Search

As in other nations, higher education has many benefits for individual participants and for communities in the United States. But, the opportunity to attain higher education is unequal. To understand the forces that contribute to higher education attainment in the United States, this essay first provides a brief overview of the characteristics of the nation's higher education system. It then discusses the importance of academic preparation, financial resources, and information to college enrollment and success, as well as structural inequality in the availability of these resources. The essay then discusses how particular practices used by colleges and universities in the United States contribute to stratification in the transition from high school to college.

This research aimed 1) to study the framework in using the digital technology for empowering Thai people in rural areas, 2) to survey the information needs in digital media technology, and 3) to propose the prototype for developing the digital technology used. This research used the quantitative method in conducted the research which were divided into 3 steps: 1) surveying the opinion from 10 experts to confirmed the framework, 2) surveying the information need in the digital technology from sampling, and 3) surveying the prototype for developing an application as the digital technology used from sampling. Sampling came from 3 provinces (Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, and Chainat province) by purposive technique. The statistical methods used (mean and standard deviation) are appropriate for the data analysis. The results of each research aims were showed in this paper. The benefits of this study will be used as a guideline for developing the community in the used of digital technology. The limitation also showed as a recommendation to further study.

Background: More women are going outdoors and menstrual hygiene is a concern for these women, we do not know how collegiate outdoor programs are addressing this topic, if at all. It is possible that feminine hygiene may not be adequately discussed in these settings. Because of this, the overall health and outdoor experiences of female participants are potentially at risk. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of current practices and potential barriers surrounding feminine hygiene and menstruation dialogs in college outdoor recreation programs in Texas. Methodology/Approach: An open-ended online survey was distributed to 36 schools with outdoor recreation programs in Texas. Responses were independently analyzed and coded for emergent themes. Findings/Conclusions: Thirty-eight percent of schools did not address feminine hygiene and menstruation in pretrip communications. Predominant themes consisted of an emphasis on health and hygiene, dependence on female leaders, a need for more knowledge and resources, and a desire for normalization. Implications: Most professionals expressed that resources to expand their knowledge on these topics can help to better prepare participants. Current practices surrounding these topics may be insufficient and able to improve. Further research is needed to evaluate the efficacy of the curriculum and the preference of participants.

Objectives: In early 2021, Western Sydney school principals expressed heightened concern about rising e-cigarette usage among high school students. This prompted us to assess knowledge, attitudes and perceptions surrounding adolescent vaping in students, school staff and parents, and their preferred strategies to effectively communicate prevention messages. Design: Exploratory qualitative study. Setting: Participants included students (aged 12-16 years), school staff and parents from government high schools in Greater Western Sydney, Australia. Methods: We held research workshops with 162 students, 133 school staff and 29 parents across seven schools. We used interactive activities which included individual written responses, small-group brainstorming and open group discussions. Data analysis was undertaken by two researchers using Framework Analysis. Results: Findings demonstrated differing perceptions among students, staff and parents regarding reasons why adolescents vape. Although common motives emerged, such as the perception that vaping differs from smoking, social normalisation, peer pressure and mental health considerations, there were important differences in emphasis. Students were concerned about dependency and vaping to cope, staff were concerned about the impact of vaping on students' learning and behaviour, and parents were concerned about being ill-equipped to support their children. Strategies to tackle vaping also differed, with an emphasis on education and engagement over surveillance and consequences. Conclusion: Adolescent vaping is a pressing concern within Australian school communities, necessitating a comprehensive, holistic approach supported by strong partnerships between the health and education sectors. Addressing this issue effectively demands heightened education and engagement among students, staff and parents.

LBGTQ+ students often miss the support and information they need in the school nursing, but little is known about junior high school (JHS) nurses' work with LGBTQ+ students. 15 JHS nurses were interviewed in focus groups about their perceptions of supporting LGBTQ+ students. Four interconnected themes were identified with inductive thematic analysis: (1) JHS nurses' professional identity and practice; (2) Recognition of sexual and gender diversity in school; (3) Family acceptance process; and (4) LGBTQ+ students as school nursing clients. JHS nurses self-identified as accepting professionals, but having limited skills, knowledge, and education needed in supporting LGBTQ+ students. Supporting LGBTQ+ students is a complex phenomenon, and to enhance JHS nurses' competence in providing care for these students, sexual and gender diversity needs to be included in evidence-based nursing information sources, covered in nursing education, and the school needs to be secured as LGBTQ+ safe place.

Autistic individuals with intellectual disability are at greater risk of experiencing anxiety than their non-autistic peers without intellectual disability. Anxiety in this group may present as behaviour that challenges, often leading families to reach out to healthcare or support services. However, many families experience difficulties accessing services and, due to the lack of research into evidence-based anxiety interventions for people with intellectual disability, may not receive individualised support once in a service. This study explored caregivers' experiences of accessing services for autistic individuals with intellectual disability, and their considerations when developing new interventions for this population. Interviews and focus groups were completed with 16 caregivers of autistic people with intellectual disability. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to develop five themes about service access experiences, and three themes about caregiver considerations for anxiety interventions. Caregivers reported that their experiences of accessing services did not meet their expectations, and considerations for future anxiety interventions were often reflective of this. Interventions being flexible to family circumstances to aid accessibility, the embedding of peer support in services, and skills that can be generalised across the lifespan could be applied when aiming to improve outcomes and develop interventions for this under-served population.

Mission-driven nonprofit organizations sometimes struggle within a cycle of disempowerment resulting from oversaturation of data collection that is reactive to funder demands. In this article, we problematize Community Music School (CMS) data-collection and analysis efforts and discuss alternate approaches to learning about family and community desires and building community engagement. We first review literature on CMS goals, CMS engagement with communities, and the importance of student voice in educational research. Then, we briefly describe secondary analysis of a data subset from a previous study as context for critical discussion. Finally, drawing on literature from communications, urban planning, and school-family engagement, we make broader suggestions for how CMS can transform data collection practices into pathways for community engagement. We assert data quality and usefulness may improve when institutions seek input from community members who have not elected to participate and when CMS involve stakeholders in program design, goal setting, and measurement schemes from the outset. To that end, we describe three frameworks that could help CMS improve community engagement and make suggestions for future research.

