The magnitude of pretension force serves as an important indicator of the effectiveness of anchor bolt active support and is one of the significant factors influencing the stability of tunnel surrounding rock. Therefore, in practical engineering, it is crucial to establish the relationship between pretension torque and pretension force. However, current research in this field has some limitations. With a specific mine in western China as the engineering background, this paper first analyzed the influence factors of surrounding rock deformation and failure, established a mechanical model for pretension structure of anchor bolt support, and derived the quantitative relationship between pretension torque and pretension force based on hypothetical conditions. Finally, it proposed the loss effect of anchor bolt support and modified the pretightening loss coefficient for engineering application. The research results show that the actual pretightening force of anchor support is lower due to the influence of deep soft coal seam, which leads to failure of coal pillar under mining stress. The loss effect of surrounding rock on pretightening force was represented by a coefficient k, and the modified value of the coefficient was calculated as 0.19∼0.43. By applying the modified relationship between pretightening torque and pretightening force, it was found that the actual pretightening torque of 300 Nm applied to 11307 return air roadway effectively controlled surrounding rock deformation and failure, with coal pillar displacement less than 120 mm. [Objective] As the main energy source in China, coal has an important strategic position in the country's economic development. China's coal-based energy structure model will not change in the short term, but coal mine accidents occur frequently. Mine fire is a major disaster that threatens safe coal mine production, which incurs huge economic losses and threatens the personal safety of miners and coal mine production. However, coal spontaneous combustion primarily causes mine fires. The occurrence mechanism of coal spontaneous combustion is highly complex and is affected by the inherent combustion characteristics of coal and external environmental factors. Therefore, it is necessary to comprehensively analyze various phenomena and characteristics in the process of coal spontaneous combustion and apply quantitative indicators to express to predict the risk and ensure the safe production of the mine. [Methods] Oxygen concentration is an important factor influencing coal oxidation reaction. In this paper, the temperature-programmed experimental system is used to conduct the spontaneous combustion experiment of coal samples with three oxygen concentrations of 20.9%, 10%, and 7% regarding the heat dissipation, oxidation, and asphyxiation zones in the goaf. The gas products at different temperature stages are collected, the effects of temperature and oxygen concentration on the concentration of gas products are analyzed, and the index gases are classified and evaluated in detail. [Results] The results show the following: (1) The cross-point temperature (CPT) decreases with the increase in the oxygen concentration. The cross-point temperature under dry-air conditions is 144.6 °C. The error between the CPT value calculated by the BM empirical relationship and the experimental data is only 6.08%. The higher the oxygen concentration, the smaller the critical temperature, and the higher the gas concentration. (2) The content of oxidation products increases with the oxygen concentration. When heating commences, minimal CO and CH4 gases are generated, but with the increase in the temperature, C2H4 and C2H6 gases appear gradually. The oxidation reaction of coal samples is primarily affected by temperature and oxygen concentration. At a certain temperature, the higher the oxygen concentration, the more intense the coal-oxygen composite reaction, and more gas products appear. (3) For different oxygen concentration environments, the regularity of generating CO gas is highly significant, which can be used as an indicator gas to evaluate the spontaneous combustion of coal. In dry air, the temperature of C2H4 is earlier than that of C3H6, implying that the existence of C2H4 indicates that the coal oxidation process has entered an accelerated stage. The emergence of C3H6 gas marks the transformation of the coal oxidation into strong oxidation. Recently, the programmed temperature rise experiment has become an important research field. [Conclusions] Through indoor experiments, students can deeply understand the mechanism of coal spontaneous combustion and the process of establishing the prediction index system and introduce the experiment into the classroom. This practical teaching approach not only helps students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems but also broadens their horizons and improves their interest in scientific research, achieving better teaching results. With the adjustment