Many plant materials in nature have the ability to change their shape to respond to external stimuli, such as humidity or moisture, to ensure their survival or safe seed release. A well-known example for this phenomenon is the pinecone, which is able to open its scales at low humidity due to the specific bilayer structures of the scale. Inspired by this, we developed a novel humidity-driven actuator based on paper. This was realized by the lamination of untreated paper made from eucalyptus fibers to a paper–carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) composite. As observed, the hygroexpansion of the composite can be easily controlled by the amount of CMC in the impregnated paper sheet, which, thus, controls the morphologic deformation of the paper bilayer. For a more detailed understanding of these novel paper soft robots, we also studied the dynamic water vapor adsorption, polymer distribution and hygroexpansion of the paper–polymer composites. Finally, we applied a geometrically nonlinear finite element model to predict the bending behavior of paper bilayers and compared the results to experimental data. The Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) performances are strongly impacted by the compression of the Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL). Despite its fibrous microstructure, this material is usually considered as a continuous medium and characterized with uniform loading. However, the GDL is subjected to a heterogeneous compression onto rib/channel patterns in the fuel cell assembly. In the present study, a complex behavior of the GDL response is experimentally revealed when the material is loaded with a rib/channel pattern, compared to uniform compression. The tests are simulated by finite element modeling using a classical strain-dependent elastic law, using parameters fitted from uniform compression experiments. It is shown that the numerical results do not reproduce the effect of pattern observed experimentally. Hypotheses to interpret these results involve mechanisms at the fiber microscale including fiber fracture, cross-link breakage and fiber rearrangement, which are exacerbated by larger material deformation caused by the heterogeneous loading. • Unexpected impact of rib/channel patterns on GDL compression. • Experimental investigation of the effect of rib/channel width on GDL deformation. • Numerical study with classical model unable to reproduce experimental results. • Interpretations based on mechanisms at the fiber microscale. The potential of paper and paperboard as fiber-based materials capable of replacing conventional polymer-based materials has been widely investigated and evaluated. Due to paper's limited extensibility and inherent heterogeneity, local structural variations lead to unpredictable local mechanical behavior and instability during processing, such as mechanical forming. To gain a deeper understanding of the impact of mechanical behavior and heterogeneity on the paper forming process, the Finite Element Method (FEM) coupled with continuum modeling is being explored as a potential approach to enhance comprehension. To achieve this goal, utilizing experimentally derived material parameters alongside stochastic finite element methods allows for more precise modeling of material behavior, considering the local material properties. This work first introduces the approach of modeling heterogeneity or local material structure within continuum models, such as the Stochastic Finite Element Method (SFEM). A fundamental challenge lies in accurately measuring these local material properties. Experimental investigations are being conducted to numerically simulate mechanical behavior. An overview is provided of experimental methods for material characterization, as found in literature, with a specific focus on measuring local mechanical material structure. The present article provides a comprehensive analysis of the aging phenomenon of transformer insulation and the corresponding changes in insulation performance that occur over time. The present manuscript outlines diverse insulating materials that are employed in transformers, the fundamental aging mechanism of the insulation, the function of space charges in the aging of the insulation, and various simulation methodologies utilized for diagnosing the insulation status of the transformer. The primary focus of this paper is to examine the various numerical techniques employed in modeling and analyzing the aging characteristics of transformer insulation. The mechanisms underlying the accumulation of charge and distortion of electric fields in insulation are explained through the utilization of numerical modeling techniques. This paper focuses on understanding the mechanism of insulation aging, thereby facilitating the optimization and maintenance of insulation performance throughout its operational lifespan. Alumina-based multilayer laminates with layers of varied porosities and ceramic fiber reinforcements, which can be achieved by including paper-derived ceramic layers, are interesting candidates for chemically stable and thermal shock resistant materials. In order to investigate the complex sintering behavior of these laminates, the sintering of each alumina layer contained within a laminate, each one with its individual sintering anisotropy and sintering shrinkage, has to be considered separately. For this purpose, sintering curves are determined by dilatometry measurements, serving a consecutive examination by an analytical model. Modeling parameters specific to each layer, are applied in finite-element-type sintering simulations for symmetrical multilayer laminates. Differences in the sintering shrinkages may cause internal stresses at layer interfaces and, in turn, may influence the thermal and mechanical properties of multilayer laminates after sintering. Accordingly, the prediction of developing internal stresses within alumina-based multilayer laminates by the presented sintering simulations is a key aspect of this study. The dynamic mechanical behavior and cushioning performance of honeycomb sandwich panels, which are