The current study employed a within-participant design to analyze the effects of head movements in three conditions (i.e., head nodding, head shaking, and no head movements) during positive (motivational) self-talk among 22 male cyclists. After the self-talk and head-movements task, physical performance (i.e., anaerobic power) was assessed using a Wingate Test for each experimental condition. Each cyclist participated individually on three separate days, completing one of the three experimental conditions each day. We hypothesized and found that the head-nodding condition resulted in greater physical performance (i.e., mean and peak power) than the no-head-movements condition. This is the first time that head nodding has been shown to improve physical performance compared with no head movements during encouraging and self-assuring self-talk. Relevantly, these findings emphasize the importance of focusing on athletes' nonverbal behavior (e.g., head movements) when engaging in positive (motivational) self-talk to perform better. Head movement plays a vital role in auditory processing by contributing to spatial awareness and the ability to identify and locate sound sources. Here we investigate head-orienting behaviors using a dual-task experimental paradigm to measure: (a) localization of a speech source; and (b) detection of meaningful speech (numbers), within a complex acoustic background. Ten younger adults with normal hearing and 20 older adults with mild-to-severe sensorineural hearing loss were evaluated in the free field on two headmovement conditions: (1) head fixed to the front and (2) head moving to a source location; and two context conditions: (1) with audio only or (2) with audio plus visual cues. Head-tracking analyses quantified the target location relative to head location, as well as the peak velocity during head movements. Evaluation of head-orienting behaviors revealed that both groups tended to undershoot the auditory target for targets beyond 60° in azimuth. Listeners with hearing loss had higher head-turn errors than the normal-hearing listeners, even when a visual location cue was provided. Digit detection accuracy was better for the normal-hearing than hearing-loss groups, with a main effect of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). When performing the dual-task paradigm in the most difficult listening environments, participants consistently demonstrated a wait-and-listen head-movement strategy, characterized by a short pause during which they maintained their head orientation and gathered information before orienting to the target location. Moving through a dynamic world, humans need to intermittently stabilize gaze targets on their retina to process visual information. Overt attention being thus split into discrete intervals, the automatic detection of such fixation events is paramount to downstream analysis in many eye-tracking studies. Standard algorithms tackle this challenge in the limiting case of little to no head motion. In this static scenario, which is approximately realized for most remote eye-tracking systems, it amounts to detecting periods of relative eye stillness. In contrast, head-mounted eye trackers allow for experiments with subjects moving naturally in everyday environments. Detecting fixations in these dynamic scenarios is more challenging, since gaze-stabilizing eye movements need to be reliably distinguished from non-fixational gaze shifts. Here, we propose several strategies for enhancing existing algorithms developed for fixation detection in the static case to allow for robust fixation detection in dynamic real-world scenarios recorded with head-mounted eye trackers. Specifically, we consider (i) an optic-flow-based compensation stage explicitly accounting for stabilizing eye movements during head motion, (ii) an adaptive adjustment of algorithm sensitivity according to head-motion intensity, and (iii) a coherent tuning of all algorithm parameters. Introducing a new hand-labeled dataset, recorded with the Pupil Invisible glasses by Pupil Labs, we investigate their individual contributions. The dataset comprises both static and dynamic scenarios and is made publicly available. We show that a combination of all proposed strategies improves standard thresholding algorithms and outperforms previous approaches to fixation detection in head-mounted eye tracking. We explored how body movements influence illusory body motion intensity and their association with motion sickness. Twelve individuals who were seated in the back of a passenger car, performed a visual task and were subjected to continuous rotations followed by driving in a straight line. The body movements during and immediately after rotation were categorized as follows: (A) upright posture; (B) leaning the body in the yaw direction towards the rotation center, returning the yaw angle to zero upon transitioning to straight line travel, and tilting in the roll condition and gradually returning to upright; and (C) tilting in roll conditions towards the centripetal direction during rotation and becoming upright upon transitioning to straight line travel. In experiment-1, after spanning half a lap, participants reported the intensity of the illusory motion experienced during straight line travel immediately after rotation. In experiment-2, after travelling up to eight laps, the participants reported the symptom level of motion sickness experienced during two straight sections per lap using the MIsery SCale (MISC). Experiment-1 revealed that condition (C) had significantly larger illusions than Conditions (A) and (B). Experiment-2 revealed that motion sickness progressed significantly more in Condition (C) than in Condition (A). A significant positive correlation was found between the observed MISC and the illusion strength. Our findings suggest that body movements during and immediately after continuous rotation have a significant impact on the illusion strength. Abstract In natural environments, head movements are required to search for objects outside the field of view (FoV). Here we investigate the power of a salient target in an extended visual search array to facilitate faster detection once this item comes into the FoV by a head movement. We conducted two virtual reality experiments using spatially clustered sets of stimuli to observe target detection and head and eye movements during visual search. Participants completed search tasks with three conditions: (1) target in the initial FoV, (2) head movement needed to bring the target into the FoV, (3) same as condition 2 but the periphery was initially hidden and appeared after the head movement had brought the location of the target set into the FoV. We measured search time until participants found a more salient (O) or less salient (T) target among distractors (L). On average O’s were found faster than T’s. Gaze analysis showed that saliency facilitation occurred due to the target guiding the search only if it was within the initial FoV. When targets required a head movement to enter the FoV, participants followed the same search strategy as in trials without a visible target in the periphery. Moreover, faster search times for salient targets were only caused by the time required to find the target once the target set was reached. This suggests that the effect of stimulus saliency differs between visual search on fixed displays and when we are actively searching through an extended visual field.

