Abstract

Background and Aims: Hypoalbuminemia, as defined by serum albumin (SA) levels ≤35 g/L, is associated to venous and arterial thrombosis in general population and in patients at risk of cardiovascular disease. It is unknown if SA ≤35 g/L is also associated to portal vein thrombosis (PVT) in cirrhosis. Methods: Cirrhotic patients enrolled in the Portal vein thrombosis Relevance On Liver cirrhosis: Italian Venous thrombotic Events Registry (PRO-LIVER) study (n = 753), were followed-up for 2 years to assess the risk of PVT, that was diagnosed by Doppler ultrasonography. Child-Pugh classes, Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score, presence of hepatocellular carcinoma and laboratory variables including SA, D-dimer, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were measured at baseline. Results: SA ≤35 g/L was detected in 52% of patients. A logistic multivariate regression analysis showed that higher Child-Pugh class, hepatocellular carcinoma and thrombocytopenia were significantly associated to SA ≤35 g/L. In a subgroup of patients where data regarding hs-CRP and D-dimer were available, SA ≤35 g/L was inversely associated with hs-CRP and D-dimer. During the follow-up, a total of 61 patients experienced PVT. A Kaplan Meier survival analysis showed SA ≤35 g/L was associated to increased risk of PVT compared to SA >35 g/L (P = .005). A multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis showed that male sex, lower platelet count, and SA ≤35 g/L remained associated to PVT after adjusting for confounding factors. Conclusion: Cirrhotic patients with SA ≤35 g/L are at higher risk of experiencing PVT compared to those with SA >35 g/L and could be considered as potential candidates to anticoagulant prophylaxis for PVT prevention.

2. Low-Frequency Stabilizations of the PMCHWT Equation for Dielectric and Conductive Media: On a Full-Wave Alternative to Eddy-Current Solvers

Abstract

We propose here a novel stabilization strategy for the PMCHWT equation that cures its frequency and conductivity related instabilities and is obtained by leveraging quasi-Helmholtz projectors. The resulting formulation is well-conditioned in the entire low-frequency regime, including the eddy current one, and can be applied to arbitrarily penetrable materials, ranging from dielectric to conductive ones. In addition, by choosing the rescaling coefficients of the quasi-Helmholtz components appropriately, we prevent the typical loss of accuracy occurring at low frequency in the presence of inductive and capacitive type magnetic frill excitations, commonly used in circuit modeling to impose a potential difference. Finally, leveraging on quasi-Helmholtz projectors instead than on the standard Loop-Star decomposition, our formulation is also compatible with most fast solvers and is amenable to multiply connected geometries, without any computational overhead for the search for the global loops of the structure. The efficacy of the proposed preconditioning scheme when applied to both simply and multiply connected geometries is corroborated by numerical examples.

3. On a High-Frequency Analysis of Some Relevant Integral Equations in Electromagnetics

Abstract

In this contribution we analyze the spectral properties of some commonly used boundary integral operators in computational electromagnetics and of their discrete counterparts, highlighting peculiar features of their spectra. In particular, a comparison with the eigenvalues of the continuous operators will be presented that highlights deviations in the high frequency regime and impacts, in a peculiar way, the accuracy of the numerical solutions of each formulation. A study and a proactive analysis of numerical results from standard boundary element solvers and the predictions from the theoretical analysis will corroborate the analytical framework employed and the validity of our observations.

4. On the Computation of Square Roots and Inverse Square Roots of Gram Matrices for Surface Integral Equations in Electromagnetics

Abstract

Surface integral equations (SIEs)-based boundary element methods are widely used for analyzing electromagnetic scattering scenarii. However, after discretization of SIEs, the spectrum and eigenvectors of the boundary element matrices are not usually representative of the spectrum and eigenfunctions of the underlying surface integral operators, which can be problematic for methods that rely heavily on spectral properties. To address this issue, we delineate some efficient algorithms that allow for the computation of matrix square roots and inverse square roots of the Gram matrices corresponding to the discretization scheme, which can be used for revealing the spectrum of standard electromagnetic integral operators. The algorithms, which are based on properly chosen expansions of the square root and inverse square root functions, are quite effective when applied to several of the most relevant Gram matrices used for boundary element discretizations in electromagnetics. Tables containing different sets of expansion coefficients are provided along with comparative numerical experiments that evidence advantages and disadvantages of the different approaches. In addition, to demonstrate the spectrum-revealing properties of the proposed techniques, they are applied to the discretization of the problem of scattering by a sphere for which the analytic spectrum is known., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

