Soil acidification is an issue for agriculture that requires effective management, typically in the form of lime (calcium carbonate, CaCO3), application. Mid infrared (MIR) spectroscopy methods offer an alternative to conventional laboratory methods, that may enable cost-effective and improved measurement of soil acidity and responses to liming, including detection of small–scale heterogeneity through the profile. Properties of an acidic soil following lime application were measured using both MIR spectroscopy with Partial Least Squares Regression (MIR-PLSR) and laboratory measurements to (a) compare the ability of each method to detect lime treatment effects on acidic soil, and (b) assess effects of the different treatments on selected soil properties. Soil properties including soil pH (in H2O and CaCl2), Aluminium (Al, exchangeable and extractable), cation exchange capacity (CEC) and organic carbon (OC) were measured at a single field trial receiving lime treatments differing in rate, source and incorporation. Model performance of MIR-PLSR prediction of the soil properties ranged from R2 = 0.582, RMSE = 2.023, RPIQ = 2.921 for Al (extractable) to R2 = 0.881, RMSE = 0.192, RPIQ = 5.729 for OC. MIR-PLSR predictions for pH (in H2O and CaCl2) were R2 = 0.739, RMSE = 0.287, RPIQ = 2.230 and R2 = 0.788, RMSE = 0.311, RPIQ = 1.897 respectively, and could detect a similar treatment effect compared to laboratory measurements. Treatment effects were not detected for MIR-PLSR-predicted values of CEC and both exchangeable and extractable Al. Findings support MIR-PLSR as a method of measuring soil pH to monitor effects of liming treatments on acidic soil to help inform precision agricultural management strategies, but suggests that some nuance and important information about treatment effects of lime on CEC and Al may be lost. This study aimed to assess the nutritional status of soybean and wheat and the relationship with grain yield and biometric components after lime and phosphogypsum (GY) reapplication. Treatments consisted of two lime application methods, surface liming and incorporated liming, to different levels of base saturation (BS) (44, 70, and 90%), in addition to surface liming to 70% BS associated with a standard dose (70GY1) or double dose (70GY2) of GY. Treatments were applied in 2012 and reapplied in 2016. The results refer to the 2018/2019 soybean season and the 2019 wheat season. Lime + GY treatment increased leaf area, plant height, leaf dry matter, and stem dry matter in soybean but had no effect on specific leaf area (235.4 cm2 g−1), stem diameter (6.08 mm), number of pods per plant (71.7), grain number per plant (165), or thousand grain weight (117 g). Liming to 90% BS reduced leaf manganese contents in both crops and leaf iron content in soybean. GY application improved the calcium status of both crops and the sulfur status of soybean. However, 70GY2 reduced leaf magnesium contents in soybean and wheat. Soil tillage without lime reduced wheat yield by 12% compared with no-till. Soybean yield correlated positively with leaf nitrogen (0.79), leaf phosphorus (0.91), leaf area (0.62), and thousand grain weight (0.65), whereas wheat yield correlated with leaf phosphorus (0.83), calcium (0.75), and sulfur (0.74). Growing concern over the combustion cost and environment has made road engineers and scientists to explore the possible use of locally available materials for the construction of roads. The present study evaluated the strength and durability characteristics of five sites having locally available silty soils using lime and cement–sand stabilization technique. The test results showed that the cement–sand stabilization technique using 6% cement and 5% local sand resulted in higher strength and durability as compared to lime stabilization. There is also a significant increase in the value of the soaked California bearing ratio (CBR). As unconfined compressive strength (UCS) attained the threshold strength as prescribed by IRC SP 72 2015 for the granular sub-base (GSB) layer, by the use of sand cement stabilization, this technique of stabilization for local silty soils could be used for GSB for low volume road (LVR) construction. As observed from microstructural results which were performed by analysing SEM images, sand cement stabilisation leads to CSH gel and agglomerate formation thereby increasing strength and durability properties. The cost analysis for the replaced stabilized GSB layer showed that using sand–cement stabilization, the estimated cost can be reduced by 56% of the total cost as compared to the conventional method. The acidic soils of western Newfoundland require liming for successful production of most crops. Locally sourced paper mill waste