Dialium guineense essential oil possesses various biological and biochemical activities. The present study is based on determination of antimicrobial, anti-diabetic, anti-cholinesterase, anti-biofim, anti-antibiotic resistance modifying activities and anti-quorum sensing potential of essential oil. Chemical compounds in essential oil were recognised by retention indices using gas chromatograph-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). A total of 45 compounds were present in the essential oil of which 12 are most active. Essential oil of D. guineense showed highest anti-bacterial activity in the form of zone of inhibition, produced 23 mm zone against Staphylococcus aureus and 15 mm against Escherichia coli. D. guineense oil at various concentrations showed excellent anti-diabetic and anti-cholinesterase activities. Since many active compounds were present in D. guineense oil so authors of this study planned to observe effect of D. guineense oil on quorum sensing regulated virulence factors and thus bio-film formation in pathogens Essential oil reduced bio-film formation considerably at all concentrations against E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Determination of quorum sensing (QS) inhibitory activity was demonstrated by reduction in pyocyanin (73.93%), total protease (68.59%) and chitinase activity (66.18%) in Pseudomonas aeruginosa at 1 mg/mL of D. guineense oil compared to control. Essential oil at all concentrations tested showed synergistic effect. Since essential oil showed anti-microbial, anti-biofilm and quorum sensing regulated anti-pathogenic activities. Based on results mentioned above, it is concluded that bioactive chemicals from D. guineense oil can act as an anti-infective agent by controlling growth, bio-film formation and signalling pathways of pathogenic microbes as well as other diseases. Objective: This study was carried out to document the medicinal values and therapeutic applications of different parts of A. cordifolia in Ekebedi Oboro ancient Kingdom of Abia State, Nigeria, and profile its bioactive constituents. Material-Method: The ethno-botanical survey involved questionnaires and oral interviews of 81 randomly selected traditional medicine doctors and natives on medicinal values of A. cordifolia. GC-MS fingerprinting was adopted to elucidate the bioactive constituents of the methanol leaf extract of the plant. Results: The survey showed that A. cordifolia is prescribed in different treatment regimens for coughs, bronchitis, postpartum bleeding, lacerations, wounds, vaginitis, diarrhea, sickle cell anemia, and venereal diseases, including gonorrhea, syphilis, and prostatitis. Phytochemical fingerprinting revealed the presence of several bioactive compounds as the major active ingredients of the plant. A total of 27 fatty acids and volatile hydrocarbons were detected in the leaf extract of the plant with 9, 12-Octadecadienoic acid (Z, Z)- methyl ester (18.42%), 9-Octadecenoic acid methyl ester (19.93%), Dodecanoic acid 1,2,3-propanetrieyl (15.87%) as most abundant ingredients. Conclusion: A. cordifolia is used to treat various diseases such as sickle cell anemia, diabetes, post-partum bleeding, and HIV infections amongst others. The fatty acids identified in A. cordifolia possibly underscored these antimicrobial and therapeutic actions of the plant in traditional medicine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Phyllanthus muellerianus (Kunze) Exell, a member of the Phyllanthaceae family, is a medicinal plant widely distributed in Africa. Decoctions from the leaves are used in Nigeria to treat fevers, convulsions, some neurological disorders and malaria., Aim of the Study: This study is to evaluate the anti-malarial properties of methanol extract of Phyllanthus muellerianus (MEPM) leaves and its ethyl acetate fraction using a murine malaria model infected with Plasmodium berghei. Additionally, we seek to investigate the potential modulatory effects of this extract and fraction on CD4 + T-cell populations in the context of malaria infection., Materials and Methods: The anti-malarial effects of the leaf methanol extract of Phyllanthus muellerianus (MEPM) were screened using three established in vivo models of anti-plasmodial screening namely the curative, suppressive and prophylactic models. The methanol extract (MEPM) was afterwards fractionated into hexane (HFPM), ethyl acetate (EAFPM), and methanol (MFPM) fractions. In the pilot anti-malarial screening of the fractions, EAFPM exhibited the best antiparasitic activity. Subsequently, EAFPM was screened for anti-malarial activity using the three models above. The effects of the MEPM and EAFPM on haematological indices (Hb and PCV) of the inoculated animals were further screened and the mean survival time (MST) of the animals was monitored. CD4 + T cells of various groups were counted before and after treatment using a flow cytometer. The EAFPM was further subjected to HPLC analysis for identification of its major compounds., Results: The EAFPM (100 and 200 mg/kg) elicited 88% and 93% cure respectively in the curative model, while artesunate (5 mg/kg,- the positive control) gave 87% protection. The MEPM and EAFPM also gave significant suppression of parasitemia in the suppressive model. The treated groups survived beyond 28 days as against 11 days by the control group (infected but not treated). The treated groups also prevented anaemia seen in the negative control. The EAFPM group significantly modulated the CD4 + T cell.