17. Constrained Pseudoinverses for the Electromagnetic Inverse Source Problem

Abstract

Inverse source strategies have proven to be quite relevant for several applications in advanced electromagnetics. These schemes are based on the solution of ill-posed problems in which current or near-field distributions are reconstructed from far-field (or from less informative field) information. Standard strategies, that can include physical constraints such as Love conditions, often rely on standard pseudoinverse definitions and yield solutions that are, at times, far from the physical ones. This work proposes a different approach focusing on defining and analyzing a new family of pseudoinverses that takes advantage of small-in-dimension subspaces containing a priori information. The new solutions returned by the new pseudoinverses will be a suitable average between a solution living entirely in the vector space containing the a priori information and a solution obtained via norm-minimizing approaches. The contribution presents both theoretical analyses and numerical experiments showing the practical effectiveness of the novel mathematical tool.

I am sure you knew, dear reader, that IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine, faithfully serving for decades our beloved IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S), could not miss celebrating this year’s 75th anniversary of the founding of the AP-S. No one can deny that the last 75 have been very fruitful years for our discipline and that the AP-S has been impacting the lives of scientists and engineers and their students and families in many wonderful ways. At the magazine, we thought that there would be no better way to celebrate this very special occasion than by dedicating a special series to it! You are now holding in your hands the first issue of this special series. More will come; be sure to collect them all! The issue starts with news that the AP-S just won the IEEE Young Professionals Hall of Fame Award. In the announcement, Reddy reports on this well-deserved achievement and on the outstanding work of the AP-S Young Professionals Committee.

Abstract

This is a continuation of Part I of the Special Issue of IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation (TAP) on Frontiers in Computational Electromagnetics (CEM) at the intersection of methods, computing, and applications [1]. Its principal goal is to showcase the most recent developments, ideas, and results constituting the state-of-the-art CEM techniques to simulate problems of antennas and propagation and discuss the best and most visionary approaches as we move forward. To address the challenges of ever-increasing problem sizes and complexities, as well as the diversity of AP applications and modeling requirements, a range of electromagnetic simulation strategies and numerical discretization techniques are essential, with no single approach being universally optimal. CEM is both an art and a science, focusing on the development of these approaches.

21. Receiving Antennas in the Spotlight! [Editor’s Comments]

Abstract

We are often grateful to electromagnetic reciprocity for allowing us to stick to only one half of the antenna story by deriving methods and assessments for radiating antennas and then obtaining all corresponding characterizations for the device used in receiving mode. If you feel this is somehow unfair and discriminatory with regard to receiving antennas, we are about to do some justice in this issue of the magazine! The nice contribution from Diao, Liu, and Warnick [A1] is, in fact, entirely devoted to receiving antennas analysis. The authors focus on dipole antennas and show how the Poynting streamline method can be successfully used for analyzing antennas in receiving mode. After a rich introduction, the main features of Poynting streamline techniques are delineated, and the authors show how this method can be used to characterize several antenna parameters and figures of merit. The article then closes with insightful conclusions summarizing the contribution.

22. Pioneering the Method of Moments [Editor’s Comments]

Abstract

Any member of our Society is very well aware of the key role that electromagnetic modeling plays in advanced electromagnetic engineering, and the method of moments (MoM), often known also as the boundary element method (BEM), is among the most popular and widespread techniques. This computational strategy was pioneered in electromagnetics by Prof. Roger F. Harrington, a scientist to which generations of researchers and practitioners are deeply indebted. In this issue of IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine, a two-part contribution by Prof. Juan Mosig [A1], [A2] pays homage to this outstanding scientific pioneer, and it does it in one of the best possible ways: offering a comprehensive review of the MOM/BEM for the static (part 1) and the dynamic (part 2) cases. This valuable contribution can be a quite convenient and comprehensive starting point for anyone interested in learning more and doing research on the topic. Abstract

In this work, we introduce new integral formulations based on the convolution quadrature method for the time-domain modeling of perfectly electrically conducting scatterers that overcome some of the most critical issues of the standard schemes based on the electric field integral equation (EFIE). The standard time-domain EFIE-based approaches typically yield matrices that become increasingly ill-conditioned as the time-step or the mesh discretization density increase and suffer from the well-known DC instability. This work presents solutions to these issues that are based both on new Calderón strategies and quasi-Helmholtz projectors regularizations. In addition, to ensure an efficient computation of the marching-on-in-time, the proposed schemes leverage properties of the Z-transform—involved in the convolution quadrature discretization scheme—when computing the stabilized operators. The two resulting formulations compare favorably with standard, well-established schemes. The properties and practical relevance of these new formulations will be showcased through relevant numerical examples that include canonical geometries and more complex structures.
