Due to budget and sensor technology constraints, a single sensor cannot simultaneously provide observational images with both a high spatial and temporal resolution. To solve the above problem, the spatiotemporal fusion (STF) method was proposed and proved to be an indispensable tool for monitoring land surface dynamics. There are relatively few systematic reviews of the STF method. Bibliometrics is a valuable method for analyzing the scientific literature, but it has not yet been applied to the comprehensive analysis of the STF method. Therefore, in this paper, we use bibliometrics and scientific mapping to analyze the 2967 citation data from the Web of Science from 1991 to 2023 in a metrological manner, covering the themes of STF, data fusion, multi-temporal analysis, and spatial analysis. The results of the literature analysis reveal that the number of articles displays a slow to rapid increase during the study period, but decreases significantly in 2023. Research institutions in China (1059 papers) and the United States (432 papers) are the top two contributors in the field. The keywords "Sentinel", "deep learning" (DL), and "LSTM" (Long Short-Term Memory) appeared most frequently in the past three years. In the future, remote sensing spatiotemporal fusion research can address more of the limitations of heterogeneous landscapes and climatic conditions to improve fused images' accuracy. Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora) has grown rapidly in China since its introduction in 1979, showing the trend of alien species invasion, which has seriously affected the ecosystem balance of coastal wetlands. The temporal and spatial expansion law of S. alterniflora can be obtained through remote sensing monitoring, which can provide a reference and basis for S. alterniflora management. This paper presents a method for extracting and mapping S. alterniflora based on phenological characteristics. The coastal areas of the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration are selected as the research area, and the Landsat time series data from 1990 to 2022 on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform are used to support the experiment in this paper. Firstly, the possible growing area of S. alterniflora was extracted using the normalized differential moisture index (NDMI), normalized differential vegetation index (NDVI), and normalized differential water index (NDWI); Then, the time series curve characterizing the phenological characteristics of vegetation was constructed using the vegetation index to determine the difference phase of phenological characteristics between S. alterniflora and other vegetation. Finally, a decision tree was constructed based on the phenological feature difference phase data to extract S. alterniflora, and it is applied to the analysis of temporal and spatial changes of S. alterniflora in the study area from 1990 to 2022. The results show that the area of S. alterniflora increased from ~1426 ha in 1990 to ~44,508 ha in 2022. However, the area of S. alterniflora began to show negative growth in 2015 due to the construction of nature reserves and ecological management. The results of correlation analysis showed that the growth of C. japonicum was significantly affected by temperature stress and weakly affected by precipitation. This study verified that Landsat time series images can effectively extract vegetation phenological information, which has strong feasibility for extraction and dynamic monitoring of S. alterniflora and provides technical support for the management and monitoring of invasive plants in coastal wetlands. The point cloud segmentation method plays an important role in practical applications, such as remote sensing, mobile robots, and 3D modeling. However, there are still some limitations to the current point cloud data segmentation method when applied to large-scale scenes. Therefore, this paper proposes an adaptive clustering segmentation method. In this method, the threshold for clustering points within the point cloud is calculated using the characteristic parameters of adjacent points. After completing the preliminary segmentation of the point cloud, the segmentation results are further refined according to the standard deviation of the cluster points. Then, the cluster points whose number does not meet the conditions are further segmented, and, finally, scene point cloud data segmentation is realized. To test the superiority of this method, this study was based on point cloud data from a park in Guilin, Guangxi, China. The experimental results showed that this method is more practical and efficient than other methods, and it can effectively segment all ground objects and ground point cloud data in a scene. Compared with other segmentation methods that are easily affected by parameters, this method has strong robustness. In order to verify the universality of the method proposed in this paper, we test a public data set provided by ISPRS. Architectural heritage health assessment is the basis of scientific repair and maintenance. However, existing methods do not adequately take into account the fuzziness, randomness and uncertainties unique to architectural heritage assessment. In this paper, a new evaluation model of VM-NCM is constructed by combining variable weight theory and normal cloud model theory. The model enables the combination of qualitative ratings and quantitative calculation, deals