Parasitoids have an exceptional lifestyle where juvenile development is spent on or in a single host insect, but the adults are free-living. Unlike parasites, parasitoids kill the host. How parasitoids use such a limiting resource, particularly lipids, can affect chances to survive and reproduce. In part 1, we describe the parasitoid lifestyle, including typical developmental strategies. Lipid metabolism in parasitoids has been of interest to researchers since the 1960s and continues to fascinate ecologists, evolutionists, physiologists, and entomologists alike. One reason of this interest is that the majority of parasitoids do not accumulate triacylglycerols as adults. Early research revealed that some parasitoid larvae mimic the fatty acid composition of the host, which may result from a lack of de novo triacylglycerol synthesis. More recent work has focused on the evolution of lack of adult triacylglycerol accumulation and consequences for life history traits. In part 2 of this chapter, we discuss research efforts on lipid metabolism in parasitoids from the 1960s onwards. Parasitoids are also master manipulators of host physiology, including lipid metabolism, having evolved a range of mechanisms to affect the release, synthesis, transport, and take-up of lipids from the host. Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) with high energy efficiency, reliable performance, and a relatively simple structure are widely utilised in various applications. In this paper, a suboptimal controller is proposed for PMSMs without sensors based on the state-dependent Riccati equation (SDRE) technique combined with customised impulsive observers (IOs). Here, the SDRE technique facilitates a pseudo-linearised display of the motor with state-dependent coefficients (SDCs) while preserving all its nonlinear features. Considering the risk of non-available/non-measurable states in the motor due to sensor and instrumentation costs, the SDRE is combined with IOs to estimate the PMSM speed and position states. Customised IOs are proven to be capable of obtaining quality, continuous estimates of the motor states despite the discrete format of the output signals. The simulation results in this work illustrate an accurate state estimation and control mechanism for the speed of the PMSM in the presence of load torque disturbances and reference speed changes. The electric drives used in traction applications employ conventionally pure Cu bars bent to the required form, inserted in the stator and welded by a laser at the extremities. These extremities, which are referred to as Cu hairpins, should be stripped off from the electrically isolating polymeric enamel. Laser stripping is industrially used to remove the enamel from the Cu surface. Pulsed wave lasers are employed for the purpose with a large variety of solutions industrially available to the end users. The peculiar process may give way to material removal by surface heating for instance using infrared radiation (IR) or ultraviolet (UV) lasers or an indirect material expulsion via near-infrared (NIR) sources. Accordingly all major laser sources, namely CO2, active fiber, active disk, and Nd:YAG at different wavelengths, may be used for the purpose. Such laser sources possess very different characteristics regarding the pulse durations, power levels, and beam diameters. As newer laser system solutions are made available, the need for methods and experimental procedures to compare the process performance also increases. This work compares 7 different hairpin stripping solutions based on contemporary pulsed laser sources along with a detailed comparative analysis method. Initially, the 7 laser sources are used for hairpin stripping. The process quality is analyzed through surface morphology, chemistry, and the mechanical strength upon laser welding. Productivity and efficiency indicators are collected. Using the collected data, the work proposes system configurations for three different scenarios prioritizing quality, productivity, and cost. Due to new requirements regarding the efficiency of electrical machines it is necessary to steadily improve machine concepts or create new ones. Therefore, manufacturing technology has to be continuously improved, adapted or developed new. Forming technology offers an excellent opportunity to implement components for highly efficient electrical machines through its advantages regarding high productivity and high degree of material usage. This paper presents a new method for bending complete stacks of grain oriented electric sheets for use as radially laminated modules in an innovative machine concept with flux barriers. First, the principle of electric drives with flux barriers and the arrangement of the new radial lamination are explained. Then, practical preliminary studies concerning the bending of single sheets are performed. Based on this, the process and tooling for bending of pre-stacked sheets is developed and analysed. Accordingly, an increase in material utilisation of about 30% can be expected compared to classically designed stators. Furthermore, the use of the radially laminated stator principle increases the slot area by about 20% which makes it possible to insert more copper into the slot and thus increase the efficiency of the machine during operation. After validation of the process chain with a demonstrator motor and description of several manufacturing and quality improvements, finally, an outlook is given, and possible further research approaches are discussed. Modern electric motors developed for the automotive industry have an ever higher power density with a relatively compact size. Among the various existing solutions to improve torque and power density, a reduction in the dimensions of the end-windings has been explored, aiming to decrease volume, weight, and losses. However, more compact end-windings often lead to complex shapes of the conductors, especially when preformed hairpin windings are considered. The rectangular cross-section of hairpin conductors makes them prone to deviating out of the bending plane during the forming process. This phenomenon, known as torsional–flexural instability, is influenced by the specific aspect ratio of the cross-section dimensions and the bending direction. This study focuses on understanding this instability phenomenon, aiming to identify a potential threshold of the cross-section aspect ratio. The instability makes it difficult to predict the final geometry, potentially compromising the compliance with the geometric tolerances. A finite element model is developed to analyse a single planar bend in a hairpin conductor. Various cross-section dimensions with different aspect ratios are simulated identifying those that experience instability. Moreover, an experimental campaign is conducted to confirm the occurrence of instability by testing the same single planar bending. The experimental data obtained are used to validate the finite element model for the tested dimensions. The aim is to provide designers with a useful tool to select hairpin geometries that are more suitable for the folding process, contributing to successful assembly and improving the overall design process of preformed hairpin conductors. In order to solve the problem of large eddy current losses and high temperature rises caused by a large number of permanent magnets, a new type of combined-magnetic-pole permanent magnet motor is proposed in this paper. The sinusoidally distributed subdomain model of a non-uniform-air-gap rotor was established using the Laplace equation, and the analytical expression of eddy current losses in the rotor in a uniform air gap and non-uniform air gap was derived. The effect of the rotor's eccentricity on eddy current losses was obtained. According to the characteristics of the distributed winding of the non-uniform-air-gap combined-pole permanent magnet motor, an equivalent treatment was performed to obtain the equivalent thermal conductivity value; to establish an equivalent