This work shows the importance of the press for the dissemination of poetry at the end of the 18th century and beginning of the 19th, as well as its study for a better understanding of the poetic output of the era. In particular, the article focuses on the case of Iglesias de la Casa, a Spanish author from the late 18th century and famous for his Poesías póstumas (1793), although towards the end of his life he had already published, some of those anacreontic, amorous-pastoral, and satirical poems in periodical format. By means of a critical methodology and newspaper archival research, this work reviews Iglesias' poetic work in the press and, specifically, his poetic corpus published during his lifetime, as well as his characterization according to the conditions that the medium required. Finally, the value of studying these poetic corpora in the press, specifically in the case of Iglesias, is considered because in authors from the 18th and 19th centuries, it often reveals unpublished or textual variants that allow us to delve deeper into the creative process behind those poems and their various testimonies.

It has been 44 years since the publication of one of the most influential works in the study of the history of journalism in Spain, Metodología de la historia de la prensa española (1982). This was the result of one of Pau's meetings, which were very important for a subject already consolidated today. We have specialisations in the faculties of history and communication, academic journals, reference manuals that are constantly being updated and the holding of various scientific colloquiums. Taking advantage of this commemoration, this article, which introduces the dossier on the state of research on the history of Spanish journalism, sets out some background information and points out possible ways forward. The fact is that the press is currently being approached both from the perspective of history itself and from the framework of the information and communication sciences. We note, in the set of contributions that form part of this collective work, a considerable theoretical intention, perhaps absent in some of the analyses of recent years. Finally, we do not wish to overlook the importance of the contributions that French historiography has made and continues to make in this field.

The paper introduces the R&D research project titled The institution of the «Siglo de Oro». Construction processes in the periodical press (1801-1868) (SILEM III), part of the Spanish National Research Plan, which brings together forty researchers from Spanish and European universities to explore, through an interdisciplinary approach blending historical and literary perspectives, the significant role of the nineteenth-century periodical press in shaping one of the foundations of Spanish literary historiography: the «Golden Age». This concept was instrumental in the construction of the liberal nation, relying on literary history—a nascent disciplinary field at the time—and the press as vehicles for disseminating liberal-bourgeois ideologies. The study demonstrates this through a variety of case studies, aiming to provide a representative sample of the richness of our research field. It examines how the golden institution was disseminated during this period on a journalistic and nationalist model that always used romanticism as a mirror in which to look at itself and with which to compare itself.

The newspapers published in the Canary Islands during the Second Republic, apart from alleviating, like the peninsular newspapers, the loss of a good part of the archival documentation of the time during the Civil War and Franco's autarky, have a unique interest as sources of historical documentation. We say unique because, after becoming autonomous information companies in the heat of the economic boom in the "roaring" twenties, they exercised a de facto information monopoly within the framework of the freedoms of the Second Republic. This was due to the Atlantic location of the archipelago, almost two thousand kilometers from the peninsula, where the signal from Unión Radio's news programs did not reach, nor did the attractive Madrid newspapers arrive that, by rail, arrived on the same day they were published in the peninsular periphery. It was, therefore, an unrepeatable communicative situation reminiscent of the "golden age" experienced by the press of the most developed Western countries before the outbreak of World War I.

Our main purpose is to analyse, from a general perspective, the existence of regional and local press and prove how said press is developed to such a degree in districts’ main cities, like in the capital of the then province of Logroño, now known as the Autonomous Community of La Rioja. We will examine its varied focuses, such as the political, official, religious, and educational perspectives, among others. One of the features of such press is its brevity in time: some newspapers were published for less than a year, some consisted of just a small number of initial issues, and some were only advertised for publication in another newspaper but were never actually published. Nevertheless, the phenomenon of La Rioja should also be mentioned; this newspaper was created in 1889 and it can still be read throughout the whole community of La Rioja.

After a first publication at the end of the 18th century, the periodical press for children begins to take shape in Spain in the 1840s, reaching more than seventy titles published by the end of the century. Often described as conservative because of its austerity and the density of its texts, it suffers in the historiography from comparisons with the press of the following century and with the editorial paths of neighbouring nations. Nevertheless, it is in many ways a valuable source for cultural history, since it reveals the gradual demarcation of childhood as a specific editorial market and a specific public. The children’s periodical press is also part of a wider literary and intellectual world, which must be taken into account. Finally, through its socially situated position, it offers a fascinating receptacle of representations and mentalities, where a shared class identity is beginning to emerge, within texts and images.

