Molecular chirality has traditionally been viewed as a binary property where a molecule is classified as either chiral or achiral, yet in recent decades, mathematical methods for quantifying chirality have been explored. Here, we use toy molecular systems to systematically compare the performance of two state-of-the-art chirality measures: (1) the Continuous Chirality Measure (CCM) and (2) the Chirality Characteristic (χ). We find that both methods exhibit qualitatively similar behavior when applied to simple molecular systems such as a four-site molecule or the polymer double-helix, but we show that the CCM may be more suitable for evaluating the chirality of arbitrary molecules or abstract structures such as normal vibrational modes. We discuss a range of considerations for applying these methods to molecular systems in general, and we provide links to user-friendly codes for both methods. We aim for this paper to serve as a concise resource for scientists attempting to familiarize themselves with these chirality measures or attempting to implement chirality measures in their own work. Recently supramolecular chirality has received increasing interest due to its potential applications in enantioselective sensors and chromatographic separation of enantiomers. The appearance of such chirality results from the helical organization of molecules manifested by H-bonding interactions, weak van der Waals forces, and electrostatic forces. In recent years a lot of interest has been focused towards the synthesis of chiral conjugated polymers such as polyacetylene, polythiophene, polypyrrole, polyaniline (PANI), and poly(p-phenylene vinylene) due to their potential applications in circularly polarized electroluminescence and chiral electrode for asymmetric synthesis. Among these chiral PANI is desirable because it is inexpensive, environmentally stable, and can be readily doped and dedoped using simple acid–base stimuli. Besides PANI does not require any synthetic steps before the polymerization of achiral aniline and totally relies on the preferential formation of either right- or left-handed helix of the polymer backbone due to the presence of a chiral dopant in the reaction medium. Different types of chiral acids have been used for the creation of helical polyaniline using different methods. This review paper presents a detailed discussion of different methods of synthesizing helical/chiral polyaniline, different types of dopants used for chirality induction, chirality measurement by circular dichroism spectroscopy, parameters controlling induction and stabilization of chirality in PANI, and application of chiral polyanilines in diverse areas such as enantiomer separation, enantioselective synthesis, chiral nanocomposites, and microwave absorption. Protein misfolding and amyloid formation are implicated in the protein dysfunction, but the underlying mechanism remains to be clarified due to the lack of effective tools for detecting the transient intermediates. Sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG‐VS) has emerged as a powerful tool for identifying the structure and dynamics of proteins at the interfaces. In this review, we summarize recent SFG‐VS studies on the structure and dynamics of membrane‐bound proteins during misfolding processes. This paper first introduces the methods for determining the secondary structure of interfacial proteins: combining chiral and achiral spectra of amide A and amide I bands and combining amide I, amide II, and amide III spectral features. To demonstrate the ability of SFG‐VS in investigating the interfacial protein misfolding and amyloid formation, studies on the interactions between different peptides/proteins (islet amyloid polypeptide, amyloid β, prion protein, fused in sarcoma protein, hen egg‐white lysozyme, fusing fusion peptide, class I hydrophobin SC3 and class II hydrophobin HFBI) and surfaces such as lipid membranes are discussed. These molecular‐level studies revealed that SFG‐VS can provide a unique understanding of the mechanism of interfacial protein misfolding and amyloid formation in real time, in situ and without any exogenous labeling. The NIR-activated bacteria-killing efficiencies of chiral CuS NPs depended on the excitation light polarization and the chiral configuration enhanced photothermal efficiency. Chiral CuS NPs which adsorb on or aggregate outside the bacteria or even enter the bacteria would increase the ambient temperature quickly under NIR illumination through the photothermal effect, which leads to the inactivation of proteins of bacteria. As the drawbacks of antibiotics in treating bacterial infections emerged, physical methods such as near-infrared-activated (NIR-activated) bacterial killing, have attracted great interests for their advantages of no resistance, short action time and few side effects. In this manuscript, NIR-activated bacteria-killing performance of chiral copper sulphide nanoparticles (L-/ d -CuS NPs) was investigated using linearly polarized light (LPL) and circularly polarized light (CPL) as illumination sources, respectively. Chiral CuS NPs showed enhanced NIR-activated bacteria-killing effect compared with achiral CuS NPs under the same conditions. Moreover, these chiral CuS NPs showed obvious chirality-related antibacterial effect: the bacterial killing was more efficient under CPL activation, and L- and d -CuS NPs had higher antibacterial efficiency under left circularly polarized light (LCPL) and right circularly polarized light (RCPL), respectively. The possible mechanism of bacteria-killing performance for chiral CuS NPs was discussed in detailed. Photothermal bacteria-killing tests of chiral CuS NPs "sealed" in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) demonstrated the individual influence of photothermal effect. Chiroptical response, demonstrating chiral interaction between optical vortex and chiral structure, plays an important role in variety of fields like optics