Background: Despite the enactment of disability laws/policies in India, research shows that caregivers of adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities experience inadequate formal supports/services due to dissemination barriers and lack of awareness about them. To address discrepancy between caregivers' support needs and the professionals' understanding of their needs, the study proposed to conduct a caregiver needs assessment so that culturally-tailored programs are developed. Method: A strengths-based mixed methods needs assessment was conducted with a convenience sample of 100 caregivers in Hyderabad, India. One hundred caregivers completed the survey and 15 caregivers participated in semi-structured interviews. Results: Caregivers needed more and improved formal supports/services, particularly from the government. Caregivers faced systemic and attitudinal barriers, and personal impediments to accessing them. Needs differed by care recipients' intellectual disability level, gender, and intellectual disability related conditions. Conclusions: Researchers, service providers and policymakers need to adopt innovative strategies to improve formal supports/services access.

In combat sports, competition preparation is crucial, but research on this topic has been limited due to a lack of measurement tools. This study aimed to develop and validate the Multidimensional Assessment of Preparation for Sport Competition (MAPSC). In the first step, 61 athletes and 39 coaches collaborated to conceptualize and develop preliminary items, resulting in five domains (psychological, physical, emotional, environmental, and informational preparation) and the creation of 52 preliminary items. The second step collected data from 608 student-athletes and utilized exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis to test internal validity. The MAPSC was structured to include five-factors and 25 items. Finally, the correlations between MAPSC, self-management, and sport confidence, as well as differences in MAPSC based on winning experience in national competitions, were tested. In conclusion, MAPSC has been developed and confirmed as a valid measurement for assessing competition preparation strategies in combat sport. Coaches and athletes can use this tool to prepare for competitions systematically and strategically.

Many college students are motivated to vote in presidential elections. Like most Americans, however, they are far less likely to vote in elections for local officeholders. Often this is because they have little to no information about the candidates. Starting in 2020, with university support, the author and a colleague began providing nonpartisan information about candidates for local offices in their county. Their website is available to students and voters throughout their county. More colleges and universities should undertake similar ventures, which would fill a vital and underserved public need, strengthen the civic behaviors of college students, and enhance democracy.

This article investigates the role of mandatory interim financial reporting in financial analysts' annual earnings forecast errors. We provide large-scale evidence from 49 countries that a mandatory quarterly (as compared to semi-annual) reporting regime is associated with lower analysts' annual earnings forecast errors. This conjecture is further supported when we exploit an exogeneous change in the mandatory frequency regime from a semi-annual to a quarterly reporting mandate in Japan. Consistent with an improvement in the information environment, our findings are more pronounced for firms and analysts subject to higher information acquisition costs and in countries where the institutional setting is less able to meet analysts' information needs. We corroborate this conjecture by documenting that more frequent mandatory reporting decreases analysts' forecast dispersion and improves the profitability of their stock recommendations. Overall, our findings extend the research on the role of the institutional setting in analysts' output, suggesting that the mandate of more frequent reporting improves analysts' forecasting process. ABSTRACT Aims Background Design Methods Results Conclusions Implications for Patient Care Patient or Public Contribution To examine the information needs of breast cancer patients during the initial phase of treatment and to analyse the factors that influenced these needs.Providing comprehensive and timely information during early breast cancer treatment is crucial for informed decision‐making and effective coping. Healthcare providers must address these needs to enhance patient support and improve outcomes.A cross‐sectional study was reported following the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guidelines.A total of 123 post‐mastectomy patients were selected through purposive sampling and completed the Thai version of the Sri Lankan Information Needs Assessment Questionnaire‐BC (SINAQ‐BC). Direct associations between demographic data and information needs were analysed descriptively, while bivariate analysis and linear regression were used to identify significant predictors of information needs.The findings revealed that patients exhibited high overall information needs (224.7/260.0), with the greatest demand focused on physical care, treatment and diagnosis. In contrast, needs related to disease specifics and psychosocial care were less prominent. A total of 94 respondents (76.4%) expressed a particularly high demand for information regarding physical care. Education level was identified as an influencing factor, accounting for 7.7% of the variance in information needs among women with breast cancer.Patients with higher education levels had significantly greater information needs. Nursing staff should provide customised information packages that are tailored to the participants' education levels. Further testing of the Thai version of the SLINQ‐BC would also be warranted.Patients are increasingly expected to manage their own care even as medical treatment grows more complex and technical. Considerable investment has been made in recent years to address sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment by aid workers in the humanitarian sector. However, such sexual misconduct remains a persistent, complex challenge with wide-ranging impacts, including on sexual health, for individuals and communities hosting humanitarian responses. This article considers the state of research regarding sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment in humanitarian contexts, and identifies gaps in the evidence base necessary for reinforcing prevention and response efforts. We first report what we know about sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment, including its impacts on sexual health, risk factors and the permissive enabling organizational cultures. We then identify several critical knowledge gaps that must be addressed for more effective future strategies and approaches to prevent and respond to sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment. We discuss system-wide knowledge gaps, such as lack of evidence on programming approaches and effectiveness of prevention and accountability mechanisms. We explore potential options that health-care programming provides for preventing and responding to sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment. We also describe population-level knowledge gaps, including in patterns of perpetration and specific challenges faced by marginalized groups. Aims: This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a web application on health literacy and self‐efficacy in managing arm oedema symptoms among patients with breast cancer. Methods: The research was carried out in four phases as follows: Phase 1, using a qualitative approach to explore problems and information needs in educating breast cancer patients through in‐depth interviews with 10 professional nurses who had experiences in caring for breast cancer patients and 20 breast cancer patients. Data were analysed by content analysis; Phase 2, designing and developing a web application and confirming its quality by five experts with experience caring for breast cancer patients; Phase 3, testing the web application with five breast cancer patients; and Phase 4, examining the effectiveness of a web application in breast cancer patients using a quasiexperimental research method. Patients were divided into 15 persons in control and 15 in intervention groups, a total of 30 persons. The tools used in the study consisted of (1) a web application on practices for reducing risk for arm oedema after breast cancer treatment, (2) a health literacy assessment tool, (3) a self‐efficacy for managing symptoms questionnaire and (4) a web application satisfaction questionnaire. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, chi‐square and t test. Results: Qualitative findings: The web application should cover patients' and nurses' views on arm oedema causes, assessment, prevention and self‐care for managing swelling after breast cancer treatment. Characteristics of a web application required: large text, bright colours, clear visibility, accompanying pictures or videos, using simple language without official terminology, easy to access, convenient to use, concise, interesting content and shareable to others. Quantitative findings: The intervention group had significantly higher health literacy and self‐efficacy in managing symptom scores than before the trial (p < 0.001). Sample groups were satisfied with the developed web application at a high level. When considering each item, it was found that all items were rated at high levels. Two items with the same highest score were ease of use and the attractiveness of the presentation style. Conclusion: This web application, aimed at reducing the risk of arm oedema after breast cancer treatment, is an effective tool for educating all hospitalized patients. In addition, further research should be conducted to monitor the sustainability of long‐term and clinical outcomes. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Introduction: Visiting a patient's living environment is important for occupational therapists, albeit costly and time consuming. MapIt is a mobile app producing a 3D representation of a home with the possibility of taking measurements. The purpose of this study was to explore the utility of a 3D representation of a patient's home for the clinical practice of occupational therapists. Methods: Case study in which the unit of analysis was the utility of MapIt as defined by ISO 9241‐11:2018 and as perceived by occupational therapists in four different occupational therapy clinical settings (Canada). Onsite observations with 10 occupational therapists (and their patients) were triangulated with data from interviews, diaries, and logbooks. Inductive thematic condensation led to emerging conclusions for each clinical setting, fuelling the next case data collection and analysis. Inter‐case analysis was corroborated by additional occupational therapists, through crowdsourcing and expert review. Results: Occupational therapists' clinical reasoning was supported by the MapIt app, enhancing and streamlining their work and inducing adjustments to treatment plans. Occupational therapists saw and measured the patient's environment remotely, to better match person‐environment‐occupation and promote occupational engagement. MapIt's 3D representations were judged useful to communicate between occupational therapists and stakeholders, to educate, allow continuity, optimise resources, minimise the patient's time on a waitlist for homecare, and save time for everyone. Discussion: MapIt allowed occupational therapists who performed home visits to bring a little of the patients' home to their office, whereas occupational therapists without access to the home could see it and take measurements. MapIt's utility was confirmed for practice in clinical settings and for better continuity of care between settings. Conclusion: MapIt makes it possible for occupational therapists to 'walk around' the patient's home remotely, but the possibility of measuring environmental elements is a 3D model's true added value over currently used photos or short videos. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: This study explored how a mobile app called MapIt could help occupational therapists in their work. Visiting a patient's home takes a lot of time. This app creates a 3D model of a room, making it easier for occupational therapists to see and measure the home environment remotely. The research was conducted with 10 occupational therapists working in four different contexts in Quebec, Canada. Researchers studied how useful MapIt was to the occupational therapists. The latter each used MapIt with their patients, kept track of their experience in a diary and were interviewed throughout the duration of the study. The results showed that MapIt helped occupational therapists in understanding their patients' living environment and planning treatments accordingly. Occupational therapists who could not visit the homes in person found it useful. The 3D models created by MapIt were also judged helpful for communicating with other people involved in the patient's care, like family members or other health‐care professionals. MapIt could make occupational therapy more efficient and help patients get the care they need faster. Overall, the researchers concluded that MapIt is a useful tool for occupational therapists. Personalized recommendation plays a crucial role in Internet platforms, providing users with tailored content based on their user models and enhancing user satisfaction and experience. To address the challenge of information overload, it is essential to analyze user needs comprehensively, considering historical behavior and interests and the user's intentions and profiles. Previous user modeling approaches for personalized recommendations have exhibited certain limitations, relying primarily on historical behavior data to infer user preferences, which results in challenges such as the cold-start problem, incomplete modeling, and limited explanation. Motivated by recent advancements in large language models (LLMs), we present a novel approach to user modeling by embracing generative user modeling using LLMs. We propose generative user modeling with chain-of-thought prompting for personalized recommendation, which utilizes LLMs to generate comprehensive and accurate user models expressed in natural language and then employs these user models to empower LLMs for personalized recommendation. Specifically, we adopt the chain-of-thought prompting method to reason about user attributes, subjective preferences, and intentions, integrating them into a holistic user model. Subsequently, we utilize the generated user models as input to LLMs and design a collection of prompts to align the LLMs with various recommendation tasks, encompassing rating prediction, sequential recommendation, direct recommendation, and explanation generation. Extensive experiments conducted on real-world datasets demonstrate the immense potential of large language models in generating natural language user models, and the adoption of generative user modeling significantly enhances the performance of LLMs across the four recommendation tasks. In recent years, there has been growing scientific interest in the neuropsychophysiological aspects of soccer performance. The purpose of this study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis to identify and review key topics within the neuropsychophysiological dimensions of soccer performance and identify any research voids that warrant further attention. We retrieved 192 documents from the Scopus database and anayzed the extracted data using VOSviewer software to conduct a bibliometric analysis. We applied both performance analysis techniques (including the number of documents per year, top 20 authors by citations, and top 15 sources by documents) and science mapping analysis (co-authorship, bibliographic coupling, co-citation, and co-occurrence). The co-occurrence analysis identified three main clusters of research themes. The first cluster focused on the relationship between physical performance and cognitive factors, the second on technical-tactical performance, and the third on health and well-being. Our findings emphasize the significant role of neuropsychophysiological factors in all aspects of soccer performance. We highlight the importance of integrating cognitive and physical training to enhance player performance and underscore the need for further research to deepen our understanding of these relationships. Special education as an organized, legislatively mandated entity is roughly 50 years old in many parts of the world. Most schools around the world continue to struggle to provide inclusive education for students with disabilities, sharing common barriers and experiencing their own unique barriers. This commentary discusses international initiatives that have focused on inclusive education and proposes a fourth