In neutral Spain in 1914-1918, numerous polemics fuelled the conflict between Alliedophiles and Germanophiles in the pages of the press. One of the aspects that served to air the different opinions of intellectuals and journalists attached to the different camps was the presence of a contingent of Spaniards who had enlisted as volunteers in the ranks of the French Foreign Legion. The aim of this article is to examine the view of these Spanish volunteers in the Allied and Germanophile press from a comparative perspective, in order to observe the different resources and strategies deployed to praise or denigrate the phenomenon of voluntary service, an entelechy of the timid Spanish interventionism and a phenomenon in which the Allied groups placed their desire for foreign projection. Likewise, the influence of foreign propaganda strategies and the role played by foreign services in the strengthening of the discourse on volunteers is also assessed, which can help us to better understand the needs of the Spanish press and the ways of doing journalism in the period.

The Carlist Party was a minority and extraparliamentary party during the Spanish Transition. Among the exogenous reasons expressed by this party as causes for its limited political success is the lack of opportunities to access the media. Based on this idea, we have considered a need for a review of how this political formation was portrayed by the daily press during the transition to democracy in Spain. Qualitative research methods, content and discourse analysis of the press, as well as an approach to written media from political sociology, have been employed for this purpose. The documentation from the Digital Newspaper Archive of the National Library of Spain (BNE) and the documentation from the National Historical Archive (AHN), among others, along with relevant bibliography, have served as sources for this research.

The purpose of this article is the historiographical analysis of a selection of testimonies referring to Asturian journalists who recall, within the framework of an oral history research, some of their experiences in relation to censorship and self-censorship processes (1963-1978). The interest of this approach is not to understand the mechanisms of censorship but the discursive contours of these processes based on the memories expressed by their protagonists. The methodology employed is original in the field of press history studies in that it applies the sociological notion of the ‘social framework of memory’. and, beyond the case study discussed here, initiates an alternative line of work in this field, in which the history of journalism is placed within the parameters of what are known as Memory Studies.

The socialist press published in Spain from the end of the 19th century to the 1930s needs a renewal of its study. A renewal that must transcend the limits of the history of the labor movement and its organizations. The cultural magazines edited by the socialists of Madrid from the 1890s onwards lend themselves to a revealing reinterpretation from the perspective of intellectual history. Therefore, the objective of this article is to interpret the publication of the weekly Vida Socialista (1910-1914) as an unknown enterprise of the Generation of 1914. Hypothesis that we seek to validate through the analysis of its content and its collaborators. The magazine, directed by Tomás Álvarez Angulo and Juan A. Meliá, was also one of the main press organs of the PSOE during the period of the Republican Socialist Coalition.

The purpose of this article is to study the relationship between the emergence of a new commercial and mass press and the promotion of Spanish colonialism in Morocco at the end of the 19th century. To do so, it focuses on the case of La Vanguardia, a newspaper that is as well-known as it is little studied by historians. Originally founded as a party newspaper, in 1888 the Godó family promoted a radical change in the editorial line of La Vanguardia in order to expand its readership and increase its influence. Under a new guise as an informative and business newspaper, La Vanguardia climbed the ranks to become the best-selling daily in Barcelona, while at the same time becoming the main spokesman for Africanist interests in Catalonia. The case of this newspaper offers the opportunity to study the relations between the press and lobbies, as well as examine the public dimension of issues such as imperialism and national identities. To address all these questions, we will focus on the Melilla War of 1893, a short-lived conflict that sparked strong popular mobilization.

After the end of the Spanish Civil War, Spanish anarchists were forced into exile, clandestinity and repression. Despite initial tolerance on the part of the French authorities, pressure from the Francoist government regarding the exiles intensified during the 1950s. Between 1960 and 1961 the CNT completed its reunification process, reactivating armed and propaganda actions against Franco. Based on the critical study of the Spanish libertarian publications of the exile and the documentation from international archives, this article aims to show the evolution of the Spanish anarchist press in the French exile between 1960 and 1965, the prohibitions and obstacles to which had to face in terms of its dissemination, as well as the importance that factors related to the respective French and Spanish government interests in matters of security had in its existence, and its impact as a relevant issue in the evolution of bilateral diplomatic relations between both countries.

