Background: Posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation is a common complication of cataract surgery. Dislocated IOLs often require surgical intervention due to the potentially severe risks of leaving this condition untreated. If a patient with extremely low corneal endothelial cell density (ECD) presents with IOL dislocation, the surgeon faces a crucial dilemma of choosing the most optimal surgical treatment option. We sought to investigate the efficacy and safety of retropupillary iris claw intraocular lens (R-IOL) implantation in patients with IOL dislocation and extremely low (< 1000 cells/mm2) ECD. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of nine patients (all men) whose pre-operative ECD was < 1000 cells/mm2 and who underwent R-IOL implantation due to intraocular subluxation or total dislocation into the vitreous cavity between 2014 and 2020. We evaluated corneal endothelial function and visual outcomes after surgery. Results: Nine patients were included in this study. The mean age at diagnosis was 64.89 ± 7.15 years (range 57–76 years), and the follow-up duration was 37.93 ± 23.72 months (range 18.07–89.07 months). No patients developed bullous keratopathy during follow-up. Compared to the initial ECD, corneal thickness (CT), coefficient variation of cell area (CV) and percentage of hexagonal cells (HEX), there was no statistically significant decrease in the ECD, CV, and HEX at last follow-up (P = 0.944, 0.778, 0.445, 0.443). There was significant improvement in the mean uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) at the last follow-up (average 0.13 logMAR, 20/27 Snellen) compared to the pre-operative mean UDVA (average 1.09 logMAR, 20/250 Snellen) (P < 0.01). Conclusions: R-IOL implantation did not result in a statistically significant decline in corneal endothelial function in patients with preoperatively low ECD, and it significantly improved the mean UDVA postoperatively. R-IOL implantation appears to be a safe and effective treatment modality for intraocular lens dislocation in patients with low ECD (< 1000 cells/mm²); however, long-term follow-up studies are warranted to corroborate these findings. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are promising candidates replacing conventional batteries in wearable devices, owing to their self‐powering properties. Although TENGs can convert mechanical energy into electrical energy, excessive mechanical stresses can degrade their performance. Moreover, conformal adhesion to skin is required to improve its performance in wearable devices. Here, a stretchable, adhesive, and self‐healing single‐electrode TENG with a multifunctional hydrogel‐elastomer double layer is developed. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs)‐doped hydrogel is used as the electrode. Subsequently, the electrode is covered with an Ecoflex elastomer that acted as a triboelectrification layer. The soft tissue‐like properties of the hydrogel allow conformal adhesion to nonplanar skin, whereas the dynamic polymer network of the hydrogel endows toughness and ability to self‐heal (within 5 min) against external damage. The TENG demonstrates an output voltage and current peak at 180 V and 0.8 µA. Moreover, it can generate a maximum power peak at 37.8 mW m−2, which is sufficient to power small electronics like stopwatches and light‐emitting diodes, with a power management circuit. The proposed TENG devices can function as telecommunication touch panels via Morse code. Ensuring stable integration of diverse soft electronic components for reliable operation under dynamic conditions is crucial. However, integrating soft electronics, comprising various materials like polymers, metals, and hydrogels, poses challenges due to their different mechanical and chemical properties. This study introduces a dried-hydrogel adhesive made of poly(vinyl alcohol) and tannic acid multilayers (d-HAPT), which integrates soft electronic materials through moisture-derived chain entanglement. d-HAPT is a thin (~1 µm) and highly transparent (over 85% transmittance in the visible light region) adhesive, showing robust bonding (up to 3.6 MPa) within a short time (<1 min). d-HAPT demonstrates practical application in wearable devices, including a hydrogel touch panel and strain sensors. Additionally, the potential of d-HAPT for use in implantable electronics is demonstrated through in vivo neuromodulation and electrocardiographic recording experiments while confirming its biocompatibility both in vitro and in vivo. Sprout ginseng extract (ThinkGIN™) manufactured through a smart farm system has been shown to improve memory in preclinical studies. This study conducted a 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ThinkGIN™ for improving memory in subjective memory impairment (SMI). Subjects aged 55 to 75 years with SMI participated in this study. A total of 80 subjects who met the inclusion/exclusion criteria were assigned to the ThinkGIN™ group (n = 40, 450 mg ThinkGIN™/day) or a placebo group (n = 40). Efficacy and safety evaluations were conducted before intervention and at 12 weeks after intervention. As a result of 12 weeks of ThinkGIN™ intake, significant differences in SVLT, RCFT, MoCA-K, PSQI-K, and AChE were observed between the two groups. Safety evaluation (AEs, laboratory tests, vital signs, and electrocardiogram) revealed that ThinkGIN™ was safe with no clinically significant changes. Long-term hepatic damage is associated with human morbidity and mortality owing to numerous pathogenic factors. A variety of studies