With increasing automation in the rail sector, the train driver’s task changes from full control to a supervisory position. This bears the risk of monotony and subsequent changes in visual attention, possibly for the worse. Similar to concepts in car driving, one solution for this could be driver state monitoring with triggered interventions in case of declining task attention. Previous research on train drivers’ visual attention has used eye tracking. In contrast, head tracking is easier to realize within the train driver cabin. This study set out to test whether head tracking is a feasible alternative to eye tracking and can provide similar findings. Based on previous eye-tracking research, we compared differences in head movements in automated vs. manual driving, and for different levels of driving speed and driving experience. We conducted a study with 25 active train drivers in a high-fidelity train simulator. Statistical analyses revealed no significant difference in the vertical head movements between automation levels. There was a significant difference in the horizontal head movements, with train drivers looking more to the right for manual driving. We found no significant influence of driving speed and experience on head movements. Safety implications and the feasibility of head tracking as an alternative to eye tracking are discussed.

Altered head range of motion (RoM) and head repositioning accuracy (HRA) are commonly reported in neck pain. However, the quality of motion (QoM) is currently not easy to assess clinically. This study investigated the agreement of head rotation recordings using a 3D camera system compared to a commercially available inertial measurement unit (MOTI). Thirty participants, mean age 26.5 years old (SD 4.4), partook in this study. Participants wore a Headband with MOTI and markers for 3D motion capture analysis during head rotations. The two systems recorded active head RoM in rotation, HRA, and QoM. Agreement of RoM, HRA and QoM data was compared between the two systems using Interclass correlation coefficients (ICC; 2.1) and Bland-Altman plots. Good to excellent agreement between the two systems was seen for RoM (ICC: 0.998), HRA (0.75–0.88) and QoM (ICC: 0.911–0.913). The Bland-Altman plots revealed a systemic offset where the MOTI device measured higher values for RoM (mean bias: −0.56 ± 0.65°), HRA (mean bias: 0.48 ± 0.76°) and QoM (mean bias: −16.9 ± 51.6 A.U.). The present study found that the MOTI device can accurately measure RoM, HRA and QoM during head rotation. MOTI may be preferred over a 3D camera system for clinical use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: We aimed to evaluate eye and head movements, which are objective parameters in ADHD. Method: While the children were watching the course video task, which included the relevant (teacher and smart board) and irrelevant (any regions outside the relevant area) areas of interest, their eye movements were evaluated through eye tracking, and video recordings were made simultaneous. Head position estimation was made using through video recordings. The proportion of total fixation duration on areas of interest (PFDAOI) and saccade count, amplitude, velocity for eye movements, number of total head movements and angular change of head movement in x - y - z axes for head movements were compared. Results: Children with ADHD had lower PFDAOI on the relevant area, and had more saccade and head movements The angular change of head movement in the x-axis was higher in the ADHD group. There are several factors for vehicle accidents during driving such as drivers' negligence, drowsiness, and fatigue. These accidents can be avoided, if drivers are warned in time. Moreover, recent developments in computer vision and artificial intelligence (AI) have helped to monitor drivers and alert them in case they are not concentrating on driving. The AI techniques can extract relevant features from expressions of driver's face, such as eye closure, yawning, and head movements to infer the level of sleepiness. In addition, they can acquire biological signals from the driver's body, and indications from the vehicle behavior. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the detection techniques of drowsiness and fatigue of drivers using machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL). The current techniques for this application are classified into four categories: image- or video-based analysis during the driving, biological signal analysis for drivers, vehicle movement analysis, and hybrid techniques. A review of supervised techniques is presented for detecting fatigue and drowsiness on different datasets, with a comparison of the various techniques in terms of pros and cons. Results are presented in terms of accuracy of detection for each technique. The results are discussed according to the recent problems and challenges in this field. The paper also highlights the applicability and reliability of the different techniques. Introduction: Benign recurrent vertigo (BRV), Menière's disease (MD), and vestibular migraine (VM) show many similarities with regard to the course of vertigo attacks and clinical features. In this paper, we elaborate on the decreasing frequency of vertigo attacks observed in a previous study