China leads the world in the volume of outward foreign direct investment (FDI) in agriculture. This status is the result of long-term policies, including the agricultural «going out» strategy and the «Belt and Road» initiative. Despite this leadership, the overall volume of both total FDI and agricultural FDI has been declining in recent years. This paper aims to analyse the structure and trends of Chinese outward FDI in agriculture, given the limited availability of statistical data. The results show that the total volume of China's agricultural FDI exceeded $106.98 billion (7.4% of China's total outward FDIs) in the period from 2005 to 2023. Despite fluctuations in investment volume, there has been a growth trend, with a peak in 2017 marked by significant transactions such as the acquisition of Syngenta. Developed countries are the primary recipients of Chinese FDI in agriculture, while developing countries dominate Chinese construction projects. The list of both investors and builders includes predominantly state-owned enter-prises. This paper investigates whether Chinese Belt and Road investments have impacted the economic complexity of host countries — a topic not addressed in the literature to date, using a sequential generalised method of moments model selection approach. The research focuses on the countries whose economic complexities are below that of China. Our empirical results show significant positive effects of Chinese investments on such host countries' economic complexities. The inflows of Chinese investments have thus supported the upgrading of production capabilities in these countries. As a powerful engine for economic reform and curbing carbon emissions, digital inclusive finance provides solid support for achieving the goal of digital carbon neutrality. This study reveals the positive effect of digital inclusive finance on carbon emission reduction and the deeper reasons behind it by digging deeper into the panel data of 213 cities in China. The study adopts advanced empirical analysis methods to rigorously test the association between digital inclusive finance and carbon emissions. The results show that there is a strong positive correlation between the booming development of digital inclusive finance and the significant decline in carbon emissions. This finding remains solid after several rounds of robustness tests, which fully proves the reliability of the research results. Further mechanism analysis reveals the multiple paths of digital financial inclusion on carbon emission reduction. First, it promotes the optimization and upgrading of industrial structure by optimizing the allocation of financial resources, thus reducing the proportion of high-carbon emission industries. Second, digital inclusive finance attracts more foreign capital inflows and introduces advanced low-carbon technologies and management experience, further promoting the development of low-carbon economy. In addition, the study also found that the differences between different cities in terms of geographic location and city size have a significant impact on the carbon emission reduction effect of digital inclusive finance. In particular, the carbon emission reduction effect of digital inclusive finance is particularly significant in western regions, central cities, and first-tier cities. In response to these findings, this paper proposes a series of targeted policy recommendations. First, the financial service system should be further optimized to increase the coverage and penetration of digital inclusive finance, especially in less developed regions and small- and medium-sized cities. Second, regional policy synergies should be strengthened to form a strong synergy to promote the development of a low-carbon economy. In addition, it should guide capital flows to low-carbon industries and encourage enterprises to increase green technology research and development and application, while actively promoting low-carbon consumption concepts and guiding consumers to form green consumption habits. Through the implementation of these measures, it is expected that the potential of digital inclusive finance in the development of a low-carbon economy will be further stimulated, making a greater contribution to the realization of the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. One of the crucial issues confronting China is high carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Despite the numerous measures outlined to promote the country's carbon neutrality target, CO2 emissions in the nation continue to increase. This means that more policy options are needed to help improve environmental sustainability (ES) in the nation. Hence, examining the relationship between financial development (FD), foreign direct investment, industrialization, and environmental sustainability in China to provide proper recommendations to drive the carbon neutrality agenda of the nation is deemed fitting. In attaining this goal, time-series data from the period 1990 to 2018 is employed. According to the results, foreign direct investment deteriorates environmental sustainability by promoting more CO2 emissions. This validates the pollution haven hypothesis (PHH). In addition, industrialization and financial development are not friendly to the nation's environmental