of energy structure, the utilization of hydrogen energy has been widely attended. China's carbon neutrality targets make it urgent to change traditional coal-fired power generation. The paper investigates the combustion of pulverized coal blended with hydrogen to reduce carbon emissions. In terms of calorific value, the pulverized coal combustion with hydrogen at 1%, 5%, and 10% blending ratios is investigated. The results show that there is a significant reduction in CO2 concentration after hydrogen blending. The CO2 concentration (mole fraction) decreased from 15.6% to 13.6% for the 10% hydrogen blending condition compared to the non-hydrogen blending condition. The rapid combustion of hydrogen produces large amounts of heat in a short period, which helps the ignition of pulverized coal. However, as the proportion of hydrogen blending increases, the production of large amounts of H2O gives an overall lower temperature. On the other hand, the temperature distribution is more uniform. The concentrations of O2 and CO in the upper part of the furnace increased. The current air distribution pattern cannot satisfy the adequate combustion of the fuel after hydrogen blending. Long-term accumulation of coal gangue hill has a high risk of spontaneous combustion, and the toxic and harmful gases emitted by spontaneous combustion seriously pollute the atmosphere. The key to managing the spontaneous combustion fire of coal gangue hill lies in the accurate measurement of fire source location. However, measuring the fire source location of surface coal gangue hill lacks experimental and empirical research. In this paper, an oxidation warming experiment was conducted on the coal gangue samples, and the law of radon gas exhalation from coal gangue under different temperatures was analyzed. At the same time, surface thermometry and isotope radon measurement were applied to measure the high-temperature areas inside the gangue hill, and the measurement results were compared. The experimental results show that as the temperature of gangue increases, the amount of radon gas exhalation in gangue shows a changing trend of rising first and then decreasing. The radon exhalation from coal gangue can be divided into three stages. In the I stage (30 ~ 100°C), the evaporation of pore water in coal gangue leads to the exhalation of radon in water, causing the increase of radon concentration; in the II stage (100 ~ 350°C), the coal gangue is pyrolyzed at high temperature, and a large amount of radon is exhalated from the closed pores; in the III stage (350 ~ 450°C), after the first two stages of radon release, the number of radon atoms in this stage decreases, leading to a rapid decrease of radon concentration. The field measurement results show that compared with the surface thermometry method, the isotope radon measurement method is less disturbed by external conditions, and the circled fire area is more accurate, which has essential theoretical significance and practical application value for the accurate measurement of fire source location in coal gangue hill. With the deterioration of underground coal quality, hundreds of millions of tons of coal slime in China need to be treated using flotation methods every year. However, the design and selection of coal slurry flotation collectors lack theoretical guidance. In this paper, the quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) model between the molecular structure descriptors of collectors and the flotation recovery and selectivity index is established by using pure kaolinite/clean coal flotation experiments and molecular simulation techniques. Flotation results showed that the flotation recovery rate of kaolinite by collectors with larger head group size, such as DDMAC, DDP, and DTAC, is higher than that of the other collectors with smaller head group size. DDA, DDP, and DD have similar flotation capabilities for clean coal, and their selectivity was slightly better than others. The QSAR model between the molecular structure descriptor and the selectivity index was successfully constructed by combining flotation experiments and molecular simulation results. The reliability of this model has been proven through theoretical analysis and flotation experiments. The molecular simulation results indicate that all eight collectors can advertise on 001 (−) surface of kaolinite, but the final advertisement configuration is different. DDA has less coverage on the surface of kaolinite. When the collector is DDA, the concentration of water molecules near the 001 (−) surface of kaolinite is the highest, indicating that the collector DDA has the weakest effect on improving the hydrophobicity of the 001 (−) surface of kaolinite. DDMAC and DDBAC have the best facilitation to the surface hydrophobicity of kaolinite 001 (−). Marine sediments serve as crucial reservoirs for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and their PAH signatures offer valuable historical pollution records. This