wood ash (WA) and paper sludge (SL) have potential as cheaper alternatives to limestone (LIME). Two greenhouse experiments evaluated WA and SL as liming and soil conditioning amendments for annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) production. At 55 days after seeding, soil pH in WA (6.2 and 6.3) and wood ash and paper sludge (WASL) (6.0 and 6.3) were not different from that in LIME (6.0 and 6.5) for Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. However, pH in SL was 0.4 and 0.3 points lower than in LIME. Compared to LIME, WA, SL, and WASL produced 31%–52% and 57%–74% greater biomass yield in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. N uptake was greater in WA (60 and 129 kg N ha−1) and WASL (51 and 97 kg N ha−1) compared to LIME (40 and 85 kg N ha−1), in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. SL did not differ from LIME in Experiment 1, but reduced N uptake by 57% in Experiment 2. The results show significant potential of WA as an alternative amendment for liming and yield improvement of annual ryegrass grown in NL podzolic soils. However, SL has limited potential due to the risk of increasing N immobilization and residual soil mineral N when growing conditions are limiting. Combining SL with WA or biochar seemed to alleviate these risks. Overall, the adoption of these amendments for field production systems warrants serious consideration, following supplemental field studies to determine optimal application rates and timing. Construction of earth fill dams offers a cost-effective solution for various purposes. However, their susceptibility to internal soil erosion, known as piping, poses a significant risk of structural failure and resultant loss of life and property. Soil stabilization emerges as a practical technique to fortify these dams against such threats. This study investigated the impact of lime on the internal erosion properties of clay soils, focusing on CH and ML soil types. Specimens of different lime content were prepared and remolded at 95% relative compaction and optimum moisture content. Hole Erosion tests at varying lime concentrations and curing durations were adapted to conduct the investigation. This investigation aims to optimize lime content and curing time for cohesive soil stabilization against internal erosion. Findings revealed that 2% and 5% of quicklime, by dry weight of the soil, effectively stabilized CH and ML soils, respectively, against internal erosion, with a two-day curing period proving optimal. Background: Soil acidity, low soil nutrient status and low nitrogen fixing inoculants as a result of poor soil fertility management practices are the major constraints in soybean production in Assosa Zone, particularly in Assosa and Bambassi districts. Hence, this experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of bio-, organic and inorganic NPSB fertilizers and lime on soil physico-chemical properties. Methods: During the period 2019-2020 factorial combinations of two bio-fertilizer inoculants [without bio-fertilizer (B1) and SB12 plus MAR1495 bio-fertilizer at their recommended rates of 500 g ha-1 (B2); two organic fertilizers without fresh cattle manure (M1) and fresh cattle manure at 10 t ha-1 (M2); two lime rates without lime (L1) and lime at 5 t ha-1 (L2); two inorganic NPSB fertilizers NPSB at 9.5-23-3.5-0.05 (F1) and NPSB at 19-46-7-0.1 (F2) at their recommended rates for soybean] were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Bulk density, pH, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, organic carbon and cation exchange capacity were collected and analyzed using SAS software version 9.1.3 and significant mean differences were separated using Duncan's multiple range test (DMRT). Result: Bulk density, pH, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, organic carbon and cation exchange capacity were highly affected (P<0.01) by the interactions of bio-, organic and inorganic fertilizers and lime. Finally, the interaction of SB12+MAR1495, 10 t/ha fresh cattie manure, 5 t/ha lime and NPSB at 19-46-7-0.1 improved the bulk density, pH, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, organic carbon and cation exchange capacity at both districts. Tillage conservation practices (CA), traditional agriculture (TA), and liming influence soil properties and crop yield. However, it is essential to demonstrate which tillage and liming practices improve soil properties and forage corn yield. This study compared soil properties and forage corn production in two tillage systems with the addition of dolomite and lime, which formed four treatments. The tillage in the first three days surpassed the TA soil CO2 emission, with 64.8% more CO2 than in the CA