Given a graph G = (V, E), a function f: V → {0, 1, 2, 3, 4} is a triple Roman dominating function (TRDF) of G, for each vertex v ∈ V, (i) if f (v) = 0, then v must have either one neighbour in V4, or either two neighbours in V2 ∪ V3 (one neighbour in V3) or either three neighbours in V2, (ii) if f (v) = 1, then v must have either one neighbour in V3 ∪ V4 or either two neighbours in V2, and if f (v) = 2, then v must have one neighbour in V2 ∪ V3 ∪ V4. The triple Roman domination number of G is the minimum weight of an TRDF f of G, where the weight of f is v V f (v). The triple Roman domination problem is to compute the triple Roman domination number of a given graph. In this paper, we study the triple Roman domination problem. We show that the problem is NP-complete for the star convex bipartite and the comb convex bipartite graphs and is APX-complete for graphs of degree at most 4. We propose a linear-time algorithm for computing the triple Roman domination number of proper interval graphs. We also give an (2H (Δ(G) + 1) - 1)-approximation algorithm for solving the problem for any graph G, where Δ(G) is the maximum degree of G and H (d) denotes the first d terms of the harmonic series. In addition, we prove that for any ε > 0 there is no (1/4 - ε) ln |V |-approximation polynomial-time algorithm for solving the problem on bipartite and split graphs, unless NP ⊆ DTIME (|V |O(log log |V |)). A dominating set of a graph is a subset of vertices such that every vertex not in the subset has at least one neighbor within the subset. The corresponding optimization problem is known to be NP-hard. It is proved to be beneficial to separate the solution process in two stages. First, one can apply a fast greedy algorithm to obtain an initial dominating set and then use an iterative procedure to purify (reduce) the size of this dominating set. In this work, we develop the purification stage and propose new purification algorithms. The purification procedures that we present here outperform, in practice, the earlier known purification procedure. We have tested our algorithms for over 1300 benchmark problem instances. Compared to the estimations due to known upper bounds, the obtained solutions are about seven times better. Remarkably, for the 500 benchmark instances for which the optimum is known, the optimal solutions are obtained for 46.33% of the tested instances, whereas the average error for the remaining instances is about 1.01. Theoretical studies on evolutionary algorithms have developed vigorously in recent years. Many such algorithms have theoretical guarantees in both running time and approximation ratio. Some approximation mechanism seems to be inherently embedded in many evolutionary algorithms. In this paper, we identify such a relation by proposing a unified analysis framework for a global simple multiobjective evolutionary algorithm (GSEMO) and apply it on a minimum weight general cover problem, which is general enough to subsume many important problems including the minimum submodular cover problem in which the submodular function is real-valued, and the minimum connected dominating set problem for which the potential function is nonsubmodular. We show that GSEMO yields theoretically guaranteed approximation ratios matching those achievable by a greedy algorithm in expected polynomial time when the potential function g is polynomial in the input size and the minimum gap between different g-values is a constant. A dominator coloring of a graph G is a proper vertex coloring with a domination property that each vertex dominates a color class. The minimum number of colors used in a dominator coloring of G is called dominator chromatic number of G and is denoted as χ d (G). Graphs with χ d (G) ≤ 3 have characterizations and such graphs can be recognized in polynomial time. However, for k ≥ 4 , deciding whether χ d (G) ≤ k is NP-hard. In this paper, we investigate the computational complexity of minimum q -dominator partization problem (Min- q -D-Partz). In Min- q -D-Partz, given a graph G , the objective is to find a vertex set S of minimum size such that χ d (G [ V ∖ S ]) ≤ q. We prove that Min- 2 -D-Partz is APX-complete and has a two-factor approximation algorithm. We also prove that Min- 3 -D-Partz cannot be approximated within any constant factor and can be approximated within a factor of O (log n). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Benefitting from the maturation of Wireless Power Transfer technology, Wireless Rechargeable Sensor Networks have become a promising solution for prolonging network lifetime. In practical charging scenarios, obstacles are ubiquitous. However, most prior arts have failed to consider the combined impacts of the material, size, and location of obstacles on the charging performance, making these schemes unsuitable for real applications. In this article, we study a fundamental issue of Wireless chArger placement wIth obsTacles (WAIT), that is, how to place wireless chargers by comprehensively considering these parameters of obstacles, such that the overall charging utility is maximized. To tackle theWAIT problem, we first build a practical charging model with obstacles by introducing shadow fading, and conduct experiments to verify its correctness. Then, we design a piecewise constant function to approximate the nonlinear charging power. Afterwards, we develop a Dominating Coverage Set extraction algorithm to reduce the continuous solution space to a limited number. Finally, we prove the WAIT problem is a maximizing monotone submodular function problem, and propose a 1-1/e - ε approximation algorithm to address it. Extensive simulations and field experiments show that our scheme outperforms comparison algorithms by at least 20.6% in charging utility improvement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

K-best enumeration , which asks to output k -best solutions without duplication, is a helpful tool in data analysis for many fields. In such fields, graphs typically represent data. Thus subgraph enumeration has been paid much attention to such fields. However, k -best enumeration tends to be intractable since, in many cases, finding one optimum solution is NP-hard. To overcome this difficulty, we combine k -best enumeration with a concept of enumeration algorithms called approximation enumeration algorithms. As a main result, we propose a 4-approximation algorithm for minimal connected edge dominating sets which outputs k minimal solutions with cardinality at most 4 ⋅ OPT ‾ , where OPT ‾ is the cardinality of a minimum solution which is not outputted by the algorithm. Damian and Pemmaraju (2002) [8] introduced leaf sector covers for circle graphs and presented an O (n 2) -time algorithm to find this data structure. They subsequently employed it as an algorithmic tool, leading to the development of an 8-approximation algorithm for the dominating set problem, a (2 + ε) -approximation scheme for the dominating set problem, and a (3 + ε) -approximation scheme for the total dominating set problem. In this paper, we have improved the time complexity from O (n 2) to O (n + m) for finding a leaf sector cover. Furthermore, we employed leaf sector covers as a powerful algorithmic tool to design a 10-approximation algorithm for the total dominating set problem and a 12-approximation algorithm for the paired-dominating set problem. Moreover, we also proposed a (2 + ε) -approximation scheme for the total dominating set problem and a (4 + ε) -approximation scheme for the paired-dominating set problem. We consider 2-connectivity network design problems in which we are given a graph and seek a min-size 2-connected subgraph that satisfies a prescribed property. • In the 1 -Connectivity Augmentation problem the goal is to augment a connected graph by a minimum size edge subset of a specified edge set such that the augmented graph is 2-connected. We breach the natural approximation ratio 2 for this problem, and also for the more general Crossing Family Cover problem. • In the 2 -Connected Dominating Set problem, we seek a minimum size 2-connected subgraph that dominates all nodes. We give the first non-trivial approximation algorithm with expected approximation ratio O (σ (n) ⋅ log 3 ⁡ n) , where σ (n) = O (log ⁡ n ⋅ log ⁡ log ⁡ n ⋅ (log ⁡ log ⁡ log ⁡ n) 3). The unifying technique of both results is a reduction to the Subset Steiner Connected Dominating Set problem. Such a reduction was known for edge-connectivity, and we extend it to 2-node connectivity problems. For a graph G = (V , E) without an isolated edge, a set D ⊆ E is an edge total dominating set of G if every edge e ∈ E is adjacent to at least one edge of D. The Minimum Edge Total Dominating Set problem is to compute a minimum cardinality edge total dominating set of G. It is known that the decision version of the problem is NP-complete for bipartite graphs, chordal graphs, and planar graphs. On the positive side, the problem is efficiently solvable for trees. In this paper, we further study the complexity of this problem in other graph classes. We design a linear-time algorithm to compute a minimum cardinality edge total dominating set in chain graphs, a subclass of bipartite graphs. We also propose linear-time algorithms for two subclasses of chordal graphs, namely, split graphs and proper interval graphs with no cut vertices. In addition, we show that the problem is APX-complete for graphs with maximum degree 3 and propose an approximation algorithm for the problem in k -regular graphs, where k ≥ 4.
