Abstract Background Smoking continues to be the single largest cause of preventable disease and death and a major contributor to health inequalities. Dental professionals are well placed to offer behavioural support in combination with pharmacotherapy to increase smoking cessation rates across the population. We aimed to assess the trends and socioeconomic inequalities in the dental attendance of adult smokers in Scotland from 2009 to 2019 and examine the potential population reach of dental settings for smoking cessation interventions. Methods A secondary analysis was conducted of combined Scottish Health Surveys (SHeS) from 2009/11, 2013/15 and 2017/19. ‘Recent’ dental attendance (within the past two years) was the focus and descriptive analysis examined attendance of self-reported smokers compared to non-smokers and stratified by the area-based Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) and individual socioeconomic measures (income, education, and occupation). Generalised linear models were used to model recent attendance in non-smokers relative to smokers adjusted by the socioeconomic measures, for each of the survey cohorts separately. Absolute differences and risk ratios were calculated with 95% Confidence Intervals (CI). Results Recent dental attendance was generally high and increased in both smokers (70–76%) and non-smokers (84–87%) from 2009/11 to 2017/19 and increased across all SIMD groups. After adjustment for sociodemographic variables, the adjusted Risk Difference (aRD) for recent attendance between non-smokers and smokers was 8.9% (95% CI 4.6%, 13.2%) by 2017/19. Within smokers, recent attendance was 7–9% lower in those living in the most deprived areas compared to those living in the least deprived areas over the three surveys. Conclusions SHeS data from 2009 to 2019 demonstrated that a high and increasing proportion of smokers in the population attend the dentist, albeit slightly less frequently than non-smokers. There were large inequalities in the dental attendance of smokers, to a lesser extent in non-smokers, and these persisted over time. Dental settings provide a good potential opportunity to deliver population-level smoking cessation interventions, but smokers in the most deprived groups and older age groups may be harder to reach. Consideration should be given to ensure that these groups are given appropriate proportionate support to take up preventive interventions.

An effective way to reduce complexity in ecological modelling is by grouping species that share similar characteristics into functional groups or types. Often, the creation of plant functional groups (PFGs) is carried out for each case study in an ad-hoc way using a small set of traits. This limits the transferability of these PFGs to other geographical areas or study systems. We propose a novel generic framework to generate PFGs that considers the most important ecological dimensions, is applicable to case studies globally, and that emerges from patterns of functional redundancy across species. Based on most relevant and measured plant characteristics, we designed a multi-step process that includes: i) data harmonisation and missing values imputation; ii) species clustering based on multiple characteristics encompassing the main ecological dimensions featured in plant community ecological models (i.e., dispersal, competition, and demography) and iii) the combination of ecological dimension-specific groups into comprehensive PFGs. We demonstrate this framework by applying it to a global dataset of plant characteristics including a functional traits dataset and a plant-soil co-occurrence dataset for 19,102 species. Lastly, to test the ability of generated PFGs to summarise species’ functional variation within plant communities, we correlate taxonomical and functional diversity indices calculated at the species and at the PFGs level across a global dataset of plant communities (sPlotOpen). Our framework generated 465 global, robust data-driven PFGs with non-overlapping combinations of traits for each ecological dimension divided by growth form. The validation returned positive correlation values between PFGs and species-level diversity metrics, supporting the ability of the obtained PFGs to capture functional and taxonomic diversity patterns across a variety of plant communities worldwide. The framework allows for the easy integration of newly available species characteristics data. The obtained global PFGs, covering all main known ecological processes and environmental conditions at small resolution, can increase the predictive power and accuracy of process-based models and help furthering varying-scale ecological studies.

