Purpose: This study aims to investigate the efficiency of Indian commercial banks from 2002 to 2018 using the stochastic frontier analysis. Design/methodology/approach: This study uses the parametric approach of the stochastic frontier to examine the technical efficiency of banks acknowledging exogenous shocks, omitted variables and measurement errors, filling a gap in the existing financial literature. The scope of this study was constrained to 71 scheduled commercial banks to make it manageable and productive with 1,036 observations. Findings: The results show that the mean technical efficiency of new private banks remained constant at 92.7% during the study period because of technology diffusion in banking systems. The technical efficiency of the nationalized, old private and foreign banks has enhanced over the period because of the efficient utilization of various innovative information technology services such as mobile banking, cheque truncation system, magnetic ink character recognition. However, the foreign banks are still laggards with a mean technical efficiency of 81.7%. The empirical findings suggest that new private sector banks depict higher efficiency than nationalized, old private and foreign banks. Research limitations/implications: This study's sample represents all categories of banks (public, private and foreign) including the banks that merged or consolidated during the period of study. To achieve the desired results, the authors incorporate the consolidated and merged banks in their data set. Further, the authors excluded all scheduled small finance banks and scheduled payment banks from their analysis, as these entities commenced operations post-2015. Additionally, the authors also excluded regional rural banks because of their distinct mandate aimed at servicing the rural populace and agricultural sector. Despite emergence of data markets such as Windows Azure Marketplace and India Urban Data Exchange (IUDX), comprehensive frameworks to determine data pricing and/or determine parameters for profit maximization remain a gap. Data valuation often gets guided by the sellers, ignoring the interests of the buyers. The information asymmetry results in lopsided pricing. The data sellers fail to price optimally, and the buyers are unable to optimize their purchasing decisions, thus, reinforcing the need for a structured data pricing framework. The paper reviews literature and applies the stages as reported by Ritchie and Spencer (in: Bryman, Burgess (eds) Analysing qualitative data, Routledge, London, 1994) for applied policy research to determine the main approaches of data pricing and develop a comprehensive pricing framework. Literature selection on pricing attributes and content analysis classifies data pricing models into five broad but distinct themes, based on the data pricing method, namely data characteristics-based pricing, quality-based pricing, query-based pricing, privacy-based pricing, and organizational value-based pricing. Application of the Ritchie and Spencer stages identifies eight factors, namely customer need, customer assigned value, market maturity, market structure, usable data, data quality, seller reputation and seller objectives as defining and intersecting with the five pricing models. The international geopolitical crisis and the rigid management system increase the risk of a mineral crisis in China, but the development of the digital economy provides a possibility for the efficient utilization of mineral resources. Based on the panel data of 30 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) from 2011 to 2022, this research measures the level of China's digital economy development and the utilization efficiency of mineral resources, and examines the transmission path of the digital economy development on the utilization efficiency of mineral resources by using the mediation effect model. The results show that (1) the development of the digital economy can significantly improve the utilization efficiency of mineral resources, and this conclusion is still valid after the instrumental variables method and other robustness tests. For every unit of progress in the development of the digital economy, mineral resource efficiency improves by 0.226. (2) The upgrading of industrial structure and technological progress play a mediating role in the digital economy and the improvement of mineral resource utilization efficiency. (3) The digital economy has a significant heterogeneous effect on the utilization efficiency of mineral resources in China's eastern, central, and western regions, with the most prominent positive effect in the central and western regions. This paper discusses the gendering of programmers' work in China at both the occupational and work organization levels: the dichotomy between social and technical aspects in programming work leads to a gendered hierarchical division of labor that undermines the legitimacy of women programmers' professional identities. Additionally, the combination of the overtime culture in technology companies and traditional gender role expectations makes women more likely to face work‒family conflicts. This paper uses the concept of embodiment to analyze women's experiences of exclusion and women's motivation to reconcile their gender and occupational identities and plan their career development. Background: As China's "Internet + Health" initiative advances, the digital economy significantly influences the quality of medical and health services. However, there is a research gap concerning the digital economy's specific impacts, mechanisms, and marginal effects on these services. This gap impedes a comprehensive understanding of the digital economy's potential in healthcare. Aims: This study aims to clarify the digital economy's impact mechanisms on medical and health services levels, offering a scientific foundation for more targeted and effective policy formulation, thereby fostering sustainable digital development in healthcare. Methods: Utilizing panel data from China's 31 provinces (2011–2020), this paper employs the Spatial Durbin Model to analyze the spatial and marginal effects of the digital economy on healthcare service levels. To ensure analysis accuracy and robustness, the study refines the spatial weight matrix and addresses model endogeneity using the Generalized Spatial Two-Stage Least Squares method. Additionally, it examines regional disparities in the digital economy's impact through SDM and explores intermediary mechanisms and threshold effects using a mediation effect model and a panel threshold model. Results: Findings indicate that the digital economy positively affects medical and health services in both local and neighboring regions, with variations across areas. The eastern region particularly benefits from the digital economy's enhancement of service levels, while the central and western regions see less impact. The digital economy enhances services by improving medical resource levels and promoting their coordinated development. However, this positive effect is moderated by the digital economy's and the region's economic development levels, with more pronounced impacts in regions with higher digital and economic development. Conclusions: The digital economy plays a crucial role in improving medical and health services, and its full potential is beneficial for the industry's advancement and sustainability. The rapid increase of fraud attacks on banking systems, financial institutions, and even credit card holders demonstrate the high demand for enhanced fraud detection (FD) systems for these attacks. This paper provides a systematic review of enhanced techniques using Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), and meta-heuristic optimization (MHO) algorithms for credit card fraud detection (CCFD). Carefully selected recent research papers have been investigated to examine the effectiveness of these AI-integrated approaches in recognizing a wide range of fraud attacks. These AI techniques were evaluated and compared to discover the advantages and disadvantages of each one, leading to the exploration of existing limitations of ML or DL-enhanced models. Discovering the limitation is crucial for future work and research to increase the effectiveness and robustness of various AI models. In the backdrop of "dual-carbon" strategic objectives, understanding the influence of the digital economy (DE) on carbon emissions (CEs) is imperative. However, there is limited research on the DE's negative impact on CEs and the nonlinear relationship between the DE and CE. To address this gap, we collected data from 270 Chinese cities from 2011 to 2021 and used benchmark regression, mediated effects, and panel threshold models to explore the DE's impact on CEs. The results showed that DE had a nonlinear, inverted U-shaped effect on CEs, with CEs initially increasing and then being suppressed. This conclusion remained consistent even after a series of robustness tests. Overall, the rate of urbanization and breadth of digital financial coverage mediate the relationship between the DE and CEs. Additionally, the combined effects of economic development, environmental regulation, fiscal decentralization, and population size contribute to the DE's nonlinear impact on CEs. The impact of the DE on CEs varies among nonresource-based, resource-based, and resource-depleted cities and between urban and nonurban agglomerations. The process of regional economic development is marked by a sustained exposure to external disturbances. In today's unpredictable and tumultuous global environment, such disturbances have become increasingly common, underlining the need to advance a region's economic resilience and foster adaptive mechanisms to handle environmental flux. Comparing the typical provinces in eastern, central, western and northeastern regions during the COVID-19 epidemic period, it found that the economic resilience performance of Henan Province, which is a representative of the central region, has the following characteristics. Henan Province has the lowest total production resilience in the selected regions, but it is in the second position in terms of development potential resistance, while it is in the middle range in terms of resilience performance, and it has a weaker resistance performance in terms of the resilience indicator of the standard of living of the residents. Against this backdrop, this study undertakes an analysis and comparison of the economic resilience indicators of the 18 cities in Henan Province to suggest several refinements. It urges a promotion of the integrated development of the primary, secondary, and tertiary industries through increasing emphasis on the industrial sector, which will enable a transformation of the sectoral structuring. Further, digitization can help the upgrading of industries' intelligence and function as a lever to raise their competitiveness. Innovation in enterprises is also crucial in enhancing industrial competitiveness, by bolstering the technological innovation capabilities of enterprises and simultaneously boosting the wage-based incomes of residents, resulting in an overall improvement in their standard of living. Purpose: As an important engine of economic growth, the digital economy is bringing new opportunities for the promotion of entrepreneurship. However, key questions regarding the extent of the effect of the digital economy on entrepreneurship remain unanswered. This study examines how the digital economy influences entrepreneurship in China using provincial data from 2011–2020, applying convergence tests and spatial econometric models. Design/methodology/approach: Based on theoretical analysis and using macro provincial data covering the period of 2011–2020, we adopt a diversified empirical analytical method and apply a combination of the convergence trend test, spatial auto correlation test, and spatial Durbin model to test the research hypotheses. Findings: First, there