The West Liao River (WLR) and Yellow River (YR) basins are two major centers of millet farming in northern China. The result from flotation analyses and the spatial distribution of archeological sites indicate that two distinct survival strategies—agriculture and pastoralism were adopted in the southern and western regions of the WLR. Previous studies of ancient populations from the western area of the WLR suggested a correlation between a pastoral economy in the Bronze Age Upper Xiajiadian culture with a decreased genetic affinity with YR farmers. However, the population history of the southern WLR is unknown mainly due to the lack of ancient genetic data. Here we report the genomic data of an ancient individual from the Majiazishan site from the Late Bronze Age southern WLR region associated with Upper Xiajiadian culture. Unlike individuals from western WLR, this individual derived ancestry entirely from Late Neolithic YR farmers. We found a genetic substructure of the ancient human population of Upper Xiajiadian culture, which is consistent with the differences in the subsistence strategies of western and southern WLR. Climate deterioration led to different populations occupying the west and the south, respectively, in the WLR: the nomadic population from the Amur River (AR) in the west and the agricultural population from the YR in the south. Persistent organic pollutants pose a great threat to amphibian populations, but information on the bioaccumulation of contaminants in amphibians remains scarce. To examine the tissue distribution and maternal transfer of organic halogenated pollutants (OHPs) in frogs, seven types of tissues from black‐spotted frog (muscle, liver, kidney, stomach, intestine, heart, and egg) were collected from an e‐waste–polluted area in South China. Among the seven frog tissues, median total OHP concentrations of 2.3 to 9.7 μg/g lipid weight were found (in 31 polychlorinated biphenyl [PCB] individuals and 15 polybrominated diphenyl ether [PBDE], dechlorane plus [syn‐DP and anti‐DP], bexabromobenzene [HBB], polybrominated biphenyl] PBB153 and ‐209], and decabromodiphenyl ethane [DBDPE] individuals). Sex‐specific differences in contaminant concentration and compound compositions were observed among the frog tissues, and eggs had a significantly higher contaminant burden on the whole body of female frogs. In addition, a significant sex difference in the concentration ratios of other tissues to the liver was observed in most tissues except for muscle. These results suggest that egg production may involve the mobilization of other maternal tissues besides muscle, which resulted in the sex‐specific distribution. Different parental tissues had similar maternal transfer mechanisms; factors other than lipophilicity (e.g., molecular size and proteinophilic characteristics) could influence the maternal transfer of OHPs in frogs. The efficacy of different echinocandins is assessed by evaluating the in vitro activity of a novel antifungal, rezafungin, against invasive fungal isolates in comparison with anidulafungin and caspofungin. Using the broth microdilution (BMD) method, the susceptibility of 1000 clinical Candida isolates (including 400 C. albicans, 200 C. glabrata, 200 C. parapsilosis, 150 C. tropicalis and 50 C. krusei) and 150 Aspergillus isolates (100 A. fumigatus and 50 A. flavus) from the Eastern China Invasive Fungi Infection Group (ECIFIG) was tested for the antifungals including anidulafungin, rezafungin, caspofungin and fluconazole. The echinocandins showed strong activity against C. albicans that was maintained against fluconazole-resistant isolates. The GM MIC (geometric mean minimum inhibitory concentration) value of rezafungin was found to be comparable to that of anidulafungin or caspofungin against the five tested common Candida species. C. tropicalis exhibited higher resistance rates (about 8.67–40.67% in different antifungals) than the other four Candida species. Through the sequencing of FKS genes, we searched for mutations in echinocandin-resistant C. tropicalis isolates and found that all displayed alterations in FKS1 S654P. The determined MEC (minimal effective concentration) values against A. fumigatus and A. flavus for rezafungin (0.116 μg/mL, 0.110 μg/mL) are comparable to those of caspofungin (0.122 μg/mL, 0.142 μg/mL) but higher than for anidulafungin (0.064 μg/mL, 0.059 μg/mL). Thus, the in vitro activity of rezafungin appears comparable to anidulafungin and caspofungin against most common Candida and Aspergillus species. Cryospheric responses to climate warming include glacier retreat, altitude‐dependent thermal instability, and abundant meltwater, which increase the frequency of catastrophic glacier hazard chain (CGHC) events. Here we investigated the formation mechanism of a special CGHC event in 2018, in the Sedongpu Glacier, Eastern Himalayas, China. Based on the multi‐source remote sensing, seismic signal analysis, and numerical