Eighty-three years after the disappearance of the Carlist children's magazine Pelayos (1936-1938), born just a few months after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, it is reborn. Same title, same aesthetic, same ideology: nothing has changed, except Spain. Spain, led by the socialist Pedro Sánchez, was no longer at war. Children's publications are written to be entertaining, a far cry from those that once waged a communication war to enlist and indoctrinate future followers. However, Pelayos magazine –the magazine of the «new era», as stated on the official Traditionalist Communion website at the time of its launch - seems out of time, out of our time. Children are given a discourse frozen in a heritage that, while centuries old and presented to them as an asset, nonetheless remains suspended in a temporal bubble that seems impervious to modern society. And yet, the various movements that make up traditionalism do not hesitate to use the same tools they denounce, for the sake of ideological dissemination.

The Cantabrians who emigrated to Cuba between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century became one of the main communities among the Spaniards on the island. In accordance with their power, they decided to create a magazine that would showcase their prominent social position and, at the same time, spread the news from their homeland. The result of this process was La Montaña, published in Havana between 1915 and 1954. The magazine allowed the montañeses to exert a great influence in the Province of Santander, and its Cuban character made it an exception. This paper analyses the development of La Montaña together with the main personalities who directed it or collaborated in it, as well as highlighting its propagandistic nature and the conservative ideology that accompanied its editorial line. The aim is to lay the foundations for future research that will allow us to delve deeper into the history of the publication and the study of its impact.

Emilia Pardo Bazán's trip to Valencia was widely reported in the Spanish press at the end of 1899. The writer was an object of fascination for the regional press. It was recalled that she had given a lecture in Paris on the pernicious effects of certain legends on the national mood and the possible mechanisms for revitalization. His words generated an intense controversy, a battle between the main Spanish newspapers and magazines. Months later, his speech at the opening of the Valencian Athenaeum underlined the importance of education as a means of modernization and progress. This article is interested in the representations of these events in the republican newspaper El Pueblo. It approaches the compendium of cultural, visual and textual products on the public figure of a woman of letters. Her remarkable capacity for agency and will to patriotism legitimised her dissertations on the fin-de-siècle crisis.

The Great War (1914-1918) meant a process of modernization of the press and, therefore, of the journalistic profession at a global level. This development was also noticeable in regions such as the Basque Country and Navarre, where the media evolved in a very remarkable way, presenting typical features of the press of the mass society. This development was characterized by the use of new genres such as war chronicles and the use of new technologies, highlighting the cases of journalists linked to Euzkadi and Diario de Navarra. At the same time, it was accompanied by serious difficulties, especially the various forms of censorship, some exercised by the Spanish Government and others by the belligerent countries. This modernization will be analyzed by paying attention to the particular cases of journalists such as Imanol, Garcilaso, as well as to the repression suffered by numerous journalists, in particular aliadophile journalists.

The article proposes a reflection on the link between press agencies, image in international politics and diplomacy, particularizing the analysis in the period of the Cold War. The theoretical relationships between these elements are explored, and possible approaches and lines of work are proposed for research that takes these international news agencies as objects of study, from their consideration as corporations that intervene from a transnational logic. This occurs as they are private entities whose activity is carried out in a multiplicity of local scenarios of the global theater, while, at the same time, these agencies may have solid links or shared interests with one or several states, governments, or interest groups.

El Correo Español was a newspaper with a long but eventful history. Founded, as is known, to make up for the absence of a newspaper of the stature of El Siglo Futuro after the nocedalist split of 1888, El Correo Español was the emblem of the reconstruction of the Catholic-Monarchist Communion during the Headquarters-Delegate of the Marquis of Cerralbo. The reform undertaken decades after its foundation turned it into an attractive newspaper that gained a considerable number of readers for a time. The problem, however, was caused by the economic hardships that the newspaper always suffered and the difficulties that the pretending kings Charles VII and James III had in effective control of both the property and the message transmitted to the Carlist militants and sympathizers, having account of the role played by such a gazette as a transmission belt of the Communion. This is a first sketch of the evolution of the newspaper, as well as its role in the construction of Carlist culture.

This text seeks to reflect on the way in which political caricature captured the ultimate reality of the concept «press» throughout the 19th century in Spain, as well as the relevance that, as a fundamental contemporary term, it acquired at that time. A study framed in the culture of the visual is proposed to understand how the press was defined, based on the political satire of the time, in its visual and graphic discourse. Starting from the relevance of the caricature as an iconographic resource in the 1800s, as well as the importance that the press gained in the public space and in the Spanish political reality of the moment, the focus of attention is placed on the image as a further historiographical tool. for historical studies and research.
