This paper explores the implementation of Internet of Things (IoT) technology to create a remote-control system for electrical equipment in households. The system offers a unified interface for managing various home appliances, including lights, vertical curtains, and air conditioning units. A private network infrastructure supports a personal cloud service, enabling remote access to appliance controls through the internet. The primary objective of this study is to enhance energy efficiency within households by facilitating convenient and remote management of electrical devices. Through the IoT framework, users can monitor and adjust appliance settings based on environmental conditions, accessed through a web server and user-friendly web applications or smartphone interfaces. Key findings of this paper include the real-time monitoring of electrical parameters through web applications, providing insights into energy usage patterns and opportunities for optimization. By leveraging IoT technology, homeowners can reduce energy consumption and contribute to environmental sustainability while enjoying improved convenience in appliance management. This study underscores the importance of integrating IoT solutions into household infrastructure to promote energy conservation and enhance overall efficiency. Background and Objectives: Today, the increased number of Internet-connected smart devices require powerful computer processing servers such as cloud and fog and necessitate fulfilling requests and services more than ever before. The geographical distance of IoT devices to fog and cloud servers have turned issues such as delay and energy consumption into major challenges. However, fog computing technology has emerged as a promising technology in this field. Methods: In this paper, service/energy management approaches are generally surveyed. Then, we explain our motivation for the systematic literature review procedure (SLR) and how to select the related works. Results: This paper introduces four domains of service management and energy management, including Architecture, Resource Management, Scheduling management, and Service Management. Scheduling management has been used in 38% of the papers. Therefore, they have the highest service management and energy management. Also, Resource Management is the second domain that has been able to attract about 26% of the papers in service management and energy management. Conclusion: About 81% of the fog computing papers simulated their approaches, and the others implemented their schemes using a testbed in the real environment. Furthermore, 30% of the papers presented an architecture or framework for their research, along with their research. In this systematic literature review, papers have been extracted from five valid databases, including IEEE Xplore, Wiley, Science Direct (Elsevier), Springer Link, and Taylor & Francis, from 2013 to 2022. We obtained 1596 papers related to the discussed subject. We filtered them and achieved 47 distinct studies. In the following, we analyze and discuss these studies; then we review the parameters of service quality in the papers, and ultimately, we present the benefits, drawbacks, and innovations of each study. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a technological paradigm that has gained significant momentum the last decade and, among other features, enables the development of intelligent and interoperable device networks. In this respect, it has triggered the creation and evolution of vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs), which are initially implemented in order to guarantee the safety of drivers and the avoidance of traffic accidents. The drawback is that this fast evolution comes with serious concerns in terms of the privacy of users, while the population of attackers or entities that try to eavesdrop and intercept information has significantly increased. This imposes a serious risk for drivers moving across a Smart City. The research presented in this paper aims to evaluate privacy protection mechanisms in VANET environments, based on the efficiency and security level they ensure, considering the fact that VANETs provide limited resources to users/drivers. Moreover, the usage of elliptic curve cryptography in reduced resources environments is discussed. Finally, this paper compares the performance of three cryptographic algorithms, elliptic curve cryptography (ECC), hyperelliptic curve cryptography genus 2 (HECC-2) and HECC genus 3 (HECC-3), employed for an efficient authentication and safe message transmission mechanism in VANETs, aimed at reaching conclusions related to the implementation of each cryptographic scheme in this specific application area. The evaluation results indicate that ECC supersedes HECC-2 and HECC-3 in most metrics. However, HECC-2 and HECC-3 demonstrate better responses than ECC does in selected energy metrics. Overall, it is observed that HECC algorithms are not yet mature enough to compete with ECC. This is due to the fact that the research community has not sufficiently progressed toward the optimization of HECC, and moreover, HECC builds on quite complex mathematics. There are indications, however, that once HECC curves are indeed optimized, HECC will outperform ECC in speed as well as in other metrics, sinceHECC-2 and HECC-3 use a significantly smaller key size with the same level of security as that of ECC. In the era of continuous development in Internet of Things (IoT) technology, smart services are penetrating various facets of societal life, leading to a growing demand for interconnected devices. Many contemporary devices are no longer mere data producers but also consumers of data. As a result, massive amounts of data are transmitted to the cloud, but the latency generated in edge-to-cloud communication is unacceptable for many tasks. In response to this, this paper introduces a novel contribution—a layered computing network built on the principles of fog computing, accompanied by a newly devised algorithm designed to optimize user tasks and allocate computing resources within rechargeable networks. The proposed algorithm, a synergy of Lyapunov-based, dynamic Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), allows for predictive task allocation. The fog servers dynamically train LSTM networks to effectively forecast the data features of user tasks, facilitating proper unload decisions based on task priorities. In response to the challenge of slower hardware upgrades in edge devices compared to user demands, the algorithm optimizes the utilization of low-power devices and addresses performance limitations. Additionally, this paper considers the unique characteristics of rechargeable networks, where computing nodes acquire energy through