quality. Furthermore, economic growth and urbanization escalate environmental pollution in the nation. In addition, the interactions between financial development and foreign direct investment and between financial development and industrialization deteriorate the environment in China. Moreover, foreign direct investment and financial development have an inverted U-shaped association with environmental degradation, but industrialization and environmental pollution are not nonlinearly related. This study investigates the effect of carbon emissions regulations on FDI inflow and the moderating effects of bank credit availability and fiscal capacity. According to the "pollution haven" hypothesis (PHH), foreign direct investment (FDI) tends to move to countries/regions with less stringent environmental regulations. Consistent with the PHH, this study finds that stringency of carbon emissions regulations is negatively associated with FDI inflow for Chinese prefectural-level cities during 2004–2018. This study also finds that bank credit availability and local government fiscal capacity mitigate the negative association between carbon emissions regulations and FDI. The results suggest that Chinese cities with low bank credit availability are more likely to relax carbon emissions regulations to attract FDI. Moreover, Chinese cities with high fiscal capacity can use their fiscal expenditures to minimize the negative effect of strict carbon emissions regulations on FDI. Current literature only focuses on the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and haze pollution, while giving little attention to the effect of geographic conditions on the relationship between FDI and haze pollution. Given this drawback, we conducted an empirical research to explore the impact of FDI and geographic condition on the haze pollution using data from 283 prefecture-level cities in China, including geographical location, geographical environment, and geographical proximity elements. The results indicated that: (1) FDI affected haze pollution, however the impact of FDI on haze pollution demonstrated significant heterogeneity in different areas; (2) the regional heterogeneity in haze pollution was induced by geographical environmental elements such as the population density and temperature; and (3) haze pollution and FDI have a notable spatial spillover, degrading the air quality in surrounding cities. Therefore, when the government formulates plans, the importance of geographic conditions for economic development and environmental capacity should be emphasized. Because of the spatial spillover effect of haze pollution, provinces and municipalities should be encouraged to improve their collaboration on elimination of haze pollution and implement joint steps to prevent and control haze pollution. What is geopolitical risk to multinational enterprises in a world flooded with geopolitical changes? Does such risk impact foreign direct investment flows? To answer these questions, we attempt to develop the concept of comprehensive geopolitical risk by expanding the border of geopolitical risk in the literature to include both implicit and explicit risks that overseas investors face in host countries. We further construct an index by mining big data from a news report database, which we use to examine how comprehensive geopolitical risk impacts FDI outflows from China to 154 host countries between 2003 and 2020. Our findings indicate that comprehensive geopolitical risk does negatively impact FDI outflows, especially in the energy sector. Implicit geopolitical risk also significantly deters FDI outflows. Considering national big data comprehensive experimental zones' (NBDCEZs) construction as a quasi-natural experiment, we employ a multi-period difference-in-differences method, investigating NBDCEZs' impact on green finance. Based on China's provincial panel data from 2008 to 2020, we find that NBDCEZs have a significant positive impact on green finance. Furthermore, high regional innovation capacity and foreign direct investment can enhance this effect, which differs depending on China's five main economic circles, pilot zone types, and urban characteristics. Besides providing implications on utilizing digital technology for green finance, our study benchmarks China's practices for other emerging countries, looking to develop green finance. Environmental degradation has been recognized as a global issue due to high energy consumption and economic growth. This situation needs researchers to focus on, thereby, the current article examined the impact of renewable energy production (REP), energy import, renewable energy consumption (REC), gross domestic product (GDP), inflation, and foreign direct investment (FDI) on the carbon dioxide (CO2) emission in China. The study considered secondary data and extracted it from the World Bank database covering the period 1981 to 2018. The current article has examined the stationarity of the constructs using Augmented Dickey-Fuller tests and investigated the association among constructs using the quantile autoregressive distributed lag (QARDL) model. The data revealed that REP, energy import, and REC, had a significant and negative linkage with CO2 emission in China. In contrast, GDP, inflation, and FDI are linked with CO2 emission in a positive manner.
