Sea purslane (Sesuvium portulacastrum) was cultivated for two 90-day sequences at two spacings, and with various soil amendments, to evaluate its potential to arrest the increase in soil salinity and sodicity associated with irrigation using paper- and pulp-mill effluent. Its phytodesalination capacity (PDC) with respect to Na ranged from 162 to 226 kg/ha in the first sequence and 167 to 250 kg/ha in the second sequence; the PDC is reliable even under drought stress. Addition of amendments, in particular pressmud compost, increased the average Na+ uptake by 38%, leading to the highest PDC of 250 kg/ha for a single crop sequence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Key Message: Integrated omics analyses outline the cellular and metabolic events of hemp plants in response to salt stress and highlight several photosynthesis and energy metabolism related pathways as key regulatory points. Soil salinity affects many physiological processes of plants and leads to crop yield losses worldwide. For hemp, a crop that is valued for multiple aspects, such as its medical compounds, fibre, and seed, a comprehensive understanding of its salt stress responses is a prerequisite for resistance breeding and tailoring its agronomic performance to suit certain industrial applications. Here, we first observed the phenotype of salt-stressed hemp plants and found that under NaCl treatment, hemp plants displayed pronounced growth defects, as indicated by the significantly reduced average height, number of leaves, and chlorophyll content. Next, we conducted comparative proteomics and metabolomics to dissect the complex salt-stress response mechanisms. A total of 314 proteins and 649 metabolites were identified to be differentially behaving upon NaCl treatment. Functional classification and enrichment analysis unravelled that many differential proteins were proteases associated with photosynthesis. Through metabolic pathway enrichment, several energy-related pathways were found to be altered, such as the biosynthesis and degradation of branched-chain amino acids, and our network analysis showed that many ribosomal proteins were involved in these metabolic adaptations. Taken together, for hemp plants, influences on chloroplast function probably represent a major toxic effect of salinity, and modulating several energy-producing pathways possibly through translational regulation is presumably a key protective mechanism against the negative impacts. Environmental contamination by chromium represents a serious public health problem. Therefore, it is crucial to develop and optimize remediation technologies to reduce its concentration in the environment. The aims of this study were to evaluate the uptake of chromium by live and complete microbial mats in experimental mesocosms under different pH and salinity conditions to understand how these factors affect the microphytobenthic community and, consequently, how chromium removal process is influenced. Microbial mats from the estuarine environment were exposed to 15 mg Cr/L under different pH (2, 4, and 8) and salinity (2, 15, and 33) conditions. Salinity, redox potential, and pH were measured throughout the trial in solutions and in microbial mats, while total Cr determinations were performed at the end of the assay. The results demonstrated that the removal efficiency of Cr by microbial mats was significantly improved in solutions at pH 2, remaining unaffected by variations in salinity. Notably, both cyanobacteria and diatoms showed remarkable resistance to Cr exposure under all conditions tested, highlighting their exceptional adaptability. Coastal aquifers with high hydraulic conductivities on the order of 10 -2  m s -1 have unconventional salinity distributions with the presence of non-fresh groundwater at the water table over a wide swath near the coast. This study aims to unravel the mechanisms underlying the phenomenon via numerical simulations for variably saturated, density-driven flow and solute transport in porous media. The simulation results indicate that the existence of non-fresh groundwater at the water table is attributed to the upward mass flux in the saturated zone near the coast, which transports solute from deeper groundwater toward the water table. With high hydraulic conductivity, the upward mass flux becomes prominent at shallower elevations because of the high Darcy flux and the shallow saline groundwater. The upward mass flux has two main drivers, upward advection by the upward flow component and transverse dispersion by the seaward flow component. The advective mass flux dominates over the transverse dispersion in the deep part of the saturated zone where only groundwater with sea water salinity exists. In contrast, the transverse dispersion becomes more pronounced than the upward advection in the shallow saturated zone just beneath the water table and in the unsaturated zone immediately above the water table. The degradation of freshwater systems by salt pollution is a threat to global freshwater resources. Salinization is commonly identified by increased specific conductance (conductivity), a proxy for salt concentrations. However, conductivity fails to account for the diversity of salts entering freshwaters and the potential implications this has on microbial communities and functions. We tested 4 types of salt pollution-MgCl 2 , MgSO 4 , NaCl, and Na 2 SO 4 -on bacterial taxonomic and functional α-, β-diversity of communities originating from streams in two distinct localities (Nebraska [NE] and Ohio [OH], USA). Community responses depended on the site of origin, with NE and OH exhibiting more pronounced decreases in community diversity in response to Na 2 SO 4 and MgCl 2 than other salt amendments. A closer examination of taxonomic and functional diversity metrics suggests that core features of communities are more resistant to induced salt stress and that marginal features at both a population and functional level are more likely to exhibit significant structural shifts based on salt specificity. Reverse osmosis (RO) effectively provides clean drinking water. Different RO membrane types are tailored to treat saline water feeds with varying characteristics. In the context of low brackish water feeds, the objective is to remove only a minimal excess of salinity through the membrane. Our study introduces a method of membrane post-treatments capable of achieving controlled salt rejection while concurrently enhancing permeate flux, which is vital for achieving effective and energy-efficient desalination of low brackish water. The post-treatments were conducted on our in-house-developed membranes using aqueous solutions of N,N-Dimethylformamide and glycerol for different drying times at the coupon level. The process was scaled up at the module level, allowing us to assess its potential for commercial application. At the coupon level, the permeate flux increased significantly from 3.7 ± 0.9 to 10.6 ± 0.2 L/m 2 ·h·bar, while the salt rejection decreased from 95.6 ± 1% to 70.5 ± 1% when measured with a feed of 2,000 ppm NaCl concentration. At the module level, we observed a higher flux of 12.8 L/m 2 ·h·bar, alongside a salt rejection of 55.5% with a similar feed. Varying post-treatment parameters at the coupon level allowed us to attain the desired salt rejection and permeate flux values. Physical changes in both pristine and post-treated membranes, including polymer swelling, were observed without chemical alterations, enhancing our understanding of the post-treatment effect and its potential for broader commercial use. Aiming at the problem of long soil–water characteristic curve (SWCC) testing times and the difficulty of prediction accuracy in complex environments, this paper establishes a SWCC prediction model based on a neural network machine learning algorithm which can take into account the influence of multiple factors such as temperature, deformation, and salinity. The input layer of the model can reflect the physical