soil, and the TA hydraulic conductivity and bulk density were more suitable than those in the CA soil. The CA soil had 233 earthworms m−2 more than in TA. The TA green forage corn yielded 6.45 t ha−1 more than in CA, with a higher P, Ca, and Mg foliar content than in CA, but in the CA, the foliar N and K were higher than in TA. The liming increased soil cations (except K), highlighting the lime on dolomite with—52% Al and + 4.85 t ha−1 of forage corn compared to the control. Soil CO2 emission was far lower in CA than in TA, with a slightly lower forage yield, and other soil properties were improved, meaning lower land preparation costs and time savings than in TA. Expansive soil, also called swelling soil can cause severe damage to buildings and foundations due to the high swell-shrink behavior corresponding to moisture content changes. Slag, which is defined as the by-product of the iron and steel-making process, has been widely used as a stabilizer agent for developing clay soil mechanical characteristics. This review paper highlighted the findings of previous studies on treating expansive soils utilizing several types of slag. In this study, the effects of chemical (20:20:0 compound) and organic (barnyard) fertilizers applied to different textured soils on several soil enzyme (urease, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, and dehydrogenase) activities were investigated. The research was conducted under greenhouse conditions with (beans and corn) and without crops. Considering the results of the preexperiment analysis of the soils, a 40-g pot–1 of farmyard manure was placed into the pots in which organic fertilizer would be applied in clay and silty loam soils, and a 50-g pot–1 of farmyard manure was added to sandy loam soil; in addition, a 0.25-g pot–1 of 20:20:0 compound fertilizer was mixed into the clay, silty, and sandy loam samples where chemical fertilizer would be applied. Soil chemical properties such as soil reaction (pH), electrical conductivity, lime, organic matter, useful phosphorus, total nitrogen, exchangeable cations (Ca, Mg, Na, K), cation exchange capacity, microelements (Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn), and soil enzymes (urease, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, and dehydrogenase) were determined. According to the results, fertilizers applied to the soil increased the soil’s pH, organic matter, and macro and micronutrient contents and decreased the exchangeable Na content. The lime content of the soils did not show any decrease or increase. Lime application combined with complementary sustainable management practices increases crop yields, but liming is only modestly applied in Serbia. This study investigated the influence of liming (1000 kg/ha) combined with the common application of mineral fertilizers on maize yield and the chemical properties of pseudogley soil. The experiment was conducted near Kraljevo, Western Serbia, on the maize hybrid ZP 606 sown in a two-year monoculture. The experiment had three treatments: fertilizer, fertilizer + lime, and a control treatment. The soil is acid, poor in humus, and contains an increased content of mobile aluminum. There was a significant increase in yield under the fertilizer and lime + fertilizer treatments, compared to the control. The yield of maize in the limed treatment was 4.4–9% higher than in the fertilizer treatment. The positive effects of liming on soil are related to an increase in pH, base saturation, and available phosphorus, and a decrease in available aluminum. In the fertilizer treatment, there was a small decrease in pH and base saturation, whereas the amount of aluminum remained high, indicating that the further application of fertilizers without lime can increase aluminum content and foster its toxicity. The long-term sustainability of maize production in Serbia should include liming as a regular management practice on pseudogley soil, with the utilization of smaller doses of lime because of the potential CO2 effects. To improve soil health, food, and environmental security, and to incorporate new crops, developing a framework promoting liming as a sustainable management practice is of high importance. • The potential of microorganisms in olive trees in southern Brazil is still a gap. • Beneficial microorganisms can improve seedling growth and resistance to stress. • Each species of microorganism had its beneficial potential affected by pH. • The inoculant species can be adjusted according to the soil condition. The benefits of plant growth-promoting microorganisms to increase productivity have been demonstrated in various crops. Little is known about their potential in olive orchards in southern Brazil, whose naturally