Gray mold, caused by Botrytis sp., is a significant disease in Colombian rose crops and its control depends primarily on the intensive use of chemically synthesized fungicides. Despite the importance of this pathogen, there is limited information in Colombian floriculture about molecular taxonomy of species, fungicide resistance of populations and their genetic mechanism of resistance. In this study, we analyze 12 isolates of this fungus collected from rose-producing crops in the Department of Cundinamarca and conducted phylogenetic analysis using HSP60, G3PDH, and RPB2 gene sequences. Additionally, we realize phenotypic and genotypic characterization of resistance to the fungicides fenhexamid, carboxin, and prochloraz, evaluating the in vitro EC50 and presence of mutations of target genes of each isolate. All isolates were characterized as Botrytis cinerea in the phylogenetic analysis and presents different levels of resistance to each fungicide. These levels are related to mutations in target genes, with predominancy of L195F and L400F in the ERG27 gene to fenhexamid resistance, H272R/Y in the SDHB gene for carboxin resistance, and Y136F in the CYP51 gene for prochloraz resistance. Finally, these mutations were not related to morphological changes. Collectively, this knowledge, presented for the first time to the Colombian floriculture, contribute to a better understanding of the genetic diversity and population of B. cinerea from rose-producing crops in the department of Cundinamarca, and serve as a valuable tool for making informed decisions regarding disease management, future research, and improving crop management and sustainability in the Colombian floriculture industry. The runoff threshold is the amount of precipitation that exceeds the infiltration capacity of the soil and from which water begins to flow over the land surface. Its spatial variation will determine the appearance of a series of processes and risks such as soil erosion, sediment transport, water pollution or flooding, all of which are of great interest in the field of land planning and management. This article provides an update of the runoff threshold in the territorial scope of the Demarcación Hidrográfica de las Cuencas Mediterráneas Andaluzas and evaluates the spatial changes occurred between 1990 and 2018 because of land use dynamics. For this purpose, the methodology described in Regulation 5.2-IC related to surface drainage, of the Instrucción de Carreteras (Ministerio de Obras Pu'blicas y Urbanismo [MOPU], 1990; Ministerio de Fomento, 2016, 2019) was used. The results obtained show very contrasting runoff threshold values, with maximums in the western sector and minimums in the eastern sector. On the other hand, the dynamics of land use changes have led to a significant increase in impermeable surfaces and sclerophyllous vegetation, which has generated a clear reduction in runoff threshold values in different areas, mainly in the eastern region. Specifically, the former forest areas, currently occupied by sclerophyllous vegetation, stand out, with a reduction of 17 mm over an area of approximately 229.1 km2. The conversion of agricultural lands into urban areas is also noteworthy, with a decrease in their retention capacity by up to 14 mm of precipitation, covering a total area of 97.1 km2. Objective: To analyze the state-of-the-art technology and the application of the fermentation process, in order to increase the protein value of prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica), as a source of fodder, in three technological levels. Design/Methodology/Approach: The technological parameters and mechanization level of three fermenters —employed to increase the protein value of prickly pear fodder— were characterized. The conceptual technical analysis was determined through quantitative and qualitative indicators, based on mathematical expressions and equations. Results: Quantitative indicators showed a fermentation technology with limited efficiency, which provides an opportunity for technical improvements. Findings/Conclusions: The application of fermentation technology results in significant savings in water, soil, and fertilizer resources. Furthermore, it provides an alternative for fodder production and food security for livestock in the semi-arid region of Mexico. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is a common condition with a significant impact on the quality of life of female patients. The limitations of current treatment strategies have prompted the exploration of new effective and minimally invasive alternative approaches, including cell therapy. Methods: A literature search was conducted to update the current clinical status of stem cell therapy in the management of female stress urinary incontinence. Results: Over thirty clinical studies have been designed to assess the feasibility, safety and efficacy of cell therapy for female SUI. Despite differences in cell types and protocols, the overall treatment procedures were similar. Standard subjective and objective assessment tools, and follow-up periods ranged from 6 weeks to 6 years have been used. Cell injection has shown to be a safe therapy in the treatment of female SUI. However, the results from more recent randomized trials have shown less promising results than expected in restoring continence. Heterogeneous research methodologies using different cell types and doses make it difficult to draw conclusions about effectiveness. Several key points remain that need to be further explored in future clinical trials. Conclusion: To advance in the development of cell therapy, it is essential to know the mechanisms involved to be able to direct it properly, its efficacy and the durability of the injected cells. Rigorous and homogenized preclinical and clinical studies that demonstrate its scope and improve its application are necessary for validation in the treatment