thermal network model of the motor; determine the temperature of each component of the motor; and verify the correctness of the thermal network model through magnetothermal bidirectional coupling. Finally, an experimental platform was set up to carry out temperature rise experiments on the two prototypes. The experimental results show that a non-uniform-air-gap rotor structure can effectively reduce a rotor's eddy current losses and motor temperature rise, as well as verify the accuracy of the analytical model's calculation results. To reduce the influence of the permanent magnet (PM) installation error on the electromagnetic characteristics of the outer rotor permanent magnet synchronous motor (OPMSM), the rotor structure of the OPMSM is optimized in this paper. The optimization method of adding auxiliary teeth on the surface of the rotor core is studied, and the influence of different auxiliary teeth heights on the electromagnetic performance of OPMSM is analyzed. It is found that adding auxiliary teeth with suitable height can greatly reduce the installation error of the PM, increase the mechanical stability of the motor, and ensure that the electromagnetic characteristics of the motor remain at a good level. Firstly, the topology and parameters of the motor proposed in this paper are introduced and analyzed. Secondly, the influence of PM installation error on the electromagnetic performance of the motor is analyzed based on the finite element method (FEM), and the necessity of eliminating PM installation error is demonstrated. Then, the parametric scanning method is used to analyze the influence of auxiliary teeth height change on the electromagnetic performance of the motor, and the selection standard of the optimal auxiliary teeth height is determined. This study aims to report three new species of Conoideocrella and Moelleriella from Yunnan Province, Southwestern China. Species of Conoideocrella and Moelleriella parasitize scale insects (Coccidae and Lecaniidae, Hemiptera) and whiteflies (Aleyrodidae, Hemiptera). Based on the phylogenetic analyses of the three-gene nrLSU, tef-1α, and rpb1, it showed one new record species (Conoideocrella tenuis) and one new species (Conoideocrella fenshuilingensis sp. nov.) in the genus Conoideocrella, and two new species, i.e., Moelleriella longzhuensis sp. nov. and Moelleriella jinuoana sp. nov. in the genus Moelleriella. The three new species were each clustered into separate clades that distinguished themselves from one another. All of them were distinguishable from their allied species based on their morphology. Morphological descriptions, illustrations, and comparisons of the allied taxa of the four species are provided in the present paper. Herbivore-induced plant organic volatiles (HIPVs) have recently been studied to improve biological pest control. In contrast, the effects of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are not induced by herbivory (non-HIPVs) have received less attention. The latter are essential in the first stages of crop colonization by entomophagous insects (predators and parasitoids) used in biological pest control programs. Furthermore, the effects on entomophagous insects of different cultivars of a cultivated botanical species have not been studied. The aim of this work was to study the different non-HIPVs found in 10 tomato cultivars used in tomato greenhouses on two entomophages: the egg parasitoid Trichogramma achaeae (Hymenoptera, Trichogrammatidae) and the zoo-phytophagous predator Nesidiocoris tenuis (Hemiptera, Miridae). The results indicate that although there is considerable quantitative and qualitative variation in the emission of VOCs in the 10 tomato cultivars analysed, this variability made it difficult to determine the influence of the volatiles on the attraction of the predatory species N. tenuis, with only one cultivar (Rebelion) exhibiting a significantly higher attractiveness than the rest of the cultivars. For the parasitoid T. achaeae, these same volatiles had a significant effect (in part) on parasitoid behaviour. However, this attraction was not reflected in the discriminant analysis, at least for the volatiles analysed. The analysis showed four groups of well-differentiated cultivars, according to the non-HIPV composition, and this bore no relation to the levels of attractiveness registered in the different cultivars, with the exception again of the Rebelion cultivar, which seems not to be very attractive for the parasitoid and its parasitism activity. Introduction: Managing soil fertility remains one of the major concerns of smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). In order to understand the adoption potential of recommended practices to smallholders, this study aimed to characterize the resource availability, allocation and use patterns, and the soil fertility management practices in the maize farming system in northern Benin. Methods: A survey was conducted with 262 households randomly selected across three municipalities from three agro-ecological zones. Focus groups discussions and individual interviews were conducted with the household heads using an interview guide and a structured questionnaire respectively. The main data collected included (a) the socio-economic characteristics of households, (b) the main farm type and their characteristics and (c) the current soil fertility management strategies and the rationale behind. Results and discussion: The main soil fertility practices included the use of mineral fertilizer, manure, and crop residues application to plots. As a general trend, the rates of fertilizers applied by farmers [on average 132 ± 8.5 and 59 ± 5.8 kg ha-1 of Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium (NPK) and urea] were below those recommended or required to ensure optimal maize yields. Five farm types corresponding to different resource endowments or wealth classes were identified. The scarce resource farms owned by the majority of poorer farmers use only small amounts of manure and fertilizer in their fields. Qualitative analysis indicated that farms have different constraints and opportunities to adopt newly proposed soil fertility management recommendations. Conclusion: Extension services and decision makers must target specific interventions for appropriation and sustainability of technologies to resource mostly the smallholder farmers. Background: The sweet potato whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) is a globally important insect pest that damages crops through direct feeding and by transmitting viruses. Current B. tabaci management revolves around the use of insecticides, which are economically and environmentally costly. Host plant resistance is a sustainable option to reduce the impact of whiteflies, but progress in deploying resistance in crops has been slow. A major obstacle is the high cost and low throughput of screening plants for B. tabaci resistance. Oviposition rate is a popular metric for host plant resistance to B. tabaci because it does not require tracking insect development through the entire life cycle, but accurate quantification is still limited by difficulties in observing B. tabaci eggs, which are microscopic and translucent. The goal of our study was to improve quantification of B. tabaci eggs on several important crop species: cassava, cowpea, melon, sweet potato and tomato. Results: We tested a selective staining process originally developed for leafhopper eggs: submerging the leaves in McBryde's stain (acetic acid, ethanol, 0.2% aqueous acid Fuchsin, water; 20:19:2:1) for three days, followed by clearing under heat and pressure for 15 min in clearing solution (LGW; lactic acid, glycerol, water; 17:20:23). With a less experienced individual counting the eggs, B. tabaci egg counts increased after staining across all five crops. With a more experienced counter, egg counts increased after staining on melons, tomatoes, and cowpeas. For all five crops, there was significantly greater agreement on egg