acidic soils are intensively limed for olive production. The present study investigated the effect of four inoculations (no inoculation, inoculation of the bacterium Azospirillum brasilense , inoculation of the fungus Trichoderma harzianum and inoculation of the fungus Trichoderma virens) at different levels of soil liming on the development of olive seedlings. The results showed that the microorganisms T. virens, T harzianum, and A. brasilense, but especially T. virens , when applied to the soil, promoted increased growth in height, diameter, and total dry mass yield of young olive trees, especially in conditions of lower soil acidity, with increases of 92, 34 and 33 % respectively, compared to the soil without inoculation. Less acidic environments, more favorable for olive tree development, enhanced the positive effect of these microorganisms. The microorganisms also mitigated the effects in potentially more stressful conditions, as observed by the higher concentration of photosynthesizing pigments, the reduction in hydrogen peroxide content, and the reduction in antioxidant enzyme activities in leaves and roots, in soil pH below that recommended for olive cultivation. Continuous monitoring of soil quality is vital to understand the effects and to identify best management practices for sustainable agroecosystems. This study focuses on evaluating the soil quality and crop yield sustainability in a long-term maize-wheat cropping system experiment spanning 47 years. Physical, chemical, and biological soil quality indicators were assessed at two soil depths (0–0.15 m and 0.15–0.30 m) under eleven fertilizer and amendment regimes i.e., 50 % NPK, 100 % NPK, 150 % NPK, 100 % NPK + Zn, 100 % NPK+ hand weeding, 100 % NP, 100 % N, 100 % NPK + farmyard manure (FYM), 100 % NPK(S), 100 % NPK + lime and control, laid out in a completely randomized block design. Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to select a minimum data set (MDS) of indicators for soil quality assessment, followed by weighted additive approach to calculate the soil quality index (SQI). Results showed that balanced dose of NPK fertilizers, in combination with FYM or lime, enhanced average wheat grain yield by 39.9 and 29.4 % over sole 100 % NPK fertilizers, respectively. Treatment 100 % NPK + FYM recorded a significant improvement in aggregate stability, available nutrients, microbial biomass over control and 100 % NPK. The highest value of SQI (0–0.15 m) was recorded in 100 % NPK + FYM (0.99), followed by 100 % NPK + lime (0.86) and lowest in 100 % N (0.41). Omission of NPK, PK, K and S from fertilizer regime caused a decline of respective 33, 39, 22 and 6 % in the SQI, whereas, all the treatments recorded a decline in SQI in sub-surface layer. The average contribution of MDS towards the SQI of 0–0.15 and 0.15–0.30 m depth was labile carbon (LC) (30 %) > microbial biomass N (MBN) (28 %) > mean weight diameter (MWD) (17 %) > pH (16 %) > available K (6 %) and LC (33 %) > N mineralization (24 %) > MWD (22 %) > pH (21 %), respectively. The SQI positively correlated with average grain yield and SYI, highlighting the importance of soil quality for sustainable crop production. Soil acidity is the most limiting factor for agricultural yield and sustainability in acid soils. Liming is the management practice recommended for reducing soil acidity and increasing the availability of macronutrients, but it can also lead to reduction in the availability of cationic micronutrients when applied at high rates. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of application of high rates of limestone, incorporated in the 0–0.40 m soil layer, on nutrient availability and their relation to cumulative grain yield in an annual crop production system. Three experiments were set up in 2017 with six liming rates (0, 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 Mg ha−1), with incorporation in the 0–0.40 m layer. Soil and leaf samples were collected for determination of macro- and micronutrient concentration in the leaves. Regression and linear correlation analyses were used to evaluate the effect of the application rates on the availability of nutrients and on cumulative yield in soybean, maize, dry bean (common bean) wheat crops over three crop years. The micronutrient that showed the greatest reduction in level in the soil through liming was Fe, in contrast with Zn, which was not affected. The concentrations of micronutrients in soybean and common bean leaves were more sensitive to the effect of deep liming than the levels in the soil, and reductions were observed in the concentrations of B, Fe, Mn, and Zn; however, they remained at suitable levels according to regional standards. Thus, even with the reductions