There are well established epidemiological links between rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis. Recent data have started to shed light on the mechanisms that might underlie the relationship between these two complex diseases. Unravelling the roles of distinct pathways involved in these mechanisms has the potential to yield novel preventative and therapeutic strategies for both diseases. Perhaps most intriguingly, this represents an area where understanding the biology in the oral cavity might reveal fundamental advances in understanding immune regulation and the relationships between the host and microbiome. Here we seek to discuss aspects of the adaptive immune response that might link periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Abstract The reduction of nitrate to nitrite by the oral microbiota has been proposed to be important for oral health and results in nitric oxide formation that can improve cardiometabolic conditions. Studies of bacterial composition in subgingival plaque suggest that nitrate-reducing bacteria are associated with periodontal health, but the impact of periodontitis on nitrate-reducing capacity (NRC) and, therefore, nitric oxide availability has not been evaluated. CyVerse, the largest publicly-funded open-source research cyberinfrastructure for life sciences, has played a crucial role in advancing data-driven research since the 2010s. As the technology landscape evolved with the emergence of cloud computing platforms, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) applications, CyVerse has enabled access by providing interfaces, Software as a Service (SaaS), and cloud-native Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to leverage new technologies. CyVerse services enable researchers to integrate institutional and private computational resources, custom software, perform analyses, and publish data in accordance with open science principles. Over the past 13 years, CyVerse has registered more than 124,000 verified accounts from 160 countries and was used for over 1,600 peer-reviewed publications. Since 2011, 45,000 students and researchers have been trained to use CyVerse. The platform has been replicated and deployed in three countries outside the US, with additional private deployments on commercial clouds for US government agencies and multinational corporations. In this manuscript, we present a strategic blueprint for creating and managing SaaS cyberinfrastructure and IaC as free and open-source software.

Background: Numerous studies support a bidirectional association between rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a chronic autoimmune degenerative inflammatory joint disease, and periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease caused by the immune reaction to bacteria organized in biofilms. RA and periodontitis are both multifactorial chronic inflammatory diseases that share common modifiable and non‐modifiable risk factors. There is no cure for RA; treatment is based on lifestyle modifications and a variety of medications: nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAID), glucocorticoids, and disease‐modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs, e.g., conventional synthetic DMARDs [csDMARDs]; biological DMARDs [bDMARD] and targeted synthetic DMARDs). There are molecular pathways of inflammation that are common to both RA and periodontitis. Thus, there is a potential effect of RA treatments on periodontitis. This systematic review aims to assess the impact of antirheumatic agents on periodontal conditions of patients suffering from both RA and periodontitis. Methods: PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and Embase online databases were systematically explored, and a manual search was performed to identify relevant studies published until January 2023. This review is registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42023409006). Results: A total of 2827 articles were identified, and 35 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The included studies generally show a consensus that, at normal dosage, NSAID and corticosteroids have negligible impact on periodontium. Similarly, csDMARD alone or in combination with other csDMARD demonstrated no adverse effect on periodontium. Monotherapy with bDMARD had a positive effect on periodontal pocket depths and gingival inflammation in the longitudinal studies up to 6 months but showed negligible effect on the periodontium in interventional studies with a longer follow‐up (9 months and 15.1 months). However, the combination of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)‐α inhibitors + methotrexate (MTX) was associated with a rise in gingival inflammation. Due to the considerable heterogeneity of the study designs, a meta‐analysis could not reasonably be performed. Conclusion: Within the limitations of the available studies, there is evidence to suggest that bDMARD monotherapy may improve the periodontal condition of RA patients with periodontal disease to a certain extent; the concomitant medication of TNF inhibitor + MTX could worsen gingival inflammation. The Power Threat Meaning Framework (PTMF; Johnstone & Boyle, 2018a, 2018b) has fundamentally changed both the practice of clinical psychology and the understanding of mental health since its conception in 2018. However, to date the PTMF (Johnstone & Boyle, 2018a, 2018b) has had little application to other contexts, despite being of clear relevance. Once such absence of application is to the educational context. The context of power within education has been outlined before by philosophers such as Michel Foucault, however, the PTMF (Johnstone & Boyle, 2018a, 2018b) elaborates further about how negative power operations create threat and therefore lead to responses of psychological distress. Thus, the PTMF (Johnstone & Boyle, 2018a, 2018b) could elaborate on Foucault’s theories and offer more understanding on the role of power and psychological distress in the field of education. Therefore, this paper will seek to outline the PTMF (Johnstone & Boyle, 2018a, 2018b) and highlight the ways in which the PTMF can apply to education through reference to the school structure, teachers, parents and students. Latin America is in an early stage in terms of artificial intelligence. Chile launched an artificial intelligence index for the entire region and warns about the ethical uses of this tool. The index will serve to measure and compare the performance of countries in artificial intelligence, make visible practices that could serve as a basis for other developments, promote mutual collaborations, and facilitate the monitoring of indicators.
