Research Findings: The current study explored the average levels, latent profiles, and predictors of preschoolers' cultural cognition, in a sample of 8774 preschoolers' parents in Shanghai, China. Parents with children aged 3–6 years completed measures of Cultural Cognition Scale for Preschoolers (CCSP) which was newly developed and validated. First, the psychometric properties indicated that CCSP was a reliable and valid scale with four constructs: cultural knowledge, cultural interest, cultural identity, and cultural practice. Second, preschoolers negatively performed in cultural cognition with few high-quality cultural practices and limited fundamental cultural knowledge. Third, the latent profile analysis yielded low-(28.0%), middle-(53.8%), and high-level(18.2%) profiles of parent reports, differentiated by parental education, child age, child gender, preschool rating, and location. Last but not least, a hierarchical regression analysis predicting preschoolers' cultural cognition found that child age, child gender, and parental education had critical effects. In addition, interaction effects were found between parental education and child age on cultural knowledge, as well as between child age and gender on cultural practice. Practice or Policy: This study provides a useful tool to understand and evaluate preschoolers' cultural cognition ability. The findings imply that excellent national cultural enlightenment education with more high-quality cultural activities for preschoolers needs additional focus. Besides, the characteristics of the children with the identified profiles and the family factors related to cultural cognition serve as a reference to better advance children's humanistic literacy. NiFe-LDH/g-C3N4 (LDH/CN) heterostructures with different amounts of NiFe-LDH (LDH) were prepared by a hydrothermal method and characterized using different experimental techniques. Their photocatalytic properties were investigated using the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) and the production of hydrogen from water splitting. Experimental results showed that the hydrogen production rate (780.5 μmol g−1 h−1) was 2.29 times that of pristine CN, and the TC removal rate (76.3%) of 1.8LDH/CN was 3.71 times that of CN. According to the detailed study of the structural, optical, and photoelectrochemical properties, a type II charge transfer mechanism was proposed to explain the improved photocatalytic performance of LDH/CN. Insulin secretion increases progressively during pregnancy to maintain normal maternal blood glucose levels. The placenta plays a crucial role in this process by releasing hormones and extracellular vesicles into the maternal circulation, which drive significant changes in pregnancy physiology. Placental extracellular vesicles, which are detectable in the plasma of pregnant women, have been shown to signal peripheral tissues and contribute to pregnancy-related conditions. While studies using murine models have demonstrated that extracellular vesicles can modulate insulin secretion in pancreatic islets, it remains unclear whether these effects translate to human biology. Understanding how placental signals enhance insulin synthesis and secretion from β cells could be pivotal in developing new therapies for diabetes. In our study, we isolated placental small extracellular vesicles from human placentae and utilised the human β cell line, EndoC-βH3, to investigate their effects on β-cell function in vitro. Our results indicate that human β cells internalise placental small extracellular vesicles, leading to enhanced insulin gene expression and increased insulin content within the β cells. Moreover, these vesicles upregulated the expression of Annexin A1, a protein known to increase insulin content. This upregulation of Annexin A1 holds promise as a potential mechanism by which placental small extracellular vesicles enhance insulin biosynthesis., (Copyright 2024 The Author(s).)

Background: Prior studies exploring the impact of widowhood on cognitive impairment in later life have been focussed on the USA and Europe. We aimed to explore the mediating role of social engagement, health behaviours, and subjective well-being in the association between widowhood and cognitive impairment in the Chinese population., Methods: We conducted a study on 7796 older individuals enrolled in the 2018 wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Study. We used logistic regression models to analyse the impact of widowhood on cognitive health among older adults and performed mediation analysis to determine possible mediating factors in this relationship., Results: Widows and widowers had a higher risk of having cognitive impairment than married older adults (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.312, 2.279). The results from structural equation modelling (SEM) provided a good fit to the observed data (χ 2  = 24.909; P = 0.00) and indicated that the effect of widowhood on cognitive impairment was partially mediated by social engagement, lifestyle behaviours, and subjective well-being (β = 0.075; P < 0.01)., Conclusions: Our findings contribute to existing research on the mechanisms underlying the association between widowhood and cognitive impairment among older individuals, suggesting a need for policies targeted at the specific needs of this vulnerable population, such as the maintenance of social interactions, adoption of a healthy lifestyle, improvement of subjective well-being, and provision of necessary support systems., Competing Interests: Disclosure of interest: The authors completed the ICMJE Disclosure of Interest Form (available upon request from the corresponding author) and disclose no relevant interests., (Copyright © 2024 by the Journal of Global Health.
