The phosphorus (P) concentration is increasing in parts of the Baltic Sea following the spring bloom. The fate of this excess P-pool is an open question, and here we investigate the role of microbial degradation processes in the excess P assimilation phase. During a 17-day-long mesocosm experiment in the southwest Finnish archipelago, we examined nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon acquiring extracellular enzyme activities in three size fractions (<0.2, 0.2–3, and >3 µm), bacterial abundance, production, community composition, and its predicted metabolic functions. The mesocosms received carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) amendments individually and in combination (NC) to distinguish between heterotrophic and autotrophic processes. Alkaline phosphatase activity occurred mainly in the dissolved form and likely contributed to the excess phosphate conditions together with grazing. At the beginning of the experiment, peptidolytic and glycolytic enzymes were mostly produced by free-living bacteria. However, by the end of the experiment, the NC-treatment induced a shift in peptidolytic and glycolytic activities and degradation of phosphomonoesters toward the particle-associated fraction, likely as a consequence of higher substrate availability. This would potentially promote retention of nutrients in the surface as opposed to sedimentation, but direct sedimentation measurements are needed to verify this hypothesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In terms of lifestyle, bacterioplankton can be classified as free-living (FL) and particle-attached (PA) forms, and both play essential roles in biogeochemical cycling in aquatic ecosystems. Structure, distribution, and community assembly of FL and PA bacteria in plateau riverine waterbodies are largely unknown. Therefore, we explored the seasonal dynamics of FLand PA bacterial communities in the Wujiangdu reservoir, Yungui Plateau using 16S rRNA gene highthroughput sequencing. Results revealed there was a significant environmental heterogeneity in Wujiangdu reservoir seasonally. The dominant phylum was Actinomycetota for FL and Pseudomonadota for PA bacteria. Species richness and diversity was higher in autumn and winter compared to spring and summer. In general, PA diversity was greater than FL, but with some temporal variations. Species turnover was the major contributor to β-diversity of both FL and PA lifestyles, and significant differences were noticed between FL and PA bacterial community composition. Distinct co-occurrence network patterns implied that more connections exist between FL bacteria, while more complex PA networks were in parallel to their greater diversity and stronger interactions in biofilms on particles. Dispersal limitation was the major driving force for both FL and PA bacterial community assembly. Deterministic processes were of relatively low importance, with homogeneous selection for FL and heterogeneous selection for PA bacteria. Temperature was the most important environmental driver of seasonal bacterial dynamics, followed by nitrate for FL and Secchi depth for PA bacteria. This study allows for a better understanding of the temporal variability of different bacteria lifestyles in reservoirs in the vulnerable and rapidly changing plateau environment, facilitating further microbial research related to global warming and eutrophication. Iron (Fe) plays an important role in the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nutrients in aquatic systems. Reactive Fe phases can interact with organic carbon and facilitate the removal of carbon from the biogeochemical cycle; however, this important ecosystem function is often strongly controlled by Fe availability. Due to pollution from lignite mining in the Lusatian province in Northeast Germany, large amounts of iron and sulfate are released into the fluvial-lacustrine system of the Spree River. It was hypothesized that the input of freshly precipitated iron oxyhydroxides from mining areas (e.g., ferrihydrite) alter the biodegradation of particulate organic matter (POM) in downstream lacustrine sediments. To investigate the Fe-dependent degradation of POM, slurries mimicking iron-polluted sediments (85 mg Fe per g, 116 mg Fe per g, and 149 mg Fe per g dry weight) were incubated with plankton or leaf POM under anoxic and oxic headspace conditions, and CO2 and CH4 emissions, water chemistry, and stable isotopes of dissolved inorganic carbon were measured. The experiments revealed that (i) with an increasing Fe content, the CO2 and CH4 emissions were gradually reduced, (ii) CO2 and CH4 production was higher during plankton degradation than during leaf decomposition, and (iii) under oxic conditions, CO2 production was higher and CH4 production was lower when compared to the treatments under anoxic conditions. These findings demonstrate that while benthic mineralization of fresh POM typically releases greenhouse gases into the water column, the availability of iron oxyhydroxides can contribute to reduced greenhouse gas emissions from sediments. The isotopic ratio 18O/16O of dissolved O2 in aquatic systems is affected by