from our group by exploring changes in the duration and trigger factors of vertigo attacks in patients with BRV, MD, or VM. Methods: For this 3-year prospective cohort study in our tertiary referral center we recruited patients with a confirmed diagnosis of BRV, MD, or VM by a neurologist and otorhinolaryngologist in our center in 2015–2016. A study-specific questionnaire was used to assess the usual duration of vertigo attacks and their potential triggers every 6 months. Main outcome measures were changes in duration and trigger factors of vertigo attacks in the subgroups of patients with persisting attacks, which were analyzed using repeated measures logistic regression models. Results: 121 patients were included (BRV: n = 44; MD: n = 43; VM: n = 34) of whom 117 completed the 3-year follow-up period and 57 (48.7%) kept reporting vertigo attacks at one more follow-up measurements. None of the diagnosis groups showed statistically significant shortening of attack duration at the subsequent annual follow-up measurements compared to baseline. At baseline, stress and fatigue being reported as triggers for attacks differed significantly between the three groups (stress: BRV 40.9%, MD 62.8%, VM 76.5%, p = 0.005; fatigue: BRV 31.0%, MD 48.8%, VM 68.8%, p = 0.003). In the VM group, a consistent reduction of stress and fatigue as triggers was observed up until the 24- and the 30-month follow-up measurements, respectively, with odds ratios (ORs) ranging from 0.15 to 0.33 (all p < 0.05). In the MD group, a consistent reduction of head movements as trigger was observed from the 24-month measurement onward (ORs ranging from 0.07 to 0.11, all p < 0.05). Conclusion: Our study showed no reduction in vertigo attack duration over time in patients with BRV, MD, and VM who remain to have vertigo attacks. In VM and MD patients with persisting vertigo attacks stress, fatigue and head movements became less predominant triggers for vertigo attacks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Head movements of insects play a vital role in diverse locomotory behaviors including flying and walking. Because insect eyes move minimally within their sockets, their head movements are essential to reduce visual blur and maintain a stable gaze. As in most vertebrates, gaze stabilization behavior in insects requires the integration of both visual and mechanosensory feedback by the neck motor neurons. Although visual feedback is derived from the optic flow over the retina of their compound eyes, mechanosensory feedback is derived from their organs of balance, similar to the vestibular system in vertebrates. In Diptera, vestibular feedback is derived from the halteres—modified hindwings that evolved into mechanosensory organs—and is integrated with visual feedback to actuate compensatory head movements. However, non‐Dipteran insects, including Lepidoptera, lack halteres. In these insects, vestibular feedback is obtained from the antennal Johnston's organs but it is not well‐understood how it integrates with visual feedback during head movements. Indeed, although head movements are well‐studied in flies, the underlying motor apparatus in non‐Dipteran taxa has received relatively less attention. As a first step toward understanding compensatory head movements in the Oleander hawkmoth Daphnis nerii, we image the anatomy and architecture of their neck joint sclerites and muscles using X‐ray microtomography, and the associated motor neurons using fluorescent dye fills and confocal microscopy. Based on these morphological data, we propose testable hypotheses about the putative function of specific neck muscles during head movements, which can shed light on their role in neck movements and gaze stabilization. Visual motion information plays an important role in the control of movements in sports. Skilled ball players are thought to acquire accurate visual information by using an effective visual search strategy with eye and head movements. However, differences in catching ability and gaze movements due to sports experience and expertise have not been clarified. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of gaze strategies based on eye and head movements during a ball-catching task in athlete and novice groups. Participants were softball and tennis players and college students who were not experienced in ball sports (novice). They performed a one-handed catching task using a tennis ball-shooting machine, which was placed at 9 m in front of the participants, and two conditions were set depending on the height of the ball trajectory (high and low conditions). Their head and eye velocities were detected using a gyroscope and electrooculography (EOG) during the task. Our results showed that the upward head velocity and the downward eye velocity were lower in the softball group than in the tennis and novice groups. When the head was pitched upward, the downward eye velocity was induced from the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) during ball catching. Therefore, it is suggested that skilled ball players have relatively stable head and eye movements, which may lead to an effective gaze strategy. An advantage of the stationary gaze in the softball group could be to acquire visual information about the surroundings other than the ball.