charging. Utilizing Lyapunov functions for dynamic resource control enables nodes with abundant resources to maximize their potential, significantly reducing energy consumption and enhancing overall performance. The simulation results demonstrate that our algorithm surpasses traditional methods in terms of energy efficiency and resource allocation optimization. Despite the limitations of prediction accuracy in Fog Servers (FS), the proposed results significantly promote overall performance. In the face of our rapidly expanding global population, the necessity of meeting the fundamental needs of every individual is more pressing than ever. Human survival depends upon access to water, making it a vital resource that demands novel solutions to ensure universal availability. Although our planet is abundant in water, 97.5% of it is saltwater, compelling nations to investigate ways to make it suitable for consumption. Seawater desalination is becoming increasingly vital for water sustainability. While seawater desalination offers a solution, existing methods often grapple with high energy consumption and maintaining consistent water quality. This paper proposes a novel hybrid water desalination system that addresses these limitations. Our system leverages solar energy, a readily available renewable resource, to power the desalination process, significantly improving its environmental footprint and operational efficiency. Additionally, we integrated a network of sensors and the Internet of Things (IoT) to enable the real-time monitoring of system performance and water quality. This allows for the immediate detection and improvement in any potential issues, ensuring the consistent production of clean drinking water. By combining solar energy with robust quality control via IoT, our hybrid desalination system offers a sustainable and reliable approach to meet the growing demand for freshwater. It is well known that buildings have a sizeable energy and environmental footprint. In particular, in environments like university campuses, the occupants as well as occupancy in shared spaces varies over time. Systems for cooling in such environments that are centrally controlled are typically threshold driven and do not account for occupant feedback and thus are often relying on a reactive approach (fix after identifying problems). Therefore, having a fixed thermal operating set point may not be optimal in such cases—both from an occupant comfort and well-being as well as an energy efficiency perspective. To address this issue, a study was conducted which involved development and deployment of an experimental Internet of Things (IoT) prototype system and an Android application that facilitated people engagement on a university campus located in the UAE which typically exhibits hot climatic conditions. This paper showcases data driven insights obtained from this study, and in particular, how to achieve a balance between the conflicting goals of improving occupant comfort and energy efficiency. Findings from this study underscore the need for regular reassessments and adaptation. The proposed solution is low cost and easy to deploy and has the potential to reap significant savings through a reduction in energy consumption with estimates indicating around 50–100 kWh/day of savings per building and the resulting environmental impact. These findings would appeal to stakeholders who are keen to improve energy efficiency and reduce their operating expenses and environmental footprint in such climatic conditions. Wireless sensor network (WSN) underpinning the smart-grid Internet of Things (SG-IoT) has been a popular research topic in recent years due to its great potential for enabling a wide range of important applications. However, the energy consumption (EC) characteristic of sensor nodes is a key factor that affects the operational performance (e.g., lifetime of sensors) and the total cost of ownership of WSNs. In this paper, to find the modulation techniques suitable for WSNs, we investigate the EC characteristic of continuous phase modulation (CPM), which is an attractive modulation scheme candidate for WSNs because of its constant envelope property. We first develop an EC model for the sensor nodes of WSNs by considering the circuits and a typical communication protocol that relies on automatic repeat request (ARQ)-based retransmissions to ensure successful data delivery. Then, we use this model to analyze the EC characteristic of CPM under various configurations of modulation parameters. Furthermore, we compare the EC characteristic of CPM with that of other representative modulation schemes, such as offset quadrature phase-shift keying (OQPSK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), which are commonly used in communication protocols of WSNs. Our analysis and simulation results provide insights into the EC characteristics of multiple modulation schemes in the context of WSNs; thus, they are beneficial for designing energy-efficient SG-IoT in the beyond-5G (B5G) and the 6G era. The global energy sector is currently undergoing a significant transformation to address sustainability, energy efficiency, and grid resilience. Smart grids, leveraging advanced technologies like the power internet of things (PIoT), play a crucial role in this transformation. This research focuses on enhancing the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of electricity distribution through IoT technologies. It envisions a system where interconnected devices, sensors, and data analytics optimize energy consumption, monitor grid conditions, and manage demand response scenarios. Central to this effort is the integration of PIoT into the smart grid infrastructure, particularly in implementing dynamic pricing strategies for demand response. Leveraging power line communication (PLC) techniques, this innovative approach facilitates real-time communication between grid components and consumers. The results demonstrate improved grid stability through dynamic load management, effectively responding to demand fluctuations, and minimizing disruptions. The deployment of dynamic pricing methods using PLC-driven schemes empowers customers by offering access to real-time energy use data. This access incentivizes energy-efficient behavior. leading to a 30% increase in the adoption of energy-saving techniques among consumers. The extensive utilization of IoT applications leads to the aggregation of a substantial volume of data, presenting a crucial challenge in terms of data routing within these networks. RPL intentionally surpasses the limitations sometimes observed in low-power and lossy networks, which are particularly prevalent in IoT networks. The RPL protocol is designed specifically for static networks that do not