have focused on improving liver health using natural products and herbal medicines. We aimed to investigate the effect of enzyme-treated Zizania latifolia ethanol extract (ETZL), which increases the content of tricin via enzymatic hydrolysis, for 8 weeks on liver-related outcomes, lipid metabolism, antioxidant activity, and fatigue compared to a placebo. Healthy Korean adult males aged 19–60 years were randomized into ETZL treatment and placebo groups, and alcohol consumption was 24.96 and 28.64 units/week, respectively. Alanine transaminase, a blood marker associated with liver cell injury, significantly decreased after 8 weeks compared to the baseline in the ETZL treatment group (p = 0.004). After 8 weeks, the treatment group showed significant changes in the levels of high-density lipoprotein and hepatic steatosis index compared to the baseline (p = 0.028 and p = 0.004, respectively). ETZL treatment tended to reduce antioxidant-activity-related factors, total antioxidant status, and malondialdehyde, but there was no significant difference. In the multidimensional fatigue scale, ETZL treatment showed a significant reduction in general fatigue and total-fatigue-related values after 8 weeks compared to the baseline (p = 0.012 and p = 0.032, respectively). Taken together, the 8-week treatment of enzyme-treated Zizania latifolia ethanol extract demonstrated positive effects on liver-related outcomes, lipid metabolism, and mental fatigue without adverse effects on safety-related parameters. This study aims to enhance second language (L2) learners' motivation and facilitate successful L2 learning by using motivational languaging, an intervention that encourages learners to reflect on, and externalize, their L2-speaking, competent future self-concepts by writing or speaking about them. Two types of effective languaging activities were developed: individual and group writing. Participants were 264 Grade 10 high school students, divided into three groups: one control group and two experimental groups. Using activity workbooks, the first experimental group engaged in 'individual writing' guided by a series of questions in their workbooks (e.g. reasons for learning English and their ideal images of using English). The second experimental group carried out 'group writing', including group discussions and writing of group members' opinions. The activities were conducted in the participants' first language, Korean, for 30–40 minutes once a week for six weeks. The results indicated, in the two experimental groups, that the participants' L2 learning motivation was enhanced, including the ideal L2 self. When observing the changes in the influence of motivation on motivated L2 learning behavior and English proficiency, meaningful increases were only found in the individual writing group, with the ideal L2 self showing more powerful impact on the two criterion measures after the activities. Developing thin, highly stretchable coatings that inhibit the undesirable adhesion of biological substances on soft and high‐water‐content biomaterial surfaces is an area of significant interest. In this study, a stretchable antifouling coating named lubricant‐infused poly(1,3,5,7‐tetramethyl‐1,3,5,7‐tetravinyl cyclotetrasiloxane) (V4D4) is introduced interface with perfluoropolymer (L‐VIP). The stretchable adhesive‐perfluoropolymer bilayer comprises stretchable adhesive polymer (V4D4) and perfluoropolymer (1H,1H,2H,2H‐perfluorooctyl methacrylate (FOMA)). The bilayer exhibits a strong affinity with the lubricant, imparting exceptional antifouling and slippery properties. L‐VIP coating displays superior fouling resistance against plasma proteins related to foreign body reactions (FBR) and biofilm‐forming bacteria. The coating exhibits impressive elastic limits exceeding 200% strain and exceptional stability under repeated cyclic stretching (> 2000 cycles at 150% strain) while maintaining its antifouling properties. Furthermore, the coating presents dielectric performance under accelerated aging conditions at a temperature of 70° and constant voltage stress of 10 V s−1 for over 50 days. To assess the biocompatibility of the L‐VIP coating, a series of in vitro and in vivo experiments are conducted, confirming its non‐toxicity for biomedical applications. It is expected that the stretchable L‐VIP coating will enhance medical devices' longevity and help prevent bacterial infections, the formation of biofilms, and the nonspecific adherence of biological substances after implantation. In the process of pyrolyzing waste plastics, the generation of Cl2 gas can pose a problem. During the pyrolysis processing, incomplete combustion of organic compounds containing chlorine can lead to the formation of toxic chemicals, which can cause issues in subsequent processing stages. Therefore, an adsorbent plays an important role in removing Cl2 in the dechlorination process, and alkaline adsorbents and metal oxides are generally used. Waste red mud is composed of Fe metal oxide and alkaline components, so it is intended to be used as a Cl2 adsorbent. The Cl2 removal ability of red mud with different redox status of iron oxides was assessed. Hydrogen treatment was performed at various temperatures to control the reduction potential of the Fe in the metal oxides, and phase changes in the Fe oxide component of red mud were confirmed. In the case of red mud hydrogenated at 700 °C, most of the Fe2O3 structure could be converted to the Fe3O4 structure, and the Fe3O4 structure showed superior results in Cl2 adsorption compared to the Fe2O3 