Non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) are a common type of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pollutant in the petrochemical industry and have attracted widespread attention because of their adverse health effects and environmental impacts. In this paper, we report a new porous slurry formed with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and iso-hexadecane to capture the low-concentration and multi-component NMHCs (mainly ethane (C2H6), propane (C3H8), and n-butane (n-C4H10)) from the oil field exhaust. The sorption capacity of C2H6 in the slurry is significantly higher than that of nitrogen (N2) and methane (CH4). Moreover, the slurry demonstrated a clear advantage for C2H6 over N2 and CH4 in competitive adsorption through the pressure-drop curves. In the NMHCs capture experiments, the C3H8 and n-C4H10 concentrations after purification can be reduced to below 100 ppm, while the C2H6 concentration can reach approximately 180 ppm. More encouragingly, in the breakthrough tests, the slurry exhibits a perfect kinetic separation selectivity for multi-component NMHCs. Furthermore, to avoid structural collapse of ZIF-8 material during long-term use in acidic and wet environments, a certain amount of 2-methylimidazole was retained in the slurry as a protective agent in the material synthesis process. In this way, the ZIF-8 materials in the slurry can retain the stable characteristic structure in an aqueous and acidic environment and keep the capture capacity for NMHCs without degradation. We believe the porous ZIF-8/iso-hexadecane slurry is a promising capture agent for low-concentration and multi-component NMHCs with strong purification capacity and stability.

Abstract Objective There is currently no widely accepted multidimensional health assessment questionnaire for individuals in the Chinese People Liberation Army (PLA). This study developed a multidimensional health survey questionnaire (Comprehensive Health Self-Assessment Questionnaire, CHSAQ) suitable for personnel in the PLA and conducted a preliminary examination of its reliability, validity, and discriminative ability. Methods After 183 items from 32 dimensions were selected to form the initial version of the CHSAQ, three groups of soldiers were selected from May 2022 to April 2023 and completed three survey rounds (with 183, 131, and 55 valid items). The items were screened based on classic test theory. After screening, the final questionnaire entries were formed, the structure of the questionnaire was explored through exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis, and its reliability, structural validity, and discriminative ability were evaluated. Results The final questionnaire consisted of 8 dimensions and 55 items on job satisfaction, anxiety and depression, daily activities, physical function, the otolaryngology system, the integumentary system, sleep disorders, and the visual system. The total cumulative variance contribution rate was 64.648% according to exploratory factor analysis. According to the confirmatory factor analysis, the normed fit index (NFI) was 0.880, and the comparison fit index (CFI) was 0.893 (close to 0.90). The Cronbach’s α coefficient of the total questionnaire was 0.970, the split half reliability coefficient was 0.937, and the retest reliability coefficient was 0.902. The results are presented as different pairwise comparisons. Conclusion Our study developed a self-report questionnaire for evaluating the comprehensive health status of personnel in the PLA in accordance with the standard procedure for questionnaire development. Our findings also showed that the CHSAQ for individuals in the PLA has good reliability and structural validity.

Ischemic stroke (IS) is one of the leading causes of death and disability. Complicated mechanisms are involved in the pathogenesis of IS. Immunomodulatory mechanisms are crucial to IS. Acupuncture is a traditional non-drug treatment that has been extensively used to treat IS. The exploration of neuroimmune modulation will broaden the understanding of the mechanisms underlying acupuncture treatment. This review summarizes the immune response of immune cells, immune cytokines, and immune organs after an IS. The immunomodulatory mechanisms of acupuncture treatment on the central nervous system and peripheral immunity, as well as the factors that influence the effects of acupuncture treatment, were summarized. We suggest prospects and future directions for research on immunomodulatory mechanisms of acupuncture treatment for IS based on current progress, and we hope that these will provide inspiration for researchers. Additionally, acupuncture has shown favorable outcomes in the treatment of immune-based nervous system diseases, generating new directions for research on possible targets and treatments for immune-based nervous system diseases.

