis of the driving forces has not been thoroughly explored. In this paper, we studied the temporal and spatial patterns of drought in China from 1960 to 2018 and disclosed its relationship with multiple teleconnection factors on different time scales. The results show that (1) Drought in China has exhibited a fluctuating increasing trend over the past 59 years, with a standardized precipitation–evapotranspiration index (SPEI) rate of change of –0.12/10 a, and the most severe droughts occurred during 2000–2010. (2) There was a significant abrupt change in China's meteorological droughts induced by climate change around 1997. (3) The trend in China was characterized by drought in spring and autumn and humidification in winter, while the trend in the Southwest River Basin was characterized by drought. (4) A combination of factors can best explain the drought variations from basin to basin, and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-Arctic Oscillation (AO) was most commonly the best predictor. Based on the data of 2254 daily meteorological stations in China from 1961 to 2021, this study calculated the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) of the national multi-time scale by using the FAO Penman–Monteith model to quantify the changes in dry and wet conditions. The Mann–Kendall mutation test, wavelet analysis, and other methods were used to study the spatial pattern and temporal evolution of drought. The results showed: (1) In the past 61 years, there were obvious spatial and temporal differences in drought in China, and the interannual variation in drought severity in SPEI-1, SPEI-3, and SPEI-12 gradually decreased at a rate of 0.005/10a, 0.021/10a, and 0.092/10a, respectively. (2) The time point of dry and wet mutation was 1989 according to the MK mutagenicity test. (3) Wavelet analysis showed that the drought cycle on the annual scale and the seasonal scale was consistent, and the main period was about 30 years. (4) In the past 61 years, the drought intensity of different degrees in China has shown a weakening trend, and the drought intensity reached the highest value in 61 years in 1978, at 1836.42. In 2020, the drought intensity was the lowest, at 261.55. (5) The proportion of drought stations has shown a decreasing trend. The proportion of drought-free stations has fluctuated greatly, ranging from 42.12% to 89.25%, with 2020 being the highest. This study provides a scientific basis for further research on the causes and coping strategies of drought and is of great significance for strengthening China's drought monitoring, early warning ,and adaptation capabilities. The intensification of the regional water cycle resulting from climate change, coupled with the influence of human activities, has brought about alterations in the frequency, scale, and intensity of droughts. In this study, based on hydrological big data and the standardized runoff drought index (SRI), the multi-scale spatiotemporal evolution of hydrological drought in China from 1948 to 2014 was analyzed using the run-length theory and gravity center model. Meanwhile, the hydrological drought hazard index was constructed to analyze the distribution of the hazard levels of drought in China. The results showed that, during 1948~2014, there was an opposite spatial distribution between the average intensity and the average coverage–duration–frequency of drought in the Yellow River Basin, Haihe River Basin and southeastern river basins. The drought situation in most river basins in China has shown an aggravating trend, among which the southeastern river basins, Haihe River Basin, Songliao River Basin and Pearl River Basin have generally shown an aggravating trend. The drought situation in China was severe in the 1950s and 1960s, gradually reduced in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, and the drought situation was the mildest in the 1990s. After entering the 21st century, the drought situation began to worsen sharply. Meanwhile, from 1948 to 2014, the hazard level of drought generally presented a pattern of high in the west and north, and low in the east and south. The hazard levels of drought in the northwest and northeast were generally higher, and those in the southwest and southeast regions were generally lower.