of female SUI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the resistive switching phenomena in TiN/Ti/HfO2/Ti metal–insulator–metal stacks is investigated, mainly focusing on the analysis of set and reset transitions. The electrical measurements in a wide temperature range reveal that the switching transitions require less voltage (and thus, less energy) as temperature rises, with the reset process being much more temperature sensitive. The main conduction mechanism in both resistance states is Space-charge-limited Conduction, but the high conductivity state also shows Schottky emission, explaining its temperature dependence. Moreover, the temporal evolution of these transitions reveals clear differences between them, as their current transient response is completely different. While the set is sudden, the reset process development is clearly non-linear, closely resembling a sigmoid function. This asymmetry between switching processes is of extreme importance in the manipulation and control of the multi-level characteristics and has clear implications in the possible applications of resistive switching devices in neuromorphic computing. Background: Pheochromocytoma is a rare disease, and its familial occurrence is quite uncommon. The aim of this paper is to report a three-generation phenotypical expression of a case familial occurrence of pheochromocytoma. Case presentation: A 25-year-old female, with a history of adrenalectomy for pheochromocytoma, arrived at the shock room during her third pregnancy with an adrenergic crisis and hypoglycemia. To prevent perinatal complications, the patient was stabilized and the newborn was delivered through a Kerr-type cesarean section. A detailed history revealed that the paternal grandfather of the patient had an unilateral pheochromocytoma, whereas her paternal uncle had a bilateral pheochromocytoma. Additionally, a brother of the patient presented a unilateral pheochromocytoma. Amplicons for PCR assays were designed to span the protein-coding segments of the three Von Hippel–Lindau (VHL) exons, and the PCR products were sequenced using the Sanger method. In the trace of exon 3, we detected in the sample of the proband a heterozygous guanine to adenine transition (NM_000551.4 c. 552G > A) within the protein-coding segment of exon 3 of the VHL gene, which leads to a substitution of the arginine residue at position 161 by a glutamine residue in the encoded peptide (NP_000542.1p.R161Q). This mutation was absent in two unaffected daughters. Conclusion: A VHL mutation was suspected and confirmed in this family that was not transmitted to a fourth generation. This case illustrates the importance of molecular genetics methodologies to assist genetic counseling in cases of pheochromocytoma where familial aggregation is presumed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) adds a substantial disease burden, including higher mortality, when associated with interstitial lung disease (ILD), a severe, chronic, progressive condition. Yet little is known of the lived experiences, perspectives, priorities, and viewpoints of patients and carers living with PH‐ILD. The Voice of the Patient meeting at the center of this qualitative research study aims to provide these difficult‐to‐obtain insights from a European perspective for the first time. The multistakeholder approach brought together four PH‐ILD patients, three primary caregivers, two patient associations, clinical experts, sponsor representatives, and a facilitator. Of the six major themes identified in the thematic analysis, symptoms, and physical limitations were the most impactful. Shortness of breath was the most bothersome symptom affecting patients daily. Further symptoms included fatigue, cough, dizziness, syncope, edema, and palpitations. Physical limitations focused on reduced mobility, impacting patients' ability to perform daily tasks, hobbies, sports, and to enjoy travel. Existing antifibrotic and pulmonary arterial hypertension‐targeted treatments were perceived as beneficial. However, despite advances in treatment, severe disease burdens and high unmet medical needs persist from the perspectives of patients. Most meaningful to patients' daily wellbeing was supplemental oxygen, enabling greater mobility. Patients and carers reported difficulties and barriers in navigating the healthcare system and obtaining adequate information to reduce their considerable uncertainties, documenting the substantial challenges that rare and complex conditions such as PH‐ILD pose for routine clinical practice beyond PH expert centers and indicating an urgent need for high‐quality patient‐ and clinician‐directed information to support patient‐centered care. We assessed the association between cirrhosis and severe COVID-19-related outcomes among people with laboratory-diagnosed COVID-19 infection in British Columbia, Canada. We used data from the British Columbia (BC) COVID-19 Cohort, a population-based cohort that integrates data on all individuals tested for COVID-19, with data on hospitalizations, medical visits, emergency room visits, prescription drugs, chronic conditions, and deaths in the Canadian province of BC. We included all individuals aged ≥18 who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2021. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to assess the associations of cirrhosis status with COVID-19-related hospitalization and with ICU admission. Of the 162,509 individuals who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 and were included in the analysis, 768 (0.5%) had cirrhosis. In the multivariable models, cirrhosis was associated with increased odds of hospitalization (aOR = 1.97, 95% CI: 1.58–2.47) and ICU admission (aOR = 3.33, 95% CI: 2.56–4.35). In the analyses stratified by age, we found that the increased odds of ICU admission among people with cirrhosis were present in all the assessed age-groups.