properties of the soil and the influence of the external environment, while the suction is taken as an input variable, which in turn can directly obtain the water content under the corresponding conditions. The predictive ability of the model is verified by comparing and analyzing the predicted results of the SWCC under different temperature, void ratio, and salinity conditions with the experimental results. The research in this paper provides a new method for predicting the SWCC considering multiple factors, and the prediction accuracy of the model is related to the amount of experimental data. Currently, China's river water quality evaluation adopts the "Environmental Quality Standards for Surface Water", while the seawater quality evaluation uses the "Seawater Quality Standard". However, estuarine areas, where rivers meet the sea, do not have evaluation standards, and most often, the "Seawater Quality Standard" is applied. At present, the water quality in the estuary area sometimes exceeds the corresponding seawater quality standards, even though the quality of the surface water does not exceed surface water environmental quality standards and the quality of the seawater before mixing also meets the seawater quality standards. This paper proposes a dynamic evaluation standard based on the salinity of estuarine water and uses this standard to evaluate the water quality in estuaries, thus solving the abovementioned issue. The implementation of this method is simple and effective. Taking the Pearl River Estuary as an example, this paper introduces the dynamic standard evaluation method for water quality in the Pearl River Estuary. Compared to the existing seawater quality standards implemented in estuaries, this dynamic evaluation standard can assess the water quality in estuaries more accurately and provide a reference for water quality evaluation methods in estuaries. The thickness of the thin wetting film depends on disjoining pressure forces, and it evolves with pH evolution due to brine acidification at the physical and chemical conditions of geological carbon dioxide storage becoming thinner in response to dewetting. In the literature, molecular dynamic simulation (MDS) studies have been employed to understand the effect of pressure/capillary pressure on the thin wetting film evolution. In this paper, a theoretical approach based on the Frumkin–Derjaguin Equation (FDE), models of electric double layer repulsion, and van der Waals forces have been used for the calculation of the wetting film thickness. The approach excluded hydration forces contribution to disjoining pressure forces due partly to its poorly understood nature, and partly to the high salinity conditions encountered in geological carbon storage. Due to its promising global storage capacity compared to other lithologies, the carbon dioxide–brine–silica systems was chosen to simulate sandstone saline aquifers. The validation of the model benefited much from literature resources on data and a universal model of carbon dioxide–brine interfacial tension. Calculated results confirm pH-induced dewetting and they follow trends controlled by pH and pressure as found in the literature. The novelty of the paper can be seen from the fact that it has demonstrated a theoretical supplement to MDS studies in addition to justifying the fundamental utility and versatility of the FDE. Moreover, the paper links for the first time, a transcendental equation to the thin wetting film theory encountered in the carbon dioxide–solid–brine system found in geological carbon storage. Freshwater salinization is an escalating global environmental issue that threatens freshwater biodiversity, including fish populations. This study aims to uncover the molecular basis of salinity physiological responses in a non-native minnow species (Phoxinus septimaniae x P. dragarum) exposed to saline effluents from potash mines in the Llobregat River, Barcelona, Spain. Employing high-throughput mRNA sequencing and differential gene expression analyses, brain, gills, and liver tissues collected from fish at two stations (upstream and downstream of saline effluent discharge) were examined. Salinization markedly influenced global gene expression profiles, with the brain exhibiting the most differentially expressed genes, emphasizing its unique sensitivity to salinity fluctuations. Pathway analyses revealed the expected enrichment of ion transport and osmoregulation pathways across all tissues. Furthermore, tissue-specific pathways associated with stress, reproduction, growth, immune responses, methylation, and neurological development were identified in the context of salinization. Rigorous validation of RNA-seq data through quantitative PCR (qPCR) underscored the robustness and consistency of our findings across platforms. A multitude of anthropogenic stressors impact biological communities and ecosystem processes in urban streams. Prominent among them are salinization, increased temperature, and altered flow regimes, all of which can affect microbial decomposer communities and litter decomposition, a fundamental ecosystem process in streams. Impairments caused by these stressors individually or in combination and recovery of communities and ecosystem processes after release from these stressors are not well understood. To improve our understanding of multiple stressors impacts we performed an outdoor stream mesocosm experiment with 64 experimental units to assess the response of microbial litter decomposers and decomposition. The three stressors we applied in a full-factorial design were increased salinity (NaCl addition, 0.53 mS cm -1 above ambient), elevated temperature (3.5 °C above ambient), and reduced flow velocity (3.5 vs 14.2 cm s -1 ). After two weeks of stressor exposure (first sampling) and two subsequent weeks of recovery (second sampling), we determined leaf-associated microbial respiration, fungal biomass, and the sporulation activity and community composition of aquatic hyphomycetes in addition to decomposition rates of black alder (Alnus glutinosa) leaves confined in fine-mesh litter bags. Microbial colonization of the litter was accompanied by significant mass loss in all mesocosms. However, there was little indication that mass loss, microbial respiration, fungal biomass, sporulation rate or community composition of aquatic hyphomycetes was strongly affected by either single stressors or their interactions. Two exceptions were temperature effects on sporulation and decomposition rate. Similarly, no notable differences among mesocosms were observed after the recovery phase. Microplastics pollution and salinity intrusion in freshwater ecosystem is one of the worldwide climate change consequences those have negative impacts on the physiology of aquatic organisms. Hence, a 15-day experiment was carried out where Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was exposed to different salinity gradients i.e. 0 ‰, 3 ‰, 6 ‰, 9 ‰, and 12 ‰ alone and along with 10 mg/L polyamide microplastics (PA-MP) in order to measure its effects on the hematology, gill, and intestinal morphology. The results exhibited that all the fish treated with PA-MP ingested microplastics and the quantity of accumulation was significantly greater in higher salinity gradients (9 ‰ and 12 ‰). In addition, the PA-MP treated fish showed increased glucose level and at the same time reduced hemoglobin concentration with the increase of salinity. The percentages of abnormalities in erythrocytes both cellular (twin, teardrop and spindle shaped) and nuclear (notched nuclei, nuclear bridge and karyopyknosis) significantly enhanced with PA-MP exposure again in higher salinity treatments (9 ‰ and 12 ‰). The principal component analysis (PCA) exhibited that the addition of 10 mg/L PA-MP negatively affected the hematology of Nile tilapia than that of salinity treatments alone. Besides, the exposure of PA-MP in 9 ‰ and 12 ‰ salinity gradients escalated the severity of histological