simulation, we conducted long‐term retrospective analysis and co‐event process reconstruction. The results show that the event could be divided into two phases. First, the hanging glacier with a volume of 8.5 × 106 m3 collapsed onto the downstream trunk glacier. Next, ∼1.17 × 108 m3 eroded materials from the impacted glacier transformed into debris flow and traveled downstream 8 km. During the cascading process, ice‐rock avalanche momentum and glacier velocity are key factors in determining CGHC formation and eventual volume. Our study helps better understand the domino effects of the CGHC disaster. Plain Language Summary: Glacier instability in cryosphere is significantly influenced by global warming. The glacial lake outburst floods are the most widely studied and catastrophic events resulting from this instability, but they are not the only ones. In recent years, increasing catastrophic glacier hazard chain (CGHC) events have reminded us of disasters during climate warming, especially in the Himalayas region. Here, we report a typical CGHC event in the Eastern Himalayas, where the retreated glaciers are widely distributed. Based on our observations and simulations, we completed the retrospective analysis of CGHC through its formation conditions, evolution process, and specific kinematic process. These analyses help us understand the driving mechanism, the volume‐increasing effect, and the super‐fluidity of CGHC. Our findings help improve such hazard chain identification and mitigation in the Eastern Himalayas and glacierized environments elsewhere in the world. Diplogyniopsis fluctuosumsp. nov. associated with passalid beetles is described based on females from China on undermined passalid beetles, as well as on females and males from Thailand on Aceraius helferi (Coleoptera: Passalidae). We investigated 14 antibiotic residues in 8 marketed freshwater fish species from southeast China and estimated the associated health risks to local consumers. The antibiotic residues were determined by UPLC-MS/MS. Our findings revealed widespread distribution of quinolones (QNs), tetracyclines (TCs), and chloramphenicols (CAPs) in the freshwater fish. Notably, the average concentrations of enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin reached levels as high as 62.5 μg/kg wet weight (ww) and 11.7 μg/kg ww, respectively, and detection frequencies were 68.7% for enrofloxacin and 31.6% for ciprofloxacin. Additionally, we detected chloramphenicol, a prohibited antibiotic, in samples with a detection frequency of 0.76%. Among the fish species, the mean concentration of total antibiotic residues was highest in bluntnose black bream (263.3 μg/kg), followed by English perch (52.4 μg/kg), crucian carp (46.3 μg/kg), black carp (28.6 μg/kg), yellowcheek carp (21.0 μg/kg), grass carp (15.3 μg/kg), bighead carp (3.78 μg/kg), and mandarin fish (3.69 μg/kg). We estimated the daily intake values of these antibiotic residues which were lower than the acceptable daily intake values and hazard indexes were much less than 1. It indicates that there is very low direct health risk to consumers. Five species of Unionicola Haldeman, 1842 (Acari: Hydrachnidia: Unionicolidae) were collected between 2018 and 2019. Notably, Unionicola (Armatax) armata Walter, 1929, previously unrecorded in China, is now documented for the first time in the country. Additionally, Unionicola newsumi Wiles, 1999 has been reclassified and assigned to the new subgenus Vespicola within the genus Unionicola Haldeman, 1842. These findings also led to the establishment of three new subgenera: Micronodusgen. nov., Vespicolagen. nov., and Lingshuiataxgen. nov. including four species: Unionicola soluplatussp. nov. U. jinisp. nov. U. caudipessp. nov. and U. armatallasp. nov. This marks the first description and documentation of these subgenera and species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This study aimed to provide epidemiological features of Salmonella enterica serovar Rissen, determine antimicrobial susceptibility, virulence gene profiles, and describe the potential association of S. Rissen from different sources in China. Methods: During 2008– 2019, a total of non-repetitive 228 S. Rissen isolates were collected from human, animals and environment in China. The antimicrobial susceptibility test, screening of antimicrobial and virulence genes by PCR, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) were performed. Results: Among the 154 isolates from human, the majority of the cases (80.5%) occurred in summer, and S. Rissen was mainly detected in people aged 21– 40 (37.7%) and 41– 60 (28.6%) years old, and 74 non-human source S. Rissen strains were identified, with pork being the most common source. About 93.4% isolates were resistant to at least one of the 12 tested antimicrobial agents, and high frequencies of resistance were observed for tetracyclines (91.2%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (74.1%) and