The objective of this study was to assess the impact of oral progesterone (altrenogest) administered after mating on fertility in goats synchronized during the breeding season. A total of 47 Hair goats were included in the study. A progesterone-impregnated intravaginal sponges were administered for 12 days. On day 10 of intravaginal sponge administration, 480 IU pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin (PMSG) and 0.075 mg cloprostenol were injected intramuscularly to the goats. Animals were exposed to bucks for 12 hours after detection of estrus by the foraging buck. The goats were randomly assigned to two distinct groups: Group 1 (G1, n=23) and Group 2 (G2, n=24). G1 goats were orally administrated 4.4 mg of altrenogest per day for 30 days after mating. G2 goats served as controls. Pregnancy examinations were performed by transrectal ultrasonography on the 30th and 42nd days after mating. Blood samples were taken from one day after mating to 30 days (3-day intervals). Statistical analysis comparing G1 and G2 revealed no significant differences between the groups regarding progesterone concentrations, conception rate, pregnancy rate, lambing rate, multiple birth rate, fecundity, and litter size (p>0.05). In conclusion, this study revealed that oral progesterone use had no impact on fertility parameters. Moreover, further research is warranted to explore the efficacy of various oral progesterone analogs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Fertility desire is one of the important factors influencing population growth and women's fertility-related health outcomes. This study aimed to assess women's fertility desire and factors associated with excess fertility desire in two populations with different socio-demographic and cultural characteristics. Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary hospital in Karabuk and a health center in N'Djamena. The sample size was calculated as 611 women (311 for Karabuk, 300 for N'Djamena). The study's dependent variable is the desire to have children, which was determined by asking women about their ideal number of children. Independent variables included women's sociodemographic and reproductive characteristics, and some perceptions about women's status. The chi-square test was used to compare the sociodemographic and reproductive characteristics of women. Crude and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals were calculated via binary logistic regression analysis to explore the relationship between dependent and independent variables. Results: A total of 615 women were reached. The average ideal number of children for women was 2.7 in Karabuk and 5.6 in N'Djamena. In the whole study group multivariable logistic regression analysis, unofficial marriages (OR = 12.1), the belief that a woman's fertility is determined by her husband or God (OR = 2.5), lower education level (primary school and below) (OR = 2.4) and the husband's increasing ideal number of children (OR = 2.3) were associated with women's excess fertility desire. Conclusion: The findings of the study reveal significant differences between the fertility patterns and preferences of women in the two populations and the influence of social structure on women's fertility behaviors. Policies aimed at empowering women and eliminating gender inequalities should be pursued to protect them from the adverse effects of excess fertility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Kidney transplantation is a crucial treatment for improving the quality of life of patients with renal failure. Immunosuppressive drugs are necessary to prevent organ rejection and are vital for the success of the transplantation. However, there is limited information on the potential adverse effects of these drugs on male fertility. Observational studies suggest that paternal drug exposure, as well as maternal drug exposure, may contribute to the risk of teratogenicity. This presents challenges in managing the treatment of men on chronic medication who are planning to conceive. The purpose of this article was to raise awareness among clinicians of this issue by examining the impact of immunosuppressive drugs used in renal transplant patients on paternal fertility and teratogenicity. Although further studies are required to understand the long-term effects of these drugs, it is recommended that options such as sperm banking should be considered in patients who are planning to have children and are considering immunosuppressive therapy. - Abstract
Two recurring questions arise for gastroenterologists in charge of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Does treatment of IBD with immunosuppressants or biotherapy have an impact on fertility in men, and on the subsequent development of a pregnancy in the couple? In pregnant women, when is the best time to stop anti-TNF treatment during pregnancy, and when should the newborn be offered a live attenuated vaccine? A review of the literature and a meta-analysis collated studies describing the consequences of IBD treatment with biotherapy or immunosuppressants on spermatogenesis and the evolution of a possible pregnancy in the couple. Sperm analysis, including sperm count, morphology, and motility, did not differ with or without treatment. No adverse pregnancy events (miscarriage, prematurity and congenital malformation) were significantly different whether or not the male parents received treatment for their IBD. Recommendations concerning the use of biotherapies have recently been drawn up by the European group ECCO (European Crohn's and -Colitis -Organisation). A physiologically-based pharmacokinetic modelling study of -biotherapies in both pregnant women and exposed children sought to predict the ideal time for the last biotherapy injection, taking into account the mother's dose and the intervals between injections or infusions. - Abstract
