Abstract

Direct regeneration is an effective strategy of spent lithium iron phosphate (S-LFP), with the principal aspect being the selection of the lithium source and reductant. Here, assisted with a thermodynamically favourable reaction involving a bifunctional organic lithium salt (lithium citrate), the single-step regeneration of S-LFP is successfully achieved. The structure and composition of the regenerated LFP are significantly restored, demonstrating excellent electrochemical performance (142.7 mA h g−1) with no degradation after 200 cycles. Researchers at Tianjin University of Technology in China have reported new data on the use of rare earth metals as dopants for O3-type layered cathodes in sodium-ion batteries. The incorporation of rare earth metals, specifically scandium, improves the crystal stability and enhances the transmission of sodium ions, resulting in impressive rate capability and cycle stability at high voltages. This research sheds new light on the operational mechanism of rare metals in battery technology.