ampicillin (67.5%). A total of 171 (75%) isolates were resistant to at least three categories of antimicrobials, and the most common resistance profile was Tetracycline(s)-β-Lactams-Sulfonamides. The resistance rates to chloramphenicol, quinolones and sulfafurazole were significantly higher in strains isolated from human compared to non-human source strains. Among these isolates, the β-Lactams resistance was mainly associated with gene blaTEM (54.7%), sulfonamide resistance with sul2 (45.7%) and sul3 (54.3%), tetracycline resistance with tetA (81.3%). All the isolates harbored virulence genes hilA, sopB, sciN, stn and ssrB, and most of them harbored ssaQ (98.7%), mgtC (98.7%) and invA (98.2%). The majority (91.7%) of S. Rissen isolates showed high similarity (> 80%) with each other in PFGE patterns and came from human, animals and environment. Conclusion: The high frequencies of multidrug resistance and probable clonal dissemination in this serovar call for the necessity of systematic surveillance on S. Rissen in China. The health effects of urbanization are controversial. The association between urbanization and reversible subclinical risks of cardiovascular diseases (e.g., electrocardiogram (ECG) abnormalities) has rarely been studied. This study aimed to assess the association between urbanization and ECG abnormalities in China based on the China National Stroke Screening Survey (CNSSS). We used changes in the satellite-measured impervious surfaces rate and nighttime light data to assess the level of urbanization. Every interquartile increment in the impervious surfaces rate or nighttime light was related to a decreased risk of ECG abnormalities, with odds ratios of 0.894 (95% CI, 0.869–0.920) or 0.809 (95% CI, 0.772–0.847), respectively. And we observed a U-shaped nonlinear exposure–response relationship curve between the impervious surfaces rate and ECG abnormalities. In conclusion, the current average level of urbanization among the studied Chinese adults remains a beneficial factor for reducing cardiovascular risks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose. To assess the differences in accommodation and binocular vision in children with myopic anisometropia and determine the correlation with anisometropia. Method. A total of 110 patients with myopia aged 8–15 years were recruited from June 2021 to February 2022 from the Affiliated Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University. Based on the interocular differences of spherical equivalent refraction, patients were divided into the isometropia (35 children), low anisometropia (LA group, 42 children), and high anisometropia (HA group, 33 children). The variables assessed were refraction, heterophoria, amplitude of accommodation (AMP), accommodative response (AR), gradient AC/A, positive and negative relative accommodation (PRA/NRA), and near stereopsis in the three groups. Pearson's correlation coefficient tests were used to investigate the possible association between each parameter and interocular differences (IODs). Results. Among 110 subjects, there were 49 males and 61 females with a mean age of 11.39 ± 2.28 years. Compared with those in the isometropia group, AMP was lower and near stereopsis was higher in the LA group, and the distance and near heterophoria, PRA, AR, and near stereopsis were higher, and PRA, AMP, and gradient AC/A were lower in the HA group (all P < 0.05). Compared with those in the LA group, the near stereopsis, AR, and the near stereopsis were higher in the HA group, and the gradient AC/A was lower (all P < 0.05). However, no significant differences existed in the negative relative accommodation (P > 0.05). The distance and near heterophoria, AR, AMP, and near stereopsis were observed to be correlated with IODs, respectively (r = −0.259, p = 0.006 ; r = −0.201, p = 0.036 ; r = 0.306, p = 0.001 ; r = −0.315, p = 0.001 ; r = 0.535, p < 0.001). Conclusion. Our results suggested that with the increase of anisometropia, distance and near heterophoria, AR, AMP, and near stereopsis had a tendency to get worse in children with myopic anisometropia. Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) and dechlorane plus (DP) have been widely used as alternatives to traditional BFRs. However, little is known about the temporal trends of NBFR and DP pollution in e-waste recycling sites. In the current study, three composite sediment cores were collected from an e-waste-polluted pond located in a typical e-waste recycling site in South China to investigate the historical occurrence and composition of NBFRs and DP. The NBFRs and DP were detected in all layers of the sediment cores with concentration ranges of 5.71~180,895 and 4.95~109,847 ng/g dw, respectively. Except for 2,3,5,6-tetrabromo-p-xylene (pTBX) and 2,3,4,5,6-pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB), all the NBFR compounds and DP showed a clear increasing trend from the bottom to top layers. These results implied the long-term and severe contamination of NBFRs and DP. Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) was the most abundant NBFR with the contribution proportions of 58 ± 15%, 73 ± 15%, and 71 ± 18% in three sediment cores, followed by 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE) and pentabromobenzene (HBB). The ratios of BTBPE/Octa-BDEs and DBDPE/Deca-BDEs varied from 0.12 to 60 and from 0.03 to 0.49, respectively, which had no clear increase trends with a decrease in sediment depth. As for DP, the fanti values (the concentration ratios of anti-DP to the sum of anti-DP and syn-DP) in sediment cores ranged from 0.41 to 0.83, almost falling in the range of those in DP technical products, suggesting that DP degradation did not occur in sediment cores. The environmental burdens of DBDPE, BTBPE, HBB, PBT, PBEB, pTBX, and DP were estimated to be 34.0, 5.67, 10.1, 0.02, 0.02, 0.01, and 34.8 kg, respectively. Electrocardiogram (ECG) outcomes serve as early manifestations of cardiovascular functional or structural changes. While temperature fluctuation has been demonstrated to be a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, few epidemiological studies have reported its relationship with ECG outcomes. In this study, we employed temperature anomaly (TA) as an innovative indicator of temperature fluctuation to quantify its detrimental impacts on ECG outcomes. A longitudinal study design was conducted using the repeated ECG records of the China National Stroke Screening Survey from 2013 to 2019. Only individuals undergoing at least two ECG tests were included. The daily temperature was assimilated by combining three kinds of data: in situ observations, satellite remote sensing measurements and weather research forecast simulations. We used generalized estimating equations to control for autocorrelation among repeated records and to estimate the association between TA and the risk of ECG abnormalities. We found 6837 events of ECG abnormalities in 47,286 individuals with 102,030 visits. Each unit increment of TA increased the risk of ECG abnormalities [odds ratio (OR) = 1.009, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.001–1.017] and the risk of myocardial ischemia (OR = 1.061, 95% CI: 1.012–1.111). Hierarchic analyses presented a similar association of TA with both ECG abnormalities (OR = 1.017, 95% CI: 1.008–1.026) and myocardial ischemia (OR = 1.061, 95%CI: 1.011–1.114) in Northern China, but not in Southern China. The exposure-response relationship was estimated as a U-shaped curve centered at the TA value of zero. Sudden warming tended to increase the risk of ECG abnormalities and myocardial ischemia, and sudden cooling tended to increase the risk of atrial fibrillation. All these detrimental effects of TA could be modified by specific individual characteristics. In summary, ambient temperature fluctuation increased the risk of ECG abnormalities. Insufficient light radiation is one of the main factors limiting maize yield in southern China. The plum rainy season overlaps with grain filling stage, and intermittent cloudy and rainy weather results in weak-light stress restricting the yield improvement of fresh waxy maize. This study was to assess the impact of weak-light stress at different grain filling stages on yield and leaf carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) metabolism in fresh waxy maize. Suyunuo5 (SYN5) and Jingkenuo2000 (JKN2000) were used to investigate the effects of weak-light at different stages after pollination (1–7, 8–14, 15–21 and 1–21 days, recorded as Z1, Z2, Z3 and Z4) on yield, dry matter and nitrogen (N) accumulation, C and N metabolism in leaf of fresh waxy maize from 2021 to 2022. Compared with CK (natural light treatment), weak-light decreased the fresh ear and grain yield, post-silking dry matter and N accumulation, and the decrease was maximum in Z4, followed by Z1. The decrease in JKN2000 was greater than SYN5. RUBPCase and PEPCase activities, net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate and stomatal conductance of ear leaves decreased under weak-light, and those were lowest in Z4, followed by Z1. Furthermore, weak-light stress significantly decreased the activities of nitrate reductase, glutamine synthetase, glutamate synthase, and post-silking N accumulation. The highest decrease was found in Z4, followed by Z1. Weak-light stress also downregulated the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase and raised MDA content in ear leaves during grain filling stage, which accelerated leaf senescence process. Weak-light stress after pollination decreased maize yield by affecting leaf C and N metabolism and antioxidant system, and the stress occurred in first week after pollination had a more severe impact than those in middle and later stages, and JKN2000 was more sensitive to weak-light than SYN5. Our results contributed to understanding how weak-light stress could reduce