generation of inclusive practices that align with worldwide changes in the education system. This narrative review aims to present and discuss the Norwegian school system as a context for inclusive education. Despite its clear political intentions, Norway lacks a common definition of inclusion and has limited insight into the quality of inclusive practices that are commonly implemented for students with special education needs (SEN) and the results of such practices. This study reveals that students with SEN are often educated in segregated settings and by staff lacking educational competence. Hence, future policy actions should prioritize the development of a common terminology and a report system that includes students with SEN. As SEN resources in Norway are allocated based on a lack of satisfactory learning outcomes from mainstream education and often result in segregated actions, an increased focus on school society, learning environments, educational practices, and individual learning outcomes is required. We describe the gap between parents' special education needs and pediatric primary care providers' (PCPs) ability to address those needs from a mixed-methods study at a safety-net hospital. We conducted qualitative interviews with English- and Spanish-speaking parents (n = 25) and PCPs (n = 11) about special education knowledge and experience and interactions with a primary care–embedded special education clinic. PCPs also answered survey questions on these topics. Parents reported four challenges: (1) knowing where to start and how to advocate for their youth, (2) being heard or having a say, (3) using the "right" language, and (4) gathering information on special education resources. Primary care providers disclosed three barriers: (1) training, (2) knowledge to assess the appropriateness of supports, and (3) time to address concerns. The gap between PCPs and parents was bridged by the special education clinic. Systematic interventions can ensure that PCPs help parents address the special education needs of their patients. Background: Limited research has looked at the present‐day sleep problems among Chinese children with Down syndrome (DS). This study aimed to investigate the situation of the sleep problems of school‐aged children with DS in northern China. Methods: Parents of children with DS were a convenience sample recruited through the special education schools of Shandong Province in China. The Chinese version of the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire was applied to assess the sleep problems of children with DS. Results: Parents of 334 children with DS reported the average sleep duration was 9.7 (9.3–10.2) hours per night, and 62.0% of children with DS were reported sleeping less than 10 h per night. Additionally, the total prevalence rate of sleep problems among children with DS was 69.8%. Sleep‐disordered breathing (59.2%), sleep duration (33.8%) and bedtime resistance (32.0%) were the three most commonly reported sleeping problems. Younger children with DS (age 6–8 years) had severe problems with bedtime resistance, sleep anxiety and parasomnias than older children with DS (age 9–12 years) (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: Sleep problems are prominent among children with DS in northern China and are worthy of attention. Caregivers and health professionals should raise awareness of sleep problems in this group of children and implement targeted interventions to improve their sleep quality as early as possible. Decisions in agriculture are increasingly data-driven. However, valuable agricultural knowledge is often locked away in free-text reports, manuals and journal articles. Specialised search systems are needed that can mine agricultural information to provide relevant answers to users' questions. This paper presents AgAsk—an agent able to answer natural language agriculture questions by mining scientific documents. We carefully survey and analyse farmers' information needs. On the basis of these needs, we release an information retrieval test collection comprising real questions, a large collection of scientific documents split in passages, and ground truth relevance assessments indicating which passages are relevant to each question. We implement and evaluate a number of information retrieval models to answer farmers questions, including two state-of-the-art neural ranking models. We show that neural rankers are highly effective at matching passages to questions in this context. Finally, we propose a deployment architecture for AgAsk that includes a client based on the Telegram messaging platform and retrieval model deployed on commodity hardware. The test collection we provide is intended to stimulate more research in methods to match natural language to answers in scientific documents. While the retrieval models were evaluated in the agriculture domain, they are generalisable and of interest to others working on similar problems. Introduction: Many people who smoke cigarettes report believing that nicotine causes cancer, a misperception that may reduce interest in switching to noncombustible nicotine products. Quantitative survey questions do not capture how this population thinks about nicotine and switching to noncombustible products. Methods: This study used an online convenience sample of 193 US adults who smoke cigarettes and reported that nicotine causes cancer. Respondents were asked if they thought nicotine was harmful (and why or why not) and if they would consider switching to a noncombustible product (and why or why not). Inductive and deductive coding were used, and descriptive statistics are reported. Results: Descriptions of nicotine directly causing disease (61%) were more common than descriptions of nicotine causing addiction to a harmful product (8%). One-third expressly stated that nicotine causes cancer, and 21% that nicotine causes lung disease. Interest in switching was moderate (mean 47.4 out of 100). When asked about switching, 34% described enjoying their current smoking experience, 23% described a perceived health benefit, 16% described a health concern, and 11% worried that switching would not address nicotine addiction. Discussion: Adults who smoke commonly perceived nicotine as a direct cause of cigarette-related disease, and harm and addictiveness perceptions were often mentioned as reasons for interest or disinterest in switching to a noncombustible. One subgroup of Latinos whose healthcare needs must be more thoroughly addressed is the roughly three million farmworkers pursuing seasonal agricultural work within the United States (U.S.). Latino migrant and seasonal farmworkers (MSFW) face compounded political, social, and personal contexts that complicate healthcare access. Although the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine prevents HPV infections and cancers, uptake among Hispanic adolescents remains suboptimal. Therefore, it is important to understand Latino MSFW's HPV knowledge, as well as barriers to and facilitators of vaccination so culturally appropriate measures can bolster vaccination. An integrative review was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science using key search terms. Results were evaluated for compatibility with inclusion/exclusion criteria, and selected articles were coded and evaluated via thematic analysis. Six studies of various designs were ultimately included in the review. While some Latino MSFW have baseline knowledge about HPV and the vaccine, knowledge gaps remain. Participants expressed curiosity about how the vaccine works, contents, side effects, dosing, recommended age, and information about prevented diseases. Although additional education and MSFW's receptiveness to provider's recommendations were cited as major facilitators, many barriers also need addressed. Providers must leverage MSFW's existing knowledge, provide education, and facilitate vaccination to protect farmworker families from HPV and related cancers. It must become standard practice for providers to recommend the HPV vaccine to MSFW, who are receptive to this conversation. The emergency resuscitation nurse is a challenging and specialised role at the forefront of critical care practice in the emergency department. Despite their extensive specialist knowledge and skill requirements, in Australia there is no state-wide or nationally agreed approach to how to best provide training that meets a set of fixed objectives and requisite skills for resuscitation nurses. Due to an ageing nursing population and increasing workforce attrition, an