in the availability of the micronutrients brought about by incorporation of higher doses of limestone (≥ 9 Mg ha−1), the cumulative grain yields showed an increase in accordance with liming rates, with the optimal dosage from 8.77 to 12.6 Mg ha−1, depending on the site. Plant functional traits can serve as indicators of plant resource-use strategies in response to environmental changes. Plants growing in acidified soil exhibit conservative traits and limit growth, but there is still little known about changes in above- and belowground functional traits and their coordination under alleviation of soil acidification. Here, we conducted a pot experiment on raising soil pH by liming in Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) saplings in southern China. The experiment involved in two degrees of acidified soil (Mild, pH = 4.3; Severe, pH = 3.6) and three liming treatments: Control (CK, 0), low liming treatment (L, 1000 kg CaO hm−2) and high liming treatment (H, 4000 kg CaO hm−2). We measured 22 above- and belowground functional traits of Chinese fir including allocation, morphological, photosynthetic, and chemical traits to assess their response to liming. The results show that liming enhanced aboveground mass fraction and total leaf area (TLA), and reduced construction cost (lower C concentration). However, specific leaf area (SLA), nutrient concentrations of N and P, and photosynthetic rate (Pn) remained unchanged. These results suggest that aboveground components exhibited acquisitive strategies in response to liming with greater TLA and lower construction cost. Moreover, liming reduced root mass fraction (RMF), increased specific root length (SRL), specific root area (SRA), and root N and Ca nutrient concentrations. These results suggest that belowground components also exhibited acquisitive strategies through constructing longer and thinner roots with greater metabolic rates. Our findings show that liming shifts above- and belowground resource-use strategies of Chinese fir from conservative to acquisitive. These changes in functional traits support the ability of Chinese fir to grow rapidly in response to alleviation of soil acidification. For more insight into the interaction of natural organic matter (NOM) with metal (hydr)oxides and oxyanions, the adsorption of added fulvic acid (FA) and the corresponding release of phosphate (PO 4) were studied for a series of agricultural soils (∼0 – 25 cm), strongly varying in soil properties. Interpretation of the data with surface complexation modeling using the NOM-CD model applied in a dual-phase mode shows that the adsorption of added FA, in contrast to PO 4 , is restricted to the external surfaces of nano-aggregates. The adsorption is relatively weak and pH-independent, due to its competition with the native NOM of the organo-mineral phase. At low pH, the functional groups of both added FA and native NOM shift in the interface towards the soil oxide surfaces, making both a good competitor for adsorbed phosphate, resulting in a higher amount of phosphate being released. With an increase in pH, the competition becomes weaker. As a result, more phosphate is bound and less is released when FA is added. Our surface complexation modeling points to the existence of organo-mineral nano-aggregates with sizes of >∼10 – 270 nm, which depends on the total reactive surface area of the soil. Our findings imply that organic amendments containing FA equilibrate with only a portion of the total reactive surface area. In acidic soils, the addition of such organic amendments will be more effective in solubilizing phosphate, which is beneficial from a plant nutrition perspective, but simultaneously it may also contribute more to environmental eutrophication. The ongoing acidification of soil poses a significant threat to the proper functioning of various ecosystems worldwide. Silicate rock dusts (RD) are increasingly amended to acid soils to restore their pH, but the acid neutralising capacity (ANC) and dissolution rate of these products are highly variable and lack proper assessment protocols. It is expected that pH-dependent RD ANCs and dissolution rates dictate the pH increase in soils depending on the initial pH and pH buffer power of the soil. This study addressed these questions by comparing and validating three accelerated weathering tests for their capacity to predict the gradual liming effects in a two-year outdoor mesocosm. Five commercial RDs (two basalts, phonolite, foidite, and trachy-andesite) were tested in four acidified forest soils varying in initial pH, in texture and associated pH buffer power. First, RD dissolution was measured in aqueous batch renewal systems during one year at various starting pH (3.5, 4.5, and 