article provides a comprehensive review of the pollution status of 16 priority PAHs in more than 1000 sediments from the East China Sea (ECS). It focuses on the PAH sources, spatiotemporal distributions, driving factors, and ecological risks, with information derived from peer-reviewed papers published between 2003 and 2023. The results revealed that vehicular emissions, mixed combustion sources of coal, biomass, and coke, as well as petrogenic sources, were the primary contributors to PAH pollution in the ECS sediments, accounting for 50%, 34%, and 16%, respectively. Human activities, hydrodynamic mechanisms, and environmental variables such as particle size and organic matter, collectively influenced the distribution of PAHs. Additionally, the population size and economic development played a key role in the temporal distribution of PAHs in the ECS sediments. The ecotoxicity assessment of PAHs in sediments indicated a low risk level. These outcomes are expected to provide environmentalists with detailed and up-to-date insights into sedimentary PAHs in the ECS, helping to develop suitable monitoring plans and strategies for promoting better management of ECS environment. Water-insoluble organic carbon (WIOC) constitutes a substantial portion of organic carbon (OC) and contributes significantly to light absorption by brown carbon (BrC), playing pivotal roles in climate forcing. China is a hotspot region with high levels of OC and BrC, but information regarding the sources and light-absorbing properties of WIOC on a national scale remains scarce. Here, we investigated the light-absorbing properties and sources of WIOC in 10 representative urban cities in China. On average, WIOC made up 33.4 ± 7.66 % and 40.5 ± 9.73 % of concentrations and light absorption at 365 nm (Abs 365) of extractable OC (EX-OC), which includes relatively hydrophobic OC (WIOC and humic-like substances, HULIS-C) and hydrophilic OC (non-humic-like substances, non-HULIS-C). The mass absorption efficiency of WIOC at 365 nm (MAE 365) was (1.59 ± 0.55 m2(gC)-1) comparable to that of HULIS (1.54 ± 0.57 m2(gC)-1) but significantly higher than non-HULIS (0.71 ± 0.28 m2(gC)-1), indicating that hydrophobic OC possesses a stronger light-absorbing capacity than hydrophilic OC. Biomass burning (31.0 %) and coal combustion (31.1 %) were the dominant sources of WIOC, with coal combustion sources exhibiting the strongest light-absorbing capacity. Moreover, employing the simple forcing efficiency (SFE 300–700nm) method, we observed that WIOC exhibited the highest SFE 300–700nm (6.57 ± 5.37 Wg-1) among the EX-OC fractions. The radiative forcing of EX-OC was predominantly contributed by hydrophobic OC (WIOC – 39.4 ± 15.5 % and HULIS – 39.5 ± 12.1 %). Considering the aromaticity, sources, and atmospheric processes of different carbonaceous components, we propose a light-absorbing carbonaceous continuum, revealing that components enriched with fossil sources tend to possess stronger light-absorbing capacity, higher aromatic levels, increased molecular weights, and greater recalcitrance in the atmosphere. Reducing fossil fuel emissions emerges as an effective means of mitigating both gaseous (CO2) and particulate light-absorbing carbonaceous warming components. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Underground coal gasification is an essential means of meeting the growing energy needs of some countries. In this paper, a new numerical simulation method of thermal-force-chemical-displacement multi-field coupling is developed, and in order to better adapt to the actual working conditions, taking Shanjiaoshu Coal Mine as the geological background, the first gasification working face of No. 12 coal seam is simulated based on the controlled retraction injection point technology. This method is used to simulate the heating of coal body by the ignition device at the initial stage of UCG, the chemical-thermal changes triggered by spontaneous combustion of the coal body under the continuous backward movement of the injection point, and the simulation of the formation of the cavity after the coal gasification reaction. Finally, the evolution of temperature and displacement fields in No.12 coal seam after gasification reaction is analyzed. While aqueous-phase processing is known to contribute to the formation of nitrogen-containing organic compounds (NOCs), the specific pathways involved remain poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to characterize the NOCs present in both pre-fog aerosols and fog water collected at a suburban site in northern China. Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry was utilized to analyze the molecular composition of NOCs in both negative and positive modes of electrospray ionization (ESI - and ESI +). In both pre-fog aerosols and fog water samples, NOCs constituted a significant portion, accounting for over 60 % of all assigned formulas in ESI - and more than 80 % in ESI +. By comparing the molecular composition of NOCs originating from biomass burning, coal combustion, and vehicle emissions, we identified that 72.3 % of NOCs in pre-fog aerosols were attributed to primary anthropogenic sources (pNOCs), while the remaining NOCs were categorized as secondary NOCs formed within the aerosols (saNOCs). Unique NOCs found in fog water were classified as secondary NOCs formed within the fog water (sfNOCs). Through a comprehensive "precursor–product pair" screening involving 39 reaction pathways, we observed that the nitration reaction, the amine pathway, and the intramolecular N-heterocycle pathway of NH 3 addition reactions contributed 43.6 %, 22.1 %, and 11.6 % of saNOCs, respectively. In contrast, these pathways contributed 26.8 %, 28.4 %, and 29.7 % of sfNOCs, respectively. This disparity in formation pathways is likely influenced by the diverse precursors, the aqueous acidity, and the gas-phase species partitioning. Correspondingly, saNOCs were found to contain a higher abundance of carbohydrate-like and highly oxygenated compounds with two nitrogen atoms compared to pNOCs. Conversely, sfNOCs exhibited a higher content of lipid-like compounds with fewer oxygen atoms. These results underscore the distinct secondary processes contributing to the diversity of NOCs in aerosols and fog water, which may lead to their different climate effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mine fires have always been one of the disasters that restrict coal mining in China and endanger the life safety of underground workers. The research and development of new fire prevention materials are undoubtedly important to ensure the safe and efficient production of modern mines. At present, the main inhibiting materials used are grout material, inert gas, retarding agent, foam, gel, and so on. In order to explore the current situation of coal spontaneous combustion (CSC) fire prevention, the existing fire prevention materials were reviewed and prospected from three aspects: physical, chemical, and physicochemical inhibition. The results show that, at present, most of the methods of physicochemical inhibition are used to inhibit CSC. Antioxidants have become popular chemical inhibitors in recent years. In terms of physical inhibition, emerging biomass-based green materials, including foams, gels, and gel foams, are used to inhibit CSC. In addition, CSC fire-fighting materials also have shortcomings, including incomplete research on the mechanism of material action, poor stability of inhibitory properties, low efficiency, and economic and environmental protection to be improved. The future research direction of fire-fighting materials will be based on theoretical experiments and numerical simulation to study the mechanism and characteristics of CSC and develop new directional suppression materials with physicochemical synergies. Marine–continental transitional shale has become a new field for shale gas exploration and development in recent years. Its reservoir characteristics analysis lags significantly behind that of marine shale, which restricts the theoretical research on the accumulation of marine–continental transitional shale and the progress of exploration and development. The shale pore system is complex and has strong heterogeneity, which restricts the fine evaluation and optimization of the reservoir. Based on nitrogen adsorption–desorption experiments, the morphology and structural characteristics of coal-bearing shale pores were analyzed, and then the micro-pore structure heterogeneity was quantitatively characterized based on fractal theory and nitrogen adsorption–desorption data, and the relationship between pore structure parameters and their influence on fractal characteristics were discussed. The hysteresis loop of nitrogen desorption isotherm mainly belongs to type B, indicating ink bottle, flat plate, and slit are the main pore shapes. The pore size distribution curves are left unimodal or multimodal, with the main peak around 4 nm and 20–60 nm. Smaller pores develop a larger specific surface area, resulting in a high value of fractal dimension (2.564 to 2.677). The rougher the pore surface and the larger the specific surface area provide an adequate adsorption site for shale gas adsorption and aggregation. Thus, fractal characteristics conduced to understand the pore structure, heterogeneity, and gas-bearing property of coal-bearing shale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To investigate the optical characteristics and sources of brown carbon (BrC) in North China, where the atmospheric aerosol loadings are high and have severe impacts on Earth's climate system, we collected fine aerosols (PM 2.5) at an urban site in Tianjin over a 1-year period. We measured the ultraviolet (UV) light absorption and excitation emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence of the water-soluble BrC (WSBrC) and the water-insoluble but methanol-soluble BrC (WI-MSBrC) in the PM 2.5 using a three-dimensional