damages in gills and intestine. Salinization is a severe threat to agriculture and the environment in many areas, and the same in Qaidam Basin, Qinghai Province, Northwestern China. Microorganisms have an important influence on regulating the biochemical cycles of ecosystems; however, systematic research exploring microbial diversity and interactions with saline-soil ecosystems' environmental variables remains scarce. Thus, 16 S rRNA high-throughput sequencing was performed in this paper to characterize microbial diversity under different levels of salinized soils: non-salinized (NS, 2.25 g/L), moderately salinized (MS, 6.14 g/L) and highly salinized (HS, 9.82 g/L). The alpha diversity results showed that the HS soil was significantly different from the NS and MS soils. An analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) and a principal co-ordinates analysis (PCoA) indicated that NS and MS clustered closely while HS separated from the other two. Significant differences in microbial composition were observed at the taxonomic level. Proteobacteria (42.29-79.23 %) were the most abundant phyla in the studied soils. Gammaproteobacteria (52.49 and 66.61 %) had higher abundance in the MS and HS soils at the class level; Methylophaga and Pseudomonas were the predominant bacteria in the HS soil; and Azotobacter and Methylobacillus were abundant in the MS soil. Most genera belonging to Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were detected via a linear discriminate analysis (LDA) effect size (LEfSe) analysis, which indicated that microbes with the ability to degrade organic matter and accomplish nutrient cycling can be well-adapted to salt conditions. Further analyses (redundancy analysis and Mantel test) showed that the microbial communities were mainly related to the soil salinity, electrical conductivity (EC 1:5 ), total phosphorus (TP) and ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N). Overall, the findings of the study can provide insights for better understanding the dominant indigenous microbes and their roles in biochemical cycles in different saline soils in the Qaidam Basin, Qinghai Province, China. The rejected brines from desalination plants contain significant amounts of heavy metals. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of Phallusia nigra Savigny, 1816 (P. nigra) in removing vanadium from the rejected brines of desalination plants through the bioaccumulation process. Initial assessments revealed a remarkably high accumulation rate of vanadium in P. nigra with a bioaccumulation factor exceeding 4.7 × 10 4 in the tunic and 5.1 × 10 5 in the mantle body. Acclimation experiments demonstrated that P. nigra could survive salinities up to 56 practical salinity units (psu), temperatures of ≤32 °C, and pH of 6.5-8.5. We employed the L-16 Taguchi approach in experimental design to optimize environmental conditions for vanadium removal by P.nigra. Our results indicated that temperature has the most significant effect on increasing vanadium bioaccumulation in P. nigra, followed by salinity and pH. Under optimal conditions, the vanadium concentration reached 1892.30 ppm in the entire body of P. nigra compared to 350 ppm in natural conditions. Large quantities of marine ballast water discharged by ocean-going vessels can cause salinity increases in freshwater ports, which in turn negatively affects indigenous plankton in the ports. In this study, we investigated the impacts of marine ballast water discharge on the plankton community in a freshwater wharf through field surveys. It was found that salinity stress caused reductions in community indicators such as plankton community composition, abundance and diversity, thus threatening the structure and function of the plankton community in the wharf. In terms of the impact range, the salinity stress had a significant effect on all plankton in the waters near the discharge point and the phytoplankton in the waters 50 m from the discharge point, but had no significant effect on the plankton in the waters further away. Ballast water discharge also caused a significant decrease in the alpha diversity and richness of the plankton community but had no significant effect on the evenness of the plankton community. Moreover, phytoplankton were more tolerant of salinity changes than zooplankton in our study. Constructed wetlands use vegetation and microorganisms to remove contaminants like nitrogen and phosphorus from water. For mariculture, the impact of salinity on the efficiency of wastewater treatment of wetlands is unneglectable. However, little is known about their impact on the microbiome in constructed wetlands. Here, we set four salinity levels (15, 22, 29, and 36) in Salicornia constructed wetlands, and the experiment was conducted for a period of 72 days. The 15 group exhibited the highest removal rates of nitrogen compounds and phosphate, compared to the other salinity groups, the nosZ gene exhibited significantly higher expression in the 22 group (p < 0.05), indicated that microorganisms in 22 salinity have higher denitrification abilities. The three dominant phyla identified within the microbiomes were Proteobacteria, known for their diverse metabolic capabilities; Cyanobacteria, important for photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation; and Firmicutes, which include many fermenters. The ecological network analysis revealed a 'small world' model, characterized by high interconnectivity and short path lengths between microbial species, and had higher co-occurrence (45.13%) observed in this study comparing to the Erdös-Réyni random one (32.35%). The genus Microbulbifer emerged as the sole connector taxon, pivotal for integrating different microbial communities involved in nitrogen removal. A negative correlation was observed between salinity levels and network complexity, as assessed by the number of connections and diversity of interactions within the microbial community. The escalating salinity levels in cultivable soil pose a significant threat to agricultural productivity and, consequently, human sustenance. This problem is being exacerbated by natural processes and human activities, coinciding with a period of rapid population growth. Developing halophytic crops is needed to ensure food security is not impaired and land resources can be used sustainably. Evolution has created many close halophyte relatives of our major glycophytic crops, such as Puccinellia tenuiflora (relative of barley and wheat), Oryza coarctata (relative of rice) and Glycine soja (relative of soybean). There are also some halophytes have been subjected to semi-domestication and are considered as minor crops, such as Chenopodium quinoa. In this paper, we examine the prevailing comprehension of robust salinity resilience in halophytes. Precise prediction of soil salinity using visible, and near-infrared (vis-NIR) spectroscopy is crucial for ensuring food security and effective environmental management. This paper focuses on the precise prediction of soil salinity utilizing visible and near-infrared (vis-NIR) spectroscopy, a critical factor for food security and effective environmental management. The objective is to utilize vis-NIR spectra alongside a multiple regression model (MLR) and a random forest (RF) modeling approach to predict soil salinity across various land use types, such as farmlands, bare lands, and rangelands accurately. To this end, we selected 150 sampling points representatives of these diverse land uses. At each point, we collected soil samples to measure the soil salinity (ECe) and employed a portable spectrometer to capture the spectral reflectance across the full wavelength range of 400 to 2400 nm. The methodology involved using both individual spectral reflectance values and combinations of reflectance values from different wavelengths as input variables for developing the MLR and RF models. The results indicated that the RF model (RMSE = 4.85 dS m-1, R2 = 0.87, and RPD = 3.15), utilizing