Abstract Background The objective of this study was to examine and analyze differential methylation profiles in order to investigate the influence of hyper-methioninemia (HM) on the development of diabetic nephropathy (DN). Male Wistar rats, aged eight weeks and weighing 250–300 g, were randomly assigned into four groups: a control group (Healthy, n = 8), streptozocin-induced rats (STZ group, n = 8), HM + STZ group (n = 8), and the Tangshen Formula (TSF) treatment group (TSF group, n = 8). Blood glucose levels and other metabolic indicators were monitored before treatment and at four-week intervals until 12 weeks. Total DNA was extracted from the aforementioned groups, and DNA methylation landscapes were analyzed via reduced representative bisulfite sequencing. Results Both the STZ group and HM + STZ group exhibited increased blood glucose levels and urinary albumin/creatinine ratios in comparison with the control group. Notably, the HM + STZ group exhibited a markedly elevated urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (411.90 ± 88.86 mg/g) compared to the STZ group (238.41 ± 62.52 mg/g). TSF-treated rats demonstrated substantial reductions in both blood glucose levels and urinary albumin/creatinine ratios in comparison with the HM + STZ group. In-depth analysis of DNA methylation profiles revealed 797 genes with potential therapeutic effects related to TSF, among which approximately 2.3% had been previously reported as homologous genes. Conclusion While HM exacerbates DN through altered methylation patterns at specific CpG sites, TSF holds promise as a viable treatment for DN by restoring abnormal methylation levels. The identification of specific genes provides valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms of DN pathogenesis and offers potential therapeutic targets for further investigation.

Photocatalysis, a critical strategy for harvesting sunlight to address energy demand and environmental concerns, is underpinned by the discovery of high-performance photocatalysts, thereby how to design photocatalysts is now generating widespread interest in boosting the conversion efficiency of solar energy. In the past decade, computational technologies and theoretical simulations have led to a major leap in the development of high-throughput computational screening strategies for novel high-efficiency photocatalysts. In this viewpoint, we started with introducing the challenges of photocatalysis from the view of experimental practice, especially the inefficiency of the traditional “trial and error” method. Subsequently, a cross-sectional comparison between experimental and high-throughput computational screening for photocatalysis is presented and discussed in detail. On the basis of the current experimental progress in photocatalysis, we also exemplified the various challenges associated with high-throughput computational screening strategies. Finally, we offered a preferred high-throughput computational screening procedure for photocatalysts from an experimental practice perspective (model construction and screening, standardized experiments, assessment and revision), with the aim of a better correlation of high-throughput simulations and experimental practices, motivating to search for better descriptors.

Objective This study aimed to develop and validate robust predictive models for patients with oesophageal cancer who achieved a pathological complete response (pCR) and those who did not (non-pCR) after neoadjuvant therapy and oesophagectomy.Design Clinicopathological data of 6517 primary oesophageal cancer patients who underwent neoadjuvant therapy and oesophagectomy were obtained from the National Cancer Database for the training cohort. An independent cohort of 444 Chinese patients served as the validation set. Two distinct multivariable Cox models of overall survival (OS) were constructed for pCR and non-pCR patients, respectively, and were presented using web-based dynamic nomograms (graphical representation of predicted OS based on the clinical characteristics that a patient could input into the website). The calibration plot, concordance index and decision curve analysis were employed to assess calibration, discrimination and clinical usefulness of the predictive models.Results In total, 13 and 15 variables were used to predict OS for pCR and non-pCR patients undergoing neoadjuvant therapy followed by oesophagectomy, respectively. Key predictors included demographic characteristics, pretreatment clinical stage, surgical approach, pathological information and postoperative treatments. The predictive models for pCR and non-pCR patients demonstrated good calibration and clinical utility, with acceptable discrimination that surpassed that of the current tumour, node, metastases staging system.Conclusions The web-based dynamic nomograms for pCR (https://predict-survival.shinyapps.io/pCR-eso/) and non-pCR patients (https://predict-survival.shinyapps.io/non-pCR-eso/) developed in this study can facilitate the calculation of OS probability for individual patients undergoing neoadjuvant therapy and radical oesophagectomy, aiding clinicians and patients in making personalised treatment decisions.

