It is likely that climate change will increase irrigation water demand and, consequently, reduces water security in the Mediterranean Basin if current irrigation supply and demand conditions are maintained. Climate change adaptation can be achieved by (1) decreasing irrigation water demand through more efficient irrigation techniques, (2) increasing irrigation water supply by adopting new technological advances, (3) converting to rainfed agriculture, and (4) implementation of Nature-based Solutions for water retention. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of different combinations of these adaptation options on water security through analysis of contrasting scenarios of socio-economic development. We defined plausible scenarios of climate change, land use change and adaptation measures for an intensively irrigated catchment in south-eastern Spain under three Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP), representing different storylines of socio-economic development. We considered three SSP scenarios, including the Sustainability pathway (SSP1), the Middle of the Road pathway (SSP2) and the Fossil-fueled Development pathway (SSP5). Future land use distributions were obtained with the iClue land use change model by accounting for differences in irrigation water demand and supply, resulting in a decrease (SSP1), a constant (SSP2) and an increase (SSP5) in irrigated agriculture. The impact of each scenario on a series of water security indicators was quantified using the SPHY-MMF hydrology-soil erosion model. The SSP2 scenario, which considers very limited climate change adaptation, projects the most severe impacts on water security, including an increase in plant water stress, flood discharge, hillslope erosion and sediment yield. Under SSP1, which accounts for most climate change adaptation strategies, irrigation water demand is significantly reduced due to a shift from irrigated to rainfed agriculture and the implementation of reduced deficit irrigation, while Nature-based Solutions reduce the impact on other water security indicators. Under SSP5, a conversion from rainfed to irrigated agriculture causes a significant increase in irrigation water demand, which is met by increasing irrigation water supply from desalination. SSP5 shows intermediate impacts on other water security indicators, which is explained by a strong decrease in annual precipitation. This study helps exploring how different future socio-economic pathways affect water security and thereby supports evidence-based policy development. The water sustainability of the Segura River Basin (SRB), located in southeastern Spain, is being challenged as conventional available water sources fall short of meeting the authorised demands of the basin. In recent years, non-conventional water (NCW), such as desalinated and reclaimed water, has become part of the resource pool. However, it has not yet become crucial for irrigation water supply due to its relatively high cost and lower quality compared to conventional water. The new political framework in Spain, developed in the context of ecological transition, marks a notable shift for non-conventional water as a strategic resource for agriculture. This study examines the drivers and barriers influencing its acceptance through an analysis of farmers' perceptions, conducted through interviews with twelve irrigation communities' (ICs) representatives of the basin. Discriminant analyses of the data show that the farmers' experience, along with factors pertaining to production, storage, and transportation costs, determines the acceptance and use of NCW. This article explores how irrigation farmer (regante) subjectivities are constructed in direct conjunction with the production of modernist–capitalist hydrosocial territories across the Tagus and Segura river basins in central and south-east Spain. We explore the complexities and contradictions of how, at various scales of governance, authorities establish and seek to realize ideal regante subjects across time and space. We mobilize a hydrosocial territory approach, combined with feminist political ecology and hegemony literature, to explore how such ideal subjects are built through Spanish and regional legislation and policies from 1866 to 2023. Through interviews with regantes in six irrigation communities, we identify different ideal and actual regante subjects in territories interconnected by the Tagus–Segura Aqueduct. We analyze how policy shifts lead to multiple and contradictory roles and responsibilities for regante subjects, which are linked to plot modernization, agricultural professionalization, and farmer rejuvenation. These sharpen divisions between smallholders and emerging large capitalist actors. Counterhegemonic territorial proposals resist these pressures by embodying alternative values and imaginaries. We conclude that through such counterhegemonic struggles, subject construction is enriched, identifying real-life existing and future alternatives for more just hydrosocial territories. Historical cartography is one of the principal tools used in correct flood adaptation and management based on territorial planning. In fact, Directive 2007/60/EC on the assessment and management of flood risks includes the analysis and inventory of historical floods in a river basin for assessing the flood hazard and risk existing in a geographical space. This study seeks to analyse the largest flood registered in the Segura basin, occurring on 14–15 October 1879, which attracted enormous interest on a national and international level. The methodology applied is based on the consultation of historical sources and historical cartography, and the elaboration of maps using GIS, enabling comparisons to be made with current flood zones. The results show that the Santa Teresa flood was very similar to the Spanish National Cartographic Systems for Flood Areas (SNCZI) map for a 500-year return period. Furthermore, it allows the identification of the sensitive points along the course of the river or those prone to burst banks or overflowing, which practically coincide with the current maps and modelling conducted by the official bodies. Furthermore, the buildings in the floodable area in the historical cartography have been counted and reconstructed on a GIS map and the SNCZI. Massive anthropic occupation through the construction of settlements and infrastructures (hospitals, schools, centers for the elderly, roads and railways) in the Guadalentín valley and the Segura River increases the risk of flooding in the study area, despite the numerous control and regulation works carried out in the Segura River basin. This study explores cultural ecosystem services (CES) provided by five arid watersheds of south-eastern Spain using the image social network Flickr. A total of 652 georeferenced photos were selected, uploaded by 174 authors. The most representative CES in each photo was identified. The relationships between the identified CES and the landscape elements and land uses represented by photos, as well as the CES associated with the protected areas of the study watersheds were examined by statistical and descriptive analyses. The results revealed that the CES most represented were aesthetic associated with water bodies, shrubs, native flora, trees and mountains; existence value with native fauna; inspiration associated with rocks and snow; and sense of place with natural and anthropised landscapes. Significant differences in aesthetic and existence value were found between photographs taken inside and outside protected areas. The use of photographs uploaded to social media in dryland is useful for exploring the landscape elements of greatest interest to citizens (e.g., landscapes, biodiversity) and some CES (e.g., aesthetic). However, other CES such as existential or inspirational value may be biased by subjective criteria of the researcher and due to the socio-cultural profile of the people who upload photographs to these networks.