the preferential biological uptake of 16O (ε). Studies over the past six decades reveal that during incubation experiments, the isotopic effect of microorganism respiration (εorganism) varies in the range of −18‰ to −22‰. In contrast, natural variations in the deep‐ocean O2 concentration and δ18O levels show a considerably weaker effect (~ −10‰). The differences between these observations have been explained to result from either O2 uptake by sediments or organic particles that, due to diffusion‐limited respiration, are expected to weakly fractionate oxygen isotopes, by mixing processes or by weak fractionation at low temperatures. To gain better insight, we studied oxygen demand and δ18O in the deep, cold hypolimnion of Lake Stechlin between 2018 and 2021 as well as in various laboratory incubations. Our incubation results demonstrate an εorganism of about −24‰. Simple model calculations demonstrate a sediment O2 demand isotope effect (εSOD) of about −8.4‰, and a variated water‐column O2 demand isotope effect (εWOD) which is lower than εorganism, ranging from −13.9‰ in 2019 to −23‰ in 2021. Accompanying experiments indicate that the lower magnitude of εWOD may be related to respiration at organic particles lending to a weaker fractionation effect. Thus, variations in εWOD may reflect a changing partitioning of hypolimnion oxygen uptake between suspended particles and their containing microorganisms. The world's 1.4 million lakes (≥10 ha) provide many ecosystem services that are essential for human well‐being; however, only if their health status is good. Here, we reviewed common lake health issues and classified them using a simple human health‐based approach to outline that lakes are living systems that are in need of oxygen, clean water and a balanced energy and nutrient supply. The main reason for adopting some of the human health terminology for the lake health classification is to increase the awareness and understanding of global lake health issues. We show that lakes are exposed to various anthropogenic stressors which can result in many lake health issues, ranging from thermal, circulatory, respiratory, nutritional and metabolic issues to infections and poisoning. Of particular concern for human well‐being is the widespread lake drying, which is a severe circulatory issue with many cascading effects on lake health. We estimated that ∼115,000 lakes evaporate twice as much water as they gain from direct precipitation, making them vulnerable to potential drying if inflowing waters follow the drying trend, putting more than 153 million people at risk who live in close vicinity to those lakes. Where lake health issues remain untreated, essential ecosystem services will decline or even vanish, posing a threat to the well‐being of millions of people. We recommend coordinated multisectoral and multidisciplinary prevention and treatment strategies, which need to include a follow‐up of the progress and an assessment of the resilience of lakes to intensifying threats. Priority should be given to implementing sewage water treatment, mitigating climate change, counteracting introductions of non‐native species to lakes and decreasing uncontrolled anthropogenic releases of chemicals into the hydro‐, bio‐, and atmosphere. Plain Language Summary: Lakes around the world come in an array of sizes, shapes and colors, each telling a unique story of geological history and environmental importance. When lakes are healthy they contribute to the achievement of the global sustainable development goals by providing many important ecosystem services. Lakes are, however, not always healthy. Here, it is shown that lakes can suffer from a large variety of health issues, ranging from thermal, circulatory, respiratory, nutritional and metabolic issues to infections and poisoning. Without improved treatment strategies, many of the health issues may become chronic, affecting millions of people who are dependent on the ecosystem services from the lakes. To prevent and cure lakes from critical health conditions, strategies that are similar to those used in human healthcare should be applied: intervention and preventative actions before health problems occur, regular screening and early identification of lake health issues, and remediation and mitigation efforts at an appropriate scale, spanning from local to global. Although scientific research has identified the causes of undesirable ecological changes in fresh waters, translating the results of research into practical conservation and management, and raising awareness of the need for action, is often inadequate.This Viewpoint considers the present coverage of conservation‐related freshwater research, the application of science to conservation, the extent of collaboration between international organizations, and the level of awareness of freshwater ecosystems and the need for their conservation.Far greater attention has been given to conservation in marine than freshwater areas. This is illustrated by the respective number of publications in the scientific literature, an imbalance in the UN Sustainable Development goals, and, until recently, the lack of an explicit reference