and material science. However, the flexibility and efficiency of chiral structure fabrication are limited due to mask requirement and a point‐by‐point constructing strategy. In this paper, a novel chiral lithography method is proposed that utilizes optical vortex phase beam shaping to achieve chiral structure processing with high efficiency and flexibility. By programming topological charges of the vortex phase, chiral structures with adjustable appearance, rotation, and chirality can be produced using femtosecond laser single pulse exposure. Transmittance measurements of fabricated chiral structures array confirm a 66% helical dichroism that is predicted by simulation. Moreover, with the aid of convolutional neural networks (CNN), an accuracy of 98% in Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) recognition can be achieved. This chiral lithography method provides an alternative for chiral structure fabrication and holds promise in the development of chiral optics, optical communications, and next‐generation optical devices. The existence of an object, non-superimposable on its mirror image, constitutes the phenomenon of chirality. This phenomenon is often treated as a curiosity without broader practical consequences. This paper aims to show the significant implications of chirality for chemistry and biology. Chirality is inherent to all living organisms and is essential for their function. For instance, biomolecules are composed of chiral building blocks (amino acids, monosaccharides), which are chiral and occur predominantly with one sense of handedness (homochirality of life). The explanation of the evolution of the homochirality of life therefore helps answer one of the important questions connected with the origin of life.. The paper concludes with a section devoted to current Czech stereochemical terminology. Fundamental studies of the interaction of chiral light with chiral matter are important for the development of techniques that allow handedness‐selective optical detection of chiral organic molecules. One approach to achieve this goal is the creation of a Fabry–Pérot cavity that supports eigenmodes with a desired electromagnetic handedness. This paper theoretically studies chiral Fabry–Pérot cavities with mirrors comprising 1D photonic crystal slabs made of van der Waals As2S3, a material with one of the highest known in‐plane anisotropies. By utilizing the anisotropy provided by As2S3, Fabry–Pérot cavities with constitutional and configurational chiralities are designed. It is demonstrated that in cavities with constitutional chirality, electromagnetic modes of left or right handedness exist due to the chirality of both mirrors, often referred to as handedness preserving mirrors in the literature. At the same time, cavities with configurational chirality support modes of both handednesses due to the chiral morphology of the entire structure, set by the twist angle between the optical axes of the upper and lower non‐chiral anisotropic mirrors. The developed chiral Fabry–Pérot cavities can be tuned to any distance between the mirrors by properly twisting them, making such systems a prospective platform for the coupling of chiral light with chiral matter. This paper explores and revisits in detail the formation and characterization of sugar-based aminonitriles, whose ultimate origin can be traced to the interaction of biomolecules with cyanide. Although the synthesis and spectroscopic data of 2-amino-aldononitriles were reported long ago, there are both contradictory and confusing results among the published data. We have now addressed this concern through an exhaustive structural elucidation of acylated 2-amino- and 2-alkyl(aryl)amino-2-deoxyaldonitriles using mass spectrometry and FT-IR, FT–Raman, and NMR spectroscopies. Several structures could be unambiguously determined through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which allowed us to correct other misassignments. Moreover, this study unveils how steric and electronic effects influence the acylation outcome of the amino, (alkyl, aryl)amino, or acetamido group at C-2. The chirality at the latter, which was assigned tentatively through optical rotation correlation, and hence the preferential threo stereochemistry generated during the cyanohydrin synthesis of 2-amino-2-deoxy aldononitriles have now been established with confidence. Manipulating plasmonic chirality has shown promising applications in nanophotonics, stereochemistry, chirality sensing, and biomedicine. However, to reconfigure plasmonic chirality, the strategy of constructing chiral plasmonic systems with a tunable morphology is cumbersome and complicated to apply for integrated devices. Here, we present a simple and effective method that can also manipulate chirality and control chiral light–matter interactions only via strong coupling between chiral plasmonic nanoparticles and excitons. This paper presents a chiral plexcitonic system consisting of L-shaped nanorod dimers and achiral molecule excitons. The circular dichroism (CD) spectra in our strong-coupling system can be calculated by finite element method simulations. We found that the formation of the chiral plexcitons can significantly modulate the CD spectra, including the appearance of new hybridized peaks, double Rabi splitting, and bisignate anti-crossing behaviors. This phenomenon can be explained by our extended coupled-mode theory. Moreover, we explored the applications of this method in enantiomer ratio sensing by using the properties of the CD spectra. We found a strong linear dependence of the CD spectra on the enantiomer ratio. Our work provides a facile and efficient method to modulate the chirality of nanosystems, deepens our understanding of chiral plexcitons in nanosystems, and facilitates the development of chiral devices and chiral sensing. In this paper, we apply a numerical integration strategy recently developed for determining the deformation shapes of structures constituted by Cosserat rods, to predict the behavior of panto-cylinders. Panto-cylinders have, as microstructure, a set of two families of helicoidal beams interconnected by perfect or elastic joints. The pivot's free rotation axis is, in the reference configuration, orthogonal to the cylindrical surfaces spanned by the beams. We perform a series of numerical simulations looking for the mechanical parameters which exalt the chirality effects in the structure. For the performed compression, extensions, shear, and torsion tests, we find chiral deformation patterns with a dependence on the type of joint and its length. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of hierarchically structured materials as catalysts has been finding increasing application in the past years. For these catalytic systems, not only the nano‐scale matters: a high degree of order across multiple length scales, along with its control and analytical assessment, is of paramount importance to obtain innovative properties that can find application in catalysis. Most reviews dealing with hierarchically structured materials are concerned with the "bottom‐up" transfer of structural information along the different length scales, with special emphasis on the transmission of chirality. Due to their mesoscale size together with their complex behaviour, these systems are often susceptible to feel the effects of macroscopic forces, that can exert a "top‐down" control of their catalytic properties, so that an external stimulus, acting at the level of the supramolecular architecture of the catalyst, can ultimately determine the outcome of the catalyzed reaction at the molecular level. We review in this paper some recent reports that deal with the experimental implementation of this concept, either by using a mechanical force in a full range direct transmission to the reaction coordinate, or by means of a stepwise relay transmission from the macroscopic level (purely supramolecular chirality) to the nanoscopic one. Chiral metamaterials exhibit significant circular dichroism (CD) and chiral signal enhancement, which have the potential to be used in novel nano-optical devices. This work describes a bilayer resonant planar chiral metamaterial (PCM) composed of positive and negative Z-shaped gold nanoparticles. It is found that in the near-infrared region, the structure has obvious optical active and chiral near-field enhancement. To explore the origin of chirality, linear superposition method is applied to analyze chiral response intuitively and concisely. What's more, the dependence of the CD spectra on the PCM parameters was thoroughly explored, showing that the CD properties of the proposed PCM arrays strongly depend on the geometric parameters and material type. The bilayer PCM array proposed in this paper not only has a strong chiral signal but also is easy to prepare. More importantly, the spectrum of PCM can be adjusted by simply adjusting the particle rotation angle and changing the material of the dielectric layer, which has broad potential application prospects in the fields of chiral molecular biosensing and asymmetric information transmission. The reaction of trans‐[Pt(DMSO)2MeCl] with 2‐alkylsubstituted pyridines pyR affords a series of complexes of the type [Pt(pyR)(DMSO)MeCl]. These complexes are rare examples of organometallic square‐planar complexes having four different ligands. Of the three possible geometric isomers, only the trans(N,S)‐[Pt(pyR)(DMSO)MeCl] was observed in solution and isolated in the solid state. However, the lack of chirality typical to square planar geometry can be resolved in several ways one of which is described in this paper. 1H NMR studies reveal diastereotopicity of the DMSO methyls, as well as the CH2 protons in the ethyl‐ and neopentyl‐pyridine complexes and the methyls in the isopropyl‐pyridine derivative. This observation can be ascribed to restricted rotations around the Pt−N bond, thus resulting in the presence of planar chirality for these complexes. Additionally, large downfield shifts in the 1H NMR spectra of the α C−H protons in the pyridine substituents suggested the presence of Pt⋯H−C interactions, confirmed via single crystal X‐ray studies in the case of the isopropyl complex [Pt(pyip)(DMSO)MeCl] (4), which shows an apical Pt⋯H interaction with a short 2.585 Å distance. One of the most challenging tasks in analytical chemistry is the determination of the chirality (identification of an enantiomeric composition) in solids mainly because of the strict requirements of the pharmaceutical industry for enantiomerically pure drugs. Although there are a few methods available to accomplish enantio‑differentiation in solids, for example: X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), CD spectroscopy, and low-frequency (LF) Raman spectroscopy, this is still very challenging. In this work, we have developed a new method to measure the chirality of crystals, based on electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy of chiral crystals doped with Cu2+ as the EPR active ion. Here, we demonstrate our approach using a model system of l - and DL-Histidine crystals doped with Cu2+. We show that EPR measurements of the Cu2+-doped Histidine crystals can accurately determine the chirality and enantiomeric composition of the crystals. We present a very preliminary example of this technique, and we hope that in the future it will be possible to refine and develop this method for many other chiral organic crystal systems. This paper presents a continuum-molecular formulation for bi-dimensional micropolar media within the mathematical formalism of a revised peridynamic theory with oriented material points. A variational procedure is considered to derive the fundamental governing equations of the model, which postulates that material points interact through pair potentials allowing generalized pairwise actions to be derived as energy conjugates to properly