with the fuzziness in the assessment process, and resolves the randomness and reflects the uncertainty to a certain extent. Based on constructing the index system combining qualitative and quantitative indexes, the structural index values are acquired by the synergistic coupling of the fine laser point cloud model and finite element structural analysis model. The acquisition of surface index values is completed by the hyperspectral intelligent detection technology of surface materials and diseases. These reduce the generation of ambiguous information in the index detection process. An evaluation study is conducted using the Yingxian wooden pagoda in China as an example. The results show that this method takes into account the fuzziness and randomness in the evaluation process, and obtains more scientific and reliable evaluation results, which provides a research paradigm for assessing the architectural heritage health status. The accurate estimation of forest aboveground biomass is of great significance for forest management and carbon balance monitoring. Remote sensing instruments have been widely applied in forest parameters inversion with wide coverage and high spatiotemporal resolution. In this paper, the capability of different remote-sensed imagery was investigated, including multispectral images (GaoFen-6, Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8) and various SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) data (GaoFen-3, Sentinel-1, ALOS-2), in aboveground forest biomass estimation. In particular, based on the forest inventory data of Hangzhou in China, the Random Forest (RF), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Convolutional Neural Networks Long Short-Term Memory Networks (CNN-LSTM) algorithms were deployed to construct the forest biomass estimation models, respectively. The estimate accuracies were evaluated under the different configurations of images and methods. The results show that for the SAR data, ALOS-2 has a higher biomass estimation accuracy than the GaoFen-3 and Sentinel-1. Moreover, the GaoFen-6 data is slightly worse than Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 optical data in biomass estimation. In contrast with the single source, integrating multisource data can effectively enhance accuracy, with improvements ranging from 5% to 10%. The CNN-LSTM generally performs better than CNN and RF, regardless of the data used. The combination of CNN-LSTM and multisource data provided the best results in this case and can achieve the maximum R2 value of up to 0.74. It was found that the majority of the biomass values in the study area in 2018 ranged from 60 to 90 Mg/ha, with an average value of 64.20 Mg/ha. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thermodynamic and liquid water profiles can be retrieved by a ground-based microwave radiometer (MWR) in nearly all weather conditions, which is useful for detecting mesoscale phenomena. This paper reviews the advances in remote sensing of atmospheric profiles and cloud properties by MWR in central China. Comparative studies indicate that MWR retrieval accuracy is different under various skies, especially those that decay under precipitation. The off-zenith method is proven to be capable of reducing the impact of precipitation and snow on MWR retrieval accuracy. Application studies demonstrate that MWR retrievals are helpful for early warning of rainstorms, hailstorms, and thunderstorms. Moreover, MWR retrievals provide a way to study cloud properties. The temporal variations of cloud occurrence frequency (COF) and liquid water path (LWP) are different for low, middle, and high clouds, and the vertical distribution of COF is also different in autumn and other seasons. Note that MWR can infer valid retrievals over the eastern Tibetan Plateau due to the weak precipitation over there. Also, cloud properties over the eastern Tibetan Plateau present differences from those over central China, and this is related to the different characteristics of atmospheric water vapor between these two regions. To bring more benefits for mechanism study and early warning of severe weather and numerical weather prediction, the decayed accuracy of MWR zenith retrievals under precipitation should be resolved. Most Penman-Monteith-Leuning (PML) evapotranspiration (ET) modeling studies are dominated by consideration of meteorological, energy, and land use information, etc., but the dynamic coupling of soil moisture content (SM), especially in terms of improving accuracy through assimilation, lacks sufficient attention. This paper proposes a research framework for the dynamic coupling simulation of PML model and SM based on data assimilation, i.e., the remote sensing monitored SM is combined with soil evaporation of PML to obtain high-precision time-continuous SM data through data assimilation; simultaneously, dynamical soil evaporation coefficients are generated based on the assimilated SM to improve the simulation accuracy of the PML model. The new scheme was validated at a typical irrigation zone in north China and showed obvious improvements in both SM and ET simulations. Moreover, the effect of the assimilation of SM on the simulation accuracy of ET for different crop growth periods is further analyzed. In this paper, multi-source observation, such as aircraft, ground-based remote sensing, and satellite-retrieved data, has been utilized to compare and analyze the vertical