to freshwater ecosystems in the UN Global Biodiversity Framework.Four case studies are presented as examples of how freshwater conservation can be made more effective: involving local communities in applying nature‐based solutions; bringing scientists and stakeholders together to discuss how to improve freshwater management; collaborating at a global scale in freshwater protection and restoration; and demonstrating how scientists and government can work together to reconcile the competing needs of nature and human society.Producing and implementing effective conservation and management plans needs a recognition of the extensive diversity of freshwater habitats and species, as well as a systematic evaluation of how scientific information can be translated into action at local, regional and global scales.Data on freshwater ecosystems need to be accessible, comprehensible, unambiguous and available to all those working on practical conservation projects. Permafrost, a vast storage reservoir of frozen organic matter, is rapidly thawing due to climate change, releasing previously preserved carbon into the environment. This phenomenon has significant consequences for microbial communities, including fungi, inhabiting permafrost-associated regions. In this review, we delve into the intricate interplay between permafrost thawing and fungal diversity and functionality with an emphasis on thermokarst lakes. We explore how the release of organic carbon from thawing permafrost alters the composition and activities of fungal communities, emphasizing the potential for shifts in taxonomic diversity and functional gene expression. We discuss the formation of thermokarst lakes, as an example of permafrost thaw-induced ecological disruptions and their impact on fungal communities. Furthermore, we analyze the repercussions of these changes, including effects on nutrient cycling, plant productivity, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. By elucidating the multifaceted relationship between permafrost thaw and aquatic fungi, this review provides valuable insights into the ecological consequences of ongoing climate change in permafrost-affected regions. Declining oxygen concentrations in the deep waters of lakes worldwide pose a pressing environmental and societal challenge. Existing theory suggests that low deep‐water dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations could trigger a positive feedback through which anoxia (i.e., very low DO) during a given summer begets increasingly severe occurrences of anoxia in following summers. Specifically, anoxic conditions can promote nutrient release from sediments, thereby stimulating phytoplankton growth, and subsequent phytoplankton decomposition can fuel heterotrophic respiration, resulting in increased spatial extent and duration of anoxia. However, while the individual relationships in this feedback are well established, to our knowledge, there has not been a systematic analysis within or across lakes that simultaneously demonstrates all of the mechanisms necessary to produce a positive feedback that reinforces anoxia. Here, we compiled data from 656 widespread temperate lakes and reservoirs to analyze the proposed anoxia begets anoxia feedback. Lakes in the dataset span a broad range of surface area (1–126,909 ha), maximum depth (6–370 m), and morphometry, with a median time‐series duration of 30 years at each lake. Using linear mixed models, we found support for each of the positive feedback relationships between anoxia, phosphorus concentrations, chlorophyll a concentrations, and oxygen demand across the 656‐lake dataset. Likewise, we found further support for these relationships by analyzing time‐series data from individual lakes. Our results indicate that the strength of these feedback relationships may vary with lake‐specific characteristics: For example, we found that surface phosphorus concentrations were more positively associated with chlorophyll a in high‐phosphorus lakes, and oxygen demand had a stronger influence on the extent of anoxia in deep lakes. Taken together, these results support the existence of a positive feedback that could magnify the effects of climate change and other anthropogenic pressures driving the development of anoxia in lakes around the world. The ocean–atmosphere exchange of carbon largely depends on the balance between carbon export of particulate organic carbon (POC) as sinking marine particles, and POC remineralization by attached microbial communities. Despite the vast spectrum of types, sources, ages, shapes, and composition of individual sinking particles, they are usually considered as a bulk together with their associated microbial communities. This limits our mechanistic understanding of the biological carbon pump (BCP) and its feedback on the global carbon cycle. We established a method to sample individual particles while preserving their shape, structure, and nucleic acids by placing a jellified RNA‐fixative at the bottom of drifting sediment traps. Coupling imaging of individual particles with associated 16S rRNA analysis reveals that active bacterial communities are highly heterogenous from one particles origin to another. In contrast to lab‐made particles, we found that complex in situ conditions lead to heterogeneity even within the same particle type. Our new method allows to associate patterns of active prokaryotic and functional diversity to particle features, enabling the detection of potential remineralization niches. This new approach will therefore improve our understanding of the BCP and numerical representation in the context of a rapidly changing ocean. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Succession is a fundamental aspect of ecological theory, but studies on temporal succession trajectories and ecological driving mechanisms of plastisphere microbial communities across diverse colonization environments remain scarce and poorly understood. To fill this knowledge gap, we assessed the primary colonizers, succession trajectories, assembly, and turnover mechanisms of plastisphere prokaryotes and eukaryotes from four freshwater lakes. Our results show that differences in microbial composition similarity, temporal turnover rate, and assembly processes in the plastisphere do not exclusively occur at the kingdom level (prokaryotes and eukaryotes), but also depend on environmental conditions and colonization time. Thereby, the time of plastisphere colonization has a stronger impact on community composition and assembly of prokaryotes than eukaryotes, whereas for environmental conditions, the opposite pattern holds true. Across all lakes, deterministic processes shaped the assembly of the prokaryotes, but stochastic processes influenced that of the eukaryotes. Yet, they share similar assembly processes throughout the temporal succession: species turnover over time causes the loss of any priority effect, which leads to a convergent succession of plastisphere microbial communities. The increase and loss of microbial diversity in different kingdoms during succession in the plastisphere potentially impact the stability of entire microbial communities and related biogeochemical cycles. Therefore, research needs to integrate temporal dynamics along with spatial turnovers of the plastisphere microbiome. Antibiotic resistance is an escalating global health concern, exacerbated by the pervasive presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in natural environments. The Yangtze River, the world's third-longest river, traversing areas with intense human activities, presents a unique ecosystem for studying the impact of these genes on human health. Here, we explored ARGs in the Yangtze River, examining 204 samples from six distinct habitats of approximately 6000 km of the river, including free-living and particle-associated settings, surface and bottom sediments, and surface and bottom bank soils. Employing shotgun sequencing, we generated an average of 13.69 Gb reads per sample. Our findings revealed a significantly higher abundance and diversity of ARGs in water-borne bacteria compared to other habitats. A notable pattern of resistome coalescence was observed within similar habitat types. In addition, we developed a framework for ranking the risk of ARG and a corresponding method for calculating the risk index. Applying them, we identified water-borne bacteria as the highest contributors to health risks, and noted an increase in ARG risks in particle-associated bacteria correlating with heightened anthropogenic activities. Further analysis using a weighted ARG risk index pinpointed the Chengdu-Chongqing and Yangtze River Delta urban agglomerations as regions of elevated health risk. Lakes worldwide are affected by multiple stressors, including climate change. This includes massive loading of both nutrients and humic substances to lakes during extreme weather events, which also may disrupt thermal stratification. Since multi-stressor effects vary widely in space and time, their combined ecological impacts remain difficult to predict. Therefore, we combined two consecutive large enclosure experiments with a comprehensive time-series and a broad-scale field survey to unravel the combined effects of storm-induced lake browning, nutrient enrichment and deep mixing on phytoplankton communities, focusing particularly on potentially toxic cyanobacterial blooms. The experimental results revealed that browning counteracted the stimulating effect of nutrients on phytoplankton and caused a shift from phototrophic cyanobacteria and chlorophytes to mixotrophic cryptophytes. Light limitation by browning was identified as the likely mechanism underlying this response. Deep-mixing increased microcystin concentrations in clear nutrient-enriched enclosures, caused by upwelling of a metalimnetic Planktothrix rubescens population. Monitoring data from a 25-year time-series of a eutrophic lake and from 588 northern European lakes corroborate the experimental results: Browning suppresses cyanobacteria in terms of both biovolume and proportion of the total phytoplankton biovolume. Both the experimental and observational results indicated a lower total phosphorus threshold for cyanobacterial bloom development in clearwater lakes (10-20 μg P L -1 ) than in humic lakes (20-30 μg P L -1 ).