combined factors as input variables, outperformed others. Furthermore, our analysis across different land uses revealed that models incorporating combined input variables yielded significantly better results, particularly for farmlands and rangelands. Despite significant capital and operating costs, mechanical vapor compression (MVC) remains the preferred technology for challenging brine concentration applications. This work seeks to assess the dependence of MVC costs on feedwater salinity and desired water recovery and to quantify the value of improved component performance or reduced component costs for reducing the levelized cost of water (LCOW) of MVC. We built a cost optimization model coupling thermophysical, heat and mass transfer, and technoeconomic models to optimize and identify low cost MVC system designs as a function of feedwater salinity and water recovery. The biodegradation of guar gum by microorganisms sourced from coalbeds can result in low-temperature gel breaking, thereby reducing reservoir damage. However, limited attention has been given to the influence of salinity on the synergistic biodegradation of coal and guar gum. In this study, biodegradation experiments of guar gum and lignite were conducted under varying salinity conditions. The primary objective was to investigate the controlling effects and mechanisms of salinity on the synergistic biodegradation of lignite and guar gum. The findings revealed that salinity had an inhibitory effect on the biomethane production from the co-degradation of lignite and guar gum. The biomethane production declined with increasing salinity levels, decreasing from 120.9 mL to 47.3 mL. Even under 20 g/L salt stress conditions, bacteria in coalbeds could effectively break the gel and the viscosity decreased to levels below 5 mPa s. As salinity increased, the removal rate of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) decreased from 55.63% to 31.17%, and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) accumulated in the digestion system. High salt environment reduces the intensity of each fluorescence peak. Alterations in salinity led to changes in microbial community structure and diversity. Under salt stress, there was an increased relative abundance of Proteiniphilum and Methanobacterium, ensuring the continuity of anaerobic digestion. Hydrogentrophic methanogens exhibited higher salt tolerance compared to acetoclastic methanogens. Limnospira maxima has been adapted to grow in high salinity and in an economically alternative medium using industrial-grade fertilizers under harsh environmental conditions in Saudi Arabia. A sequence of scaling-up processes, from the laboratory to large-scale open raceways, was conducted along with gradual adaptation to environmental stress (salinity, light, temperature, pH). High biomass concentration at harvest point and areal productivity were achieved during the harsh summer season (1.122 g L -1 and 60.35 g m -2 day -1 , respectively). The average protein content was found to be above 40 % of dry weight. Changes in the color and morphological appearance of the L. maxima culture were observed after direct exposure to sunlight in the outdoor raceways. Plastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems is increasing and plastic particles may adsorb and transport a diverse array of contaminants, thereby increasing their bioavailability to biota. This investigation aimed to evaluate the effects of varying polyethylene microplastics (PE MPs) and naphthalene (NAPH) concentrations on the survival and feeding rates of the model organism, Artemia salina, as well as NAPH adsorption to microplastics at different salinity levels (17, 75, 35.5 and 52.75 g L -1 ) under selected climate change scenarios. Survival (48 h) and feeding rates (6 h) of A. salina were also monitored, revealing that the presence of higher PE and NAPH concentrations lead to decreased survival rates while also increasing the number and size of microplastic particles in the saline solutions. Higher PE concentrations negatively affected A. salina feeding rates and NAPH concentrations were positively correlated with particle number and size, as well as with NAPH and PE adsorption rates in solution. Our findings demonstrate that the co-occurrence of microplastics and NAPH in aquatic environments can result in detrimental zooplankton survival and feeding rate effects. To explore the intrinsic influence of different salinity content on aniline biodegradation system in high temperature condition of 35 ± 1 °C, six groups at various salinity concentration (0.0%-5.0%) were applied. The results showed that the salinity exerted insignificant impact on aniline removal performance. The low-level salinity (0.5%-1.5%) stimulated the nitrogen metabolism performance. The G5-2.5% had excellent adaptability to salinity while the nitrogen removal capacity of G6-5.0% was almost lost. Moreover, high throughput sequencing analysis revealed that the g&#95;&#95;norank&#95;f&#95;&#95;NS9&#95;marine&#95;group, g&#95;&#95;Thauera and g&#95;&#95;unclassified&#95;f&#95;&#95;Rhodobacteraceae proliferated wildly and established positive correlation each other in low salinity systems. The dinoflagellate cysts present in the ballast water sediment of foreign ships in Shanghai Port have not been previously studied. Therefore, sediment samples were collected from the ballast water of 16 foreign ships in Shanghai Port, and the types of dinoflagellate cysts were identified and their abundance was calculated, with a specific focus on the analysis of toxic and harmful dinoflagellates. Moreover, simulations of temperature and salinity conditions throughout the year in the Shanghai port waters were conducted to carry out dinoflagellate cyst germination experiments, with analyze and compare the germinated dinoflagellate cysts under different conditions. Dinoflagellate cysts were found in 100 % of the ship sediment samples, including a total of 9 species of toxic and harmful dinoflagellate cysts. Rhizobacteria play a crucial role in plant growth and yield, stimulating primary production and improving stress resistance. Climate change has several consequences worldwide that affect arable land and agriculture. Studies on plant-soil-microorganism interactions to enhance plant productivity and/or resistance to abiotic stress may open new perspectives. This strategy aims to make agricultural-relevant plant species able to complete their biological cycle in extreme soils with the help of inoculated or primed plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). We provide an overview of the evolution of interest in PGPR research in the last 30 years through: (i) a quantitative search on the Scopus database; (ii) keyword frequencies and clustering analysis, and (iii) a keyword network and time-gradient analysis. The review of scientific literature on PGPR highlighted an increase in publications in the last 15 years, and a specific time gradient on subtopics, such as abiotic stresses. The rise in PGPR as a keyword co-occurring with salinity and drought stresses aligns with the growing number of papers from countries directly or partly affected by climate change. The study of PGPR, its features, and related applications will be a key challenge in the next decades, considering climate change effects on agriculture. The dynamics of hydrographic and biogeochemical properties in a Northwestern coastal area of the Adriatic Sea were investigated. The time series data from continuous observation (2007-2022) allowed the investigation of annual trends and seasonal cycles along a coastal transect influenced by local river discharge. Various statistical models were used to investigate water temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a, dissolved organic, inorganic and particulate nutrients, precipitation and river discharge. It was found that the local river discharge regime played an essential role in interannual, and seasonal biogeochemical