counts across the two counting individuals after the staining process. The staining method worked particularly well on melon, where egg counts universally increased after staining for both counting individuals. Conclusions: Selective staining aids visualization of B. tabaci eggs across multiple crop plants, particularly species where leaf morphological features obscure eggs, such as melons and tomatoes. The study examined the feasibility of using wind energy to supply energy to field military shooting ranges of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The object of study is a mobile wind turbine with a vertical axis of rotation. Theoretical studies have identified key factors influencing turbine modes and performance, which has led to the selection of optimal placement options. The proposed system took into account the power supply needs of troops in the field, with special attention to the energy-consuming equipment of field military shooting ranges as the main consumers. A comparative analysis has established the superiority of a mobile wind turbine with a vertical axis over traditional wind generators with a horizontal axis. The developed turbine design provides full coverage of the airflow regardless of direction, with an optimal blade angle of 60°. Theoretical studies included studying the airflow around the blade at different angles of attack, which provides insight into drag and lift. The basis for the development was the designed model of a mobile wind turbine, protected by a patent, characterized by mobility, sectionality and the ability to adapt to various environmental conditions. Its simple and compact design, combined with a vertical axis of rotation, ensures an uninterrupted power supply, especially at remote military installations and border areas. This research led to the development of a model for calculating the parameters of a mobile wind turbine suitable for powering troops in the field. The study demonstrates the potential of mobile wind power plants to significantly enhance energy reliability at military shooting ranges. The parasitic mite Varroa destructor (Anderson and Trueman) is one of the greatest stressors of Apis mellifera (L.) honey bee colonies. When Varroa infestations reach damaging levels during fall, rapid control is necessary to minimize damage to colonies. We performed a field trial in the US Southeast to determine if a combination of registered treatments (Apivar, amitraz-based; and Apiguard, thymol-based) could provide rapid and effective control of Varroa. We compared colonies that received this combination treatment against colonies that received amitraz-based positive control treatments: (i) Apivar alone; or (ii) amitraz emulsifiable concentrate ("amitraz EC"). While not registered, amitraz EC is used by beekeepers in the United States in part because it is thought to control Varroa more rapidly and effectively than registered products. Based on measurements of Varroa infestation rates of colonies after 21 days of treatment, we found that the combination treatment controlled Varroa nearly as rapidly as the amitraz EC treatment: this or other combinations could be useful for Varroa management. At the end of the 42-day trial, colonies in the amitraz EC group had higher bee populations than those in the Apivar group, which suggests that rapid control helps reduce Varroa damage. Colonies in the combination group had lower bee populations than those in the amitraz EC group, which indicates that the combination treatment needs to be optimized to avoid damage to colonies. Bemisia tabaci is an important agricultural pest that has been causing significant economic losses to crops across the globe. Destruxins are secondary metabolites of entomopathogenic fungi which can be used as a potential biopesticide against B. tabaci. However, little is known about the molecular mechanism involved in the regulation of the immune response of B. tabaci post-destruxin application. In this study, we explored the molecular responses of B. tabaci exposed to destruxin A (DA) using RNA-Seq. A total of 1702, 616, and 555 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in B. tabaci after 4, 8, and 12 h of DA treatment. In addition, 39 putative detoxification-related DEGs including 29 cytochrome P450s (P450s), 5 glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), and 5 carboxylesterases (CarEs) were also identified. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis indicated that the expression profiles of 19 random DEGs were consistent with the RNA-Seq results. These findings serve as valuable information for a better understanding of the interaction and molecular mechanisms involved in the defense response of B. tabaci against DA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sweet potato leaf curl virus (SPLCV) is a whitefly-transmitted begomovirus infecting sweetpotato and other morning glory (Convolvulaceae) species worldwide. The virus is widespread at the USDA, ARS, U.S. Vegetable Laboratory (USVL), and testing of germplasm maintained in the breeding program indicates nearly 100% infection in storage roots of materials propagated for at least four years. Prior to the public release of new germplasm, viruses must be eliminated via laborious and time-consuming meristem-tip culture. The identification of virus-free seedlings early in the selection process can offer an alternative to meristem-tip culture. In this study, we investigated the transmission of SPLCV over two years of consecutive field plantings (early and late) of sweetpotato. While SPLCV is endemic at the USVL, virus transmission pressure over the typical cultivation season is unknown, and avoidance of virus transmission paired with the selection and maintenance of clean material may be a viable alternative to virus elimination. In 2022, the storage roots of 39 first-year seedling (FYS) selections were tested for SPLCV after early-season cultivation, revealing a single selection (2.6%) with a positive test. Similar testing was conducted in 2023 with no SPLCV-positive FYS selections detected. To further assess SPLCV acquisition in the field, replicated late-season plantings of each selected FYS (n = 37) were monitored from planting to harvest. Testing was conducted at 60 and 120 days after planting (DAP). Approximately 35% of the bulk samples were infected at 60 DAP, and infection increased to 52.3% by 120 DAP. Testing of individuals within selected positive bulked samples did not support 100% infection at harvest. Altogether, these results demonstrate that SPLCV transmission during early planting is sufficiently low to facilitate the maintenance of virus-free selections, offering an alternative to virus cleaning and a cultivation strategy that may be leveraged for production. Simple Summary: The present study explores the impact of alternative prey on predator–prey dynamics in two contexts, without and with intraguild predation (IGP). It was found that without IGP, G. punctipes displayed a generalized functional response regardless of the alternative prey. However, under IGP conditions, the predator's functional response shifted to Type II, but the alternative prey did affect this response and it turned to a generalized type. In both contexts, handling times increased and consumption of the focal prey decreased as the density of the alternative prey increased. The presence of parasitized whitefly nymphs notably affected predator–prey dynamics, probably due to changes in prey characteristics. In biological control, joint releases of predators and parasitoids are standard. However, intraguild predation (IGP) can occur when a predator attacks a parasitoid, potentially affecting pest control dynamics. In addition to the focal prey (FP), Trialeurodes vaporariorum, the intraguild predator (IG-predator) Geocoris punctipes can consume the parasitoid Eretmocerus eremicus (IG-prey). In this IGP context with multiple prey, an alternative prey (AP), like the aphid Myzus persicae, may influence interactions. Theory predicts that, in simple interactions, a predator's functional response (FR) to the FP changes with the presence of an AP. However, whether this holds in an IGP context is unknown. In this study, we empirically tested that prediction. Our results show that without IGP, G. punctipes exhibits a generalized FR with and without AP. Nevertheless, with IGP, the predator exhibited a Type II FR at low and high AP densities, increasing pressure on the FP and potentially favoring short-term biological control strategies. However, when 25 AP were offered, the predator's response shifted, underscoring the importance of monitoring AP densities to prevent potential disruptions in FP control. In both contexts, the increase in AP produced a handling time increase and a decrease in consumption rate. These results indicate that the theoretical prediction of the effect of AP on the FR is met only under specific conditions, and the complexity of multitrophic interactions must be considered. Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood (greenhouse whitefly) are worldwide polyphagous pests of economic importance that damage solanaceous vegetables. Neonicotinoid pesticides and parasitoid Encarsia formmosa Gahan are the main management strategies applied worldwide, but precise control methods in greenhouse vegetables need to be developed to reduce the application amounts of pesticides and improve the suppression of whitefly populations. Therefore, we assessed the indoor acute toxicities and risk assessment of neonicotinoids for T. vaporariorum and E. formosa adults and pupae and compared the control effects of E. formosa and neonicotinoid acetamiprid. According to the acute toxicities results, most neonicotinoid insecticides were more toxic to E. formosa than T. vaporariorum, and pupae were much less susceptible than adults of both species. Moreover, acetamiprid had a low risk effect on E. formosa. Sole application of E. formosa and acetamiprid could effectively control T. vaporariorum, but their combined application resulted in antagonistic effects on the control of T. vaporariorum. The results showed that a combined application or sole use of E. formosa could reduce the use of insecticides, slow down the development of insecticide resistance in whiteflies, and improve the efficiency of controlling the growth of whitefly populations in greenhouse vegetable production. Cassava (Manihot esculenta) is among the most important staple crops globally, with an imperative role in supporting the Sustainable Development Goal of 'Zero hunger'. In sub-Saharan Africa, it is cultivated mainly by millions of subsistence farmers who depend directly on it for their socio-economic welfare. However, its yield in some regions has been threatened by several diseases, especially the cassava brown streak disease (CBSD). Changes in climatic conditions enhance the risk of the disease spreading to other planting regions. Here, we characterise the current and future distribution of cassava, CBSD and whitefly Bemisia tabaci species complex in Africa, using an ensemble of four species distribution models (SDMs): boosted regression trees, maximum entropy, generalised additive model, and multivariate adaptive regression splines, together with 28 environmental covariates. We collected 1,422 and 1,169 occurrence records for cassava and Bemisia tabaci species complex from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility and 750 CBSD occurrence records from published literature and systematic surveys in East Africa. Our results identified isothermality as having the highest contribution to the current distribution of cassava, while elevation was the top predictor of the current distribution of Bemisia tabaci species complex. Cassava harvested area and precipitation of the driest month contributed the most to explain the current distribution of CBSD outbreaks. The geographic distributions of these target species are also expected to shift under climate projection scenarios for two mid-century periods (2041–2060 and 2061–2080). Our results indicate that major cassava producers, like Cameron, Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Nigeria, are at greater risk of invasion of CBSD. These results highlight the need for firmer agricultural management and climate-change mitigation actions in Africa to combat new outbreaks and to contain the spread of CBSD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Permanent magnet motors (PMMs) have emerged as key components in numerous industrial applications due to their high efficiency, compact size, and robust performance characteristics. However, to attain optimal performance in PMM drives, accurately predicting and mitigating core losses is paramount. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of advancements and methodologies for enhancing the performance of PMM drives by integrating equivalent circuit models (ECMs) that account for core losses. Firstly, the significance of core losses in motor drives is underscored, alongside a survey of research endeavors dedicated to core loss reduction. Notably, emphasis is placed on mathematical models offering both swift computation and reasonable accuracy. Subsequently, the paper delves into the development of ECMs, focusing on approaches adept at capturing core loss effects across diverse operating conditions. Moreover, this paper explores the utilization of these improved ECMs in the design and control of PMMs to achieve enhanced performance. By integrating core loss considerations into design and control strategies, PMM drives can optimize efficiency, torque production, and overall system performance. Simple Summary: Bacterial symbionts, especially Wolbachia, are vital in many physiological processes of insects. However, the mean infection prevalence of Wolbachia in many species of lepidopteran insects is relatively low. Here, we investigated the infection, composition, abundance, and diversity of bacterial symbionts, especially Wolbachia, associated with Spodoptera frugiperda. Our results revealed that Wolbachia was found in the ovaries and salivary glands of S. frugiperda female adults. Although the infection and abundance of Wolbachia varied between geographical populations, they all belonged to the supergroup B and were named the wFru strain, which has been considered to potentially induce cytoplasmic incompatibility. These findings may provide a foundation for developing potential biocontrol techniques for S. frugiperda. Bacterial symbionts associated with insects can be crucial in insect nutrition, metabolism, immune responses, development, and reproduction. However, the bacterial symbionts of the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda remain unclear. S. frugiperda is an invasive polyphagous pest that severely damages many crops, particularly maize and wheat. Here, we investigated the infection, composition, abundance, and diversity of bacterial symbionts, especially Wolbachia, in different tissues of S. frugiperda female adults. The infection prevalence frequencies of Wolbachia in five provinces of China, namely Pu'er, Yunnan; Nanning, Guangxi; Sanya, Hainan; Yunfu, Guangdong; and Nanping, Fujian, were assessed. The results indicated that Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidetes were the three most dominant bacterial phyla in S. frugiperda adults. At the genus level, the abundant microbiota, which included Enterobacter and Enterococcus, varied in abundance between tissues of S. frugiperda. Wolbachia was found in the ovaries and salivary glands of S. frugiperda adults, and was present in 33.33% of the Pu'er, Yunnan, 23.33% of the Nanning, Guangxi, and 13.33% of the Sanya, Hainan populations, but Wolbachia was absent in the Yunfu, Guangdong and Nanping, Fujian populations. Further phylogenetic analyses revealed that all of the Wolbachia strains from the different S. frugiperda populations belonged to the supergroup B and were named the wFru strain. Since there were Wolbachia strains inducing cytoplasmic