extensively employed in product cushioning packaging due to their exceptional energy absorption capabilities, were examined using a combination of experimental and numerical methods. Several factors, such as maximum acceleration–static stress, cushioning coefficient–static stress, and other curves, were analyzed under various impact conditions. The simulated stress–strain, deformation modes, cushioning coefficients, and other parameters demonstrate consistency with the experimental results. The acceleration, maximum compression, and cushioning coefficient obtained from the experiment and simulation calculation were 30.68 g, 15.44 mm, and 2.65, and 31.96 g, 14.91 mm, and 2.79, respectively. The results indicate that all error values were less than 5%, confirming the precision and reliability of the model. Furthermore, the model was utilized to simulate and predict the cushioning performance of honeycomb sandwich panels with different cell structures and paper thicknesses. These results provide a solid basis for enhancing the design of subsequent honeycomb element structures.

Paper, a porous-fibrous network, is made up of hydrophilic fibres, which are notably susceptible to deformations due to variations in moisture content. The response of paper sheets to full or partial wetting, based on the water-induced fibre swelling, has mostly been predicted in the past using highly idealised two-dimensional network geometries. The purpose of the present paper is to establish how precisely the two-stage process of determining effective hygro-expansivity under uniform wetting by a two-dimensional model followed by bending analysis using a continuum model predicts the curl of a fully three-dimensional network. In the present multi-scale modelling work, the moisture-induced homogenised sheet scale curl, derived from hygro-elastic deformations using non-uniform moisture profiles, is analysed based on an idealised non-woven three-dimensional fibrous network finite element model. First, the effective paper sheet swelling properties, derived computationally for the uniform wetting condition, are compared with analytically homogenised hygro-elastic properties. Whereas the analytically predicted elastic modulus has an inaccuracy of only ∼ 5%, the hygro-expansivity coefficient is over-predicted by roughly a third for a network with straight fibres. The difference is smaller if waviness of the fibres and wrap-around in the fibre bonds are taken into account. Fibre alignment turns out to have little influence. Subsequently, paper sheet curl predictions made by the analytical model are compared with that computed from the three-dimensional network model. The inaccuracy of the fully analytical model, based on the two-dimensional network description, relative to the fully detailed three-dimensional computational model with straight fibres is on the order of 40%–50%. The fidelity of the simple model is primarily constrained by the inaccuracy of the effective hygro-expansion coefficient. If the expansivity extracted from the three-dimensional simulations under uniform wetting is inserted, the inaccuracy drops to less than 10%. The concept of digital twins in bridge engineering is still vague and even confused with the Bridge Information Model (BrIM). Therefore, this study provides a detailed review of 42 papers related to digital twins in bridge engineering, focusing on a proper definition, key features and creation techniques for bridge digital twin (BDT). The paper also compares BDT and BrIM from the perspectives of their elements, features, fidelity, services provided, and degree of development. The applications of BDT at different life cycle stages are identified, and the related technologies are analyzed in detail. The results show that the research clusters of BDT are divided into geometric model generation, finite element model updating, and management and are focused on the operation and maintenance phase while lacking attention in the design and construction phase. Strain sensors which are embeded in AMOLED are introduced and studied in this paper. High accuray strain sensing are achieved, resolution of the sensors are about 0.05%. By combing the strain sensors in the panel, mechanical behaviors can be monitored and studied in real time. The snesors are used to conduct the foldable AMOLED mechanical and reliability study. Dynamic and static strains and related mechanism are introduced and discussed. Finite element simulation models considering the mechanical properties of materials including hyperelasticity, viscoelasticity and creep are established. Finally, the strain sensors and finite element anlysis are combined to study the mechanical response of AMOLED under dynamic folding, static folding, and different temperature and humidity environments. With the rapid proliferation of portable and wearable electronics, energy autonomy through efficient energy harvesting has become paramount. Thermoelectric generators (TEGs) stand out as promising candidates due to their silent operation, high reliability, and maintenance-free nature. This paper presents the design, fabrication, and analysis of a micro-scale TEG for powering such devices. A planar configuration was employed for its inherent miniaturization advantages. Finite element analysis using ANSYS reveals that a double-layer device under a 50 K temperature gradient generates an impressive open-circuit voltage of 1417 mV and a power output of 2.4 μW, significantly exceeding its single-layer counterpart (226 mV, 0.12 μW). Validation against the analytical model results yields errors within 2.44% and 2.03% for voltage and power, respectively. Furthermore, a single-layer prototype fabricated using paper shadow masks and sputtering deposition exhibits a voltage of 131 mV for a 50 K temperature difference, thus confirming the feasibility of the proposed design. Purpose: This paper aims to compare and evaluate the influence of package designs and characteristics on the mechanical reliability of electronic assemblies when subjected to harmonic vibrations. Design/methodology/approach: Using finite element analysis (FEA), the effect