Purpose: The expansion of research across various disciplines has led to a substantial increase in published papers and journals, highlighting the necessity for reliable text mining platforms for database construction and knowledge acquisition. This abstract introduces GPDMiner(Gene, Protein, and Disease Miner), a platform designed for the biomedical domain, addressing the challenges posed by the growing volume of academic papers. Methods: GPDMiner is a text mining platform that utilizes advanced information retrieval techniques. It operates by searching PubMed for specific queries, extracting and analyzing information relevant to the biomedical field. This system is designed to discern and illustrate relationships between biomedical entities obtained from automated information extraction. Results: The implementation of GPDMiner demonstrates its efficacy in navigating the extensive corpus of biomedical literature. It efficiently retrieves, extracts, and analyzes information, highlighting significant connections between genes, proteins, and diseases. The platform also allows users to save their analytical outcomes in various formats, including Excel and images. Conclusion: GPDMiner offers a notable additional functionality among the array of text mining tools available for the biomedical field. This tool presents an effective solution for researchers to navigate and extract relevant information from the vast unstructured texts found in biomedical literature, thereby providing distinctive capabilities that set it apart from existing methodologies. Efficient document recognition and sharing remain challenges in the healthcare, insurance, and finance sectors. One solution to this problem has been the use of deep learning techniques to automatically extract structured information from paper documents. Specifically, the structured extraction of a medical examination report (MER) can enhance medical efficiency, data analysis, and scientific research. While current methods focus on reconstructing table bodies, they often overlook table headers, leading to incomplete information extraction. This paper proposes MSIE-Net (multi-stage-structured information extraction network), a novel structured information extraction method, leveraging refined attention transformers and associated entity detection to enhance comprehensive MER information retrieval. MSIE-Net includes three stages. First, the RVI-LayoutXLM (refined visual-feature independent LayoutXLM) targets key information extraction. In this stage, the refined attention accentuates the interaction between different modalities by adjusting the attention score at the current position using previous position information. This design enables the RVI-LayoutXLM to learn more specific contextual information to improve extraction performance. Next, the associated entity detection module, RIFD-Net (relevant intra-layer fine-tuned detection network), identifies each test item's location within the MER table body. Significantly, the backbone of RIFD-Net incorporates the intra-layer feature adjustment module (IFAM) to extract global features while homing in on local areas, proving especially sensitive for inspection tasks with dense and long bins. Finally, structured post-processing based on coordinate aggregation links the outputs from the prior stages. For the evaluation, we constructed the Chinese medical examination report dataset (CMERD), based on real medical scenarios. MSIE-Net demonstrated competitive performance in tasks involving key information extraction and associated entity detection. Experimental results validate MSIE-Net's capability to successfully detect key entities in MER and table images with various complex layouts, perform entity relation extraction, and generate structured labels, laying the groundwork for intelligent medical documentation. This special issue features the selected works of authors who have presented papers at the 2022 iteration of the Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL) in Cologne, Germany. The motto of the conference was "Bridging Worlds" and was run as a fully hybrid event. Objectives: We conducted a text mining analysis of 40 years of literature on cardiac aging from PubMed to investigate the current understanding on cardiac aging and its mechanisms. This study aimed to embody what most researchers consider cardiac aging to be. Methods: We used multiple text mining and machine learning tools to extract important information from a large amount of text. Results: Analysis revealed that the terms most frequently associated with cardiac aging include "diastolic," "hypertrophy," "fibrosis," "apoptosis," "mitochondrial," "oxidative," and "autophagy." These terms suggest that cardiac aging is characterized by mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and impairment of autophagy, especially mitophagy. We also revealed an increase in the frequency of occurrence of "autophagy" in recent years, suggesting that research on autophagy has made a breakthrough in the field of cardiac aging. Additionally, the frequency of occurrence of "mitophagy" has increased significantly since 2019, suggesting that mitophagy is an important factor in cardiac aging. Conclusions: Cardiac aging is a complex process that involves mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and impairment of autophagy, especially mitophagy. Language models (LMs) such as BERT and GPT have revolutionized natural language processing (NLP). However, the medical field faces challenges in training LMs due to limited data access and privacy constraints imposed by regulations like the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Federated learning (FL) offers a decentralized solution that enables collaborative