incompatibility in supergroup B, these findings may provide a foundation for developing potential biocontrol techniques against S. frugiperda. This study focuses on the first detection in Europe of a parasitoid Eretmocerus sp. gr. serius (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) on the Orange Spiny Whitefly, Aleurocanthus spiniferus (Quaintance) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae). Through extensive field surveys, this study investigates the occurrence of the aphelinid in several regions across central and southern Italy. Different sites were monitored to investigate the Eretmocerus sp. gr. serius parasitization rate on A. spiniferus, shedding light on its potential as a biological control agent against the invasive whitefly pest. The research results offer a hopeful prospect for progressing sustainable and eco-friendly methods in handling A. spiniferus infestations in citrus crops, highlighting the importance of natural enemies in integrated pest management programs. The European Commission requested the EFSA Panel on Plant Health to evaluate the probability of entry of pests (likelihood of pest freedom at entry), including both regulated and non‐regulated pests, associated with unrooted cuttings of the genera Petunia and Calibrachoa produced under physical isolation in Kenya. The relevance of any pest for this opinion was based on evidence following defined criteria, based on the methodology used for High‐Risk Plants adapted for the specificity of this assessment. Fourteen EU‐regulated pests (Bemisia tabaci, cowpea mild mottle virus, Liriomyza huidobrensis, Liriomyza sativae, Liriomyza trifolii, potato leafroll virus, potato spindle tuber viroid, Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum, R. solanacearum, Scirtothrips dorsalis, tomato mild mottle virus, tomato spotted wilt virus, tomato yellow leaf curl virus and Xanthomonas vesicatoria) and six EU non‐regulated pests (Aleurodicus dispersus, pepper veinal mottle virus, Nipaecoccus viridis, Phenacoccus solenopsis, Tetranychus neocaledonicus and tomato yellow ring virus) fulfilled all relevant criteria and were selected for further evaluation. For these pests, the risk mitigation measures proposed in the technical dossier from Kenya were evaluated, taking into account the possible limiting factors. Additionally, an expert judgement is given on the likelihood of pest freedom, taking into consideration the risk mitigation measures acting on the pest, including uncertainties associated with the assessment. The estimated degree of pest freedom varies among the pests evaluated, with T. neocaledonicus being the pest most frequently expected on the imported cuttings. The Expert Knowledge Elicitation indicated, with 95% certainty, that between 9942 and 10,000 bags containing unrooted cuttings of Petunia spp. and Calibrachoa spp. per 10,000 would be free of T. neocaledonicus. The gall-midge Psectrosema tamaricum (Kieffer 1912) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) forms small ovoid or fusiform swelling galls on the leaf branches and flowering shoots of Tamarix nilotica (Ehrenb.) (Family: Tamaricaceae). The present work studies the interaction of P. tamaricum with T. nilotica. It is an attempt to predict the potential current distribution of P. tamaricum and the host plant T. nilotica in Egypt using ecological-niche modeling.; in addition to the effect of altitude and vegetation cover on its distribution. Within the study areas, the number of galls per plant and plant cover had a significant positive correlation. There was no statistically significant relationship between the number of galls per plant and elevation. Temperature, elevation, and relative humidity were the strongest determinants of P. tamaricum potential distribution. Precipitation, soil types, and temperature were the most significant predictors for the potential distribution of T. nilotica. The present study suggests that gall-forming insects prefer larger plants to small plants. The present study reported that the highly suitable habitat for P. tamaricum is lower than for T. nilotica by 93.4% of the total highly suitable area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The Argentine stem weevil (ASW, Listronotus bonariensis) is a significant pasture pest in Aotearoa New Zealand, primarily controlled by the parasitoid biocontrol agent Microctonus hyperodae. Despite providing effective control of ASW soon after release, M. hyperodae parasitism rates have since declined significantly, with ASW hypothesised to have evolved resistance to its biocontrol agent. While the parasitism arsenal of M. hyperodae has previously been investigated, revealing many venom components and an exogenous novel DNA virus Microctonus hyperodae filamentous virus (MhFV), the effects of said arsenal on gene expression in ASW during parasitism have not been examined. In this study, we performed a multi-species transcriptomic analysis to investigate the biology of ASW parasitism by M. hyperodae, as well as the decline in efficacy of this biocontrol system. Results: The transcriptomic response of ASW to parasitism by M. hyperodae involves modulation of the weevil's innate immune system, flight muscle components, and lipid and glucose metabolism. The multispecies approach also revealed continued expression of venom components in parasitised ASW, as well as the transmission of MhFV to weevils during parasitism and some interrupted parasitism attempts. Transcriptomics did not detect a clear indication of parasitoid avoidance or other mechanisms to explain biocontrol decline. Conclusions: This study has expanded our understanding of interactions between M. hyperodae and ASW in a biocontrol system of critical importance to Aotearoa-New Zealand's agricultural economy. Transmission of MhFV to ASW during successful and interrupted parasitism attempts may link to a premature mortality phenomenon in ASW, hypothesised to be a result of a toxin-antitoxin system. Further research into MhFV and its potential role in ASW premature mortality is required to explore whether manipulation of this viral infection has the potential to increase biocontrol efficacy in future. Question: The large earth bumble bee (Bombus terrestris) maintains a social core gut-microbiota, similar as known from the honey bee, which plays an important role for host health and resistance. Experiments under laboratory conditions with commercial hives are limited to vertically transmitted microbes and neglect influences of environmental factors or external acquisition of microbes. Various environmental and landscape-level factors may have an impact on the gutmicrobiota of pollinating insects, with consequences for pollinator health and fitness in agroecosystems. Still, it is not fully clear whether access to different flower diversities will have a significant influence on the bumble bee microbiota. Here, we tested in a semi-field experiment if the bumble bee microbiota changes over time when exposed to different flower diversities within outdoor flight cages. We used commercial hives to distinguish between vertically and horizontally transmitted bacteria, respectively from the nest environment or the exposed outside environment. Result: The sequential sampling of foraging workers over a period of 35 days indicated a temporal progression of the bumble bee microbiota when placed outside. The microbiota increased in diversity and changed in composition and variability over time. We observed a major increase in relative abundance of the families Lactobacillaceae, Bifidobacteriaceae and Weeksellaceae. In contrast, major core-taxa like Snodgrassella and Gilliamella declined in their relative abundance over time. The genus Lactobacillus showed a high diversity and strain specific turnover, so that only specific ASVs showed an increase over time, while others had a more erratic occurrence pattern. Exposure to different flower diversities had no significant influence on the progression of the bumble bee