characteristics of aerosol optical properties and the planetary boundary layer height (HPBL) over the North China Plain (NCP) region during May–June 2016. Aircraft observations show the vertical profiles of aerosol absorption coefficients (σabs), scattering coefficients (σsca), and extinction coefficients (σext) gradually decrease with altitude, with their maximum values near HPBL. The vertical profiles of σext depended most on the vertical distribution of measured σsca, indicating a significant contribution of scattering aerosols. In addition, the prominent characteristic of the inverse relationship between σext and moisture profile could serve as a reference for predicting air quality in the NCP region. The lower layer pollution during the field experiment was likely caused by the accumulation of fine-mode aerosols, characterized by the vertical distribution of the Ångström exponent and the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) products. Typically, HPBL derived from aircraft and surface Micro Pulse Lidar (MPL) was approximate, while the predicted HPBL by meteorological data indicates an underestimation of ~192 m. Aerosol optical depth (AOD) calculated from aircraft and ground-based remote sensing (such as MPL and AERONET) experienced a strong correlation, and both of them exhibited a similar tendency. However, the AOD retrieved from satellites was significantly larger than that from aircraft and ground-based remote sensing. Overall, the inversion algorithm, cloud identification algorithm, representativeness of the space, and time of the observation may lead to an overestimation or underestimation of AOD under certain circumstances. This study may serve as a re-evaluation of AOD retrieved from multi-source observations and provide a reference to uncover the actual atmospheric environment in the NCP regions. This study investigates the application of hyperspectral image space–spectral fusion technology in lithologic classification, using data from China's GF-5 and Europe's Sentinel-2A. The research focuses on the southern region of Tuanjie Peak in the Western Kunlun Range, comparing five space–spectral fusion methods: GSA, SFIM, CNMF, HySure, and NonRegSRNet. To comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness and applicability of these fusion methods, the study conducts a comprehensive assessment from three aspects: evaluation of fusion effects, lithologic classification experiments, and field validation. In the evaluation of fusion effects, the study uses an index analysis and comparison of spectral curves before and after fusion, concluding that the GSA fusion method performs the best. For lithologic classification, the Random Forest (RF) classification method is used, training with both area and point samples. The classification results from area sample training show significantly higher overall accuracy compared to point samples, aligning well with 1:50,000 scale geological maps. In field validation, the study employs on-site verification combined with microscopic identification and comparison of images with actual spectral fusion, finding that the classification results for the five lithologies are essentially consistent with field validation results. The "GSA+RF" method combination established in this paper, based on data from GF-5 and Sentinel-2A satellites, can provide technical support for lithological classification in similar high-altitude regions. Mountainous terrains are typical over southeast China, with complex and diverse topography, large terrain undulations, rich geographic features, and meteorological variations. Previous studies show that ERA5 meteorological variables are generally accurate with respect to large plains or urban agglomerations, while their applicability to mountainous areas remains inconclusive. In this paper, using high-precision measurements probed by ground-based remote sensing instruments in May–July 2023 at a typical mountainous Shanghuang site in southeast China, the vertical accuracy of the ERA5 reanalysis datasets were comparatively evaluated. Our findings depict that the horizontal wind speeds of the ERA5 reanalysis data show a good performance compared to the Doppler lidar observations. In quantitative terms, ERA5 horizontal wind speeds are about 8% higher than the observed values below a height of 400 m, while above 400 m, an increasing negative bias is observed along as altitude increases. Differing from the horizontal wind speeds, there is a large discrepancy in the vertical wind speeds between the ERA5 and the observations, with a deviation of −150% to 40%. In terms of the thermal variables, the temperature extracted from ERA5 are consistent with the measurements in the low troposphere. Nevertheless, large systematic errors occur at 2000–3000 m, and the overall presentation shows that the errors gradually increase with the increase in altitude. Concerning the relative humidity, the general trend in ERA5 is similar to that observed by the microwave radiometer, but the relative errors from 500 to 2500 m range from 40% to 100%. This study also reveals that ERA5 is poorly representative and requires further improvements during extreme weather events such as rainstorms and typhoons. In particular, the horizontal wind speeds at the middle and lower levels deviate strongly from the observations. Given the importance of atmospheric thermodynamic stratifications in terms of both environmental and climatic