efficacious accelerated pathway to acquire specialist resuscitation nursing knowledge, is necessary. The aim of this review is to identify, consolidate and summarise the available evidence on the training needs for the requisite clinical and non-technical skills of emergency resuscitation nurses Papers about nurses currently working in the emergency department; including Nurse Unit Managers (NUMs), Clinical Nurse Educators (CNEs), Clinical Nurse Consultants (CNCs), Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs), Registered Nurses (RNs) and Enrolled Nurses (ENs) were included. The review included primary and non-primary research, including papers addressing how emergency nurses are trained. There was no date limitation set to ensure all results could be reviewed. Papers that were not published in English, included nurses who were not working in the ED, or included doctors, allied health, and other staff where population cohorts could not be distinguished, were excluded. Abstract only, editorials, conference posters or oral presentations, were also excluded. Searches were conducted in MEDLINE, CINAHL and EMCARE. The authors conducted extensive hand-searching of the included study reference lists as well as the grey literature to ensure that all relevant literature was captured. A scoping literature review was conducted. Data extraction was conducted on the final 33 articles (23 peer reviewed studies and 10 competency and practice standards documents). Specific training requirements to achieve competence in the requisite clinical and non-technical skills in resuscitation nursing do not exist. A decline in competency without regular reinforcement was reported. Multi-modal approaches, incorporating diverse teaching methods, show potential in enhancing knowledge retention and skill acquisition. Resuscitation nursing lacks a standardised training approach in Australia, leading to a gap in ensuring consistent skill acquisition and knowledge among nurses. The 50th anniversary of the Journal of Gerontological Nursing is a milestone that calls for reflection on the many important contributions made by our clinicians, educators, and researchers to the care of older adults. This article was written to highlight not only the issues that have been the focus of our professional attention but also the accomplishments that gerontological nurses have made during the past half century. Edna Stilwell, the inaugural editor, laid out nine objectives for the journal in the first issue, which was published in 1975. Using those objectives as a lens to our past, the >400 editorials written from 1975 to the present are summarized and discussed using the framework Stilwell provided. The gerontological nurses who wrote these editorials were visionaries whose efforts advanced and continue to advance the quality of care that nurses provide to older adults today. Online reading for academic purposes is a complex and challenging activity that involves analysing task requirements, assessing information needs, accessing relevant contents, and evaluating the relevance and reliability of information given the task at hand. The present study implemented and tested an analytical approach to strategy training that combined a detailed, step-by-step presentation of each strategy with the integration of various strategies across modules and practice tasks. One hundred sixty-seven university students were assigned to either a treatment or a control condition. The training program was implemented as part of a digital literacy course. Instructors received background information and instructional materials prior to the beginning of the term. The intervention improved students' performance on a set of search and evaluation tasks representative of the target skills, although to varying extent. The impact was higher for evaluation than for search skills, in terms of accuracy and quality of students' justifications. The data provides initial evidence that an analytical approach may foster university students' use of advanced reading strategies in the context of online reading. Background: Young adults living with kidney failure make decisions to select a kidney replacement therapy choice in partnership with healthcare professionals. However, little is known about how they experience kidney replacement therapy treatment decision‐making and the impact this has on their well‐being. Objectives: To explore young adults living with kidney failure experiences of treatment decision‐making. The treatment decision‐making investigated is about the choice of dialysis and/or kidney transplant options. Design: A qualitative interpretive hermeneutic phenomenology study. Participants: Purposeful sampling was used to recruit young adults with kidney failure from social media, electronic media such as local kidney group websites and word of mouth. Semistructured interviews were conducted with (n = 18) participants aged 18–30 years. Approach: Inductive analysis of the data were performed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis framework. Findings: The five themes generated were (1) awareness and anticipation of future kidney replacement therapy decision; (2) health information and education; (3) engaging in decision‐making, support and choices; (4) implementation of kidney replacement therapy and transitioning into the new normal life and (5) the impact of decision‐making and choice on well‐being. Conclusions: Decision‐making significantly affected young adults' psychosocial and mental well‐being. Young adults had unmet informational and decisional needs and struggled to cope due to lack of support. A four‐talk model, with an implement talk phase added to the existing three‐talk (team talk, option talk, decision talk) shared decision‐making model, would promote a focus on the implementation of choice and support the transitioning from previous life to long‐term dependence on treatment. This paper describes the findings of a research project conducted in six adult prisons in New South Wales, Australia that sought to study the information needs and information seeking practices of adult Australian prisoners. Through data gathered from 106 prisoner surveys, the paper identifies the information needs of Australian adult prisoners across six information domains: legal, education, spirituality, health, prison life, and re-integration. For each information domain, participants were asked to identify their preferred source or sources of information from eight possible information sources: prison libraries, tablet devices, staff, family/friends, health services, television/radio, books etc. not from the prison library, or other. The number and nature of unmet information needs are also explored and described. The data gathered enables a study of the different information needs and behaviours of female and male prisoners, and prisoners from across various security levels. The paper finds a significant level of unmet information need in the lives of Australian adult prisoners across all information domains studied. Prisoners are heavily reliant on sources of information that are likely to be non-expert such as custodial staff, other inmates, and family and friends to attempt to meet their information needs about significant critical issues such as their ongoing legal matters and their health. The information needs are similar for female and male prisoners, however their information seeking practices differ, with male prisoners being more likely to have support from family and friends as information sources than female prisoners. Prisoners living in minimum security prisons are least likely to identify a need for spirituality-related information compared with prisoners living in other security classifications and are most likely to seek information regarding their reintegration back into their communities as they plan for their release. Background: The majority of women in low- and middle-income countries have low awareness of cervical cancer. This study sought to establish awareness of cervical cancer risk factors and preventive approaches, as well as sources of information and perceived causes of cervical cancer among secondary school girls in northern Uganda. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in rural northern Uganda. We collected data using an investigator administered pre-tested questionnaire. Analysis was done with STATA version 14.0. Multivariate analyses with logistic regressions models were used to determine magnitudes of association between independent and outcome variables. Odds ratios and accompanying 95% confidence intervals are reported. Statistical significance was considered if the two sided p-value <.05. Results: Most participants (97%; n = 624) had heard of cervical cancer before this study. The most common source of information about cervical cancer was friends (31.1%; n = 194). More than half of the participants (59%; n = 380) had heard about a vaccine that prevents cervical cancer, but only a third (33%; n = 124) had ever received a dose of the vaccine. The majority of participants (89%; n = 550) reported that cervical cancer could be prevented; however only half (52%; n = 290) knew that vaccination of girls aged 9-13 years could prevent cervical cancer. The majority of participants did not recognize the risk factors for cervical cancer; for example, only 15% (n = 98), 7% (n = 45), and 1.4% (n = 9) recognized early onset of sexual intercourse, infection by the human papillomavirus (HPV), and smoking respectively. On adjusting for age, students' class, and religion, students in schools with school health programs were twice (aOR = 2.24: 95%CI; 1.24-4.06) more likely to know that cervical cancer is preventable. Conclusion: Secondary school girls need information on cervical cancer risk factors and approaches to prevention so that they may avoid exposures to the risk factors and promptly seek and undertake preventive approaches including HPV vaccinations. Aim: This study aimed to determine the effect of social media-supported learning on the academic achievement of nursing students and their social media usage levels in nursing education. Background: Using social media in nursing education enables students to experience interactive learning, strengthening learning outcomes and creating an enriched learning environment with up-to-date information. Method: The study was conducted as a randomized controlled study. CONSORTchecklist was completed. The subject of parenteral drug administration was explained interactively to all students by the same instructors for a total of 12 h for weeks. After the theoretical course, each skill was demonstrated by the instructor in the laboratory setting in a 24-h laboratory course with the demonstration method in line with the checklists. After the training was completed, the students filled out the necessary forms. Videos and informative images about parenteral drug applications were shared with the intervention group for 4 weeks through an Instagram page created for social media-supported learning. Questions and answers were shared on the subject every day in the story section. The answer to the question was shared in the story section the next day with explanations. At the end of the 4th training week, the students were asked to complete the necessary forms as a post-test. Changes in academic achievement and social media usage after the intervention were measured using achievement tests and the Social Media Scale in Nursing Education. Data were analyzed with SPSS 23.0. Normality was tested using the Shapiro–Wilk test. Independent t-tests and the Chi-Square test for categorical variables were used for normally distributed continuous variables. Pre-test and post-test comparisons within groups were evaluated with the Paired t-test if normality was met, or the Wilcoxon test. The effect size was calculated using Cohen's d. Results: After social media-supported learning, it was found that the difference between the post-test mean scores of the nursing students in the intervention and control group was statistically significant(p < 0.001). It was also found that the average of the exam results after the training increased compared to the average before the training, and the difference between the two scores was statistically significant(p < 0.001). Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination is an emerging environmental and public health crisis. Thus, it is crucial to understand public risk perception and communication behaviors surrounding this issue. Guided by the heuristic-systematic model of information processing, this study explores the impact of conflicting information and personal relevance on information insufficiency and information processing. Through an online experiment, 1,062 U.S. adults were randomly assigned to one of four conditions as part of a 2 (information type: conflicting vs. consistent) × 2 (personal relevance: high vs. low) between-subjects factorial design. Both main effect and interaction effect were detected. Specifically, information insufficiency was highest among participants in the high personal relevance and consistent information condition. Personal relevance also had a main effect on information processing. Conflicting information indirectly elevated information processing through increased information insufficiency, but only when personal relevance was low. These findings suggest the importance of providing consistent and personally relevant information related to the risk of PFAS contamination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose a theoretical framework that identifies (a) the different categories of stakeholders and (b) the normative values that drive their attitudes toward direct-to-consumer genetic testing, with an emphasis on the reproductive health contexts. We conducted a literature search using varied combinations of search terms, including direct-to-consumer genetic testing, decision-making, reproductive health, and policy. Using a grounded theory approach to existing literature and in combination with a narrative review, we present a systematic framework of five categories of stakeholders (i.e., genome-driven stakeholders, industry-driven stakeholders, history-driven stakeholders, value-driven stakeholders, and social justice-driven stakeholders) that shape the public's discourse. Moving beyond the dialectical ethics that have governed the public discourse, we also identify the normative values and interests that motivate different stakeholders' attitudes and decision-making through theoretical sampling under the grounded theory. We investigate the competing and conflicting values within the same category of stakeholders. For example, despite being industry-driven stakeholders, medical professionals' attitudes are driven by concerns about standards of care; in contrast, health insurance companies' concerns are centered on profit. We further explore the tensions between these stakeholders that impact their strategic alliances and pose challenges to the practices of direct-to-consumer genetic testing. Finally, we examine how these stakeholders and their corresponding values may shape future development and policies of direct-to-consumer genetic testing in the context of reproductive health. Background: Family and Community Nurse specialists are advocates of a holistic model of care in multidisciplinary primary care teams. This study aims to describe the experiences and perceptions of nurses specialising in Family and Community Nursing regarding their working conditions in primary care in Spain. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted. Eighteen family and community specialist nurses from different autonomous communities in Spain participated. Individual interviews and a focus group were conducted. Results: The results identified two main themes: The current work situation of the Family and Community Nursing specialist and Support network and system of rejection with four sub-themes highlighting the lack of social and work recognition, the advantages of working with Family and Community Nursing specialists, systematic ambivalence towards Family and Community Nursing, and the need for institutional support. The inclusion of Family and Community Nursing specialists in primary care teams favours the nurse–patient bond, increases and/or maintains the quality of life of patients, and strengthens their empowerment; however, there is an absence of specific job vacancies. Conclusions: The institutional and social lack of awareness about the roles of Family and Community nurse practitioners and their impact on health care systems limits the quality of patient care in primary care. Background: Learning Networks are increasingly used to educate clinicians and disseminate information to health professionals. During the height of the second COVID-19 lockdown in Victoria, Australia, COVID+ Learning Network webinars were introduced as a mechanism for disseminating emerging evidence and up-to-date information to health service managers, and primary care and community healthcare clinicians, and for obtaining feedback from the healthcare sector. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study design was used to explore the COVID+ Learning Network webinars from users' perspectives. Fifteen webinar participants from different professional backgrounds, roles during the COVID-19 pandemic, and geographic locations were individually interviewed. Results: The webinars attracted state-wide engagement and participants described them as an effective way to inform and support health services, and primary care and community healthcare clinicians. However, data analysis revealed important considerations for using Learning Networks to disseminate information in the future. In particular, the importance of tailoring the webinars to address the specific needs of the different participant groups was highlighted. Conclusion: Health service managers, and primary care and community healthcare clinicians, require information pertinent to their specific roles, with consideration of geographic and socio-economic factors important to planning webinar content. Background: Cancer remains a global health concern, with nearly 20 million new cancer cases and approximately 10 million cancer-related deaths reported in 2020.An increasing number of individuals with advanced-stage cancer are likely to confront the reality of mortality.In China, cancer-related deaths hold the top position among factors contributing to resident mortality, accounting for nearly a quarter of all deaths. Patients with advanced-stage cancer contend with both physical challenges such as pain, physical decline, and functional impairments, as well as psychological issues including death anxiety, fear of death, and feelings of meaninglessness and hopelessness during disease treatment. Death education serves as a method to educate patients on coping with death, alleviating death-related anxieties and fears, and approaching death calmly, thereby facilitating a peaceful end-of-life experience. Currently, there is a dearth of death education content tailored to patients'specific circumstances in China. Consequently, this study aims to explore the content of death education needs among patients with advanced-stage cancer in China. Methods: A qualitative research based on phenomenology was used to select 19 patients with advanced cancer from November 2022 to June 2023. Semi-structured interviews were used to interview, and Colaizzi 7-step analysis method was used to organize and analyze the data. Results: Six themes were extracted: 1. Death cognition and education; 2. Life review; 3. Ethics of death; 4. End-of-life decision-making; 5. Social support; 6. Disease treatment. Conclusions: Patients with advanced-stage cancer face significant distress caused by their illness and the prospect of death. This distress can impact their quality of life and even influence treatment decisions. It's essential to comprehensively assess the current state and needs of patients, engaging in ongoing interventions tailored to individual patient circumstances. This approach involves implementing targeted death education content and methods. When executing death education, it's imperative to consider the patient's knowledge framework and their level of acceptance. Integrating the patient's disease progression and treatment, as well as addressing their negative emotional states, becomes crucial for enhancing the patient's overall well-being and quality of life. Background: In recent years, limited studies have evaluated the development of cultural awareness, sensitivity, skills, communication and competence among nursing students using different models and curricula. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a new internationally developed curriculum for transcultural nursing education. Methods: This mixed methods study was conducted on nursing students (n = 83) who attended a transcultural nursing course from 2021 to 2022 during the fall semester. A paired samples test was used to compare total scores, and the related-samples Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare subscale scores. Results: The vast majority (94.0%) of the participants mentioned Islam as their religion. Turkish was the mother tongue of 91.6% of them, while 10.8% were able to speak English and 6.0% were able to speak Kurdish fluently. The mean score for the achievement of cultural competence subdimension posttest was significantly greater (p < 0.001). Posttest mean scores for challenges and barriers in providing culturally competent care subdimensions were significantly lower (p = 0.003). The mean score on the culturally sensitive communication subdimension pretest was 21.00 ± 4.76, and the mean score on the posttest increased to 23.02 ± 6.05, which was a statistically significantly greater difference (p = 0.024). According to the qualitative results of our study, five main themes were analyzed: transcultural nursing as an opportunity, transcultural nursing as a didactic process, transcultural nursing as a professional field, transcultural care as a safe environment, and transcultural care as an obligation. Conclusions: In this study, after a semester of continuing education, nursing students developed respect for cultural diversity, cultural competence, and culturally sensitive communication. Society is experiencing a global shift in which older people now outnumber children five years and younger in many countries. This demographic aging has profound implications for library and information professionals, and yet research into the information needs of older adults – especially from diverse backgrounds – remains underdeveloped. This study seeks to help address this gap by studying the aging-related information needs and barriers of LGBT+ older adults. Interviews with 25 LGBT+ older adults in East Tennessee were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify five need (e.g., culturally competent care, LGBT+ specific services, social support, planning, and caregiver services) and seven barrier (e.g., stigma, discrimination, fewer personal resources, identity concealment, staff limitations, personality, ageism and elder abuse) themes. Beyond the aging focus, the study brings attention to the need for more research on intersectional populations in general and offers one of the first – perhaps only – studies of the information needs of LGBT+ older adults. It also presents a challenge to librarians and other information professionals in considering how to fight inequities for intersectional populations. Background: Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) refers to the experience of visual hallucinations occurring secondary to sight loss. Although there is an increasing amount of research on this phenomenon, CBS remains a lesser-known outcome of visual impairment, with limited research into the impact on the patient. Objectives: To explore the experiences and opinions of visually impaired military veterans with CBS regarding the impact of visual hallucinations. Design: Semi-structured qualitative interviews. Methods: Forty-six telephone interviews were conducted with members of Blind Veterans UK, a charity for visually impaired ex-service men and women. One-hundred and fifteen individuals at the charity with CBS were identified and invited to a semi-structured interview (participation rate – 40%). Qualitative data was transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Four overarching themes were identified: (1) impact of CBS (2) understanding and management of CBS (3) awareness of CBS (4) recommendations. Negative impact of CBS included feelings of fear, annoyance and disruptions to daily life and quality of life. Negative appraisal of CBS was not necessarily related to negative hallucination content. Participants expressed the value of increased awareness amongst patients and health care professionals. Knowledge and understanding of CBS provided reassurance and was considered an effective strategy to mitigate the negative impact of the condition. Conclusion: Regardless of hallucination content, CBS has a substantial impact on the lives of people with visual impairment. Increased awareness and information can help to support individuals to manage their CBS more effectively. However, the findings from this study cannot be generalized to people without a military background so further research is required to understand and optimize support for military veterans and civilians with CBS. The world is not on track to reach the majority of the UNAIDS 2025 targets, and people who inject drugs (PWID) continue to be left behind, hindered by counterproductive