Study region: Three subbasins with different karstification degrees in Southwest China. Study focus: To investigate the mechanism of karst influence on drought propagation, this paper used a daily-scale threshold level method to identify drought events and comparatively analyzed the differences in drought propagation characteristics among three subbasins. New hydrological insights for the region: (i) The karstification degree is appreciably correlated with the drought propagation from meteorological to hydrological droughts, and the stronger the karstification, the closer the relationship. (ii) Daily-scale drought events performed better in identifying drought characteristics; of all drought events, 55% were meteorological and 24% were hydrological and lasted

The inhibition of the immune response in the tumor microenvironment by therapy regimens can impede the eradication of tumors, potentially resulting in tumor metastasis. As a non-invasive therapeutic method, radiotherapy is utilized for tumor ablation. In this study, we aimed to improve the therapeutic impact of radiotherapy and trigger an immune response by formulating a benzothiazole sulfinate (BTS)-loaded fusion liposome (BFL) nanoplatform, which was then combined with radiotherapy for anti-cancer treatment. The platelet cell membrane, equipped with distinctive surface receptors, enables BFL to effectively target tumors while evading the immune system and adhering to tumor cells. This facilitates BFL’s engulfment by cancer cells, subsequently releasing BTS within them. Following the release, the BTS produces sulfur dioxide (SO2) for gas therapy, initiating the oxidation of intracellular glutathione (GSH). This process demonstrates efficacy in repairing damage post-radiotherapy, thereby achieving effective radiosensitization. It was revealed that an immune response was triggered following the enhanced radiosensitization facilitated by BFL. This approach facilitated the maturation of dendritic cell (DC) within lymph nodes, leading to an increase in the proportion of T cells in distant tumors. This resulted in significant eradication of primary tumors and inhibition of growth in distant tumors. In summary, the integration of personalized BFL with radiotherapy shows potential in enhancing both tumor immune response and the elimination of tumors, including metastasis.

Weeds compete with rice for sunlight and nutrients and are prone to harboring pathogens, leading to reduced rice yields. Addressing the issues of low weeding efficiency and weed mortality rates in existing inter-row weeding devices, the study proposes the design of a combination paddy field inter-row weeding wheel. The device’s operation process is theoretically analyzed based on the weed control requirements in the northeastern region of China, leading to the determination of specific structural parameters. This research conducted experiments on the mechanical properties of weed cutting to obtain geometric parameters for paddy field weeds. It was found that the range for the cutting gap of the dynamic–fixed blade is between 0.6 mm to 1.4 mm and the cutting angle is between 5° to 15°, resulting in the lowest peak cutting force for weeds. Using LS-DYNA R12.0.0 dynamic simulation software, a fluid–structure interaction (FSI) model of the weeding wheel–water–soil system was established. By employing the central composite experimental design principle and considering the soil stir rate and coupling stress as indicators, the optimal structural parameter combination for the device is obtained: a dynamic–fixed blade cutting gap of 1.4 mm, a cutting angle of 10.95°, and a dynamic blade install angle of −3.44°. Field experiments demonstrated that the device achieved an average weeding rate of 89.7% and an average seedling damage rate of 1.9%, indicating excellent performance. This study contributes to improving weed mortality rates and provides valuable guidance for inter-row mechanical weeding technology.