the yield of fresh waxy maize by affecting leaf C and N metabolism, and offered theoretical support for implementing measures to alleviate weak-light conditions in the planting areas of fresh waxy maize. • Weak-light stress at post-silking stage decreased maize yield. • Weak-light stress decreased maize yield by affecting leaf C and N metabolism and antioxidant system. • Weak-light stress occurred at 1–7 DAP had a more severe impact on maize than 8–14 and 15–21 DAP. Background: Stroke is the second leading cause of death for all human beings and poses a serious threat to human health. Environmental exposure to a mixture of metals may be associated with the occurrence and development of stroke, but the evidence in the Chinese population is not yet conclusive., Objectives: This study evaluated the association between stroke risk and 13 metals METHODS: Metal concentrations in whole blood samples from 100 stroke cases and 100 controls were measured by ICP-MS. The cumulative impact of mixed metal on stroke risk was investigated by using three statistical models, BKMR, WQS and QGC., Results: The case group had higher concentrations of Mg, Mn, Zn, Se, Sn, and Pb than the control group (p<0.05). BKMR model indicated a correlation between the risk of stroke and exposure to mixed metals. WQS model showed that Mg (27.2 %), Se (25.1 %) and Sn (14.8 %) were positively correlated with stroke risk (OR=1.53; 95 %Cl: 1.03-2.37, p=0.013). The QGC model showed that Mg (49.2 %) was positively correlated with stroke risk, while Ti (31.7 %) was negatively correlated with stroke risk., Conclusions: Mg may be the largest contributor to the cumulative effect of mixed metal exposure on stroke risk, and the interaction between metals requires more attention. Introduction: The health impact of retirement is controversial. Most previous studies have been based on self-reported health indicators or the endpoints of some chronic diseases (e.g., morbidity or mortality), but objective physiological indicators (e.g., blood pressure) have rarely been used. The objective of this study is to elucidate the health effects of retirement on blood pressure, thereby offering empirical evidence to facilitate the health of retirees and to optimize retirement policies., Methods: From 2012 to 2015, 84,696 participants of the Chinese Hypertension Survey (CHS) were included in this study. We applied the fuzzy regression discontinuity design (FRDD) to identify retirement's causal effect on systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and pulse pressure. We also explored the heterogeneity in the effects of retirement across different sex and education level groups., Results: Based on the fully adjusted model, we estimated that retirement increased SBP by 5.047 mm Hg (95% CI: -2.628-12.723, P value: 0.197), DBP by 0.614 mm Hg (95% CI: -3.879-5.108, P value: 0.789) and pulse pressure by 4.433 mm Hg (95% CI: -0.985-9.851, P value: 0.109). We found that retirement led to a significant increase in male participants' SBP and pulse pressure as well as a possible decrease in female participants' blood pressure. Additionally, the blood pressure levels of low-educated participants were more vulnerable to the shock of retirement., Conclusion: Retirement is associated with an increase in blood pressure level. There is a causal relationship between the increase in blood pressure levels of men and retirement. Background: Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) has been extensively studied in various causes of pulmonary hypertension (PH), but its utility as a noninvasive marker remains highly debated. The objective of our study was to assess FeNO levels in patients with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) and mixed connective tissue disease complicating pulmonary hypertension (MCTD-PH), and to correlate them with respiratory functional data, disease severity, and cardiopulmonary function., Methods: We collected data from 54 patients diagnosed with IPAH and 78 patients diagnosed with MCTD-PH at the Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital Affiliated to Tongji University. Our data collection included measurements of brain natriuretic peptide (pro-BNP), cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET), pulmonary function test (PFT), impulse oscillometry (IOS), and FeNO levels. Additionally, we assessed World Health Organization functional class (WHO-FC) of each patient., Results: (1) The fractional exhaled concentration of nitric oxide was notably higher in patients with IPAH compared to those with MCTD-PH. Furthermore, within the IPAH group, FeNO levels were found to be lower in cases of severe IPAH compared to mild IPAH (P = 0.024); (2) In severe pulmonary hypertension as per the WHO-FC classification, FeNO levels in IPAH exhibited negative correlations with FEV1/FVC (Forced Expiratory Velocity at one second /Forced Vital Capacity), MEF50% (Maximum Expiratory Flow at 50%), MEF25%, and