5.5) and constant temperatures (20 °C, 37 °C, and 65 °C). These showed that the ANCs of RDs exhibit a fast fraction (half-life < 1 day) followed by a slower fraction. Second, titration tests of RDs at fixed solution pH, i.e., pH stat , performed between pH 3.5 and 4.5 revealed surface normalised dissolution rates that decreased factors 10–100 per unit pH increase, the slope depending on the RD's mineralogy. Indeed, the rate ranking of observed surface area normalised dissolution rates confirmed that of literature-based values, weighed by the XRD-derived mineralogical fractions. Third, lime-calibrated agitated soil-RD suspension tests were conducted for two months, illustrating the dependency of RD ANC on soil context, and yielding ANCs that were factor 2–5 times larger than in the batch renewal test because of pH buffering effects of soil particulates. Finally, an outdoor soil mesocosm on the four acid soils amended with RDs at 12 Mg/ha and 340 Mg/ha was established and soil pH was monitored for 2 years. The observed pH trends corresponded well for both the low dose (R2 a = 0.67) and the high dose (R2 a = 0.93) with model predictions made using the pH- and temperature-dependent RD dissolution rates (pH stat test) and the soil pH buffer power and RD slow ANC-fraction (soil-RD suspension test). This model predicts half-lives of RD dissolution ranging between <1 month to >100 years depending on the starting pH of the soil, its pH buffer power, the RD mineralogy (XRD based) and its specific surface area. Liming materials are widely applied to alleviate soil acidification and increase rice yield in acidic soils, but their effects on nitrogen (N) use efficiency are still unclear. Here, we conducted a field-, pot-, and micro-plot experiment to investigate how the application of slaked lime (i.e., Ca(OH) 2) affects the fate of chemical fertilizer-N and straw-N in a double rice cropping system. In the field experiment, liming increased grain yield and N uptake by an average of 9.0% and 10.6%, respectively. In contrast, CaCl 2 application did not affect rice yield and N uptake, suggesting that the effects of lime application were not related to the addition of Ca2+. Results from a 15N tracer experiment (i.e., 15N-labeled urea and straw) indicated that liming reduced N uptake from fertilizer (−5.7%), but increased N uptake from straw (+31.3%). Liming also reduced soil retention of both urea- and straw-N and increased their loss rates. Taken together, our results indicate that although liming increases rice yield and N uptake, it lowers the use efficiency of fertilizer N and facilitates N losses. The solubility of cadmium (Cd) in soil and its transfer to plants are influenced by soil pH. While increasing soil pH reduces Cd solubility and accumulation in rice plants grown in acidic soils, its effect on Cd accumulation in vegetables remains inconclusive. Here, we investigated the impact of soil pH on Cd accumulation in dicotyledonous vegetables and elucidated the underlying molecular mechanisms. Soils collected from various locations were supplemented with varying quantities of lime to achieve soil pH values of around 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0. Raising soil pH from around 5.0 to 8.0 markedly decreased extractable Cd. However, increasing soil pH tended to promote shoot Cd accumulation in dicotyledonous vegetable species including lettuce, pakchoi, and Chinese cabbage, and the model dicotyledonous plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Conversely, soil pH increase resulted in a monotonic decrease in rice Cd accumulation. In our hydroponic experiments, we discovered that iron (Fe) deficiency substantially increased Cd uptake and accumulation in dicotyledonous plants but not in rice. Increasing soil pH reduced soil Fe availability and induced the Fe transporter gene IRT1 expression in dicotyledonous vegetables roots, which led to an increase in IRT1-mediated Cd uptake and subsequently increased Cd accumulation as soil pH increases. A comprehensive model incorporating extractable Cd and root IRT1 expression better explained Cd accumulation in vegetable shoots. The application of 50 mg/kg of Fe fertilizer in neutral or alkaline soils resulted in a significant reduction in Cd accumulation by 34–58% in dicotyledonous vegetables. These findings reveal that increasing soil pH has two opposite effects, decreasing soil Cd availability while promoting Cd uptake through IRT1 upregulation, reconciling the inconsistency in its effect on Cd accumulation in dicotyledonous plants. Our findings provide important insights for understanding the factors affecting Cd uptake in plants and offer a practical solution to mitigate Cd contamination in vegetables.