The sterile insect technique (SIT) can be an efficient solution for reducing or eliminating certain insect pest populations. It is widely used in agriculture against fruit flies, including the Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly), Ceratitis capitata. The re-mating tendency of medfly females and the fact that the released sterile males may have some residual fertility could be a challenge for the successful implementation of the SIT. Obtaining the right balance between sterility level and sterile male quality (competitiveness, longevity, etc) is the key to a cost-efficient program. Since field experimental approaches can be impacted by many environmental variables, it is difficult to get a clear understanding on how specific parameters, alone or in combination, may affect the SIT efficiency. The use of models not only helps to gather knowledge, but it allows the simulation of a wide range of scenarios and can be easily adapted to local populations and sterile male production. In this study, we consider single- and double-mated females. We first show that SIT can be successful only if the residual fertility is less than a threshold value that depends on the basic offspring number of the targeted pest population, the re-mating rates, and the parameters of double-mated females. Then, we show how the sterile male release rate is affected by the parameters of double-mated females and the male residual fertility. Different scenarios are explored with continuous and periodic sterile male releases, with and without ginger aromatherapy, which is known to enhance sterile male competitiveness, and also taking into account some biological parameters related to females that have been mated twice, either first by a wild (sterile) male and then a sterile (wild) male, or by two wild males only. Parameter values were chosen for peach as host fruit to reflect what could be expected in the Corsican context, where SIT against the medfly is under consideration. Our results suggest that ginge

- Abstract

- Abstract
Objective: The French Law relating to Bioethics allows access to medically assisted reproduction for lesbian couples and single women and has expanded the possibilities for self-preservation of gametes. The question now arises of new uses of gametes of the couple, within couples of two cis women, one cis woman and one transgender woman, or two transgender individuals. The acronym EUGIC (Extension of the Use of Gametes in IntraCouple) allows these new situations to be grouped together, particularly if gametes have already been previously cryopreserved, thus avoiding the need for gamete donation., Methods: Analysis of the different situations of sperm use from a trans woman using gametes available within the couple rather than gamete donation., Results: The inconsistency in the use of sperm from a trans woman, the situations already encountered by professionals, the prospects for filiation for a trans woman as well as the issues related to the interest of the unborn child are discussed., Conclusion: French law does not fully address the use of a trans woman's spermatozoa to meet the new EUGIC requirements and leads to complex situations for healthcare professionals., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. In preparation for a new version of the CRAT (Centre de référence sur les agents tératogènes) website, an evaluation of user satisfaction was carried out. An invitation to complete an online questionnaire covering the various dimensions of the website (appearance, content, interactivity, ease of use, technical performance) was sent in April 2022 to healthcare professionals who referred to CRAT for clinical expertise over the previous two years. After sending out 3224 individual e-mail invitations, 758 evaluators completed the questionnaire in full (response rate: 23.5%). The evaluation revealed a high-level of overall satisfaction among site users (98.0% very satisfied or satisfied). Satisfaction with the site's appearance was also high, although comments were made about the site's lack of a modern web design. Health professionals recognized in their responses the reliable, relevant and up-to-date nature of the content of this free, public online resource, independent of the pharmaceutical industry. On the basis of these highly favorable assessments, with content that has been widely acclaimed and areas for improvement that have caught the attention of site users (evolution of its appearance, of the search tool, implementation of a mobile site), a new version of www.lecrat.fr was launched in the fall of 2023., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. - Abstract