Perinatal and neonatal ischemic stroke is a significant cause of cognitive and behavioral impairments. Further research is needed to support models of neonatal ischemic stroke and advance our understanding of the mechanisms of infarction formation following such strokes. We used two different levels of photothrombotic stroke (PTS) models to assess stroke outcomes in neonatal mice. We measured brain damage, dynamic changes in glial cells, and neuronal expression at various time points within two weeks following ischemic injury. Our results from 2,3,5-Triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining and immunofluorescence staining showed that in the severe group, a dense border of astrocytes and microglia was observed within 3 days post infarct. This ultimately resulted in the formation of a permanent cortical cavity, accompanied by neuronal loss in the surrounding tissues. In the mild group, a relatively sparse arrangement of glial borders was observed 7 days post infarct. This was accompanied by intact cortical tissue and the restoration of viability in the brain tissue beyond the glial boundary. Additionally, neonatal ischemic injury leads to the altered expression of key molecules such as Aldh1L1 and Olig2 in immature astrocytes. In conclusion, we demonstrated the dynamic changes in glial cells and neuronal expression following different degrees of ischemic injury in a mouse model of PTS. These findings provide new insights for studying the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neuroprotection and neural regeneration after neonatal ischemic injury.

Preharvest threshing is a harvesting method that focuses on collecting rice grains while leaving the rice straw unharvested. Investigating the interaction mechanism between the machine and rice during the operation process and its correlation with harvest losses is crucial for enhancing harvest quality. In this study, structural design and operational mechanism analysis of the combs was conducted through theoretical analysis. By extracting the relevant parameters of rice plants, a model of entire-plant rice during the harvesting period was established based on the discrete element method (DEM). Numerical simulation studies were conducted to clarify the interaction mechanism between the machinery and rice at different operating stages and under various operating parameters, as well as the impact of this interaction on operational quality. The simulation results revealed that various operating parameters had a significant impact on the sliding-cut effect between the combs and rice. A higher cylinder rotation speed enhanced the effect, whereas increased forward velocity hampered it. Additionally, the effect initially improved and then decreased with a higher threshing height. In the bench test, high-speed cameras were used to verify and further analyze the comb–rice interaction mechanism and explore the optimal working parameter combination. The results showed that at a rotation speed of 616 r/min, a forward velocity of 0.91 m/s, and a threshing height of 792 mm, the grain loss rate was 1.997%, and the impurity rate was 4.073%. The harvesting losses were effectively reduced, validating the effectiveness of the study on the interaction between the machinery and rice.

In order to solve the problems of poor hole-filling performance and the high seed-breakage rate of conventional rice bud seed precision hole direct seed-metering devices, a side-filled rice precision hole direct seed-metering device was developed, and the mechanism and force analyses for seeding operations were carried out. The key factors affecting seeding quality were determined: rotation speed, seeding angle and seeding height. By coupling the discrete element method (DEM) and multi-rigid body dynamics (MBD), the seed breakage rate and seeding performance at different rotation speeds were analyzed. Single-factor bench testing was used to analyze the effect of a duckbill unit on seeding performance under different factor levels. The three-factor and five-level quadratic regression orthogonal rotation center combination test methods were used to obtain the optimal working parameter combination. The test results showed that when the rotation speed was 47 r/min, the seeding angle was 19°, and the seeding height was 180 mm, the qualified index of seeding was 92.03%, the hole diameter qualified index was 91.62%, and the hole distance variation index was 7.17%. This study provides a reference for the research of mechanical rice sprouting seed-metering devices.