is spatial correlation between the digital economy and entrepreneurship. Second, the overall trend of China's digital economy shows s convergence, with the whole country and the eastern region showing absolute β convergence and the whole country as well as the central and western regions showing β conditional convergence. Third, the digital economy can significantly promote entrepreneurship and has spatial spillover effects. Moreover, higher education has a negative moderating effect on the process of digital economy empowering entrepreneurship. Research limitations/implications: Studying the spatially correlated impacts of the digital economy on entrepreneurship enhances our understanding of its contribution to economic growth. Policy-makers can use these findings to develop targeted digital infrastructure investments in lagging provinces, guide entrepreneurs to better grasp the opportunities of the digital economy, and provide support for innovation and entrepreneurship. The findings also could offer Chinese experience that can be used to guide developing countries in utilizing the digital economy to enable entrepreneurship. Using firm-level data in China from 2020 to 2021, this study uses text analysis and machine learning methods to construct an index of corporate digital innovation and examines the connection between judicial informatization and firms' digital innovation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our estimation finds that judicial informatization contributes to increasing firms' digital innovation, especially in the high-tech industry. The results remain unchanged under a series of robustness tests. These findings extend the existing research on the impact of judicial informatization and the determinants of firms' digital innovation, providing reference for firm executives and policy makers. Purpose: In the context of the severe global challenges posed by climate and environmental issues, this paper aims to explore the connection between female Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and the level of sustainable development in companies. This study aims to investigate the impact of female CEOs on corporate ESG performance and provide a detailed analysis of the underlying mechanisms. Design/methodology/approach: This study uses a sample of listed companies from 2010 to 2021, as reported by Bloomberg. This study uses logit regression models to test hypotheses and conduct robustness tests using the generalized method of moments, propensity score matching and heckman two statge tests. Findings: The research findings indicate that female CEOs can enhance a company's ESG performance, primarily by elevating the level of green innovation and engaging in more philanthropic activities. When environmental uncertainty is high, the risk-averse attitude of female CEOs may diminish the enhancement of ESG performance. However, granting a higher proportion of equity to female CEOs incentivizes risk-taking, thereby strengthening the improvement of ESG performance. Further analysis reveals that the impact of female CEOs on ESG performance is more significant in non-state-owned enterprises, high-pollution industries, and companies with low financing constraints. Research limitations/implications: The authors have shown that two key ways in which female CEOs enhance a company's ESG performance are by increasing the level of green innovation and assuming more social responsibility. Nonetheless, this remains a shortcoming of this work, opening a door for future research to examine and enrich. There may be other possible mechanisms explaining the influence of female CEOs on corporate ESG performance. More research is warranted about the CEO's additional traits, which were not considered in this study but may have an impact on a company's ESG performance. Finally, while the analysis has delved into the moderating effects of external factors such as environmental uncertainty and CEO ownership on the influence of female CEOs on corporate ESG performance, there is room for exploring whether other factors also play a moderating role in future studies. Practical implications: First, the findings of this study highlight the beneficial societal and economic effects of choosing female CEOs. The inclination to take on social responsibility and care for the environment are both higher among female CEOs. Furthermore, the authors have also discovered that female CEOs possess unique advantages in promoting corporate sustainability and enhancing ESG standards. This can contribute to breaking down stereotypes about gender roles in the workplace. Finally, this research shows that organizational heterogeneity and market risks have an impact on female CEOs' capacity to improve company ESG performance. Originality/value: A significant innovation of this paper lies in its unique focus on the connection between female CEOs and corporate ESG performance, along with the underlying mechanisms. Purpose: Ambient-assisted living (AAL) is one solution to the challenges of healthcare systems in an aging population. Using the "ecosystem adoption of practices over time" (EAPT) as a theoretical lens, this study explores and describes three elements of AAL adoption: (1) the AAL practices in which the technology is embedded (i.e. object of adoption), (2) the older adult's adoption ecosystem (i.e. subject of adoption) and (3) the change of adoption practices over time (i.e. temporality of adoption). Design/methodology/approach: Qualitative interviews with three actor groups in the ecosystem: clients, relatives and home nurses. Findings: The study identifies six categories of AAL practices. Clients, relatives and nurses interact and integrate their resources in carrying out these practices. Some of the practices have developed, or are expected to develop, over time. Originality/value: The study applies a novel theoretical perspective on how AAL technology is embedded in practices performed by different actors in the adoption ecosystem.