fluorescence spectrometer. The average light absorption efficiency of both WSBrC (Abs365, WSBrC) and WI-MSBrC (Abs365, WI-MSBrC) at 365 nm was found to be highest in winter (10.4 ± 6.76 and 10.0 ± 5.13 Mm-1 , respectively) and distinct from season to season. The averages of the fluorescence index (FI) and the biological index (BIX) of WSBrC were lower in summer than in the other seasons and opposite to that of the humification index (HIX), which implied that the secondary formation and further chemical processing of aerosols were more intensive during the summer period than in the other seasons. However, in winter, the higher HIX together with the higher FI and BIX of WI-MSBrC suggested that the BrC loading was mainly influenced by primary emissions from biomass burning and coal combustion. Based on the EEM, the types of fluorophores in WSBrC were divided into humic-like substances (HULIS), including low-oxygenated and high-oxygenated species and protein-like compounds (PLOM), though mostly PLOM in the WI-MSBrC. The direct radiation absorption by both WSBrC and WI-MSBrC in the range of 300–400 nm accounted for ∼ 40 % of that (SFEAbs , 4.97 ± 2.71 and 7.58 ± 5.75 Wg-1 , respectively) in the range 300–700 nm. The coal gangue coarse-aggregate content in ordinary concrete should not be too large. In order to further improve the utilization rate of coal gangue coarse aggregate, this study used the principle of "strong wrapped weak" to prepare high-performance concrete. This study considered four factors, namely, water–binder (W/B) ratios, non-spontaneous combustion coal gangue (NCCG) coarse-aggregate contents, fly ash–slag mass ratios, and silica fume coating to prepare high-performance concrete. The workability, mechanical, and durability properties were studied, and the changes in the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) of concrete before and after sulfate attack and freeze–thaw cycles were analyzed based on the SEM test. The life prediction of NCCG coarse-aggregate high-performance concrete was carried out based on the grey system GM(1,1) prediction model. The results show that the NCCG coarse-aggregate contents have the greatest effect on compressive strength, sulfate resistance, and frost resistance. The W/B ratio has the greatest effect on the anti-carbonization properties. Fly ash–slag mixing can obtain better durability. Considering the effect on the design service life of high-performance concrete, NCCG coarse aggregate is used to prepare high-performance concrete in North China, and the recommended content is 60%; in the Northwest and Northeast regions, the recommended content is 45%. In recent years, there has been a notable increase in the consumption of fossil energy, leading to a significant rise in environmental pollution, particularly in China due to its rapid development. This has resulted in the frequent occurrence of large‐scale fog and haze weather, highlighting the urgent need for environmental protection measures. To gain insights into the atmospheric conditions in China, an analysis was conducted on the wet deposition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a remote region of Central South China from 2014 to 2017. The study revealed that the average concentrations and peak values of Ʃ16PAHs in 2014 and 2015 were considerably higher than those observed in 2016 and 2017. Furthermore, it was found that five‐ring PAH species were the predominant components during 2014 and 2015, indicating a shift in the main sources of PAHs. The peaks of Ʃ16PAHs were predominantly detected in samples collected during light rain in the winter, specifically on days without heavy rainfall. This can be attributed to the absence of heavy rain, which would otherwise reduce the concentration of air pollutants. Consequently, contaminants accumulated in the air are easily enriched in rainwater. The concentrations of Ʃ15Alkyl‐PAHs also exhibited a significant correlation with the number of rainfall days. Notably, a much higher annual average concentration of Ʃ15Alkyl‐PAHs was observed in 2017, which experienced fewer rainfall days. Coal combustion, petroleum sources, and vehicular emissions accounted for 58%, 12%, and 30% of the PAHs in the air, respectively. Despite improvements in air quality in China since 2016, it is crucial to address the elevated concentrations of PAHs in the atmosphere, particularly under adverse meteorological conditions characterized by reduced rainfall. The Bohai Sea (BS) region, an area of China that is severely polluted with atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), has received wide attention in recent decades. To characterize the variations of the concentrations and sources of PAHs from June 2014 to May 2019, 15 PAH congeners (Σ15PAHs) were measured in atmospheric samples (N = 228) collected at 12 sites around the BS, and the health risk and direct medical costs associated with lung cancer caused by exposure to PAHs were also estimated. The annual daily