Conditioning regimen prior to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation have an impact on patient fertility through the use of gonadal irradiation and/or bifunctional alkylating agents. Their impact on fertility depends mainly on the dose used and, in women, on age at the time of treatment. All patients should benefit before treatment from a consultation informing them of the potential impact on fertility and of fertility preservation techniques. In the absence of contraindications, the major toxicity of myeloablative conditioning regimen justifies fertility preservation. There are few data concerning fertility after reduced-intensity conditioning. Despite lower theoretical gonadotoxicity, we also recommend fertility preservation, if possible before transplantation. The fertility preservation techniques used depend on the patient's age, pathology and conditioning. In the event of subsequent use of harvested gonadal tissue in the context of acute leukemia or aggressive lymphoma, it is advisable to assess the risk of reintroduction of tumor cells. Finally, it is recommended to assess gonadal function after transplant, especially after reduced conditioning. If there is persistent residual gonadal function, post-treatment fertility preservation should be discuss., (Copyright © 2024 Société Française du Cancer. Published by Elsevier Masson SAS. - Abstract
Introduction: In France, the breast cancer is the most common cancer among women under the age of 40. From 38 to 70% of women have not fulfilled their parental plans at the time of diagnosis. The gonadotoxicity of the treatments and the follicular physiological decline linked to age can become an obstacle to this project., Methods: Among the patients, 386 were treated for breast cancer at the Centre Georges-François-Leclerc in Dijon between January 2011 and December 2018 were identified. 192 patients aged under 39 met the inclusion criteria. We excluded metastatic cancers, cancer in situ and pregnant patients at diagnosis. A total of 124 patients agreed to participate in the study. The included patients filled out a self-questionnaire. Data were collected from the patient's electronic medical. The primary endpoint of this study was the live birth rate., Result: Among women who desired a child after breast cancer, the overall rate of live births was 36.2 % (21/58). Most achieved pregnancies were spontaneous (90.5 %). No factor was significantly associated with the absence of obtaining birth. Fertility was preserved by oocyte cryopreservation in 13.8 % of patients (17/124). The median time to conception in patients who received chemotherapy was 8 months [1.0-60.0] vs 2 months [1.0-7.0] in women who did not receive chemotherapy., Discussion: The non-negligible proportion of live births following spontaneous pregnancy after breast cancer allows us to be reassuring for patients. However, the emergence of new chemotherapy protocols whose consequences on long-term gonadotoxicity are still not well known requires further studies and prompts the promotion of fertility preservation as a precautionary measure., (Copyright © 2024 Société Française du Cancer. - Abstract
This article explores women’s temporal experiences of using Assisted Reproductive Technology. The demand for such treatment has increased since the first
in vitro fertilisation birth. Assisted Reproductive Technology involves invasive procedures in women’s bodies, uncertain outcomes and temporal challenges.A sample of 11 professional women was drawn from a larger sample recruited for interviews from online infertility forums. Analysis was carried out using abiographical life course approach to draw out the temporal elements of experiences. Four themes were identified: biographical timing and temporalities of fertility treatment; biographical timing and a/synchronicity with friends; temporalities of everyday life when using Assisted Reproductive Technology; and ‘public issue’ or ‘private trouble’ in relation to silences around Assisted Reproductive Technology. Undergoing Assisted Reproductive Technology treatment sets these women apart from friends who conceive without treatment, and they faced challenges for the rhythms of everyday life during this period. Using Assisted Reproductive Technology highlighted public taboos about women’s bodies. Thus for many, this critical phase had to be kept secret. Understanding women’s temporal experiences of using Assisted Reproductive Technology and the challenges involved are important for developing context sensitive theories and concepts that can contribute to deeper insight into the intersecting temporalities of reproductive processes in general and using Assisted Reproductive Technology in particular. - Abstract
Introduction: Five cases of ovarian tumors (granulosa cell tumors) in cattle are presented from the patient load of the Vetsuisse University of Zurich and Bern. The aim of this work was to demonstrate the variable development of the illness and to indicate diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities to the practicing veterinarians. Case 1 shows bilateral appearance and the development of malignancy and metastases. The main symptoms in case 2 were the development of the mammary gland in a juvenile animal and the behavior modification due to a hormonal imbalance. The cases 3, 4 and 5 underwent surgery, case 4 restarted reproductive activity resulting in five subsequent pregnancies. The initial presumption is a result of a gynecological including ultrasonographic examination and can be verified by the analysis of Müllerian Inhibiting Hormone in serum. The decision to perform surgery should be done rapidly, as normal fertility can be achieved if the tumor is located unilaterally. Tumor growth and potential malignancy can provoke fatal health issues and also make it impossible to use meat of these animals for consumption.