issues, the results expand the application of the ERA5 reanalysis datasets in the mountainous areas of southeast China. Forest stock volume is the main factor to evaluate forest carbon sink level. At present, the combination of multi-source remote sensing and non-parametric models has been widely used in FSV estimation. However, the biodiversity of natural forests is complex, and the response of the spatial information of remote sensing images to FSV is significantly reduced, which seriously affects the accuracy of FSV estimation. To address this challenge, this paper takes China's Baishanzu Forest Park with representative characteristics of natural forests as the research object, integrates the forest survey data, SRTM data, and Landsat 8 images of Baishanzu Forest Park, constructs a time series dataset based on survey time, and establishes an FSV estimation model based on the CNN-LSTM-Attention algorithm. The model uses the convolutional neural network to extract the spatial features of remote sensing images, uses the LSTM to capture the time-varying characteristics of FSV, captures the feature variables with a high response to FSV through the attention mechanism, and finally completes the prediction of FSV. The experimental results show that some features (e.g., texture, elevation, etc.) of the dataset based on multi-source data feature variables are more effective in FSV estimation than spectral features. Ponds constitute a pivotal component of aquatic ecosystems. The aquatic ecosystem of the Huai River Basin (HRB) in China was once damaged by severe pollution, and numerous ponds in the basin have not been secured. In this paper, Shenqiu County, a typical county in HRB with many ponds, is selected. Based on high-resolution images with ALOS in 2010, GF-2 in 2016, and GF-1 in 2022, we employed discriminant analysis (DA), classification and regression tree, support vector machine, and random forest to extract the ponds based on object-oriented and further analyzed the spatial-temporal variations of the ponds in this county. The results of the DA in these three years exhibited a higher kappa coefficient (>0.7), and overall accuracy (>75%), signifying superior performance when compared to the other three methods. There were 4625, 5315, and 4748 ponds in 2010, 2016, and 2022, with a total area of 12.87, 11.99, and 9.37 km2, respectively. The number of ponds had a trend of rising in the initial period (2010–2016) and falling later (2016–2022), while the total area revealed a continuous decline. Meanwhile, these ponds showed a clustering phenomenon with three main clustering areas, and the scope of the clustering areas also changed to a certain extent from 2010 to 2022. Our study offers valuable methodological support for the ecological monitoring and management of water environments in regions characterized by a dense concentration of ponds. The use of remote sensing technique to monitor atmospheric water vapor is significant for weather and climate studies. However, the general methods of retrieving precipitable water vapor (PWV) with high precision and high resolution using remote sensing satellite has hardly been investigated, which becomes the focus of this paper. A general remote sensing PWV retrieval (GRPR) method that uses level-1 near-infrared (NIR) data sympathized by a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) is proposed. In this method, the atmospheric transmittance coefficients are determined by combining the radiative transmission model and the central wavelength interpolation method instead of directly using the traditional empirical values. Next, the PWV derived from remote sensing NIR data is obtained using the adaptive seasonal exponent model rather than the traditional transmittance–water vapor lookup table method. Furthermore, the accuracy of remote sensing NIR PWV is further calibrated by establishing the seasonal relationship between PWV residual and elevation. The corresponding NIR data from the Fengyun-3A (FY3A) satellite over the period of 2013–2015 in China are selected to validate the proposed method. Statistical results show the good performance of GRPR method for internal and external accuracies with root mean square (RMS) improvement rates of 76.8% and 72.4%, respectively, compared with the FY3A level-2 PWV products. In addition, the proposed method has good robustness and is almost unaffected by the PWV magnitude at different seasons. Proposed GRPR method is also applied for PWV retrieval at different time scales, further showing its superiority of retrieving PWV with high precision and high resolution. • The ISP method allows for gathering a large number of historical training samples. • The SRVI values of the same crop planted in neighboring years range from 0.91 and 1.2. • A distinct northward expansion trend is evident for all four major crops, in Heilongjiang Province, China. Mapping agricultural information such as cropping area and type is of great significance for land use and food security and a common method to retrieve such information is satellite imagery classification. The current image classification techniques require a statistically large number of training samples to obtain representative spectral signatures, ideally collected during the satellite overpass time/date. Although this prerequisite sounds simple and easy in principle, it is extremely challenging and sometimes impossible when classifying historical satellite