Face-to-face meetings on a conference table are a frequent form of communication. The short-range exposure risk of aerosol disease transmission is high in the scenario of susceptible facing the infectious person over the table. We propose a mitigation methodology using the air curtain to reduce direct exposure to virus-laden aerosols. A numerical model was validated with experimental data to simulate the dispersion of aerosols. A dynamic mesh was adopted to consider the head movement of a 3D thermal manikin model. Results show that nodding head increase the potential risk by 74 % compared to motionless. Subsequently, for a single air curtain, placing it in the middle of the table is more effective in preventing risks than on the sides. For double air curtains, increasing the distance between them has a greater risk reduction effect than a shorter distance. Increasing the air velocity or width is more effective than increasing the number of air curtains. A moderate velocity (1 m s−1) works well to reduce the risk of nasal breathing. A higher velocity (2 m s−1) is needed for the coughing scenario. For similar indoor environments, the air curtains on the table can offer active precautions without changing the current ventilation system. Quality assessment (QA) of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) encompasses several factors such as noise, contrast, homogeneity, and imaging artifacts. Quality evaluation is often not standardized and relies on the expertise, and vigilance of the personnel, posing limitations especially with large datasets. Machine learning based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is a promising approach to address these challenges by performing automated inspection of MR images. In this study, a CNN for the detection of random head motion artifacts (RHM) in T1-weighted MRI as one aspect of image quality is proposed. A two-step approach aimed to first identify images exhibiting pronounced motion artifacts, and second to evaluate the feasibility of a more detailed three-class classification. The utilized dataset consisted of 420 T1-weighted whole-brain image volumes with isotropic resolution. Human experts assigned each volume to one of three classes of artifact prominence. Results demonstrate an accuracy of 95% for the identification of images with pronounced artifact load. The addition of an intermediate class retained an accuracy of 76%. The findings highlight the potential of CNN-based approaches to increase the efficiency of post - hoc QAs in large datasets by flagging images with potentially relevant artifact loads for closer inspection.