structure. As a result, red mud at an H2 treatment temperature of 700 °C showed about three times higher Cl2 adsorption compared to red mud without H2 treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lipid biosynthesis is recently studied its functions in a range of cellular physiology including differentiation and regeneration. However, it still remains to be elucidated in its precise function. To reveal this, we evaluated the roles of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) signaling in alveolar bone formation using the LPA type 2 receptor (LPAR2) antagonist AMG‐35 (Amgen Compound 35) using tooth loss without periodontal disease model which would be caused by trauma and usually requires a dental implant to restore masticatory function. In this study, in vitro cell culture experiments in osteoblasts and periodontal ligament fibroblasts revealed cell type‐specific responses, with AMG‐35 modulating osteogenic differentiation in osteoblasts in vitro. To confirm the in vivo results, we employed a mouse model of tooth loss without periodontal disease. Five to 10 days after tooth extraction, AMG‐35 facilitated bone formation in the tooth root socket as measured by immunohistochemistry for differentiation markers KI67, Osteocalcin, Periostin, RUNX2, transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF‐β1) and SMAD2/3. The increased expression and the localization of these proteins suggest that AMG‐35 elicits osteoblast differentiation through TGF‐β1 and SMAD2/3 signaling. These results indicate that LPAR2/TGF‐β1/SMAD2/3 represents a new signaling pathway in alveolar bone formation and that local application of AMG‐35 in traumatic tooth loss can be used to facilitate bone regeneration and healing for further clinical treatment. In drug discovery, human organ-on-a-chip (organ chip) technology has emerged as an essential tool for preclinical testing, offering a realistic representation of human physiology, real-time monitoring, and disease modeling. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is commonly used in organ chip fabrication owing to its biocompatibility, flexibility, transparency, and ability to replicate features down to the nanoscale. However, the porous nature of PDMS leads to unintended absorption of small molecules, critically affecting the drug response analysis. Addressing this challenge, the precision drug testing organ chip (PreD chip) is introduced, an innovative platform engineered to minimize small molecule absorption while facilitating cell culture. This chip features a PDMS microchannel wall coated with a perfluoropolyether-based lubricant, providing slipperiness and antifouling properties. It also incorporates an ECM-coated semi-porous membrane that supports robust multicellular cultures. The PreD chip demonstrates its outstanding antifouling properties and resistance to various biological fluids, small molecule drugs, and plasma proteins. In simulating the human gut barrier, the PreD chip demonstrates highly enhanced sensitivity in tests for dexamethasone toxicity and is highly effective in assessing drug transport across the human blood-brain barrier. This study aimed to investigate the anti-allergic activity of compounds isolated from Geranium wilfordii Maxim. and to suggest potential therapeutic agents for allergies. Nine compounds were isolated from an ethanolic G. wilfordii extract using chromatographic methods and identified chemically and by spectroscopic analysis. These compounds were identified using reported literature data as brevifolin carboxylic acid ( 1 ), chlorogenic acid ( 2 ), corilagin ( 3 ), ellagic acid ( 4 ), geraniol ( 5 ), kaempferol 3- O -dirhamnoside ( 6 ), kaempferol 3- O -neohesperidoside ( 7 ), protocatechuic acid ( 8 ), and gallic acid ( 9 ). All nine identified compounds were assessed for including IL-4 mRNA expression and β-hexosaminidase release in RBL-2H3 cells stimulated with PMA/ionomycin or IgE + DNP-BSA. IL-4 gene expression assay showed that corilagin ( 3 ) potently inhibited IL-4 production, and β-hexosaminidase release assay showed that protocatechuic acid ( 8 ) markedly reduced histamine release. The study shows that of the nine compounds isolated from G. wilfordii , corilagin ( 3 ), and protocatechuic acid ( 8 ) are potential treatments for allergy-related diseases.

Background: Hemiarthroplasty is frequently used to treat displaced femoral neck fractures in elderly patients, but it has a higher risk of postoperative dislocation. We introduced the posterior approach and inferior capsulotomy (PAICO) to enhance joint stability after bipolar hemiarthroplasty for femoral neck fracture. We evaluated whether the PAICO would have a lower dislocation rate than the conventional posterior approach with superior capsulotomy., Methods: From January 2021 to December 2021, we prospectively recruited 25 patients (25 hips) aged 50 years or older who underwent bipolar hemiarthroplasty for femoral neck fractures due to low-energy trauma as the PAICO group. We compared the PAICO group with a historical control group who had undergone hemiarthroplasty in 7 institutes between 2010 and 2020. The primary endpoint was dislocation within 1 year after the surgery. We compared data from the PAICO group with the data from the historical control group from the Korean Hip Fracture Registry which was carried out in South Korea., Results: A total of 25 patients (25 hips) were enrolled in the present study; 3,477 patients (3,571 hips) who underwent bipolar hemiarthroplasty were reviewed as the historical control group. In