dynamics associated with global climate change in the Mediterranean region. A significant trend towards oligotrophic conditions was detected, as evidenced by the downward trend in the river mouth and on the sea of chlorophyll a (-0.2 μg L -1 in the sea), dissolved organic and inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus (i.e., -0.43 μM yr -1 of DON in the sea and -6.67 of DIN μM yr -1 in the river mouth or -0.07 μM yr -1 of DOP and -0.02 μM yr -1 of DIP in the river mouth) and silicate (-2.47 μM yr -1 in the river mouth) concentrations. Salinity showed a long-term increase in the sea (0.08 yr -1 ), corresponding to a significant decrease in water discharge from the local river (-0.27 m 3  s -1 yr -1 ) and precipitation (-0.06 mm yr -1 ). The dissolved organic and inorganic nutrients highlighted a different seasonal accumulation under the river runoff regime. The nutrient enrichment was predominantly driven by river contribution. Biogeochemical processes mediated by plants and soil in coastal marshes are vulnerable to environmental changes and biological invasion. In particular, tidal inundation and salinity stress will intensify under future rising sea level scenarios. In this study, the interactive effects of flooding regimes (non-waterlogging vs. waterlogging) and salinity (0, 5, 15, and 30 parts per thousand (ppt)) on photosynthetic carbon allocation in plant, rhizodeposition, and microbial communities in native (Phragmites australis) and invasive (Spartina alterniflora) marshes were investigated using mesocosm experiments and 13 CO 2 pulse-labeling techniques. The results showed that waterlogging and elevated salinity treatments decreased specific root allocation (SRA) of 13 C, rhizodeposition allocation (RA) 13 C, soil 13 C content, grouped microbial PLFAs, and the fungal 13 C proportion relative to total PLFAs- 13 C. The lowest SRA, RA, and fungal 13 C proportion occurred under the combined waterlogging and high (30 ppt) salinity treatments. Relative to S. alterniflora, P. australis displayed greater sensitivity to hydrological changes, with a greater reduction in rhizodeposition, soil 13 C content, and fungal PLFAs. S. alterniflora showed an earlier peak SRA but a lower root/shoot 13 C ratio than P. australis. This suggests that S. alterniflora may transfer more photosynthetic carbon to the shoot and rhizosphere to facilitate invasion under stress. Waterlogging and high salinity treatments shifted C allocation towards bacteria over fungi for both plant species, with a higher allocation shift in S. alterniflora soil, revealing the species-specific microbial response to hydrological stresses. Potential shifts towards less efficient bacterial pathways might result in accelerated carbon loss. Over the study period, salinity was the primary driver for both species, explaining 33.2-50.8 % of 13 C allocation in the plant-soil-microbe system. Salinity is a critical environmental factor in marine ecosystems and has complex and wide-ranging biological effects. However, the effects of changing salinity on diversity and ecological functions of high nucleic acid (HNA) and low nucleic acid (LNA) bacteria are not well understood. In this study, we used 16S rRNA sequencing and metagenomic sequencing analysis to reveal the response of HNA and LNA bacterial communities and their ecological functions to salinity, which was decreased from 26 ‰ to 16 ‰. The results showed that salinity changes had significant effects on the community composition of HNA and LNA bacteria. Among LNA bacteria, 14 classes showed a significant correlation between relative abundance and salinity. Salinity changes can lead to the transfer of some bacteria from HNA bacteria to LNA bacteria. In the network topology relationship, the complexity of the network between HNA and LNA bacterial communities gradually decreased with decreased salinity. The abundance of some carbon and nitrogen cycling genes in HNA and LNA bacteria varied with salinity. The use of water purifiers is intensively catching up and disposing of reverse osmosis reject water is of great concern. Reject water management using conventional methods is costly and harmful to the environment. To address this issue, the present study aims to utilize reverse osmosis reject wastewater using an eco-friendly approach. Juncus rigidus was treated with reject wastewater containing different salinity levels. Wastewater-treated plant dry biomass increased with increasing reject water salinity, and 625.3 g dry biomass recovered in treatment-B (~18,520 ppm). However, ~23,220 ppm wastewater salinity was lethal to the plants. The cellulose was extracted by alkali hydrolysis. The cellulose content in the wastewater-treated biomass was significantly higher in Treatment-B compared to both the control and Treatment-A (~12,744 ppm). The water salinity enhanced the cellulose (26.49 %) production in J. rigidus. Cellulose purity was confirmed using spectroscopic and thermogravimetric means. XRD shows highest crystallinity Index (77.29) with a d-spacing of 4.7 Å and 5.7 nm crystallite size in treatment-B. FTIR results reveal well-defined relevant peaks for OH, CH, CO, CH 2 , C-O-C, CO groups in treatment-B cellulose. Salinity impacts carboxyl groups in treatment B cellulose with a sharper and intense peak at 1644 cm -1 responsible for water absorption. Treatment-B exhibits higher thermal stability due to increased crystallinity. DSC shows endothermic depolymerization of cellulose with distinct peaks for different treatments. Morphological traits got better with increasing salinity with no adverse effect on cellulose. Salinity moderately affected the water absorption capacity of cellulose. All cellulose samples were devoid of gram-negative bacteria known by microbial test. Soil is recognized as an important reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, the effect of salinity on the antibiotic resistome in saline soils remains largely misunderstood. In this study, high-throughput qPCR was used to investigate the impact of low-variable salinity levels on the occurrence, health risks, driving factors, and assembly processes of the antibiotic resistome. The results revealed 206 subtype ARGs across 10 categories, with medium-salinity soil exhibiting the highest abundance and number of ARGs. Among them, high-risk ARGs were enriched in medium-salinity soil. Further exploration showed that bacterial interaction favored the proliferation of ARGs. Meanwhile, functional genes related to reactive oxygen species production, membrane permeability, and adenosine triphosphate synthesis were upregulated by 6.9%, 2.9%, and 18.0%, respectively, at medium salinity compared to those at low salinity. With increasing salinity, the driver of ARGs in saline soils shifts from bacterial community to mobile gene elements, and energy supply contributed 28.2% to the ARGs at extreme salinity. As indicated by the neutral community model, stochastic processes shaped the assembly of ARGs communities in saline soils. Uca maracoani is a fiddler crab found in estuaries along the western Atlantic coast, with a notable preference for euhaline environments. This study aimed to analyze the population structure and dynamics of this species in an estuary on the North Coast of Brazil, specifically in an area of the upper estuary where seasonal rainfall fluctuations result in significant changes in salinity. Monthly crab samples were taken from December 2013 to November 2015, together with measurements of environmental variables, such as water and climate parameters. The population maintains a balanced sex ratio; however, males are generally larger, with lower mortality rates and longer lifespans than females. Reproduction is continuous but mainly takes place in the dry season when salinity levels are higher (above 12‰). Higher crab densities have been observed during the rainy season when, despite lower salinity levels (below 10‰), the conditions for survival (food availability and milder climate) seem to