Previous research has shown that prosodic structure can regulate the relationship between co-speech gestures and speech itself. Most co-speech studies have focused on manual gestures, but head movements have also been observed to accompany speech events by Munhall, Jones, Callan, Kuratate, and Vatikiotis-Bateson [(2004). Psychol. Sci. 15(2), 133-137], and these co-verbal gestures may be linked to prosodic prominence, as shown by Esteve-Gibert, Borrás-Comes, Asor, Swerts, and Prieto [(2017). J. Acoust. Soc. This study examines how the timing and magnitude of head nods may be related to degrees of prosodic prominence connected to different focus conditions. Using electromagnetic articulometry, a time-varying signal of vertical head movement for 12 native French speakers was generated to examine the relationship between head nod gestures and F0 peaks. The results suggest that speakers use two different alignment strategies, which integrate both temporal and magnitudinal aspects of the gesture. Some evidence of inter-speaker preferences in the use of the two strategies was observed, although the inter-speaker variability is not categorical. Importantly, prosodic prominence itself is not the cause of the difference between the two strategies, but instead magnifies their inherent differences. When completing a task, the ability to implement behavioral strategies to solve it in an effective and cognitively less-demanding way is extremely adaptive for humans. This behavior makes it possible to accumulate evidence and test one’s own predictions about the external world. In this work, starting from examples in the field of spatial hearing research, I analyze the importance of considering motor strategies in perceptual tasks, and I stress the urgent need to create ecological experimental settings, which are essential in allowing the implementation of such behaviors and in measuring them. Optical tracking of head pose via fiducial markers has been proven to enable effective correction of motion artifacts in the brain during magnetic resonance imaging but remains difficult to implement in the clinic due to lengthy calibration and set up times. Advances in deep learning for markerless head pose estimation have yet to be applied to this problem because of the sub-millimetre spatial resolution required for motion correction. In the present work, two optical tracking systems are described for the development and training of a neural network: one marker-based system (a testing platform for measuring ground truth head pose) with high tracking fidelity to act as the training labels, and one markerless deep-learning-based system using images of the markerless head as input to the network. The markerless system has the potential to overcome issues of marker occlusion, insufficient rigid attachment of the marker, lengthy calibration times, and unequal performance across degrees of freedom (DOF), all of which hamper the adoption of marker-based solutions in the clinic. Detail is provided on the development of a custom moiré-enhanced fiducial marker for use as ground truth and on the calibration procedure for both optical tracking systems. Additionally, the development of a synthetic head pose dataset is described for the proof of concept and initial pre-training of a simple convolutional neural network. Results indicate that the ground truth system has been sufficiently calibrated and can track head pose with an error of <1 mm and <1°. Tracking data of a healthy, adult participant are shown. Pre-training results show that the average root-mean-squared error across the 6 DOF is 0.13 and 0.36 (mm or degrees) on a head model included and excluded from the training dataset, respectively. Overall, this work indicates excellent feasibility of the deep-learning-based approach and will enable future work in training and testing on a real dataset in the MRI environment.

Head-worn devices (HWDs) interfere with the natural transmission of sound from the source to the ears of the listener, worsening their localization abilities. The localization errors introduced by HWDs have been mostly studied in static scenarios, but these errors are reduced if head movements are allowed. We studied the effect of 12 HWDs on an auditory-cued visual search task, where head movements were not restricted. In this task, a visual target had to be identified in a three-dimensional space with the help of an acoustic stimulus emitted from the same location as the visual target. The results showed an increase in the search time caused by the HWDs. Acoustic measurements of a dummy head wearing the studied HWDs showed evidence of impaired localization cues, which were used to estimate the perceived localization errors using computational auditory models of static localization. These models were able to explain the search-time differences in the perceptual task, showing the influence of quadrant errors in the auditory-aided visual search task. Background: Functional tic-like behaviors (FTLBs) can be difficult to distinguish from tics., Objectives: To describe the phenomenology of FTLBs in youth and assess the movements and vocalizations most suggestive of the diagnosis., Methods: We compared the phenomenology of tics between youth (<20 yr) with FTLBs and with primary tics from our Registry in Calgary, Canada., Results: Two hundred and thirty-six youths were included: 195 with primary tics (75% males; mean age: 10.8 yr) and 41 with FTLBs (98% females; 16.1 yr). In the bivariate models, FTLBs were most associated with copropraxia (OR = 15.5), saying words (OR = 14.5), coprolalia (OR = 13.1), popping (OR = 11.0), whistling (OR = 9.8), simple head movements (OR = 8.6), and self-injurious behaviors (OR = 6.9). In the multivariable model, FTLBs were still associated with saying words (OR = 13.5) and simple head movements (OR = 6.3). Only 12.2% of youth with FTLBs had throat clearing tics (OR = 0.2)., Conclusions: This study shall help physicians diagnose youth with FTLBs according to the presence/association of specific movements and vocalizations., (© 2024 The Authors. Significance: Endotracheal intubation is a common approach for airway management in critically ill patients. However, the position of the endotracheal tube (ETT) may be altered during the procedure due to head movements. Accidental displacement or dislodge of the ETT may reduce the airflow, leading to moderate to severe complications, and in some cases even fatality. Therefore, timely detection of changes in ETT position in the trachea is critical to ensure immediate and intermediate interventions to maintain the ETT in the proper position. Currently, there are no widely utilized tools for real-time monitoring of ETT positions., Aim: The goal of this study is to develop a cost-effective and easy-to-use near-infrared (NIR) device, named Opt-ETT, capable of continuously monitoring the ETT position in the trachea of a patient., Approach: A side-firing fiber is attached to the side of the ETT to illuminate the trachea tissue with NIR light, and a detector board containing five phototransistors is affixed to the chest skin to measure the intensity of diffusely transmitted light. Displacement of the ETT is estimated using second-order polynomial fitting to the ratios of the phototransistor readings. Monte Carlo simulations, ex vivo experiment on porcine tissue, and in vivo experiments using a swine model have been conducted to assess the feasibility of the device., Results: The design of the Opt-ETT device has been verified by the Monte Carlo simulations and ex vivo experiment. The estimation of displacement from in vivo experiments using the Opt-ETT exhibited a high degree of agreement with that measured by a reference sensor, with a discrepancy between - 1.0 to + 1.5    mm within a displacement range from - 15 to + 15    mm ., Conclusions: The Opt-ETT device provides a potentially cost-effective solution for real-time and continuous monitoring of ETT position in patient during an intubation procedure., (© 2024 The Authors.)