MMEF75/25% (Maximum Mid-expiratory Flow between 75% and 25%), while in severe MCTD-PH, FeNO levels were negatively correlated with R20% (Resistance at 20 Hz); (3) ROC (Receiving operator characteristic curve) analysis indicated that the optimal cutoff value of FeNO for diagnosing severe IPAH was 23ppb; (4) While FeNO levels tend to be negatively correlated with peakPETO2(peak end-tidal partial pressure for oxygen) in severe IPAH, in mild IPAH they had a positive correlation to peakO2/Heart rate (HR). An interesting find was observed in cases of severe MCTD-PH, where FeNO levels were negatively correlated with HR and respiratory exchange ratio (RER), while positively correlated with O2/HR throughout the cardiopulmonary exercise test., Conclusion: FeNO levels serve as a non-invasive measure of IPAH severity. Aboveground biomass (AGB) in grasslands directly reflects the net primary productivity, making it a sensitive indicator of grassland resource quality and ecological degradation. Accurately estimating AGB over large regions to reveal long-term AGB evolution trends remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we divided Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (IMAR) grasslands into three study regions based on their spatial distribution of grassland types. We combined remote sensing data with ground-based sample data collected over the past 19 years from 6114 field plots using the Google Earth Engine platform. We constructed random forest (RF) and traditional regression AGB inversion models for each region and selected the best-performing model through accuracy assessment to estimate IMAR grassland AGB for the period 2000-2022. We also examined the trends in AGB changes and identified the driving forces affecting IMAR grasslands through the application of Theil-Sen estimation, Mann-Kendall trend analysis, and the Geodetector model. The main findings are as follows: (1) Compared with the univariate parametric traditional regression model, the AGB monitoring accuracy of the multivariate non-parametric RF model in the three study regions increased by 5.94%, 5.08% and 19.14%, respectively. (2) The average AGB per unit area of IMAR grasslands from 2000 to 2022 was 731.41 kg/hm 2 , with alpine meadow having the highest average AGB (1271.70 kg/hm 2 ) and temperate grassland desertification having the lowest (469.06 kg/hm 2 ). IMAR grasslands exhibited an overall increasing trend in AGB over the past 23 years (6.01 kg/hm 2 •yr), with the increasing trend covering 83.52% of the grassland area and the decreasing trend covering 16.48%. (3) Spatially, IMAR grassland AGB showed a gradual decline from northeast to southwest and exhibited an increasing trend with increasing longitude (45.423 kg/hm 2 per degree) and latitude (71.9 kg/hm 2 per degree). (4) Meteorological factors were the most significant factors affecting IMAR grassland AGB, with precipitation (five-year average q value of 0.61) being the most prominent. In the western part of IMAR, where precipitation is consistently limited throughout the year, the primary drivers of influence were human activities, with particular emphasis on the number of livestock (with a five-year average q value of 0.44). It is evident that reducing human activity disturbance and pressure in fragile grassland areas or implementing near-natural restoration measures will be beneficial for the sustainable development of grassland ecosystems. Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the dose-response associations of physical activity with blood pressure (BP) and hypertension risk among Chinese adults., Methods: Derived from the national community-based China Hypertension Survey database during 2012--2015, a total of 203 108 residents aged at least 18 years were included. Individual-level physical activity was evaluated using a standardized questionnaire, and minutes of metabolic equivalent tasks per week (MET-min/week) were calculated, integrating domain, intensity, frequency, and duration. Multivariable linear and logistic regressions were used to estimate associations of physical activity with BP and hypertension risk, and restricted cubic spline regressions were performed for their nonlinear dose-response relationships., Results: Overall, the median total physical activity (TPA) was 3213.0 MET-min/week and the prevalence of physical inactivity was 14.8%. TPA was negatively associated with BP. Increasing TPA levels was related to a steep decrease in systolic BP, up to approximately 2500 MET-min/week, with more modest benefits above that level of TPA. Higher levels of domain-specific and intensity-specific physical activity were found to be associated with lower BP levels and hypertension risk, except for the association between vigorous-intensity physical activity and systolic BP. We found that TPA within the range of 2000--4000 MET-min/week, a higher frequency and shorter duration were inversely associated with diastolic