learning while ensuring data privacy. In this study, we evaluated FL on 2 biomedical NLP tasks encompassing 8 corpora using 6 LMs. Our results show that: (1) FL models consistently outperformed models trained on individual clients' data and sometimes performed comparably with models trained with polled data; (2) with the fixed number of total data, FL models training with more clients produced inferior performance but pre-trained transformer-based models exhibited great resilience. Clinical characteristics of COVID-19 patients have been mostly described in hospitalised patients, yet most are managed in an outpatient setting. The COVID-19 pandemic transformed healthcare delivery models and accelerated the implementation and adoption of telemedicine solutions. We employed a modular remote monitoring system with multi-modal data collection, aggregation, and analytics features to monitor mild COVID-19 patients and report their characteristics and symptoms. At enrolment, the patients were equipped with wearables, which were associated with their accounts, provided the respective in-system consents, and, in parallel, reported the demographics and patient characteristics. The patients monitored their vitals and symptoms daily during a 14-day monitoring period. Vital signs were entered either manually or automatically through wearables. We enrolled 162 patients from February to May 2022. The median age was 51 (42–60) years; 44% were male, 22% had at least one comorbidity, and 73.5% were fully vaccinated. The vitals of the patients were within normal range throughout the monitoring period. Thirteen patients were asymptomatic, while the rest had at least one symptom for a median of 11 (7–16) days. Fatigue was the most common symptom, followed by fever and cough. Loss of taste and smell was the longest-lasting symptom. Age positively correlated with the duration of fatigue, anorexia, and low-grade fever. Comorbidities, the number of administered doses, the days since the last dose, and the days since the positive test did not seem to affect the number of sick days or symptomatology. The i-COVID platform allowed us to provide remote monitoring and reporting of COVID-19 outpatients. We were able to report their clinical characteristics while simultaneously helping reduce the spread of the virus through hospitals by minimising hospital visits. The monitoring platform also offered advanced knowledge extraction and analytic capabilities to detect health condition deterioration and automatically trigger personalised support workflows. Medical imaging AI systems and big data analytics have attracted much attention from researchers of industry and academia. The application of medical imaging AI systems and big data analytics play an important role in the technology of content based remote sensing (CBRS) development. Environmental data, information, and analysis have been produced promptly using remote sensing (RS). The method for creating a useful digital map from an image data set is called image information extraction. Image information extraction depends on target recognition (shape and color). For low-level image attributes like texture, Classifier-based Retrieval(CR) techniques are ineffective since they categorize the input images and only return images from the determined classes of RS. The issues mentioned earlier cannot be handled by the existing expertise based on a keyword/metadata remote sensing data service model. To get over these restrictions, Fuzzy Class Membership-based Image Extraction (FCMIE), a technology developed for Content-Based Remote Sensing (CBRS), is suggested. The compensation fuzzy neural network (CFNN) is used to calculate the category label and fuzzy category membership of the query image. Use a basic and balanced weighted distance metric. Feature information extraction (FIE) enhances remote sensing image processing and autonomous information retrieval of visual content based on time-frequency meaning, such as color, texture and shape attributes of images. Hierarchical nested structure and cyclic similarity measure produce faster queries when searching. The experiment's findings indicate that applying the proposed model can have favorable outcomes for assessment measures, including Ratio of Coverage, average means precision, recall, and efficiency retrieval that are attained more effectively than the existing CR model. In the areas of feature tracking, climate forecasting, background noise reduction, and simulating nonlinear functional behaviors, CFNN has a wide range of RS applications. The proposed method CFNN-FCMIE achieves a minimum range of 4–5% for all three feature vectors, sample mean and comparison precision-recall ratio, which gives better results than the existing classifier-based retrieval model. Clinical narratives commonly use acronyms without explicitly defining their long forms. This makes it difficult to automatically interpret their sense as acronyms tend to be highly ambiguous. Supervised learning approaches to their disambiguation in the clinical domain are hindered by issues associated with patient privacy and manual annotation, which limit the size and diversity of training data. In this study, we demonstrate how scientific abstracts can be utilised to overcome these issues by creating a large automatically annotated dataset of artificially simulated global acronyms. A neural network trained on such a dataset achieved the F1-score of 95% on disambiguation of acronym mentions in scientific abstracts. This network was integrated with multiword term recognition to extract a sense inventory of acronyms from a corpus of clinical narratives on the fly. Acronym sense extraction achieved the F1-score of 74% on a corpus of radiology reports.
