Francis Elliott's papers consist of letters (1866-1871) to his family discussing his experiences in Virginia City and Beartown, Montana Territory, where he was a miner, farmer, and freighter. Also included are three letters (1880-1881) to Elliott's brother, George, from Joseph Skettington concerning Elliott's death, burial, and estate., This collection consists of ten letters (1866-1871) from Frank Elliott in Montana to his family in Illinois. The letters describe the beauty of Montana, the physical hardships of the bitter winters, a planned civilian campaign against the Indians, and economic difficulties. The last letter in 1871 expresses considerable disillusionment with Montana. There are also three letters (1880-1881) to Elliott's brother from Joseph Skeffington of Bear Town, telling of Elliott's death in 1875. (Small Collection 660)

Henry D. Hauser traveled to Virginia City, Montana Territory, in 1865. His diary details his trip from Kentucky to Montana, life and work in Virginia City, and return trip to Cincinnati, Ohio. The volume also contains an account of travel and living expenses., The diary of Henry D. Hauser describes his train and stage trip (beginning in May 12, 1865) from St. Louis, Missouri, to Virginia City, Montana Territory, via Atchison, Kansas; Denver, Colorado; and Salt Lake City, Utah. After reaching Virginia City on June 18, 1865, Hauser describes his work for N.P. Langford looking at claims, writing deeds, collecting money; social activities including billiards and dancing; business associations with Judge Hezekiah Hosmer and Walter B. Dance; area robberies and hangings; etc. The regular diary entries end on December 21, 1865. Following that date there are scattered entries for 1866 and 1867. Beginning in November 1868 there are entries for a trip from Virginia City to Cincinnati. The diary also contains accounts of expenses during Hauser's trips and while living in Virginia City, and notes concerning rivers and Indian tribes in Montana Territory.

The program was directed by C. Gregory Crampton of the American West Center at the University of Utah. The interviews, now housed in the J. Willard Marriot Library, represent various Native American tribes from the intermountain region and non-indians who were closely associated with these tribes.

Stanley J. Morrow was a prominent photographer in the Dakota and Montana territories who operated from 1868 through 1882. This collection of seventy stereographs contains scenes photographed by Morrow between 1868 and 1881. It includes views of Morrow's home and studio in Yankton, D.T., military expeditions including views of General Crook's 1876 expedition against the Lakota Sioux and images of George K. Sanderson's cleanup of Little Bighorn Battlefield (1879), views of Fort Keogh (ca. 1878), and Indian portraits and village scenes., This collection of seventy stereographs contains scenes in the Dakota and Montana territories captured by Morrow between 1868 and 1881. It includes images of the Little Bighorn Battlefield including the marking of graves (1879); Crow, Cheyenne, Sioux, and Gros Ventre villages and portraits of individuals; views of soldiers returned from General Crook's expedition, including a soldier re-enacting shooting a horse for food and captured Sioux Indians (1876); the Morrow family, home and studio in Yankton, D.T., and steamboats (including the Helena) and an ice gorge from the Great Flood of 1881; officers quarters and troops at Ft. Keogh; the Gates of the Mountains, Prickly Pear Canyon, and other scenes in the vicinity of Helena, Montana.

This collection contains a few photographs of James Rankin, but the majority of the photographs are images of Charles M. Russell, Russell's family and friends, Russell's residences and studio, and people who knew Russell or collected his work. There are a few photographs of Russell's Native American friends and the Russells and their friends dressed in Indian costumes, and of the hearse at Russell's funeral.