To understand human behavior, it is essential to study it in the context of natural movement in immersive, three-dimensional environments. Virtual reality (VR), with head-mounted displays, offers an unprecedented compromise between ecological validity and experimental control. However, such technological advancements mean that new data streams will become more widely available, and therefore, a need arises to standardize methodologies by which these streams are analyzed. One such data stream is that of head position and rotation tracking, now made easily available from head-mounted systems. The current study presents five candidate algorithms of varying complexity for classifying head movements. Each algorithm is compared against human rater classifications and graded based on the overall agreement as well as biases in metrics such as movement onset/offset time and movement amplitude. Finally, we conclude this article by offering recommendations for the best practices and considerations for VR researchers looking to incorporate head movement analysis in their future studies.

The vestibulo-collic reflex generates neck motor commands to produce head-on-trunk movements that are essential for stabilizing the head relative to space. Here we examined the effects of vestibular loss on head-on-trunk kinematics during voluntary behavior. Head and trunk movements were measured in individuals with vestibular schwannoma before and then 6 weeks after unilateral vestibular deafferentation via surgical resection of the tumor. Movements were recorded in 6 dimensions (i.e., 3 axes of rotation and 3 axes of translation) using small light-weight inertial measurement units while participants performed balance and gait tasks. Kinematic measures differed between individuals with vestibular schwannoma (at both time points) and healthy controls for the more challenging exercises, namely those performed in tandem position or on an unstable surface without visual input. Quantitative assessment of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) revealed a reduction in VOR gain for individuals with vestibular schwannoma compared to control subjects, that was further reduced following surgery. These findings indicated that the impairment caused by either the tumor or subsequent surgical tumor resection altered head-on-trunk kinematics in a manner that is not normalized by central compensation. In contrast, we further found that head-on-trunk kinematics in individuals with vestibular schwannoma were actually comparable before and after surgery. Thus, taken together, our results indicate that vestibular loss impacts head-on-trunk kinematics during voluntary balance and gait behaviors, and suggest that the neural mechanisms mediating adaptation alter the motion strategies even before surgery in a manner that may be maladaptive for long-term compensation., (© 2024. Localizing sounds in noisy environments can be challenging. Here, we reproduce real-life soundscapes to investigate the effects of environmental noise on sound localization experience. We evaluated participants' performance and metacognitive assessments, including measures of sound localization effort and confidence, while also tracking their spontaneous head movements. Normal-hearing participants (N = 30) were engaged in a speech-localization task conducted in three common soundscapes that progressively increased in complexity: nature, traffic, and a cocktail party setting. To control visual information and measure behaviors, we used visual virtual reality technology. The results revealed that the complexity of the soundscape had an impact on both performance errors and metacognitive evaluations. Participants reported increased effort and reduced confidence for sound localization in more complex noise environments. On the contrary, the level of soundscape complexity did not influence the use of spontaneous exploratory head-related behaviors. We also observed that, irrespective of the noisy condition, participants who implemented a higher number of head rotations and explored a wider extent of space by rotating their heads made lower localization errors. Interestingly, we found preliminary evidence that an increase in spontaneous head movements, specifically the extent of head rotation, leads to a decrease in perceived effort and an increase in confidence at the single-trial level. We asked whether the quantitative kinematics of standing postural activity might be related to short-term learning of affordances. Standing participants viewed a narrow path for 15 s, and then gave perceptual reports about the distance that they could walk along the path while wearing a weighted vest (novel affordance) or while not wearing the vest (familiar affordance). In a control condition, participants gave perceptual reports about egocentric distance along the path. During the 15 s viewing intervals, we measured the kinematics of head and torso movement as standing participants made a series of 12 perceptual reports. Perceptual reports improved across trials, but only in the condition in which participants were asked to perceive a novel affordance. The dynamical complexity of head movement changed across trials as participants gave perceptual reports about the novel affordance, but did not change systematically when perceiving a familiar affordance, or a non-affordance egocentric distance. We argue that the dynamical complexity of postural activity may have served an exploratory function supporting the learning of a novel affordance. Our results are consistent with the broader hypothesis that affordances are learned through active engagement with the environment, rather than (for example) through abstract cognitive processing.