Leguminous shade trees are ubiquitous parts of tea plantations of the Terai region. However, their shed leaves might have an effect on the soil microflora under those shade trees, so it is important to find out how leaf litter affect the soil microflora. Isolation of soil microbial consortia followed by downstream experiments were conducted to observe the tolerance/susceptible pattern of those soil microflora against the fallen leaves. Sample from under Albizia odoratissima has higher organic carbon, organic matter and nitrogen content but the same property was found to be low in the sample collected under Melia azedarach. Isolation of consortia was done on nutrient agar. In vitro tolerance assay was conducted to find out the tolerance pattern against leaf extracts, heavy metal salts, pesticides, antibiotics and antifungals. Heavy metals salts like Arsenic trioxide (AS2O3) and Cupric chloride (CuCl2); and pesticides like Thiamethoxam; Spiromesifen; Phorate etc. showed no inhibition against all the isolated consortia. Co-Trimoxazole and Augmentin have not showed any inhibition except consortia under Derris robusta, whereas no antifungals but Itraconazole had an impact over all the consortia. Shade trees, being a crucial member of the tea plantations, cannot be removed but replacement of these with other species could be a probable option, besides this limited use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers should be taken into consideration strictly to restrain the microbial population in tea garden soil. Background: The tea plant, Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze, is an evergreen leafy plant whose tender leaves are used in the manufacturing of the world's second most consumed beverage—tea. The production and consumption of tea worldwide have continually increased over the decades. All parts of the plant—leaf, stem, root, flower and seed, are fed upon by insect pests. This study elucidates the metabolomic changes occurring in tea leaves in response to infestation by two major pests in tea gardens: red spider mites and tea mosquito bugs. These pests significantly impact both the quantity and quality of tea production. The secondary metabolites produced by the tea due to pest attack has been analysed using GC–MS analysis in the laboratory. Results: Mostly fatty acid derivatives were biosynthesized as secondary metabolites due to pest attack as revealed from the result. In both infestations, methyl stearate was found to be produced along with increased chromatographic peaks of compounds such as caffeine, methyl palmitate, methyl linoleate, and stigmasta-7,25-dien-3-ol. In comparison with respective control samples (leaf with no pest attack), the one attacked by red spider mite showed eighteen exclusive metabolites, whereas tea mosquito bug infested leaf showed six such exclusive metabolites. Conclusions: Some metabolites were found to be either increased or decreased in their amount in both the samples. The increased compounds were reported with insecticidal and pesticidal properties with respect to respective controls. Some metabolites were markers of pest attacks i.e. plant defense mechanism induced phytochemicals according to the literature as discussed in this research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ferroptosis has been characterized as a form of iron-dependent regulated cell death accompanied by an accumulation of reactive oxygen species and lipid oxidation products along with typical morphological alterations in mitochondria. Ferroptosis is activated by diverse triggers and inhibited by ferrostatin-1 and liproxstatin-1, apart from iron chelators and several antioxidants, and the process is implicated in multiple pathological conditions. There are, however, certain ambiguities about ferroptosis, especially regarding the final executioner of cell death subsequent to the accumulation of ROS. This study uses a typical inducer of ferroptosis such as erastin on SH-SY5Y cells, and shows clearly that ferroptotic death of cells is accompanied by the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and intracellular ATP content along with an accumulation of oxidative stress markers. All these are prevented by ferrostatin-1 and liproxstatin-1. Additionally, cyclosporine A prevents mitochondrial alterations and cell death induced by erastin implying the crucial role of mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) activation in ferroptotic death. Furthermore, an accumulation of α-synuclein occurs during erastin induced ferroptosis which can be inhibited by ferrostatin-1 and liproxstatin-1. When the knock-down of α-synuclein expression is performed by specific siRNA treatment of SH-SY5Y cells, the mitochondrial impairment and ferroptotic death of the cells induced by erastin are markedly prevented. Thus, α-synuclein through the involvement of mPTP appears to be the key executioner protein of ferroptosis induced by erastin, but it needs to be verified if it is a generalized mechanism of ferroptosis by using other inducers and cell lines. • Proposed strategy is to vary the daily SOC reference level of a centralized battery in a microgrid to follow seasonal variation that is exhibited in solar PV output power. Thereby it reduces the required capacity of the battery at modest degradation rate. • The SOC level of the centralized battery is corrected to its reference value at the end of each day and during 'SOC restoration period' where grid interconnection line is at a low loading. • A rule-based strategy is used to control the magnitude and ramp rate of power flows in the grid interconnection link. This is achieved by the flexible control of the charging-discharge of the centralized battery. • The proposed control strategy has resulted in minimum battery capacity and also at the lowest SEI growth rate of the battery. Hence the life period of the battery is expected to increase. • The work is based on the real-time solar PV data measured at a high-frequency sampling rate in the authors' laboratory. Such data of over several years for the analysis and design of the microgrid-centralized battery is rare to find in the public domain. The focus of this paper is to develop a control strategy for a community battery bank in a grid-connected microgrid in which a significant level of photovoltaic generation is embedded. In order to minimize the capacity of the community battery, the power transfer capacity of the interconnection link between the microgrid and the external grid system is utilized to safe maximum levels. Through Empirical Mode Decomposition analysis of the net power flows of the microgrid, the daily and seasonal modes of the net power oscillations are identified as the two dominant low-frequency components. Whence a rule-based operational strategy is developed to control the power flows of the community battery via a novel dynamic referencing scheme for the state-of-charge of the battery bank. The battery control scheme counteracts the dominant daily and seasonal modes of oscillations of the net power. The numerical calculations performed for a case study shows that the proposed scheme leads to an approximately 16% decrease in the required battery capacity for particular growth rate of solid-electrolyte interphase film in the battery bank. The scheme does not require the forecasting of the net power, and thus, it has an increased degree of robustness when the community battery undertakes the power buffering task. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