the PAICO group, we observed no dislocation, whereas the dislocation rate in the control group was 1.3%., Conclusions: In patients with displaced femoral neck fractures, the PAICO approach demonstrated comparable results in operation time and complication rates when compared to bipolar hemiarthroplasty using superior capsulotomy. Notably, there were no observed cases of dislocation among patients who underwent the PAICO approach. Introduction: Prohibitin (PHB) is an essential scaffold protein that modulates signaling pathways controlling cell survival, metabolism, inflammation, and bone formation. However, its specific role in periodontium development remains less understood. This study aims to elucidate the expression pattern and function of PHB in periodontium development and its involvement in alveolar bone formation. Methods: Immunolocalization of PHB in the periodontium of postnatal (PN) mice were examined. Phb morpholino was micro-injected into the right-side mandible at PN5, corresponding to the position where the alveolar bone process forms in relation to the lower first molar. The micro-injection with a scramble control (PF-127) and the left-side mandibles were used as control groups. Five days post-micro-injection, immunohistochemical analysis and micro-CT evaluation were conducted to assess bone mass and morphological changes. Additionally, expression patterns of signaling molecules were examined following Phb downregulation using 24-h in vitro cultivation of developing dental mesenchyme at E14.5. Results: The immunostaining of PHB showed its localization in the periodontium at PN5, PN8, and PN10. The in vitro cultivation of dental mesenchyme resulted in alterations in Bmps, Runx2, and Wnt signalings after Phb knock-down. At 5 days post-micro-injection, Phb knocking down showed weak immunolocalizations of runt-related transcription factor (RUNX2) and osteocalcin (OCN). However, knocking down Phb led to histological alterations characterized by decreased bone mass and stronger localizations of Ki67 and PERIOSTIN in the periodontium compared 1 to control groups. The micro-CT evaluation showed decreased bone volume and increased PDL space in the Phb knock-down specimens, suggesting its regulatory role in bone formation. Discussion: The region-specific localization of PHB in the margin where alveolar bone forms suggests its involvement in alveolar bone formation and the differentiation of the periodontal ligament. Periodontitis is known to be affected by high-glucose conditions, which poses a challenge to periodontal tissue regeneration, particularly in bone formation. In this study, the potential effects of resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene, RSV) in facilitating bone formation under high-glucose conditions after periodontitis has been investigated. We focused on the analysis of osteoblasts and periodontal ligament cells, which are essential for bone formation including cell proliferation and differentiation. And we aimed to investigate the impact of RSV on bone healing, employed diabetic mouse model induced by streptozotocin and confirmed through histological observation. High-glucose conditions adversely affected cell proliferation and ALP activity in both MC3T3-E1 and hPDLF in vitro , with more significant impact on MC3T3-E1 cells. RSV under high-glucose conditions had positive effects on both, showing early-stage effects for MC3T3-E1 cells and later-stage effects for hPDLF cells. RSV seemed to have a more pronounced rescuing role in MC3T3-E1 cells. Increased ALP activity was observed and the expression levels of significant genes, such as Col 1, TGF-β1, ALP, and OC, in osteogenic differentiation were exhibited stage-specific expression patterns. Upregulated Col 1 and TGF-β1 were detected in the early stage, and then ALP and OC expressions became more pronounced in the later stages. Similarly, stronger positive reactions against RUNX2 were detected in the RSV-treated group compared to the control. Furthermore, in in vivo experiment, RSV stimulates the growth and differentiation of osteoblasts, thereby promoting bone formation. High-glucose levels have the potential to impair cellular functions and the regenerative capacity to facilitate bone formation with MC3T3-E1 rather than hPDLF cells. Akkermansia muciniphila has received great attention because of its beneficial roles in gut health by regulating gut immunity, promoting intestinal epithelial development, and improving barrier integrity. However, A. muciniphila-derived functional molecules regulating gut health are not well understood. Microbiome-secreted proteins act as key arbitrators of host-microbiome crosstalk through interactions with host cells in the gut and are important for understanding host-microbiome relationships. Herein, we report the biological function of Amuc&#95;1409, a previously uncharacterised A. muciniphila-secreted protein. Amuc&#95;1409 increased intestinal stem cell (ISC) proliferation and regeneration in ex vivo intestinal organoids and in vivo models of radiation- or chemotherapeutic drug-induced intestinal injury and natural aging with male mice. Mechanistically, Amuc&#95;1409 promoted E-cadherin/β-catenin complex dissociation via interaction with E-cadherin, resulting in the activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling. Our results demonstrate that Amuc&#95;1409 plays a crucial role in intestinal homeostasis by regulating ISC activity in an E-cadherin-dependent manner and is a promising biomolecule for improving and maintaining gut health., (© 2024.