microbiota. Conclusion: The bumble bee microbiota showed a dynamic temporal succession with distinct compositional changes and diversification over time when placed outdoor. The exposure of bumble bees to environmental conditions, or environmental microbes, increases dissimilarity and changes the gut-community composition. Introduction: Plant residues can contribute to nutrient fertility in soil, increase soil organic matter concentration, maintain water in soil, reduce evaporation, stimulate microbial activity, increase grain size, decrease temperature fluctuations, improve the characteristics Physical, chemical and biological properties and improve soil plowing power. Crop residue burning is the factors affecting the emission of greenhouse gases and air pollutants. It is one of the fast and low-cost land preparation methods. This action causes environmental issues, as well as leads to changes in vegetation and soil. Hence, attention to this issue can be important in raising awareness and preventing the increase of its disadvantages. This research was carried out in order to estimate the area of agricultural land that post-harvest crop residue was burned, in the province of Kermanshah, Sarapul-Zahab Materials and Methods: Field sampling operations were carried out on burned and unburned fields and their geographic coordinates were recorded. As a result, 255 burned fields and 163 non-burned fields were recorded. Considering the size of the grazing area of the study area, which is often smaller than 5 hectares, in this research, the images of LANDSAT 8, OIL / TIRS sensor with 30 m spatial resolution were obtained from the studied area. After atmospheric correction by FLAASH method, for selecting the best contrast, the contrast enhancement methods of optimum index factor (OIF), Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Minimum Noise Fraction (MNF) were used. The classification of images was done using the maximum likelihood method. Results and Discussion: The results showed that the minimum values of the bands 1 and 2 were negative, so the data were normalized and the negative values of the bands was corrected. Based on the results obtained from the optimum index factor (OIF), the combination of bands 7, 5, 1 for all the examined dates, was chosen as the best band combination. After band combination based on the OIF index the burnt lands were separated by dark gray color and the vegetation of the cultivated lands were also separated by green color. The city and water could also be recognized in this image. The results of PCA and MNF Contrast enhancement methods also showed that the use of these methods, like the OIF band combination method, leads to a good enhancement of ground features in the images. After applying the maximum likelihood method to objects classification, The accuracy of the classification was evaluated by checking the correlation between the observed values (burnt and unburnt fields) and the classified values (burnt and unburnt places resulting from the image classification process). The methods of OIF and MNF (coefficients of Phi= 0.80, Cramer's V= 0.80 and Contingency Coefficient = 0.62) had significant correlations and more accurate than the PCA method (coefficients of Phi= 0.68, Cramer's V= 0.68 and Contingency Coefficient = 0.56). Accordingly, the area of irrigated agricultural field which burned after harvest was estimated at 7380 hectares, which included 56 percent of the County's total irrigated field. Conclusion: Based on the obtained results, the use of LANDSAT 8 satellite images can be used with high accuracy to identify burnt lands using enhancement methods OIF and MNF. A high percentage of irrigated lands in Sarpol Zahab city were burned in late spring and early summer for the next cultivation land preparation. In the long term, this can endanger the stability of production in agricultural ecosystems and also cause the release of greenhouse gases and various pollutants into the atmosphere, which in turn can cause air pollution and increase health problems for the inhabitants, which requires more attention of managers in this regard. The European Commission requested the EFSA Panel on Plant Health to prepare and deliver risk assessments for commodities listed in Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/2019 as 'High risk plants, plant products and other objects'. This Scientific Opinion covers plant health risks posed by plants of the evergreen Ligustrum ovalifolium and the semi‐evergreen Ligustrum vulgare imported from the United Kingdom (UK) as: (a) bare root plants and (b) plants in pots, taking into account the available scientific information, including the technical information provided by the UK. The category (a) 'bare root plants' includes bundles of 1‐ to 3‐year‐old bare root whips or transplants and single 1‐ to 7‐year‐old bare root plants. The category (b) 'plants in pots' includes bundles of 1‐ to 2‐year‐old cell grown plants (only L. vulgare) and 1‐ to 5‐year‐old plants in pots. All pests associated with the commodities were evaluated against specific criteria for their relevance for this opinion. Two EU quarantine pests, Bemisia tabaci and Scirtothrips dorsalis, and one pest not regulated in the EU, Diaprepes abbreviatus, fulfilled all relevant criteria and were selected for further evaluation. For the selected pests, the risk mitigation measures proposed in the technical dossier from the UK were evaluated taking into account the possible limiting factors. For these pests, an expert judgement is given on the likelihood of pest freedom considering the risk mitigation measures acting on the pest, including uncertainties associated with the assessment. In the assessment of risk, the age of the plants was considered, reasoning that older trees are more likely to be infested mainly due to longer exposure time and larger size. The degree of pest freedom varies among the pests evaluated, with B. tabaci being the pest most frequently expected on the imported plants. Pepper leaf curl virus (PepLCV) disease spread by Begomovirus and infected by whiteflies, is the most destructive disease of pepper worldwide. The genetic basis of resistance to PepLCV was studied in F1 and F2 generations developed from Punjab Lal (P1) x Kashi Anmol (P2) and back cross population (B1 and B2) for segregation analysis following a mixed inheritance model. Analysis of the segregation data revealed that PepLCV resistance in Punjab Lal is controlled by pooled additive genes and additive × additive polygenes. Whereas, the F2 Mendelian population was segregated into 1:3 genetic ratio and showed monogenic recessive gene action. A total of 132 F2:3 families were evaluated for PepLCV resistance in two separate trials identified eight QTLs on five linkage groups (LG1, LG3, LG5, LG7 and LG8). Out of eight QTLs, six were stable in both the trials except QPlcv.teri.1.1 and QPlcv.teri.8.4. The six QTLs identified in both seasons together explained 69.36% (F3/1st trial) and 58.69% (F3/2nd trial) of the total phenotypic variation. Three major QTLs were observed on LG8 QPlcv.teri.8.1, QPlcv.teri.8.2 and QPlcv.teri.8.3 explained 7.82, 34.23 and 14.27 in F3/1st trial whereas 5.86, 28.99 and 12.02 in F3/2nd trial, respectively. Whiteflies cause significant crop losses through direct sap feeding, inducing plant physiological disorders and promoting the growth of sooty mold. Moreover, whiteflies can indirectly harm plants by transmitting plant viruses, particularly begomoviruses and criniviruses, resulting in severe viral disease epidemics. This study aimed to evaluate the physiological characteristics of susceptible and resistant soybean cultivars to B. tabaci. The experiments were conducted in a greenhouse. Eleven soybean cultivars were selected and infested with 100 adults of B. tabaci at the V3 stage. The evaluation of photosynthetic parameters, such as photosynthetic rate, leaf transpiration, stomatal conductance, and internal CO2 concentration, revealed that B. tabaci infestation influenced gas