Variation in leaf traits is critical for carbon gains and losses during leaf life and drives litter carbon and nutrient losses via decomposition. Accurately quantifying litter decomposition parameters is essential for assessing ecosystem carbon and nutrient dynamics. Leaf litterbags have commonly been employed to measure effects of environmental drivers, decomposers, and plant traits on decomposition rates. There has been much debate regarding the suitability of substituting senesced dead leaves with fresh (green) leaves in litterbags, which has been common practice for mimicking green leaf fall or for practical reasons. Therefore, we tested the null hypothesis that replacement of dead leaves with fresh leaves in litterbag experiments is justified, based on similarities in structural and chemical traits between fresh and dead leaves across plant species and growth forms.We conducted a paired litterbag decomposition experiment with both fresh and dead leaves of 26 common species in subtropical China, in each of five contrasting ecosystems.While fresh leaves generally decomposed faster than dead leaves, this deviation varied among species and growth forms, based on their traits. Overall, there was significant but rather weak correlation between dead leaf decomposition rate k and fresh leaf k, across species and ecosystem types; the deviation between fresh and dead leaf k was larger for fast‐decomposing, mostly herbaceous species. The different decomposition patterns for fresh versus dead leaves were underpinned by key underlying traits integrated in leaf resource economics spectra (LES) for fresh and dead leaves. The dead leaf LES exhibited a greater predictive capability for dead leaf k while the fresh leaf LES had higher explanatory value for the fresh leaf k values.Our findings partly reject the null hypothesis and ask for caution in inferring leaf litter decomposition rates based on green leaf litterbags or traits data. We suggest follow‐up research on substituting senesced roots and stems with fresh ones in decomposition experiments.Synthesis. Human activities and extreme weather events are leading to increasing pulse inputs of fresh plant parts and our study contributes to knowledge on how they contribute to overall decomposition rates besides senesced litter inputs. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by a gradual loss of kidney function and affects ~13.4% of the global population. Progressive tubulointerstitial fibrosis, driven in part by proximal tubule (PT) damage, is a hallmark of late stages of CKD and contributes to the development of kidney failure, for which there are limited treatment options. Normal kidney development requires signaling by vitamin A (retinol), which is metabolized to retinoic acid (RA), an endogenous agonist for the RA receptors (RARα, β, γ). RARα levels are decreased in a mouse model of diabetic nephropathy and restored with RA administration; additionally, RA treatment reduced fibrosis. We developed a mouse model in which a spatiotemporal (tamoxifen-inducible) deletion of RARα in kidney PT cells of adult mice causes mitochondrial dysfunction, massive PT injury, and apoptosis without the use of additional nephrotoxic substances. Long-term effects (3 to 4.5 mo) of RARα deletion include increased PT secretion of transforming growth factor β1, inflammation, interstitial fibrosis, and decreased kidney function, all of which are major features of human CKD. Therefore, RARα's actions in PTs are crucial for PT homeostasis, and loss of RARα causes injury and a key CKD phenotype. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

旨在为制备不同风味品质的菜籽油提供理论依据，通过感官风味品质评价、电子鼻分析、顶空固相微萃取气相色谱-质谱联用技术（HS-SPME-GC×GC/MS）等手段，研究了微波处理对菜籽油风味的影响。结果表明：微波能输入总量和输入强度均影响菜籽油感官风味品质；电子鼻分析结果表明，浓香菜籽油与非浓香菜籽油的挥发性风味成分具有相似性;非浓香菜籽油主要风味物质有23种，包含醛类物质7种、硫类物质5种、醇类物质3种、酸类物质2种、酯类物质2种、杂环类物质2种、烯烃类和酚类物质各1种，为非浓香菜籽油提供辛辣味、脂香味、青草味和花香味等风味；浓香菜籽油中主要风味物质有13种，包含硫类物质5种、杂环类物质3种、醛类物质2种以及酚类、醇类和酸类物质各1种，主要赋予浓香菜籽油辛辣味、烤香味、焙烤味和脂香味等风味。综上，微波预处理技术对菜籽油的风味有显著影响，随着微波能的输入，菜籽油风味由主要以硫苷降解物和氧化挥发物为主导的辛辣味、脂香味、青草味、花香味，转变为以硫苷降解物、美拉德反应产物和氧化挥发物为主导的辛辣味、烤香味、焙烤味和脂香味。Aiming to provide a theoretical basis for the preparation of rapeseed oil with different flavor qualities, the effect of microwave treatment on the flavor of rapeseed oil was investigated by means of sensory flavor quality evaluation, electronic nose analysis, and headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS - SPME - GC×GC/MS). The results showed that the total amount and intensity of microwave energy input affected the sensory flavor quality of rapaseed oil. The electronic nose results showed that the flavor components of fragrant rapeseed oil and non-fragrant rapeseed oil were similar. There were 23 main flavor substances in non-fragrant rapeseed oil, including 7 aldehydes, 5 sulphur substances, 3 alcohols, 2 acids, 2 esters, 2 heterocyclics and 1 each of olefins and phenols, which provided pungent, oily, grassy and floral flavors to non-fragrant rapeseed oil. There were 13 main flavor substances in fragrant rapeseed oil, including 5 sulphur substances, 3 heterocyclics, 2 aldehydes, and 1 each of phenols, alcohols and acids, which mainly gave fragrant rapeseed oil pungent, roasted, bakery and oily flavors. In conclusion, microwave pretreatment technology has a significant effect on the flavor of rapeseed oil. With the input of microwave energy, the flavor of rapeseed oil mainly changes from pungent, oily, grassy and floral flavors dominated by thioglycoside degradation products and oxidized volatiles to pungent, roasted, bakery and oily flavors, dominated by the products of the thioglycoside degradation products Maillard reaction products and oxidized volatiles.