images, as one simply cannot go back in time to collect training datasets or ground truthing. In this paper, we introduce an iterative and subsequent proximation (ISP) method to circumvent this problem for historical image classifications for historical crop mapping. This method assumes that the same crops grown two years apart have similar spectral properties within the same growing season, with limited variation. This allows the use of the crop information classified in any given year (n) to be used as training samples for the next year (n + 1) or the previous year (n-1). Iteratively repeating n-1, n-2... process leads to the mapping of historical cropping information without a priori ground truthing data. To demonstrate the ISP feasibility, we first used the historical Landsat time-series data to map four major stable crops (rice, maize, soybean, and wheat) in Hailun County, Heilongjiang Province, China, and then further expanded the ISP application to the entire Heilongjiang Province to map cropping areas from 1982 to 2020, using the classification and regression trees (CART) algorithm. The results were validated for those years when actual cropping measurement data were available and further verified with statistical data for other years. The results indicated that the proposed ISP method was appropriate for the historical mapping of four major crops, with a mapping accuracy of approximately 80 % when validated with field data, and correlation coefficients of 0.86, 0.85, 0.91, and 0.94, respectively when compared with historical statistical cropping data. The crop mapping results showed distinct trends of northward expansion in each of the four crops in Heilongjiang Province, which agreed well with previous studies. Aerosol types have crucial and distinguished impacts on climate effects and cause the difference of air pollution. However, direct retrieval of aerosol type by satellite remote sensing is difficult, and the satellite products of aerosol type are seriously lacking. At present, the identification of aerosol type is mainly based on ground-based observation data, but the coverage area of ground-based stations is limited, and large-scale spatial continuous monitoring cannot be carried out. The existing aerosol type identification methods based on satellite data need to combine multiple satellites data (e.g. Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), etc.) which leads to a low temporal resolution. The research about aerosol type identification only based on geostationary satellite data is lacking. Therefore, aerosol type identification based on the multi-parameter threshold method and the neural network method are proposed and compared in this paper. The neural network jointly using spectral and temporal information was trained and tested by the measurements from 26 sites of Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) and Sun-Sky Radiometer Observation Network (SONET). For the overall validation, the aerosol type identification based on the neural network is better than that based on the multi-parameter threshold method, and the accuracy reaches 71.44%. This paper provides an overview of the recent developments in remote sensing technology and machine learning algorithms for estimating important biophysical and biochemical parameters for precision farming. The objectives are (i) to provide an overview of recent advances in remotely sensed retrieval of biophysical and biochemical parameters brought by the developments in sensor technologies and robust machine learning algorithms and (ii) to identify the sources of uncertainty in retrieving biophysical and biochemical parameters and implications for precision agriculture. The review revealed that developments in crop biophysical and biochemical parameters retrieval techniques were mainly driven by announcements and the availability of new sensors. Two ground-breaking events can be identified, i.e., the availability of Sentinel-2 and the SuperDove constellation. The two provide high temporal-high spatial resolution data relevant for site-specific management and super-spectral configuration, enabling retrieval of crop growth and health parameters. The free availability of Sentinel-2 triggered the testing of its spectral configurations and upscaling of retrieval approaches using simulated data from field spectrometers and airborne hyperspectral sensors. SuperDoves will likely reduce the cost of very high-resolution data while providing unprecedented capabilities for detailed, accurate and frequent characterisation of field variability. Studies showed that the red-edge bands and hybrid models coupling Radiative Transfer Model (RTM) and machine learning regression algorithms (MLRA) are promising for operational and accurate monitoring of stress-related crop parameters to aid time-sensitive agronomic decisions. However, such models were tested in Mediterranean climates and performed poorly in African semi-arid areas and China's temperate continental semi-humid monsoon climates. Therefore, locally-calibrated RTM models incorporating crop-type maps and other spatio-temporal constraints may reduce uncertainties when adapted to data-scarce regions. Generally, permanent experimental sites and a lack of systematic calibration data on various crops are some limiting factors to using remote sensing technologies for PA in Sub-Saharan Africa. Other complexities arise from farm configurations, such as small field