law enforcement practices, punitive laws, economic distress, and social stigma and discrimination. Poor access to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among PWID is nested within the limited access to broader harm reduction services, including needle and syringe programs, opioid overdose management, opioid agonist therapy (also known as medication-assisted treatment), and condoms. Among PWID, women who inject drugs are disproportionately affected and face additional gender-based barriers. Intersections between PWID and other key and priority population groups also exist. Although the prioritization of PWID for new PrEP products like the dapivirine vaginal ring and injectable cabotegravir has lagged in research, studies have shown that PWID find injectable and long-acting options acceptable and preferrable, including among women who inject drugs. While new PrEP products introduce new opportunities, equity in access must be assured for optimized impact toward achieving epidemic control. Programming for services must engage and empower PWID community leadership to address the structural barriers to services, implement community-led, differentiated, and integrated service modalities, and offer the choice of all harm reduction options to close the equity gaps in health outcomes. While waiting for necessary evidence and approvals, programs should work together with the PWID community to prioritize, expand, and facilitate efforts and investments toward increased access to and integration of PrEP and all recommended harm reduction services for PWID. Upgrades to advanced scientific user facilities such as next-generation x-ray light sources, nanoscience centers, and neutron facilities are revolutionizing our understanding of materials across the spectrum of the physical sciences, from life sciences to microelectronics. However, these facility and instrument upgrades come with a significant increase in complexity. Driven by more exacting scientific needs, instruments and experiments become more intricate each year. This increased operational complexity makes it ever more challenging for domain scientists to design experiments that effectively leverage the capabilities of and operate on these advanced instruments. Large language models (LLMs) can perform complex information retrieval, assist in knowledge-intensive tasks across applications, and provide guidance on tool usage. Using x-ray light sources, leadership computing, and nanoscience centers as representative examples, we describe preliminary experiments with a Context-Aware Language Model for Science (CALMS) to assist scientists with instrument operations and complex experimentation. With the ability to retrieve relevant information from facility documentation, CALMS can answer simple questions on scientific capabilities and other operational procedures. With the ability to interface with software tools and experimental hardware, CALMS can conversationally operate scientific instruments. Background: With growing reliance on family caregivers to support people with advanced heart failure and to help them die at home, family caregivers need the relevant information to support this. However, evidence has shown that families continue to have deficits in their knowledge of heart failure and what to expect as the disease advances. This can lead to a high level of uncertainty and stress for family. Aim: To explore family caregivers experiences of accessing information from healthcare professionals when caring for someone with heart failure. Method: A qualitative exploratory study design was adopted using a critical realist approach. The study was conducted in one large urban area of Aotearoa New Zealand. Participants were family caregivers of people who had died between April and November 2019. Data was collected using semi-structured telephone interviews. Results: A total of 15 family caregivers participated. A thematic analysis identified three themes related to accessing information from healthcare professionals: 1) gaining access to healthcare professionals 2) developing, understanding and translating information and 3) receiving information in a timely manner. Conclusions: Findings highlight the difficulites that family carers of people with heart failure experience in accessing, receiving and understanding the information they require. Further research is needed on supporting healthcare professionals to develop skills in appearing accessible within an environment of 'busyness'. Purpose: This study aims to evaluate students' satisfaction with university library services in southern Punjab, Pakistan, emphasizing their perspective on service quality (SQ). Design/methodology/approach: A LibQUAL+® survey with 22 core items was conducted within university settings using convenience sampling. In total, 345 usable responses were returned through Google Forms. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, ordinal logistic regression test, Pearson and Deviance statistics and chi-square test to assess the satisfaction status of library users. Findings: The study found that libraries generally meet SQ standards. However, there were minor gaps in information control (IC) and library as place (LP). Practical implications: The study provides library administrators with actionable insights to enhance services, encouraging stakeholders to adopt optimal library practices for heightened efficiency and user satisfaction. Social implications: It highlights the crucial role of libraries in shaping future societal progress by emphasizing the need for elevated user services. Librarians can use this knowledge to modify their planning and take impactful initiatives that align with the evolving needs of their users. Originality/value: While many studies have utilized LibQUAL, this research is unique for its focus on addressing university library services in underdeveloped regions facing economic challenges. Purpose: Talking book mobile applications have introduced the concept of reading through listening. Though conventional reading methods are preferable, talking book mobile applications have the advantage that they treat every user equally. The purpose of this paper is to compare the five popular talking book mobile applications namely Google Play Books, Audible, LibriVox, Storytel and Loyal Books. Design/methodology/approach: This research compares and evaluates features and functionalities of five different talking book mobile applications using a checklist method. A structured checklist is prepared to compare the five popular talking book mobile applications comprising 261 dichotomous questions divided into 13 categories. Findings: After evaluating the features, an attempt was made to rate the selected applications. According to the evaluation, Audible application performed better than others. This study about the features and functions of talking book mobile applications considered a total number of 261 features from the selected five mobile applications. Audible is ranked first with 182 (69.7%) features and is rated "Above average"; Storytel (68.2%) is second with 178 features, also rated "Above average"; Google Play Books ranked third with 161 (61.7%) features, rated "Average"; LibriVox ranked fourth with 151 (57.9%) features and is rated "Below average". Fifth is Loyal Books with 130 (49.8%) features, rated "Below average". Research limitations/implications: The study covers only five talking book mobile applications. The checklist used in the study is generic covering limited features. Further, the perceptions of users were also not included while comparing the talking book mobile applications. The study does not comprehend whether the talking book mobile applications fulfil the information needs of the users. Practical implications: Users can use the findings of the study in choosing the suitable talking book mobile application suitable to their requirements. Instructors of information literacy programmes can use the checklist to train the users in using talking book mobile applications that can accelerate the usage of these mobile applications. Originality/value: The study identifies the features that should be available in a model talking book mobile application. Features of the talking book mobile applications were evaluated after preparing the detailed checklist. Features were divided into 13 different categories. The checklist used in the study is original and the first of its kind. The findings of the study can be used by developers of talking book mobile applications to improve their functionalities.