Abstract Background and objectives Older adults keep transforming with Baby Boomers and Gen Xers being the leading older population. Their lifestyle, however, is not well understood. The middle-aged and older Chinese adults’ health using actigraphy in Taiwan (MOCHA-T) collected both objective and subjective data to depict the health and lifestyle of this population. The objectives, design, and measures of the MOCHA-T study are introduced, and the caveats and future directions related to the use of the data are presented. Methods People aged 50 and over were recruited from the community, with a subset of women aged 45–49 invited to supplement data on menopause and aging. Four instruments (i.e., self-reported questionnaires, diary, wrist actigraphy recorder, and GPS) were used to collect measures of sociodemographic, health, psychosocial, behavioral, temporal, and spatial data. Results A total of 242 participants who returned the informed consent and questionnaires were recruited in the MOCHA-T study. Among them, 94.6%, 95.0%, and 25.2% also completed the diary, actigraphy, and GPS data, respectively. There was almost no difference in sociodemographic characteristics between those with and without a completed diary, actigraphy, and GPS data, except for age group and educational level for those who returned completed actigraphy data. Conclusion The MOCHA-T study is a multidimensional dataset that allows researchers to describe the health, behaviors, and lifestyle patterns, and their interactions with the environment of the newer generation of middle-aged and older adults in Taiwan. It can be compared with other countries with actigraphy and GPS-based lifestyle data of middle-aged and older adults in the future.

Neonicotinoid insecticides, which target insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), have been widely and intensively used to control the whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, a highly damaging, globally distributed, crop pest. This has inevitably led to the emergence of populations with resistance to neonicotinoids. However, to date, there have been no reports of target-site resistance involving mutation of B. tabaci nAChR genes. Here we characterize the nAChR subunit gene family of B. tabaci and identify dual mutations (A58T&R79E) in one of these genes (BTβ1) that confer resistance to multiple neonicotinoids. Transgenic D. melanogaster, where the native nAChR Dβ1 was replaced with BTβ1A58T&R79E, were significantly more resistant to neonicotinoids than flies where Dβ1 were replaced with the wildtype BTβ1 sequence, demonstrating the causal role of the mutations in resistance. The two mutations identified in this study replace two amino acids that are highly conserved in >200 insect species. Three-dimensional modelling suggests a molecular mechanism for this resistance, whereby A58T forms a hydrogen bond with the R79E side chain, which positions its negatively-charged carboxylate group to electrostatically repulse a neonicotinoid at the orthosteric site. Together these findings describe the first case of target-site resistance to neonicotinoids in B. tabaci and provide insight into the molecular determinants of neonicotinoid binding and selectivity.