average concentration of Σ15PAHs was 56.78 ± 4.75 ngm-3 , which was dominated by low molecular weight PAHs (LMW-PAHs) containing three rings (58.7 ± 7.8 %). During the 5-year sampling period, the atmospheric Σ15PAHs concentration reduced by 17.5 % for the whole BS region, with an especially large drop of 51.7 % observed in the tightly controlled area of Tianjin (TJ), which was mainly due to a decrease in the concentration of high molecular weight PAHs (HMW-PAHs) containing five or six rings. Generally, the concentration of Σ15PAHs was highest in winter and lowest in summer, which can mainly be attributed to the change in LMW-PAH concentration. Based on the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, PAHs in the BS region were mainly ascribed to coal combustion and biomass burning. The PAH contributions of coal combustion and motor vehicles showed different trends for the BS region (PAHs from coal combustion rose by 7.2 % and PAHs from motor vehicles fell by 22.4 %) and for TJ (PAHs from coal combustion fell by 12.6 % and PAHs from motor vehicles rose by 6.9 %). The incidence of lung cancer (ILCR) caused by exposure to atmospheric PAHs decreased by 74.1 % and 91.6 % from 2014 to 2018 in the BS region and in TJ, respectively. This was mainly due to the decrease in the concentration of highly toxic HMW-PAHs and was reflected in USD 10.7 million of savings in direct medical costs of lung cancer caused by exposure to PAHs, which represent a decrease of 46.1 % compared to the corresponding costs before air pollution prevention and control was implemented around the BS. There was an even higher reduction in medical costs of 54.5 % in TJ. Hence, this study proves that implementing pollution prevention and control not only effectively reduced the concentration of pollutants and the risks caused by them, but it also significantly reduced the medical costs of diseases caused by the corresponding exposure. Although air quality guidelines generally use the atmospheric concentration of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) as a metric for air pollution evaluation and management, the fact cannot be ignored that different particle toxicities are unequal and significantly related to their sources and chemical compositions. Therefore, judging the most harmful source and identifying the toxic component would be helpful for optimizing air quality standards and prioritizing targeted PM 2.5 control strategies to protect public health more effectively. Since the combustions of fuels, including oil, coal, and biomass, are the main anthropogenic sources of environmental PM 2.5 , their discrepant contributions to health risks of mixed ambient aerosol pollution dominated by the respective emission intensity and unequal toxicity of chemical components need to be identified. In order to quantify the differences between these combustion primary emissions, 10 types of PM 2.5 from each typical source group, i.e., vehicle exhaust, coal combustion, and plant biomass (domestic biofuel) burning, were collected for comparative study with toxicological mechanisms. In total, 30 types of individual combustion samples were intercompared with representative urban ambient air PM 2.5 samples, whose chemical characteristics and biological effects were investigated by component analysis (carbon, metals, soluble ions) and in vitro toxicity assays (cell viability, oxidative stress, inflammatory response) of human lung adenocarcinoma epithelial cells (A549). Carbonaceous fractions were plenteous in automobile exhaust and biomass burning, while heavy metals were more plentiful in PM 2.5 from coal combustion and automobile exhaust. The overall ranking of mass-normalized cytotoxicity for source-specific PM 2.5 was automobile exhaust > coal combustion > domestic plant biomass burning > ambient urban air, possibly with differential toxicity triggers, and showed that the carbonaceous fractions (organic carbon, OC; elemental carbon, EC) and redox-active transition metals (V, Ni, Cr) assisted by water-soluble ions (Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , F - , Cl -) might play important roles in inducing cellular reactive organic species (ROS) production, causing oxidative stress and inflammation, resulting in cell injury and apoptosis, and thus damaging human health. Coupled with the source apportionment results of typical urban ambient air PM 2.5 in eastern China, reducing toxic PM 2.5 from these anthropogenic combustions will be greatly beneficial to public health. In addition to the air pollution control measures that have been implemented, like strengthening the vehicle emission standards, switching energy from coal to gas and electricity, and controlling the open incineration of agricultural straws, further methods could be considered, especially by preferentially reducing the diesel exhaust, lessening the coal combustion by replacement with low-ash clean coals, and depressing the rural crop straw biomass burning emissions.