be more favorable. The estimated average annual biomass and production for the population were 2.62 g AFDM m -2 and 5.43 g AFDM m -2 year -1 , respectively, characterized by a high turnover rate (P/B = 2.10 year -1 ). The objective of this investigation is to assess the performance of various heat exchangers for application in a novel solar-powered zero liquid discharge humidification-dehumidification desalination system. In this study four heat exchangers (HX) having two different flow configurations namely counter flow (cf), cross flow (cr) made up of three different materials namely high-density polyethylene (HDPE), aluminum (Al), and Polypropelyne (PP) were compared in terms of their effectiveness and overall heat transfer coefficient under varying salinity levels (up to 10%) and mixing ratios (0.22-0.45). At a mixing ratio of 0.22 and 0% salinity, PP-HX cr and Al-HX cf exhibited similar effectiveness (∼85%), surpassing that of HDPE-HX cf (∼65%). Despite PP-HX cr 's lower thermal conductivity in comparison to Al-HXcf, comparable effectiveness was achieved due to the superior flow distribution in PP-HXcr. Further investigations focused on the impact of salinity on heat exchanger performance. At 3.5% salinity, all heat exchangers experienced a decline in effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient (HTC), with Al-HX cf experiencing a more pronounced decrease compared to PP-HX cr . The higher thermal conductivity of Al-HX cf led to greater salt accumulation, while PP-HX cr demonstrated minimal fouling. As the experiment progressed, fouling increased for all heat exchangers, with the Al-HX cf being practically ineffective at 10% salinity with an effectiveness below 10%. To address the issue of fouling, a rotating cross-flow heat exchanger (RPP-HX cr ) was introduced. While the effectiveness of the PP-HX cr drops from 85% to approximately 60% with increasing salinity from 0% to 10%, the RPP-HX cr demonstrates only a marginal decline in effectiveness with increasing salinity. For instance, at mixing ratio of 0.22 when the salinity is increased from 0% to 10%, the effectiveness of RPP-HX cr only drops from 83% to 77%. This exceptional performance was attributed to the continuous contact between the rotating tubes and the incoming feed, effectively preventing fouling and ensuring sustained efficiency. Soil salinization and sodification, the primary causes of land degradation and desertification in arid and semi-arid regions, demand effective monitoring for sustainable land management. This study explores the utility of partial least square (PLS) latent variables (LVs) derived from visible and near-infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy, combined with remote sensing (RS) and auxiliary variables, to predict electrical conductivity (EC) and sodium absorption ratio (SAR) in northern Xinjiang, China. Using 90 soil samples from the Karamay district, machine learning models (Random Forest, Support Vector Regression, Cubist) were tested in four scenarios. Modeling results showed that RS and Land use alone were unreliable predictors, but the addition of topographic attributes significantly improved the prediction accuracy for both EC and SAR. The incorporation of PLS LVs derived from Vis-NIR spectroscopy led to the highest performance by the Random Forest model for EC (CCC = 0.83, R 2  = 0.80, nRMSE = 0.48, RPD = 2.12) and SAR (CCC = 0.78, R 2  = 0.74, nRMSE = 0.58, RPD = 2.25). The variable importance analysis identified PLS LVs, certain topographic attributes (e.g., valley depth, elevation, channel network base level, diffuse insolation), and specific RS data (i.e., polarization index of VV + VH) as the most influential predictors in the study area. This study affirms the efficiency of Vis-NIR data for digital soil mapping, offering a cost-effective solution. Tidal wetlands play a critical role in emitting greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere; our understanding of the intricate interplay between natural processes and human activities shaping their biogeochemistry and GHG emissions remains lacking. In this study, we delve into the spatiotemporal dynamics and key drivers of the GHG emissions from five tidal wetlands in the Scheldt Estuary by focusing on the interactive impacts of salinity and water pollution, two factors exhibiting contrasting gradients in this estuarine system: pollution escalates as salinity declines. Our findings reveal a marked escalation in GHG emissions when moving upstream, primarily attributed to increased concentrations of organic matter and nutrients, coupled with reduced levels of dissolved oxygen and pH. These low water quality conditions not only promote methanogenesis and denitrification to produce CH 4 and N 2 O, respectively, but also shift the carbonate equilibria towards releasing more CO 2 . As a result, the most upstream freshwater wetland was the largest GHG emitter with a global warming potential around 35 to 70 times higher than the other wetlands. When moving seaward along a gradient of decreasing urbanization and increasing salinity, wetlands become less polluted and are characterized by lower concentrations of NO 3 , TN and TOC, which induces stronger negative impact of elevated salinity on the GHG emissions from the saline wetlands. Consequently, these meso-to polyhaline wetlands released considerably smaller amounts of GHGs. These findings emphasize the importance of integrating management strategies, such as wetland restoration and pollution prevention, that address both natural salinity gradients and human-induced water pollution to effectively mitigate GHG emissions from tidal wetlands.- , TN and TOC, which induces stronger negative impact of elevated salinity on the GHG emissions from the saline wetlands. Global climate change as well as human activities have been reported to increase the frequency and severity of both salinization and harmful algal blooms (HABs) in many freshwater systems, but their co-effect on benthic invertebrates has rarely been studied. This study simultaneously examined the joint toxicity of salinity and different cyanobacterial diets on the behavior, development, select biomarkers, and partial life cycle of Chironomus pallidivittatus (Diptera). High concentrations of salts (e.g., 1 g/L Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ ) and toxic Microcystis had synergistic toxicity, inhibiting development, burrowing ability and causing high mortality of C. pallidivittatus, especially for the Mg 2+ treatment, which caused around 90% death. Low Ca 2+ concentration (e.g., 0.01 g/L) promoted larval burrowing ability and inhibited toxin accumulation, which increased the tolerance of Chironomus to toxic Microcystis. However, low Mg 2+ concentration (e.g., 0.01 g/L) was shown to inhibit the behavior, development and increase algal toxicity to Chironomus. Toxic Microcystis resulted in microcystin (MC) accumulation, inhibited the burrowing ability of larvae, and increased the proportion of male adults (>50%). The combined toxicity level from low to high was verified by the weight of evidence and the grey TOPSIS model, which integrated five lines of evidence to increase the risk assessment accuracy and efficiency. This is the first study that provided insights into ecological risk arising from the joint effect of salinity and harmful algae on benthic organisms. Ammonia removal by nitrifiers at the extremely high salinity poses a great challenge for saline wastewater treatment. Sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was conducted with a stepwise increase of salinity from 10 to 40 g-NaCl·L -1 , while sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR) with one-step salinity enhancement, their nitrification performance, microbial structure and interaction were evaluated. Both SBR and SBBR can achieve high-efficiency nitrification (98% ammonia removal) at 40 g-NaCl·L -1 . However, SBBR showed more stable nitrification performance than SBR at 40 g-NaCl·L -1 after a shorter adaptation period of 4-15 d compared to previous studies. High-throughput sequencing and metagenomic analysis demonstrated that the abundance and capability of conventional ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (Nitrosomonas) were suppressed in SBBR relative to SBR. Gelidibacter, Anaerolineales were the predominant genus in SBBR, which were not found in SBR. NorB and nosZ responsible for reducing NO to N 2 O and reducing N 2 O to N 2 respectively had s strong synergistic effect in SBBR. In recent years, saline-alkaline aquaculture development has become an important measure for China to expand its fishery development space to ensure food safety. Previous studies have verified that salinity and alkalinity positively influence the quality of Chinese mitten crabs (Eriocheir sinensis). However, the regulatory mechanism of E. sinensis endures saline-alkaline stress which remains obscure. This study investigated the metabolic changes in puberty-molting E. sinensis gills exposed to freshwater (FW), sodium chloride salinity of 5 ppt (SW), and carbonate alkalinity 10.00 mmol/L (AW) for 50 days using untargeted liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry metabolomics (LC-MS). A total of 5802 (positive-ion mode) and 6520 (negative-ion mode) peaks were extracted by LC-MS, respectively. A total of 188 (50 upregulated and 138 downregulated), 141 (94 upregulated and 47 downregulated), and 130 (87 upregulated and 43 downregulated) significantly regulated metabolites (SRMs) were observed in the FW-SW, FW-AW, and SW-AW treatments, respectively, wherein 42 generic SRMs were also found by Venn diagram analysis. Seven of the top 10 SRMs with the highest (variable importance in projection) VIP values were similarly identified in FW-SW and SW-AW. Integrated analysis of key metabolic pathways revealed glycerophospholipid, choline in cancer, phenylalanine, and butanoate metabolism. Overall, significant differences were observed in the metabolites and key metabolic pathways of E. sinensis gill exposed to salinity and alkalinity stress. The main purpose of the present research is to propose a comprehensive attitude of the salinity in groundwater resources of Iran using 116 papers in the assessment of groundwater quality in different areas of the country. The conducted study contains the measurement of the values of physicochemical parameters of which electrical conductivity (EC), as the fundamental parameter for salinity determination of groundwater, was considered mostly, and by comparing it with standards, as well as employing the Wilcox diagram, the quality of water was assessed for drinking and agricultural purposes, respectively. Study of the previous papers revealed that in only the west and northwest of the country, the groundwater quality was suitable for drinking, and in the majority of provinces, EC values exceeded the recommended limits. The highest EC level was seen in central provinces which led to the aggravation of groundwater and the largest proportion of salinity, putting the quality of water in an unsuitable class for drinking. Additionally, the assessment of groundwater quality for irrigation uses using the Wilcox diagram showed high and very high salinity rates in most areas of the study area. Northwestern provinces relatively had the lowest level putting in C3–S1 class, while central areas reached the highest with C4–S4 classification. Deficiency of rainfall, high rate of groundwater exploitation, and the intrusion of saltwater from Salt Lake were the principal reasons for groundwater deterioration in central parts of the study area. Species in estuaries tend to undergo both cadmium (Cd) and low salinity stress. However, how low salinity affects the Cd toxicity has not been fully understood. Investigating the impacts of low salinity on the dose-response relationships between Cd and biological endpoints has potential to enhance our understanding of the combined effects of low salinity and Cd. In this work, changes in the transcriptomes of Pacific oysters were analyzed following exposure to Cd (5, 20, 80 μg/L Cd 2+ ) under normal (31.4 psu) and low (15.7 psu) salinity conditions, and then the dose-response relationship between Cd and transcriptome was characterized in a high-throughput manner. The benchmark dose (BMD) of gene expression, as a point of departure (POD), was also calculated based on the fitted dose-response model. We found that low salinity treatment significantly influenced the dose-response relationships between Cd and transcripts in oysters indicated by altered dose-response curves. In details, a total of 219 DEGs were commonly fitted to best models under both normal and low salinity conditions. Nearly three quarters of dose-response curves varied with salinity condition. Some monotonic dose-response curves in normal salinity condition even were replaced by nonmonotonic curves in low salinity condition. Low salinity treatment decreased the PODs of differentially expressed genes induced by Cd, suggesting that gene differential expression was more prone to being triggered by Cd in low salinity condition. Saline soils are widely distributed in arid areas but there is a lack of mechanistic understanding on the effect of salinity on the formation and biochemical composition of soil organic carbon (SOC). We investigated the effects of salinity on the accumulation of microbial necromass under natural vegetation and in cropland in salt-affected arid areas stretching over a 1200-km transect in northwest China. Under both natural vegetation and cropland, microbial physiological activity (indicated by microbial biomass carbon normalized enzymatic activity) decreased sharply where the electrical conductivity approached 4 ds m -1 (a threshold to distinguish between saline and non-saline soils), but microbial biomass was only slightly affected by salinity. These indicated that a larger proportion of microbes could be inactive or dormant in saline soils. The contribution of fungal necromass C to SOC decreased but the contribution of bacterial necromass C to the SOC increased with increasing soil salinity. Adding fungal and bacterial necromass C together, the contribution of microbial necromass C to SOC in saline soils was 32-39 % smaller compared with non-saline soils. Fungal necromass C took up 85-86 % of microbial necromass C in non-saline soils but this proportion dropped to 60-66 % in saline soils. We suggested that the activity, growth, and turnover rate of microbes slowed by salinity was responsible for the decreased accumulation of fungal necromass in saline compared with non-saline soils, while the increased accumulation of bacterial residue in saline soils could be induced mainly by its slower decomposition. Soil microbial biomass was a poor predictor for the accumulation of microbial necromass in saline soils. We demonstrated a reduced contribution of microbial necromass to SOC and a shift in its composition towards the increase in bacterial origin in saline relative to non-saline soils. Industrial wastewater often has high levels of salt, either due to seawater or e.g. sodium chloride (NaCl) usage in the processing. Previous work indicated that aerobic granular sludge (AGS) is differently affected by seawater or saline water at similar osmotic strength. Here we investigate in more detail the impact of NaCl concentrations and seawater on the granulation and conversion processes for AGS wastewater treatment. Glycerol was used as the carbon source since it is regularly present in industrial wastewaters, and to allow the evaluation of microbial interactions that better reflect real conditions. Long-term experiments were performed to evaluate and compare the effect of salinity on granulation, anaerobic conversions, phosphate removal, and the microbial community. Smooth and stable granules as well as enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) were achieved up to 20 g/L NaCl or when using seawater. However, at NaCl levels