defined pairwise deformation measures. While continuity of mass is assumed, constitutive laws are produced for long-range micro-interactions to reproduce the effective behavior of the material at the macro-scale. The definition of proper micromoduli functions respecting material symmetries and invariance properties allows then to obtain a non-local micropolar continuum based on pseudo-discrete kinematics, while providing a mechanism-based description of material anisotropy and coupling behaviors uncovered by classical elasticity. An analytic micro-macro moduli correspondence procedure is also established, based on the formal analogy with the constitutive tensor of centrosymmetric planar micropolar continua. As an important result of this research, we show that distinctive chiral effects of micropolar elasticity can be reproduced by introducing a directional independent pseudo-scalar pair potential, which turns out to be analytically vanishing when the rotationally invariant part of the corresponding continuum elastic tensor is invariant to mirror reflections as well. Moreover, the proposed formulation demonstrates sensitivity to elastic bending size-effect as specific property of structured materials homogenized as micropolar continua, and related to the characteristic length of their underlying microstructure. The resulting constitutive non-locality, which plays an important role in fracture problems, is conceptually separated with respect to the intrinsic non-local character of the model related to the integral nature of its governing equations, and then does not vanish when the horizon reduces to zero. The theoretical findings and the effectiveness of the model are successfully verified through illustrative examples referred to representative cases of structured materials homogenized as micropolar continua, including length-scale dependent quasi-static crack propagation as well as the mechanism-based description of the coupling between bulk strain and micro-rotation in elastic bi-dimensional homogenized chiral lattices. • Continuum-molecular formulation for bi-dimensional micropolar elasticity. • Mechanism-based description of material anisotropy and chiral properties. • All the symmetry classes of centrosymmetric 2D micropolar elasticity are covered. • Sensitivity to bending size-effect in microstructured solids is shown. • Analogies between continuum-molecular models and periodic lattice-like materials. Comprehensive Summary The 21st century has witnessed a continuous evolution in the development of boron‐stereogenic chemistry. Since the 1990s, various innovations for the synthesis of tetracoordinate boron‐stereogenic compounds, which exhibited great potential applications, have been demonstrated by synthetic chemists. This paper reviews the significant progress and recent advances towards the assembly of enantioenriched boron‐stereogenic compounds, and hopes to shed light on new perspectives and inspire further research in this emerging field. Plasmonic dimer metamaterials have been widely utilized in the study of chiral nanophotonics due to their special chiroptical properties. The chiroptical properties of simple rod-like dimer metamaterials can be intuitively described by the Born–Kuhn (BK) model, in which the coupling parameter between oscillators is commonly used as a constant. However, the BK model is limited for complex dimer metamaterials because the behavior of the oscillators is constrained by the geometry of the structure. In this paper, inspired by equivalent LC-coupled circuits, we develop the BK model to predict the chiroptical properties of the split-ring resonator (SRR) dimer metamaterials, where the coupling of oscillators depends on both the twist angle of the SRR dimers and the frequency of the incident light. Using the extended BK model, we predict that there exists a special twist angle, which will cause the chirality of the SRR dimer metamaterials to reverse. More importantly, in such specific spatial configurations, the SRR dimer metamaterials with rectangular slits not only retain the enhancement of the chiral near-field, but also limit the chiroptical far-field response because the interactions of electricity and magnetism cancel each other out. In addition, combined with simulation calculations, we find that the rectangular SRR dimer metamaterials have strong robustness within a certain range of structural regulation. • Amino acid modified wood solves the disadvantage of high cost and difficult separation of chiral catalysis. • Wood natural tertiary channels are fully utilized to enhance mass flow and promote catalytic reactions. • The stable bonding of amino acids not only improves performance, but also prolongs the lifetime of the catalyst. Molecular sieve catalysts have been adopted in chiral catalytic reactions due to their high specific surface area, nano-scaled pores and effective separation, however, the problems like low utilization ratio of channels, difficult modification, long period and complex preparation, and no economic benefits reduce its widely application. In this paper, natural wood was employed as raw material to preserve the cellulose skeleton rich in poly‑hydroxyl and the multistage porous channels of nanometer, micron and millimeter by simple treatment. A low-cost, high-yield and high-selectivity chiral catalyst could be obtained from wood with chiral catalytic sites. The in situ grafting method retains the well-developed multistage pore structure of wood, enhances the mass transfer and possesses universal applicability to different aldol condensation reactions. The asymmetric reaction of cyclohexanone and p-nitrobenzaldehyde is catalyzed by grafting readily available amino acids such as threonine, with a yield of 82% and selectivity of 57%. Molecular sieve-like wood possesses the advantages of low economic cost and good catalytic performance, which provides a potential possibility to replace traditional molecular sieve catalyst.