of package design-related parameters, including the interconnect array configuration, i.e. full vs perimeter, and package size, on solder mechanical stresses are fully addressed. Findings: The results of FEA simulations revealed that the number of solder rows or columns available in the array, could significantly affect solder stresses. In addition, smaller packages result in lower solder stresses and differing distributions. Originality/value: In literature, there are no papers that discuss the effect of solder array layout on electronic packages vibration reliability. When the converter transformer core is grounded at multi-points, a fault loop will be formed and a circulation will be generated, leading to local overheating of the magnetic core and decomposition of insulating oil. Therefore, the converter transformer core will be single point grounded. As a rare internal lead of converter transformer, the ground current on the core ground lead can often reflect the running state of converter transformer. In this paper, theoretical analysis, modeling simulation and experimental research are carried out on the ground current of converter transformer at one point. Firstly, according to the structure characteristics of converter transformer, the analytical modeling of ground current is carried out. Secondly, based on the structure characteristics of oil paper insulation, the equivalent capacitance of converter transformer is calculated. Then, the analytical and finite element simulation model of converter transformer is established, and the ground current of converter transformer is calculated. The pressure on a horse's back can affect their performance during the equestrian competition. A better pressure distribution on the surface of the horse's back can be obtained using a custom saddle, considering the rider's weight and back anatomy. The first part of the paper presents a recent study regarding the mathematical and CAD methods used to generate the hyperbolic paraboloid of the saddle surface. The second part of the paper shows the saddle design modelled using CAD software. The horse's back and rider's anatomy stay at the base of the saddle's surface. The saddle surface is divided into several areas for a better and more accurate evaluation. The third part of the paper presents the saddle evaluation using the finite elements method, using two load simulation cases in different rider situations. The subject of the paper is the modelling of multi-bolted connections that are at the pretensioning stage. Taking a systematic approach to the modelling issue, the connection was treated as a composite of four subsystems: a bolt set, a pair of joined elements and a contact layer between them. The first part of the paper describes experimental studies to determine the contact stiffness of a pair of elements separated from an exemplary asymmetric multi-bolted connection. The normal loading and unloading direction of the contact joint was considered. The tests were performed with the use of an INSTRON 8850 servo-hydraulic testing machine equipped with an extensometer. A normal stiffness characteristic in the form of an exponential function was proposed for the tested contact joint. The umbilical cable is a vital component of subsea production systems that provide power, chemical agents, control signals et al., and its requirement for reliability is exceedingly high. However, as the umbilical cable is a composite structure comprising multiple functional units, the reliability analysis of such cables involves numerous parameters that can impact calculation efficiency. In this paper, the reliability analysis of a new kind of umbilical cable with carbon fiber rod under tension is analyzed. The global dynamic analytical model is first established to determine the maximum tension load, then the local analytical model of umbilical cable including each unit are constructed by finite element method (FEM). Based on the mechanical analytical model, the reliability of umbilical cable under tension load is studied using response surface method (RSM) and Monte Carlo method. During the calculation process, a new tangent plane sampling method to calculate the response surface function (RSF) is proposed in this paper, which could make sampling points faster come close to the RSF curve, and it is proved that the calculation efficiency increases about 33% comparing with traditional method. Featured Application: Determining Young's modulus is an important step in the analysis of any material that undergoes elastic deformation. A quick estimation of it can be performed using the finite element method (FEM) with the procedure presented in this paper. Knowing the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced composite materials, which are currently widely used in various industrial branches, represents a major objective for designers. This happens when new materials are used that are not yet in production or for which the manufacturer cannot give values. Given the practical importance of this problem, several methods of determining these properties have been proposed, but most of them are laborious and require a long calculation time. And, some of the proposed calculation methods are very approximate, providing only upper and lower limits for these values. Experimental measurements are obviously the optimal solution for solving this problem, but it must be taken into account that this type of method consumes time and material resources. This paper proposes a sufficiently accurate and fast estimation method for determining Young's modulus for a homogenized fibrous material. Thus, the FEM is used to determine the natural frequencies of a standard bar, for which there are sufficiently precise classical methods to express the engineering constants according to the mechanical properties of the component phases of the homogenized material. In this paper, Young's modulus is determined for such a material using the relationships that provide the eigenfrequencies for the longitudinal vibrations. With the adopted model, transverse and torsional vibrations are eliminated by blocking