Organic semiconductor materials are interesting due to their application in various organic electronics devices. [1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (BTBT) is a widely used building block for the creation of such materials. In this work, three novel solution-processable regioisomeric derivatives of BTBT—2,7-bis(3-octylthiophene-2-yl)BTBT (1), 2,7-bis(4-octylthiophene-2-yl)BTBT (2), and 2,7-bis(5-octylthiophene-2-yl)BTBT (3)—were synthesized and investigated. Their optoelectronic properties were characterized experimentally by ultraviolet–visible and fluorescence spectroscopy, time-resolved fluorimetry, and cyclic voltammetry and studied theoretically by Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory calculations. Their thermal properties were investigated by a thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, and in situ small-/wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements. It was shown that the introduction of alkyl substituents at different positions (3, 4, or 5) of thiophene moieties attached to a BTBT fragment significantly influences the optoelectronic properties, thermal stability, and phase behavior of the materials. Thin films of each compound were obtained by drop-casting, spin-coating and doctor blade techniques and used as active layers for organic field-effect transistors. All the OFETs exhibited p-channel characteristics under ambient conditions, while compound 3 showed the best electrical performance with a charge carrier mobility up to 1.1 cm2·V−1s−1 and current on/off ratio above 107. Epoxy resins are widely used in the manufacture of composite materials for a wide range of applications. Control of the curing process is an important consideration in ensuring product quality and minimizing production times. The curing of epoxy resin is associated with temperature, strain, and refractive index changes but it is difficult to monitor these quantities individually and hence difficult to achieve accurate control of the curing process. One promising approach for monitoring these quantities is the use of long-period fiber gratings (LPFG). We analyze the spectral response of a LPFG in epoxy resins to temperature, strain, and refractive index. Wavelength shifts and dip amplitudes of cladding mode notches are monitored and are used to decouple temperature, strain, and refractive index for gratings in air, liquid, and hardened resins. The three measurands are found from wavelength shifts and dip amplitudes, employing multiplication by a weighted pseudo-inverse matrix assuming linear dependences between the spectral and external parameters. We propose a new model to describe the influence of fiber parameters and external refractive index, temperature, and strain on the spectral behavior of long-period fiber gratings in epoxy resins during hardening. Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) is one of the most common causes of bacterial foodborne infections worldwide. It has an extensive host range, including birds and humans, making it one of the most adaptable Salmonella serovars. This study aims to define the virulence gene profile of S. Enteritidis and identify genes critical to its host specificity. Currently, there is limited understanding of the molecular mechanisms that allow S. Enteritidis to continue as an important foodborne pathogen. To better understand the genes that may play a role in the host-specific virulence and/or fitness of S. Enteritidis, we first compiled a virulence gene profile-based genome analysis of sequenced S. Enteritidis strains isolated from shell eggs in our laboratory. This analysis was subsequently used to compare the representative genomes of Salmonella serovars with varying host ranges and S. Enteritidis genomes. The study involved a comprehensive and direct examination of the conservation of virulence and/or fitness factors, especially in a host-specific manner—an area that has not been previously explored. Key findings include the identification of 10 virulence-associated clusters of orthologous genes (COGs) specific to poultry-colonizing serovars and 12 virulence-associated COGs unique to human-colonizing serovars. Virulence/fitness-associated gene analysis identified more than 600 genes. The genome sequences of the two S. Enteritidis isolates were compared to those of the other serovars. Genome analysis revealed a core of 2817 COGs that were common to all the Salmonella serovars examined. Comparative genome analysis revealed that 10 virulence-associated COGs were specific to poultry-colonizing serovars, whereas 12 virulence-associated COGs were present in all human-colonizing serovars. Phylogenetic analyses further highlight the evolution of host specificity in S. Enteritidis. This study offers the first comprehensive analysis of genes that may be unique to and possibly essential for the