Red light (600–700 nm, ∼2.1–1.8 eV) consists of a low-energy radiation with a high capacity to penetrate the skin and to induce stimulatory effects. These characteristics make this wavelength range very promising for light-based therapies. Aiming to discuss the mechanisms of action of photobiomodulation, we start by providing a broad perspective of the skin and of its interaction with light, focusing on the endogenous photosensitizers, on the formation of excited states and reactive oxidants, and on the activation of signaling effectors. The peculiar aspect of the photons in the red spectral range is that they are much less absorbed by the endogenous photosensitizers and consequently generate a lot fewer reactive oxidants (when compared with the other ranges of visible light), allowing the skin to mainly experience the consequences of several signaling pathways that are activated during the skin interaction with red-light photons. Indeed, the effects of red light in epithelial cells involve the control of metabolic responses, the modulation of several key genes and transcriptions factors, as well as the regulation of the intracellular nitric oxide stocks. In this article, we discuss how red light interacts with all these variables and end up causing a vigorous tissue activation. We also analyzed the effect of red-light photons on the nitric oxide homeostasis, with implications for the phototherapy of psoriasis. It is likely that several of the observations and mechanisms described for the interactions of red-light photons may also be occurring during and after the interaction with other photons with similar energy. In this article, we use a laboratory experiment to study the effects of relational contracts on market efficiency in environments with different degrees of contract enforceability and market competition. By exogenously varying the communication protocol, we create relational contracts that are more personal or impersonal. On the one hand, personal relational contracts improve efficiency by promoting trust and coordination. On the other hand, impersonal relational contracts increase efficiency by facilitating the severance of trading relationships when more productive competitors enter the market. Urban water management faces new challenges due to the rise of digital solutions and abundant data, leading to the development of data-centric tools for decision-making in global water utilities, with AI technologies poised to become a key trend in the sector. This paper proposes a novel methodology for optimal sensor placement aimed at supporting the creation of a digital twin for water infrastructure. A significant innovation in this study is the creation of a metamodel to estimate pressure at consumption nodes in a water supply system. This metamodel guides the optimal sensor configuration by minimizing the difference between estimated and observed pressures. Our methodology was tested on a synthetic case study, showing accurate results. The estimated pressures at each network node exhibited low error and high accuracy across all sensor configurations tested, highlighting the potential for future development of a digital twin for water distribution systems. The continuous increase of water distribution networks (WDNs) in size and complexity poses significant management challenges, including a high risk of failures. Due to the intrinsic interconnected feature of water flow, including losses, this study proposes a methodology based on graph correlation and multilayer network analysis for leak detection and localization in WDNs with multiple components (infrastructure, control devices, hydraulic sensors). The detection process involves correlating monitored data to create a temporal graph and classify vertices. The classification values are then analyzed by the z-score and interquartile range algorithms to detect anomalies. The localization process uses a multi-graph approach that combines sensor data and network topology to determine the sensor coverage area. The Dynamic Time Warping algorithm calculates the similarity between monitored and simulated leak data, identifying likely leak locations. The results demonstrate the methodology's effectiveness, detecting anomalies 15 minutes after the start of the leak and locating them within a 50-meter range from the actual location of the leak. Furthermore, the research highlights the advantages of using a method based on multilayer networks, which offers insights into leak location, sensor coverage, and reduction of the network's sample space. Objective: To assess incidence, risk factors and impact of acute kidney injury(AKI) within 48 h of intensive care unit(ICU) admission on ICU mortality in patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia. To assess ICU mortality and risk factors for continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) in AKI I and II patients., Design: Retrospective observational study., Setting: Sixty-seven ICU from Spain, Andorra, Ireland., Patients: 5399 patients March 2020 to April 2022., Main Variables of Interest: Demographic variables, comorbidities, laboratory data (worst values) during the first two days of ICU admission to generate a logistic regression model describing independent risk factors for AKI and ICU mortality. AKI was defined according to current international guidelines (kidney disease improving global outcomes, KDIGO)., Results: Of 5399 patients included 1879 (34.8%) developed AKI. These patients had higher ICU mortality and AKI was independently associated with a higher ICU mortality (HR 1.32 CI 1.17-1.48; p < 0.001). Male gender, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, chronic heart failure, myocardial dysfunction, higher severity scores, and procalcitonine were independently associated with the development of AKI. In AKI I and II patients the need for CRRT was 12.6% (217/1710). In these patients, APACHE II, need for mechanical ventilation in the first 24 h after ICU admission and myocardial dysfunction were associated with risk of needing CRRT. AKI I and II patients had a high ICU mortality (38.5%), especially if CRRT were required (64.1% vs. 34,8%; p < 0.001)., Conclusions: Critically ill patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia and AKI have a high ICU mortality.