the nodes on the surfaces of the bars. This paper calculates and analyses electric fields generated by high-voltage overhead power transmission lines. These fields have significant implications for safety and design considerations. The study utilises a numerical technique to determine the electric field distribution in regions containing multiple charges. Based on this method, a computer program is developed to calculate the electric field profile at ground level and two meters above ground level for both 400 kV overhead power lines. The results demonstrate the method's effectiveness in accurately computing the electric field intensity for various line configurations, making it applicable to any power line design. The paper also highlights the potential health effects associated with exposure to these electric fields, including leukaemia, breast cancer, cognitive impairments, and reproductive consequences. The proposed method can also be applied to other transmission lines, providing valuable insights into health considerations. The accuracy of the computation methods is validated using the finite element analysis method. This research contributes to the understanding and assessing ground-level electric fields, offering industry professionals and researchers valuable insights into the safety and design of power transmission systems. The arrangement of eccentric bracing has a significant impact on the seismic performance of structures. However, there is no further stipulation on different forms of eccentric bracing in the current Chinese code. At the same time, there is a lack of research on the seismic loss of eccentrically braced structures by Chinese domestic scholars. Therefore, this paper designs different forms of eccentrically braced frames and analyzes them according to the concept of seismic engineering based on performance, which provides some reference for the selection of the eccentrically braced steel frame structure layout in future engineering practice. In this paper, K-shaped, V-shaped, and D-shaped eccentrically braced steel frame structures with 3, 5, and 8 floors are designed, and the finite element analysis model is used for static napping and dynamic time history analysis. The results show that the K-shaped eccentrically braced structure has the best performance in bearing capacity and stiffness and has good seismic and collapse resistance performance. In the FEMA P-58 seismic assessment and vulnerability assessment, it is found that the V-shaped eccentrically braced structure has the smallest loss. However, it is necessary to fully consider the acceleration sensitivity of the non-structural components in the design. In general, the seismic performance of the eccentrically braced structure is improved by the energy dissipation beam yielding to consume energy, which provides a useful reference for structural design. Purpose: In power electronics, there are various metallic material systems used as die attachments. The complete understanding of the thermomechanical behavior of such interconnections is very important. Therefore, this paper aims to examine the thermomechanical response of four famous die attach materials, including sintered silver, sintered nano-copper particles, gold-tin solders and silver-tin transient liquid phase (TLP) bonds, using nonlinear finite element analysis. Design/methodology/approach: During the study, the mechanical properties of all die attach systems, including elastic and viscoplasticity parameters, are obtained from literature studies and hence incorporated into the numerical analysis. Subsequently, the bond stress–strain relationships, stored inelastic strain energies and equivalent plastic strains are thoroughly examined. Findings: The results showed that the silver-tin TLP bonds are more likely to develop higher inelastic strain energy densities, while the sintered silver and copper interconnects would possess higher plastic strains and deformations. Suggesting higher damage to such metallic die attachments. The expensive gold-based solders have developed least inelastic strain energy densities and least plastic strains as well. Thus, they are expected to have improved fatigue performance compared to other bonding configurations. Originality/value: This paper extensively investigates and compares the mechanical and thermal response of various metallic die attachments. In fact, there are no available research studies that discuss the behavior of such important die attachments of power electronics when exposed to mechanical and thermomechanical loads. This article presents the characteristics of four straw-filled beetle elytron plate (BEPsc) nonload-bearing walls, with their thermal and mechanical properties ascertained by the finite element method, focusing on structural parameters reported in previous studies and further optimized in this paper. The results are as follows: 1) The sequence of the four models' mechanical and thermal insulation properties with the reported structural parameters is given. The mechanical properties are mainly affected by the core layer's out-of-plane bending moment of inertia Ix. The insulation capability is mainly governed by the minimum cross section of the core concrete. Based on this result, a BEP with nonuniform cross-sectional honeycomb walls is proposed. 2) Further optimization is conducted on the two models with the weakest mechanical and thermal properties. The I-beam beetle elytron plate (IBEPsc) is proven most suitable for nonload-bearing walls. The potential for end-trabecular beetle elytron plate (EBEPsc) in hollow floors is expected. 