exchange in soybean plants. The photosynthetic rate was higher in cultivars AS3810 and M8349 during the V6 stage. Infestations caused alterations in photosynthetic parameters, suggesting increased energy demand to maintain photosynthetic activity. However, the response to infestation varied among the different cultivars, indicating varying levels of resistance and tolerance to the whitefly's damage. Furthermore, the infestation had a more notable impact during the vegetative phenological stage. In summary, infestation by B. tabaci has a discernible impact on the physiology of soybean plants, resulting in alterations in gas exchange parameters and water use efficiency. The reaction to infestation exhibited variations among different soybean cultivars, indicating potential differences in resistance to the pest. The Middle East Asia Minor 1 biotype of Bemisia tabaci Gennadius (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) is a greenhouse and field crop pest of global significance. The objective of this study was to assess the potential of the generalist predatory thrips, Franklinothrips vespiformis Crawford (Thysanoptera: Aeolothripidae), as a biological control agent for B. tabaci. This was achieved by determining the functional responses of F. vespiformis larvae and adults to the egg and nymphal stages of B. tabaci under laboratory conditions. Analyses consisted of 10 replicates of each predator and prey stage combination on bean leaf discs for a 24-h period. Following logistic regression analyses to determine the functional response type exhibited, response parameters were estimated with nonlinear least squares regression using Roger's equation. Results showed that F. vespiformis larvae and adults exhibited a Type II functional response when feeding on immature B. tabaci. The handling times (T h ) of F. vespiformis larvae and adults were magnitudes higher for B. tabaci nymphs than they were for eggs, which were in part driven by the higher attack rates (a) observed on eggs. The maximum attack rate (T / T h ) for B. tabaci eggs and nymphs exhibited by first-stage larvae, second-stage larvae, and adult F. vespiformis increased with increasing predator age. Results from this study suggest that F. vespiformis larvae and particularly adults are promising biological control agents for B. tabaci and are efficient predators at both low and high prey densities. Sympathetic innervation plays a crucial role in maintaining energy balance and contributes to metabolic pathophysiology. Recent evidence has begun to uncover the innervation landscape of sympathetic projections and sheds light on their important functions in metabolic activities. Additionally, the immune system has long been studied for its essential roles in metabolic health and diseases. In this review, the aim is to provide an overview of the current research progress on the sympathetic regulation of key metabolic organs, including the pancreas, liver, intestine, and adipose tissues. In particular, efforts are made to highlight the critical roles of the peripheral nervous system and its potential interplay with immune components. Overall, it is hoped to underscore the importance of studying metabolic organs from a comprehensive and interconnected perspective, which will provide valuable insights into the complex mechanisms underlying metabolic regulation and may lead to novel therapeutic strategies for metabolic diseases. In this paper, a linear matrix inequality (LMI)-based robust model predictive speed control (RMPSC) with a disturbance observer (DOB) is proposed to guarantee stability and control performance against the parameter uncertainty and disturbance of a permanent magnetic synchronous motor (PMSM). All external torques applied to the PMSM are defined as disturbance, estimated by the DOB, and used to construct the RMPSC method. The proposed DOB and RMPSC are determined by a multiple LMI-based optimization approach. Furthermore, parameter uncertainty within a certain range, due to manufacturing errors or aging deterioration, is considered and a systematic tuning method is proposed to obtain the optimal gains. Finally, an offline optimization method is developed that ensures a low computational load to enable real-time processing. The highway cycle is an important consideration in the EV's new European driving cycles (NEDCs) range, as the steady-state efficiency improvement in such conditions can be greatly beneficial. In the model predictive control (MPC) of the permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), the predicted next-step feedback reference generated by the equivalent circuit model (ECM) will contribute directly to the voltage vector selection, therefore influencing the performance of the motor control. In the current MPC scheme, when the conventional ECM is applied, it only considers copper loss, and the core loss is usually disregarded. In some circumstances, such as the highway cycle of EVs, the motors are at high speed, the torque is low, and the core loss can be significant in the losses, thus affecting the accuracy of control and the efficiency of the system; hence, the introduction of core loss ECM into the MPC would be beneficial. This paper aims to investigate the steady-state efficiency improvement of a novel ECM of PMSM considering core loss ECM, and the comparison will be based on model predictive direct torque control (MPDTC) using the core loss ECM, which will be compared to MPDTC with the conventional ECM of the PMSM. The results demonstrate the proposed ECM's efficiency improvement in various conditions, the limitations of the model and the simulation are discussed, and future work is proposed. A new analytic model for calculating of the air‐gap flux density (AGFD) of surface‐mounted permanent magnet synchronous machines (SMPMSMs) is presented. This proposed model is capable to taking into account the effects of magnetic saturation, armature reaction and stator slots opening. Furthermore, the real form of air‐gap distribution and spatial distribution of flux density of the PM poles are considered. The armature reaction effect is modeled using phasor diagram analysis of the motor as a function of the load torque, the armature current amplitude, power factor and the inverse air gap length. Also, saturation phenomenon predicted using the new non‐linear proposed function in connection with the armature reaction effects and the properties of the lamination material. It is shown that the proposed model capable to predicting acceptably the air gap flux density waveform of the SMPMSMs at lagging and leading power factors and with the load torque variation. The invasive whitefly species, Rugose Spiralling Whitefly (RSW) and Bondar's Nesting Whitefly (BNW) in coconut were reported in 2016 at Pollachi, Tamil Nadu, India and in 2019 in Kerala, India, respectively. Among the natural enemies of whiteflies, Apertochrysa astur (Banks) is predominant in coconut ecosystem. Morphology, biology, and predatory potential of A. astur have been studied. The duration of first, second, and third instar grubs of A. astur was 3.65 ± 0.109, 5.4 ± 0.184, and 6.15 ± 0.167 days when provided with RSW. Likewise, the duration of first, second, and third instar grubs of A. astur when fed with BNW averaged 3.8 ± 0.172, 6.0 ± 0.145, and 6.8 ± 0.225 days, respectively. In a laboratory experiment on the predatory potential, a third instar grub of A. astur devoured a maximum of 313 and 333 second instar nymphs of RSW and BNW, respectively. The grubs of A. astur were observed to be extremely efficient in terms of predatory potential with respect to A. rugioperculatus and P. bondari. The results supported that A. astur can be employed as an efficient biological control agent for the invasive whitefly species in the coconut ecosystem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Capsicum (Solanaceae) includes peppers and chilies. Phytophthora capsici (Peronosporaceae) and Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) are two relevant problems in the production of this genus. Among the sustainable alternatives for disease and pest control, plant resistance and biological control stand out. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the resistance of Capsicum genotypes to damage by P. capsici and infestation by B. tabaci, as well as to diagnose whether the action of predators and parasitoids against B. tabaci could complement the resistance of the plants. The progression of disease caused by P. capsici and infestation by B. tabaci was estimated in 23 Capsicum genotypes, corresponding to the species: Capsicum annuum, Capsicum baccatum, Capsicum chinense, Capsicum frutescens and Capsicum. pubescens, from the GenBank of the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIAP-Ecuador). Three genotypes: ECU-11993 (C. baccatum), ECU-11991 and ECU-2244 (C. pubescens) showed high susceptibility to both P. capsici damage and B. tabaci infestation. C. baccatum, C. chinense and C. frutescens genotypes showed the highest resistance to both pests, suggesting multiple resistance. Six taxa of predators and parasitoids reduced B. tabaci populations that developed in the most infested genotypes. Simple Summary: In this study, we investigated the efficacy of nano-formulated conventional insecticides with attractive toxic sugar baits (N-ATSB) in comparison to their traditional counterparts, commonly used for both agricultural pest and mosquito control, and also observed the non-target effect on Coccinella septempunctata. Ten conventional insecticides were employed, administered both in traditional form and as nano-particles with ATSB. The study focused on mosquito strain Anopheles gambiae collected from various crop fields, testing mortality rates through adult bioassays at 36 and 72 h. Notably, the slow response of certain insecticides resulted in higher mortality after 72 h. Significant differences in mosquito mortality were observed among all tested insecticides, particularly with high (1%) and low (0.5%) doses of both traditional and nano-formulated versions. Applying ATSB solution with each insecticide showcased a marked impact on mosquito mortality. The results revealed variations in efficacy among different insecticides, with carbosulfan (nano-formulation) demonstrating the highest toxicity, recording 98% mortality. The nano-formulated conventional insecticides showed no adverse effects on the ladybird beetle compared to their commercial counterparts. This study provides valuable insights to improve mosquito control strategies while reducing the impact on non-target organisms. It highlights the potential of N-ATSB in enhancing the effectiveness of insecticides against disease vectors. This study investigated the efficacy of nano-formulated insecticide-based sugar baits in controlling Anopheles gambiae populations and assessed their potential non-target impact on Coccinella septempunctata. This laboratory-based study employed thiolated polymer-coated attractive toxic sugar bait (ATSB) nano-formulations, delivering pesticides via nano-carriers. Adult and larvae populations of insects were collected from rice and cotton fields subjected to bioassays with 0.5% and 1% concentrations of each nano-formulated and conventional insecticide within ATSB solution, alongside a control 100% attractive sugar bait (ASB). Mosquitoes interacted overnight with insecticide-treated baits, and mortality was assessed. Further observations up to 72 h were conducted for potential delayed toxic effects. Results highlighted nano-ATSB carbosulfan's effectiveness, particularly among organophosphates and pyrethroids. Among pyrethroids, nano-ATSB cypermethrin exhibited high efficacy, while Deltamethrin displayed lower mortality. Among organophosphates, nano-ATSB chlorpyrifos induced substantial mortality. The nano-formulations of insecticide were harmless against C. septempunctata compared to their conventional form. Nano-formulations demonstrated enhanced mortality rates and prolonged efficacy against mosquitoes, having a benign impact on non-target beetles. Simple Summary: Garden plants provide habitat for pests as well as the predatory insects that eat them. In rural agriculture, structurally complex vegetation that includes diverse plant species can help attract predators and enhance pest control, while dense plantings of a single plant species are often associated with pest outbreaks. However, the vegetation composition that best supports predators and pest control in urban agriculture is not yet fully understood. In this study, we measured vegetation cover, diversity, and connectivity (distance between plants) in community garden plots to better understand how vegetation complexity influences the abundance and diversity of pest and predator species and pest control. Gardens with more vegetation cover had the most abundant and diverse predators, while gardens with more diverse vegetation had fewer predators. Further, gardens with abundant predators had higher pest control, whereas gardens with more predator species had lower pest control, possibly due to antagonistic interactions between competing predator species. Our results suggest that gardens with high vegetation cover can help support more predators, which can promote higher pest control. However, pest control benefits may be limited in gardens with diverse and antagonistic predator communities. In urban community gardens, cultivated vegetation provides variable levels of habitat complexity, which can suppress pests by promoting predator diversity and improving pest control. In this study, we examine three components of the structural complexity of garden vegetation (cover, diversity, and connectivity) to investigate whether higher garden vegetation complexity leads to fewer herbivores, more predators, and higher predation. We worked in eight community gardens where we quantified vegetation complexity, sampled the arthropod community, and measured predation on corn earworm eggs. We found that plots with high vegetation cover supported higher species richness and greater abundance of predatory insects. High vegetation cover also supported a greater abundance and species richness of spiders. In contrast, high vegetation diversity was negatively associated with predator abundance. While high predator abundance was positively associated with egg predation, greater predator species richness had a negative impact on egg predation, suggesting that antagonism between predators may limit biological control. Community gardeners may thus manipulate vegetation cover and diversity to promote higher predator abundance and diversity in their plots. However, the species composition of predators and the prevalence of interspecific antagonism may ultimately determine subsequent impacts on biological pest control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fractional slot concentrated winding (FSCW) permanent magnet (PM) machines are gaining more attention for low‐speed applications because of their great advantages. This paper proposes a new structure for an FSCW double rotor axial flux PM synchronous machine (DRAFPMSM) with counter‐rotating rotors. In addition, an analytical formula for the Back EMF waveform of the proposed structure is presented. The accuracy of the formula is investigated by designing a 40 W sample machine. The rotors of this machine rotate with speeds of 600 and 428 rpm in opposite directions. The Back EMF of the sample machine is calculated using the suggested formula. In addition, the finite element method (FEM) is used to determine the Back EMF waveform. Comparison of the obtained results confirms that the new formula yields the Back EMF precisely such that the results well match to those of FEM. The effect of the relative position of two rotors on the Back EMF waveform is investigated using the proposed formula. In addition, the optimum relative position of two rotors for minimizing the Back EMF THD of the case study machine is determined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