comparable to seawater strength (30 g/L) incomplete anaerobic glycerol uptake and aerobic phosphate uptake were observed, the effluent turbidity increased, and filamentous granules began to appear. The latter is likely due to the direct aerobic growth on the leftover substrate after the anaerobic feeding period. In all reactor conditions, except the reactor with 30 g/L NaCl, Ca. Accumulibacter was the dominant microorganism. In the reactor with 30 g/L NaCl, the relative abundance of Ca. Accumulibacter decreased to ≤1 % and an increase in the genus Zoogloea was observed. Throughout all reactor conditions, Tessaracoccus and Micropruina, both actinobacteria, were present which were likely responsible for the anaerobic conversion of glycerol into volatile fatty acids. None of the glycerol metabolizing proteins were detected in Ca. Accumulibacter which supports previous findings that glycerol can not be directly utilized by Ca. Accumulibacter. The proteome profile of the dominant taxa was analysed and the results are further discussed. The exposure of salt-adapted biomass to hypo-osmotic conditions led to significant trehalose and PO 4 3- -P release which can be related to the osmoregulation of the cells. Overall, this study provides insights into the effect of salt on the operation and stability of the EBPR and AGS processes. Steeper and sometimes extreme salinity gradients increasingly affect aquatic organisms because of climate change. Hypersalinity habitats demand powerful physiological adaptive strategies. Few teleost species have the capacity to spend their whole life cycle in salinities way over seawater levels. Focusing on the multifunctional gill, we unraveled the tilapia S. melanotheron key strategies to cope with different environmental conditions, ranging from freshwater up to hypersaline habitats. De novo transcriptome assembly based on RNAseq allowed for the analysis of 40,967 annotated transcripts among samples collected in three wild populations at 0, 40 and 80 ‰. A trend analysis of the expression patterns revealed responses across the salinity gradient with different gene pathways involved. Genes linked to ion transport, pH regulation and cell surface receptor signaling were mainly upregulated in the high salinity habitat. We identified tight junction proteins that were critical in high salinity habitats and that were different from the well-known tightening junctional proteins identified and expressed in fresh water. Expression profiles also suggest a change in the vascular tone that could be linked to an osmorespiratory compromise not only in fresh water, but also in high salinity environments. A striking downregulation of genes linked to the immune system and to the heat shock response was observed suggesting an energetic trade-off between immunity and acclimation/adaptation in the hypersaline habitat. The high expression of transcripts coding for immune and heat shock response in the freshwater habitat suggests the establishment of powerful mechanisms to protect gills from environmental threats and to maintain protein integrity. Non-directional expression trends were also detected with an upregulation of genes only in the hypersaline habitat (80 ‰) or only in the marine habitat (40 ‰). The key to the resource recycling of saline wastes in form of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) is to enrich mixed cultures with salt tolerance and PHA synthesis ability. However, the comparison of saline sludge from different sources and the salt tolerance mechanisms of salt-tolerant PHA producers need to be clarified. In this study, three kinds of activated sludge from different salinity environments were selected as the inoculum to enrich salt-tolerant PHA producers under aerobic dynamic feeding (ADF) mode with butyric acid dominated mixed volatile fatty acid as the substrate. The maximum PHA content (PHAm) reached 0.62 ± 0.01, 0.62 ± 0.02, and 0.55 ± 0.03 g PHA/g VSS at salinity of 0.5%, 0.8%, and 1.8%, respectively. Microbial community analysis indicated that Thauera, Paracoccus, and Prosthecobacter were dominant salt-tolerant PHA producers at low salinity, Thauera, NS9&#95;marine, and SM1A02 were dominant salt-tolerant PHA producers at high salinity. High salinity and ADF mode had synergistic effects on selection and enrichment of salt-tolerant PHA producers. Combined correlation network with redundancy analysis indicated that trehalose synthesis genes and betaine related genes had positive correlation with PHAm, while extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) content had negative correlation with PHAm. The compatible solutes accumulation and EPS secretion were the main salt tolerance mechanisms of the PHA producers. This study aims to thoroughly investigate the impact mode of salinity carried by industrial wastewater on the anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A 2 O) sludge in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Through comprehensive investigation of the A 2 O stage activated sludge (AS) from 19 industrial WWTPs in the downstream area of the Yangtze River, China, A total of 38 samples of anaerobic sludge and oxic sludge were collected and analyzed. We found that salinity stress significantly inhibits the growth of the AS community, particularly evident in the anaerobic sludge community. Furthermore, the high-saline environment induces changes in the structure and functional patterns of the AS community, leading to intensive interactions and resource exchanges among microorganisms. Halophilic microorganisms may play a crucial role in this process, significantly impacting the overall community structure, especially in the oxic sludge community. Additionally, salinity stress not only suppresses the nitrogen transformation potential of the AS but also leads to the accumulation of nitrite, thereby increasing the emission potential of both NO and N 2 O, exacerbating the greenhouse effect of the A 2 O process in industrial WWTPs. The widespread usage of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) as disinfectants during the COVID-19 pandemic poses significant environmental risks, such as toxicity to organisms and the emergence of superbugs. In this study, different inorganic salts (NaCl, KCl, CaCl 2 , MgCl 2 ) were used to induce endophytes LSE01 isolated from hyperaccumulating plants. After five generations of cultivation under 80 g/L NaCl, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of LSE01 to QACs increased by about 3-fold, while its degradation extent increased from 8% to 84% for C 12 BDMA-Cl and 5%-89% for C 14 BDMA-Cl. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and three-dimensional fluorescence spectra indicated that the cells induced by high concentration of salt caused plasmolysis and secreted more bound extracellular polymeric substances (B-EPS); these changes are likely to be an important reason for the observed increased resistance and enhanced degradation extent of LSE01 to QACs. Salinity fluctuations significantly impact the reproduction, growth, development, as well as physiological and metabolic activities of fish. To explore the osmoregulation mechanism of aquatic organisms acclimating to salinity stress, the physiological and transcriptomic characteristics of spotted seabass (Lateolabrax maculatus) in response to varying salinity gradients were investigated. In this study, different salinity stress exerted inhibitory effects on lipase activity, while the impact on amylase activity was not statistically significant. Notably, a moderate increase in salinity (24 psu) demonstrated the potential to enhance the efficient utilization of proteins by spotted seabass. Both Na + /K + -ATPase and malondialdehyde showed a fluctuating trend of increasing and then decreasing, peaking at 72 h. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that most differentially expressed genes were involved in energy metabolism, signal transduction, the immune response, and osmoregulation.