3) As biomimetic models emerge constantly, it is of great significance to conduct parallel comparisons between new and old models to determine their performance levels and advantages. The damping performance of shoes is becoming increasingly important. In general, lattice materials have excellent mechanical properties, such as high specific strength and high specific rigidity, which are widely used in various fields of modern industry. In this paper, four different lattice structures are used in soles and analyzed for shock absorption. Firstly, hierarchical gradient structures are designed based on the four lattice structures, each with six series of gradients, respectively. Secondly, the modal test of the ordinary sole was carried out, and the finite element analysis results are compared and verified. Finally, the vibration reduction effect of each sole is evaluated by the acceleration vibration level difference, power flow, and the vibration energy flux ratio. The results show that the sole with an X lattice structure and Series 6 gradient has the best vibration damping performance. Array-type electrostatic monitoring is gradually becoming an effective tool for aero-engine fault diagnosis. In this paper, we innovatively apply the surrogate optimization method to the optimization of the sensor array structure in order to meet the need of improving the particle information recognition capability of the electrostatic sensor array (ESA). A structure optimization method of ESA based on the Kriging surrogate model and improved NSGA-II algorithm is proposed. In this paper, a finite element simulation model of ESA is established, and the array optimization problem is abstracted as the solution of a mixed-integer optimization problem. This paper reduces the large-scale numerical simulations in the full-variable space with the help of the Kriging surrogate model. In addition, an improved NSGA-II algorithm for mixed-integer optimization is proposed. The simulation experiment verified that the average absolute error of the sensor before and after optimization for the identification of particle position and charge quantity was reduced by 69.88% and 49.68%, respectively. The array structure optimization method proposed in this paper facilitates the acceleration of the design process of electrostatic sensors and provides a scientific design method for their specific design for airborne application. An epiretinal membrane (ERM) is a fibrocellular proliferation on the inner surface of the retina causing blurred and distorted central vision. Surgery is the only effective method for ERM removal. This paper investigated the mechanical properties of ERM peeling using the finite element (FE) method. A FE model of ERM formation on the retina surface was constructed. The failure criterion was applied to the attachment pegs to represent the adhesive force between the ERM and retina. The simulation results were consistent with the experimental data in published research. The maximum peeling force was 4.1 mN at a peeling velocity of 2 mm/s and an angle of 30°. The peeling force was minimum at the peeling angle of 45° and increased with the increase in peeling velocity and Young's modulus of the membrane. In recent years, the development of high‐speed railways in China has been rapid. High‐speed railway bridges play an essential role whenever the railway intersects with existing facilities in three dimensions. With the increasing speed of high‐speed railways and increasingly complex geographical locations, the span of bridges is constantly increasing. Based on their advantages, steel structures in large‐span bridges are beginning to replace traditional concrete structures. Taking the steel cover beam technology applied in the Fuqiangbao Tremendous Bridge as a starting point, this paper uses Rhino parameterized modeling and Abaqus software to conduct finite element analysis on the stress of steel cover beams. It compares and analyzes stress under different conditions. The results show that the steel cover beam's most unfavorable and unstable position in this paper is at the support on the stress side. This provides a reference for monitoring the steel cover beam after its application in the Fuqiangbao Tremendous Bridge and technical accumulation for the application of steel cover beam technology. Due to the influence of many factors, distribution cables are often densely placed at the bottom of the cable trench. As a result, it is easy for distribution cables to become the thermal bottleneck of the whole transmission line. To address this dilemma, this paper establishes a finite element simulation model of a cable trench to analyze the hot spots of cables with different arrangements in the cable trench. Then, the model's accuracy is verified based on real temperature rise experiments. For an arrangement with overheating risk, the ampacity improvement method of filling the cable trench with high-thermal-conductivity material was proposed, and the ampacity improvement effect under different filling ratios was assessed. Finally, combined with the analysis of economic benefit and cost, the method of determining the optimal filling ratio was used, and the impact resistance of the cables under the impact of new energy load was analyzed. The results indicate that, for the case of the optimal filling ratio, the cables in the dense cable trench showed superior impact resistance. To reduce the influence of the permanent magnet (PM) installation error on the electromagnetic characteristics of the outer rotor permanent magnet synchronous motor (OPMSM), the rotor structure of the OPMSM is optimized in this paper. The optimization method of adding auxiliary teeth on the surface of the rotor core is studied, and the influence of different auxiliary teeth heights on the electromagnetic performance of OPMSM is analyzed. It is found that adding auxiliary teeth with suitable height can greatly reduce the installation error of the PM, increase the mechanical stability of the motor, and ensure that the electromagnetic characteristics of the motor remain at a good level. Firstly, the topology and parameters of the motor proposed in this paper are introduced and analyzed. Secondly, the influence of PM installation error on the electromagnetic performance of the motor is analyzed based on the finite element method (FEM), and the necessity of eliminating PM installation error is demonstrated. Then, the parametric scanning method is used to analyze the influence of auxiliary teeth height change on the electromagnetic performance of the motor, and the selection standard of the optimal auxiliary teeth height is determined.