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in behaving monkeys has a strong potential to bridge the gap between human neuroimaging and primate neurophysiology. In monkey fMRI, to restrain head movements, researchers usually surgically implant a plastic head-post on the skull. Although time-proven to be effective, this technique could create burdens for animals, including a risk of infection and discomfort. Furthermore, the presence of extraneous objects on the skull, such as bone screws and dental cement, adversely affects signals near the cortical surface. These side effects are undesirable in terms of both the practical aspect of efficient data collection and the spirit of "refinement" from the 3R's. Here, we demonstrate that a completely non-invasive fMRI scan in awake monkeys is possible by using a plastic head mask made to fit the skull of individual animals. In all of the three monkeys tested, longitudinal, quantitative assessment of head movements showed that the plastic mask has effectively suppressed head movements, and we were able to obtain reliable retinotopic BOLD signals in a standard retinotopic mapping task. Neck muscle weakness due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) can result in dropped head syndrome, adversely impacting the quality of life of those affected. Static neck collars are currently prescribed to hold the head in a fixed upright position. However, these braces are uncomfortable and do not allow any voluntary head-neck movements. By contrast, powered neck exoskeletons have the potential to enable head-neck movements. Our group has recently improved the mechanical structure of a state-of-the-art neck exoskeleton through a weighted optimization. To evaluate the effect of the structural changes, we conducted an experiment in which patients with ALS were asked to perform head-neck tracking tasks while using the two versions of the neck exoskeleton. We found that the neck muscle activation was significantly reduced when assisted by the structurally enhanced design compared to no assistance provided. The improved structure also improved kinematics tracking performance, allowing users to better achieve the desired head poses. In comparison, the previous design did not help reduce the muscle effort required to perform these tasks and even slightly worsened the kinematic tracking performance. It was also found that biomechanical benefits gained from using the structurally improved design were consistent across participants with both mild and severe neck weakness. Furthermore, we observed that participants preferred to use the powered neck exoskeletons to voluntarily move their heads and make eye contact during a conversation task rather than remain in a fixed upright position. Each of these findings highlights the importance of the structural design of neck exoskeletons in achieving desired biomechanical benefits and suggests that neck exoskeletons can be a viable method to improve the daily life of patients with ALS.

The present study aimed to define use of head and eye movements during sound localization in children and adults to: (1) assess effects of stationary versus moving sound and (2) define effects of binaural cues degraded through acute monaural ear plugging. Thirty-three youth ( M Age  = 24.6 years) with typical hearing were recruited and asked to localize white noise anywhere within a horizontal arc from -60° (left) to +60° (right) azimuth in two conditions (typical binaural and right ear plugged). In each trial, sound was presented at an initial stationary position (L1) and then while moving at ∼4°/s until reaching a second position (L2). Sound moved in five conditions (±40°, ±20°, or 0°). Participants adjusted a laser pointer to indicate L1 and L2 positions. Unrestricted head and eye movements were collected with gyroscopic sensors on the head and eye-tracking glasses, respectively. Results confirmed that accurate sound localization of both stationary and moving sound is disrupted by acute monaural ear plugging. Eye movements preceded head movements for sound localization in normal binaural listening and head movements were larger than eye movements during monaural plugging. Head movements favored the unplugged left ear when stationary sounds were presented in the right hemifield and during sound motion in both hemifields regardless of the movement direction. Disrupted binaural cues have greater effects on localization of moving than stationary sound.