BP levels., Conclusion: Total, domain-specific, and intensity-specific physical activity were inversely related to BP levels, respectively, in a dose-response fashion. Background: Mutations in MPZL2, the characteristic genetic etiology of autosomal recessive deafness loci 111 (DFNB111), cause non-syndromic and moderate sensorineural hearing loss., Methods: In this study, we analyzed the phenotype and genotype of eight pedigrees consisting of 10 hearing loss patients with bi-allelic pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in MPZL2. These patients were identified from a 3272 Chinese patient cohort who underwent genetic testing., Results: Apart from symmetrical and moderate sensorineural hearing loss, the MPZL2-related phenotype was characterized by progressive hearing loss with variation in the onset age (congenital defect to onset at the young adult stage). We determined that in the Chinese population, the genetic load of MPZL2 defects was 0.24% (8/3272) in patients diagnosed with hearing loss and 7.02% (8/114) in patients diagnosed with hereditary moderate sensorineural hearing loss caused by STRC, OTOA, OTOG, OTOGL, TECTA, MPZL2 and others. Three known MPZL2 variants (c.220C > T (p.Gln74*), c.68delC (p.Pro23Leufs*2), c.463delG (p.Ala155Leufs*10)) and a novel start loss variant (c.3G > T (p.Met1?)) were identified. MPZL2 c.220C > T was identified as the hotspot variant in the Chinese population and even in East Asia compared with c.72delA (p.Ile24Metfs*22) in European and West Asia through allele frequency., Conclusions: We concluded that apart from moderate HL, progressive HL is another character of MPZL2-related HL. No specified variant was verified for the progression of HL, the penetrance and expressivity cannot be determined yet. A novel MPZL2 variant at the start codon was identified, enriching the variant spectrum of MPZL2. The hotspot variants of MPZL2 vary in different ethnicities. Stroke is a significant global cause of disability and death, and its burden has been on the rise, while ambient air pollution has been conclusively linked to stroke incidence. However, knowledge about effects of atmospheric oxidation on stroke and its interactions with fine particles (PM 2.5 ) are still limited. In this study, we investigated the short-term effects of ambient NO 2 , O 3 , and their combined oxidation (O wt ) on first-ever stroke, based on data from the China National Stroke Screening Survey (CNSSS) conducted from 2013 to 2015. We found significant association between ambient NO 2 exposure at lag0 day with first-ever stroke, with a 13.1 % (95 % CI: 3.5 %, 23.6 %) increase in the first-ever stroke risk per 10 μg/m 3 exposure. We also found a significant interaction between NO 2 and PM 2.5 (p < 0.05): first-ever stroke risk increased 23.8 % (95 % CI: 9.6 %, 39.8 %) per 10 μg/m 3 NO 2 exposure in population exposed to higher PM 2.5 concentrations, while no significant association was found in population exposed to lower PM 2.5 concentrations. The results of stratified analyses indicated that physical inactivity enhanced the detrimental effects of O 3 and O wt exposure, while smoking and transient ischemic attack (TIA) history enhanced the detrimental effects of NO 2 exposure. However, TIA history appeared to mitigate the adverse effects of O 3 exposure. Background and Purpose: The aim was to investigate the neurological complications associated with coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) during the 2022 Omicron wave., Methods and Analysis: The medical records of a cohort of people admitted to neurological wards of three participating tertiary centres in Sichuan from 12 December 2022 to 12 January 2023 were reviewed. Demographics and clinical data were obtained and analysed with an interest in COVID-19-related new-onset or worse neurological symptoms. The current data were also compared in two centres with similar data from the same period 12 months earlier., Results: In all, 790 people were enrolled, of whom 436 were positive for COVID-19. Ninety-nine had new onset COVID-related neurological problems, or their known neurological condition deteriorated during the wave. There was a significant difference in demographics from the findings amongst admissions 12 months earlier as there was an increase in the average age, the incidence of encephalitis and encephalopathy, and mortality rates. One hundred and one received COVID-specific antivirals, intravenous glucocorticoids and intravenous immunoglobulin therapy. No differences were seen between these and those who did not use them., Conclusion: New-onset neurological conditions, particularly encephalitis and encephalopathy, increased significantly during this period. Deterioration of existing neurological conditions, such as seizure exacerbation, was also observed. A large-scale treatment trial of people with COVID-19 infection presenting with neurological disorders is still needed., (© 2023 The Authors.