colonization and/or pathogenesis of S. Enteritidis in various and specific hosts. The clove (Syzygium aromaticum) is an important tropical spice crop in global trade. Evolving environmental pressures necessitate modern characterization and selection techniques that are currently inaccessible to clove growers owing to the scarcity of genomic and genetic information. Here, we present a 370-Mb high-quality chromosome-scale genome assembly for clove. Comparative genomic analysis between S. aromaticum and Eucalyptus grandis—both species of the Myrtaceae family—reveals good genome structure conservation and intrachromosomal rearrangements on seven of the eleven chromosomes. We report genes that belong to families involved in the biosynthesis of eugenol, the major bioactive component of clove products. On the basis of our transcriptomic and metabolomic findings, we propose a hypothetical scenario in which eugenol acetate plays a key role in high eugenol accumulation in clove leaves and buds. The clove genome is a new contribution to omics resources for the Myrtaceae family and an important tool for clove research. A newly assembled clove genome is compared with E. grandis to investigate genome evolution between the two genera of the Myrtaceae family, and putative genes involved in the biosynthesis of eugenol are identified through transcriptomics and metabolomics. The summer of 2022 was notable for the Svalbard archipelago due to the occurrence of several longstanding heatwaves, making it one of the warmest summers on the regional record. This study used an energy balance model forced with in situ weather observations to investigate the influence of extreme weather events on the surface energy balance of the low-elevation Aldegondabreen glacier (5.2 km2), located near Barentsburg town, with a focus on the turbulent heat exchange. The annual mass balance for 2022 (−2.13 m w.e.) was one of the most negative on record for Aldegondabreen since 2002/2003 when glaciological monitoring was first initiated. We identified four heatwaves that lasted from 9 to 19 days, the most prominent of which were observed in May and in September–October, which resulted in an anomalously prolonged melt season. In addition, several shorter, 1- to 3-day extreme melt events were identified, representing up to 75 mm w.e. day−1 of glacier-averaged melt. These events were well correlated (r = 0.87, p < 0.01), with discharge from a stream originating from the glacier terminus, and all cases were associated with significant increases in mean daily wind speeds (up to 10.3 m s−1). The strategy of partial Pb2+ substitution is applied, in prototypical MAPbI3 perovskite, with a large array of metal cations in order to comprehensively explore their possible incorporation in the perovskite lattice at Pb2+ sites and thus obtain improved photostability of the absorber. An analysis of lattice parameters and optoelectronic properties of MAPb1‐xMxI∼3 compositions allowed authors to deduce which metal cations are partially incorporated in the perovskite structure and which are expelled in the form of secondary phases. Curious effects of metal incorporation are observed, such as a decrease in the tetragonal distortion ratio and a change in the band gap. This work reveals that the doping of 11 metal cations significantly improves the photostability of the MAPbI3 films. Multiple MAPb1‐xMxI∼3 formulations deliver superior power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) in solar cells. The DFT calculations further demonstrate a complex relationship between the synthetic conditions and doping patterns. Cyclophilin (Cyp) inhibitors are of clinical interest in respect to their antiviral activities in the context of many viral infections including chronic hepatitis B and C. Cyps are a group of enzymes with peptidyl-prolyl isomerase activity (PPIase), known to be required for replication of diverse viruses including hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV and HCV). Amongst the Cyp family, the molecular mechanisms underlying the antiviral effects of CypA have been investigated in detail, but potential roles of other Cyps are less well studied in the context of viral hepatitis. Furthermore, most studies investigating the role of Cyps in viral hepatitis did not investigate the potential therapeutic effects of their inhibition in already-established infections but have rather been performed in the context of neo-infections. Here, we investigated the effects of genetically silencing Cyps on persistent HCV and HBV infections. We confirm antiviral effects of CypA and CypD knock down and demonstrate novel roles for CypG and CypH in HCV replication. We show, furthermore, that CypA silencing has a modest but reproducible impact on persistent HBV infections in cultured human hepatocytes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