sizes and mixed cropping practices. Resource-based cities generally face the dual pressures of ecological damage and high carbon emissions. Taking the National Sustainable Development Plan for Resource-Based Cities (NSDP) issued in China as a quasi-natural experiment, this paper for the first time, uses the difference-in-difference method to test the coordinated effect of green expansion and carbon reduction brought by NSDP at the county level using rich remote sensing data. The results show that NSDP has significantly promoted the ecological quality improvement and CO 2 emission mitigation in resource-based cities, and the above coordinated benefits mainly occur in energy, mature, declining, northeastern, and municipal resource-based cities. Through the mechanism analysis, we find that NSDP mainly works by promoting the transformation of industry sector to agriculture, animal husbandry, accommodation and catering, finance, and environment management sectors, which are reflected in output, employment, product yield, land type and land transaction area. The remote sensing technique can be used to obtain frequent and wide-coverage images of the areas of interest, and has become an effective tool to monitor the ecological risks occurring in coastal areas. In this study, taking Jiaozhou Bay in China as the study area, an innovative ecological risk assessment framework was established using multi-source remote sensing images and in-situ sample data, which fully considers the potential harm of oil spills and Enteromorpha blooms on the ecology of the bay. Specifically, the oil spill risk for Jiaozhou Bay from 2017 to 2019 was identified by a deep learning based method from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, and the Enteromorpha bloom risk for the corresponding years was identified by a floating algae index (FAI) threshold method from multi-source optical images. Then, using habitat information and ground observation data about the marine species in the bay, environmental vulnerability maps were generated. Finally, a disaster-causing factors and disaster-bearing factors weighted risk assessment model was developed. The risk source monitoring results show that the occurrence frequency of oil spills in Jiaozhou Bay decreased from 2017 to 2019, while the outbreak intensity of Enteromorpha blooms generally became higher. The ecological risk assessment results reveal that the high risk areas of Jiaozhou Bay are mainly around the transportation regions and the ports, with a higher risk degree in the eastern and southern parts. To support our work, the well-trained oil spill detection network model and some information about the oil spill events that have occurred in Jiaozhou Bay are provided in this paper. Residential quarters are a critical component of urban areas, which significantly affects people's health and quality of life. In recent decades, the high-density and crowded residential quarters have become the mainstream organizational model of construction in China, because of the rapid and massive urbanization in many cities. This results in the contradiction between the eco-environment needs and the accommodation needs. Therefore, a systematic evaluation of the eco-environment in residential quarters is urgently needed to address the drawbacks of current residential quarters' planning and design. This paper aims to explore ways to improve the eco-environment with residential quarters from the perspective of China. We first used the Remote Sensing Ecological Index (RSEI) to evaluate the eco-environmental quality of 3, 756 residential quarters in the main urban areas of Xi 'an, China. Then, we quantitatively analyzed the landscape patterns of the impervious surfaces in these residential quarters. Finally, we characterized the impacts of residential quarters layout on the ecological environment by using the vegetation coverage (FVC), the normalized difference bare soil index (NDBSI), building density (BD), the residential density (RD), and the population density (PD) as main factors. The results are as follows: (1) Only 20.5 % of residential quarters with good eco-environments were distributed between the Second and Third Ring Road, indicating the need for improvement in creating livable eco-environments. (2) The shape of the impervious surface of excellent ecological quarters is complex and broken, the average patch area is smaller, and the degree of aggregation and combination of patches is lower compared to residential quarters with poor ecological quality. Therefore, it is recommended to reduce the connectivity of the impervious surface to improve the eco-environment of residential quarters. (3) Among the factors affecting RSEI of residential quarters, FVC, and NDBSI contribute more than other factors. For the construction of excellent eco-environments in residential quarters, we suggest that vegetation coverage should be no less than 0.4, the impervious surface coverage should be no more than 0.53, the building density should be between 0.28 ∼ 0.35, residential density should be no more than 0.22, and the population density of residential quarter should be under 0.29. Overall, for open and low-density residential quarters, the living environment can be improved by enriching vegetation and reducing impervious surfaces, while compact, high-density residential quarters can create a livable eco-environment by optimizing the impervious surface landscape patterns.