involve mobility or topological changes. The RPL protocol guarantees continuous connectivity between nodes and mitigates the risk of data loss in stationary IoT applications that do not involve mobility or alterations in network configuration. The article utilizes a mobility aid technology known as network performance stability using the intelligent routing protocol (nPSIR), which expands upon RPL. The Mobility Support Entity (nPSIR) facilitates the displacement of all nodes, with the exception of the root node, and ensures uninterrupted connection during mobility. Moreover, it deals with the situation where there is a physical barrier between two interconnected nodes in a changing environment. In order to achieve this objective, it employs a dynamic trickle timer that operates within two distinct ranges. Furthermore, it utilizes a neighbor link quality table, a mechanism for selecting the most beneficial parent node in the event of migration, a measure of confidence, the identification of crucial regions, and a blacklist. Multiple simulations validate that nPSIR effectively decreases hand-off delay and improves packet delivery, despite the minor drawbacks of increased signaling costs and power consumption. Long Range (LoRa) as a low-power wide-area technology is distinguished by its robust long-distance communications tailored for Internet of Things (IoT) networks. Because LoRa was primarily designed for stationary devices, when applied to mobile devices, they become susceptible to frequent channel attenuation. Such a condition can result in packet loss, higher energy consumption, and extended transmission times. To address these inherent challenges posed by mobility, we propose an adaptive mobility-based IoT LoRa clustering communication (AMILCC) scheme, which employs the 2D random waypoint mobility model, strategically partitions the network into optimal spreading factor (SF) regions, and incorporates an adaptive clustering approach. The AMILCC scheme is bolstered by a hybrid adaptive data rate (HADR) mechanism categorized into two approaches, namely intra-SF and inter-SF region HADRs, derived from the standard network-based ADR mechanism for stationary devices, to ensure efficient resource allocation for mobile IoT LoRa devices. Evaluation results show that, based on simulations at low mobility speeds of up to 5 m/s, AMILCC successfully maximizes the packet success ratio to the gateway (GW) by over 70%, reduces energy consumption by an average of 55.5%, and minimizes the end-to-end delay by 47.62%, outperforming stationary schemes. The integration of new Internet of Things (IoT) applications and services heavily relies on task offloading to external devices due to the constrained computing and battery resources of IoT devices. Up to now, Cloud Computing (CC) paradigm has been a good approach for tasks where latency is not critical, but it is not useful when latency matters, so Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) can be of use. In this work, we propose a distributed Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) tool to optimize the binary task offloading decision, this is, the independent decision of where to execute each computing task, depending on many factors. The optimization goal in this work is to maximize the Quality-of-Experience (QoE) when performing tasks, which is defined as a metric related to the battery level of the UE, but subject to satisfying tasks' latency requirements. This distributed DRL approach, specifically an Actor-Critic (AC) algorithm running on each User Equipment (UE), is evaluated through the simulation of two distinct scenarios and outperforms other analyzed baselines in terms of QoE values and/or energy consumption in dynamic environments, also demonstrating that decisions need to be adapted to the environment's evolution. Applications for the internet of things (IoT) have grown significantly in popularity in recent years, and this has caused a huge increase in the use of cloud services (CSs). In addition, cloud computing (CC) effciently processes and stores generated application data, which is evident in the lengthened response times of sensitive applications. Moreover, CC bandwidth limitations and power consumption are still unresolved issues. In order to balance CC, fog computing (FC) has been developed. FC broadens its offering of CSs to target end users and edge devices. Due to its low processing capability, FC only handles light activities; jobs that require more time will be done via CC. This study presents an alternative task scheduling in an IoT environment based on improving the performance of the golden jackal optimization (GJO) using the artificial hummingbird algorithm (AHA). To test the effectiveness of the developed task scheduling technique named golden jackal artificial hummingbird (GJAH), we conducted a large number of experiments on two separate datasets with varying data sizing. The GJAH algorithm provides better performance than those competitive task scheduling methods. In particular, GJAH can schedule and carry out activities more effectively than other algorithms to reduce the makespan time and energy consumption in a cloud-fog computing environment. It is estimated that over 125 billion heterogeneous and homogeneous Internet of Things (IoT) devices will be internet-connected by 2030. This significant increase will generate large data volumes, posing a global problem for Cloud–Fog computing infrastructures. The current literature uses synthetic data in the iFogSim2 simulation toolkit; however, this study bridges the gap using real-world data to reflect and address the real-world issue. Smart IoT device data are captured, compared, and evaluated in a fixed and scalable scenario at both the Cloud and Fog layers, demonstrating the improved benefits achievable in energy consumption, latency, and network bandwidth usage within a smart office building. Real-world IoT device data evaluation results demonstrate that Fog computing is more efficient than Cloud computing, with increased scalability and data volume in a fixed- and low-bandwidth smart building architecture. This indicates a direct correlation between the increase in devices and the increase in efficiency within a scalable scenario, while the fixed architecture overall shows the inverse due to the low device numbers used in this study. The results indicate improved energy savings and significant improvements of up to 84.41% and 38.95% in network latency and usage, respectively, within a fixed architecture, while scalability analysis demonstrates improvements up to 4%, 91.38% and 34.78% for energy, latency, and network usage, respectively. Fog computing improvements are limited within a fixed smart building architecture with relatively few IoT devices.
